We find an unconventional giant negative exchange bias (EB) of $H_{\rm EB}$ = --14.1~kOe at 2~K (cooling field of 50~kOe) in the cluster spin-glass (CSG) La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.85}$Nb$_{0.15}$O$_3$ perovsikte cobaltites. The magnetic memory effect, aging measurements, and nonlineraity in specific heat capacity reveal the glassy magnetic state at low temperatures. Further, the detailed analysis of {\it ac-}magnetic susceptibility confirms the glassy state below $\sim$58~K and the obtained characteristic spin-relaxation time-scale of $\tau_0$ = 8.4$\times$10$^{-10}$~s indicates the presence of CSG. Moreover, the analysis of magnetic training effect using the classical EB relaxation model reveals that the frozen spins relax slowly as compared to the rotatable spins at the interface of antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic (AFM/FM) regions in CSG. Interestingly, the dependence of EB parameters is found to be unconventional for cooling field $>$50~kOe as the $H\rm_{EB}$ and $M\rm_{EB}$ show decreasing trend instead of expected saturation at higher fields. This unusual nature emerges due to large negative values of intrinsic interface exchange coupling ($J_i$), i.e., --10.24$\pm$0.22~meV and --12.55$\pm$0.49~meV for the measuring fields of $\pm$50~kOe and $\pm$90~kOe, respectively, whereas the number of spins in the FM cluster ($N_{\rm FM}$) are found to be small in the range of 2.4--3.1. These obtained values of $J_i $ and $N_{\rm FM}$ indicate the dominant AFM interactions and the presence of FM clusters in the AFM matrix, respectively, which correlate well with the observed unconventional behavior of giant negative exchange bias in the present sample., Comment: submitted

We investigate crystal structure and magnetic properties including spin relaxation and magnetocaloric effect in NASICON type NaFe$_2$PO$_4$(SO$_4$)$_2$ sample. The Rietveld refinement of x-ray and neutron diffraction patterns show a rhombohedral crystal structure with the R$\bar{3}$c space group. The core-level spectra confirm the desired oxidation state of constituent elements. The {\it dc}--magnetic susceptibility ($\chi$) behavior in zero field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) modes show the ordering temperature $\approx$50~K. Interestingly, the analysis of temperature dependent neutron diffraction patterns reveal an A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with the ordered moment of 3.8 $\mu_{B}$/Fe$^{3+}$ at 5~K, and a magnetostriction below $T_{\rm N}=$ 50~K. Further, the peak position in the {\it ac}--$\chi$ is found to be invariant with the excitation frequency supporting the notion of dominating AFM transition. Also, the unsaturated isothermal magnetization curve supports the AFM ordering of the moments; however, the observed coercivity suggests the presence of weak ferromagnetic (FM) correlations at 5~K. On the other hand, a clear bifurcation between ZFC and FC curves of {\it dc}--$\chi$ and the observed decrease in peak height of {\it ac}--$\chi$ with frequency suggest for the complex magnetic interactions. The spin relaxation behavior in thermo-remanent magnetization and aging measurements indicate the glassy states at 5~K. We unravel the effect of La substitution and hence antisite disorders on the exchange bias (EB) mechanism in Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0, 0.2) double perovskite samples using the detailed analysis of the field cooled magnetization isotherms (M--H) and training effect. The field dependence of the freezing temperature deviates from both Gabay-Toulouse (GT) and de Almeida-Thouless (AT) lines and the analysis suggests that the $x=$ 0 sample follows a different universality class with moderate anisotropy in the frozen spins. Interestingly, we find that the EB effect is significantly suppressed in the $x=$ 0.2 sample due to increase [decrease] in the size of ferromagnetic (FM) [cluster glass (CG)] domain, which reduces the effective disordered interface responsible for the EB. The changes in fraction of FM, AFM, and CG like interactions with the La substitution and applied magnetic field are found to be crucial in governing the EB effect in these samples. Further, the training effect measurements show the unequal shift in the left and right branches of the M--H loops and their different evolution with the field cycles ($n$). The analysis reveals that the rotatable spins relax approximately one order of magnitude faster than the frozen spins at the disordered interface. We investigate the magnetic behavior and critical exponents of quaternary CoFeV$_{0.8}$Mn$_{0.2}$Si Heusler alloy to understand the interactions across the Curie temperature ($T_{\rm C}$). The Rietveld refinement of the x-ray diffraction pattern with the space group F$\bar{4}$3m confirms a single-phase cubic Y-type crystal structure. The magnetic susceptibility $\chi (T)$ data show a ferromagnetic nature with a second-order phase transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic at $446\pm1$~K. The saturation magnetization at 5~K is determined to be 2.2~$\mu_B$/f.u., which found to be close to the Slater--Pauling rule and indicates its half-metallic nature. The values of asymptotic critical exponents ($\beta$, $\gamma$, and $\delta$) and the $T_{\rm C}$ are extracted through detailed analytical analysis including the Modified Arrott plot, the Kouvel-Fisher (K--F) method, and the Widom scaling relation. Interestingly, the estimated values of $\beta$ = 0.369 and $\gamma$ = 1.445 closely approximate the theoretical values of the 3D Heisenberg model and second-order thermodynamic phase transition across the $T_{\rm C}$. The obtained exponents lead to the collapse of renormalized isotherms, represented by the relationship between the magnetization (m) and the applied magnetic field (h), into two distinct branches above and below the $T_{\rm C}$, which validates the reliability of the analysis. Furthermore, these exponents suggest that the spin interaction follows a decay pattern of $J(r) \sim r^{-4.99}$, indicating a short-range magnetic ordering, akin to the itinerant-electron 3D Heisenberg model., Comment: submitted

We report the detailed analysis of temperature dependent neutron diffraction pattern of the Cr$_2$CoAl inverse Heusler alloy and unveil the magnetic structure up to the phase transition as well as its fully compensated ferrimagnetic nature. The Rietveld refinement of the diffraction pattern using the space group I$\bar4${\it m}2 confirm the inverse tetragonal structure over the large temperature range from 100~K to 900~K. The refinement of the magnetic phase considering the wave vector $k=$ (0, 0, 0) reveals the ferrimagnetic nature of the sample below 730$\pm$5~K. This transition temperature is obtained from empirical power law fitting of the variation in the ordered net magnetic moment and intensity of (110) peak as a function of temperature. The spin configuration of the microscopic magnetic structure suggests the nearly fully compensated ferrimagnetic behavior where the magnetic moments of Cr2 are antiparallel with respect to the Cr1, and Co moments. Moreover, the observed anomaly in the thermal expansion and lattice parameters at 730$\pm$5~K suggest that the distortion in crystal structure may play an important role in the magnetic phase transition., Comment: submitted

