Archival {\it XMM-Newton}, {\it Chandra} and {\it Hubble Space Telescope (HST)} data have been used to study the X-ray and optical properties of two candidate ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in NGC\,4536. In order to search for potential optical counterparts, relative astrometry between {\it Chandra} and {\it HST} was improved, and as a result, optical counterparts were detected for both X-ray sources. To complement our findings (based on the archival data), ground-based optical spectra of the counterparts were obtained with the 6m BTA Telescope located at the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO). The calculated redshift (z = 0.4391$\pm$0.0010) for one of the sources (X-3) indicates that the source is, in fact, a background active galactic nucleus (AGN). Two possible optical counterparts (s1 and s2) were found for X-2. Whether s1 is point-like or an extended source is unclear: If it is point-like and the emission is dominated by the donor its spectral type indicates O-B star. In this work, we deploy archival data from {\it HST}, {\it Chandra}, {\it XMM-Newton}, and {\it Swift-XRT}, to probe the nature of 9 candidate ULXs in NGC 1672. We report the results of new transit observations for the three hot Jupiter-like planets HATP-36b, HATP-56b and WASP-52b respectively. Transit timing variations (TTVs) are presented for these systems based on observations that span the period 2016 - 2020. The data were collected with the 0.6 m telescope at Adiyaman University (ADYU60, Turkey) and the 1.0 m telescope at T\"UB\.ITAK National Observatory (TUG, Turkey). Global fits were performed to the combined light curves for each system along with the corresponding radial velocity (RV) data taken from the literature. The extracted parameters (for all three systems) are found to be consistent with the values from previous studies. Through fits to the combined mid-transit times data from our observations and the data available in the literature, an updated linear ephemeris is obtained for each system. Although a number of potential outliers are noted in the respective O-C diagrams, the majority of the data are consistent within the 3$\sigma$ confidence level implying a lack of convincing evidence for the existence of additional objects in the systems studied., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The results of a temporal analysis of observations for a sample of nine low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are presented. Of these sources, five host a neutron star (NS) primary (4U1608-52, Aql X-1, 4U1705-44, GX17+2 and Cyg X-2), and four host a black hole (BH) (GX339-4, XTE J1859+226, H1743-322 and MAXI J1659-152). The NS group includes three Atolls and two Z-type sources. We utilized archival Proportional Counter Array (PCA)/RXTE data to construct high-resolution lightcurves. A wavelet transform of the lightcurves is deployed to extract a minimal time scale (MTS) associated with the spectral state of the sources. The MTS, together with the fractional root-mean-square (RMS) and hardness ratios, is used to construct RMS-MTS and hardness-MTS diagrams that enable a direct comparison of the evolution of spectral transitions in the target sources. Observations with high fractional RMS and high hardness cluster in a broad region occupied jointly by BH and NS sources. For low fractional RMS observations the Atolls exhibit large MTS whereas Z-type sources exhibit small MTS. This new feature raises the possibility of discriminating between these two types of sources. Moreover, in the hardness-MTS plane, BH sources are the sole occupiers of the low-hardness and small-MTS domain thus potentially signaling a unique property for distinguishing BH and NS hosts in LMXBs., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of a temporal and spectral analysis of the transient source ULX-4 in the galaxy M51. The data used were drawn from Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift-XRT archives, spanning the years 2000-2019. The X-ray flux of the source is seen to vary by two orders of magnitudes within a month but a short-term variability was not observed over the time intervals of 100-2000 second in the 0.3-10 keV energy band. We find some evidence for the existence of bi-modality feature in the flux distribution of ULX-4. We identified two optical sources as possible counterparts within an error radius of 0."18 at 95% confidence level for ULX-4 based on the archival HST/ACS and HST/WFC3 data. Blackbody fits of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) indicate the spectral type to be B-type stars. One of these counterparts exhibits a low-amplitude optical periodicity of 264 days in the F606W filter; if we assume this apparent periodicity is associated with the orbital motion of the donor, then it is more likely that the donor is a red supergiant satisfying the long periodicity and accretion via Roche-lobe overflow. Consequently, the SED would then have to be interpreted as a superposition of emissions from a cold donor and a hot flow component, most likely from an accretion disk. If, on the other hand, the periodicity is super orbital in nature i.e., due to possible interactions of the compact object with a circumstellar disk, the donor could then be a Be/X star hosting a neutron star., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables

