26. Emotions Course: l’esperienza di un intervento educativo per la promozione della competenza socio-emotiva nella scuola dell’infanzia

Abstract

L’esperienza qui presentata s’inserisce nell’ambito degli interventi condotti secondo un approccio evidencebased nella scuola dell’infanzia e riguarda la realizzazione dell’Emotions Course (EC; Di Maggio, Zappulla e Izard, 2014), un percorso educativo finalizzato alla promozione delle abilità socio-emotive in età prescolare. Il programma è stato elaborato facendo riferimento ai fondamenti e agli sviluppi della teoria differenziale delle emozioni, i cui principi sono stati «tradotti» in modo da formare le basi concettuali ed empiriche dell’intervento, articolato nell’ottica della prevenzione primaria e secondaria (Izard, 2002, 2009). In particolare, l’EC è stato applicato al fine di migliorare: – la comprensione delle emozioni primarie (gioia, tristezza, rabbia, paura), intesa in età prescolare come la conoscenza da parte dei bambini sia delle diverse modalità verbali e non verbali di espressione emotiva sia delle cause esterne (gli antecedenti situazionali) e interne (per esempio, i desideri) che possono suscitare le diverse emozioni; – la regolazione emotiva, ossia la capacità dei bambini di esercitare un controllo sull’espressione delle emozioni e sui vissuti emotivi in modo da potere utilizzare costruttivamente la componente motivazionale delle emozioni e mettere in atto risposte cognitive e comportamentali adeguate alle opportunità e alle richieste dell’ambiente; – la competenza sociale dei bambini, la capacità, cioè, di stabilire e mantenere relazioni positive con i pari, di lavorare insieme, di affrontare e risolvere eventuali problemi e conflitti. Hanno preso parte allo studio 143 bambini (73 maschi e 70 femmine) di 3-5 anni (età media = 4.4 anni, ds = .74), inseriti nelle classi di due scuole dell’infanzia di una città del sud d’Italia.

Abstract

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major health problem, with over one million events every year in Europe. However, there is a paucity of data on the current management in real life, including factors influencing treatment pathways, patient satisfaction, quality of life (QoL), and utilization of health care resources and the corresponding costs. The PREFER in VTE registry has been designed to address this and to understand medical care and needs as well as potential gaps for improvement. Methods/design: The PREFER in VTE registry was a prospective, observational, multicenter study conducted in seven European countries including Austria, France Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK to assess the characteristics and the management of patients with VTE, the use of health care resources, and to provide data to estimate the costs for 12 months treatment following a first-time and/or recurrent VTE diagnosed in hospitals or specialized or primary care centers. In addition, existing anticoagulant treatment patterns, patient pathways, clinical outcomes, treatment satisfaction, and health related QoL were documented. The centers were chosen to reflect the care environment in which patients with VTE are managed in each of the participating countries. Patients were eligible to be enrolled into the registry if they were at least 18 years old, had a symptomatic, objectively confirmed first time or recurrent acute VTE defined as either distal or proximal deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or both. After the baseline visit at the time of the acute VTE event, further follow-up documentations occurred at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Follow-up data was collected by either routinely scheduled visits or by telephone calls. Results: Overall, 381 centers participated, which enrolled 3,545 patients during an observational period of 1 year. Conclusion: The PREFER in VTE registry will provide valuable insights into the characteristics of patients with VTE and their acute and mid-term management, as well as into drug utilization and the use of health care resources in acute first-time and/or recurrent VTE across Europe in clinical practice. Lo studio si propone di esaminare le differenze individuali nell’espressione delle emozioni di gioia, rabbia, interesse e paura e nel livello di attività di bambini nel primo anno di vita, utilizzando un approccio multi-metodo basato sull’utilizzo di uno strumento di osservazione diretta, la Lab-TAB (Goldsmith e Rothbart, 1999), e uno strumento di osservazione indiretta, il questionario IBQ-R (Montirosso, Cozzi, Putnam, Gartstein e Borgatti, 2011). I dati delle osservazioni dirette sono stati rilevati attraverso due diversi sistemi di codifica: molecolare e globale. Obiettivo dello studio è anche di verificare se i risultati ottenuti con i due sistemi di codifica delle osservazioni convergano tra loro e con quelli ottenuti dalle valutazioni materne fornite tramite la compilazione del questionario. L’analisi dei cluster effettuata sui dati rilevati tramite la codifica molecolare delle osservazioni ha permesso di identificare cinque profili temperamentali che corrispondono solo in parte a quelli emersi dall’analisi della codifica globale delle osservazioni e dei questionari. I dati mostrano, inoltre, come i punteggi della Lab-TAB ottenuti con i due sistemi di codifica – molecolare e globale – convergano tra loro, ma non correlino significativamente con i punteggi delle stesse dimensioni del temperamento rilevate tramite l’IBQ-R. The study is aimed to examine individual differences in the expression of emotions of joy, anger, interest, fear, and in the level of activity of children in the first year of life, by means of a multi-method approach based on the use of an instrument for direct observation, the Lab-TAB (Goldsmith and Rothbart, 1999), and of an instrument for indirect observation, the questionnaire IBQ-R (Montirosso et al., 2011). Data from direct observations were coded through two different coding systems: molecular and global. The study was also aimed to verify whether the results obtained with the two coding systems converged with each other and with those obtained with the questionnaire. The cluster analysis performed on data collected through the molecular coding allowed to identify five temperamental profiles that match only partially to those that emerged from the global coding of the observations and questionnaires. The data also show that the Lab-TAB scores obtained with the two coding systems – global and molecular – converged with each other, but did not correlate significantly with the scores of the same dimensions of temperament detected by the IBQ-R.

