Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on piezoelectric insulators can generate dynamic periodic potentials inside one-dimensional and two-dimensional materials. These periodic potentials have been utilized or proposed for various applications, including acoustoelectric charge pumping. In this study, we investigate acoustoelectric charge pumping in graphene with very low electrostatic disorder. By employing a graphite top gate on boron-nitride-encapsulated graphene, we adjust the graphene carrier concentration over a broad range, enabling us to examine the acoustoelectric signal in both mixed-carrier and single-carrier regimes. We discuss the benefits of h-BN-encapsulated graphene for charge pumping applications and introduce a model that describes the acoustoelectric signal across all carrier concentrations, including at the charge neutrality point. This quantitative model will support future SAW-enabled explorations of phenomena in low-dimensional materials and guide the design of novel SAW sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional magnets offer a new platform for exploring fundamental properties in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures and their device applications. Here, we investigated heterostructure devices of itinerant metallic vdW ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) with monolayer chemical vapor deposited graphene. The anomalous Hall effect measurements of FGT Hall-bar devices exhibit robust ferromagnetism with strong perpendicular anisotropy at low temperatures. The electrical transport properties measured in FGT/graphene heterostructure devices exhibit a tunneling transport with weak temperature dependence. We assessed the suitability of such FGT/graphene heterostructures for spin injection and detection and investigated the presence of FGT on possible spin absorption and spin relaxation in the graphene channel. We demonstrate an electrically tunable thin-film magnetic core using a synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) structure. It consists of two ferromagnetic layers antiferromagnetically coupled together through an exchange coupling layer. Variation of susceptibility is achieved by leading a current through the structure. A tuning range (relative change in susceptibility) of 35% can be achieved at 800 Hz by using patterned NiFe(12 nm)/Ru(0.7 nm)/NiFe(12 nm) SAF structures. Different patterns of test samples are designed to investigate the influence on the tuning performance. Index Terms--Inductor, magnetic susceptibility, synthetic antiferromagnet, tunable.

Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) characterization, using a vector network analyzer (VNA), is widely used to determine anisotropy, g-factor, and Gilbert damping parameter of magnetic thin films, but results are typically reported without calculation of the measurement accuracy. We present a method of processing VNA-FMR measurements to determine both the value and confidence interval of these properties. The discussion is presented using FMR data obtained from stacks of MgO/CoFeB/Ta/ CoFeB/MgO with varying CoFeB thickness. Measured S-parameters are de-embedded, drift corrected, fit to a Lorentzian curve, and analyzed to produce a confidence interval. A method of plotting the results of the Lorentzian fitting such that fitting errors or measurement drift can be visually analyzed is shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method for measuring the magnetostriction of thin films using a vibrating sample magnetometer is described. We describe the design of a custom sample holder to apply an adjustable bending stress to the sample during measurement and observe the resulting change in the M-H loop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel patterning technique that creates magnetization patterns in a continuous magnetostrictive film with surface acoustic waves is demonstrated. Patterns of 10 lm wide stripes of alternating magnetization and a 3 lm dot of reversed magnetization are written using standing and focusing acoustic waves, respectively. The magnetization pattern is size-tunable, erasable, and rewritable by changing the magnetic field and acoustic power. This versatility, along with its solid-state implementation (no moving parts) and electronic control, renders it as a promising technique for application in magnetic recording, magnonic signal processing, magnetic particle manipulation, and spatial magneto-optical modulation. 3-D printing processes, which use drop-on-demand inkjet printheads, have great potential in designing and prototyping magnetic materials. Unlike conventional deposition and lithography, magnetic particles in the printing ink can be aligned by an external magnetic field to achieve both high permeability and low hysteresis losses, enabling prototyping and development of novel magnetic composite materials and components, e.g., for inductor and antennae applications. In this work, we report an inkjet printing technique with magnetic alignment capability. Magnetic films with and without particle alignment are printed, and their magnetic properties are compared. In the alignment-induced hard axis direction, an increase in high frequency permeability and a decrease in hysteresis losses are observed. Our results suggest that unique magnetic structures with arbitrary controllable anisotropy, not feasible otherwise, may be fabricated via inkjet printing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic composites containing anisotropic magnetic particles can achieve properties not possible in corresponding bulk or thin films of the magnetic material. In this work, we discuss how planar magnetic anisotropy may be achieved in a composite by aligning disk-shaped particles in an in-plane rotating magnetic field. Previous efforts have reported a simple model of aligning particles in a high-frequency rotating magnetic field. However, no complete analytic solution was proposed. Here, we provide a full analytic solution that describes the alignment dynamics of microdisks in a rotating field that covers the entire frequency range. We also provide simplified solutions at both high-frequency and low-frequency limits through asymptotic expansions for easy implementation into industrial settings.