We report the evolution of structural, magnetic, transport, and electronic properties of bulk polycrystalline La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$Co$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$ ($x =$ 0.025--0.25) samples. The Rietveld refinement of the x-ray diffraction patterns with R$\bar3$c space group reveals that the lattice parameters and rhombohedral distortion monotonously increase with the Nb$^{5+}$(4$d^0$) substitution ($x$). The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a decrease in the magnetic ordering temperature and net magnetization with $x$, which manifests that the Nb substitution dilutes the ferromagnetic (FM) double exchange interaction and enhances the antiferromagnetic (AFM) super-exchange interaction. Interestingly, for the $x>$ 0.1 samples the FM order is completely suppressed and the emergence of a glassy state is clearly evident. Moreover, the decrease in the coercivity (H$\rm_{C}$) and remanence (M$\rm_{r}$) with $x$ in the magnetic isotherms measured at 5~K further confirms the dominance of AFM interactions and reduction of FM volume fraction for the $x>$ 0.1 samples. More interestingly, we observe resistivity minima for the $x=$ 0.025 and 0.05 samples, which are analyzed using the quantum corrections in the conductivity, and found that the weak localization effect dominates over the renormalized electron-electron interactions in the 3D limit. Further, a semiconducting resistivity behavior is obtained for $x>$ 0.05, which follows the Arrhenius law at high temperatures ($\sim$160--320~K), and the 3D-variable range hopping prevails in the low-temperature region ($<$160~K). The core-level photoemission spectra confirm the valence state of constituent elements and the absence of Co$^{2+}$ is discernible., Comment: submitted

We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties as well as lattice dynamics and spin-phonon coupling of $\beta$-Na$_{0.33}$V$_2$O$_5$ using temperature-dependent Raman scattering, dc-magnetization and dc-resistivity, x-ray photoemission, and absorption spectroscopy. The Rietveld refinement of XRD pattern with space group C2/m confirms the monoclinic structure. The analysis of temperature-dependent Raman spectra in a temperature range of 13--673~K reveals an anharmonic dependence of the phonon frequency and full width at half maximum, which is accredited to the symmetric phonon decay. However, below about 40 K, the hardening of the phonon frequency beyond anharmonicity is attributed to the spin-phonon coupling. Interestingly, the estimated effective magnetic moment $\mu_{\rm eff}=$ 0.63~$\mu_B$ from the magnetization data manifests a mixed-valence state of V ions in 4+ (18$\pm$1\%) and 5+ (82$\pm$1\%). A similar ratio of V$^{4+}$ to V$^{5+}$ is also observed in the x-ray photoemission and x-ray absorption near-edge spectra and that is found to be consistent with the sample stoichiometry. In addition, the V$^{4+}$ ions are distributed between different vanadium (V1 and V3) sites. The analysis of extended x-ray absorption fine structure at different V-sites gives the corresponding V--O bond lengths, which are utilized in the assignment of Raman modes. Moreover, the temperature-dependent resistivity resembles a semiconducting behavior where the charge carrier transport is facilitated by the band conduction at higher temperatures and via hopping $\le$260~K., Comment: to be published in PRB

We report the electronic and local structural investigation of double pervoskites Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0--1) using x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended x-ray absorption fine structures (EXAFS) at the Nb, Co, and Sr $K$-edges. The $ab$ $initio$ simulations and detailed analysis of the Nb and Co $K$-edge XANES spectra demonstrate that the observed pre-edge features arise from the transition of 1$s$ electrons to the mixed $p-d$ hybridized states. We reveal a $z$-out Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion in the CoO$_6$ octahedra, which decreases monotonically due to an enhancement in the JT inactive Co$^{2+}$ ions with $x$ . On the other hand, the $z$-in distortion in NbO$_6$ octahedra remains unaltered up to $x=$ 0.4 and then decreases with further increase in $x$. This sudden change in the local coordination around Nb atoms is found to be responsible for the evolution of the antiferromagnetic interactions in $x \geqslant$ 0.6 samples. Also, we establish a correlation between the degree of octahedral distortion and intensity of the white line feature in the XANES spectra and possible reason for this are discussed. More interestingly, we observe the signature of KN$_1$ double electron excitation in the Sr $K$-edge EXAFS spectra for all the samples, which is found to be in good agreement with the $Z$+1 approximation. Further, the Co L$_{2,3}$ edge shows the reduction in the crystal field strength and hence an increase in the charge transfer energy ($\Delta_{ct}$) with the La substitution., Comment: submitted

We use temperature dependent neutron powder diffraction (NPD) to investigate the structural changes and magnetic interactions in double perovskite Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0.4 and 0.6). A structural phase transition from tetragonal ($I4/m$) to monoclinic ($P2_1/n$) is observed between $x=$ 0.4 and 0.6 samples. Interestingly, temperature evolution of the unit cell parameters follow the Gr\"uneisen approximation, and the analysis suggest the isotropic thermal expansion in case of the $x=$ 0.4 sample, whereas the $x=$ 0.6 sample shows the anisotropy where the thermal expansion along the $c$-axis significantly deviates from the Gr\"uneisen function. We observe the $z$-out Jahn-Teller distortion in the CoO$_6$ and consequently $z$-in distortion in the adjacent NbO$_6$ octahedra. With increase in the La substitution, a decrease in the degree of octahedral distortion is evident from the significant reduction in the local distortion parameter $\Delta$ around the B-site atoms., Comment: submitted

