Abstract This study utilized arterial spin labeling-magnetic resonance imaging (ASL-MRI) to explore the developmental trajectory of brain activity associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Pulsed arterial spin labeling (ASL) data were acquired from 157 children with ADHD and 109 children in a control group, all aged 6–12 years old. Participants were categorized into the age groups of 6–7, 8–9, and 10–12, after which comparisons were performed between each age group for ASL analysis of cerebral blood flow (CBF). In total, the ADHD group exhibited significantly lower CBF in the left superior temporal gyrus and right middle frontal gyrus regions than the control group. Further analysis revealed: (1) The comparison between the ADHD group (N = 70) aged 6–7 and the age-matched control group (N = 33) showed no statistically significant difference between. (2) However, compared with the control group aged 8–9 (N = 39), the ADHD group of the same age (N = 53) showed significantly lower CBF in the left postcentral gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus regions. (3) Further, the ADHD group aged 10–12 (N = 34) demonstrated significantly lower CBF in the left superior occipital region than the age-matched control group (N = 37). These age-specific differences suggest variations in ADHD-related domains during brain development post age 6–7.

Rapid and implicit letter‐to‐sound conversion is a remarkable ability that develops during school years, which is reflected in the left lateralization of the print‐tuned N170 event‐related potential. Previous studies have shown that elementary school children learning alphabetic scripts elicit bilateral N170, which reflects their underdeveloped phonological conversion processing. However, children learning Japanese hiragana, which has better letter–sound correspondence compared with alphabetic scripts, may acquire the automatic phonological conversion in the early stages of learning to read. To test this notion, we investigated the developmental change of the print‐tuned N170 by comparing 4th–6th grade elementary school children with college students. Participants were required to detect infrequent blue stimuli among a series of black‐colored hiragana words, nonwords, and foreign letter strings. College students showed typical left‐lateralized N170. In contrast, children elicited bilateral N170 for print stimuli, indicating that the implicit phonological conversion was still not established. Source monitoring (SM), the ability to connect memories to specific sources accurately, and to distinguish between reference points for information, is essential in mediating children's various social and cognitive functions. The accuracy of SM can significantly affect a child's basic knowledge and assumptions about the world. This review summarizes the scientific literature concerning child SM based on the findings of applied and experimental studies. Specifically, we cover the literature on children's SM training, targeting strategies, and training methods that influence the accuracy of children's SM. Based on the source-monitoring framework, we introduce children's SM performance, with an inherent focus on the underlying mechanisms. Moreover, the development and evaluation of a child's SM ability are discussed. Finally, we examine studies on children's SM skill training in terms of applicability, thus revealing challenges and new directions for follow-up studies. We introduce a 3D framework — consisting of levels of analysis (individual vs. collective); sources of change (experimental, ontogenetic, and cultural); and timescales (short vs. long term) — to systematize and integrate complementary but previously siloed lines of research on implicit attitude change. Contrary to early theories, the evidence is clear that implicit attitudes can change, both at the level of individuals and collectives, and both in the short and long term. Using the 3D framework, we identify critical gaps in existing knowledge, especially in areas that cross traditional field boundaries and methodological approaches, such as the study of long-term change at the individual level and short-term change at the collective level. A central priority will be to understand the role of person-by-situation interactions in producing long-term change within individuals. We highlight methods that may help bridge across dimensions of the 3D framework, such as agent-based modeling and network science. According to early theories, implicit (automatic) social attitudes are difficult if not impossible to change. Although this view has recently been challenged by research relying on experimental, developmental, and cultural approaches, relevant work remains siloed across research communities. As such, the time is ripe to systematize and integrate disparate (and seemingly contradictory) findings and to identify gaps in existing knowledge. To this end, we introduce a 3D framework classifying research on implicit attitude change by levels of analysis (individual vs. collective), sources of change (experimental, ontogenetic, and cultural), and timescales (short term vs. long term). This 3D framework highlights where evidence for implicit attitude change is more versus less well established and pinpoints directions for future research, including at the intersection of fields. The cognitive reflection test (CRT) is a short measure of a person's ability to resist intuitive response tendencies, and to produce normatively correct responses that are assumed to be based on effortful, analytic thinking. A remarkable characteristic of the CRT is that although the questions