Abstract Aims Heart failure (HF) is a growing health problem, yet there are limited data on patients with HF in Malaysia. The Malaysian Heart Failure (MY‐HF) Registry aims to gain insights into the epidemiology, aetiology, management, and outcome of Malaysian patients with HF and identify areas for improvement within the national HF services. Methods and results The MY‐HF Registry is a 3‐year prospective, observational study comprising 2717 Malaysian patients admitted for acute HF. We report the description of baseline data at admission and outcomes of index hospitalization of these patients. The mean age was 60.2 ± 13.6 years, 66.8% were male, and 34.3% had de novo HF. Collectively, 55.7% of patients presented with New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class III or IV; ischaemic heart disease was the most frequent aetiology (63.2%). Most admissions (87.3%) occurred via the emergency department, with 13.7% of patients requiring intensive care, and of these, 21.8% needed intubation. The proportion of patients receiving guideline‐directed medical therapy increased at discharge (84.2% vs. 93.6%). The median length of stay (LOS) was 5 days, and in‐hospital mortality was 2.9%. Predictors of LOS and/or in‐hospital mortality were age, NYHA class, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and comorbid anaemia. LOS and in‐hospital mortality were similar regardless of ejection fraction. Conclusions The MY‐HF Registry showed that the HF population in Malaysia is younger, predominantly male, and ischaemic‐driven and has good prospects with hospitalization for optimization of treatment. These findings suggest a need to reassess current clinical practice and guide resource allocation to improve patient outcomes.

Crop yield is largely influenced by the seedling quality and establishment. Seedling density is an important factor that plays a vital role in producing quality seedlings. Seedling growth characteristics of cabbage cv. kf-65 was evaluated at four inter row and intra row spacing: 0.5cm×1.0cm, 1.0cm×1.0cm, 1.5cm×1.5cm, and 2.0cm×2.0cm in the field of Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, Lamjung Campus during September-October, 2018. Seed germination was 96% under a partially controlled germinator in the lab whereas mean germination in the field was found to be 62%. Treatments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with five replications. Data was collected after 23 days using the destructive sampling method. Plant height, leaf number, leaf area, fresh shoot and root weight and % dry matter was recorded from five samples from each replication of every treatment. Plant population had a significant effect on plant leaf area, fresh shoot and root weight and % dry weight. The 2.0cm×2.0cm spacing had significantly higher leaf area (25.3cm2), fresh shoot (1.33g) and root weight (0.06g). Dry weight % (23%) was significantly higher for 1.5cm×1.5cm spacing. The result indicates that wider spacing (≥ 2cm) was found to be favourable to obtaining robust and quality seedlings.

In recent years, smart consumers along with Distributed Generation (DGs) (Photovoltaic (PV) and wind) and Electric Vehicles (EV) are considered as prosumers. The prosumers trade the available excess power to the consumers for minimizing their electricity cost. Each appliance in the smart home can be scheduled by using Demand Response (DR) implementation based on the Real-Time Pricing (RTP). The implementation of peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading in the smart home further minimizes the electricity cost of the consumer due to the energy trading from prosumers instead of the grid. This article deals with the impact of DR-based P2P energy trading among prosumers and consumers. In this work, two stages of scheduling are proposed to minimize the electricity cost of the consumers. The first stage represents the scheduling of each appliance in a smart home based on the RTP using the Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO) algorithm. The second stage represents the P2P energy trading among prosumers and consumers based on the DR implementation. The simulation results are proved that the reduction in electricity cost is achieved by implementing energy trading in the smart home. Also, the burden on the utility during the peak hour is reduced by implementing DR-based P2P energy trading.

Electronic waste is an indirect and unimaginable waste which make adverse effects on the human, animals and environment by polluting the natural resources like air, soil and water. Accumulation and contamination of e-waste for a longer period may harshly affect the environmental resources. India and China are the largest consumers of electronic gadgets at the same time they are responsible for an increase in the waste electrical and electronic equipment. Therefore, this review article mainly focuses on the detailed explanation of the e-waste management system includes the recycling process and its effects in India. The uniqueness of this review article lies in the discussion of legal instruments and awareness programs in India at various periods of time. Also, it provides sufficient knowledge to the readers in various aspects of increasing e-waste and its controlling methods. As a result, it gives adequate information for reducing the utilization of e-product in consumer-side and control measures on the manufacturer-side. In addition to that, it will be helpful to the policymakers who are involving in framing the future policy of e-waste in India.

