Medieval ,Devotional ,Sculpture ,Shrine Madonna ,Reception ,Identity - Abstract
This article explores uncertain histories of three fourteenth-century Shrine Madonna statues. It focuses particularly on the unfixedness of these statues' identities, which, already socially determined, loosen over time and become semiotically exposed. All three started out as cult statues, and all subsequently became suspect, inspiring clerical distrust. One Shrine Madonna transformed from a monastic thaumaturgical image into a mutilated puppet in the theater of politico-religious struggle, and then from a forgotten curiosity into an agent of cultural authority. Another Shrine Madonna changed identity through geographical and denominational shifts: it began as an indulgenced performance object, showered with annual gifts, and became a symbol of a Catholic community, its ideology and its values, finally developing into a visually ambiguous memory. The third Shrine Madonna stayed roughly in the same place for centuries, but transformed outwardly, masked and unmasked, glued shut and dressed, undressed and undone, while retaining its perceived agency with hardly any change—until, that is, its recent removal from the church.

My research uses my painting practice as an experimental and investigative tool to test the capacity of practical aesthetics to generate similar or analogous experiences to the non-dualist reception aesthetics of certain key examples of post-Tridentine (1563) Catholic Counter-Reformation devotional imagery, particularly, The Ecstasy of St. Theresa (1647-1652) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and the Incarnation (1596-1600) by El Greco. I apply an interpretative method to the development of Christian imagery within painting in the post-Reformation period and its relationship to the economic system of modern capitalism and the Enlightenment aesthetic of the sublime. My research aims to see what, if any, meanings and experiences, which, I believe, were present in the affective aesthetics of certain Counter-Reformation imagery can, through the contemporary aesthetics of my painting practice, be reconstructed or re-generated again as similar experience to those original pre-Enlightenment non-dualist meanings and experiences. The experience I aim to generate in my paintings is an affective and experiential narrative of presence, - Eliot's 'unity of thought, feeling and action', which I argue is found in the meaning and experience of those key Christian devotional images.

I examine contemporary evangelical Bible studies and devotionals devoted to John Bunyan's 1678 spiritual classic The Pilgrim's Progress. Focusing on treatments of Bunyan's Vanity Fair sequence, I ask whether these resources demonstrate fidelity to the text and to Scripture or whether they are instead examples of bibliolatry. Implications for the design of Bible studies in the ministry of Christian education are offered following theological analysis of the biblical imagination required for such tasks. 8. The Four Sinners: The Relationship Between Humanity and Its Creator - A Verse-by-Verse Devotional Reflection on Psalm 107

- Abstract
The book of Psalms is an essential means of worship to the Christian. Commanded to be sung and studied, God consistently uses the psalms to communicate with His people. His conviction, creativity, and faithful love are emphasized through the writing of each psalmist. This paper studies the varying types of psalms, the manner in which they are constructed, and the required response of the worshiper to the psalms. Psalm 107, known as Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So if found to be titled, is a song of communal response and repentance. one sees that this title implies the lyrics of what can be realized as a modern-day chorus. The psalm is split into six sections, the second through fifth being of similar nature and structure, each describing a manner of sin and ending with a chorus declaring ‘Let them thank the LORD for His steadfast love, for His wondrous works to the children of man!’. The magnificent aspect to these repetitive lyrics is worthy of study as they display the opposing relationship of human sinful instinct and the grace of God.

- Abstract
This Project Portfolio will display my attempt to address the following NPO: To help Young Adults (ages 18-39) recognize the beauty in their lives and friends’ lives and identify where God is working so they can engage in authentic conversations about faith and fulfillment in Jesus. The overall insight that emerged from my research was the desire among Young Adults to understand and articulate their faith from a perspective of desirability. This awareness blossomed in my current ministry setting – as a Young Adult Minister at an established church in the Southern United States. My project is step one of a multi-step process to address the NPO. To address the desire to begin to recognize beauty and desirability in their lives and their faith, I have developed an “EPIC”-styled Advent Devotional Journal that encourages the participants to explore their faith and life story from an “experiential” perspective rather than an “informational” one.

