Search

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. Pionless effective field theory in a finite volume (FVEFT$_{\pi\!/}$) is investigated as a framework for the analysis of multi-nucleon spectra and matrix elements calculated in lattice QCD (LQCD). By combining FVEFT$_{\pi\!/}$ with the stochastic variational method, the spectra of nuclei with atomic number $A\in\{2,3\}$ are matched to existing finite-volume LQCD calculations at heavier-than-physical quark masses corresponding to a pion mass $m_\pi=806$ MeV, thereby enabling infinite-volume binding energies to be determined using infinite-volume variational calculations. Based on the variational wavefunctions that are constructed in this approach, the finite-volume matrix elements of various local operators are computed in FVEFT$_{\pi\!/}$ and matched to LQCD calculations of the corresponding QCD operators in the same volume, thereby determining the relevant one and two-body EFT counterterms and enabling an extrapolation of the LQCD matrix elements to infinite volume. As examples, the scalar, tensor, and axial matrix elements are considered, as well as the magnetic moments and the isovector longitudinal momentum fraction.

Neutrinoless double beta decay (\( 0 \nu \beta \beta \)) is a hypothetical nuclear decay mode with important implications. In particular, observation of this decay would demonstrate that the neutrino is a Majorana particle and that lepton number conservation is violated in nature. Relating experimental constraints on \(0 \nu \beta \beta\) decay rates to the neutrino masses requires theoretical input in the form of non-perturbative nuclear matrix elements which remain difficult to calculate reliably. This work marks a first step toward providing a general lattice QCD framework for computing long-distance \(0 \nu \beta \beta\) matrix elements in the case where the decay is mediated by a light Majorana neutrino. The relevant formalism is developed and then tested by computing the simplest such matrix element describing an unphysical \( \pi^{-} \rightarrow \pi^{+} e^{-} e^{-} \) transition on a series of domain wall fermion ensembles. The resulting lattice data is then fit to next-to-leading-order chiral perturbation theory, allowing a fully-controlled extraction of the low energy constant governing the transition rate, \(g_{\nu}^{\pi \pi}(\mu = 770 \,\, \mathrm{MeV}) = -10.78(12)_{\rm stat}(51)_{\rm sys}\). Finally, future prospects for calculations of more complicated processes, such as the phenomenologically important \(n^{0} n^{0} \rightarrow p^{+} p^{+} e^{-} e^{-}\) decay, are discussed., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

Systems with the quantum numbers of up to twelve charged and neutral pseudoscalar mesons, as well as one-, two-, and three-nucleon systems, are studied using dynamical lattice quantum chromodynamics and quantum electrodynamics (QCD+QED) calculations and effective field theory. QED effects on hadronic interactions are determined by comparing systems of charged and neutral hadrons after tuning the quark masses to remove strong isospin breaking effects. A non-relativistic effective field theory, which perturbatively includes finite-volume Coulomb effects, is analyzed for systems of multiple charged hadrons and found to accurately reproduce the lattice QCD+QED results. QED effects on charged multi-hadron systems beyond Coulomb photon exchange are determined by comparing the two- and three-body interaction parameters extracted from the lattice QCD+QED results for charged and neutral multi-hadron systems., Comment: 67 pages, 29 figures. Modern advances in algorithms for lattice QCD calculations have steadily driven down the resources required to generate gauge field ensembles and calculate quark propagators, such that, in cases relevant to nuclear physics, performing quark contractions to assemble correlation functions from propagators has become the dominant cost. This work explores a propagator sparsening algorithm for forming correlation functions describing multi-hadron systems, such as light nuclei, with reduced computational cost. The algorithm constructs correlation functions from sparsened propagators defined on a coarsened lattice geometry, where the sparsened propagators are obtained from propagators computed on the full lattice. This algorithm is used to study the low-energy QCD ground-state spectrum using a single Wilson-clover lattice ensemble with $m_{\pi} \approx 800$ MeV. It is found that the extracted ground state masses and binding energies, as well as their statistical uncertainties, are consistent when determined from correlation functions constructed from sparsened and full propagators. In addition, while evidence of modified couplings to excited states is observed in sparsened correlation functions, it is demonstrated that these effects can be removed, if desired, with an inexpensive modification to the sparsened estimator., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