are open-ended, for each item, the vast majority of people either produce a correct, analytic response or a typical incorrect (i.e., intuitive) response. This unique feature of the CRT makes it possible to investigate the question of whether autistic and neurotypical people share the same intuitions. We report a study that included adolescents and young adults. In both age groups, autistic and neurotypical participants were matched on age, gender, cognitive ability, and educational background. In line with previous findings, the results showed an age-related increase in analytic responding on the CRT, and a decrease in intuitive responding. Crucially, the proportion of both intuitive and analytic responses across autistic and neurotypical participants was identical in both age groups. The current results are in contrast with claims that autistic individuals have an increased tendency toward an analytic/rational type of processing, which is commonly attributed to an impairment within their intuitive reasoning mechanisms. Despite extensive discussions on interpreter advantages in nonverbal abilities/skills, the advantage in coordination remains underexplored, with little evidence from interpreting students across different training stages. To fill the gap, the present study conducted two experiments with the Psychological Refractory Period dual-task consisting of two discrimination tasks presented either alone or together. Smaller dual-task costs in Task 1 and/or Task 2 are considered indices for better coordination (with smaller costs restricted to Task 2 further suggesting better bottleneck coordination). Experiment 1, focusing on the intermediate training stage, revealed a bottleneck coordination advantage for interpreting students over controls, which differs from the task instantiation and/or bottleneck access advantage found for professional interpreters in Strobach et al. (2015). Experiment 2, focusing on the beginning stage, revealed no group differences between controls and interpreting students with less/more training (Experiment 2a/2b respectively), suggesting no evidence for an interpreter advantage in coordination. Astrocytes play diverse roles in the central nervous system (CNS) in both physiological and pathological conditions. Previous studies have identified many markers of astrocytes to analyze their complicated roles. Recently, closure of the critical period by mature astrocytes has been revealed, and the need for finding mature astrocyte-specific markers has been growing. We previously found that Ethanolamine phosphate phospholyase (Etnppl) was almost not expressed in the developing neonatal spinal cord, and its expression level slightly decreased after pyramidotomy in adult mice, which showed weak axonal sprouting, suggesting that its expression level negatively correlates with axonal elongation. Although the expression of Etnppl in astrocytes in adult is known, its utility as an astrocytic marker has not yet been investigated in detail. Here, we showed that Etnppl was selectively expressed in astrocytes in adult. Re-analyses using published RNA-sequencing datasets revealed changes in Etnppl expression in spinal cord injury, stroke, or systemic inflammation models. We produced high-quality monoclonal antibodies against ETNPPL and characterized ETNPPL localization in neonatal and adult mice. Expression of ETNPPL was very weak in neonatal mice, except in the ventricular and subventricular zones, and it was heterogeneously expressed in adult mice, with the highest expression in the cerebellum, olfactory bulb, and hypothalamus and the lowest in white matter. Subcellular localization of ETNPPL was dominant in the nuclei with weak expression in the cytosol in the minor population. Using the antibody, astrocytes in adult were selectively labeled in the cerebral cortex or spinal cord, and changes in astrocytes were detected in the spinal cord after pyramidotomy. ETNPPL is expressed in a subset of Gjb6C astrocytes in the spinal cord. The monoclonal antibodies we created, as well as fundamental knowledge characterized in this study, will be valuable resources in the scientific community and will expand our understanding of astrocytes and their complicated responses in many pathological conditions in future analyses. Although gains and losses are an integral part of human development, the experience of change and readjustment that often comes withmajor life events may be particularly influential for an individual's subjective aging experience and awareness of age-related change (AARC). Thus, this study focused on the role of life events in the domains of family and health for an individual's awareness of age-related gains and losses. Specifically, we differentiated between the experience of specific life events (e.g., entering a new romantic relationship; hospital stay) and the cumulative experience of multiple life events. Furthermore, we differentiated between life events experienced at an expected time in life and life events experienced relatively early or relatively late compared to established social norms. Data came from the Innovation Sample of the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP-IS) and consisted of 1,612 participants aged 16 to 93 years (M = 54.1; SD = 18.2). Life events were assessed annually and retrospectively for the last 2 years. Propensity score matching provided evidence for an association of specific family life events and a higher awareness of age-related gains, as well as specific health life events and a higher awareness of age-related losses. Results furthermore indicated that the cumulative experience of family