This diploma thesis deals with kitsch as a manipulative tool parasitizing in the Christian environment, at the heart of which are especially emotionally colored and often sentimental themes that directly attack the feelings of the viewer. The main content is also the definition of similarities and differences between sacred and spiritual art, holy pictures and kitsch. The aim of the thesis is to bring the concept of "Christian kitsch", to point out its power and to think about the question of whether Christianity would even be able to exist without kitsch.

Tracing the devotional beliefs and practices of everyday people during the late Middle Ages through documents is tricky, as most were written with other purposes in mind. To make up for this, it is necessary to examine the abundant material culture that survives from this period. By analyzing a variety of finds and comparing them with well-known objects used by the upper classes, it becomes evident that ordinary people shared the same religious views and practices. Both classes were interested in pieces that inspired active devotional and amuletic practice. They were intended to be gazed at and handled, then rested on a tabletop or nailed to a wall. Some folded, some rang, some could be blown through, while others were gazed upon. Lower quality materials and production of pieces had no impact on their ultimate use in the home.

This study explores qawwali from emotional, aesthetic as well as devotional aspects to get its true feel. The purpose is to trace the extent to which qawwali acts as a catalyst for ecstatic or trance-like states of spiritual experience. A multimodal framework for analysis was used to study the common emerging patterns like love of God and His last prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), beatitudes of God and paradox of spiritual or worldly love. The qawwali sung at the three famous shrines of Lahore, Pakistan was the main source of data. To trace its impact, perceptions of devotees were taken into account in the form of 16 case studies. It was found that qawwali's emphatic rhythmical stress patterns repeating God's name stirred devotees' emotions for spiritual self-repositioning. But words fall short to capture these spiritual emotions. Hence, this study only described the emotions supposedly gaining spiritual proximity with God. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"Medieval manuscripts resisted obsolescence. Made by highly specialised craftspeople (scribes, illuminators, book binders) with labour-intensive processes using exclusive and sometimes exotic materials (parchment made from dozens or hundreds of skins, inks and paints made from prized minerals, animals and plants), books were expensive and built to last. They usually outlived their owners. Rather than discard them when they were superseded, book owners found ways to update, amend and upcycle books or book parts. These activities accelerated in the fifteenth century. Most manuscripts made before 1390 were bespoke and made for a particular client, but those made after 1390 (especially books of hours) were increasingly made for an open market, in which the producer was not in direct contact with the buyer. Increased efficiency led to more generic products, which owners were motivated to personalise. It also led to more blank parchment in the book, for example, the backs of inserted miniatures and the blanks ends of textual components. Book buyers of the late fourteenth and throughout the fifteenth century still held onto the old connotations of manuscripts—that they were custom-made luxury items—even when the production had become impersonal. Owners consequently purchased books made for an open market and then personalised them, filling in the blank spaces, and even adding more components later. This would give them an affordable product, but one that still smacked of luxury and met their individual needs. They kept older books in circulation by amending them, attached items to generic books to make them more relevant and valuable, and added new prayers with escalating indulgences as the culture of salvation shifted. Rudy considers ways in which book owners adjusted the contents of their books from the simplest (add a marginal note, sew in a curtain) to the most complex (take the book apart, embellish the components with painted decoration, add more quires of parchment). By making sometimes extreme adjustments, book owners kept their books fashionable and emotionally relevant. This study explores the intersection of codicology and human desire. Rudy shows how increased modularisation of book making led to more standardisation but also to more opportunities for personalisation. She asks: What properties did parchment manuscripts have that printed books lacked? What are the interrelationships among technology, efficiency, skill loss and standardisation? "

