Abstract Background The North Eastern Region (NER) of India is well known for its rich biodiversity and organic cultivation; however, this is one of the least investigated regions owing to its remoteness. A field study on papaya mealybug (PMB) was conducted to know its present status in Dibrugarh district of Assam, NER India, after its first entry in 2012. Results The pest was initially confined in urban and peri-urban localities in 2012 and has now made its entry even in remote villages too; however, many villages still remain uninfested. PMB has not damaged crops much the way it did in major papaya producing states of India. Out of 217 farmers surveyed, only 31.8% have experienced the infestation of PMB in their crops. The pest has now been recorded in places within an elevation of 98–129 m above MSL. The village homesteads help the pest establish in the ecosystem through natural host shifting. 89.9% farmers adopted either no management practices or applied non-chemical measures. We found the presence of more number of Spalgis immatures in the colonies of PMBs in hibiscus than in papaya. After the first invasion of PMB in Assam, initially it was also worried that the pest might invade tea crop and affect the tea economy of the state; however, no report on PMB infestation on tea crop has been found so far. Conclusions The PMB has acclimatized and established itself in the crop ecosystem of Assam by natural host shifting. The trend of infestation is constant or increasing. No programme on classical biological control of PMB was taken in the farmers’ fields of the state, but there is no hue and cry situation on the crop damage by PMB. High rainfall affected the spread of the pest and predation by Spalgis sp might have resulted in reduction in population. We recorded variable abundance of S. epeus larva in PMB colonies in different host plants based on which we can formulate the bio-control module for PMB. The detailed study on the role of rainfall and natural enemies on population dynamics of PMB is a researchable issue.

Abstract Background There is ongoing debate around rate versus rhythm control strategies for managing atrial fibrillation (AF), however, much of the data comes from Western cohorts. Kerala‐AF represents the largest prospective AF cohort study from the Indian subcontinent. Objectives To compare 12‐month outcomes between rate and rhythm control strategies. Methods Patients aged ≥18 years with non‐transient AF were recruited from 53 hospitals across Kerala. Patients were stratified by rate or rhythm control. The primary outcome was a composite of all‐cause mortality, arterial thromboembolism, acute coronary syndrome or hospitalization due to heart failure or arrhythmia at 12 months. Secondary outcomes included bleeding events and individual components of the primary. Predictors of the composite outcome were analysed by logistic regression. Results A total of 2901 patients (mean age 64.6 years, 51% female) were included (2464 rate control, 437 rhythm control). Rates of the primary composite outcome did not differ between groups (29.7% vs 30.0%; p = .955), nor did any component of the primary. Bleeding outcomes were also similar (1.6% vs 1.9%; p = .848). Background and Aim: In veterinary medicine, health-related quality-of-life index (QOLi) measurements are becoming increasingly important because they are a multifaceted concept that represents not only patients’ physical well-being but also clients’ emotional health. This study assessed QOLi in dogs receiving incremental intermittent hemodialysis (i-IHD) with high- and low-flux dialyzers. Materials and Methods: Thirty dogs diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) Stage IV were randomly divided into two groups of 15 dogs each. A high-flux dialyzer was used in Group I, whereas a low-flux dialyzer was used in Group II. i-IHD was performed on days 0, 2, 4, 19, and 34, whereas QOLi evaluation was performed on days 0, 15, 30, and 45. Results: Both groups exhibited considerable decreases in post-dialysis creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and phosphorus levels, while Group I experienced notable reductions in post-dialysis triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Dialysis adequacy did not show any significant difference between the clearance rates of high- and low-flux dialyzers. The QOLi assessment showed better post-dialysis scores in all categories except for water balance in Group I, while Group II demonstrated a worsening trend in scores for mental status, appetite, mobility, general health, and pain. Conclusion: In the first three sessions of i-IHD, dogs with CKD should be treated every other day, and the schedule can be extended by 15 days after that. A high-flux membrane, which effectively decreases triglyceride and cholesterol levels more than a low-flux membrane, warrants consideration for dogs with cardiovascular complications undergoing dialysis. The dialysis-related QOLi aids in clinical decision-making and encourages client engagement.

Introduction: This study investigates the outcomes of treating neglected unstable Hangman's fractures through a single-stage Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) procedure with tricortical iliac crest bone grafts. Methods: Five patients with neglected unstable Hangman's fractures, treated at our institution between March 2012 and March 2017, underwent C2-C3 ACDF. Functional outcomes were assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score and Neck Disability Index (NDI), and neurological evaluation was done using the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) grading system. The radiological assessment included serial plain radiographs and a computed tomography scan at a 12-month follow-up. Results: Postoperatively, C2-C3 angulation improved significantly, decreasing from 15° to 4.4°, and sagittal translation improved from 4.2 mm to 2 mm. The VAS score improved from 6.4 to 1.4 at 24 months postsurgery. Concurrently, NDI decreased from 70.4% to 14.8%. Fusion occurred in an average of 5.6 months. Neurologically, one patient improved from ASIA grade D to grade E, while the other four retained their grade E status. Conclusions: A single-stage ACDF with autologous iliac crest bone grafts is an effective surgical option for neglected type II/IIA Hangman's fractures, yielding satisfactory functional and radiological outcomes. This technique significantly corrects anterior translation and angulation, even in neglected cases, with the aid of intraoperative skull traction and plate reduction.

Abstract A crucial determining factor in agricultural productivity is biotic stress. In addition, supply of quality food to the ever-increasing world’s population has raised the food demand tremendously. Therefore, enhanced agricultural crop productivity is the only option to mitigate these concerns. It ultimately demanded the often and indiscriminate use of synthetic agrochemicals such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, etc. for the management of various biotic stresses including a variety of plant pathogens. However, the food chain and biosphere are severely impacted due to the use of such harmful agrochemicals and their byproducts. Hence, it is need of hour to search for novel, effective and ecofriendly approaches for the management of biotic stresses in crop plants. Particularly, in plant disease management, efforts are being made to take advantage of newly emerged science i.e. nanotechnology for the creation of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) such as metallic, oxide, sulphide, etc. through different routes and their application in plant disease management. Among these, green nanomaterials which are synthesized using environmentally friendly methods and materials reported to possess unique properties (such as high surface area, adjustable size and shape, and specific functionalities) making them ideal candidates for targeted disease control. Nanotechnology can stop crop losses by managing specific diseases from soil, plants, and hydroponic systems. This review mainly focuses on the application of biologically produced green NPs in the treatment of plant diseases caused due to bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The utilization of green synthesis of NPs in the creation of intelligent targeted pesticide and biomolecule control delivery systems, for disease management is considered environmentally friendly due to its pursuit of less hazardous, sustainable, and environmentally friendly methods.