36. The relationship between emotion regulation, emotion knowledge and adjustment in preschoolers: A mediation model

Abstract

The study explored the total, direct and indirect effects of emotion knowledge on adjustment in preschoolers ans examined whether emotion regulation mediated the relationships between emotion knowledge and adjustment (social competence, and behavioral difficulties, such as anxiety–withdrawal and anger–aggression). Two hundred forty children (118 boys and 122 girls) from 3 to 5 years of age (mean age = 4.23, SD = .80) were administered a vocabulary test to check their verbal ability and a measure of emotion knowledge. Teachers filled out two questionnaires about children’s regulation and adjustment variables. A mediation model was tested combined with an assessment of the indirect effects to evaluate whether emotion knowledge may exert an influence on adjustment through the intervention of emotion regulation. Results showed that all conditions for full mediation were met for social competence and anxiety–withdrawal, confirming the mediation role of emotion regulation in the relationship between emotion knowledge and these variables. Moreover, results indicated that emotion knowledge and anger–aggression were not directly associated as they would be in case of full or partial mediation, but they were however indirectly related through a significant linking with emotion regulation. Findings may have potential implications for prevention and intervention programs in family and school contexts, suggesting how early childhood programs targeting emotion knowledge may be especially beneficial to promote social competence and prevent behavioral problems, above all if they include other emotion-related competences, such as emotion regulation, that may be considered the linking mechanism through which emotion knowledge exerts an influence on adjustment.

Abstract

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major health problem, with over one million events every year in Europe. However, there is a paucity of data on the current management in real life, including factors influencing treatment pathways, patient satisfaction, quality of life (QoL), and utilization of health care resources and the corresponding costs. The PREFER in VTE registry has been designed to address this and to understand medical care and needs as well as potential gaps for improvement. Methods/design: The PREFER in VTE registry was a prospective, observational, multicenter study conducted in seven European countries including Austria, France Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK to assess the characteristics and the management of patients with VTE, the use of health care resources, and to provide data to estimate the costs for 12 months treatment following a first-time and/or recurrent VTE diagnosed in hospitals or specialized or primary care centers. In addition, existing anticoagulant treatment patterns, patient pathways, clinical outcomes, treatment satisfaction, and health related QoL were documented. The centers were chosen to reflect the care environment in which patients with VTE are managed in each of the participating countries. Patients were eligible to be enrolled into the registry if they were at least 18 years old, had a symptomatic, objectively confirmed first time or recurrent acute VTE defined as either distal or proximal deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or both. After the baseline visit at the time of the acute VTE event, further follow-up documentations occurred at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Follow-up data was collected by either routinely scheduled visits or by telephone calls. Results: Overall, 381 centers participated, which enrolled 3,545 patients during an observational period of 1 year. Nuove poliammidoammine (PAA) funzionalizzate sono state sviluppate per la protezione sostenibile di legno e carta. Esse sono polimeri ecocompatibili, biocompatibili, dotati di un ampio spettro di azione protettiva e attivi a bassa concentrazione. Le PAA sono veicolabili omogeneamente con mezzi acquosi all'interno dei manufatti lignocellulosici dove esercitano soprattutto le azioni deacidificante e biostatica contro batteri, funghi, muffe e insetti. Nel caso di antichi manoscritti possono fissare l'inchiostro ferro-gallico formando complessi insolubili di ferro.

