Objectives. We assessed the prevalence of perceived abuse and discrimination among Arab American adults after September 11, 2001, and associations between abuse or discrimination and psychological distress, level of happiness, and health status. Methods. We gathered data from a face-to-face survey administered in 2003 to a representative, population-based sample of Arab American adults residing in the greater Detroit area. Results. Overall, 25% of the respondents reported post-September 11 personal or familial abuse, and 15% reported that they personally had a bad experience related to their ethnicity, with higher rates among Muslims than Christians. After adjustment for socioeconomic and demographic factors, perceived post-September 11 abuse was associated with higher levels of psychological distress, lower levels of happiness, and worse health status. Personal bad experiences related to ethnicity were associated with increased psychological distress and reduced happiness. Perceptions of not being respected within US society and greater reported effects of September 11 with respect to personal security and safety were associated with higher levels of psychological distress. Conclusions. Perceived post--September 11 abuse and discrimination were associated with increased psychological distress, reduced levels of happiness, and worse health status in our sample. Community-based, culturally sensitive partnerships should be established to assess and meet the health needs of Arab Americans. (Am J Public Health. 2010;100:284-291. doi: 10.2105/AJPH.2009. 164954)

Poverty concentration changes in the City of Detroit between 1990 and 2000 are reassessed using data on changes in spatial configuration of land use in the region, considering it as a proxy for neighborhood conditions.

Summary. This article compares the relationship between national embeddedness and metropolitan development in the Detroit and Nagoya auto regions. Based upon literature, descriptive data and in-depth interviews with 140 development officials in these 2 regions, it finds that, over the past 30 years, the US governmental system, its national approach to development and a lack of institutional support for metropolitan planning, have produced fiercely competitive interlocal relations. These elements have also exacerbated conditions of uneven metropolitan development in the Detroit auto region. Conversely, it argues that Japan's embedded autonomy has produced extremely co-operative intermunicipal relations and has helped to facilitate relatively balanced growth in the Nagoya auto region, during this same period. In other words, despite arguments against it, the spatial configurations of metropolitan areas in the US and Japan continue to be embedded or nested within their national (and sub-national) contexts.

For many living in Detroit, MI, the Detroit Institute of Arts symbolizes an older, white-dominated city, while the Museum of African American History represents a city where black culture is the strongest influence.

Why do racial differences in many indicators of mental and emotional well-being show inconsistent patterns? We propose that mental and emotional well-being are influenced by aspects of the social context, including experiences of unfair treatment and the concentration of households with incomes below the poverty level, and that differential exposure to these factors influences racial differences in mental well-being. We analyze the reporting of psychological distress and life satisfaction in a multistage area probability sample of 1,139 African American and white residents of the Detroit metropolitan area aged 18 and older. Both psychological distress and life satisfaction are significantly associated with exposure to unfair treatment and with the proportion of households in the census block group that were below the poverty level. Racial differences in psychological distress and life satisfaction were eliminated or reversed once differentials in the percent of households living below the poverty line and exposure to unfair treatment were accounted for. These findings contribute to a growing body of evidence that 'race' effects operate through multiple pathways that include race-based residential segregation and its attendant economic disinvestment at the community level, and interpersonal experiences of unfair treatment.

This paper examines the convergence of antiracist politics and theorizing with the emergent ethnographic attention to cultural constructions of whiteness. The methodological, conceptual, and political crossing points between antiracist scholarship and cultural anthropologists' burgeoning interest in the construction of white racial identity raise a host of provocative issues about the political stakes involved in studying whiteness. Drawing on my fieldwork on whites in Detroit, Michigan, I offer a critical reflection on the influence that antiracist projects have had on anthropologists' efforts to analyze whiteness. The core of this discussion involves an evaluation of the centrality of 'racism' in the analytical judgments of antiracist and ethnographic studies. Though it is perhaps more politically useful and appealing to develop emphatic assessments of how whites reproduce and imbibe racism, I argue that it is also critical to consider the highly contradictory and ambiguous aspects of white racial identification. Through a critique of the way antiracists analyze the stories white people tell, I delineate the comparative advantages that an ethnographic attention to the ambiguities of racial matters brings to the tasks of understanding whiteness.