life events was associated with a higher awareness of age-related gains. Conversely, the cumulative experience of health events was associated with higher awareness of both age-related losses and age-related gains. Moreover, it was not only life events happening at an expected age, but also those happening relatively early and particularly those happening late in life, which were associated with AARC. Atypical sensory processing (SP) is a diagnostic criterion of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known about its course during development. In this exploratory longitudinal study, we aimed to investigate the course of SP among children with ASD and identify clinical variables associated with changes. We used a subsample of 51 children with confirmed ASD, aged from 3 to 10 years, recruited from the ELENA cohort. SP was assessed using the Sensory Profile questionnaire at baseline and three years later. Our preliminary results highlight the heterogeneity of the evolution of SP during the children's development and the existence of three subgroups based on the course of SP (improvement, stable, and worsening). In addition, the children's adaptive skills and maladaptive behaviors were related to the course of SP. These results could be confirmed in future studies with a larger sample size using a longitudinal approach to capture individual variability in SP. In addition, our results highlight the importance of accounting for temporal changes in the sensory needs of individuals with ASD in clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Elucidating developmental changes in the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is important to support individuals with ASD. However, no report has clarified the developmental changes in attention to social information for a broad age range. The aim of this study was to investigate the developmental changes in attention to social information from early childhood to adolescence in individuals with ASD and typically developed (TD) children. Methods We recruited children with ASD (n = 83) and TD participants (n = 307) between 2 and 18 years of age. Using the all-in-one-eye-tracking system, Gazefinder, we measured the percentage fixation time allocated to areas of interest (AoIs) depicted in movies (the eyes and mouth in movies of a human face with/without mouth motion, upright and inverted biological motion in movies showing these stimuli simultaneously, people and geometry in preference paradigm movies showing these stimuli simultaneously, and objects with/without finger-pointing in a movie showing a woman pointing toward an object). We conducted a three-way analysis of variance, 2 (diagnosis: ASD and TD) by 2 (sex: male and female) by 3 (age group: 0–5, 6–11, and 12–18 years) and locally weighted the scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) regression curve on each AoI. Results In the face stimuli, the percentage fixation time to the eye region for the TD group increased with age, whereas the one for the ASD group did not. In the ASD group, the LOESS curves of the gaze ratios at the eye region increased up to approximately 10 years of age and thereafter tended to decrease. For the percentage fixation time to the people region in the preference paradigm, the ASD group gazed more briefly at people than did the TD group. Limitations It is possible that due to the cross-sectional design, the degree of severity and of social interest might have differed according to the subjects’ age. Conclusions There may be qualitative differences in abnormal eye contact in ASD between individuals in early childhood and those older than 10 years.

ABSTRACT: Zinc (Zn) deposition in egg yolk is essential for the rapid growth and complete development of the avian embryo. Thus, it is crucial to obtain maximal Zn mobilization at an appropriate time during development in favor of the survival of avian embryos. The aim of this study was to study the developmental change of Zn mobilization and gene expression related to key Zn transport proteins between the yolk sac membrane and embryonic liver from the incubation d 17 (E17) to d 32 (E32) during duck embryonic developing. The weights of duck embryo, embryo without yolk sac, and embryonic liver increased as well as the yolk sac weight decreased linearly (P < 0.0001) when incubation day increased. The Zn concentration in the yolk sac did not change from E17 to E29 and only declined significantly from E29 to E32 of duck embryos, while hepatic Zn level decreased linearly as with the increased incubation time (P < 0.01). When the incubation day increased, the decreased Zn amount in the yolk sac and the increased Zn amount in the embryonic liver were observed (P < 0.0001). The calculated transfer-out rate of Zn in the yolk sac and transfer-in rate of Zn in livers were both increased from E23-26 to E29-32 (P < 0.01). Among E17, E23 and E29, the solute carrier family 39 member (ZIP) of ZIP10, ZIP13, and ZIP14 genes mRNA expressions were increased in yolk sac membrane but were decreased in the embryonic liver, while metallothionein 1 mRNA expression was increased both in the yolk sac membrane and liver (P < 0.05). In conclusion, yolk sac membrane and embryonic liver tissues displayed the similar developmental patterns of Zn mobilization and metallothionein 1 mRNA expression from E17 to E32 during duck embryonic developing. The appropriate time of the maximal rate of Zn mobilization were observed between E29 and E32 of duck embryo, associated with the significant changes of gene expression related to some key Zn transport proteins on E29 in yolk sac membrane and liver tissues.