- Abstract
This project germinated out of the observation that many evangelical congregations are facing the malaise of a profound lack of true faith formation, which is creating a wide gap between authentic Christ formation and secularization, and is further exacerbated by the genuine blind spot of denial in the minds of Christians that this is problematic. In a distracted and frenzied world, faith formation is becoming less of a priority, which is caused by an inherent bent toward selfish independence. Changing the narrative on these observations would mean Christians prioritize and cultivate their relationship with Jesus Christ, propelling them outwardly towards a selfless interdependence. These observations were made as I peered through the windshield of my ministry context in both a Midwest and West Coast local congregation and farther out into the religious and secular climate of the cultural moment of the years leading up to and through the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. Storied Discipleship: Nine Practices for Jesus-Shaped Living is the plant that is beginning to grow from these observations. It was born out of the desire to help distracted people refocus their attention on matters of faith and help them begin developing new and healthier habits in their spiritual formation process. The nine practices articulate that disciples of Jesus will find themselves living a praying, learning, caring, blessing, celebrating, sharing, resting, simplifying, and tending life. Each part of this project is designed to assist disciples in evaluating the story they are living, to be captivated by and trust the Jesus-story, to live the Jesus-story out in ever-increasing ways, and to share the story with others.

More than a guide for painters, Vicente de Carducho's Diálogos de la pintura has long been recognized to promote painting as a liberal art and to advocate for the creation of an academy of painting in seventeenth-century Madrid. But questions of patriotic belonging and prestige are also at stake in this erudite treatise. In his prologue, Carducho prioritizes his allegiance to his adopted city even while acknowledging his debts to his native Florence. The first part of this article argues that the treatise serves to showcase that allegiance as it participates in a project to make the young political capital a great cultural centre. The second part makes the case for Carducho as a practitioner who understood the debt he owed to the visual culture of his adopted homeland while remaining true to the aesthetic principles of his Florentine training. His late depictions of saints in adoration of the crucifix provide a focus for examining a religious sensibility subtly informed by Spanish devotional literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

16. Praise Under Pressure: How to Cultivate a Worship-Filled Lifestyle Amidst Anxiety

- Abstract
Rates of anxiety are at its highest point in the late Millennial and early Gen-Z population, prompting a rise in mental health awareness. For those practicing the Christian faith, it can be difficult to follow Apostle Paul’s simple command to “not be anxious” (Philippians 4:6). This thesis will conduct a targeted literature review of music and group-counseling-based therapy, as both have proven to positively affect anxiety and stress symptoms. Combining these two methodologies with worship lifestyle principles and counseling exercises, a church-modeled devotional study will be created to encourage believers to cling to faith in God despite rising anxiety. The objective is to provide local churches with materials that can guide individuals through practical steps to worship God amidst anxiety.

Minhāj al-`Ābidīn is Gazzālī's last work. In this work, Gazzālī deals with the moral and spiritual gains that worship will bring about in people, together with the paths and methods on how to ultimately reach paradise. The topics discussed in this work are all related to both the attitude one should adopt towards worship and to the gains that this attitude will bring at the end. Gazzālī penned this work in a way that its readers could grasp it without exerting themselves, and he himself mentions that he wrote a perspicuous work. This work was translated into Ottoman Turkish by Nihānī during the Ottoman era. After this period, this translation became rather popular and several different copies of the work can be found in libraries. This thesis will analyze the work entitled Minhāj al-`Ābidīn, it will reflect on the work's association with Gazzālī, it will also touch on the author and translator, and at the same time, it will have brought to light the text which was translated by Ilyas Nihānī by transcribing it here into Latin. 272

