The shape of the Fermi surface, and the cyclotron effective mass of the kagome magnet GdV6Sn6 charge carriers are investigated using de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations measurements and electronic band structure calculations. The temperature and angle-dependent torque magnetometry measurements revealed at least nine different frequencies ranging from ~10 T up to ~9000 T. These frequencies correspond to extremal areas of the Fermi surface ranging from ~0.2 % up to 50% of the first Brillouin zone, qualitatively consistent with the electronic band structure calculations. The angle dependent dHvA oscillation frequencies indicate that the smaller pockets of the Fermi surface have almost 3D character whereas the bigger pockets of the Fermi surface are mostly two-dimensional. We also find evidence of the presence of light (0.28(1) m0) as well as heavy (2.37(18) m0) charge carriers through the analysis of the temperature dependence of dominant frequencies. The comparison of the observed frequencies with the electronic band structure calculations indicates that the heavy masses correspond to saddle-point-like features of electronic band structure at the M point. The observation of the multiple low frequencies and the calculated contributions from various bands to such low frequencies prevent the estimation of topological nature of bands containing lighter fermions. In conclusion, our work reveals the features of a Fermi surface containing enhanced mass fermions originated from saddle points in the electronic band structure at the M point, which is inherent to kagome lattices., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

The magnetic structure, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect of non-centrosymmetric magnetic semimetal NdAlGe are investigated revealing an unusual magnetic state and anomalous transport properties that are associated with the electronic structure of this non-centrosymmetric compound. The magnetization and magnetoresistance measurements are both highly anisotropic and indicate an Ising-like magnetic system. The magnetic structure is complex in that it involves three magnetic ordering vectors including an incommensurate spin density wave and commensurate ferrimagnetic state in zero field. We have discovered a large anomalous Hall conductivity that reaches = 430 {\Omega}-1cm-1 implying that it originates from an intrinsic Berry curvature effect stemming from Weyl nodes found in the electronic structure. These electronic structure calculations indicate the presence of nested Fermi surface pockets with nesting wave vectors similar to the measured magnetic ordering wavevector and the presence of Weyl nodes in proximity to the Fermi surface. We associate the incommensurate magnetic structure with the large anomalous Hall response to be the result of the combination of Fermi surface nesting and the Berry curvature associated with Weyl nodes., Comment: 46 pages, 12 figures

The entropic signatures of magnetic phase transitions in the skyrmion lattice host compounds MnSi0.962Al0.038 and Fe0.7Co0.3Si were investigated through low field magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. These data indicate that the conical to skyrmion transition that occurs with the application of magnetic field in MnSi0.962Al0.038 is characterized by clear discontinuity in the magnetic entropy as expected for first order topological phase transition. These same magnetoentropic features are negligibly small in isostructural Fe0.7Co0.3Si due to the level of chemical substitution related disorder and differences in the spin dynamics (range and timescales). An investigation of the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and charge transport properties of non-centrosymmetric hexagonal ScFeGe reveals it to be an anisotropic metal with a transition to a weak itinerant incommensurate helimagnetic state below $T_N = 36$ K. Neutron diffraction measurements discovered a temperature and field independent helical wavevector \textbf{\textit{k}} = (0 0 0.193) with magnetic moments of 0.53 $\mu_{B}$ per formula unit confined to the {\it ab}-plane. Density functional theory calculations are consistent with these measurements and find several bands that cross the Fermi level along the {\it c}-axis with a nearly degenerate set of flat bands just above the Fermi energy. The anisotropy found in the electrical transport is reflected in the calculated Fermi surface, which consists of several warped flat sheets along the $c$-axis with two regions of significant nesting, one of which has a wavevector that closely matches that found in the neutron diffraction. The electronic structure calculations, along with a strong anomaly in the {\it c}-axis conductivity at $T_N$, signal a Fermi surface driven magnetic transition, similar to that found in spin density wave materials. Magnetic fields applied in the {\it ab}-plane result in a metamagnetic transition with a threshold field of $\approx$ 6.7 T along with a sharp, strongly temperature dependent, discontinuity and a change in sign of the magnetoresistance for in-plane currents. Thus, ScFeGe is an ideal system to investigate the effect of in-plane magnetic fields on an easy-plane magnetic system, where the relative strength of the magnetic interactions and anisotropies determine the topology and magnetic structure., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Polar magnetic oxide HoCrWO$_6$ is synthesized and its crystal structure, magnetic structure, and thermodynamic properties are investigated. HoCrWO$_6$ forms the polar crystal structure (space group Pna2$_1$ (#33)) due to the cation ordering of W$^{6+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$. There is an antiferromagnetic transition at TN = 24.5 K along with the magnetic entropy change (~5 J.Kg.