The National Institute of Mental Health's Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework has prompted a paradigm shift from categorical psychiatric disorders to considering multiple levels of vulnerability for probabilistic risk of disorder. However, the lack of neurodevelopmentally based tools for clinical decision making has limited the real-world impact of the RDoC. Integration with developmental psychopathology principles and statistical methods actualize the clinical implementation of RDoC to inform neurodevelopmental risk. In this conceptual paper, we introduce the probabilistic mental health risk calculator as an innovation for such translation and lay out a research agenda for generating an RDoC- and developmentally informed paradigm that could be applied to predict a range of developmental psychopathologies from early childhood to young adulthood. We discuss methods that weigh the incremental utility for prediction based on intensity and burden of assessment, the addition of developmental change patterns, considerations for assessing outcomes, and integrative data approaches. Throughout, we illustrate the risk calculator approach with different neurodevelopmental pathways and phenotypes. Finally, we discuss real-world implementation of these methods for improving early identification and prevention of developmental psychopathology. We propose that mental health risk calculators can build a needed bridge between the RDoC multiple units of analysis and developmental science. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The normative transition to formal schooling confronts children with social challenges but also opportunities. Longitudinal research on how school entry impacts children’s family and friend-ship relationships is scarce. This study investigated social relationship qualities with parents, siblings, and friends among 1110 children (49.9% female) from the prospective, population-based Bavarian Longitudinal Study at 6 years (before school entry) and 8 years using a forced-choice card-sorting task. Multivariate analyses of variance revealed significant effects of age (i.e., school entry) on social relationship qualities with mothers (Pillai’s Trace (PT) = 0.28, F(9, 1101) = 47.73, p < 0.001), fathers (PT = 0.14, F(9, 1101) = 19.47, p < 0.001), siblings (PT = 0.27, F(9, 1101) = 46.14, p < 0.001), and friends (PT = 0.21, F(9, 1101) = 32.57, p < 0.001). On average, children reported higher levels of parental comfort after school entry. Companionable qualities increased in relationships with friends, whereas sibling relationships became more conflictual from preschool to early school age. Findings provide unique insights into how social relationships develop from preschool to early school age, supporting evidence of the growing importance of friends. ABSTRACT: Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), a tumor suppressor gene, functions in antiviral innate immunity and regulates the development and function of T cells and B cells. However, limited information about PTEN is available in poultry. In the present study, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry staining were used to study the tissue distribution and developmental changes of PTEN in the main immune organs of chicken. The effects of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) infection on PTEN mRNA expression in the bursa of Fabricius (BF) of chickens were also investigated. The results are as follows. 1) The order of PTEN mRNA expression levels at the 18th d of hatching (E18) was: muscle and immune organs (spleen and thymus) > visceral organs (heart, lung, kidney, and liver) > hypothalamus and digestive tracts (duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, proventriculus, BF [originates from cloaca], and cecum tonsil [locates at the lamina propria of cecum]). However, at the 15th d of raising (D15), the PTEN mRNA expression in the heart was the highest among all the tissues, followed by those in the liver, proventriculus, and kidney. The PTEN mRNA expression levels in the rest tissues were very low and were only 1.20 to 19.47% as much as that in the heart (P < 0.05). 2) The changes in the expression of PTEN mRNA in the BF, spleen, and thymus from E15 to D15 had no obvious regularity. PTEN-immunopositive (PTEN-ip) cells in the BF were distributed in epithelium mucosa, bursal follicles and interfollicles before hatching, but only in bursal follicles after hatching. PTEN-ip cells in the spleen were expressed in the periarterial lymphatic sheath from E18 to D15. Most of PTEN-ip cells distributed in the thymic medulla and only a few distributed in the thymic cortex during the whole experiment. 3) Chicken with IBDV infection had a remarkable decrease in PTEN mRNA expression from 1 d postinfection (dpi) to 7 dpi. Although PTEN mRNA level was reversed at 7 dpi, it was still significantly lower than that at 0 dpi (P < 0.05). These findings suggest that the PTEN of chicken might play important roles in the development of embryos and T/B lymphocytes, and the downregulation of PTEN in chickens infected with IBDV might be a mechanism of IBDV evasion from host immunity. Strategies designed to restore PTEN expression may be a therapy for preventing chickens from IBDV infection.

