1. On the spatial extent of extreme threshold exceedances

Abstract

We introduce the extremal range, a local statistic for studying the spatial extent of extreme events in random fields on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Conditioned on exceedance of a high threshold at a location $s$, the extremal range at $s$ is the random variable defined as the smallest distance from $s\in\mathbb{R}^d$ to a location where there is a nonexceedance. We leverage tools from excursion-set theory, such as Lipschitz- Killing curvatures, to express distributional properties of the extremal range, including asymptotics for small distances and high thresholds. The extremal range captures the rate at which the spatial extent of conditional extreme events scales for increasingly high thresholds, and we relate its distributional properties with the well-known bivariate tail dependence coefficient and the extremal index of time series in Extreme-Value Theory. We calculate theoretical extremal-range properties for commonly used models, such as Gaussian or regularly varying random fields. Abstract

We prove the Central Limit Theorem for the Euler-Poincar\'e characteristic of Berry's random wave model in a growing domain. We also show Gaussian fluctuations for a class of Berry's mixture models that correspond to a perturbation of the initial random field. Finally, some statistical applications, explicit calculations of the variance of the perturbed Berry's model and numerical investigations are provided to support our theoretical results.

3. Identifying regions of concomitant compound precipitation and wind speed extremes over Europe

Abstract

The task of simplifying the complex spatio-temporal variables associated with climate modeling is of utmost importance and comes with significant challenges. In this research, our primary objective is to tailor clustering techniques to handle compound extreme events within gridded climate data across Europe. Specifically, we intend to identify subregions that display asymptotic independence concerning compound precipitation and wind speed extremes. To achieve this, we utilise daily precipitation sums and daily maximum wind speed data derived from the ERA5 reanalysis dataset spanning from 1979 to 2022. Our approach hinges on a tuning parameter and the application of a divergence measure to spotlight disparities in extremal dependence structures without relying on specific parametric assumptions. We propose a data-driven approach to determine the tuning parameter. This enables us to generate clusters that are spatially concentrated, which can provide more insightful information about the regional distribution of compound precipitation and wind speed extremes. In the process, we aim to elucidate the respective roles of extreme precipitation and wind speed in the resulting clusters. Abstract

We introduce the extremal range, a local statistic for studying the spatial extent of extreme events in random fields on $\mathbb{R}^2$. Conditioned on exceedance of a high threshold at a location $s$, the extremal range at $s$ is the random variable defined as the smallest distance from $s$ to a location where there is a non-exceedance. We leverage tools from excursion-set theory to study distributional properties of the extremal range, propose parametric models and predict the median extremal range at extreme threshold levels. The extremal range captures the rate at which the spatial extent of conditional extreme events scales for increasingly high thresholds, and we relate its distributional properties with the bivariate tail dependence coefficient and the extremal index of time series in classical Extreme-Value Theory. Consistent estimation of the distribution function of the extremal range for stationary random fields is proven. For non-stationary random fields, we implement generalized additive median regression to predict extremal-range maps at very high threshold levels. An application to two large daily temperature datasets, namely reanalyses and climate-model simulations for France, highlights decreasing extremal dependence for increasing threshold levels and reveals strong differences in joint tail decay rates between reanalyses and simulations., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures

7. On the perimeter estimation of pixelated excursion sets of 2D anisotropic random fields

Abstract

We are interested in creating statistical methods to provide informative summaries of random fields through the geometry of their excursion sets. To this end, we introduce an estimator for the length of the perimeter of excursion sets of random fields on $\mathbb{R}^2$ observed over regular square tilings. The proposed estimator acts on the empirically accessible binary digital images of the excursion regions and computes the length of a piecewise linear approximation of the excursion boundary. The estimator is shown to be consistent as the pixel size decreases, without the need of any normalization constant, and with neither assumption of Gaussianity nor isotropy imposed on the underlying random field. In this general framework, even when the domain grows to cover $\mathbb{R}^2$, the estimation error is shown to be of smaller order than the side length of the domain. For affine, strongly mixing random fields, this translates to a multivariate Central Limit Theorem for our estimator when multiple levels are considered simultaneously. Finally, we conduct several numerical studies to investigate statistical properties of the proposed estimator in the finite-sample data setting., Comment: 35 pages, 17 figures