Several researches conducted on rubberized concrete in the past but very few researchers explained the bonding effect of the waste tire rubber particles with different cementitious materials. In this research the effect of the fineness of the micro silica and its bonding with the rubber particles is studied. To check the influence of fractional replacement of cement using micro silica and discarded tire rubber as limited substitution of sand with providing pre-treatment to rubber particles, this experimental investigation has been conducted on concrete with varying percentage switch of cement using micro silica (SF), especially micro-silica was used in this study to exchange with cement by its weight. SF exchanged cement from 0% to 12% with an incremental ratio of 3%. Along with this, the sand was fractionally replaced using pretreated crumb rubber (CR) particles derived from end-of-life tires. The replacement ratio changed by 5% by the volume of sand, ranging from 0% to 20%. The pre-treatment process for CR was done using Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) of 1 Molarity, for achieving good bonding between cementitious material paste and rubber particles. Distinct fresh and hydrated concrete properties were assessed and compared with normal concrete (NC) having 0% SF and 0% CR. 17 concrete mixtures in all, together with the control mix, were assessed in this study with varying amounts of SF and CR. The bonding structure and impermeability were enhanced by using SF in concrete with promising enhancement in mechanical strengths. Based on the outcomes obtained from this research, the optimal proportion for partial substitution of cement and sand by SF and CR was fixed for the desired grade of concrete to provide an innovative form of concrete to the construction industry.

Abstract Background Biofilm formation is viewed as a vital mechanism in C. glabrata pathogenesis. Although, it plays a significant role in virulence but transcriptomic architecture and metabolic pathways governing the biofilm growth mode of C. glabrata remain elusive. The present study intended to investigate the genes implicated in biofilm growth phase of C. glabrata through global transcriptomic approach. Results Functional analysis of Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using gene ontology and pathways analysis revealed that upregulated genes are involved in the glyoxylate cycle, carbon-carbon lyase activity, pre-autophagosomal structure membrane and vacuolar parts whereas, down- regulated genes appear to be associated with glycolysis, ribonucleoside biosynthetic process, ribosomal and translation process in the biofilm growth condition. The RNA-Seq expression of eight selected DEGs (CgICL1, CgMLS1, CgPEP1, and CgNTH1, CgERG9, CgERG11, CgTEF3, and CgCOF1) was performed with quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). The gene expression profile of selected DEGs with RT-qPCR displayed a similar pattern of expression as observed in RNA-Seq. Phenotype screening of mutant strains generated for genes CgPCK1 and CgPEP1, showed that Cgpck1∆ failed to grow on alternative carbon substrate (Glycerol, Ethanol, Oleic acid) and similarly, Cgpep1∆ unable to grow on YPD medium supplemented with hydrogen peroxide. Our results suggest that in the absence of glucose, C. glabrata assimilate glycerol, oleic acid and generate acetyl coenzyme-A (acetyl-CoA) which is a central and connecting metabolite between catabolic and anabolic pathways (glyoxylate and gluconeogenesis) to produce glucose and fulfil energy requirements. Conclusions The study was executed using various approaches (transcriptomics, functional genomics and gene deletion) and it revealed that metabolic plasticity of C. glabrata (NCCPF-100,037) in biofilm stage modulates its virulence and survival ability to counter the stress and may promote its transition from commensal to opportunistic pathogen. The observations deduced from the present study along with future work on characterization of the proteins involved in this intricate process may prove to be beneficial for designing novel antifungal strategies.

Abstract Background Patients who have recurrent atrial fibrillation (AF) following redo catheter ablation may eventually be managed with a pace‐and‐ablate approach, involving pacemaker implant followed by atrioventricular nodal ablation (AVNA). We sought to determine which factors would predict subsequent AVNA in patients undergoing redo AF ablation. Methods We analyzed patients undergoing redo AF ablations between 2013 and 2019 at our institution. Follow‐up was censored on December 31, 2021. Patients with no available follow‐up data were excluded. Time‐to‐event analysis with Cox proportional hazard regression was used to compare those who underwent AVNA to those who did not. Abstract Orthopedic and dental implant failure continues to be a significant concern due to localized bacterial infections. Previous studies have attempted to improve implant surfaces by modifying their texture and roughness or coating them with antibiotics to enhance antibacterial properties for implant longevity. However, these approaches have demonstrated limited effectiveness. In this study, we attempted to engineer the titanium (Ti) alloy surface biomimetically at the nanometer scale, inspired by the cicada wing nanostructure using alkaline hydrothermal treatment (AHT) to simultaneously confer antibacterial properties and support the adhesion and proliferation of mammalian cells. The two modified Ti surfaces were developed using a 4 h and 8 h AHT process in 1 N NaOH at 230 °C, followed by a 2-hour post-calcination at 600 °C. We found that the control plates showed a relatively smooth surface, while the treatment groups (4 h & 8 h AHT) displayed nanoflower structures containing randomly distributed nano-spikes. The results demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in the contact angle of the treatment groups, which increased wettability characteristics. Abstract The present work describes the development of TiO2/SeO2 nanostructure as a potential candidate for visible light photocatalysis as well as selective fluorophore for the sensing of picric acid. The obtained nanostructure consists of uniform globular nanoparticles having approximate size of 170 nm and possess an optical band gap of 2.33 eV with absorption maxima at 473 nm. The photocatalyst was able to achieve 90.34% degradation efficiency for 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) with rate constant of 0.0046 min−1 in the visible region. Further the nanostructure was able to serve as a selective fluorophore for sensing of Picric acid portraying more than 95% of fluorescence quenching when the concentration of PA is 10–4 M. Theoretical calculations indicate the interaction of organic pollutants with the nanostructure and reveal that both picric acid (− 66.21 kcal/mol) and 2,4-DCP (− 12.31 kcal/mol) possess more negative binding energy values demonstrating a strong interaction of both with the nanostructure, making it suitable for the degradation as well as sensing of organic pollutants. Thus this study explains the potential of prepared catalyst for waste water treatment.

Mesodiverticular band associated with Meckel’s diverticulum can lead to surgical emergencies like intestinal obstruction or volvulus and may prove fatal as this pathology is quite rare, it may escape the clinical diagnosis. This band needs to be excised during emergent laparotomy along with Meckel’s diverticulectomy. A high level of clinical suspicion and surgical acumen is required to manage this rare condition and have an uneventful recovery of the patient.

This condition must be kept in mind during the mango season while dealing with a case of intestinal obstruction in an emergency.

Abstract Purpose This research aims to study the impact of sustainable supply chain management on both competitive advantage and organizational performance in the Ethiopian manufacturing industry. Design/methodology/approach The objectives are achieved through collecting and analyzing data from 221 Ethiopian manufacturing industries. This research employs a quantitative approach, specifically descriptive and causal research methods. The data are collected by questionnaires administered directly to a sample of 221 respondents who are managers and supervisors in the manufacturing industry. In addition, data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling in the Smart-PLS Software version (SmartPLS 4.0). Findings The research reveals that SSCM substantially and positively impacts competitive advantage and organizational performance. Furthermore, statistical findings prove the connection between competitive advantage and organizational performance. Moreover, competitive advantage indirectly influences the relationship between SSCM and OP. The results suggest that successfully implementing SSCM can improve competitive advantage and OP. Originality/value Considering the triple-bottom-line approach and the mediating effects of competitive advantage, this study is the first to analyze the relationship between SSCM and manufacturing performance in Ethiopia. This study adds to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the impact of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) on competitive advantage and organizational performance in the manufacturing industry of emerging markets. Research limitations/implications The research is based on a cross-sectional study, which may prevent the generalization of findings derived from the current study. The analyzed variable in this study quantified OP, which is widely recognized as a very dynamic concept.

Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the soft tissue of the sacrococcygeal region and remains a challenging disease for surgeons to treat. With controversies in management to prevent recurrence leading to economic burden to the patient, these cases require special care by expert surgeons. From Jan 2023 to Nov 2023, 10 patients with pilonidal sinus were treated with complete excision of the tract and reconstruction using a rhomboid flap. The factors evaluated included the duration of surgery, postoperative pain, length of hospital stay, and postoperative complications. The patients were followed up on an outpatient basis, monthly for the first three months. The majority of the patients were young males with a mean age of 28 years. The surgery time was 40 to 75 minutes, and the mean operation time was 55 minutes. The stitches were removed after 2 weeks. Among complications, two patients developed mild discharge with infection. In one patient, necrosis at the tip of the flap was noted. We recommend the Rhomboid flap as a method of choice for surgical management of Pilonidal sinus in a postgraduate medical college as it is easy to teach, learn, and perform and gives complete recovery of the patient with negligible recurrence rate.

Abstract The benefits of advancements in information and communication technologies have proliferated in manufacturing applications as more industries are migrating towards industry 4.0 compliance. The industry 4.0 process lines should be dynamic and reconfigurable. Digital twin (DT), supported by real‐time data, is getting wide acceptance as a tool for monitoring and control of complex processes. Virtual commissioning (VC) has played a vital role in the software‐based validation of the control systems. A DT‐based VC methodology is proposed to evaluate and validate a reconfigured process line. The proposed new asset is commissioned virtually in the DT environment maintaining other stations and parameters synchronised. The proposed methodology is validated in a modular production system assembly line. A storage and retrieval station is virtually commissioned by the hardware in loop technique in the assembly line DT with a station time error of 1.3% between the VC model and the actual assembly line data. The case study demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed methodology in assessing the impacts due to reconfiguration of a process line. The findings offer significant support to decision makers in taking informed decisions and to reduce unforeseen interruptions resulting from the integration of a new asset with the existing process line.

Introduction Social media use and vaping nicotine are highly prevalent in the daily lives of young adults, especially among Mexican-American college students. The excessive and compulsive use of social media platforms, coupled with the urge to stay continuously connected, can lead to problematic social media use. To date, no studies have explored the impact of problematic social media use on the daily patterns of vaping among this vulnerable population. Methods In Spring 2023, we employed Ecological Momentary Assessment over a period of 14 days to collect real-time daily data on participants’ social media use and vaping behaviors via a mobile phone–based application. Participants were 51 Mexican-American college students aged 18–25 years, 72.5% female, who were current vapers. We used generalized linear regression models to examine differences in vaping behaviors among participants with and without problematic social media use. BackgroundSocial media posts that portray vaping in positive social contexts shape people’s perceptions and serve to normalize vaping. Despite restrictions on depicting or promoting controlled substances, vape-related content is easily accessible on TikTok. There is a need to understand strategies used in promoting vaping on TikTok, especially among susceptible youth audiences. ObjectiveThis study seeks to comprehensively describe direct (ie, explicit promotional efforts) and indirect (ie, subtler strategies) themes promoting vaping on TikTok using a mixture of computational and qualitative thematic analyses of social media posts. In addition, we aim to describe how these themes might play a role in normalizing vaping behavior on TikTok for youth audiences, thereby informing public health communication and regulatory policies regarding vaping endorsements on TikTok. MethodsWe collected 14,002 unique TikTok posts using 50 vape-related hashtags (eg, #vapetok and #boxmod). Using the k-means unsupervised machine learning algorithm, we identified clusters and then categorized posts qualitatively based on themes. Next, we organized all videos from the posts thematically and extracted the visual features of each theme using 3 machine learning–based model architectures: residual network (ResNet) with 50 layers (ResNet50), Visual Geometry Group model with 16 layers, and vision transformer. We chose the best-performing model, ResNet50, to thoroughly analyze the image clustering output. To assess clustering accuracy, we examined 4.01% (441/10,990) of the samples from each video cluster. Finally, we randomly selected 50 videos (5% of the total videos) from each theme, which were qualitatively coded and compared with the machine-derived classification for validation. ResultsWe successfully identified 5 major themes from the TikTok posts. Vape product marketing (1160/10,990, 8.28%) reflected direct marketing, while the other 4 themes reflected indirect marketing: TikTok influencer (3775/14,002, 26.96%), general vape (2741/14,002, 19.58%), vape brands (2042/14,002, 14.58%), and vaping cessation (1272/14,002, 9.08%). The ResNet50 model successfully classified clusters based on image features, achieving an average F1-score of 0.97, the highest among the 3 models. Qualitative content analyses indicated that vaping was depicted as a normal, routine part of daily life, with TikTok influencers subtly incorporating vaping into popular culture (eg, gaming, skateboarding, and tattooing) and social practices (eg, shopping sprees, driving, and grocery shopping). ConclusionsThe results from both computational and qualitative analyses of text and visual data reveal that vaping is normalized on TikTok. Our identified themes underscore how everyday conversations, promotional content, and the influence of popular figures collectively contribute to depicting vaping as a normal and accepted aspect of daily life on TikTok. Our study provides valuable insights for regulatory policies and public health initiatives aimed at tackling the normalization of vaping on social media platforms.

Dyes pose a significant environmental hazard due to their widespread use and tenacity in water bodies, resulting in adverse ecological and health effects. Many strategies have been investigated for the removal of dyes, and adsorption has emerged as a viable technique. Biochar-based adsorbents provide a sustainable alternative because of their high adsorption capacity, variable surface characteristics, and widespread availability. Biochar has improved adsorption properties similar to specific surface area, porosity, and total pore volume when mixed with metal nanoparticles due to synergistic interactions. It is crucial to comprehend the adsorption isotherm and kinetic models that control dye adsorption onto biochar because they provide insight into the mechanism and equilibrium behavior, respectively. The adsorption process's viability and energetics are further clarified by thermodynamic studies. Experiments and parameter optimization are guided by computational studies that use methods such as density functional theory (DFT) and response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize adsorption processes by giving insight into the system's relationship between multiple independent variables and multiple response variables and electron structure. This review also highlights the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of biochar/metal nanoparticle composites by discussing techniques for their regeneration and reuse and also explains the adsorption mechanism of dye by biochar/metal nanoparticle composites.

SS316L possesses comparatively low wear and abrasion resistance properties and thus needs proper surface modification to sustain under severe industrial applications. Cobalt-based Stellite 6, a suitable coating for such applications, contains 4–5 % of tungsten that provides solid solution strengthening to the cobalt-based matrix, due to which it shows good wear resistance in abnormal working conditions. Stellite 6 is dominated by face-centered cubic (FCC) and hexagonal close packed (HCP) cobalt along with different carbide phases such as M7C3, M23C6, MC and M6C where M is Cr, W, Mo, Co and Fe. Weld deposited cobalt-based Stellite 6 coating on SS316L substrate, contains FCC structure as primary phases. Pure cobalt contains a stable HCP phase at temperature below 417 °C and FCC phase at and above 417 °C up to melting point of pure cobalt i.e., 1495 °C. Under the frictional stresses caused during wear test, impact more on FCC cobalt than HCP cobalt due to the high slip system of FCC. Because of this, FCC cobalt underwent through high wear losses compared to HCP cobalt in cobalt-based coating. Present study revealed that, high wear losses are seen in samples where FCC cobalt phases are dominant. The observed mechanism by SEM shows abrasive wear in which material removal takes place by ploughing, micro cutting and indentation. The targeted industrial applications where such wear losses are supposed to happen includes slurry transportation applications such as pipes, sea engineering components, submersible pumps, control valves.