$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ at 70 kOe). Neutron diffraction measurement indicates that both Cr and Ho sublattices are ordered with the moment of 2.32(5)$\mu_B$ and 8.7(4)$\mu_B$ at 2 K, respectively. While Cr forms A-type collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with magnetic moment along the $b$ axis, Ho sublattice orders in a non-coplanar AFM arrangement. A comparison with isostructural DyFeWO$_6$ and DyCrWO$_6$ indicates that the magnetic structure of this family of compounds is controlled by the presence or absence of eg electrons in the transition metal sublattice., Comment: 7 figures, 22 pages. The evolution of the magnetic and charge transport properties of itinerant magnetic metal MnSi with the substitution of Al and Ga on the Si site is investigated. We observe an increase in unit cell volume indicating that both Al and Ga substitutions create negative chemical pressure. There are substantial increases in the Curie temperature and the ordered moment demonstrating that the substitutions give the magnetism a more local character. The substitutions also increase the range of temperature and field where the skyrmion phase is stable due to a change in the character of the magnetism. In contrast to the behavior of pure MnSi and expectations for the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, we find a significant temperature dependence to the magnitude and sign of anomalous Hall conductivity constant in Al or Ga substituted samples. This temperature dependence likely reflects changes in the spin-orbit coupling strength with temperature, which may have significant consequences on the helical and skyrmion states. We report on an angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) study of bulk electron-doped perovskite iridate, (Sr1-xLax)3Ir2O7. Fermi surface pockets are observed with a total electron count in keeping with that expected from La substitution. Depending on the energy and polarization of the incident photons, these pockets show up in the form of disconnected "Fermi arcs", reminiscent of those reported recently in surface electron-doped Sr2IrO4. Negative compressibility is a sign of thermodynamic instability of open or non-equilibrium systems. In quantum materials consisting of multiple mutually coupled subsystems, the compressibility of one subsystem can be negative if it is countered by positive compressibility of the others. Manifestations of this effect have so far been limited to low-dimensional dilute electron systems. Here we present evidence from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for negative electronic compressibility (NEC) in the quasi-three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit correlated metal (Sr1-xLax)3Ir2O7. Increased electron filling accompanies an anomalous decrease of the chemical potential, as indicated by the overall movement of the deep valence bands. Such anomaly, suggestive of NEC, is shown to be primarily driven by the lowering in energy of the conduction band as the correlated bandgap reduces. In topological insulators (TI), strong spin-orbit coupling results in non-trivial scattering processes of the surface states, whose effects include suppressed back scattering1, 2, 3, 4 weak anti-localization5, 6 and the possibility of an exotic Kondo effect that mimics graphene7. Introducing time reversal breaking perturbations and establishing long-range magnetic order has been theorized to lead to the formation of quantized magnetoelectric phenomena8, fractionalized charge excitations, and the appearance of quantum wire states9. A key, elusive, step in exploring these and other novel electronic phases is the experimental observation of charge backscattering due to spin-flip processes at the surface of a magnetically-doped TI. Here we utilize Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS) to probe the surface of a magnetically doped TI, Bi2-xFexTe3+d. Our measurements show the appearance of a hitherto unobserved channel of electronic backscattering along surface q-vector \Gamma\kappa. By combining FT-STS with angle-resolved photoemission data, we identify the momentum space origins of the observed q-vectors, which on comparison to a model calculation are enhanced by spin-flip scattering. Our findings present compelling evidence for the first spatial and momentum resolved measurements of magnetic impurity induced backscattering in a prototypical TI.