8. Estimation of extreme $L^1$-multivariate expectiles with functional covariates

Abstract

The present article is devoted to the semi-parametric estimation of multivariate expectiles for extreme levels. The considered multivariate risk measures also include the possible conditioning with respect to a functional covariate, belonging to an infinite-dimensional space. By using the first order optimality condition, we interpret these expectiles as solutions of a multidimensional nonlinear optimum problem. Then the inference is based on a minimization algorithm of gradient descent type, coupled with consistent kernel estimations of our key statistical quantities such as conditional quantiles, conditional tail index and conditional tail dependence functions. The method is valid for equivalently heavy-tailed marginals and under a multivariate regular variation condition on the underlying unknown random vector with arbitrary dependence structure. Our main result establishes the consistency in probability of the optimum approximated solution vectors with a speed rate. Abstract

We propose a new class of models for variable clustering called Asymptotic Independent block (AI-block) models, which defines population-level clusters based on the independence of the maxima of a multivariate stationary mixing random process among clusters. This class of models is identifiable, meaning that there exists a maximal element with a partial order between partitions, allowing for statistical inference. We also present an algorithm depending on a tuning parameter that recovers the clusters of variables without specifying the number of clusters \emph{a priori}. Our work provides some theoretical insights into the consistency of our algorithm, demonstrating that under certain conditions it can effectively identify clusters in the data with a computational complexity that is polynomial in the dimension. A data-driven selection method for the tuning parameter is also proposed. To further illustrate the significance of our work, we applied our method to neuroscience and environmental real-datasets. 10. Surface area and volume of excursion sets observed on point cloud based polytopic tessellations

Abstract

The excursion set of a $C^2$ smooth random field carries relevant information in its various geometric measures. From a computational viewpoint, one never has access to the continuous observation of the excursion set, but rather to observations at discrete points in space. It has been reported that for specific regular lattices of points in dimensions 2 and 3, the usual estimate of the surface area of the excursions remains biased even when the lattice becomes dense in the domain of observation. In the present work, under the key assumptions of stationarity and isotropy, we demonstrate that this limiting bias is invariant to the locations of the observation points. Indeed, we identify an explicit formula for the bias, showing that it only depends on the spatial dimension $d$. This enables us to define an unbiased estimator for the surface area of excursion sets that are approximated by general tessellations of polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, including Poisson-Voronoi tessellations. Abstract

The modeling of dependence between maxima is an important subject in several applications in risk analysis. To this aim, the extreme value copula function, characterised via the madogram, can be used as a margin-free description of the dependence structure. From a practical point of view, the family of extreme value distributions is very rich and arise naturally as the limiting distribution of properly normalised component-wise maxima. In this paper, we investigate the nonparametric estimation of the madogram where data are completely missing at random. We provide the functional central limit theorem for the considered multivariate madrogram correctly normalized, towards a tight Gaussian process for which the covariance function depends on the probabilities of missing. 12. Turbulent Schmidt Number Measurements Over Three-Dimensional Cubic Arrays

Abstract

We present turbulent Schmidt number Sc_t estimations above three-dimensional urban canopies, where Sc_t is a property of the flow defined as the ratio of the eddy diffusivity of momentum (K_M) to the eddy diffusivity of mass (D_t). Despite the fact that Sc_t modelling is of great interest, inter alia, for pollutant dispersion simulations conducted via computational fluid dynamics, no universal value is known. Simultaneous measurements of fluid velocity and mass concentration are carried out in a water channel for three staggered arrays of cubical obstacles corresponding to isolated flow, wake-interference, and skimming-flow regimes. A passive tracer is released from a continuous point source located at a height z=1.67H, where H is the obstacle height. The results show an increase of Sc_t with height above the canopy for all three arrays, with values at z=2H (Sc_t = 0.6) about double compared to that at z=H. The observed Sc_t agrees well with that modelled by using a simple formulation for Sc_t based on expressions for K_M and D_t published in previous studies. Comparisons with other Sc_t models found in the literature are also presented and discussed.

Abstract

We investigate Lipschitz-Killing curvatures for excursion sets of random fields on $\mathbb R^2$ under small spatial-invariant random perturbations. An expansion formula for mean curvatures is derived when the magnitude of the perturbation vanishes, which recovers the Gaussian Kinematic Formula at the limit by contiguity of the model. We develop an asymptotic study of the perturbed excursion area behaviour that leads to a quantitative non-Gaussian limit theorem, in Wasserstein distance, for fixed small perturbations and growing domain. When letting both the perturbation vanish and the domain grow, a standard Central Limit Theorem follows. Taking advantage of these results, we propose an estimator for the perturbation which turns out to be asymptotically normal and unbiased, allowing to make inference through sparse information on the field.