Abstract BackgroundWeb-based physical activity interventions often fail to reach the anticipated public health impact due to insufficient use by the intended audiences. ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to use a human-centered design process to optimize the user experience of the Interrupting Prolonged sitting with ACTivity (InPACT) at Home website to promote youth physical activity participation. MethodsQualitative interviews were conducted to assess engagement and pain points with the InPACT at Home website. Interview data were used to create affinity maps to identify themes of user responses, conduct a heuristic evaluation according to Nielsen’s usability heuristics framework, and complete a competitive analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of competitors who offered similar products. ResultsKey themes from end user interviews included liking the website design, finding the website difficult to navigate, and wanting additional features (eg, library of watched videos). The website usability issues identified were lack of labeling and categorization of exercise videos, hidden necessary actions and options hindering users from decision-making, error-prone conditions, and high cognitive load of the website. Competitive analysis results revealed that YouTube received the highest usability ratings followed by the Just Dance and Presidential Youth Fitness Program websites. ConclusionsHuman-centered design approaches are useful for bringing end users and developers together to optimize user experience and impact public health. Future research is needed to examine the effectiveness of the InPACT at Home website redesign to attract new users and retain current users, with the end goal of increasing youth physical activity engagement.

# Background The integration of digital health (eHealth) interventions into primary healthcare systems has gained recognition lately in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) to enhance healthcare quality, accessibility, and efficiency. This scoping review aims to identify and assess eHealth interventions implemented in primary care settings in LMICs for further development and adaptation. # Methods and analysis We will search two electronic databases, such as Scopus and Embase, to identify peer-reviewed studies reporting on eHealth interventions implemented in primary care settings within LMICs. This review will encompass evidence published in the English language without a time frame restriction. We will remove duplicates from the search, and two reviewers will independently assess all articles for eligibility by first screening the title and abstract, followed by a full-text review. Eligible articles will be extracted, and data will be charted according to types of intervention and settings using a standardised form. # Ethics and dissemination There is no ethical review required for this scoping review. We plan to disseminate the findings by presentations at conferences and publishing in open-access journal.

Introduction In liver cirrhosis, acute variceal bleeding (AVB) is associated with a 1-year mortality rate of up to 40%. Data on early or pre-emptive transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent–shunt (TIPSS) in AVB is inconclusive and may not reflect current management strategies. Randomised controlled trial of EArly transjugular intrahepatiC porTosystemic stent–shunt in AVB (REACT-AVB) aims to investigate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of early TIPSS in patients with cirrhosis and AVB after initial bleeding control.Methods and analysis REACT-AVB is a multicentre, randomised controlled, open-label, superiority, two-arm, parallel-group trial with an internal pilot. The two interventions allocated randomly 1:1 are early TIPSS within 4 days of diagnostic endoscopy or secondary prophylaxis with endoscopic therapy in combination with non-selective beta blockers. Patients aged ≥18 years with cirrhosis and Child-Pugh Score 7–13 presenting with AVB with endoscopic haemostasis are eligible for inclusion. The primary outcome is transplant-free survival at 1 year post randomisation. Secondary endpoints include transplant-free survival at 6 weeks, rebleeding, serious adverse events, other complications of cirrhosis, Child-Pugh and Model For End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores at 6 and 12 months, health-related quality of life, use of healthcare resources, cost-effectiveness and use of cross-over therapies. The sample size is 294 patients over a 4-year recruitment period, across 30 hospitals in the UK.Ethics and dissemination Research ethics committee of National Health Service has approved REACT-AVB (reference number: 23/WM/0085). The results will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. A lay summary will also be emailed or posted to participants before publication.Trial registration number ISRCTN85274829; protocol version 3.0, 1 July 2023.

The incidence of nausea, vomiting, and symptoms relating to vagal nerve injury remains high after atrial fibrillation ablation, with many patients reporting symptoms in the hours to months after their procedure. These are often underreported in literature, and this editorial piece opines about a study assessing this in detail.

Abstract Background The production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) among uropathogens, particularly E. coli and Klebsiella spp., poses a severe public health concern. This study explored the epidemiology of ESBL-producing E. coli and Klebsiella spp. isolated from urine samples obtained at a tertiary care children's hospital in Nepal. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2016 to February 2017. A total of 745 clean catch urine samples were obtained from pediatric patients under the age of 13 and subjected to semiquantitative culture. E. coli and Klebsiella spp. were identified using standard laboratory protocols. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method, and ESBL producers were phenotypically identified using the combined disk method. Results Among the bacterial isolates, E. coli predominated, accounting for 139 (81.8%) positive cases. Notably, E. coli showed high susceptibility to nitrofurantoin, with 117 (84.2%) isolates being susceptible. Meanwhile, K. pneumoniae showed high susceptibility to gentamicin, with 21 (91.3%) isolates being susceptible. Of the 163 isolates of E. coli and Klebsiella spp., 62 (38.0%) were identified as multidrug-resistant (MDR), with 42 (25.8%) confirmed as phenotypic ESBL producers. Remarkably, all 41 (100%) ESBL-producing E. coli isolates were susceptible to imipenem. Conclusions The prevalence of ESBL producers among E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates from pediatric patients underscores the importance of antimicrobial stewardship. Nitrofurantoin and gentamicin emerge as effective empirical treatment choices against these pathogens in children. However, the high rates of multidrug resistance and ESBL production highlight the necessity for routine surveillance, and early detection strategies to manage such infections effectively.

Existing mRNA COVID-19 vaccines have shown efficacy in reducing severe cases and fatalities. However, their effectiveness against infection caused by emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants has waned considerably, necessitating the development of variant vaccines. Ideally, next-generation vaccines will be capable of eliciting broader and more sustained immune responses to effectively counteract new variants. Additionally, in vitro assays that more closely represent virus neutralization in humans would greatly assist in the analysis of protective vaccine-induced antibody responses. Here, we present findings from a SARS-CoV-2 VLP vaccine encompassing three key structural proteins: Spike (S), Envelope (E), and Membrane (M). The VLP vaccine effectively produced neutralizing antibodies as determined by surrogate virus neutralization test, and induced virus-specific T-cell responses: predominantly CD4+, although CD8+ T cell responses were detected. T cell responses were more prominent with vaccine delivered with AddaVax compared to vaccine alone. The adjuvanted vaccine was completely protective against live virus challenge in mice. Furthermore, we utilized air–liquid-interface (ALI)-differentiated human nasal epithelium (HNE) as an in vitro system, which authentically models human SARS-CoV-2 infection and neutralization. We show that immune sera from VLP-vaccinated mice completely neutralized SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, demonstrating the potential of ALI-HNE to assess vaccine induced Nab.