Little is known about the developmental course of informant discrepancies in adolescent aggressive behavior problems, though whether aggression increases or decreases over time depends on reporter. Evaluating discrepancies longitudinally can uncover patterns of agreement/disagreement between reporters across time and determine contexts that give rise to these differences. This study addresses longitudinal informant discrepancies by examining parent-report and adolescent report of adolescent aggressive behavior problems over time and further investigates possible contextual factors related to the longitudinal discrepancy. Five-waves (from age 11.5 to 15) of multi-informant data from the PROSPER project (N = 977; 52% female; 87% Caucasian) were used to test longitudinal change in informant discrepancies between mother-, father-, and adolescent-reported aggressive behavior problems. Results showed that parents reported more aggression than their adolescents at age 11.5 and that the discrepancy at first converged over time before diverging. By age 15, adolescents reported more aggression than their parents. Parental hostility, family status, and adolescent gender predicted change in informant discrepancies. Practical and developmental implications are discussed for assessing and determining accurate change in adolescent aggressive behavior problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mitochondrial bioenergetic processes are fundamental to development, stress responses, and health. Caenorhabditis elegans is widely used to study developmental biology, mitochondrial disease, and mitochondrial toxicity. Oxidative phosphorylation generally increases during development in many species, and genetic and environmental factors may alter this normal trajectory. Altered mitochondrial function during development can lead to both drastic, short-term responses including arrested development and death, and subtle consequences that may persist throughout life and into subsequent generations. Understanding normal and altered developmental mitochondrial biology in C. elegans is currently constrained by incomplete and conflicting reports on how mitochondrial bioenergetic parameters change during development in this species. We used a Seahorse XFe24 Extracellular Flux (XF) Analyzer to carry out a comprehensive analysis of mitochondrial and non-mitochondrial oxygen consumption rates (OCR) throughout larval development in C. elegans . We optimized and describe conditions for analysis of basal OCR, basal mitochondrial OCR, ATP-linked OCR, spare and maximal respiratory capacity, proton leak, and non-mitochondrial OCR. A key consideration is normalization, and we present and discuss results as normalized per individual worm, protein content, worm volume, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) count, nuclear DNA (ncDNA) count, and mtDNA:ncDNA ratio. Which normalization process is best depends on the question being asked, and differences in normalization explain some of the discrepancies in previously reported developmental changes in OCR in C. elegans . Broadly, when normalized to worm number, our results agree with previous reports in showing dramatic increases in OCR throughout development. However, when normalized to total protein, worm volume, or ncDNA or mtDNA count, after a significant 2-3-fold increase from L1 to L2 stages, we found small or no changes in most OCR parameters from the L2 to the L4 stage, other than a marginal increase at L3 in spare and maximal respiratory capacity. Overall, our results indicate an earlier cellular shift to oxidative metabolism than suggested in most previous literature.

Live social interaction is the dominant form of human social activity, but it remains unclear if brain processing of live interactive social stimuli differs substantially from processing of non-interactive social stimuli, mainly because of technical difficulties measuring brain activity during natural social interactions. This distinction is particularly important during infancy considering the importance of real-life interactions for various forms of learning. To assess the impact of live social interaction accompanied by ostensive social signals on infant cortical processing, the present study measured the cortical activities of 6–8-month-old and 10−12-month-old infants using functional near-infrared spectroscopy under contingent and non-contingent conditions (appropriately timed versus delayed responsiveness). We found greater activation over the right temporoparietal junction region in response to contingent interactions relative to non-contingent interactions in 6–8-month-old and 10–12-month-old infants. Our study indicates a critical role of contingent responsiveness for differential processing of live interactive social stimuli.

