Fossil fuel use drives greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, highlighting the need for alternatives like biomass-derived syngas. Syngas, mainly H 2 and CO, is produced via biomass gasification and offers a solution to environmental challenges. Syngas fermentation through the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway yields valuable chemicals under mild conditions. However, challenges in scaling up persist due to issues like unpredictable syngas composition and microbial fermentation contamination. This review covers advancements in genetic tools and metabolic engineering to expand product range, highlighting crucial enabling technologies that expedite strain development for acetogens and other non-model organisms. Forests serve as a sink and source of carbon and play a substantial role in regional and global carbon cycling. The Himalayan forests act as climate regulators of the Hindukush region, which is experiencing climate change at a high pace, and a proper understanding of these systems is necessary to mitigate this problem. We hypothesize that the variance of abiotic factors and vegetation will influence the carbon sink and source function of the different forest types of the Himalayas. Carbon sequestration was computed from the increment of carbon stocks estimated allometrically using Forest Survey of India equations, and soil CO 2 flux was determined by the alkali absorption method. The carbon sequestration rate and CO 2 flux by the different forests exhibited a negative relation. The carbon sequestration rate was highest with minimum emission in the temperate forest, while the tropical forest recorded the least sequestration and maximum carbon flux rate. The Pearson correlation test between carbon sequestration and tree species richness and diversity revealed a positive-significant influence but negative relation with climatic factors. An analysis of variance indicated significant seasonal differences between the rate of soil carbon emissions due to variations in the forest. A multivariate regression analysis of the monthly soil CO 2 emission rate shows high variability (85%) due to fluctuations of climatic variables in the Eastern Himalayan forests. Results of the present study revealed that the carbon sink and source function of forests respond to changes in forest types, climatic variables, and edaphic factors. Tree species and soil nutrient content influenced carbon sequestration, while shifts in climatic factors influenced soil CO 2 emission rate. Increased temperature and rainfall may further change the soil quality by enhancing soil CO 2 emission and reducing soil organic carbon, thereby impacting this region's carbon sink and source function. As a part of the monitoring practice of the lone natural habitat of the endemic and endangered Rucervus eldii eldii McClelland or Sangai, the paper reports sediment and water characteristics of Keibul Lamjao National Park-the only floating national park of the world in Manipur, Indo Burma hotspot. The water analysis showed low pH (5.69 ± 0.16), high electrical conductivity (342 ± 13.01 μS m -1 ), high turbidity (33.2 ± 9.407 NTU), and high phosphate concentrations (0.92 ± 0.11 mg L -1 ) during the study period. The water quality index values calculated indicate that the park water during post-monsoon season is unfit for drinking. Thus, the degrading water quality poses a serious risk to the health of the deer and other species in the park. At present, Sangai in its natural habitat is threatened by pollution, encroachment, phoomdi thickness reduction, and inbreeding depression. To address the problem of inbreeding, Pumlen pat is considered as a second suitable natural habitat for the deer reintroduction program. During the study, water characteristics of the wetland showed similar characteristics as KLNP, i.e., low pH (5.86 ± 0.30), high electrical conductivity (377.6 ± 5.55 μS m -1 ), high turbidity (32.36 ± 4.91 NTU), and high phosphate concentrations (0.79 ± 0.14 mg L -1 ). Likewise, sediments showed high TP accumulation that ranged from 197.03 ± 0.75 to 332.88 ± 0.99 mg kg -1 for KLNP and 245.18 ± 0.85 to 351.48 ± 0.71 mg kg -1 for Pumlen pat, respectively. Both, the lone natural habitat and the proposed habitat showed deteriorating water quality. As such, continuous monitoring of KLNP and Pumlen pat water and sediment quality should be a priority during the management practices to protect the endangered deer and health of the habitats for long-term conservation., (© 2023. Isolation of the methanol extract of Solanum xanthocarpum resulted in the isolation and characterization of carpesterol (1) and four steroidal glycosides (2, 3, 4, and 5). The structures of these compounds were established by spectroscopic analysis. The antifungal activity of the steroidal compounds extracted from the fruits of S. xanthocarpum was investigated against Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma viride. The isolated compounds 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 exhibited inhibitory effects on the radial growth of A. niger and Trichoderma viride.