Background: Herbal cosmetics, particularly herbal hair oils, have gained popularity due to their perceived efficacy and minimal adverse effects. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate herbal hair oils for promoting hair growth. Methodology: Various herbal extracts, including Coconut, Curry leaves, Amla, Fenugreek, and Onion, were prepared and incorporated into virgin Coconut oil. Phytochemical screening, total flavonoid content, organoleptic evaluation, chemical analysis (acid value, saponification value, specific gravity), stability studies, antioxidant assay (DPPH), antimicrobial assay, sensitivity studies, and in-vivo hair growth activity were conducted. Results: Organoleptic evaluation revealed characteristic odors and colors across formulations. Chemical analysis showed acceptable values for acid value (0.68 - 1.86 mg KOH/g), saponification value (117.87 - 224.27 mg KOH/g), and specific gravity (0.865 - 0.933 g/cm^3). Stability studies over 45 days demonstrated consistent physicochemical properties. The DPPH assay indicated dose-dependent antioxidant activity, with inhibition ranging from 13.8% to 66.5%. Antimicrobial assay showed inhibition zones ranging from 6 mm to 20 mm against Staphylococcus aureus. Sensitivity studies exhibited no adverse reactions. In-vivo hair growth activity demonstrated significant improvements compared to controls. Discussion: The formulated herbal hair oils exhibited promising physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial efficacy, safety, and hair growth promotion in animal models. These findings suggest their potential as natural remedies for hair care. Conclusion: Herbal hair oils formulated in this study show significant potential for promoting hair growth and addressing hair-related concerns. Whereas, formulation F3 shown significant efficacy across multiple parameters among the formulations. Further research and clinical trials are warranted to validate their efficacy and safety for human use.

Abstract The XBB.1.5 variant of SARS-CoV-2 has rapidly achieved global dominance and exhibits a high growth advantage over previous variants. Preliminary reports suggest that the success of XBB.1.5 stems from mutations within its spike glycoprotein, causing immune evasion and enhanced receptor binding. We present receptor binding studies that demonstrate retention of binding contacts with the human ACE2 receptor and a striking decrease in binding to mouse ACE2 due to the revertant R493Q mutation. Despite extensive evasion of antibody binding, we highlight a region on the XBB.1.5 spike protein receptor binding domain (RBD) that is recognized by serum antibodies from a donor with hybrid immunity, collected prior to the emergence of the XBB.1.5 variant. T cell assays reveal high frequencies of XBB.1.5 spike-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells amongst donors with hybrid immunity, with the CD4+ T cells skewed towards a Th1 cell phenotype and having attenuated effector cytokine secretion as compared to ancestral spike protein-specific cells. Thus, while the XBB.1.5 variant has retained efficient human receptor binding and gained antigenic alterations, it remains susceptible to recognition by T cells induced via vaccination and previous infection.

Study Design A newly proposed scoring tool was designed to assist in the clinical management of adult thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis (TB). Purpose To formulate a comprehensive yet simple scoring tool to guide decision-making in the management of adult thoracolumbar spinal TB. Overview of Literature Spine surgeons have differing consensus in defining the threshold grade for clinico-radiological parameters when deciding between operative or conservative treatment for adult thoracolumbar spinal TB. Currently, the void in decision-making from the lack of well-defined guidelines is compensated by the surgeon’s experience in treating these patients. To the best of our knowledge, no scoring system holistically integrates multiple facets of spinal TB to guide clinical decision-making. Methods The RAND/University of California, Los Angeles appropriateness method was employed among an expert panel of 10 spine surgeons from four apex tertiary care centers. Vital characteristics that independently influenced treatment decisions in spinal TB were identified, and a scoring tool was formulated. Points were assigned for each component based on their severity. The cutoff scores to guide clinical management were determined from the receiver operating characteristic curve based on the retrospective records of 151 patients treated operatively or non-operatively with improved functional outcomes at the 1-year follow-up. Results The components of the comprehensive spinal TB score (CSTS) are pain, kyphosis angle, vertebral destruction, and neurological status. A score classification of 6.5 was established to guide the patient toward conservative, conservative/operative, and operative management, respectively. Conclusions The CSTS was designed to reflect the essential indicators of mechanical stability, neurological stability, and disease process stabilization in spinal TB. The scoring tool is devised to be practical and serve as a common language in the spine community to facilitate discussions and decision-making in thoracolumbar spinal TB. The validity, reliability, and reproducibility of this tool must be assessed through multicenter long-term studies.

Umbilicus is a rare site of endometrioma. Spontaneous or primary umbilical endometrioma are still rarer. A 41years old primipara presented with 1.5 years history of nodular umbilical swelling with cyclical pain and increase in size occurring more pronounced during menses with no prior history of any abdominal surgery or procedure or abdominal trauma. Clinical history gave a likely possibility of umbilical endometrioma. Surgical excision was done as she had not responded to prior hormonal treatment and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis.

Background: Microdiscectomy is a commonly performed surgical technique used to treat lumbar disc prolapse. A minimally invasive alternative called tubular discectomy is hypothesized to cause less tissue damage and result in a faster recovery compared to conventional discectomy. Previous studies have found similar pain resolution outcomes between two techniques, but they were underpowered and lacked data on differences in recovery time. Our study aims to compare functional outcomes, and assess differences in recovery time and perioperative complications between the two procedures. Materials and Methods: This prospective randomized study included 63 patients, divided into two groups. The preoperative evaluation was done by clinical examination and documenting Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores. Intra- and postoperative complications were also noted. Postoperative follow-up assessment was done at regular intervals up to 2 years. Results: Both groups showed a significant decrease in ODI, VAS leg and back scores following surgery, which continued to decline throughout the follow-up period. However, there was no significant difference in outcomes between the two treatment groups at each postoperative follow-up. There were also no significant differences in blood loss or intra- and postoperative complications. Patients who underwent tubular microdiscectomy had a significantly shorter hospital stay compared to conventional microdiscectomy. Conclusion: Both conventional and tubular microdiscectomy are effective means of treating disc herniation. While patients who underwent tubular microdiscectomy had a shorter hospital stay, the modest clinical benefits do not necessarily warrant the transition to a minimally invasive approach given the learning curve associated with the technique.

The rise in pollution rates and ecological disasters resulting from industrial production has prompted numerous scholars and industry specialists to focus on Sustainable Production and Consumption matters within the framework of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM). The interest in sustainable supply chain management has significantly increased in recent years, spanning both business and academic sectors. This phenomenon is seen in the growing prevalence of papers, conferences, specialized periodicals, and websites exclusively focused on the subject matter. Nevertheless, the importance of sustainable development in developing economies has only just started to be acknowledged. This literature review aims to assess existing research on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) in developing nations while considering a worldwide perspective. This paper thoroughly examines the rapid expansion of the subject from an evolutionary perspective; aimed at comprehending the progression of sustainability concerns by examining patterns across different industries, and economies, and employing diverse approaches. An extensive thematic analysis was conducted on 56 selected publications published between 2010 and 2023, emphasizing the growth and significance of the knowledge base. The analysis is conducted utilizing a descriptive and content-oriented methodology. Subsequently, the results are presented, demonstrating an increasing interest in Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM). Nevertheless, there is a conspicuous discrepancy in the extent of research carried out on this subject in emerging economies as opposed to industrialized ones. The findings indicate that the context in less developed countries plays a crucial role in carrying out empirical or case study research. Moreover, it is crucial to analyze how the integration of the three dimensions of sustainability impacts the efficiency of the supply chain, especially when considering the perspective of an emerging economy. Hence, the limitations of this investigation are delineated. Ultimately, it is crucial to do further research from multiple angles within the supply chain, encompassing collaboration, sustainable practices, innovation, sourcing, and supplier growth, with a special emphasis on the position and background of rising countries.