Possible age-related differences in Phonemic Fluency Test (PFT) and Semantic Fluency Test (SFT) performance were examined by using longitudinal data of healthy older adults. The performance trajectories of 81 older adults in the 2 tests were analyzed for 11 years, from 65 to 75 years of age, via individually calculated linear regression coefficients. The results indicated that the PFT and SFT performance showed an age-related decline. However, the declining slope of the SFT was steeper than that of the PFT performance. These findings correspond with those of previous cross-sectional studies and suggest a future need to examine neurobiological substrates underlying the two domains of verbal fluency abilities. Questions: Quantifying tree species persistence through recurrent disturbances is of crucial importance for understanding forest dynamics in typhoon‐prone regions. We ask the following: (a) What are the major determinants of dominant tree survival in frequently typhoon‐disturbed forests? (b) Are survival determinants different between small and large trees? Location: A subtropical old‐growth forest located in Fushan, Taiwan (24°45′34″N, 121°33′58″E), with frequent typhoon disturbances. Methods: Data were from three consecutive censuses of a 25‐ha permanent forest plot that censused trees ≥1 cm in diameter every five years. The survival of three dominant tree species was modeled using generalized additive model and boosted trees with abiotic and biotic predictors. We evaluated model performance using validation data obtained from the two available census intervals. Results: Model validations showed that multi‐stemming and tree size enhanced the survival of large and small trees, respectively. For the most dominant species, multi‐stemming had a consistently positive effect on survival irrespective of diameter classes. Abiotic factors and conspecific density had little effect on tree survival. Furthermore, evaluating model performance based on the data used in the model construction (i.e., training data) overestimated the predictive ability of survival models. Conclusions: We showed that the survival determinants for the three most dominant species at Fushan changed from tree size for small trees to multi‐stemming for large trees. The results suggest that the dominant species in this frequently typhoon‐disturbed forest have the stature and architectural traits to persist, and thereby maintain their dominance and shape the forest physiognomy. Background: Elucidating developmental changes in the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is important to support individuals with ASD. However, no report has clarified the developmental changes in attention to social information for a broad age range. The aim of this study was to investigate the developmental changes in attention to social information from early childhood to adolescence in individuals with ASD and typically developed (TD) children. Methods: We recruited children with ASD (n = 83) and TD participants (n = 307) between 2 and 18 years of age. Using the all-in-one-eye-tracking system, Gazefinder, we measured the percentage fixation time allocated to areas of interest (AoIs) depicted in movies (the eyes and mouth in movies of a human face with/without mouth motion, upright and inverted biological motion in movies showing these stimuli simultaneously, people and geometry in preference paradigm movies showing these stimuli simultaneously, and objects with/without finger-pointing in a movie showing a woman pointing toward an object). We conducted a three-way analysis of variance, 2 (diagnosis: ASD and TD) by 2 (sex: male and female) by 3 (age group: 0–5, 6–11, and 12–18 years) and locally weighted the scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) regression curve on each AoI. Results: In the face stimuli, the percentage fixation time to the eye region for the TD group increased with age, whereas the one for the ASD group did not. In the ASD group, the LOESS curves of the gaze ratios at the eye region increased up to approximately 10 years of age and thereafter tended to decrease. For the percentage fixation time to the people region in the preference paradigm, the ASD group gazed more briefly at people than did the TD group. Limitations: It is possible that due to the cross-sectional design, the degree of severity and of social interest might have differed according to the subjects' age. Background: Premature infants have a high concentration of conjugated bilirubin in their blood, although they have a poor glucuronide conjugation of bilirubin. This may be due to developmental changes in the function of adenosine triphosphate binding cassette subfamily C member 2, which is involved in the cellular export of conjugated bilirubin. In the present study, we examined the developmental changes in the urinary coproporphyrin I/(urinary coproporphyrin I+ urinary coproporphyrin III) ratio (UCP (I/ [I + III])), a known biomarker for adenosine triphosphate binding cassette subfamily C member 2 function, in premature infants. Method: Twenty‐one premature infants born between 25 and 32 weeks of gestation were included in the study. Urine samples were collected within 24 h of birth, and at 1 week and 3–4 weeks after birth. The samples were analyzed by high‐performance liquid chromatography to calculate UCP (I/ [I + III]) to examine its association with postnatal age and corrected gestational age. Subjects were excluded if they had liver dysfunction, cholestasis, urinary tract infection, or chromosomal abnormalities. Results: The average