High-energy scattering processes, such as deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and quasielastic (QE) scattering provide a wealth of information about the structure of atomic nuclei. The remarkable discovery of the empirical linear relationship between the slope of the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect in DIS and the short-range-correlation (SRC) scaling factors $a_2$ in QE kinematics is naturally explained in terms of scale separation in effective field theory. This explanation has powerful consequences, allowing us to calculate and predict SRC scaling factors from ab initio low-energy nuclear theory. We present ab initio calculations of SRC scaling factors for a nucleus $A$ relative to the deuteron $a_2(A/d)$ and relative to $^3\rm He$ $a_2(A/^3\rm He)$ in light and medium-mass nuclei. Our framework further predicts that the EMC effect and SRC scaling factors have minimal or negligible isovector corrections., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

While neutrino oscillation experiments have demonstrated that neutrinos have small, nonzero masses, much remains unknown about their properties and decay modes. One potential decay mode --- neutrinoless double beta decay ($0 \nu \beta \beta$) --- is a particularly interesting target of experimental searches, since its observation would imply that the neutrino is a Majorana particle, demonstrate that lepton number conservation is violated in nature, and give further constraints on the neutrino masses and mixing angles. Relating experimental constraints on $0 \nu \beta \beta$ decay rates to the neutrino masses, however, requires theoretical input in the form of non-perturbative nuclear matrix elements which remain difficult to calculate reliably. In this talk we will discuss progress towards first-principles calculations of relevant nuclear matrix elements using lattice QCD and effective field theory techniques, assuming neutrinoless double beta decay mediated by a light Majorana neutrino. We will show preliminary results for the $\pi^{-} \rightarrow \pi^{+} e^{-} e^{-}$ transition amplitude computed on a $16^{3} \times 32$ domain wall fermion lattice with a pion mass of 420 MeV, and discuss improved methods applicable to general lattice calculations of $0 \nu \beta \beta$ decay amplitudes., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, talk presented at the 36th Annual International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory (Lattice 2018)

The distributions of pressure and shear forces inside the proton are investigated using lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD) calculations of the energy momentum tensor, allowing the first model-independent determination of these fundamental aspects of proton structure. This is achieved by combining recent LQCD results for the gluon contributions to the energy momentum tensor with earlier calculations of the quark contributions. The utility of LQCD calculations in exploring, and supplementing, the assumptions in a recent extraction of the pressure distribution in the proton from deeply virtual Compton scattering experiments is also discussed. Based on this study, the target kinematics for experiments aiming to determine the pressure and shear distributions with greater precision at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and a future Electron Ion Collider are investigated., Comment: Units corrected on figure axes

A future Electron-Ion Collider will enable the gluon contributions to the gravitational form factors of the proton to be constrained experimentally for the first time. Here, the first calculation of these form factors from lattice Quantum Chromodynamics is presented. The calculations use a larger-than-physical value of the light quark mass corresponding to $m_\pi \sim 450$ MeV. All three form factors, which encode the momentum-dependence of the lowest moment of the spin independent gluon generalised parton distributions and are related to different components of the energy-momentum tensor, are resolved. In particular, the gluon $D$-term form factor, related to the pressure distribution inside the nucleon, is determined for the first time. The gluon contributions to the two gravitational form factors of the pion are also determined, and are compared to existing lattice determinations of the quark contributions to the gravitational form factors and to phenomenology.

