The effect of thermal surface cleaning on the Gilbert damping, $\alpha$, of yttrium iron garnet (YIG), before capping with a metallic layer, has been investigated. Our results show that $\alpha$ is strongly effected by relatively mild annealing conditions (T = 300 C) when performed in a vacuum. This increase needs to be taken into account when obtaining the spin mixing conductance from spin pumping measurements. We measure an increase in $\alpha$ by a factor of 8 when the YIG is vacuum annealed at 300 C. No such changes in $\alpha$ are observed when annealed at the same temperature in 0.1 mbar of oxygen., Comment: 5 page, 4 figures

Nanoscale detection and control of the magnetic order underpins a broad spectrum of fundamental research and practical device applications. The key principle involved is the breaking of time-reversal ($\cal{T}$) symmetry, which in ferromagnets is generated by an internal magnetization. However, the presence of a net-magnetization also imposes severe limitations on compatibility with other prominent phases ranging from superconductors to topological insulators, as well as on spintronic device scalability. Recently, altermagnetism has been proposed as a solution to this restriction, since it shares the enabling $\cal{T}$-symmetry breaking characteristic of ferromagnetism, combined with the antiferromagnetic-like vanishing net-magnetization. To date, altermagnetic ordering has been inferred from spatially averaged probes. Here, we demonstrate nanoscale imaging and control of altermagnetic ordering ranging from nanoscale vortices to domain walls to microscale single-domain states in MnTe. We combine the $\cal{T}$-symmetry breaking sensitivity of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism with magnetic linear dichroism and photoemission electron microscopy, to achieve detailed imaging of the local altermagnetic ordering vector. A rich variety of spin configurations can be imposed using microstructure patterning or thermal cycling in magnetic fields. The demonstrated detection and control of altermagnetism paves the way for future research ranging from ultra-scalable digital and neuromorphic spintronic devices, to the interplay of altermagnetism with non-dissipative superconducting or topological phases., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Considering the growing interest in magnetic materials for unconventional computing, data storage, and sensor applications, there is active research not only on material synthesis but also characterisation of their properties. In addition to structural and integral magnetic characterisations, imaging of magnetization patterns, current distributions and magnetic fields at nano- and microscale is of major importance to understand the material responses and qualify them for specific applications. In this roadmap, we aim to cover a broad portfolio of techniques to perform nano- and microscale magnetic imaging using SQUIDs, spin center and Hall effect magnetometries, scanning probe microscopies, x-ray- and electron-based methods as well as magnetooptics and nanoMRI. The roadmap is aimed as a single access point of information for experts in the field as well as the young generation of students outlining prospects of the development of magnetic imaging technologies for the upcoming decade with a focus on physics, materials science, and chemistry of planar, 3D and geometrically curved objects of different material classes including 2D materials, complex oxides, semi-metals, multiferroics, skyrmions, antiferromagnets, frustrated magnets, magnetic molecules/nanoparticles, ionic conductors, superconductors, spintronic and spinorbitronic materials.

Here, we report on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of a polycrystalline sample of the LaCaCoIrO$_6$ double-perovskite investigated by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co and Ir $L_{2,3}$ edges, magnetometry, and electrical transport. Our results indicate a configuration of nearly Co$^{2+}$/Ir$^{5+}$ configuration for the transition-metal ions, with spin canting within the Co antiferromagnetic superstructure responsible for the ferromagnetic-like behavior observed below 100 K. The highly insulating character of LaCaCoIrO$_6$ and its positive magnetoresistance further suggest that this antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction occurs through an indirect hybridization between the Co $e_g$ orbitals, Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) have been used to study transition metal impurities on K and Na films. The multiplet structure of the XAS spectra indicates that Fe, Co, and Ni have localized atomic ground states with predominantly d7, d8, and d9 character, respectively. XMCD shows that the localized impurity states possess large, atomiclike, magnetic orbital moments that are progressively quenched as clusters are formed. Ni impurities on Na films are found to be nonmagnetic, with a strongly increased d10 character of the impurity state. The results show that the high magnetic moments of transition metals in alkali hosts originate from electron localization.