UCP (I/ [I + III]) within 24 h of birth, at 1 week, and at 3–4 weeks after birth was 0.84, 0.61, and 0.65, respectively. The UCP (I/ [I + III]) within 24 h of birth was significantly higher than that measured at 1 week or 3–4 weeks after birth. There was no significant correlation between UCP (I/ [I + III]) and the corrected gestational age. Conclusion: The UCP (I/ [I + III]) was higher within 24 h of birth. It decreased 1 week after birth and remained low without any significant changes for up to 4 weeks after birth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The normative transition to formal schooling confronts children with social challenges but also opportunities. Longitudinal research on how school entry impacts children’s family and friend-ship relationships is scarce. This study investigated social relationship qualities with parents, siblings, and friends among 1110 children (49.9% female) from the prospective, population-based Bavarian Longitudinal Study at 6 years (before school entry) and 8 years using a forced-choice card-sorting task. Multivariate analyses of variance revealed significant effects of age (i.e., school entry) on social relationship qualities with mothers (Pillai’s Trace (PT) = 0.28, F(9, 1101) = 47.73, p < 0.001), fathers (PT = 0.14, F(9, 1101) = 19.47, p < 0.001), siblings (PT = 0.27, F(9, 1101) = 46.14, p < 0.001), and friends (PT = 0.21, F(9, 1101) = 32.57, p < 0.001). On average, children reported higher levels of parental comfort after school entry. Companionable qualities increased in relationships with friends, whereas sibling relationships became more conflictual from preschool to early school age. Findings provide unique insights into how social relationships develop from preschool to early school age, supporting evidence of the growing importance of friends. Conflict was predominant and increasing in sibling relationships and should be considered more in future research.

Research points to evidence of innate prosocial tendencies present early in life. As more complex cognitive abilities emerge with development, this may alter the expression and nature of prosocial behaviors over time. Sharing is one important expression of prosocial behavior. Our aim was to explore how children’s sharing behavior with different recipients across important social categories changes by comparing two distinct transitional periods in development. We compared the responses of 46 preschoolers (M age = 4.95 years) and 52 5th graders (M age = 9.98 years) on two social decision-making paradigms. Results showed that older children shared more selectively depending on the recipient than younger children, who shared resources more equitably with different recipients. A second paradigm revealed greater uncoupling of behavior and cognition among older children, such that prosocial behavior in preschoolers was more closely linked to their judgments about the recipient’s character than it was for 5th graders. Increased cognitive complexity that emerges over the course of development can be used to help or discriminate against others, depending upon how those capacities are channeled. Therefore, how these abilities are shaped has important societal consequences.

Objective: The role of heterogeneous self-regulation deficits in ADHD has long been emphasized. Yet, longitudinal studies examining distinct self-regulation processes as prospective predictors of developmental change in ADHD symptoms spanning wide developmental periods are scarce. The aim of the current study was to examine affective and cognitive self-regulation as predictors of developmental change in ADHD symptoms from preschool to adolescence in a sample with one third of the children being at risk for developing an ADHD and/or ODD diagnosis.Method: At 5 years laboratory measures for hot and cool executive function (EF) and parental and teacher ratings were used for regulation of positive and negative emotionality. Symptoms of ADHD and ODD were measured at 5 and 13 years using parental and teacher ratings based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV).Results: Converging developmental paths in hyperactivity/impulsivity across time were found for those high versus low in early cognitive self-regulation, whereas the development of inattention symptoms diverged across time for those high versus low in early affective self-regulation.Conclusion: These results support the idea that different aspects of self-regulation are important for developmental change in the two separate ADHD symptom domains from preschool to adolescence. Self-esteem is continuous and has stable characteristics, but it may also change, e.g., during transitions from one educational level to the next. In a prospective cross-sectional study over a year and a half, 250 Polish early adolescents (N = 109, 54 girls; mean age at T1 = 12.68 years, SD = 0.49) and middle adolescents (N = 141, 107 girls; mean age at T1 = 15.80, SD = 0.44) were tested three times using Harter's Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents, assessing both global self-esteem and self-evaluation in eight domains. The change and consistency of self-esteem were analyzed, at both group and individual levels. At the group level, the following results were found: (1) continuity of self-esteem in five domains (scholastic competence, athletic competence, physical appearance, close friendship, and romantic appeal) and in global self-esteem and discontinuity in only three domains (social acceptance, job competence, and behavioral conduct); (2) significant inter-individual