We renew our intent to submit a proposal to perform a search for a non-zero value of the unmeasured hadronic double helicity flip structure function $\Delta(x,Q^2)$, predicted to be sensitive to gluons in the nucleus. This would be performed with an unpolarized electron beam and transversely polarized, spin-1, nuclear target. This structure function was first identified by Jaffe and Manohar in 1989 as "a clear signature for exotic gluonic components in the target," and a recent lattice QCD result by our collaborators has prompted renewed interest in the topic. An inclusive search with deep inelastic scattering, below $x$ of 0.3, via single spin tensor asymmetries may be feasible using the CEBAF 12 GeV electron beam and JLab/UVa solid polarized target, and would represent the first experimental exploration of this quantity.

The spin-independent and transversity generalised form factors (GFFs) of the $\phi$ meson are studied using lattice QCD calculations with light quark masses corresponding to a pion mass $m_\pi\sim450(5)$ MeV. One transversity and three spin-independent GFFs related to the lowest moments of leading-twist spin-independent and transversity gluon distributions are obtained at six non-zero values of the momentum transfer up to 1.2 GeV$^2$. These quantities are compared with the analogous spin-independent quark GFFs and the electromagnetic form factors determined on the same lattice ensemble. The results show quantitative distinction between the spatial distribution of transversely polarised gluons, unpolarised gluons, and quarks, and point the way towards further investigations of the gluon structure of nucleons and nuclei., Comment: Corrections to Eqs. We present an exploratory study of the gluonic structure of the $\phi$ meson using lattice QCD (LQCD). This includes the first investigation of gluonic transversity via the leading moment of the twist-two double-helicity-flip gluonic structure function $\Delta(x,Q^2)$. This structure function only exists for targets of spin $J\ge1$ and does not mix with quark distributions at leading twist, thereby providing a particularly clean probe of gluonic degrees of freedom. We also explore the gluonic analogue of the Soffer bound which relates the helicity flip and non-flip gluonic distributions, finding it to be saturated at the level of 80%. This work sets the stage for more complex LQCD studies of gluonic structure in the nucleon and in light nuclei where $\Delta(x,Q^2)$ is an 'exotic glue' observable probing gluons in a nucleus not associated with individual nucleons.

Quarkonium-nucleus systems are composed of two interacting hadronic states without common valence quarks, which interact primarily through multi-gluon exchanges, realizing a color van der Waals force. We present lattice QCD calculations of the interactions of strange and charm quarkonia with light nuclei. Both the strangeonium-nucleus and charmonium-nucleus systems are found to be relatively deeply bound when the masses of the three light quarks are set equal to that of the physical strange quark. Extrapolation of these results to the physical light-quark masses suggests that the binding energy of charmonium to nuclear matter is B < 40 MeV., Comment: published version

We present the results of lattice QCD calculations of the magnetic moments of the lightest nuclei, the deuteron, the triton and ${}^3$He, along with those of the neutron and proton. These calculations, performed at quark masses corresponding to $m_\pi \sim 800$ MeV, reveal that the structure of these nuclei at unphysically heavy quark masses closely resembles that at the physical quark masses. In particular, we find that the magnetic moment of ${}^3$He differs only slightly from that of a free neutron, as is the case in nature, indicating that the shell-model configuration of two spin-paired protons and a valence neutron captures its dominant structure. Similarly a shell-model-like moment is found for the triton, $\mu_{{}^3{\rm H}} \sim \mu_p$. It has been argued that the leading scalar-isoscalar WIMP-nucleus interactions receive parametrically enhanced contributions in the context of nuclear effective field theories. These contributions arise from meson-exchange currents (MECs) and potentially modify the impulse approximation estimates of these interactions by 10--60%. We point out that these MECs also contribute to the quark mass dependence of nuclear binding energies, that is, nuclear \sigma-terms. In this work, we use recent lattice QCD calculations of the binding energies of the deuteron, He-3 and He-4 at pion masses near 500 MeV and 800 MeV, combined with the experimentally determined binding energies at the physical point, to provide approximate determinations of the \sigma-terms for these light nuclei. For each nucleus, we find that the deviation of the corresponding nuclear \sigma-term from the single-nucleon estimate is at the few percent level, in conflict with the conjectured enhancement. As a consequence, lattice QCD calculations currently indicate that the cross sections for scalar-isoscalar WIMP-nucleus interactions arising from fundamental WIMP interactions with quarks do not suffer from significant uncertainties due to enhanced meson-exchange currents., Comment: journal version