Here we present a detailed investigation of the Co and Ir local electronic structures in La1.5A0.5CoIrO6 (A = Ba, Ca) compounds in order to unravel the orbital hybridization mechanism in these CoIr-based double perovskites. Our results of x-ray powder diffraction, ac and dc magnetization, Co and Ir L2,3-edges and Co K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism suggest a competition between magnetic interactions. A dominant antiferromagnetic coupling is found to be responsible for the ferrimagnetic behavior observed for A = Ca below approximately 96 K, the competing magnetic phases and the cationic disorder in this compound giving rise to a spin-glass state at low temperatures. For the A = Ba, on the other hand, there is no evidence of long range order down to its spin-glass transition temperature. The remarkably different magnetic properties observed between these two compounds is discussed in terms of the structural distortion that alters the strength of the Co - Ir couplings, with a relevant role played by the Co 3d eg - Ir 5d j = 1/2 hybridization., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Altermagnetism is a recently identified magnetic symmetry class combining characteristics of conventional collinear ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, that were regarded as mutually exclusive, and enabling phenomena and functionalities unparalleled in either of the two traditional elementary magnetic classes. In this work we use symmetry and ab initio theory to explore X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in the altermagnetic class. Our results highlight the distinct phenomenology in altermagnets of this time-reversal symmetry breaking response, and its potential utility for element-specific spectroscopy and microscopy in altermagnets. As a representative material for our XMCD study we choose $\alpha$-MnTe with the compensated antiparallel magnetic order in which an anomalous Hall effect has been already demonstrated both in theory and experiment. Topologically protected magnetic textures, such as skyrmions, half-skyrmions (merons) and their antiparticles, constitute tiny whirls in the magnetic order. They are promising candidates for information carriers in next-generation memory devices, as they can be efficiently propelled at very high velocities using current-induced spin torques. Antiferromagnets have been shown to host versions of these textures, which have gained significant attention because of their potential for terahertz dynamics, deflection free motion, and improved size scaling due to the absence of stray field. Here we show that topological spin textures, merons and antimerons, can be generated at room temperature and reversibly moved using electrical pulses in thin film CuMnAs, a semimetallic antiferromagnet that is a testbed system for spintronic applications. The electrical generation and manipulation of antiferromagnetic merons is a crucial step towards realizing the full potential of antiferromagnetic thin films as active components in high density, high speed magnetic memory devices., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

In antiferromagnetic spintronics, the read-out of the staggered magnetization or Neel vector is the key obstacle to harnessing the ultra-fast dynamics and stability of antiferromagnets for novel devices. Here, we demonstrate strong exchange coupling of Mn2Au, a unique metallic antiferromagnet that exhibits Neel spin-orbit torques, with thin ferromagnetic Permalloy layers. This allows us to benefit from the well-estabished read-out methods of ferromagnets, while the essential advantages of antiferromagnetic spintronics are retained. We show one-to-one imprinting of the antiferromagnetic on the ferromagnetic domain pattern. Conversely, alignment of the Permalloy magnetization reorients the Mn2Au Neel vector, an effect, which can be restricted to large magnetic fields by tuning the ferromagnetic layer thickness. To understand the origin of the strong coupling, we carry out high resolution electron microscopy imaging and we find that our growth yields an interface with a well-defined morphology that leads to the strong exchange coupling., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We use resonant soft X-ray diffraction to track the photo-induced dynamics of the antiferromagnetic structure in a NdNiO$_{3}$ thin film. Femtosecond laser pulses with a photon energy of 0.61 eV, resonant with electron transfer between long-bond and short-bond nickel sites, are used to excite the material and drive an ultrafast insulator-metal transition. Polarization sensitive soft X-ray diffraction, resonant to the nickel L$_{3}$-edge, then probes the evolution of the underlying magnetic spiral as a function of time delay with 80 picosecond time resolution. By modelling the azimuthal dependence of the scattered intensity for different linear X-ray polarizations, we benchmark the changes of the local magnetic moments and the spin alignment. The measured changes are consistent with a reduction of the long-bond site magnetic moments and an alignment of the spins towards a more collinear structure at early time delays.