Ecology of biofouling on the edible estuarine oyster Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) has been investigated in the Ashtamudi Backwater of the southwest coast of India. Fouling was highly conspicuous throughout the year and dominant groups included barnacles, serpulids, bryozoans and modiolids. Intensity of fouling varied from 73 to 179 % on living oyster valves and 65 to 172 % on dead valves with respective annual averages of 118 and 127%. Substrate selection and settlement of the different groups were mostly opportunistic. Barnacles were the most dominant, living and dead ones collectively contributing to about 26 % of fouling on living valves and 32 % on dead valves. Serpulid fouling was 22 % both on living and dead oyster valves, bryozoans 15 and 12%, modiolids 11 and 12% and the miscellaneous groups formed 27 and 20 % respectively. Availability of free settling space and fouling in relation to substrate size were also investigated. Total fouling was very intense on oysters of 25-35 cm size group. The degradation of water bodies caused by organic pollutants from industrial wastewater discharge has made it necessary to develop new functional materials like hydrophobic-oleophilic materials that can efficiently remediate water. It is factual that many of the synthetic methods for creating hydrophobic-oleophilic materials involve the use of toxic or harmful reactants, such as fluorine or sulfur compounds. However, these methods often have significant drawbacks, including being hazardous to the environment, expensive, and complex to utilize. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a hydrophobic/oleophilic material that is non-toxic and eco-friendly in order to overcome the existing drawbacks. In this regard, we have proposed a modest and eco-friendly approach for constructing a hydrophobic-oleophilic Ph-POSS@HKUST-1 composite material by solution-assisted self-assembly for the conversion of hydrophilic HKUST-1 into hydrophobic HKUST-1 for separation applications. The incorporation of fluorine-free, low surface energy and hydrophobic POSS into HKUST-1 increased the hydrophobicity and oleophilicity of the system. The synthesized Ph-POSS@HKUST-1 composite material has been thoroughly characterized through FT-IR, PXRD, HR-SEM, BET, and thermogravimetric analysis. It has been observed that the material exhibits a contact angle of 137 ± 4° and shows high selectivity and absorption capacity towards organic solvents and oils from water mixtures. Concurrently, the Ph-POSS@HKUST-1@PDA@sponge has been effectively utilized for the separation of solvents and oils and it has shown more than 95% separation efficiency for up to 15 cycles. It is interesting to note that Ph-POSS@HKUST-1 and the Ph-POSS@HKUST-1@PDA@sponge have outstanding stability in abrasive chemical environments which is due to the presence of a mechanically and chemically stable inorganic-organic hybrid POSS nanocage. In addition, ab initio and DFT calculations elicit that the Ph-POSS@HKUST-1 composite is stabilized through π⋯π stacking instead of the C-H⋯π mode of interaction at the HKUST-1⋯Ph-POSS interface. Further electron density features confirm the interfacial interaction at the interface. Our latest research has led us to propose an eco-friendly and non-toxic hybrid composite material for efficiently tackling the issue of organic solvent and oil pollution in water mixtures.

Aim and Objectives: To estimate and evaluate the optimal thickness of tissue section for skin and dermal appendages intra-operatively and to compare the morphology and architecture of the epidermis and its appendages at 7 and 10 microns., Methodology: After obtaining clearance from the institutional human ethical committee, 101 skin margins were prospectively analyzed using a two-step embedding technique. After multiple trials and errors, 7- and 10-micron thicknesses were selected for the present study. Artefacts, staining characteristics, cellular morphology, cellular outline, and nuclear outline were assessed and scored as unacceptable or acceptable. The data were entered in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using SPSS software., Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the sections obtained at 7 microns and 10 microns (p-value: <0.001), the latter were better in all the parameters analyzed. However, no difference was noted in the characteristics of the dermal appendages (p-value: >0.05)., Conclusion: While mucosal margins can be obtained at the usual 5-7 microns, the same thickness is not optimal for skin margins intra-operatively. Frozen sections for the skin margins may be set at 10 microns, to save time, minimize artefacts, and for better readability.

Monilinia vaccinii - corymbosi ( Mvc ) is an important fungal pathogen of blueberry, causing mummy berry disease. While the symptoms of the advanced stages of the disease can be obvious, diagnosing its early stages can be challenging. To facilitate fast and sensitive screening of asymptomatic or latently infected plant material for Mvc , we developed a specific TaqMan real-time PCR assay targeting the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. The assay was shown to be specific to Mvc and did not cross react with any of the other tested Monilinia species or other blueberry pathogens. Using the multicopy ITS region ensured high analytical sensitivity, enabling very low concentrations of Mvc DNA (0.1 pg) to be detected both in water and host DNA matrix. Comparable results were obtained in interlaboratory testing, showing that the assay is robust, and can be effectively used in other laboratories. Assay sensitivity was also confirmed on infected plant tissue, showing that it is effective in detecting the pathogen in infected asymptomatic stem tissue, as well as infected tissue that was mixed with healthy tissue at a ratio of 1:10 by weight. The assay was duplexed with a plant internal control (cytochrome oxidase gene) for simultaneous amplification of the pathogen and plant internal control in a single reaction. This new diagnostic tool can be used for sensitive and rapid screening of blueberry plants for the presence of Mvc in many different settings, e.g., for breeding programs, research, or biosecurity diagnostics.