The scattering lengths and effective ranges that describe low-energy nucleon-nucleon scattering are calculated in the limit of SU(3)-flavor symmetry at the physical strange-quark mass with Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics. The calculations are performed with an isotropic clover discretization of the quark action in three volumes with spatial extents of L \sim 3.4 fm, 4.5fm and 6.7 fm, and with a lattice spacing of b \sim 0.145 fm. With determinations of the energies of the two-nucleon systems (both of which contain bound states at these up and down quark masses) at rest and moving in the lattice volume, Luscher's method is used to determine the low-energy phase shifts in each channel, from which the scattering length and effective range are obtained. The scattering parameters, in the 1S0 channel are found to be m_pi a^(1S0) = 9.50^{+0.78}_{-0.69}^{+1.10}_{-0.80} and m_pi r^(1S0) = {4.61^{+0.29}_{-0.31}^{+0.24}_{-0.26}, and in the 3S1 channel are m_pi a^(3S1) = 7.45^{+0.57}_{-0.53}^{+0.71}_{-0.49} and m_pi r^(3S1) = 3.71^{+0.28}_{-0.31}^{+0.28}_{-0.35}. These values are consistent with the two-nucleon system exhibiting Wigner's supermultiplet symmetry, which becomes exact in the limit of large-N_c. In both spin channels, the phase shifts change sign at higher momentum, near the start of the t-channel cut, indicating that the nuclear interactions have a repulsive core even at the SU(3)-symmetric point., Comment: 17 pages, 29 figures

The binding energies of a range of nuclei and hypernuclei with atomic number A <= 4 and strangeness |s| <= 2, including the deuteron, di-neutron, H-dibaryon, 3He, Lambda 3He, Lambda 4He, and Lambda Lambda 4He, are calculated in the limit of flavor-SU(3) symmetry at the physical strange quark mass with quantum chromodynamics (without electromagnetic interactions). The nuclear states are extracted from Lattice QCD calculations performed with n_f=3 dynamical light quarks using an isotropic clover discretization of the quark-action in three lattice volumes of spatial extent L ~ 3.4 fm, 4.5 fm and 6.7 fm, and with a single lattice spacing b ~ 0.145 fm., Comment: 35 pages, 45 figures Increased statistics, enhanced discussion, fixed typos

The low-energy neutron-Sigma^- interactions determine, in part, the role of the strange quark in dense matter, such as that found in astrophysical environments. The scattering phase shifts for this system are obtained from a numerical evaluation of the QCD path integral using the technique of Lattice QCD. Our calculations, performed at a pion mass of m_pi ~ 389 MeV in two large lattice volumes, and at one lattice spacing, are extrapolated to the physical pion mass using effective field theory. The interactions determined from QCD are consistent with those extracted from hyperon-nucleon experimental data within uncertainties, and strengthen theoretical arguments that the strange quark is a crucial component of dense nuclear matter., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Results of a high-statistics, multi-volume Lattice QCD exploration of the deuteron, the di-neutron, the H-dibaryon, and the Xi-Xi- system at a pion mass of m ~ 390 MeV are presented. Calculations were performed with an anisotropic n_f = 2+1 Clover discretization in four lattice volumes of spatial extent L ~ 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0 fm, with a lattice spacing of b_s ~ 0.123 fm in the spatial-direction, and b_t ~ b_s/3.5 in the time-direction. The Xi-Xi- is found to be bound by B_{Xi-Xi-} = 14.0(1.4)(6.7) MeV, consistent with expectations based upon phenomenological models and low-energy effective field theories constrained by nucleon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon scattering data at the physical light-quark masses. We find weak evidence that both the deuteron and the di-neutron are bound at this pion mass, with binding energies of B_d = 11(05)(12) MeV and B_{nn} = 7.1(5.2)(7.3) MeV, respectively. With an increased number of measurements and a refined analysis, the binding energy of the H-dibaryon is B_H = 13.2(1.8)(4.0) MeV at this pion mass, updating our previous result., Comment: 25 pages, 30 figures