Recent research works have shown that the magnetic order in some antiferromagnetic materials can be manipulated and detected electrically, due to two physical mechanisms: Neel-order spin-orbit torques and anisotropic magnetoresistance. While these observations open up opportunities to use antiferromagnets for magnetic memory devices, different physical characterization methods are required for a better understanding of those mechanisms. Here we report a magnetic field induced rotation of the antiferromagnetic Neel vector in epitaxial tetragonal CuMnAs thin films. Using soft x-ray magnetic linear dichroism spectroscopy, x-ray photoemission electron microscopy, integral magnetometry and magneto-transport methods, we demonstrate spin-flop switching and continuous spin reorientation in antiferromagnetic films with uniaxial and biaxial magnetic anisotropies, respectively. From field-dependent measurements of the magnetization and magnetoresistance, we obtain key material parameters including the anisotropic magnetoresistance coefficients, magnetocrystalline anisotropy, spin-flop and exchange fields., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures

Ultra-fast dynamics, insensitivity to external magnetic fields, or absence of magnetic stray fields are examples of properties that make antiferromagnets of potential use in the development of spintronic devices. Similar to their ferromagnetic counterparts, antiferromagnets can store information in the orientations of the collective magnetic order vector. However, also in analogy to ferromagnets, the readout magnetoresistivity signals in simple antiferromagnetic films have been weak and the extension of the electrical reorientation mechanism to optics has not been achieved. Here we report reversible and reproducible quenching of an antiferromagnetic CuMnAs film by either electrical or ultrashort optical pulses into nano-fragmented domain states. The resulting resistivity changes approach 20\% at room temperature, which is comparable to the giant magnetoresistance ratios in ferromagnetic multilayers. We also obtain a signal readout by optical reflectivity. The analog time-dependent switching and relaxation characteristics of our devices can mimic functionality of spiking neural network components.

The antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition in B2-ordered FeRh is imaged in laterally confined nanopatterned islands using photoemission electron microscopy with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism contrast. The resulting magnetic images directly detail the progression in the shape and size of the FM phase domains during heating and cooling through the transition. In 5 um square islands this domain development during heating is shown to proceed in three distinct modes: nucleation, growth, and merging, each with subsequently greater energy costs. In 0.5 um islands, which are smaller than the typical final domain size, the growth mode is stunted and the transition temperature was found to be reduced by 20 K. The modification to the transition temperature is found by high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy to be due to a 100 nm chemically disordered edge grain present as a result of ion implantation damage during the patterning. FeRh has unique possibilities for magnetic memory applications; the inevitable changes to its magnetic properties due to subtractive nanofabrication will need to be addressed in future work in order to progress from sheet films to suitable patterned devices.

Antiferromagnets have a number of favourable properties as active elements in spintronic devices, including ultra-fast dynamics, zero stray fields and insensitivity to external magnetic fields . Tetragonal CuMnAs is a testbed system in which the antiferromagnetic order parameter can be switched reversibly at ambient conditions using electrical currents . In previous experiments, orthogonal in-plane current pulses were used to induce 90 degree rotations of antiferromagnetic domains and demonstrate the operation of all-electrical memory bits in a multi-terminal geometry . Here, we demonstrate that antiferromagnetic domain walls can be manipulated to realize stable and reproducible domain changes using only two electrical contacts. This is achieved by using the polarity of the current to switch the sign of the current-induced effective field acting on the antiferromagnetic sublattices. The resulting reversible domain and domain wall reconfigurations are imaged using x-ray magnetic linear dichroism microscopy, and can also be detected electrically. The switching by domain wall motion can occur at much lower current densities than those needed for coherent domain switching., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Using x-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism techniques, we demonstrate a collinear exchange coupling between an epitaxial antiferromagnet, tetragonal CuMnAs, and an Fe surface layer. A small uncompensated Mn magnetic moment is observed which is antiparallel to the Fe magnetization. The staggered magnetization of the 5nm thick CuMnAs layer is rotatable under small magnetic fields, due to the interlayer exchange coupling. This allows us to obtain the x-ray magnetic linear dichroism spectra for different crystalline orientations of CuMnAs in the (001) plane., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Resonant optical excitation of apical oxygen vibrational modes in the normal state of underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x induces a transient state with optical properties similar to those of the equilibrium superconducting state. Amongst these, a divergent imaginary conductivity and a plasma edge are transiently observed in the photo-stimulated state. Femtosecond hard x-ray diffraction experiments have been used in the past to identify the transient crystal structure in this non-equilibrium state. Here, we start from these crystallographic features and theoretically predict the corresponding electronic rearrangements that accompany these structural deformations. Using density functional theory, we predict enhanced hole-doping of the CuO2 planes. The empty chain Cu dy2-z2 orbital is calculated to strongly reduce in energy, which would increase c-axis transport and potentially enhance the interlayer Josephson coupling as observed in the THz-frequency response. From these calculations, we predict changes in the soft x-ray absorption spectra at the Cu L-edge. Femtosecond x-ray pulses from a free electron laser are used to probe these changes in absorption at two photon energies along this spectrum, and provide data consistent with these predictions., Comment: 20 pages with 6 figures