variation in the change not explained by age; and (3) higher self-esteem (in five domains) in early adolescents. At the individual level, the stability in most domains was weak, but was restored over the second year at the new school. The complexity of the developmental change and consistency in self-esteem in adolescence was highlighted, emphasizing the need for analyzing both group and individual change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Crossmodal sound–shape correspondence, the association of abstract shapes and nonsense words (e.g., "bouba-kiki" effect), is seen across cultures and languages. Recent research suggests that the sensitivity for such sound–shape pairings might increase with development. Here we examined one possible mechanism underlying developmental changes in sensitivity to sound–shape correspondences—if and how shape features, such as contour spikiness and the number and size of protrusions, might be weighted differently by children and adults. In Experiment 1, we asked participants to choose which of two nonsense words matched a given visual shape while manipulating contour spikiness and number and size of protrusions independently. We found that adults associated /i/ sounds with shapes having spiky contours and 3 small protrusions. Of these shape features, contour spikiness showed the strongest association. Whereas 9- to 11-year-olds showed adult-like responses, 6- to 8-year-olds prioritized protrusion number, not contour spikiness. Importantly, in Experiment 2, where contour spikiness was highlighted by presenting round and spikey shapes side by side, 6- to 8-year-olds could make associations based on contour spikiness. Our findings suggest that 6- to 8-year-olds prioritize different features of a shape when making sound–shape correspondence compared with adults. Interestingly, these shape-processing biases can be altered by context such that children can resemble adults when the relevant shape features are highlighted. Our results suggest that biases in visual shape processing and the ability to extract contextual information might be additional factors explaining developmental changes in sensitivity toward sound–shape correspondences. Background: Research reveals longitudinal bidirectional associations between changes in academic achievement and psychopathological symptoms. However, little is known about developmental changes in the magnitude of these associations, from childhood to adolescence. Methods: Participants were 648 Chinese children (347 males) who were followed from Grade 5 (mean age: 11.18 years) to Grade 9. Academic achievement and two types of symptoms (externalizing, depressive) were assessed annually. Structural equation modeling was used to examine longitudinal bidirectional associations between achievement and psychopathological symptoms, and developmental changes in effect sizes. Models were estimated using cross‐lagged panel modeling (CLPM), as well as random intercepts cross‐lagged panel modeling (RI‐CLPM). Results: The data supported the hypothesized academic incompetence and adjustment erosion effects, as well as the hypothesized developmental change in the academic incompetence effect whereby prior achievement's effects on subsequent externalizing increased with age. Results were similar for both genders and unaffected by inclusion of common risk factors as covariates. Conclusions: There are bidirectional associations between symptoms and achievement that change markedly across the transition into adolescence. Interpreting the effects using a developmental perspective, changes in reciprocal effects may be dynamic. The findings suggest that targeting both psychopathology and low academic achievement is worthwhile, but that distinct treatment effects will be found in childhood versus adolescence. Although visuo-motor temporal integration in children is suggested to be related to motor control and motor learning, its relevance is still unclear. On the other hand, visuo-motor temporal integration ability undergoes developmental changes with age. In the current correlational study, we measured manual dexterity and visuo-motor temporal integration ability in 132 children with typical development (age, 4–15 years) and investigated the relationship between the two functions. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2nd edition was used as an indicator of manual dexterity. The delay detection threshold (DDT) and steepness of the probability curve for delay detection, which was measured by the delayed visual feedback detection task for self-generated movement, were used as indices of the visuo-motor temporal integration ability. The results indicated significant correlations between manual dexterity/age and DDT/steepness of the probability curve for delay detection. In addition, hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that both manual dexterity and age significantly contributed to visuo-motor temporal integration, indicating a better fit than when only age was employed as an independent variable. Importantly, there was no interaction effect between age and manual dexterity. These findings were the first to suggest that manual dexterity is a significant predictor of visuo-motor temporal integration ability in children, regardless of age. The present study validated the important relationship between visuo-motor temporal integration and manual dexterity in children. Considering the limitations of the current study, including the non-homogeneous sample, further studies are still warranted to validate the results.