In search of the potential cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries and to understand the diffusion kinetics, we report the detailed analysis of electrochemical investigation of honeycomb structured Na$_{2}$Ni$_{2}$TeO$_{6}$ material using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT). We found the discharge capacities of 82 and 77 mAhg$^{-1}$ at 0.05~C and 0.1~C current rates, respectively, and the mid-working potential of $\approx$3.9~V at 1~C and high capacity retention of 80\% after 500 cycles at 0.5~C as well as excellent rate capability. The analysis of CV data at different scan rates reveals the pseudo-capacitive mechanism of sodium-ion storage. Interestingly, the {\it in-situ} EIS measurements show a systematic change in the charge-transfer resistance at different charge/discharge stages as well as after different number of cycles. The diffusion coefficient extracted using CV, EIS and GITT lies mainly in the range of 10$^{-10}$ to 10$^{-12}$ cm$^{2}$s$^{-1}$ and the de-insertion/insertion of Na$^+$-ion concentration during electrochemical cycling is consistent with the ratio of Ni$^{3+}$/Ni$^{2+}$ valence state determined by photoemission study. Moreover, the post-cyclic results of retrieved active material show very stable structure and morphology even after various charge-discharge cycles. We present a comprehensive study of the low-energy band structure and Fermi surface (FS) topology of $A$Co$_2$As$_2$ ($A=$ Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu) using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental FS topology and band dispersion data are compared with theoretical full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave (FP-LAPW) calculations, which yielded reasonably good agreement. We demonstrate that the FS maps of $A$Co$_2$As$_2$ are significantly different from those of the parent compounds of Fe-based high-temperature superconductors. Further, the FSs of CaCo$_2$As$_2$ do not show significant changes across its antiferromagnetic transition temperature. The band dispersions extracted in different momentum $(k_{\it x}, k_{\it y})$ directions show a small electron pocket at the center and a large electron pocket at the corner of the Brillouin zone (BZ). The absence of the hole FS in these compounds does not allow nesting between pockets at the Fermi energy ({\it E}$_{\rm F}$), which is in contrast to $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$-type parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors. Interestingly, we find that the hole bands are moved 300--400~meV below $E_{\rm F}$ depending on the $A$ element. Moreover, the existence of nearly flat bands in the vicinity of $E_{\rm F}$ are consistent with the large density of states at $E_{\rm F}$. We use x-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate the local structure and electronic properties of bulk La$_{1-y}$Sr$_{y}$Co$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$ ($y=$ 2$x$ as LSCNO and $y=$ 0 as LCNO) samples. The x-ray absorption near-edge spectra (XANES) of LSCNO at Co K-edge affirm the valence state of Co in 3+. However, in the case of the LCNO, a subtle variation in the valence state of Co ions from 3+ to 2+ is evident with Nb substitution. The detailed analysis of the Fourier transform (FT) of the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) for the LSCNO samples exhibit the two groups of the bond-lengths owing to the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion in the CoO$_6$ octahedra, which manifest that the Co$^{3+}$ ions exist in the intermediate spin-state (t$^5_{2g}$e$^1_g$) at room temperature. However, we find that the JT distortion is not present in LCNO samples for $x>$0.025 due to an increase in the high-spin Co$^{2+}$/Co$^{3+}$ ions accompanied by the Nb--induced structural transformation. Intriguingly, the La L$_3$-edge spectra for the LSCNO samples exhibit that the La ions exist in the trivalent state and the local disorder around La atoms decreases with Sr and Nb substitution. Interestingly, the simulated FT of the EXAFS spectra at the La L$_3$-edge demonstrates the three groups of La--O bond lengths, which exhibit a monotonous change with Sr and Nb substitution. We present the structural, electronic, vibrational, and photoluminescence properties of polycrystalline LaV$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_4$ ($x =$ 0--0.2) samples at room temperature. The substitution of Nb at the V site shows the fascinating structural and optical behavior due to their isoelectronic character and larger ionic radii of Nb$^{5+}$ as compared to the V$^{5+}$. The Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction patterns demonstrate that the $x=$ 0 sample exist in a monoclinic (P2$_1$/n) phase, whereas for the $x >$ 0, both monoclinic and scheelite-tetragonal (I4$_1$/a) phases co-exist in a certain proportion. Interestingly, a monotonous enhancement in the Raman spectral intensity with Nb substitution is correlated with the substitution induced increase in the scheelite-tetragonal phase. The x-ray absorption measurements reveal that the La ions exist in a trivalent oxidation state, while V and Nb cations possess 5+ oxidation state in tetrahedral coordination. Moreover, the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicate that the Nb substitution give origin to some additional IR modes owing to the deformation of the VO$_4$$^{3-}$ tetrahedra and mixing of monoclinic and tetragonal phases. The photoluminescence measurements on these samples exhibit broadband spectra and their deconvolution designate the availability of more than one electron-hole pairs recombination center., Comment: submitted

We report the detailed analysis of specific heat [C$_{\rm P}$(T)] and ac-susceptibility for magnetically frustrated Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0--1) double perovskites to understand low temperature complex magnetic interactions and their evolution with $x$. Interestingly, the observed Schottky anomaly in the $x\leqslant$ 0.4 samples shifts gradually towards higher temperature with magnetic field as well as $x$, and the analysis reveal the persistence of the discrete energy states in these samples resulting from the spin-orbit coupling and octahedral distortion. Moreover, the extracted values of Land\'e g--factor indicate the existence of high-spin state Co$^{3+}$ ions close to non-magnetic low-spin state. The specific heat data show the $\lambda$-type anomaly for the $x\geqslant$ 0.6 samples due to evolution of the long range antiferromagnetic ordering. Our analysis of low temperature C$_{\rm P}$(T) data for the $x\geqslant$ 0.6 samples demonstrate the 3D isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions and the temperature induced second order AFM--paramagnetic phase transition. More interestingly, we demonstrate the presence of the free Co$^{2+}$ like Kramers doublet ground state in the $x =$1 sample. Further, the ac susceptibility and time evolution of the magnetization data reveal the low temperature cluster-glass like behavior in the $x=$ 0--0.4 samples, where spin-spin correlation strength decreases with $x$., Comment: accepted for publication in PRB

We study the effect of substrate induced strain on the structural, transport, optical and electronic properties of Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ double perovskite thin films. The reciprocal space mapping, $\phi$-scan and high-resolution $\theta$-2$\theta$ scans of x-ray diffraction patterns suggest the epitaxial nature and high-quality of the films deposited on various single crystal ceramic substrates. A systematic enhancement in the dc electronic conductivity is observed with increase in the compressive strain, while a sharp reduction in case of tensile strain, which are further supported by change in the activation energy and density of states near the Fermi level. The optical band gap extracted from two distinct absorption bands, observed in the visible-near infrared spectroscopy show a non-monotonic behavior in case of compressive strain while significant enhancement with tensile strain. Unlike the bulk Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ (Co$^{3+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$), we observe different valence states of Co namely 2+, 3+ and 4+, and tetravalent Nb (4$d^1$) in the x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, a reduction in the average oxygen valency with the compressive strain due to enhancement in the covalent character of Co/Nb--O bond is evident. We report the structural and magnetic behavior of single phase inverse Heusler alloys Cr$_2$Co$_{(1-x)}$Cr$_x$Al ($x = $ 0, 0.2, 0.4) using x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, isothermal magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Interestingly, the Rietveld refinement of XRD data with the space group I$\bar{4}m2$ reveal a tetragonal distortion with c/a ratio around 1.38 in these inverse Heusler structures. The bulk compositions have been confirmed by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy measurements. The active Raman mode F$_{2g}$ is observed at 320~cm$^{-1}$, which confirms the X-type Heusler structure as the A2 and B2 type structures are known to be not Raman active. The area of F$_{2g}$ mode decreases with Cr concentration, which indicate the origin of this mode due to Co vibrations. The isothermal magnetization data confirm the magnetic moment close to zero ($\le$0.02 $\mu_B/f.u.$) at $\approx$70~kOe and negligible coercive field suggest the fully compensated ferrimagnetic nature of these samples. We report large magnetoresistance (MR) and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in single crystals of magnetically (M= Ni and Fe) doped M$_x$Bi$_{0.97-x}$Sb$_{0.03}$ ($x=$ 0, 0.02) topological insulators. The R$\bar{3}$m symmetry and phase have been confirmed by the Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction data. Interestingly, a magnetic field induced phase transition from semi-metallic to semi-conducting type is found with the energy gap around 80 meV at 15 Tesla in the $x=$ 0 sample. Moreover, we observe linear behavior of MR up to 15 Tesla in transverse mode and SdH oscillations in longitudinal mode where the field direction is with respect to the current and crystal plane. For the parent sample, we found the coherence length L$_\phi=$ 12.7 nm through the fitting of MR data in transverse mode with modified H-L-N equation. The extracted frequencies of SdH oscillations using the fast Fourier transform method and Landau level (LL) fan diagram are found to be consistent for the parent and Ni doped samples. The determined Fermi surface area is found to be slightly larger in Ni doped as compared to the parent sample possibly due to change in the Fermi energy. The Kohler's plot indicates a single scattering mechanism below 100 K. More importantly, the analysis with the help of LL fan diagram reveals the non-zero Berry phase $\phi_{\rm B}= -$(1$\pm$0.1)$\pi$, which demonstrates the non-trivial topological states near the Dirac point in the parent and Ni doped samples., Comment: submitted, added fig2c, corrected fig4