Selective optical excitation of a substrate lattice can drive phase changes across hetero-interfaces. This phenomenon is a non-equilibrium analogue of static strain control in heterostructures and may lead to new applications in optically controlled phase change devices. Here, we make use of time-resolved non-resonant and resonant x-ray diffraction to clarify the underlying physics, and to separate different microscopic degrees of freedom in space and time. We measure the dynamics of the lattice and that of the charge disproportionation in NdNiO3, when an insulator-metal transition is driven by coherent lattice distortions in the LaAlO3 substrate. We find that charge redistribution propagates at supersonic speeds from the interface into the NdNiO3 film, followed by a sonic lattice wave. When combined with measurements of magnetic disordering and of the metal-insulator transition, these results establish a hierarchy of events for ultrafast control at complex oxide hetero-interfaces., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Recent breakthroughs in electrical detection and manipulation of antiferromagnets have opened a new avenue in the research of non-volatile spintronic devices. Antiparallel spin sublattices in antiferromagnets, producing zero dipolar fields, lead to the insensitivity to magnetic field perturbations, multi-level stability, ultra-fast spin dynamics and other favorable characteristics which may find utility in fields ranging from magnetic memories to optical signal processing. However, the absence of a net magnetic moment and the ultra-short magnetization dynamics timescales make antiferromagnets notoriously difficult to study by common magnetometers or magnetic resonance techniques. In this paper we demonstrate the experimental determination of the Neel vector in a thin film of antiferromagnetic CuMnAs which is the prominent material used in the first realization of antiferromagnetic memory chips. We employ a femtosecond pump-probe magneto-optical experiment based on magnetic linear dichroism. This table-top optical method is considerably more accessible than the traditionally employed large scale facility techniques like neutron diffraction and X-ray magnetic dichroism measurements. This optical technique allows an unambiguous direct determination of the Neel vector orientation in thin antiferromagnetic films utilized in devices directly from measured data without fitting to a theoretical model., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The magnetic order in antiferromagnetic (AF) materials is hard to control with external magnetic fields. However, recent advances in detecting and manipulating AF order electrically have opened up new prospects for these materials in basic and applied spintronics research. Using x-ray magnetic linear dichroism microscopy, we show here that staggered effective fields generated by electrical current can induce reproducible and reversible modification of the antiferromagnetic domain structure in microdevices fabricated from a tetragonal CuMnAs thin film. The current-induced domain switching is inhomogeneous at the submicron level. We show that disruption of charge-density-wave (stripe) order by charge transfer excitation, enhances the superconducting phase rigidity in La_{1.885}Ba_{0.115}CuO_4 (LBCO). Time-Resolved Resonant Soft X-Ray Diffraction demonstrates that charge order melting is prompt following near-infrared photoexcitation whereas the crystal structure remains intact for moderate fluences. THz time-domain spectroscopy reveals that, for the first 2 ps following photoexcitation, a new Josephson Plasma Resonance edge, at higher frequency with respect to the equilibrium edge, is induced indicating enhanced superconducting interlayer coupling. The fluence dependence of the charge-order melting and the enhanced superconducting interlayer coupling are correlated with a saturation limit of about 0.5 mJ/cm2. Using a combination of x-ray and optical spectroscopies we establish a hierarchy of timescales between enhanced superconductivity, melting of charge order and rearrangement of the crystal structure., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The physical properties of epitaxial films can fundamentally differ from those of bulk single crystals even above the critical thickness. By a combination of non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, neutron diffraction and vector-mapped x-ray magnetic linear dichroism photoemission electron microscopy, we show that epitaxial (111)-BiFeO3 films support sub-micron antiferromagnetic domains, which are magneto-elastically coupled to a coherent crystallographic monoclinic twin structure. This unique texture, which is absent in bulk single crystals, should enable control of magnetism in BiFeO3 film devices via epitaxial strain., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Static strain in complex oxide heterostructures has been extensively used to engineer electronic and magnetic properties at equilibrium. In the same spirit, deformations of the crystal lattice with light may be used to achieve functional control across hetero-interfaces dynamically. Here, by exciting large amplitude infrared-active vibrations in a LaAlO3 substrate we induce magnetic order melting in a NdNiO3 film across a hetero-interface. Femtosecond Resonant Soft X-ray Diffraction is used to determine the spatial and temporal evolution of the magnetic disordering. We observe a magnetic melt front that grows from the substrate interface into the film, at a speed that suggests electronically driven propagation. Light control and ultrafast phase front propagation at hetero-interfaces may lead to new opportunities in optomagnetism, for example by driving domain wall motion to transport information across suitably designed devices., Comment: 35 pages, 8 Figures (both incl. We use femtosecond resonant soft x-ray diffraction to measure the optically stimulated ultrafast changes of charge density wave correlations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6. We find that when coherent interlayer transport is enhanced by optical excitation of the apical oxygen distortions, at least 50% of the in-plane charge density wave order is melted. These results indicate that charge ordering and superconductivity may be competing up to the charge ordering transition temperature, with the latter becoming a hidden phase that is accessible only by nonlinear phonon excitation., Comment: 22 pages (including Supplement), 3 figures