Straipsnyje pirmąkart aptariama dailės marginalijos – masiškai tiražuoti XIX a. pab. – XX a. pr. katalikų religiniai paveikslėliai, jų funkcijos ir reikšmė. Bandoma apibrėžti, ką būtų galima vadinti lietuviškais religiniais paveikslėliais, nagrinėjamos jų ištyrimo, apskaitos problemos ir aktualijos. Pristatoma pagrindinio tuo metu lietuviškų paveikslėlių leidėjo, nepelnytai pamiršto knygnešio, spaudos darbuotojo ir Krokuvos lietuvių studentų šelpėjo Juozapo Angrabaičio (1859–1935) veikla. For the first time, the article discusses the marginalia in the art and writings – catholic devotional images, which were printed en masse in the late 19th – early 20th century, their functions and importance. A high number of remaining small-format lithographies, chromolithographies as well as copper, steel and wood engravings and other printed material is an indicator of the religiosity of our ancestors and an instrument of religious media, religious literacy and the spread of various religious cults. This is an implementation of the respect and recognition of the Saints, which served as a source of ecclesiastical iconography, as an example for those who created images for churches and rural environment (e. g. folk sculptures for memorial monuments). On the other hand, the abundance of pictures reflected the intensity of the devotional industry and trade relations as well as the fashion trends. In addition, pictures have an intimate and personal aspect. Their main function was not only to inspire the believer in prayer, but also as a memory which recalls various occasions or persons. The commemorative printed or handwritten texts of prayers in Lithuanian as well as the description of the First Communion, all kinds of religious events and holidays, donation, remembrance of the deceased, etc. are a reflection of the national literacy and pledge. In the context of the Lithuanian press ban and low literacy, they are important as small monuments of the written language and contrafactions and are attributable to the phenomenon of book smuggling. An attempt is being made in the article to define what may be termed as Lithuanian religious pictures as well as problems of their research and inventorying. Because of the polyvalence of pictures (images, printed texts, records made by hand, different printing techniques), they may be attributed to the works of graphics and small prints. Therefore, it is difficult to establish a united registry. Hence, cooperation between bibliographers and art historians in preparing the registry is in need. On the other hand, the identification of the publisher is challenging. After all, many pictures are imported and reprinted. The activity of the main publisher and distributor of the Lithuanian devotional images at the time, wantonly forgotten book smuggler, print worker and supporter of the Lithuanian students in Cracow, Juozapas Angrabaitis (1859–1935), is presented in the article. An attempt is being made to outline his contribution to the history of Lithuanian culture. In 1893, J. Angrabaitis issued an exclusive catalogue of the devotional images in Tilsit, which in the absence of other archival sources is the main background when investigating the supply of images in Lithuania of that time. An attempt is being made in the article to determine the trade relations of J. Angrabaitis as well as to ascertain the signatures, pseudonyms and acronyms of the printed images.

- Abstract
This Creative Thesis attempts to contemplate one aspect of theological inquiry and puzzlement: the enigma of living between an all-powerful, omniscient Divine—the Cosmic King Who is capable of forming a sun or designing a rose—and the intimate Father-God Who holds our tears in His hand. It is an exploration of the indefinable relationship between fallible human beings and an omniscient and all-powerful, yet intimate God. Its variety of texts, though differing in form, all consider what it means to live in the tension of that paradox. The purpose of this work is not to offer answers to any of the questions raised by this inquiry nor to concoct an impossibly definitive response, but rather to open the door to spiritual inquiry in the hope of growth toward new epiphanies of thought and experience. To accomplish this, this text employs a multifaceted, multi-genre approach designed to contemplate this paradox from a variety of creative angles including essays, poetry, short stories, and trip reports. The document ends with a critical reflection which outlines the literary provenance of these writings and places them in the context of the classical and modern works of devotional literature on whose shoulders they stand.

Les sources contemporaines ainsi que leur interprétation par les historiens et les historiens d’art modernes permettront de mieux comprendre le rôle joué par la pensée chrétienne au sein de ce développement artistique., Examining the writings of Christian humanists, who exercised control over the practice of the arts after the Council of Trent, this paper seeks to understand the development of landscape painting in the Early Modern period. Cardinal Federico Borromeo, the Jesuit Louis Richeome and Jean Calvin, are among those theologians who contributed to this influential Christian literature. We will mainly use the recent historiography to demonstrate the essential role played by Christian thought in the rise of the representation of nature into art. Building on some important studies, we will analyze both pictorial and architectural examples that reflect this Christian influence on the perception of nature. First, we will try to paint a picture of the religious and cultural environment in which the Christian humanists lived and developed their thinking. Our goal is to prove that Christian humanism played an important role in the development of landscape representations during the Counter-Reformation. Contemporary sources as well as their interpretation by modern historians and art historians will help us to better understand the role of Christian thought in this artistic development.