17. On the estimation of extreme directional multivariate quantiles

Abstract

In multivariate extreme value theory (MEVT), the focus is on analysis outside of the observable sampling zone, which implies that the region of interest is associated to high risk levels. This work provides tools to include directional notions into the MEVT, giving the opportunity to characterize the recently introduced directional multivariate quantiles (DMQ) at high levels. Then, an out-sample estimation method for these quantiles is given. A bootstrap procedure carries out the estimation of the tuning parameter in this multivariate framework and helps with the estimation of the DMQ. Asymptotic normality for the proposed estimator is provided and the methodology is illustrated with simulated data-sets. Finally, a real-life application to a financial case is also performed.

18. Water-channel study of flow and turbulence past a two-dimensional array of obstacles

Abstract

A neutral boundary layer was generated in the laboratory to analyze the mean velocity field and the turbulence field within and above an array of two-dimensional obstacles simulating an urban canopy. Different geometrical configurations were considered in order to investigate the main characteristics of the flow as a function of the aspect ratio (AR) of the canopy. To this end, a summary of the two-dimensional fields of the fundamental turbulence parameters is given for AR ranging from 1 to 2. The results show that the flow field depends strongly on AR only within the canyon, while the outer flow seems to be less sensitive to this parameter. This is not true for the vertical momentum flux, which is one of the parameters most affected by AR, both within and outside the canyon. The experiments also indicate that, when (i.e. the skimming flow regime), the roughness sub-layer extends up to a height equal to 1.25 times the height of the obstacles (H), surmounted by an inertial sub-layer that extends up to 2.7 H. In contrast, for (i.e. the wake-interference regime) the inertial sub-layer is not present. This has significant implications when using similarity laws for deriving wind and turbulence profiles in canopy flows. Furthermore, two estimations of the viscous dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy of the flow are given. The first one is based on the fluctuating strain rate tensor, while the second is related to the mean strain rate tensor. It is shown that the two expressions give similar results, but the former is more complicated, suggesting that the latter might be used in numerical models with a certain degree of reliability. Finally, the data presented can also be used as a dataset for the validation of numerical models.

Abstract

This Brief Report on the sustainability and circularity of global fashion-value chains discusses the content and potential impact of Recommendation No. 46, "Enhancing Traceability and Transparency of Sustainable Value Chains in Garment and Footwear" developed under the auspices and approved by the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) in April 2021. It is a key output from a project undertaken by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and currently being implemented by UN/CEFACT in collaboration with the International Trade Centre (ITC) and financed by the European Union. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the weakness of opaque garmentand footwear-value chains that lack traceability or transparency for brands, suppliers, and consumers. The public health crisis also increased consumer awareness of sustainability and the need for sustainability information. Recommendation No. 46 starts to set global standards for traceability and transparency and this Brief Report highlights its potential benefits on garment- and footwear-value chains that include nudging single consumer behaviors, supporting broader societal inclusiveness, helping manufacturers to implement circularity, and offering governmental bodies new tools for guiding the sustainable transition and verifying its effectiveness. Abstract