The prospective of optically inducing a spin polarized current for spintronic devices has generated a vast interest in the out-of-equilibrium electronic and spin structure of topological insulators (TIs). In this Letter we prove that only by measuring the spin intensity signal over several order of magnitude in spin, time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (STAR-PES) experiments is it possible to comprehensively describe the optically excited electronic states in TIs materials. The experiments performed on $\mathrm{Bi_{2}Se_{3}}$ reveal the existence of a Surface-Resonance-State in the 2nd bulk band gap interpreted on the basis of fully relativistic ab-initio spin resolved photoemission calculations. Remarkably, the spin dependent relaxation of the hot carriers is well reproduced by a spin dynamics model considering two non-interacting electronic systems, derived from the excited surface and bulk states, with different electronic temperatures., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures

We report current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) in Ta\Co20Fe60B20\MgO nanowires. Domain walls are observed to move against the electron flow when no magnetic field is applied, while a field along the nanowires strongly affects the domain wall motion direction and velocity. A symmetric effect is observed for up-down and down-up domain walls. This indicates the presence of right-handed domain walls, due to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) with a DMI coefficient D=+0.06 mJ/m2. The positive DMI coefficient is interpreted to be a consequence of boron diffusion into the tantalum buffer layer during annealing. In a Pt\Co68Fe22B10\MgO nanowire CIDWM along the electron flow was observed, corroborating this interpretation. The experimental results are compared to 1D-model simulations including the effects of pinning. This advanced modelling allows us to reproduce the experiment outcomes and reliably extract a spin-Hall angle {\theta}SH=-0.11 for Ta in the nanowires, showing the importance of an analysis that goes beyond the currently used model for perfect nanowires., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures

Using X-ray photoelectron emission microscopy we have observed the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases in a (3 at.%)Pd-doped FeRh epilayer. By quantitatively analyzing the resultant images we observe that as the epilayer transforms there is a change in magnetic domain symmetry from predominantly twofold at lower temperatures through to an equally weighted combination of both four and twofold symmetries at higher temperature. It is postulated that the lowered symmetry Ising-like nematic phase resides at the near-surface of the epilayer. This behavior is different to that of undoped FeRh suggesting that the variation in symmetry is driven by the competing structural and electronic interactions in the nanoscale FeRh film coupled with the effect of the chemical doping disorder., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

We report femtosecond resonant soft X-ray diffraction measurements of the dynamics of the charge order and of the crystal lattice in non-superconducting, stripe-ordered La1.875Ba0.125CuO4. Excitation of the in-plane Cu-O stretching phonon with a mid-infrared pulse has been previously shown to induce a transient superconducting state in the closely related compound La1.675Eu0.2Sr0.125CuO4. In La1.875Ba0.125CuO4, we find that the charge stripe order melts promptly on a sub-picosecond time scale. Surprisingly, the low temperature tetragonal distortion is only weakly reduced, reacting on significantly longer time scales that do not correlate with light-induced superconductivity. This experiment suggests that charge modulations alone, and not the LTT distortion, prevent superconductivity in equilibrium., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

We show that superconducting interlayer coupling, which coexists with and is depressed by stripe order in La1.885Ba0.115CuO4, can be enhanced by excitation with near-infrared laser pulses. For temperatures lower than Tc = 13 K, we observe a blue-shift of the equilibrium Josephson plasma resonance, detected by terahertz-frequency reflectivity measurements. Key to this measurement is the ability to probe the optical properties at frequencies as low as 150 GHz, detecting the weak interlayer coupling strengths. For T > Tc a similar plasma resonance, absent at equilibrium, is induced up to the spin-ordering temperature TSO = 40 K. These effects are reminiscent but qualitatively different from the light-induced superconductivity observed by resonant phonon excitation in La1.675Eu0.2Sr0.125CuO6.5. Importantly, enhancement of the below-Tc interlayer coupling and its appearance above Tc are preferentially achieved when the near-infrared pump light is polarized perpendicular to the superconducting planes, likely due to more effective melting of stripe order and the less effective excitation of quasiparticles from the Cooper pair condensate when compared to in-plane excitation., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