We present the structural and transport properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Co$_{1-y}$Nb$_y$O$_3$ ($y=$ 0.1 and $x=$ 0; $y=$ 0.15 and $x=$ 0.3) thin films grown on (001) orientated single crystalline ceramic substrates to investigate the effect of lattice induced compressive and tensile strain. The high resolution x-ray diffraction measurements, including $\theta$-2$\theta$ scan, $\Phi$-scan, and reciprocal space mapping, affirm single phase; four-fold symmetry; good quality of deposited thin films. The atomic force micrographs confirm that these films have small root mean square roughness in the range of $\sim$0.5--7~nm. We observed additional Raman active modes in the films owing to the lowered crystal symmetry as compared to the bulk. More interestingly, the temperature dependent dc-resistivity measurements reveal that films become insulating due to induced lattice strain in comparison to bulk, however for the larger compressive strained films conductivity increase significantly owing to the higher degree of $p-d$ hybridization and reduction in bandwidth near the Fermi level., Comment: submitted

We investigate the structural, magnetic and spin-state transitions, and magnetocaloric properties of Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0--1) double perovskites. The structural transition from tetragonal to monoclinic phase at $x$ $\geqslant$ 0.6, and an evolution of (101)/(103) superlattice reflections and Raman active modes indicate the enhancement in the B-site ordering with $x$. The magnetic susceptibility data reveal the transition from weak ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering for $x$ $\geqslant$ 0.6 with T$_{\rm N}$$\approx$9--15~K. Interestingly, the La substitution drives towards more insulating state due to increase in high-spin Co$^{2+}$, whereas a spin-state crossover is observed in Co$^{3+}$ from high-spin to intermediate/low-spin states with $x$. We discuss the correlation between complex magnetic interactions and the presence of various Co spin-states in the system. Moreover, the emergence of metamagnetic nature due to the competition between FM and AFM interactions as well as crossover from conventional to inverse magnetocaloric effect have been demonstrated by detailed analysis of temperature and field dependent change in magnetic entropy., Comment: submitted

We report the thermoelectric (TE) properties of Na$_{0.74}$Co$_{0.95}$Nb$_{0.05}$O$_{2}$ in the temperature range $300-1200$ K, as a potential candidate for p-type thermoelectric material. The experimental values of Seebeck coefficient (S) are $ \sim $ $82-121$ $ \mu $V/K measured in the temperature range $300-620$ K. The positive values of S in the entire temperature range indicates p-type behaviour of the compound. At 300 K the experimental value of thermal conductivity ($ \kappa $) is $ \sim $ 1.88 W/m-K that increases up to $ \sim $ 420 K, then decreases till 620 K with corresponding value $ \sim $ 1.86 W/m-K. To understand the experimentally observed transport properties, we have calculated S and $\rho$ of this compound. Then, based on theoretical understanding, we have estimated \textit{figure-of-merit} (ZT) up to 1200 K by using calculated S and $\rho$ values with extrapolated experimental $\kappa$. The value of ZT is found to be $\sim$ 0.03 at 300 K, whereas, the highest value is observed as $\sim$ 1.7 at 1200 K. Finally, we have calculated the efficiency ($\eta$) by keeping the cold end temperature (T$_{c}$) fixed at 500 K and varying hot end temperature (T$_{h}$) from 500 to 1200 K, respectively. The maximum value of $\eta$ is found to be $\sim$ 8 %, when T$_{c}$ and T$_{h}$ are fixed at 500 and 1200 K, respectively. This result suggests that Na$_{0.74}$Co$_{0.95}$Nb$_{0.05}$O$_{2}$ compound can be used as a p-leg for making high temperature TE generator (TEG).

Search of new thermoelectric (TE) materials with high \textit{figure-of-merit} (ZT) is always inspired the researcher in TE field. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of TE properties of Na$_{0.74}$CoO$_{2}$ compound in high-temperature region. The experimental Seebeck coefficient (S) is found to vary from 64 to 118 $\mu$V/K in the temperature range $300-620$ K. The positive values of S are indicating the dominating p-type behaviour of the compound. The observed value of thermal conductivity ($\kappa$) is $\sim$ 2.2 W/m-K at 300 K. In the temperature region $300-430$ K, the value of $\kappa$ increases up to $\sim$ 2.6 W/m-K and then decreases slowly till 620 K with the corresponding value of $\sim$ 2.4 W/m-K. We have also carried out the theoretical calculations and the best matching between experimental and calculated values of transport properties are observed in spin-polarized calculation within DFT+\textit{U} by chosen \textit{U} = 4 eV. The maximum calculated value of ZT is found to be $\sim$ 0.67 at 1200 K for p-type conduction. Our computational study suggests that the possibility of n-type behaviour of the compound which can lead to a large value of ZT at higher temperature region. Electron doping of $\sim$ 5.1$\times$10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ is expected to give rise the high ZT value of $\sim$ 2.7 at 1200 K. Using these temperature-dependent ZT values, we have calculated the maximum possible values of efficiency ($\eta$) of thermoelectric generator (TEG) made by p and n-type Na$_{0.74}$CoO$_{2}$. The present study suggests that one can get the efficiency of a TE cell as high as $\sim$ 11$\%$ when the cold and hot end temperature are fixed at 300 K and 1200 K, respectively. Such high values of ZT and efficiency suggest that Na$_{0.74}$CoO$_{2}$ can be used as a potential candidate for high-temperature TE applications.