Similar to black-hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) transients, hysteresis-like state transitions are also seen in some neutron-star X-ray binaries (NSXRBs). Using a method based on wavelets and lightcurves constructed from archival RXTE observations, we extract a minimal timescale over the complete range of transitions for 4U 1608-52 during the 2002 and 2007 outbursts and the 1999 and 2000 outbursts for Aql X-1. Black hole transients are known to undergo spectral transitions that form q-shaped tracks on a hardness intensity diagram. In this work, we use archival RXTE data to extract a characteristic minimal timescale for the spectral states in GX 339-4 for the 2002-3, and 2010 outbursts. We use the extracted timescale to construct an intensity variability diagram for each outburst. This new diagram is comparable to the traditional hardness intensity diagram and offers the potential for probing the underlying dynamics associated with the evolution of the relevant emission regions in black hole transients. We confirm this possibility by connecting the minimal timescale with the inner disk radius, $R_{in}$ (estimated from spectral fits), and demonstrate a positive correlation between these variables as the system evolves through its spectral transitions. Furthermore, we probe the relation between the minimal timescale and the break frequencies extracted from the power spectral densities. Lastly, we examine a possible link between the extracted timescale and a traditional measure of variability i.e., the root mean square, determined directly from the power spectra., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

By comparing the ratio of flux densities in the X-ray and UV wavebands by way of the spectral optical-X-Ray index, $\alpha_{ox}$, we explore the relation between the emissions in the respective wavebands for a number of ULXs with known optical counterparts. We present a significant (anti)correlation between $\alpha_{ox}$ and the L(2500 A)-UV luminosity. In comparison with low-z AGN, for which a similar correlation is observed, the ULX $\alpha_{ox}$ indices follow a steeper slope albeit with a large uncertainty. The results are also compared with a small sample of dwarf-galaxy data consisting of a mixture of broad-line candidate AGN and 'composites'. A number of these sources follow the steeper slope of the ULX data, potentially hinting at an intrinsic similarity of these sources to ULXs. The emission-line dwarf galaxy NGC 3413 is known to host a bright X-ray source near its optical center. The 0.3-10 keV luminosity of this source is estimated to be approximately 10$^{39}$ erg$s^{-1}$ potentially qualifying it as an ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) source. A recent XMM-Newton observation suggests that the source is not point-like, and instead, is more likely a composite of point-like sources with extended and/or diffuse emission. The spectral and temporal features of the bright region are similar to those associated with the so-called broadened disk state of ULXs. Based on a multi-color blackbody spectral fit, we estimate the mass of the bright source to be in the range 3 - 20M$_{\odot}$. A recent study of a small sample of X-ray binaries (XRBs) suggests a significant softening of spectra of neutron star (NS) binaries as compared to black hole (BH) binaries in the luminosity range 10$^{34}$ - 10$^{37}$ erg/s. This softening is quantified as an anticorrelation between the spectral index and the 0.5 - 10 keV X-ray luminosity. We extend the study to significantly lower luminosities (i.e., $\sim$ a few $\times$ $10^{30}$ erg/s) for a larger sample of XRBs. We find evidence for a significant anticorrelation between the spectral index and the luminosity for a group of NS binaries in the luminosity range 10$^{32}$ to 10$^{33}$ erg/s. Our analysis suggests a steep slope for the correlation i.e., -2.12 $\pm$ 0.63. In contrast, BH binaries do not exhibit the same behavior. We examine the possible dichotomy between NS and BH binaries in terms of a Comptonization model that assumes a feedback mechanism between an optically thin hot corona and an optically thick cool source of soft photons. We gauge the NS-BH dichotomy by comparing the extracted corona temperatures, Compton-y parameters and the Comptonization amplification factors: The mean temperature of the NS group is found to be significantly lower than the equivalent temperature for the BH group. The magnetic field in intergalactic space gives important information about magnetogenesis in the early universe. The properties of this field can be probed by searching for radiation of secondary e$^+ $e$^-$ pairs created by TeV photons, that produce GeV range radiation by Compton-scattering cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. The arrival times of the GeV "echo" photons depend strongly on the magnetic field strength and coherence length. A Monte Carlo code that accurately