The genus Ceratocystis contains several significant plant pathogens, causing wilt and canker disease on a wide range of plant species. There are >40 known species of Ceratocystis , some of which are becoming increasingly important in agricultural or natural ecosystems. The diagnostic procedures for most Ceratocystis species rely on time-consuming and labor-intensive culturing approaches. To provide more time-efficient and sensitive molecular diagnostic tools for Ceratocystis , a generic TaqMan real-time PCR assay was developed using the ITS gene. This novel two-probe TaqMan assay amplified DNA from all tested Ceratocystis species. Some nonspecific amplification of a few species from closely related genera was observed under certain conditions; however, these false-positive detections could be ruled out using the additional PCR primers developed for further sequence-based identification of the detected species. The assay was found to be highly sensitive, as it detected 0.2 pg/μl of Ceratocystis DNA in water as well as in host DNA matrix. Further validation with artificially inoculated fig stem tissue demonstrated that the assay was also able to effectively detect the pathogen in infected asymptomatic stem tissue. This newly developed real-time PCR assay has practical applications in biosecurity, conservation, and agriculture; it will enable the detection of Ceratocystis species directly from plant material to facilitate more sensitive screening of imported plant germplasm, and allow rapid tracking of pathogens in the case of disease outbreaks.

The effects of the chemical environment of menaquinones (all-trans MK-4 and all-trans MK-7) incorporated in lipid monolayers on mercury electrodes have been studied with respect to the thermodynamics and kinetics of their electrochemistry. The chemical environment relates to the composition of lipid films as well as the adjacent aqueous phase. It could be shown that the addition of all-trans MK-4 to TMCL does not change the phase transition temperatures of TMCL. In case of DMPC monolayers, the presence of cholesterol has no effect on the thermodynamics (formal redox potentials) of all-trans MK-7, but the kinetics are affected. Addition of an inert electrolyte (sodium perchlorate; change of ionic strength) to the aqueous phase shifts the redox potentials of all-trans MK-7 only slightly. The formal redox potentials of all-trans MK-4 were determined in TMCL and nCL monolayers and found to be higher in nCL monolayers than in TMCL monolayers. The apparent electron transfer rate constants, transfer coefficients and activation energies of all-trans MK-4 in cardiolipins have been also determined. Most surprisingly, the apparent electron transfer rate constants of all-trans MK-4 exhibit an opposite pH dependence for TMCL and nCL films: the rate constants increase in TMCL films with increasing pH, but in nCL films they increase with decreasing pH. This study is a contribution to understand environmental effects on the redox properties of membrane bond redox systems.

The acid-base and redox properties of the menaquinones MK-4, MK-7, and MK-9 (vitamin K 2 ) have been studied in DMPC monolayers on mercury electrodes. The monolayers were prepared by adhesion-spreading of menaquinone-spiked DMPC liposomes on a stationary mercury drop electrode. All three menaquinones possess [Formula: see text] constants outside the experimentally accessible range, i.e., they are higher than about 12. The standard potentials of MK-4, MK-7, and MK-9 in the DMPC monolayers are very similar, i.e., 0.351, 0.326, and 0.330 V (corresponding to the biochemical standard potentials - 0.063, - 0.088, and - 0.085 V).

Objective: Bacterial canker is a destructive disease of kiwifruit caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa). To understand the disease-causing mechanism of Psa, a kiwifruit yeast two-hybrid cDNA library was constructed to identify putative host targets of the Psa Type Three Secreted Effector AvrPto5., Results: In this study, we used the Mate & Plate™ yeast two-hybrid library method for constructing a kiwifruit cDNA library from messenger RNA of young leaves. The constructed library consisted of 2.15 × 10 6 independent clones with an average insert size of 1.52 kb. The screening of the kiwifruit yeast two-hybrid cDNA library with Psa AvrPto5 revealed the interaction of a V-type proton ATPase subunit-H, a proline rich-protein and heavy metal-associated isoprenylated plant protein 26. Among these, heavy metal-associated isoprenylated plant protein 26 showed a positive interaction with Psa AvrPto5 as both prey and bait.

The drinking, borewell and sewage water in the Sanmugasikamani Nadar (S.N) street, Naivatti Nadar (N.N) street and Thiruthangal area of Sivakasi has been studied. The various constituents monitored include the physicochemical characters like pH, total solids, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids; chemical parameters like total alkalinity acidity free CO2, dissolved oxygen, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, chloride, salinity and bacterial parameters like standard plate count (SPC), total coliform count (TCC), faecal coliform count (FCC), faecal streptococcal count (FSC). Most of the physicochemical characters of drinking and borewell water were within the ISI permissible level. However in water samples from all the sites, bacterial count exceeded the recommended permissible level of WHO. Introduction of sewage into the drinking and borewell water was the main reason for the bacterial contamination. The boiling of water is therefore advisable before consumption. The physicochemical and bacterial characters of the sewage water were unworthy. The sewage water recycling was necessary to minimize the water born diseases.
