Abstract

Indian nuclear energy program adopts the closed fuel cycle, which involves reprocessing of the spent fuel and offers an option for the recovery of valuables from radioactive waste. Some of the useful isotopes present in radioactive wastes, of societal and industrial applications, are 137Cs, 90Sr, Platinum Groups Metals (PGMs: Pd, Rh, and Ru), 238Pu, 241Am, etc. Among PGMs, Ru is used in electrical, electrochemical industries and radioactive isotope of Ru is being applied for the treatment of eye cancer. In the present work, we are focusing on the pre-concentration of Ru from aqueous media by sorption method. Sorption studies were carried out using inactive Ru as well as its radiotracers. EDXRF, γ-ray spectrometry and spectrophotometry were used as the tools for monitoring the sorption processes. For preliminary studies, polyaniline and manganese dioxide were used as sorbents. The sorption was found to be better using polyaniline. For the ease of separation process, composite polymers of aniline with tetraethoxysilane were synthesized and used. The composites were characterized using SEM-EDS, FTIR and elemental analysis techniques. Sorption studies with and without presence of Zr were done with the aim of separation of radioactive Ru from irradiated Zr alloy and recovery of Ru. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. Establishment of an efficient in vitro propagation system for Holostemma annulare (Roxb.) K. Schum. using SH medium

Abstract

Holostemma annulare (Roxb.) K. Schum. (Asclepiadaceae) is an important medicinal herb and its root tubers are an important ingredient of the drug ‘jivanti’. Here, a more reliable procedure of in vitro propagation of the plant is discussed using SH nutrient medium formulation that facilitates the in vitro multiplication and establishment without callusing from the basal region of shoots that was prominent in the earlier protocols. Surface sterilization of the nodal explants with 10% (v/v) NaOCl for 12 minutes followed by 0.1% (w/v) HgCl2 for 8 minutes exhibited 90% shooting response. The in vitro initiated shoots subcultured to SH medium fortified with 2.0 mgl-1 BA in combination with 0.5 mgl-1 Kinetin and 1.0 mgl-1 IBA produced maximum 7.16±0.15 shoots. Better root induction of the in vitro raised shoots was noticed in SH medium augmented with 0.01 mgl-1 NAA that induced a mean number of 5.65±0.23 thin, long, white coloured roots. The plantlets were transferred to polythene bags containing river sand:garden soil (1:1) for acclimatization, further transplanted in garden soil and river sand mixture (3:1) in earthern pots in the greenhouse and subsequently to the field got established at 80% efficiency. They produced tuberous roots after 4 months of field establishment. Thus, the study standardized an improved system of in vitro propagation of H. annulare using SH medium and this protocol can be extended for long-term conservation methods such as cryoconservation and also for the in vitro production of bioactive metabolites.

Contains fulltext : 57294.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), Breakthrough pain (BKP) is a transitory flare of pain that occurs on a background of relatively well controlled baseline pain. Previous surveys have found that BKP is highly prevalent among patients with cancer pain and predicts more severe pain, pain-related distress and functional impairment, and relatively poor quality of life. An international group of investigators assembled by a task force of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) evaluated the prevalence and characteristics of BKP as part of a prospective, cross-sectional survey of cancer pain. Fifty-eight clinicians in 24 countries evaluated a total of 1095 patients with cancer pain using patient-rated items from the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and observer-rated measures. The observer-rated information included demographic and tumor-related data, the occurrence of BKP, and responses on checklists of pain syndromes and pathophysiologies. The clinicians reported BKP in 64.8% of patients. Physicians from English-speaking countries were significantly more likely to report BKP than other physicians. BKP was associated with higher pain scores and functional interference on the BPI. Multivariate analysis showed an independent association of BKP with the presence of more than one pain, a vertebral pain syndrome, pain due to plexopathy, and English-speaking country. These data confirm the high prevalence of BKP, its association with more severe pain and functional impairment, and its relationship to specific cancer pain syndromes. Further studies are needed to characterize subtypes of BKP. The uneven distribution of BKP reporting across pain specialists from different countries suggests that more standardized methods for diagnosing BKP are needed.

Abstract

Microencapsulation ofBeauveria bassiana(Bb) conidia with sodium humate (SH) was undertaken successfully through spray drying at a high inlet air temperature of 175°C with corresponding outlet air temperature of 86.5 ± 1.3°C using 0.2% SH. The obtained product was a free-flowing, dark-brown powder containing microcapsules of Bb conidia coated with sodium humate (Bb-SH). These microcapsules measured 2.47–3.57 µm and possessed an uneven, fluffy surface. The colony-forming units (CFU) of Bb-SH microcapsules spray-dried at 175°C were 21.54LCFUg−1, on par with 21.59LCFUg−1for Bb conidial powder not subjected to spray drying. Bb-SH microcapsules resulted in a high mortality of 93.0% against six-day-oldHelicoverpa armigeralarvae within five days after treatment. Bb-SH microcapsules readily dispersed in water, releasing sodium humate from the conidial surface. Germination of conidia was not affected by sodium humate as visualized by scanning electron microscopy of the cuticular surface of treated larvae. Bb-SH microcapsules showed good viability (21.11LCFUg−1) at the end of six months of storage at room temperature (∼30°). Abstract

This work focuses on the selective separation of Co from Zr and Nb, for the decontamination of pressure tubes from pressurized heavy water reactor. Initial experiments were carried out using the respective radiotracers. These laboratory scale studies explore the feasibility of using oxalic acid, a benign complexing medium, for the Zr–Nb matrix, with targeted sorption of trace levels of 60Co on cation exchange membranes. Sorption of Co(II) on the membrane followed pseudo second order kinetics and the equilibrium capacity was 1.89 meq g-1. Oxalic acid concentration was a trade-off between the loading of matrix elements and the % sorption of Co(II). Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry was used for monitoring the sorption of Co on the membrane from inactive sample solutions. Sorption improved the EDXRF detection limits for Co from 50 μg in solution to 1.3 μg on the membrane, where the total concentration of the matrix elements in solution was 50 g L-1. Abstract

Abstract: A reactive powder of La0.84Sr0.16MnO3 is synthesized as a cathode material for solid oxide fuel cells by a citrate–nitrate auto-ignition process and characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and electrical conductivity measurements. The effect of starting metal ion concentration in the precursor solution on the properties of the final oxide is studied and correlated through particle size analyses, sintering studies and microstructural examination. Sintered La0.84Sr0.16MnO3 ceramics of relative density around 93% can be fabricated by preferably keeping the metal ion concentration in the precursor to less than 0.8M, whereas to make porous ceramics (relative densities of 75–80%) a higher metal ion concentration is preferred. At 1000°C, the 93% dense ceramics exhibit electrical conductivities of around 168–169Scm−1 and the porous ceramics of around 136–146Scm−1. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