We report the structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$Al ($x=$ 0--0.5) Heusler alloys for spintronic and magnetic refrigerator applications. Room temperature X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction patterns along with Rietveld refinements confirm that the samples are of single phase and possess a cubic structure. Interestingly, magnetic susceptibly measurements indicate a second order phase transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic where the Curie temperature (T$_{\rm C}$) of Co$_2$CrAl increases from 330~K to 445~K with Ti substitution. Neutron powder diffraction data of the $x=$ 0 sample across the magnetic phase transition taken in a large temperature range confirm the structural stability and exclude the possibility of antiferromagnetic ordering. The saturation magnetization of the $x=$ 0 sample is found to be 8000~emu/mol (1.45~$\mu_{\rm B}$/{\it f.u.}) at 5~K, which is in good agreement with the value (1.35$\pm$0.05~$\mu_{\rm B}$/{\it f.u.}) obtained from the Rietveld analysis of the neutron powder diffraction pattern measured at temperature of 4~K. By analysing the temperature dependence of the neutron data of the $x=$ 0 sample, we find that the change in the intensity of the most intense Bragg peak (220) is consistent with the magnetization behavior with temperature. Furthermore, an enhancement of change in the magnetic entropy and relative cooling power values has been observed for the $x=$ 0.25 sample. Interestingly, the critical behavior analysis across the second order magnetic phase transition and extracted exponents ($\beta\approx$ 0.496, $\gamma\approx$ 1.348, and $\delta\approx$ 3.71 for the $x=$ 0.25 sample) suggest the presence of long-range ordering, which deviates towards 3D Heisenberg type interactions above T$_{\rm C}$, consistent with the interaction range value $\sigma$., Comment: submitted

We study Na ion diffusion and electrochemical performance of NaVO$_3$ (NVO) as anode material in Li/Na--ion batteries with the specific capacity of $\approx$350 mAhg$^{-1}$ at the current density 11~mAg$^{-1}$ after 300 cycles. Remarkably, the capacity retains $\ge$200~mAhg$^{-1}$ even after 400~cycles at 44~mAg$^{-1}$ with Coulombic efficiency $>$99\%. The deduced diffusion coefficient from galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements for NVO as anode in Li--ion battery is in the range of 10$^{-10}$--10$^{-12}$~cm$^2$s$^{-1}$. In case of Na-ion batteries, the NVO electrode exhibits initial capacity of 385~mAhg$^{-1}$ at 7~mAg$^{-1}$ current rate, but the capacity degradation is relatively faster in subsequent cycles. We find the diffusion coefficient of NVO--Na cells similar to that of NVO--Li. On the other hand, our charge discharge measurements suggest that the overall performance of NVO anode is better in Li--ion battery than Na-ion. Moreover, we use the density functional theory to simulate the energetics of Na vacancy formation in the bulk of the NVO structure, which is found to be 0.88~eV higher than that of the most stable (100) surface. We study the magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior of Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Al ($x=$ 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) Heusler alloys across the ferromagnetic (FM) transition (T$_{\rm C}$). The Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction patterns exhibit single phase cubic structure for all the samples. The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility $\chi$(T) data show a systematic enhancement in the Curie temperature and effective magnetic moment with Mn concentration, which is consistent with the Slater-Pauling behavior. The M(H) isotherms also exhibit the FM ordering and the analysis of $\chi$(T) data indicates the nature of the phase transition to be a second order, which is further supported by scaling of the entropy curves and Arrott plot. Interestingly, the Mn substitution causes an increase in the magnetic entropy change and hence large relative cooling power for multi-stage magnetic refrigerator applications. In order to understand the nature of the magnetic phase transition we examine the critical exponents $\beta$, $\gamma$, $\delta$ for the $x=$ 0.75 sample by the modified Arrott plot and the critical isotherm analysis, which is further confirmed by Kouvel-Fisher method and Widom scaling relation, respectively. The estimated values of $\beta=$ 0.507, $\gamma=$ 1.056, $\delta=$ 3.084 are found to be close to the mean field theoretical values. The renormalized isotherms (m vs h) corresponding to these exponent values collapse into two branches, above and below T$_{\rm C}$ that validates our analysis. Our results suggest for the existence of long-range FM interactions, which decays slower than power law as $J(r)\sim r^{-4.5}$ for a 3 dimensional mean field theory., Comment: originally submitted on 26/3/2019

We study the structural, magnetic, transport and electronic properties of LaCoO$_3$ with Sr/Nb co-substitution, i.e., La$_{(1-2x)}$Sr$_{2x}$Co$_{(1-x)}$Nb$_{x}$O$_3$ using x-ray and neutron diffraction, dc and ac-magnetization, neutron depolarization, dc-resistivity and photoemission measurements. The powder x-ray and neutron diffraction data were fitted well with the rhombohedral crystal symmetry (space group \textit{R$\bar{3}$c}) in Rietveld refinement analysis. The calculated effective magnetic moment ($\approx$3.85~$\mu_B$) and average spin ($\approx$1.5) of Co ions from the analysis of magnetic susceptibility data are consistent with 3+ state of Co ions in intermediate-spin (IS) and high-spin (HS) states in the ratio of $\approx$50:50, i.e., spin-state of Co$^{3+}$ is preserved at least up to $x=$ 0.1 sample. Interestingly, the magnetization values were significantly increased with respect to the $x=$ 0 sample, and the M-H curves show non-saturated behavior up to an applied maximum magnetic field of $\pm$70 kOe. The ac-susceptibility data show a shift in the freezing temperature with excitation frequency and the detailed analysis confirm the slower dynamics and a non-zero value of the Vogel-Fulcher temperature T$_0$, which suggests for the cluster spin glass. The unusual magnetic behavior indicates the presence of complex magnetic interactions at low temperatures. The dc-resistivity measurements show the insulating nature in all the samples. However, relatively large density of states $\approx$10$^{22}$ eV$^{-1}$cm$^{-3}$ and low activation energy $\approx$130~meV are found in $x=$ 0.05 sample. Using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, we study the core-level spectra of La 3$d$, Co 2$p$, Sr 3$d$, and Nb 3$d$ to confirm the valence state., Comment: submitted