Chiral perturbation theory makes definitive predictions for the extrinsic behavior of hadrons in external electric and magnetic fields. Near the chiral limit, the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of pions, kaons, and nucleons are determined in terms of a few well-known parameters. In this limit, hadrons become quantum mechanically diffuse as polarizabilities scale with the inverse square-root of the quark mass. In some cases, however, such predictions from chiral perturbation theory have not compared well with experimental data. Ultimately we must turn to first principles numerical simulations of QCD to determine properties of hadrons, and confront the predictions of chiral perturbation theory. To address the electromagnetic polarizabilities, we utilize the background field technique. Restricting our attention to calculations in background electric fields, we demonstrate new techniques to determine electric polarizabilities and baryon magnetic moments for both charged and neutral states. As we can study the quark mass dependence of observables with lattice QCD, the lattice will provide a crucial test of our understanding of low-energy QCD, which will be timely in light of ongoing experiments, such as at COMPASS and HI\gamma S., Comment: 3 pages, talk given by B. An analysis of the pion mass and pion decay constant is performed using mixed-action Lattice QCD calculations with domain-wall valence quarks on ensembles of rooted, staggered n_f = 2+1 MILC configurations. Calculations were performed at two lattice spacings of b~0.125 fm and b~0.09 fm, at two strange quark masses, multiple light quark masses, and a number of lattice volumes. The ratios of light quark to strange quark masses are in the range 0.1 <= m_l / m_s <= 0.6, while pion masses are in the range 235 < m_\pi < 680 MeV. A two-flavor chiral perturbation theory analysis of the Lattice QCD calculations constrains the Gasser-Leutwyler coefficients bar{l}_3 and bar{l}_4 to be bar{l}_3 = 4.04(40)(+73-55) and bar{l}_4 = 4.30(51)(+84-60). All systematic effects in the calculations are explored, including those from the finite lattice space-time volume, the finite lattice spacing, and the finite fifth dimension in the domain-wall quark action. A consistency is demonstrated between a chiral perturbation theory analysis at fixed lattice spacing combined with a leading order continuum extrapolation, and the mixed-action chiral perturbation theory analysis which explicitly includes the leading order discretization effects. Chiral corrections to the pion decay constant are found to give f_\pi / f = 1.062(26)(+42-40) where f is the decay constant in the chiral limit. The most recent scale setting by the MILC Collaboration yields a postdiction of f_\pi = 128.2(3.6)(+4.4-6.0)(+1.2-3.3) MeV at the physical pion mass., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures; version 2 accepted for publication in PRD

The pi+pi+ s-wave scattering phase-shift is determined below the inelastic threshold using Lattice QCD. Calculations were performed at a pion mass of m_pi~390 MeV with an anisotropic n_f=2+1 clover fermion discretization in four lattice volumes, with spatial extent L~2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.9 fm, and with a lattice spacing of b_s~0.123 fm in the spatial direction and b_t b_s/3.5 in the time direction. The phase-shift is determined from the energy-eigenvalues of pi+pi+ systems with both zero and non-zero total momentum in the lattice volume using Luscher's method. Our calculations are precise enough to allow for a determination of the threshold scattering parameters, the scattering length a, the effective range r, and the shape-parameter P, in this channel and to examine the prediction of two-flavor chiral perturbation theory: m_pi^2 a r = 3+O(m_pi^2/Lambda_chi^2). Chiral perturbation theory is used, with the Lattice QCD results as input, to predict the scattering phase-shift (and threshold parameters) at the physical pion mass. Our results are consistent with determinations from the Roy equations and with the existing experimental phase shift data., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures

The volume dependence of the octet baryon masses and relations among them are explored with Lattice QCD. Calculations are performed with n_f=2+1 clover fermion discretization in four lattice volumes, with spatial extent L ~ 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.9 fm, with an anisotropic lattice spacing of b_s ~ 0.123 fm in the spatial direction, and b_t = b_s/3.5 in the time direction, and at a pion mass of m_pi ~ 390 MeV. The typical precision of the ground-state baryon mass determination is ~0.2%, enabling a precise exploration of the volume dependence of the masses, the Gell-Mann--Okubo mass relation, and of other mass combinations. A comparison of the volume dependence with the predictions of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is performed in both the SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R and SU(3)_L X SU(3)_R expansions. Predictions of the three-flavor expansion for the hadron masses are found to describe the observed volume dependences reasonably well. Further, the Delta-N-pi axial coupling constant is extracted from the volume dependence of the nucleon mass in the two-flavor expansion, with only small modifications in the three-flavor expansion from the inclusion of kaons and etas. At a given value of m_pi L, the finite-volume contributions to the nucleon mass are predicted to be significantly smaller at m_pi ~ 140 MeV than at m_pi ~ 390 MeV due to a coefficient that scales as ~ m_pi^3. This is relevant for the design of future ensembles of lattice gauge-field configurations. Finally, the volume dependence of the pion and kaon masses are analyzed with two-flavor and three-flavor chiral perturbation theory., Comment: 34 pages, 45 figures

The current constraints from lattice QCD on the existence of the H-dibaryon are discussed. With only two significant lattice QCD calculations of the H-dibaryon binding energy at approximately the same lattice spacing, the forms of the chiral and continuum extrapolations to the physical point are not determined. In this brief report, we consider the constraints on the H-dibaryon imposed by two simple chiral extrapolations. In both instances, the extrapolation to the physical pion mass allows for a bound H-dibaryon or a near-threshold scattering state. We present evidence for the existence of a bound H-dibaryon, an I=0, J=0, s=-2 state with valence quark structure uuddss, at a pion mass of m_pi ~ 389 MeV. Using the results of Lattice QCD calculations performed on four ensembles of anisotropic clover gauge-field configurations, with spatial extents of L ~ 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.9 fm at a spatial lattice spacing of b ~ 0.123 fm, we find an H-dibaryon bound by B = 16.6 +- 2.1 +- 4.6 MeV at a pion mass of m_pi ~ 389 MeV., Comment: 4 pages and 3 figures. v2 accepted by PRL

We review recent progress toward establishing lattice Quantum Chromodynamics as a predictive calculational framework for nuclear physics. A survey of the current techniques that are used to extract low-energy hadronic scattering amplitudes and interactions is followed by a review of recent two-body and few-body calculations by the NPLQCD collaboration and others. We discuss the extraction of the electromagnetic and spin polarisabilities of nucleons from lattice QCD. We show that the external field method can be used to measure all the electromagnetic and spin polarisabilities including those of charged particles. We show that hadronic matrix elements can be extracted from lattice simulations with background fields that arise from operator exponentiation. Importantly, flavour-singlet matrix elements can be evaluated without requiring the computation of disconnected diagrams, thus facilitating a calculation of the quark contribution to the spin of the proton and the singlet axial coupling, $g_A^0$. In the two nucleon sector, a background field approach will allow calculation of the magnetic and quadrupole moments of the deuteron and an investigation of the EMC effect directly from lattice QCD. We derive double distributions for the proton in a simple model that contains scalar as well as axial-vector diquark correlations. The model parameters are tuned so that the experimentally measured electromagnetic form factors are reproduced for small momentum transfer. We explore the analytic structure of the gluon and quark propagators of Landau gauge QCD from numerical solutions of the coupled system of renormalized Dyson--Schwinger equations and from fits to lattice data. We find sizable negative norm contributions in the transverse gluon propagator indicating the absence of the transverse gluon from the physical spectrum. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed. For the quark propagator we find evidence for a mass-like singularity on the real timelike momentum axis, with a mass of 350 to 500 MeV. In Landau gauge QCD the infrared behavior of the propagator of transverse gluons can be analytically determined to be a power law from Dyson-Schwinger equations. This propagator clearly shows positivity violation, indicating the absence of the transverse gluons from the physical spectrum, i.e. gluon confinement. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed capturing all important features. We provide arguments that the Landau gauge quark propagator possesses a singularity on the real timelike axis. We calculate parton and generalized parton distributions in Minkowski space using a scalar propagator with a pair of complex conjugate poles. Correct spectral and support properties are obtained only after careful analytic continuation from Euclidean space. Alternately the quark distribution function can be calculated from modified cutting rules, which put the intermediate state on its complex mass shells. Distribution functions agree with those resulting from the model's Euclidean space double distribution which we calculate via non-diagonal matrix elements of twist-two operators. Thus one can use a wide class of analytic parameterizations of the quark propagator to connect Euclidean space Green functions to light-cone dominated amplitudes., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, RevTex4