Background The best treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes in whom treatment with metformin alone fails to achieve adequate glycaemic control is debated. We aimed to compare the long-term effects of pioglitazone versus sulfonylureas, given in addition to metformin, on cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods TOSCA.IT was a multicentre, randomised, pragmatic clinical trial, in which patients aged 50–75 years with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled with metformin monotherapy (2–3 g per day) were recruited from 57 diabetes clinics in Italy. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1), by permuted blocks randomisation (block size 10), stratified by site and previous cardiovascular events, to add-on pioglitazone (15–45 mg) or a sulfonylurea (5–15 mg glibenclamide, 2–6 mg glimepiride, or 30–120 mg gliclazide, in accordance with local practice). The trial was unblinded, but event adjudicators were unaware of treatment assignment. The primary outcome, assessed with a Cox proportional-hazards model, was a composite of first occurrence of all-cause death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, or urgent coronary revascularisation, assessed in the modified intention-to-treat population (all randomly assigned participants with baseline data available and without any protocol violations in relation to inclusion or exclusion criteria). This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00700856. Findings Between Sept 18, 2008, and Jan 15, 2014, 3028 patients were randomly assigned and included in the analyses. 1535 were assigned to pioglitazone and 1493 to sulfonylureas (glibenclamide 24 [2%], glimepiride 723 [48%], gliclazide 745 [50%]). At baseline, 335 (11%) participants had a previous cardiovascular event. The study was stopped early on the basis of a futility analysis after a median follow-up of 57·3 months. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of heatwaves on sea breeze, urban heat island intensity, and outdoor thermo-hygrometric comfort analysing ground-based remote sensing and in-situ meteorological measurements collected in a Mediterranean coastal metropolitan area (Rome, Italy) during the summer of 2022. The dataset (01 May - 31 August 2022) has been divided into heatwaves and not-heatwaves days to highlight the distinctive features of extreme heat episodes. Furthermore, the year 2022 was compared to 2020, the latter having been characterised by temperatures in line with the last two-decades. The heatwaves do not significantly affect the onset time and the duration of sea breeze, while its cooling effect intensifies during the heatwaves. The urban heat island intensity (UHII) is evaluated by computing the hourly-averaged air temperature difference between two stations, one in the urban centre and the other in rural surroundings. Although the daily-averaged UHII does not show significant differences among the years under investigation and the subsets, marked differences can be identified in the urban heat island daily cycle. In fact, during daytime the highest temperatures are detected in rural inland areas while, at night, the city experiences higher temperatures, especially during the heatwaves. Finally, the Mediterranean outdoor comfort index suggests that a heatwave seems to be a not sufficient condition for human thermo-hygrometric stress, even if stronger discomfort is experienced during heatwaves. • In Rome, summer 2022 was characterised by several long and intense heatwaves. • Heatwaves intensify the cooling effect due to the sea breeze regime. • Heatwaves amplify the urban heat island intensity only during night-time. • Heatwaves do not necessarily involve human thermo-hygrometric stress events. • Impact of heatwaves on urban liveability depends on site-specific forcings. Abstract

Human thermal sensations are not controlled merely by the ambient temperature, but also by other biometeorological variables and personal factors. Therefore, thermo-hygrometric stress events need to be identified and monitored in addition to heat waves. The purpose of the present article is proposing a method for detection and characterization of thermo-hygrometric stress events, based on the rearrangement of heat waves indices and on new quantities. The Mediterranean Outdoor Thermal Comfort Index (MOCI) is used as a reference variable instead of the air temperature. The method is applied to Milan (Italy) for the 2022 summer, which: i) is the hottest in the period 1991–2020 with a temperature anomaly of 3.17 °C and ii) presents higher minimum temperatures (1.5 times higher) than those of the control period. The analysis of daytime values of MOCI demonstrates a cumulative MOCI higher than zero only in 2022. Hence, the lower fraction of data in the cold range determines a significant increase in the cumulative MOCI. The metrics on severe MOCI events in 2022 confirm the key-role of extreme temperatures. 30. Pollutant fluxes in two-dimensional street canyons.

Abstract

The turbulent dispersion of a passive tracer emitted by a line source simulating vehicular traffic in an idealized urban canyon in neutral conditions is studied in the water channel by means of simultaneous measurements of velocity and concentration fields. The experiments are conducted for two geometrical arrangements of two-dimensional obstacles reproducing the skimming flow (AR = 1) and the wake-interference regime (AR = 2), where AR is the canyon aspect ratio. The results show a strict connection between the dynamics of the shear layer developing at the top of the canyon and the vorticity field. For AR = 1, it is found that the shear layer flaps upwards and downwards according to two different frequencies. The greatest of them matches the vortex shedding frequency as measured at the canyon top, while the lower is comparable to H/u ∗ (H is the building height and u ∗ a reference friction velocity). The shear layer flapping modulates in time the pollutant exchange rate between the canyon and the outer layer. The different characteristics of the shear layer found for the two flow regimes also explain the larger pollutant re-entrainment observed for AR = 1, which turns out to be greater than the emission rate at the source. Sweep and ejection modes are identified via quadrant analysis and used to quantify the weights of the factors involved in the turbulent exchanges of tracer and momentum between the canyon and the outer layer. It is found that the venting of polluted fluid at the canyon top increases substantially passing from AR = 1 to 2, while an opposite trend is observed for the entrainment of polluted fluid. The vertical flux of pollutant at the canyon top for AR = 2 is largely of turbulent nature, with the contribution of the mean flux being practically negligible. On the other hand, the latter becomes comparable or even exceeds the magnitude of the turbulent flux when AR = 1. Abstract