We report the synthesis, physical properties and electrochemical performance of Zn substituted Na$_{0.44}$Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$O$_2$ ($x=$ 0 -- 0.02) nanostructures as cathode in Na-ion batteries for energy storage applications. These samples stabilize in the orthorhombic structure and the morphology is found to be slab like with 100 -- 200~nm width and few micrometer of length. The resistivity measurements show highly insulating nature for all the samples, where the activation energy decreases with increasing Zn concentration indicating more defect levels in the band gap. The cyclic voltammogram (CV) shows reversible oxidation and reduction peaks, which clearly shift towards higher/lower potentials with increasing Zn concentration up to 2\%. We observed the specific capacity of about 100~mAh/g at current density of 4 mA/g and improved cycle life for Zn substituted $x=$ 0.005 sample. However, with further increasing the Zn concentration ($x=$ 0.02), the specific capacity decreases, which can be a manifestation of the decreased number of reduction peaks in the CV data., Comment: accepted for publication in Ceramics International

We report on synthesis and characterization of gallide cluster based Mo8Ga41 superconductor. Transport and magnetization measurements confirm the superconducting transition temperature to be 9.8 K. The upper critical field, lower critical field, Ginzburg-Landau coherence length and penetration depth are estimated to be 11.8T, 150G, 5.2nm, 148nm respectively. The electronic band structure, density of states and phonon dispersion curve calculations are obtained by using Density Functional Theory. The core level X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) reveals the binding energy information of the constituting elements Mo and Ga in Mo8Ga41. The valence band spectra from XPS is in good agreement with calculated density of states (DOS). The zero field critical current density (Jc) at T = 2 K is ~ 3*10^5 A/cm^2 which is indicative of efficient flux pinning in the as grown compound. About two fold enhancement in critical current density with application of external pressure (1.1 GPa) is observed with marginal decrease in transition temperature. The fitting of current density to double exponential model confirms possibility of two gap superconductivity in Mo8Ga41.

We prepared Na$_x$TO$_2$ (T = Mn, Co) nanostructures to use as cathode material in Na-ion batteries. The Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction data confirms the hexagonal symmetry. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy measurements show hexagonal and rod-shape morphology for T = Co and Mn, respectively. The magnetic measurements indicate the presence of variable oxidation states of Mn/Co ions, but no long range ordering till 5~K. We find that the Na$_{0.6}$MnO$_2$ is highly insulating whereas Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_2$ is semiconducting in nature. The conduction in Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_2$ takes place through both variable range hopping (VRH) as well as activation mechanisms in different temperature ranges. However, for Na$_{0.6}$MnO$_2$ the VRH prevails at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the coin cells have been fabricated and tested the electrochemical behavior using cyclic voltammetry, which confirms the reversibility of Na--ions during intercalation/de-intercalation., Comment: to appear in Materials Research Bulletin

We report the structural, magnetic, transport and electronic properties of Nb substituted LaCo$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$ ($x =$ 0--0.2). The Rietveld analysis of x-ray diffraction data demonstrate structural phase transitions from rhombohedral to orthorhombic and further to monoclinic with increasing the Nb concentration up to $x \ge$ 0.2. Interestingly, we observed dramatic changes in the magnetization (M) with increasing the Nb concentration, as the M sharply increases below 10~K even at 2.5\% substitution. Furthermore, ac susceptibility data show the spin-glass behavior in $x=$ 0.1 sample. We find that the density of states near the Fermi level decreases and the activation energy increases, which results in the decreasing conductivity with higher Nb concentration. A significant shift in the peak position of A$_{2g}$ phonon mode has been observed using Raman spectroscopy, which indicates the change in the coupling due to the structural distortion with Nb substitution. The core-level photoemission study confirms that the Nb is present in 5+ valence state. Our study reveals that the nonmagnetic Nb$^{5+}$ ($d^0$) substitution converts Co$^{3+}$ ions to Co$^{2+}$ and stabilize both in the high-spin state. Our results suggest that structural and spin-state transitions as well as the difference in the ionic radii between Nb$^{5+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ are playing an important role in tuning the physical properties., Comment: to appear in PRB

Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is an extensively studied spin-orbit coupling induced insulator with antiferromagnetic ground state. The delicate balance between competing energy scales plays crucial role for its low temperature phase, and the route of chemical substitution has often been used to tune these different energy scales. Here, we report an evolution of structural, magnetic and electronic properties in doped Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$O$_4$ ($x$ $\leq$ 0.2). The substitution of Cu$^{2+}$ (3$d^9$) for Ir$^{4+}$ (5$d^5$) acts for electron doping, though it tunes the related parameters such as, spin-orbit coupling, electron correlation and Ir charge state. Moreover, both Ir$^{4+}$ and Cu$^{2+}$ has single unpaired spin though it occupies different $d$-orbitals. With Cu substitution, system retains its original structural symmetry but the structural parameters show systematic changes. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements show Ir$^{4+}$ equivalently converts to Ir$^{5+}$ and a significant enhancement in the density of states has been observed at the Fermi level due to the contribution from the Cu 3$d$ orbitals, which supports the observed decrease in the resistivity with Cu substitution. While the long-range magnetic ordering is much weakened and the highest doped sample shows almost paramagnetic-like behavior the overall system remains insulator. Analysis of resistivity data shows mode of charge conduction in whole series follows 2-dimensional variable-range-hopping model but the range of validity varies with temperature. Whole series of samples exhibit negative magnetoresistance at low temperature which is considered to be a signature of weak localization effect in spin-orbit coupled system, and its evolution with Cu appears to follow the variation of resistivity with $x$., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, appeared in Phys. We use the x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, and photoelectron spectroscopy to study the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of La$_{(1-x)}$$A_x$CoO$_3$ ($A=$ Sr, Ca; $x=$ 0 -- 0.2) nanoparticles. The Rietveld refinements of room temperature powder x-ray diffraction data confirm the single phase and the rhombohedral crystal structure with R$\bar{3}$C space group. We find drastic changes in the magnetic properties and spin-states with Sr/Ca substitution (hole doping). For $x=$ 0 sample, the magnetic measurements show a ferromagnetic transition at T$_{\rm C}$$\approx$85 K, which shifted significantly to higher temperatures with hole doping; simultaneously a significant increase in the spontaneous magnetic moment has been observed. Whereas, the coercive field H$_{\rm C}$ values are 7, 4.4 and 13.2~kOe for $x=$ 0, 0.2 (Sr), and 0.2(Ca) samples. Furthermore, the FC magnetization shows a ferromagnetic Brillouin function like behavior at low temperatures for Ca samples. We demonstrate that the Sr/Ca substitution increases the population of IS (Co$^{3+}$) and LS (Co$^{4+}$) states and tune the ferromagnetism in nanoparticles via double-exchange interactions between Co$^{3+}$-- Co$^{4+}$. Our results suggest an important role of hole carriers and nano-size effect in controlling the spin-state and magnetism in La$_{(1-x)}$$A_x$CoO$_3$ nanoparticles., Comment: submitted

The interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electron correlation ($U$) is considered for many exotic phenomena in iridium oxides. We have investigated the evolution of structural, magnetic and electronic properties in pyrochlore iridate Y$_2$Ir$_{2-x}$Ru$_{x}$O$_7$ where the substitution of Ru has been aimed to tune this interplay. The Ru substitution does not introduce any structural phase transition, however, we do observe an evolution of lattice parameters with the doping level $x$. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) study indicates Ru adopts charge state of Ru$^{4+}$ and replaces the Ir$^{4+}$ accordingly. Magnetization data reveal both the onset of magnetic irreversibility and the magnetic moment decreases with progressive substitution of Ru. These materials show non-equilibrium low temperature magnetic state as revealed by magnetic relaxation data. Interestingly, we find magnetic relaxation rate increases with substitution of Ru. The electrical resistivity shows an insulating behavior in whole temperature range, however, resistivity decreases with substitution of Ru. We present a combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations study of the electronic structure of LaAgSb$_2$ in the entire first Brillouin zone. We observe a Dirac-cone-like structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level formed by the crossing of two linear energy bands, as well as the nested segments of Fermi surface pocket emerging from the cone. Our ARPES results show the close relationship of the Dirac cone to the charge-density-wave ordering, providing consistent explanations for exotic behaviors in this material., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We employed {\it in-situ} pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to investigate the mechanism of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in NdNiO$_3$ (NNO) thin films, grown on NdGaO$_3$(110) and LaAlO$_3$(100) substrates. In the metallic phase, we observe three dimensional hole and electron Fermi surface (FS) pockets formed from strongly renormalized bands with well-defined quasiparticles. Upon cooling across the MIT in NNO/NGO sample, the quasiparticles lose coherence via a spectral weight transfer from near the Fermi level to localized states forming at higher binding energies. In the case of NNO/LAO, the bands are apparently shifted upward with an additional holelike pocket forming at the corner of the Brillouin zone. We find that the renormalization effects are strongly anisotropic and are stronger in NNO/NGO than NNO/LAO. Our study reveals that substrate-induced strain tunes the crystal field splitting, which changes the FS properties, nesting conditions, and spin-fluctuation strength, and thereby controls the MIT via the formation of an electronic order parameter with Q$_{AF}\sim$(1/4, 1/4, 1/4$\pm$$\delta$)., Comment: submitted

Temperature dependence of the electronic structure of SmB6 is studied by high-resolution ARPES down to 1 K. We demonstrate that there is no essential difference for the dispersions of the surface states below and above the resistivity saturating anomaly (~ 3.5 K). Quantitative analyses of the surface states indicate that the quasi-particle scattering rate increases linearly as a function of temperature and binding energy, which differs from Fermi-Liquid behavior. Most intriguingly, we observe that the hybridization between the d and f states builds gradually over a wide temperature region (30 K < T < 110 K). The surface states appear when the hybridization starts to develop. Our detailed temperature-dependence results give a complete interpretation of the exotic resistivity result of SmB6, as well as the discrepancies among experimental results concerning the temperature regions in which the topological surface states emerge and the Kondo gap opens, and give new insights into the exotic Kondo crossover and its relationship with the topological surface states in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The concept of a topological Kondo insulator (TKI) has been brought forward as a new class of topological insulators in which non-trivial surface states reside in the bulk Kondo band gap at low temperature due to the strong spin-orbit coupling [1-3]. In contrast to other three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (e.g. Bi2Se3), a TKI is truly insulating in the bulk [4]. Furthermore, strong electron correlations are present in the system, which may interact with the novel topological phase. Applying spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES) to the Kondo insulator SmB6, a promising TKI candidate, we reveal that the surface states of SmB6 are spin polarized, and the spin is locked to the crystal momentum. Counter-propagating states (i.e. at k and -k) have opposite spin polarizations protected by time-reversal symmetry. Together with the odd number of Fermi surfaces of surface states between the 4 time-reversal invariant momenta in the surface Brillouin zone [5], these findings prove, for the first time, that SmB6 can host non-trivial topological surface states in a full insulating gap in the bulk stemming from the Kondo effect. Hence our experimental results establish that SmB6 is the first realization of a 3D TKI. It can also serve as an ideal platform for the systematic study of the interplay between novel topological quantum states with emergent effects and competing order induced by strongly correlated electrons., Comment: 4 figures

Systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments have been carried out to investigate the bulk and (100) surface electronic structures of a topological mixed-valence insulator candidate, YbB6. The bulk states of YbB6 were probed with bulk-sensitive soft X-ray ARPES, which show strong three-dimensionality as required by cubic symmetry. Surprisingly the measured Yb 4f states are located around 1 eV and 2.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), instead of being near EF as indicated by first principle calculations. The dispersive bands near EF are B 2p states, which hybridize with the 4f states. Using surface-sensitive vacuum-ultraviolet ARPES, we revealed two-dimensional surface states which form three electron-like Fermi surfaces (FSs) with Dirac-cone-like dispersions. The odd number of surface FSs gives the first indication that YbB6 is a moderately correlated topological insulator. The spin-resolved ARPES measurements provide further evidence that these surface states are spin polarized with spin locked to the crystal momentum. We have observed a second set of surface states with different topology (hole-like pockets). Clear folding of the bands suggest their origin from a 1X2 reconstructed surface. We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on two families of high temperature superconductors (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$ La $% _{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ with $x=0.1$ ($T_{c}^{max}=56$ K) and $x=0.4$ ($% T_{c}^{max}=82$ K). The Fermi surface (FS) is found to be independent of $x$ or $y$, and its size indicates extreme sample-surface overdoping. This universal FS allowes the comparison of dynamical properties between superconductors of similar structure and identical doping, but different $% T_{c}^{max}$. We find that the high-energy ($\left\vert E\right\vert >50$% meV) nodal velocity in the $x=0.4$ family is higher than in the $x=0.1$ family. The implied correlation between $T_{c}^{max}$ and the hopping rate $% t $ supports the notion of kinetic energy driven superconductivity in the cuprates. We also find that the antinodal gap is higher for the $x=0.4$ family.