treats pair creation is developed to simulate the spectrum and time-dependence of the echo radiation. The extrapolation of the spectrum of powerful gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) like GRB 130427A to TeV energies is used to demonstrate how the IGMF can be constrained if it falls in the $10^{-21}$ - $10^{-17}$ G range for 1 Mpc coherence length., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We present the spectral analysis of an 87~ks \emph{XMM-Newton} observation of Draco, a nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Of the approximately 35 robust X-ray source detections, we focus our attention on the brightest of these sources, for which we report X-ray and multiwavelength parameters. While most of the sources exhibit properties consistent with AGN, few of them possess characteristics of LMXBs and CVs. Our analysis puts constraints on population of X-ray sources with $L_X>3\times10^{33}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ in Draco suggesting that there are no actively accreting BH and NS binaries. However, we find 4 sources that could be LMXBs/CVs in quiescent state associated with Draco. We also place constraints on the central black hole luminosity and on a dark matter decay signal around 3.5~keV., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

For a sample of Swift and Fermi GRBs, we show that the minimum variability timescale and the spectral lag of the prompt emission is related to the bulk Lorentz factor in a complex manner: For small $\Gamma$'s, the variability timescale exhibits a shallow (plateau) region. For large $\Gamma$'s, the variability timescale declines steeply as a function of $\Gamma$ ($\delta T\propto\Gamma^{-4.05\pm0.64}$). We use a wavelet technique to investigate the time variations in the light curves from a sample of GRBs detected by Fermi and Swift. We focus primarily on the behavior of the flaring region of Swift-XRT light curves in order to explore connections between variability time scales and pulse parameters (such as rise and decay times, widths, strengths, and separation distributions) and spectral lags. Curvature effects in Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have long been a source of considerable interest. In a collimated relativistic GRB jet, photons that are off-axis relative to the observer arrive at later times than on-axis photons and are also expected to be spectrally softer. In this work, we invoke a relatively simple kinematic two-shell collision model for a uniform jet profile and compare its predictions to GRB prompt-emission data for observations that have been attributed to curvature effects such as the peak-flux--peak-frequency relation, i.e., the relation between the $\nu$F$_\nu$ flux and the spectral peak, E$_{pk}$ in the decay phase of a GRB pulse, and spectral lags. In addition, we explore the behavior of pulse widths with energy. From a sample of GRBs detected by the $Fermi$ and $Swift$ missions, we have extracted the minimum variability time scales for temporal structures in the light curves associated with the prompt emission and X-ray flares. A comparison of this variability time scale with pulse parameters such as rise times,determined via pulse-fitting procedures, and spectral lags, extracted via the cross-correlation function (CCF), indicate a tight correlation between these temporal features for both the X-ray flares and the prompt emission. We present a direct link between the minimum variability time scales extracted through a wavelet decomposition and the rise times of the shortest pulses extracted via fits of 34 Fermi GBM GRB light curves comprised of 379 pulses. Pulses used in this study were fitted with log-normal functions whereas the wavelet technique used employs a multiresolution analysis that does not rely on identifying distinct pulses. We have investigated the time variations in the light curves from a sample of long and short Fermi/GBM Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) using an impartial wavelet analysis. The results indicate that in the source frame, the variability time scales for long bursts differ from that for short bursts, that variabilities on the order of a few milliseconds are not uncommon, and that an intriguing relationship exists between the minimum variability time and the burst duration., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS on February 7, 2013

