Abstract

International audience; Urania is commonly used as a fuel in nuclear industry. Urania is heavily irradiated during its in-reactor stay, and faces drastic microstructural modifications, including few percent swelling and increase of dislocation density. Dislocations loops nucleate first [1] and transform with increasing fluence into lines. However, the early stages of their nucleation are hardly attainable experimentally. One commonly infers that their nucleation is related to the aggregation of point defects or defects clusters into dislocations. In the present paper [2], we clarify the first steps of the effect of irradiation on urania by means of molecular dynamics simulations using empirical potentials. The irradiation dose is simulated by continuous accumulation of Frenkel pairs at 600DC, skipping the cpu-expensive displacement cascades.Starting from a defectless urania, we observe the nucleation and growth of dislocations under Frenkel pairs accumulation. Detailed analysis shows a four stages evolution (i) an increase of point defects (ii) then the nucleation of Frank loops 13 from the aggregation of point defects, (ii) the transformation of Frank loops into perfect loops 12 (iv) and finally their stabilization as lines. Our simulations also show a swelling up to 3.2% during the first stage in which point defects are present. This swelling suddenly decreases to 1.5 percent in the second stage, as soon as dislocations nucleate. Both stage (iv) and swelling agree with experimental data [1,3] and therefore strengthen the four stages scenario of the microstructure evolution of urania under irradiation.

Abstract

A numerical strategy for the finite element simulation of the flow of two immiscible fluids has been developed based on unstructured triangular meshes. The tracking of the interface between the two fluids is accomplished by means of an advection equation for the volume fraction of one of these fluids. An accurate description of the interface is achieved by means of an automatic mesh refinement procedure developed for the simulation of fluid flow in twin-screw extruders. The advantage of this technique comes from the use of one single reference mesh. At each time iteration, this reference mesh is adapted by splitting up the elements in the vicinity of the interface into sub-elements. Local refinement can then be carried out with one single mesh to be generated before the simulation is started. First, the method will be presented in detail. It will then be applied to two-dimensional classical benchmark problems: the advection skew to the mesh and the transport of a square. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: The solubility and speciation of chromium in doped uranium oxide are measured in carefully controlled temperature and oxygen potential conditions using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). The examination of the samples by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) provides evidence that (i) chromium is soluble in the UO2 matrix under the +3 oxidation state only regardless of the sintering conditions which is in accordance with a soluble species of type CrO3/2 and (ii) soluble chromium exhibits octahedral symmetry with 6 atoms of oxygen forming CrO6 patterns in the UO2 structure. In consistency with all available experimental information including previously published data, the solubility of chromium in UO2 corresponding to each two-phase field with either Cr, CrO and Cr2O3 may be described in the ranges 1500°C< T <2000°C and −460< μ O2 <−360kJ/mol using the standard thermodynamic equations governing solubility equilibria. The characteristic parameters of the solubility laws in UO2 for the three chromium phases are derived. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