Abstract

Considering sensation seeking as a personality trait has led to the driving of a series of studies on the biological and temperamental characteristics of sensation seekers. Conversely, from a bio-psychosocial perspective, personality factors are believed to account for about half of the likelihood that an individual will engage in disadaptive and dangerous actions, whereas environmental factors, such as primary relationships, interact with the person’s biology and affect the extent to which genetic factors exert their influence. On the light of these considerations, the present study explored the unique and common contributions of temperament and quality of attachment measured from 15 years old through the propensity of sensation seeking at 17 years old. The research involved 320 participant, from 14 to 16 years of age at wave 1, and 282 (16 to 18 years, 88% of the total sample) at wave 2. Data showed that negative affect at T1 emerged as a significant positive predictor of sensation seeking at T2. Moreover, dismissing attachment at T1 was positively related to thrill seeking at T2. Finally, dismissing attachment at T1 played a mediating role in the relationships between negative affect and lack of control and thrill seeking two years later. Starting from the results of the present study, treatment of adolescent in which sensation seeking may be seen as predictive of problematic behaviors may be based on the reorganization of the personal model of attachment.

Abstract

SummaryVenous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Europe. Data from real-world registries are necessary, as clinical trials do not represent the full spectrum of VTE patients seen in clinical practice. We aimed to document the epidemiology, management and outcomes of VTE using data from a large, observational database. PREFER in VTE was an international, non-interventional disease registry conducted between January 2013 and July 2015 in primary and secondary care across seven European countries. Consecutive patients with acute VTE were documented and followed up over 12 months. PREFER in VTE included 3,455 patients with a mean age of 60.8 ± 17.0 years. Overall, 53.0% were male. The majority of patients were assessed in the hospital setting as inpatients or outpatients (78.5%). The diagnosis was deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in 59.5% and pulmonary embolism (PE) in 40.5%. The most common comorbidities were the various types of cardiovascular disease (excluding hypertension; 45.5%), hypertension (42.3%) and dyslipidaemia (21.1%). Following the index VTE, a large proportion of patients received initial therapy with heparin (73.2%), almost half received a vitamin K antagonist (48.7%) and nearly a quarter received a DOAC (24.5%). Almost a quarter of all presentations were for recurrent VTE, with >80% of previous episodes having occurred more than 12 months prior to baseline. In conclusion, PREFER in VTE has provided contemporary insights into VTE patients and their real-world management, including their baseline characteristics, risk factors, disease history, symptoms and signs, initial therapy and outcomes.

Abstract

Increased expression of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) may ameliorate the clinical course of hemoglobinopathies. Hydroxyurea (HU) is the only inducer approved for the treatment of these diseases able to stimulate HbF production but patients’ response is highly variable indicating the utility of the identification of pharmacogenomic biomarkers in order to predict pharmacological treatment efficacy. To date few studies to evaluate the role of genetic determinants in HU response have been conducted showing contradictory results. In this study we analyzed BCL11A, GATA-1, KLF-1 genes and γ-globin promoter in 60 alleles from 30 hemoglobinopathies patients under HU treatment to assess the role of these markers in HU response. We did not find any association between these genetic determinants and HU response. Before treatment started, the same patients were analyzed in vitro using liquid erythroid cultures in a test able to predict their response to HU. The results of our analysis confirm the absence of pharmacogenomic biomarker associated to HU response indicating that, the quantification of γ-globin mRNA fold increase remains the only method able to predict in vivo patients response to the drug.

45. Geoforensics in Italy: education and research standards

Abstract

Forensic investigations in Italy have no geoforensic protocols or standard protocols to provide the country's law enforcement agencies with the materials to create a multidisciplinary approach to crime scene investigation, using the correct personnel and appropriate tools. Several factors contribute to this situation in Italy, but the main two are: (i) a lack of education, which allows the CSI effect to spread at all levels of society; and (ii) a lack of proper financial and environmental resources to support research. Moreover, the stressful context and psychological pressure of working in such an environment impedes the creation and implementation of proper protocols and standard procedures to the level attained in other more famous forensic sciences.

Abstract

Normally, when geoscientific methods are involved in forensic investigations, they are used to search for and excavate buried bodies.Recently, geoscientific methods have become relevant to not only finding the perpetrators in homicide cases including those in which there are buried bodies, but also in cases involving crimes against the environment, cultural sites and vandalism. Additionally, there are cases in which the discovery of an unexpected burial complicates an investigation.Analytical techniques developed throughout the twentieth century form the basis for recent advances that allow for the forensic geosciences to aid in such investigations. Case examples that demonstrate these advances will be presented.