The electronic and magnetic properties of Mn coordinated to 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) in the Mn-TCNB 2D metal-ligand networks have been investigated by combining scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) performed at low temperature (3 K). When formed on Au(111) and Ag(111) substrates the Mn-TCNB networks display similar geometric structures. Magnetization curves reveal ferromagnetic (FM) coupling of the Mn sites with similar single-ion anisotropy energies, but different coupling constants. Low-temperature XMCD spectra show that the local environment of the Mn centers differs appreciably for the two substrates. Multiplet structure calculations were used to derive the corresponding ligand field parameters confirming an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. The hexaferrites are known to exhibit a wide range of magnetic structures, some of which are connected to important technological applications and display magnetoelectric properties. We present data on the low field magnetic structures stabilised in a Y-type hexaferrite as observed by resonant soft X-ray diffraction. The helical spin block arrangement that is present in zero applied magnetic field becomes fan-like as a field is applied in plane. The propagation vectors associated with each fan structure are studied as a function of field, and a new magnetic phase is reported. Large thermal changes driven by a magnetic field have been proposed for environmentally friendly energy efficient refrigeration, but only a few materials which suffer hysteresis show these giant magnetocaloric effects. Here we create giant and reversible extrinsic magnetocaloric effects in epitaxial films of the ferromagnetic manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 using strain mediated feedback from BaTiO3 substrates near a first-order structural phase transition. We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) in the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) to measure the time- and momentum-dependent electronic structure of photo-excited K0.3MoO3. Prompt depletion of the Charge Density Wave (CDW) condensate launches coherent oscillations of the amplitude mode, observed as a 1.7-THz-frequency modulation of the bonding band position. In contrast, the anti-bonding band oscillates at about half this frequency. Optical control of magnetism, of interest for high-speed data processing and storage, has only been demonstrated with near-infrared excitation to date. However, in absorbing materials, such high photon energies can lead to significant dissipation, making switch back times long and miniaturization challenging. In manganites, magnetism is directly coupled to the lattice, as evidenced by the response to external and chemical pressure, or to ferroelectric polarization. Here, femtosecond mid-infrared pulses are used to excite the lattice in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 and the dynamics of electronic order are measured by femtosecond resonant soft x-ray scattering with an x-ray free electron laser. We observe that magnetic and orbital orders are reduced by excitation of the lattice. This process, which occurs within few picoseconds, is interpreted as relaxation of the complex charge-orbital-spin structure following a displacive exchange quench - a prompt shift in the equilibrium value of the magnetic and orbital order parameters after the lattice has been distorted. A microscopic picture of the underlying unidirectional lattice displacement is proposed, based on nonlinear rectification of the directly-excited vibrational field, as analyzed in the specific lattice symmetry of La0.5Sr1.5MnO4. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Er M4,5 edge is used to study the switching behavior of the hard ErFe2 layers in an epitaxial [ErFe2(70{\AA})/YFe2 (150{\AA})]{\times}25 exchange-spring superlattice. Magnetic hysteresis loops for the Er magnetization, at temperatures T < 200 K, reveal a switching behavior with a single type of irreversible switch corresponding to vertical exchange spring states. Experiments at T > 200 K reveal a crossover to a regime with two types of switching processes. Computational modelling for this system gives a semi-quantitative agreement with the experiment and reveals that the observed high temperature switching behavior is due to a spin-flop like reorientation transition. In contrast to conventional spin-flop transitions in antiferromagnets, in this exchange spring system the increase in anisotropy energy of the hard magnetic layers is overcome by the decrease in Zeeman energy of the soft layers. Photo-excitation in complex oxides1 transfers charge across semicovalent bonds, drastically perturbing spin and orbital orders2. Light may then be used in compounds like magnetoresistive manganites to control magnetism on nanometre lengthscales and ultrafast timescales. Here, we show how ultrafast resonant soft x-ray diffraction can separately probe the photo-induced dynamics of spin and orbital orders in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4. Ultrafast melting of CE antiferromagnetic spin order is evidenced by the disappearance of a (1/4,1/4,1/2) diffraction peak. On the other hand the (1/4,1/4,0) peak, reflecting orbital order, is only partially reduced. Cluster calculations aid our interpretation by considering different magnetically ordered states accessible after photo-excitation. We report the design and construction of a novel soft x-ray diffractometer installed at Diamond Light Source. The beamline endstation RASOR is constructed for general users and designed primarily for the study of single crystal diffraction and thin film reflectivity. The instrument is comprised of a limited three circle ({\theta}, 2{\theta}, {\chi}) diffractometer with an additional removable rotation ({\phi}) stage. It is equipped with a liquid helium cryostat, and post-scatter polarization analysis. Motorised motions are provided for the precise positioning of the sample onto the diffractometer centre of rotation, and for positioning the centre of rotation onto the x-ray beam. The functions of the instrument have been tested at Diamond Light Source, and initial test measurements are provided, demonstrating the potential of the instrument., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We demonstrate an exchange bias in (Ga,Mn)As induced by antiferromagnetic coupling to a thin overlayer of Fe. Bias fields of up to 240 Oe are observed. Using element-specific x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, we distinguish a strongly exchange coupled (Ga,Mn)As interface layer in addition to the biassed bulk of the (Ga,Mn)As film. We have studied the orbital ordering (OO) in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 and its soft x-ray resonant diffraction spectroscopic signature at the Mn L2, L3 edges. We have modelled the system in second quantization as a small planar cluster consisting of a central Mn atom, with the first neighbouring shells of oxygen and Mn atoms. For the effective Hamiltonian we consider Slater-Koster parameters, charge transfer and electron correlation energies obtained from previous measurements on manganites. We calculate the OO as a function of oxygen distortion and spin correlation used as adjustable parameters. Their contribution as a function of temperature is clearly distinguished with a good spectroscopic agreement., Comment: 5 pages 3 figures