28. Devotional violence and emotional governance in a seventeenth-century French female religious house

- Abstract
Between 1618 and 1632, the prestigious thirteenth-century royal Cistercian Abbey for women at Maubuisson (near Pontoise, northwest of Paris) became a battleground over the use of penitential mortification. Mortification was one of the chief sites of interpersonal politics over governance at the abbey. This essay will examine the place of the emotions in relation to the two divergent trajectories of Catholic reform and spiritual revival evident in this case: those which emphasized the benefits of physical mortification, and those which emphasized a more interior path of approach to God. The emotions were at the centre of debate about what kind of devotional activities posed the greater risk of harm, the physical or the contemplative.

In the present paper, Fèlix Manel Alarcon aims to further improve the knowledge on one of the most popular lifes in Medieval hagiography: that of the Dominican Father Vicent Ferrer. Beyond the popular view that has been transmitted through devotionals and popular tales, Alarcon’s contribution takes into consideration several Medieval and current sources to define the character’s profile around three axes: «Birth and youth», «The preacher», «Saint Vicent Ferrer in our days».

30. Discovering gupta-Vrindavan: Finding selves and places in the storied landscape

- Abstract
This article seeks to be a contribution to the recent bourgeoning of studies in the anthropology of (sacred) spaces, places and landscapes. Ethnographically, it deals with the social topography of Navadvip and Mayapur, vaishnava pilgrimage places in the Nadia district of West Bengal. It analyses the contemporary articulations of the experience and making of a contrasted and consecrated landscape, and its potential in embodying differentiated community identities. It describes the various public faces of Bengal-Vaishnava groups and argues in favour of the inherent relationships between devotional self-experiences and the emotional landscape which is inhabited and constituted simultaneously. It details the cultural geography of Navadvip and Mayapur as embodied in the layout of different temples and ashrams, and the circulating stories establishing their significance. The stories sometimes hunt out lost sites, sometimes legitimise existing ones and, at other times, override all such concerns over specific sites in favour of a passionate engagement with the entire landscape. In every instance among the plural modes of ‘dwelling’ in the mnemonic-fabled sacred space, the vaishnava groups claim to discover the essence of the landscape and thereby assert their multiform practices of self-experiences as authentic representations of the sect. In the end, the article also contrasts the inhabitants’ landscapes and devotional self-experiences with that of the traveller and throws up new questions in the anthropological understandings of places, landscapes, journeys and devotion.

- Abstract
Many Christians have noted Romans 1:20's statement that God is reflected in His creation. As a theater student, I have found this to be true even in how theatrical artists actually execute their craft. Thus, for my senior honors thesis I have decided to further study this connection between the Lord and theater, for which I expect to find more of what I have already found in parallels between the Christian walk and theater arts. For the completion of this thesis, research for theatrical content will include acting and design, and research for biblical content will include the Bible and prominent theologians such as John Piper and John MacArthur. This information will then be organized, analyzed, and elaborated on in regards to the connection between theatre and theology. The result will be a collection of devotionals specifically related to the theatrical artist's craft and work.

- Abstract
In the fifteenth and early sixteenth century, the multiplicity of prints allowed for their widespread circulation. Religious prints were the first type of print to be disseminated. They were popular due to the devotional climate of early Renaissance society. Yet as the print market grew, so too did the tastes of consumers. A new type emerged who viewed the print as an art object. My intent is to view the print as a functional object whose use changed depending on the consumer who purchased it. Printmakers acknowledged the existence of these markets by producing works to appeal to consumers within each. Thus, printmakers like Albrect Dürer acted as artists and entrepreneurs. His Small and Engraved Passion series demonstrate how he created works to interest consumers in both markets. His example calls for the print to be seen less as an act of artistic genius and more as an entrepreneurial endeavor.

Baroque ,devotional ,Stefania Skwarczyńska - Abstract
Rozprawa zawiera opis, analizę i interpretację popularnych w kręgu barokowej literatury religijnej tomików określanych w tytule mianem „nabożeństwo”. Niejednorodna struktura i sylwiczny nieledwie kształt omawianych tekstów stają się naturalnym wyznacznikiem „nabożeństwa jako gatunku samorzutnie i samoistnie ukonstytuowanego w systemie kultury literackiej polskiego baroku. Ta fascynująca złożoność „nabożeństwa” (gatunku) i „zegarka? (odmiany gatunkowej) — zarazem tropu, modlitwy, hymnu, litanii...