Abstract Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) is increasingly performed using endoscopic and microscopic visualization, and the captured video can be used for surgical education and development of predictive artificial intelligence (AI) models. Video datasets depicting adverse event management are also valuable, as predictive models not exposed to adverse events may exhibit poor performance when these occur. Given that no dedicated spine surgery video datasets for AI model development are publicly available, we introduce Simulated Outcomes for Durotomy Repair in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SOSpine). A validated MISS cadaveric dural repair simulator was used to educate neurosurgery residents, and surgical microscope video recordings were paired with outcome data. Objects including durotomy, needle, grasper, needle driver, and nerve hook were then annotated. Altogether, SOSpine contains 15,698 frames with 53,238 annotations and associated durotomy repair outcomes. For validation, an AI model was fine-tuned on SOSpine video and detected surgical instruments with a mean average precision of 0.77. In summary, SOSpine depicts spine surgeons managing a common complication, providing opportunities to develop surgical AI models.

Abstract Purpose The current study aims to explore the impact of corporate governance (CG) mechanisms, as measured by board size, board meeting frequency, board gender diversity, number of board subcommittees, board remuneration, size of audit committee, and audit committee meeting frequency, on bank intellectual capital (as calculated by the modified value-added intellectual coefficient (M-VAIC) and its components (human capital efficiency (HCE), structural capital efficiency (SCE), and relational capital efficiency (SCE)). Design/methodology/approach Panel data is extracted from the financial and other internal reports of 14 commercial banks and the National Bank of Ethiopia for the period 2011–2022. A two-step system generalized method of moments (2SYS-GMM) was used to account for the unobserved endogeneity and heteroscedasticity problems. Findings The empirical findings suggest that board size and board meeting frequency have a negative and significant impact on all IC performance measures. Besides, audit committee size has a negative and significant effect on HCE, SCE, and M-VAIC of the banking industry in Ethiopia. Moreover, board remuneration has a significant positive relationship with IC efficiency (HCE, SCE, and M-VAIC). Also, audit committee meeting frequency has a positive and significant effect on the HCE of banks. However, board gender diversity and the number of board subcommittees have not made statistically significant contributions to IC performance. Research limitation/implication The study is limited in its use of seven dimensions of CG and future studies can use other alternative accounts for CG variables. Next, this study applies only to commercial banks; hence, future studies can include other financial as well as non-financial organizations such as insurance companies, microfinance institutions, manufacturing, and other sectors. Practical implications This study contributes to helping the regulators and practitioners of the banking industry improve the existing standards and guidelines for CG practices to strengthen their IC performance. The findings may also give input for policymakers to integrate the intellectual capital in the decision-making process for policy formulation and implementation for the establishment of a robust banking sector. Originality/value Considering the modified value-added IC coefficient (M-VAIC) and 2SYS-GMM models, this research is the first study to analyze the relationships between CG and banks’ IC in Ethiopia.

Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent of amebiasis, is one of the top three parasitic causes of mortality worldwide. However, no vaccine exists against amebiasis. Using a lead candidate vaccine containing the LecA fragment of Gal-lectin and GLA-3M-052 liposome adjuvant, we immunized rhesus macaques via intranasal or intramuscular routes. The vaccine elicited high-avidity functional humoral responses as seen by the inhibition of amebic attachment to mammalian target cells by plasma and stool antibodies. Importantly, antigen-specific IFN-γ-secreting peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and IgG/IgA memory B cells (BMEM) were detected in immunized animals. Furthermore, antigen-specific antibody and cellular responses were maintained for at least 8 months after the final immunization as observed by robust LecA-specific BMEM as well as IFN-γ+ PBMC responses. Overall, both intranasal and intramuscular immunizations elicited a durable and functional response in systemic and mucosal compartments, which supports advancing the LecA+GLA-3M-052 liposome vaccine candidate to clinical testing.

ABSTRACT Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) patients are a key source of Leishmania donovani parasites, hindering the goal of eliminating visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Monitoring treatment response and parasite susceptibility is essential due to increasing drug resistance. We assessed the drug susceptibility of PKDL isolates (n = 18) from pre-miltefosine (MIL) era (1997–2004) with isolates (n = 16) from the post-miltefosine era (2010–2019) and post-miltefosine treatment relapse isolates (n = 5) towards miltefosine and amphotericin B (AmB) at promastigote stage and towards sodium antimony gluconate (SAG) at amastigote stage. PKDL isolates were examined for mutation in gene-encoding AQP1 transporter, C26882T mutation on chromosome 24, and miltefosine-transporter (MT). PKDL isolates from the post-miltefosine era were significantly more susceptible to SAG than SAG-resistant isolates from the pre-miltefosine era (P = 0.0002). There was no significant difference in the susceptibility of parasites to miltefosine between pre- and post-miltefosine era isolates. The susceptibility of PKDL isolates towards AmB remained unchanged between the pre- and post-miltefosine era. However, the post-miltefosine era isolates had a higher IC50 value towards AmB compared with PKDL relapse isolates. We did not find any association between AQP1 gene sequence variation and susceptibility to SAG, or between miltefosine susceptibility and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs in the MT gene. This study demonstrates that recent isolates of Leishmania have resumed susceptibility to antimonials in vitro. The study also offers significant insights into the intrinsic drug susceptibility of Leishmania parasites over the past two decades, covering the period before the introduction of miltefosine and after its extensive use.IMPORTANCEPost-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) patients, a key source of Leishmania donovani parasites, hinder eliminating visceral-leishmaniasis. Assessment of the susceptibility of PKDL isolates to antimony, miltefosine (MIL), and amphotericin-B indicated that recent isolates remain susceptible to antimony, enabling its use with other drugs for treating PKDL.

This research introduces a novel approach to repurposing walnut shells, an abundant agricultural waste, to synthesize sustainable nitrogen-doped activated carbon (N@AC). The resulting material exhibits remarkable properties suitable for dual applications in high-performance all-solid-state supercapacitors and efficient Rhodamine B dye (RhB) adsorption. In a three-electrode setup, the N@AC electrode exhibits an impressive specific capacitance of 484.6 Fg−1 at 1 Ag−1 and remarkable long-term stability, maintaining 97.4% of its initial performance even after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Simultaneously, the all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor configuration (N@AC//N@AC) demonstrates outstanding specific capacitance, registering at 168.8 Fg−1 at 1 Ag−1, accompanied by a favourable rate capability of 67.3% at 10 Ag−1. Notably, the N@AC//N@AC configuration attains a high energy density of 39.8 WhKg−1 at 1 Ag−1. Furthermore, N@AC//N@AC exhibits favourable cyclic stability, retaining 83.91% of its initial capacitance even after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, the adsorption efficiency of N@AC toward RhB is scrutinized, highlighting its efficacy in addressing environmental remediation challenges. The porous architecture and nitrogen functionalities of N@AC play a crucial role in expeditiously eliminating organic pollutants from aqueous solutions, offering a sustainable approach to treating wastewater. Optimal conditions for the highest RhB adsorption are identified: pH 7.2, a contact duration of 180 min, and an initial dye concentration of 20 mgL−1. Thermodynamic evaluations, encompassing the determination of ΔH◦, ΔH◦, and ΔS◦, signify the endothermic and spontaneous nature of the adsorption process. In desorption investigations, it is noted that H2O, employed as an eluting agent, proficiently releases 87.35% of the adsorbed RhB dye.

