We report on the present stage of SN 1987A as observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We reanalyze published Chandra observations and add three more epochs of Chandra data to get a consistent picture of the evolution of the X-ray fluxes in several energy bands. We discuss the implications of several calibration issues for Chandra data. Using the most recent Chandra calibration files, we find that the 0.5-2.0 keV band fluxes of SN 1987A have increased by ~6 x 10 ^-13 erg s^-1 cm^-2 per year since 2009. This is in contrast with our previous result that the 0.5-2.0 keV light curve showed a sudden flattening in 2009. Aims. We report on the recent observations of the supernova remnant SNR 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud with XMM-Newton. Carefully monitoring the evolution of the X-ray light curve allows to probe the complex circumstellar medium structure observed around the supernova progenitor star. Methods. We analyse all XMM-Newton observations of SNR 1987A from January 2007 to December 2011, using data from the EPIC-pn camera. Spectra from all epochs are extracted and analysed in a homogeneous way. Using a multi-shock model to fit the spectra across the 0.2-10 keV band we measure soft and hard X-ray fluxes with high accuracy. In the hard X-ray band we examine the presence and properties of Fe K ines. Our findings are interpreted in the framework of a hydrodynamics-based model. Results. The soft X-ray flux of SNR 1987A continuously increased in the recent years. Although the light curve shows a mild flattening, there is no sudden break as reported in an earlier work, a picture echoed by a revision of the Chandra light curve. We therefore conclude that material in the equatorial ring and out-of-plane HII regions are still being swept-up. We estimate the thickness of the equatorial ring to be at least 4.5x10^16 cm (0.0146 pc). This lower limit will increase as long as the soft X-ray flux has not reached a turn-over. We detect a broad Fe K line in all spectra from 2007 to 2011. The widths and centroid energies of the lines indicate the presence of a collection of iron ionisation stages. Thermal emission from the hydrodynamic model does not reproduce the low-energy part of the line (6.4-6.5 keV), suggesting that fluorescence from neutral and/or low ionisation Fe might be present., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Observations of SN 1987A by the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) in 1999 and the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) in 2003 show very broad (v-b) lines with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of order 10^4 kms; at these times the blast wave was primarily interacting with the HII region around the progenitor. Since then, the X-ray emission has been increasingly dominated by narrower components as the blast wave encounters dense equatorial ring (ER) material. Even so, continuing v-b emission is seen in the grating spectra suggesting that interaction with HII region material is on-going. Based on the deep HETG 2007 and 2011 data sets, and confirmed by RGS and other HETG observations, the v-b component has a width of 9300 +/-2000 kms FWHM and contributes of order 20% of the current 0.5--2 keV flux. Guided by this result, SN 1987A's X-ray spectra are modeled as the weighted sum of the non-equilibrium-ionization (NEI) emission from two simple 1D hydrodynamic simulations, this "2x1D" model reproduces the observed radii, light curves, and spectra with a minimum of free parameters. The interaction with the HII region (rho_init \sim 130 amu/cc, +/- 15 degrees opening angle) produces the very-broad emission lines and most of the 3-10 keV flux. Our ER hydrodynamics, admittedly a crude approximation to the multi-D reality, gives ER densities of order 10^4 amu/cc, requires dense clumps (x5.5 density enhancement in \sim 30% of the volume), and it predicts that the 0.5-2 keV flux will drop at a rate of \sim 17% per year once no new dense ER material is being shocked., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures. We have undertaken deep, high-resolution observations of SN 1987A at ~20 years after its explosion with the Chandra HETG and LETG spectrometers. Here we present the HETG X-ray spectra of SN 1987A having unprecedented spectral resolution and signal-to-noise in the 6 A to 20 A bandpass, which includes the H-like and He-like lines of Si, Mg, Ne, as well as O VIII lines and bright Fe XVII lines. In joint analysis with LETG data, we find that there has been a significant decrease from 2004 to 2007 in the average temperature of the highest temperature component of the shocked-plasma emission. Model fitting of the profiles of individual HETG lines yields bulk kinematic velocities of the higher-Z ions, Mg and Si, that are significantly lower than those inferred from the LETG 2004 observations., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) X-ray spectra are extracted from 17 bright, narrow regions of Cas A and provide unique measurements of their kinematic and plasma states. From the dominant emission lines, e.g. He-like Si, we derive accurate Doppler shifts in the range -2500 to +4000 km/s; these agree well with transverse-velocity measurements and allow the features to be located in 3D. Plasma diagnostics of these regions indicate temperatures largely around 1 keV with some above 3 keV. Using as well the non-dispersed zeroth-order data, we determine NEI model parameters for the regions which lead to density estimates. Values of n_e ~ 100 /cm^3 are likely the maximum of a range of densities in this X-ray emitting material. The common "oxygen-rich" assumption is coarsely tested by comparing the integrated O VIII line flux and continuum levels. We present high-resolution X-ray spectra from the young supernova remnant Cas A using a 70-ks observation taken by the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS). Line emission, dominated by Si and S ions, is used for high-resolution spectral analysis of many bright, narrow regions of Cas A to examine their kinematics and plasma state. These data allow a 3D reconstruction using the unprecedented X-ray kinematic results: we derive unambiguous Doppler shifts for these selected regions, with values ranging between -2500 and +4000 km/s. Plasma diagnostics of these regions, derived from line ratios of resolved He-like triplet lines and H-like lines of Si, indicate temperatures largely around 1 keV, which we model as O-rich reverse-shocked ejecta. The ionization age also does not vary considerably over these regions of the remnant. The gratings analysis was complemented by the non-dispersed spectra from the same dataset, which provided information on emission measure and elemental abundances for the selected Cas A regions. The derived electron density of X-ray emitting ejecta varies from 20 to 200 cm^{-3}. The measured abundances of Mg, Si, S and Ca are consistent with O being the dominant element in the Cas A plasma. With a diameter of 5 arcmin, Cas A is the largest source observed with the HETGS to date. The Chandra X-ray Observatory is the X-ray component of NASA's Great Observatory Program which includes the recently launched Spitzer Infrared Telescope, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for observations in the visible, and the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) which, after providing years of useful data has reentered the atmosphere. All these facilities provide, or provided, scientific data to the international astronomical community in response to peer-reviewed proposals for their use. The Chandra X-ray Observatory was the result of the efforts of many academic, commercial, and government organizations primarily in the United States but also in Europe. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) manages the Project and provides Project Science; Northrop Grumman Space Technology (NGST -- formerly TRW) served as prime contractor responsible for providing the spacecraft, the telescope, and assembling and testing the Observatory; and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) provides technical support and is responsible for ground operations including the Chandra X-ray Center (CXC). Telescope and instrument teams at SAO, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Pennsylvania State University (PSU), the Space Research Institute of the Netherlands (SRON), the Max-Planck Institut fur extraterrestrische Physik (MPE), and the University of Kiel also provide technical support to the Chandra Project. Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer observations of the supernova remnant 1E0102.2-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud reveal a spectrum dominated by X-ray emission lines from hydrogen-like and helium-like ions of oxygen, neon, magnesium and silicon, with little iron. The dispersed spectrum shows a series of monochromatic images of the source in the light of individual spectral lines. Detailed examination of these dispersed images reveals Doppler shifts within the supernova remnant, indicating bulk matter velocities on the order of 1000 km/s. These bulk velocities suggest an expanding ring-like structure with additional substructure, inclined to the line of sight. A two-dimensional spatial/velocity map of the SNR shows a striking spatial separation of redshifted and blueshifted regions, and indicates a need for further investigation before an adequate 3D model can be found. The radii of the ring-like images of the dispersed spectrum vary with ionization stage, supporting an interpretation of progressive ionization due to passage of the reverse shock through the ejecta. Plasma diagnostics with individual emission lines of oxygen are consistent with an ionizing plasma in the low density limit, and provide temperature and ionization constraints on the plasma. Assuming a pure metal plasma, the mass of oxygen is estimated at ~6 solar masses, consistent with a massive progenitor., Comment: 47 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The HETG can be used to obtain spatially resolved spectra of moderately extended sources. We present preliminary results for two well studied, oxygen rich supernova remnants in the Magellanic clouds, E0102-72 and N132D. The dispersed spectrum of E0102-72 shows images of the remnant in the light of individual emission lines from H-like and He-like ions of O, Mg, Ne and He-like Si with no evidence of Fe. The diameters of the images for various ions, measured in the cross-dispersion direction, increase monotonically with the ionization age for the given ion. This shows in detail the progression of the reverse shock through the expanding stellar ejecta. We see clear evidence for asymmetric Doppler shifts across E0102-72 of ~2000 km/s. These can be modelled approximately by a partially-filled, expanding shell inclined to the line of sight. The dispersed spectrum of N132D is more affected by spatial/spectral overlap but also shows monochromatic images in several strong lines. Preliminary spectra have been extracted for several bright knots. Some regions of oxygen-rich material, presumably stellar ejecta, are clearly identified. The High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) Spectrometer aboard the Chandra X-Ray Observatory was used to observe E0102-72, a ~1000 year old, oxygen rich supernova in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The HETG disperses the image of the remnant into a spectrum of images in the light of individual X-ray emission lines. Doppler shifts in the strongest lines of oxygen and neon reveal bulk motions of up to 2000 km/sec with a complex morphology. The young oxygen-rich supernova remnant E0102-72 in the Small Magellanic Cloud has been observed with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer of Chandra. The high resolution X-ray spectrum reveals images of the remnant in the light of individual emission lines of oxygen, neon, magnesium and silicon. The peak emission region for hydrogen-like ions lies at larger radial distance from the SNR center than the corresponding helium-like ions, suggesting passage of the ejecta through the "reverse shock". E0102-72 is the second brightest X-ray source in the Small Magellanic Cloud and the brightest supernova remnant in the SMC. We observed this SNR for ~140 ksec with the High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The small angular size and high surface brightness make this an excellent target for HETG and we resolve the remnant into individual lines. We observe fluxes from several lines which include O VIII Ly$\alpha$, Ly$\beta$, and O VII along with several lines from Ne X, Ne IX and Mg XII. High resolution spectra of the active binary Capella (G8 III + G1 III) covering the energy range 0.4-8.0 keV (1.5-30 Angstroms) show a large number of emission lines, demonstrating the performance of the HETGS. A preliminary application of plasma diagnostics provides information on coronal temperatures and densities. Lines arising from different elements in a range of ionization states indicate that Capella has plasma with a broad range of temperatures, from log T = 6.3 to 7.2, generally consistent with recent results from observations with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) and the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA). The electron density is determined from He-like O VII lines, giving the value N_e=10^10 cm^-3 at T_e=2*10^6 K; He-like lines formed at higher temperatures give only upper limits to the electron density. The density and emission measure from O VII lines together indicate that the coronal loops are significantly smaller than the stellar radius., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures (1 color) accepted for ApJL