We analyze the moments of parton distribution functions in the pion calculated in lattice QCD, paying particular attention to their chiral extrapolation. Using the lowest three non-trivial moments calculated on the lattice, we assess the accuracy with which the x dependence of both the valence and sea quark distributions in the pion can be extracted. The resulting valence quark distributions at the physical pion mass are in fair agreement with existing Drell-Yan data, but the statistical errors are such that one cannot yet confirm (or rule out) the large-x behavior expected from hadron helicity conservation in perturbative QCD. We investigate the connection of lattice calculations of moments of isovector parton distributions to the physical regime through extrapolations in the quark mass. We consider the one pion loop renormalisation of the nucleon matrix elements of the corresponding operators and thereby develop formulae with which to extrapolate the moments of the unpolarised, helicity and transversity distributions. These formulae are consistent with chiral perturbation theory in the chiral limit and incorporate the correct heavy quark limits. In the polarised cases, the inclusion of intermediate states involving the $\Delta$ isobar is found to be very important. The results of our extrapolations are in general agreement with the phenomenological values of these moments where they are known, and for the first time we perform an extrapolation of the low moments of the isovector transversity distribution which is consistent with chiral symmetry., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. We present a complete analysis of the chiral extrapolation of lattice moments of all twist-2 isovector quark distributions, including corrections from N pi and Delta pi loops. Even though the Delta resonance formally gives rise to higher order non-analytic structure, the coefficients of the higher order terms for the helicity and transversity moments are large and cancel much of the curvature generated by the wave function renormalization. A Ward-Takahashi identity preserving Bethe-Salpeter kernel can always be calculated explicitly from a dressed-quark-gluon vertex whose diagrammatic content is enumerable. We illustrate that fact using a vertex obtained via the complete resummation of dressed-gluon ladders. While this vertex is planar, the vertex-consistent kernel is nonplanar and that is true for any dressed vertex. In an exemplifying model the rainbow-ladder truncation of the gap and Bethe-Salpeter equations yields many results; e.g., pi- and rho-meson masses, that are changed little by including higher-order corrections. Repulsion generated by nonplanar diagrams in the vertex-consistent Bethe-Salpeter kernel for quark-quark scattering is sufficient to guarantee that diquark bound states do not exist., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, REVTEX4

We examine the extraction of moments of parton distributions from lattice data, focusing in particular on the chiral extrapolation as a function of the quark mass. Inclusion of the correct chiral behavior of the spin-averaged isovector distribution resolves a long-standing discrepancy between the lattice moments and experiment. We extract the x-dependence of the valence u-d distribution from the lowest few lattice moments, and discuss the implications for the quark mass dependence of meson masses lying on the rho Regge trajectory.