Introduction Gastrointestinal hospitalisations in the USA cause over US$130 billion in expenditures, and acute pancreatitis is a leading cause of these hospitalisations. Adequate pain control is one of the primary treatment goals for acute pancreatitis. Though opioids are commonly used for analgesia in these patients, there have been concerns about short-term and long-term side effects of using opioids. Recently, non-opioid medications have been studied to treat pain in patients with acute pancreatitis. This systematic review and network meta-analysis aims to assess the comparative efficacy of analgesic medication for non-severe, acute pancreatitis.Methods and analysis We will search multiple electronic databases for randomised controlled trials that study pain management in patients with non-severe, acute pancreatitis. The intervention will be any analgesic for acute pancreatitis in the hospital setting. The comparison group will be patients who received a placebo or other active interventions for pain management. The primary outcomes of interest include pain scores and the need for supplementary analgesia. The secondary outcomes will be serious adverse events, local complications, progression to severe pancreatitis, transfer to the intensive care unit, length of hospitalisation, time to start enteral feeds, 30-day all-cause mortality and Quality of Life Scale scores. If sufficient homogeneity exists among included studies, the findings will be pooled using a traditional pairwise and network meta-analysis. The risk of bias in randomised control trials will be evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach will be used to report the certainty of evidence.Ethics and dissemination This systematic review will not involve direct contact with human subjects. The findings of this review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. They will give healthcare providers a better awareness of the optimal analgesic medication for pain treatment in non-severe, acute pancreatitis.

Abstract The limited availability of molecularly targeted low‐molecular‐weight imaging agents for monitoring multiple myeloma (MM)‐targeted therapies has been a significant challenge in the field. In response, a first‐in‐class peptide‐based radiotracer, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206, is developed that can be seamlessly integrated into the standard clinical workflow and is specifically designed to noninvasively quantify CD38 levels and pharmacodynamics by positron emission tomography (PET). A bicyclic peptide, AJ206, is synthesized and exhibits high affinity to CD38 (KD: 19.1 ± 0.99 × 10−9 m) by surface plasmon resonance. Further, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206‐PET shows high contrast within 60 min and suitable absorbed dose estimates for clinical use. Additionally, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206 detects CD38 expression in cell line‐derived xenografts, patient‐derived xenografts (PDXs), and disseminated disease models in a manner consistent with flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry findings. Moreover, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206‐PET successfully quantifies CD38 pharmacodynamics in PDXs, revealing increased CD38 expression in the tumor following all‐trans retinoic acid (ATRA) therapy. In conclusion, [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206 exhibits the salient features required for clinical translation, providing CD38‐specific high‐contrast images in multiple models of MM. [68Ga]Ga‐AJ206‐PET could be useful for quantifying total CD38 levels and pharmacodynamics during therapy to evaluate approved and new therapies in MM and other diseases with CD38 involvement.

This single-center, prospective, observational study was conducted at a tertiary-care center over a span of two years. Patients presenting with acute Anterior-Wall STEMI were included as a study population. The subgroups included qRBBB pattern on ECG and non-qRBBB group. Among 1128 patients included in the study, 100 (11.28 %) patients presented with qRBBB pattern. Increased risk of cardiogenic shock, increased hospital-stay, a higher Killip class on presentation, high incidence of recanalized IRA, remarkably depressed LVEF were significantly associated with qRBBB-MI, which is a menacing form of ACS that leads not only to a high mortality but also to a long-term morbidity.

An organocatalytic Markovnikov-type bromo-aminoxidation of styrene derivatives was achieved by using in-situ-generated bromine and N-oxyl radicals, and the desired products were obtained in moderate to good yields. The bromine radical was generated from phenyliodine(III) bis(3-bromopropionate) through consecutive decarboxylation and deethylenation reactions via an organocatalytic SET process. Phenyliodine(III) bis(3-bromopropionate) also served as the oxidant for the generation of the N-oxyl radicals, while the N-oxyl radical was also crucial for the generation of the key β-enaminyl radical intermediate that was required for the SET process.

Bakanae disease caused by Fusarium fujikuroi is emerging in India. In this work, fungicides and biocontrol agents were evaluated as seed, seedling treatment, and foliar spray(s) against bakanae disease in rice under field conditions. Carbendazim (50% WP) was found to be the most effective fungicide for seed and seedling root dip treatments. Soil drenching with 0.25% carbendazim (50% WP) 5 days before transplanting of seedlings was effective for large scale treatments. Foliar spray of 0.1% tebuconazole 50%+ trifloxystrobin 25% w/w (75 WG) significantly reduced the percentage of infected seeds (7.17%) compared with the control (32.50%). The minimum disease incidence (31%) was observed when seeds were treated with Talaromyces flavus. Individual treatments were integrated in the form of six management modules and evaluated under the field conditions of New Delhi (India) and Pusa Bihar (India) with the susceptible cultivars ‘Pusa Basmati 1121’ and ‘Pusa 1176’. Bakanae disease incidence was lower in the modules tested compared with the inoculated control or the individual treatment. The most favorable results at two locations achieved the lowest disease incidence of 7% and 2.41%.

A potent effector of innate immunity, the complement system contributes significantly to the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study investigated the role of the complement cascade in neurobehavioral outcomes and neuropathology after TBI. Agents acting at different levels of the complement system, including 1) C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-Inh), 2) CR2-Crry, an inhibitor of all pathways acting at C3, and 3) the selective C5aR1 antagonist, PMX205, were administered at 1?h post-TBI. Their effects were evaluated on motor function using the rotarod apparatus, cognitive function using the active place avoidance (APA) task, and brain lesion size at a chronic stage after controlled cortical impact injury in C5-sufficient (C5+/+) and C5-deficient (C5?/?) CD1 mice. In post-TBI C5+/+ mice, rotarod performance was improved by CR2-Crry, APA performance was improved by CR2-Crry and PMX205, and brain lesion size was reduced by PMX205. After TBI, C5?/? mice performed better in the APA task compared with C5+/+ mice. C5 deficiency enhanced the effect of C1-Inh on motor function and brain damage and the effect of CR2-Crry on brain damage after TBI. Our findings support critical roles for C3 in motor deficits, the C3/C5/C5aR1 axis in cognitive deficits, and C5aR1 signaling in brain damage after TBI. Findings suggest the combination of C5 inhibition with C1-Inh and CR2-Crry as potential therapeutic strategies in TBI.