Velocity and concentration fields have been measured simultaneously in the water channel to quantify the turbulent dispersion of a passive tracer emitted at street level by a line source within an idealised urban canyon. The experiment has been conducted for an arrangement of two-dimensional obstacles with aspect ratio unity. Statistical moments of velocity and concentration have been calculated with high spatial resolution. Furthermore, the simultaneous measure of velocity and concentration at the same point made it possible to determine the tracer flux in the whole domain as well as to quantify the removal and re-entrainment of the pollutant through the canyon top. The best treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes in whom treatment with metformin alone fails to achieve adequate glycaemic control is debated. Abstract

This paper presents a water-channel simulation of flow and turbulence in the urban boundary layer. The goal is to assess the role played by the aspect ratio (AR) of the street canyon, assumed as an archetype for more complex and realistic urban fabrics. The physical model consists of a series of two-dimensional obstacles used to mimic a regular array of buildings. Velocity measurements are performed using image analysis. Results show a dependence of the mean velocity and turbulence parameters on AR. Attention is particularly focused on the turbulent kinetic energy and its production-advection-dissipation mechanisms that occur in the urban canopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A widE-Ranging investigation of the first COVID-19 LOCkdown effects on the atmospheric composition in five Italian Urban Sites (AER–LOCUS) has been carried out and is presented in this study. The analysis uses particle and gas concentrations from surface in situ sampling, column aerosol and gas properties from photometer/spectrometers, and satellite NO 2 determinations at five sites distributed over the whole Italian territory: Aosta, Milan, Bologna, Rome, and Taranto. These data are related to meteorological conditions to identify the numerous events of long-range transport and separate local from remote influences. Four different types of long-range transport over Italy are identified during the lockdown period, affecting PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and NO 2 concentrations, and aerosol optical depths: fires plumes from Eastern Europe and Montenegro, dust from the Caspian area and from the Sahara, and pollution from the Po Valley. Once the long-range transport events are identified and excluded, the variation of gas and particle concentrations occurring during the containment period is calculated with respect to the period 2015–2019. A general decrease of PM 10 (ranging from a maximum of −52% in Aosta to a minimum of −4% in Taranto), PM 2.5 (from −46% in Aosta and Milan to −0.6% in Bologna), BC (from −77% in Aosta to −25% in Milan), NO 2 (from −72% in Rome to −4% in Taranto), and benzene (about −50%) concentration is found. A positive variation of PM 2.5 is conversely found during March in the southern sites due to some stagnation events, and a strong increase of benzene (up to +104%) in the industrial area of Taranto. Ozone is found to increase by an average of about 30% in all sites. The removal of the long-range transport contributions affects the variations with respect to the reference period reducing the concentrations by up to 22% for PM 10 and 29% for PM 2.5 in the northern sites, and 18% for PM 10 and 16% for PM 2.5 in the southern sites. For NO 2 the reduction due to the removal is up to 14% in Milan and 6% in the southern sites, while for the aerosol optical depth it is up to 70% in Aosta and 50% in Rome. Abstract

Several ground-based remote sensing and in-situ instruments were used to investigate the development of the sea-breeze front and its effect on both the optical and physical aerosol properties, the Particulate Matter (PM) content and the tropospheric and near-surface NO 2 concentrations. Most of the instruments belongs to the Boundary-layer Air Quality-analysis Using Network of Instruments (BAQUNIN) supersite, in the urban area of Rome (Italy). Two characteristic sea-breeze patterns were identified: the front days, in which the sea-breeze front develops in a few minutes, and the gentle breeze days, in which the onset of the front is gradual (more than 20 min). In the case of front days, Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) increases during the onset of the breeze. The Ångström Exponent (AE), tropospheric and near surface NO 2 amounts are almost constant during the day, while the aerosols volume size distribution follows a trimodal distribution. PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations decrease before the development of the sea-breeze front and then increase. Conversely, during gentle breeze days, AOD and AE do not change significantly. The tropospheric and near surface amount of NO 2 , PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations decrease, suggesting a significant dispersion of pollutants, while the aerosol size distribution shows a trimodal predominance. • Summer days of sea-breeze in Rome (Italy) were analysed using remote sensing devices. • The two sea-breeze front patterns identified, differently impact on urban air quality. • Front days change aerosol and gas content in the city more than gentle breeze days. • No effects on aerosol and gas are found after protracted synoptic wind conditions. • Vertical profiles of aerosol and gas may be needed to improve results.