We report studies of CaCo{1.86}As2 single crystals. The electronic structure is probed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of CaCo{1.86}As2 and by full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave calculations for the supercell Ca8Co15As16 (CaCo{1.88}As2). Our XRD crystal structure refinement is consistent with the previous combined refinement of x-ray and neutron powder diffraction data showing a collapsed-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure with 7(1)% vacancies on the Co sites corresponding to the composition CaCo{1.86}As2 [D. G. Quirinale et al., Phys. Rev. B 88, 174420 (2013)]. The anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data are consistent with the magnetic neutron diffraction data of Quirianale et al. that demonstrate the presence of A-type collinear antiferromagnetic order below the Neel temperature TN = 52(1) K with the easy axis being the tetragonal c axis. However, no clear evidence from the resistivity rho(T) and heat capacity Cp(T) data for a magnetic transition at TN is observed. A metallic ground state is demonstrated from band calculations and the rho(T), Cp(T) and ARPES data, and spin-polarized calculations indicate a competition between the A-type AFM and FM ground states. The Cp(T) data exhibit a large Sommerfield electronic coefficient reflecting a large density of states at the Fermi energy D(EF), consistent with the band structure calculations which also indicate a large D(EF) arising from Co 3d bands. At 1.8 K the M(H) data for H|| c exhibit a well-defined first-order spin-flop transition at an applied field of 3.5 T. The small ordered moment of 0.3 muB/Co obtained from the M(H) data at low T, the large exchange enhancement of chi and the lack of a self-consistent interpretation of the chi(T) and M(H,T) data in terms of a local moment Heisenberg model together indicate that the magnetism of CaCo{1.86}As2 is itinerant., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables, 61 references; v2: extended the fits of experimental data by additional electronic structure calculations; published version

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the electronic structure of CaFe$_2$As$_2$ in previously unexplored collapsed tetragonal (CT) phase. This unusual phase of the iron arsenic high temperature superconductors was hard to measure as it exists only under pressure. By inducing internal strain, via the post growth, thermal treatment of the single crystals, we were able to stabilize the CT phase at ambient-pressure. We find significant differences in the Fermi surface topology and band dispersion data from the more common orthorhombic-antiferromagnetic or tetragonal-paramagnetic phases, consistent with electronic structure calculations. The top of the hole bands sinks below the Fermi level, which destroys the nesting present in parent phases. The absence of nesting in this phase along with apparent loss of Fe magnetic moment, are now clearly experimentally correlated with the lack of superconductivity in this phase., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted in PRB(RC)

In tetragonal SrCo2As2 single crystals, inelastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrated that strong stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations occur at a temperature T = 5 K [W. Jayasekara et al., arXiv:1306.5174] that are the same as in the isostructural AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) parent compounds of high-Tc superconductors. This surprising discovery suggests that SrCo2As2 may also be a good parent compound for high-Tc superconductivity. Here, structural and thermal expansion, electrical resistivity rho, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), heat capacity Cp, magnetic susceptibility chi, 75As NMR and neutron diffraction measurements of SrCo2As2 crystals are reported together with LDA band structure calculations that shed further light on this fascinating material. The c-axis thermal expansion coefficient alpha_c is negative from 7 to 300 K, whereas alpha_a is positive over this T range. The rho(T) shows metallic character. The ARPES measurements and band theory confirm the metallic character and in addition show the presence of a flat band near the Fermi energy E_F. The band calculations exhibit an extremely sharp peak in the density of states D(E_F) arising from a flat d_{x^2 - y^2} band. A comparison of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the electronic specific heat with chi(T = 0) suggests the presence of strong ferromagnetic itinerant spin correlations which on the basis of the Stoner criterion predicts that SrCo2As2 should be an itinerant ferromagnet, in conflict with the magnetization data. The chi(T) does have a large magnitude, but also exhibits a broad maximum at 115 K suggestive of dynamic short-range AFM spin correlations, in agreement with the neutron scattering data. The measurements show no evidence for any type of phase transition between 1.3 and 300 K and we propose that metallic SrCo2As2 has a gapless quantum spin-liquid ground state., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, 97 references; v2: updated Ref. 23 and corrected several typos; v3: minor revisions, published version. Recent theoretical calculations and experimental results suggest that the strongly correlated material SmB$_{6}$ may be a realization of a topological Kondo insulator. We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on SmB$_{6}$ in order to elucidate elements of the electronic structure relevant to the possible occurrence of a topological Kondo insulator state. The obtained electronic structure in the whole three-dimensional momentum space reveals one electron-like 5d bulk band centred at the X point of the bulk Brillouin zone that is hybridized with strongly correlated f electrons, as well as the opening of a Kondo bandgap ($\Delta_B$ $\sim$ 20 meV) at low temperature. In addition, we observe electron-like bands forming three Fermi surfaces at the center $\bar{\Gamma}$ point and boundary $\bar{X}$ point of the surface Brillouin zone. These bands are not expected from calculations of the bulk electronic structure, and their observed dispersion characteristics are consistent with surface states. Our results suggest that the unusual low-temperature transport behavior of SmB$_{6}$ is likely to be related to the pronounced surface states sitting inside the band hybridisation gap and/or the presence of a topological Kondo insulating state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave (FP-LAPW) calculations to study the electronic structure of BaCo2As2. The Fermi surface (FS) maps and the corresponding band dispersion data (at 90 K and 200 K) reveal a small electron pocket at the center and a large electron pocket at the corner of the Brillouin zone. Therefore the nesting between electron and hole FS pockets is absent in this compound, in contrast to the parent compounds of FeAs-based high-T_c superconductors. The electronic structure at about 500 meV binding energy is very similar to features at the chemical potential in BaFe2As2. This indicates that complete substitution of Co for Fe causes a nearly rigid shift in the Fermi energy by adding two electrons per formula unit without significant changes in the band dispersions. We have performed detailed studies of the temperature evolution of the electronic structure in Ba(Fe(1-x)Ru(x))2As2 using Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES). Surprisingly, we find that the binding energy of both hole and electron bands changes significantly with temperature in pure and Ru substituted samples. The hole and electron pockets are well nested at low temperature in unsubstituted (BaFe2As2) samples, which likely drives the spin density wave (SDW) and resulting antiferromagnetic order. Upon warming, this nesting is degraded as the hole pocket shrinks and the electron pocket expands. Our results demonstrate that the temperature dependent nesting may play an important role in driving the antiferromagnetic/paramagnetic phase transition., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study non-trivial surface state in psuedobinary Bi2Se0.6Te2.3 topological insulator. We show that unlike previously studied binaries, this is an intrinsic topological insulator with conduction bulk band residing well above the chemical potential. Our data indicates that under good vacuum condition there are no significant aging effects for more then two weeks after cleaving. We also demonstrate that shift of the Kramers point at low temperature is caused by UV assisted absorption of molecular hydrogen. Our findings pave the way for applications of these materials in devices and present an easy scheme to tune their properties., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