Abstract Background Photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) may influence imaging characteristics for various clinical conditions due to higher signal and contrast-to-noise ratio in virtual monoenergetic images (VMI). Radiomics analysis relies on quantification of image characteristics. We evaluated the impact of different VMI reconstructions on radiomic features in in vitro and in vivo PCD-CT datasets. Methods An organic phantom consisting of twelve samples (four oranges, four onions, and four apples) was scanned five times. Twenty-three patients who had undergone coronary computed tomography angiography on a first generation PCD-CT system with the same image acquisitions were analyzed. VMIs were reconstructed at 6 keV levels (40, 55, 70, 90, 120, and 190 keV). The phantoms and the patients’ left ventricular myocardium (LVM) were segmented for all reconstructions. Ninety-three original radiomic features were extracted. Repeatability and reproducibility were evaluated through intraclass correlations coefficient (ICC) and post hoc paired samples ANOVA t test. Results There was excellent repeatability for radiomic features in phantom scans (all ICC = 1.00). Among all VMIs, 36/93 radiomic features (38.7%) in apples, 28/93 (30.1%) in oranges, and 33/93 (35.5%) in onions were not significantly different. For LVM, the percentage of stable features was high between VMIs ≥ 90 keV (90 versus 120 keV, 77.4%; 90 versus 190 keV, 83.9%; 120 versus 190 keV, 89.3%), while comparison to lower VMI levels led to fewer reproducible features (40 versus 55 keV, 8.6%). Conclusions VMI levels influence the stability of radiomic features in an organic phantom and patients’ LVM; stability decreases considerably below 90 keV. Relevance statement Spectral reconstructions significantly influence radiomic features in vitro and in vivo, necessitating standardization and careful attention to these reconstruction parameters before clinical implementation. Key points • Radiomic features have an excellent repeatability within the same PCD-CT acquisition and reconstruction. • Differences in VMI lead to decreased reproducibility for radiomic features. • VMI ≥ 90 keV increased the reproducibility of the radiomic features. This study was undertaken to address how near-surface soil water content (SWC) patterns have varied across diverse agroecological regions (AERs) of mainland India from 1979 to 2022 (44 years) and how these variations relate to environmental factors. Grid-wise trend analysis using the Mann–Kendall (MK) trend test and Sen’s slope was conducted to determine the trends and their magnitudes. Additionally, we used Spearman’s rank correlation (ρ) to explore the relationships of ESA CCI’s near-surface SWC data with key environmental variables, including rainfall, temperature, actual evapotranspiration, and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The results revealed significant variations in SWC patterns and trends across different AERs and months. The MK trend test indicated that 17.96% of the area exhibited a significantly increasing trend (p < 0.1), while7.6% showed a significantly decreasing trend, with an average annual Sen’s slope of 0.9 × 10−4 m3 m−3 year−1 for mainland India. Areas with the highest decreasing trends were AER-16 (warm per-humid with brown and red hill soils), AER-15 (hot subhumid to humid with alluvium-derived soils), and AER-17 (warm per-humid with red and lateritic soils). In contrast, increasing trends were the most prominent in AER-5 (hot semi-arid with medium and deep black soils), AER-6 (hot semi-arid with shallow and medium black soils), and AER-19 (hot humid per-humid with red, lateritic, and alluvium-derived soils). Significant increasing trends were more prevalent during monsoon and post-monsoon months while decreasing trends were noted in pre-monsoon months. Correlation analysis showed strong positive correlations of SWC with rainfall (ρ = 0.70), actual evapotranspiration (ρ = 0.74), and NDVI (ρ = 0.65), but weak or negative correlations with temperature (ρ = 0.12). This study provides valuable insights for policymakers to delineate areas based on soil moisture availability patterns across seasons, aiding in agricultural and water resource planning under changing climatic conditions.

Rationale: Evaluating the long-term safety and efficacy of peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) in patients with metastatic neuroendocrine tumors (mNETs) who have undergone prior bland hepatic transarterial embolization (TAE). Methods: Retrospective review of mNET patients who received PRRT with 177Lu-DOTATATE between 4/2018 and 02/2022 with and without prior TAE. The most recent clinical, imaging, and laboratory findings, including hepatic Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v5.0, were compared to pre-PRRT. Results: 171 patients (95 M, 76 F, median age = 66) with mNET of different primary sites (9 foregut, 100 midgut, 9 hindgut, 44 pancreas, 9 unknown) received at least 1 cycle of PRRT with at least 6 months of follow-up, 110 of whom were embolization-naïve and 61 who had prior TAE. The median follow up was 22 months (range: 6–43). Patients with prior TAE had higher liver tumor burden on average than patients without prior TAE; however, the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.06). There was no significant difference in the rates of G3 or G4 hepatotoxicity (p = 0.548 and p = 0.999, respectively) in patients who underwent prior TAE and those who were TAE-naïve. The hepatic progression-free survival was 22.9 months in TAE-naïve patients and 25.7, 20.2, and 12.8 months in patients with 1, 2, and 3 prior TAE treatments, respectively. Conclusion: Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy following transarterial bland embolization for mNET is safe and effective.

The rapid advancement of machine learning techniques has led to their widespread application in various domains, including water resources. However, snowmelt modeling remains an area that has not been extensively explored. In this study, we propose a state-of-the-art (SOTA) deep learning sequential model, leveraging a Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN), for snowmelt forecasting of the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. To evaluate the performance of our proposed model, we conducted a comparative analysis with other popular models, including Support Vector Regression (SVR), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Transformer models. Furthermore, nested cross-validation (CV) was used with five outer folds and three inner folds, and hyperparameter tuning was performed on the inner folds. To evaluate the performance of the model, the Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE), R square (R2), Kling–Gupta Efficiency (KGE), and Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) were computed for each outer fold. The average metrics revealed that the TCN outperformed the other models, with an average MAE of 0.011, RMSE of 0.023, R2 of 0.991, KGE of 0.992, and NSE of 0.991 for one-day forecasts of streamflow. The findings of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed deep learning model as compared to traditional machine learning approaches for snowmelt-driven streamflow forecasting. Moreover, the superior performance of this TCN highlights its potential as a promising deep learning model for similar hydrological applications.

Cancer is a highly heterogeneous disease and remains a global health challenge affecting millions of human lives worldwide. Despite advancements in conventional treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, the rise of multidrug resistance, tumor recurrence, and their severe side effects and the complex nature of the tumor microenvironment (TME) necessitates innovative therapeutic approaches. Recently, stimulus-responsive nanomedicines designed to target TME characteristics (e.g., pH alterations, redox conditions, enzyme secretion) have gained attention for their potential to enhance anticancer efficacy while minimizing the adverse effects of chemotherapeutics/bioactive compounds. Among the various nanocarriers, hydrogels are intriguing due to their high-water content, adjustable mechanical characteristics, and responsiveness to external and internal stimuli, making them promising candidates for cancer therapy. These properties make hydrogels an ideal nanocarrier for controlled drug release within the TME. This review comprehensively surveys the latest advancements in the area of stimulus-responsive hydrogels for cancer therapy, exploring various stimuli-responsive mechanisms, including biological (e.g., pH, redox), chemical (e.g., enzymes, glucose), and physical (e.g., temperature, light), as well as dual- or multi-stimuli responsiveness. Furthermore, this review addresses the current developments and challenges in hydrogels in cancer treatment. Our aim is to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of stimulus-responsive hydrogels for cancer treatment, offering novel perspectives on their development for cancer therapy and other medical applications.