We investigate the feasibility of implementing a system called 'Follow the BAT' that will coordinate ground-based robotic optical and near infrared (NIR) telescopes to monitor the Swift BAT field-of-view (FoV). The system will optimize the monitoring locations in the BAT FoV based on individual robotic telescopes' location, FoV, sensitivity and local weather conditions. The aim is to perform coordinated BAT FoV monitoring by professional as well as amateur astronomers around the world. The scientific goal of the proposed system is to facilitate detection of prompt optical and NIR emission from GRBs, especially from short duration GRBs. Spectral lag, which is defined as the difference in time of arrival of high and low energy photons, is a common feature in Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). Previous investigations have shown a correlation between this lag and the isotropic peak luminosity for long duration bursts. However, most of the previous investigations used lags extracted in the observer-frame only. In this work (based on a sample of 43 Swift long GRBs with known redshifts), we present an analysis of the lag-luminosity relation in the GRB source-frame. Our analysis indicates a higher degree of correlation -0.82 +/- 0.05 (chance probability of ~ 5.5 x 10^-5) between the spectral lag and the isotropic peak luminosity, Liso, with a best-fit power-law index of -1.2 +/- 0.2, such that Liso proportional to lag^-1.2. We have studied power density spectra (PDS) of 206 long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). We fitted the PDS with a simple power-law and extracted the exponent of the power-law (alpha) and the noise-crossing threshold frequency (f_th). We find that the distribution of the extracted alpha peaks around -1.4 and that of f_th around 1 Hz. In addition, based on a sub-set of 58 bursts with known redshifts, we show that the redshift-corrected threshold frequency is positively correlated with the isotropic peak luminosity. Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), which may have been created in the early Universe, are predicted to be detectable by their Hawking radiation. The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope observatory offers increased sensitivity to the gamma-ray bursts produced by PBHs with an initial mass of $\sim 5\times 10^{14}$ g expiring today. PBHs are candidate progenitors of unidentified Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) that lack X-ray afterglow. We have investigated the empirical lag-luminosity relation in the Gamma-ray Burst (GRB) source-frame. We selected two energy bands (100-200 keV and 300-400 keV) in the GRB source-frame, which after redshift correction, lie in the observer-frame energy range of the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). Spectral lag, the time difference between the arrival of high-energy and low-energy photons, is a common feature in Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). Norris et al. 2000 reported a correlation between the spectral lag and the isotropic peak luminosity of GRBs based on a limited sample. More recently, a number of authors have provided further support for this correlation using arbitrary energy bands of various instruments. In this paper we report on a systematic extraction of spectral lags based on the largest Swift sample to date of 31 GRBs with measured redshifts. We extracted the spectral lags for all combinations of the standard Swift hard x-ray energy bands: 15-25 keV, 25-50 keV, 50-100 keV and 100-200 keV and plotted the time dilation corrected lag as a function of isotropic peak luminosity. The mean value of the correlation coefficient for various channel combinations is -0.68 with a chance probability of ~ 0.7 x 10^{-3}. In addition, the mean value of the power-law index is 1.4 +/- 0.3. We present the results of our study of the variability time scales of a sample of 27 long Swift Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with known redshifts. The variability time scale can help our understanding of fundamental GRB parameters such as the initial bulk Lorentz factor and the characteristic size associated with the emission region. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) techniques were used to extract a noise threshold crossing frequency, which we associate with a variability time scale. Being able to quickly select among gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) seen by the Swift satellite those which are high-z candidates would give ground-based observers a better chance to determine a redshift for such distant GRBs. Information about these high-z GRBs is important in helping to resolve questions about the early universe such as the formation rate of high-z GRBs, the re-ionization period of the universe, the metallicity of the early universe, and the Hubble expansion. Initially using a sample of 51 GRBs with previously measured redshifts, we have developed high-z screening criteria employing the GRB spectral as well as temporal characteristics of the prompt emission from the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on Swift. Now that the sample has increased to 81 GRBs, we have revisited the screening criteria and our methodology. Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), which may have been created in the early Universe, are predicted to be detectable by their Hawking radiation. We report on Suzaku observations of four unidentified sources from the INTEGRAL and Swift BAT Galactic plane surveys. All the sources have a large neutral hydrogen column density and are likely members of an emerging class of heavily absorbed high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) first identified in INTEGRAL observations. Two of the sources in our sample are approximately constant flux sources, one source shows periodic variation and one source exhibited a short, bright X-ray outburst. The periodicity is transient, suggesting it is produced by a neutron star in an elliptical orbit around a stellar wind source. We analyze the flaring source in several segments to look for spectral variation and discuss the implications of the findings for the nature of the source. We conclude that all four sources in our sample can be identified with the emerging class of highly absorbed HMXBs, that one is a newly identified transient X-ray pulsar and that at least one is a newly identified supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT)., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJ

Detecting high-z GRBs is important for constraining the GRB formation rate, and tracing the history of re-ionization and metallicity of the universe. Based on the current sample of GRBs detected by Swift with known redshifts, we investigated the relationship between red-shift, and spectral and temporal characteristics, using the BAT event-by-event data. We found red-shift trends for the peak-flux-normalized temporal width T90, the light curve variance, the peak flux, and the photon index in simple power-law fit to the BAT event data. We have constructed criteria for screening GRBs with high red-shifts. We have measured the elastic-scattering ratios of normalized yields for charged pions from 3H and 3He in the backward hemisphere. At 180 MeV, we completed the angular distribution begun with our earlier measurements, adding six data points in the angular range of 119 deg to 169 deg in the pi-nucleus center of mass. We also measured an excitation function with data points at 142, 180, 220, and 256 MeV incident pion energy at the largest achievable angle for each energy between 160 deg and 170 deg in the pi-nucleus center of mass. This excitation function corresponds to the energies of our forward-hemisphere studies. The data, taken as a whole, show an apparent role reversal of the two charge-symmetric ratios r1 and r2 in the backward hemisphere. Also, for data > 100 deg we observe a strong dependence on the four-momentum transfer squared (-t) for all of the ratios regardless of pion energy or scattering angle, and we find that the superratio R data match very well with calculations based on the forward-hemisphere data that predicts the value of the difference between the even-nucleon radii of 3H and 3He. We discuss the experimental and theoretical status of charge-symmetry violation (CSV) in the elastic scattering of pi+ and pi- on 3H and 3He. Analysis of the experimental data for the ratios r1, r2, and R at Tpi = 142, 180, 220, and 256 MeV provides evidence for the presence of CSV. We describe pion scattering from the three-nucleon system in terms of single- and double-scattering amplitudes. External and internal Coulomb interactions as well as the Delta-mass splitting are taken into account as sources of CSV. Reasonable agreement between our theoretical calculations and the experimental data is obtained for Tpi = 180, 220, and 256 MeV. For these energies, it is found that the Delta-mass splitting and the internal Coulomb interaction are the most important contributions for CSV in the three-nucleon system. The CSV effects are rather sensitive to the choice of pion-nuclear scattering mechanisms, but at the same time, our theoretical predictions are much less sensitive to the choice of the nuclear wave function. It is found, however, that data for r2 and R at Tpi = 142 MeV do not agree with the predictions of our model, which may indicate that there are additional mechanisms for CSV which are important only at lower energies., Comment: 26 pages of RevTeX, 16 postscript figures

We discuss the theoretical and experimental situations for charge symmetry violation (CSV) effects in the elastic scattering of pi+ and pi- on deuterium (D) and 3He/3H. Accurate comparison of data for both types of targets provides evidence for the presence of CSV effects. While there are indications of a CSV effect in deuterium, it is much more pronounced in the case of 3He/3H. We provide a description of the CSV effect on the deuteron in terms of single- and double- scattering amplitudes. The Delta-mass splitting is taken into account. Spectral lag, which is defined as the difference in time of arrival of high and low energy photons, is a common feature in Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). Previous investigations have shown a correlation between this lag and the isotropic peak luminosity for long duration bursts. However, most of the previous investigations used lags extracted in the observer-frame only. In this work (based on a sample of 43 Swift long GRBs with known redshifts), we present an analysis of the lag-luminosity relation in the GRB source-frame. Our analysis indicates a higher degree of correlation -0.82+/-0.05 (chance probability of approx 5.5 X 10(exp -5) between the spectral lag and the isotropic peak luminosity, L(sub iso), with a best-fit power-law index of -1.2 +/- 0.2, such that L(sub iso) varies as lag(exp -1.2). In addition, there is an anti-correlation between the source-frame spectral lag and the source-frame peak energy of the burst spectrum, E(sub pk)(1 + z).
