Abstract

The autofluorescence of calabrian Opuntia ficus-indica bioactive extract upon UV illumination is explored by fluorescence spectroscopy enabling to investigate the typology and distribution of responsible molecules within green cladodes. The spectroscopic analysis of the extract shows a significative red emission, suggesting an abundance of chlorophylls in the sample. Such molecules show pronounced fluorescence in the visible range (400-800 nm) with a very large Stokes shift, when excited with UV light source. The fluorescence profiling is performed also in the case of polymers, such as poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), enriched with OFI extract with a signal improvement up to 40 times greater than the extract alone. This by-product fluorescent molecule can replace commercial dyes into several applications spanning from nano-optics to anti-counterfeiting and bioimaging.

Abstract

The development of new anti-counterfeiting solutions is a constant challenge and involves several research fields. Much interest is devoted to systems that are impossible to clone, based on the Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) paradigm. In this work, new strategies based on electrospinning and electrospraying of dye-doped polymeric materials are presented for the manufacturing of flexible free-standing films that embed different PUF keys. Films can be used to fabricate anticounterfeiting labels having three encryption levels: i) a map of fluorescent polymer droplets, with non deterministic positions on a dense yarn of polymer nanofibers; ii) a characteristic fluorescence spectrum for each label; iii) a challenge-response pairs (CRPs) identification protocol based on the strong nature of the physical unclonable function. The intrinsic uniqueness introduced by the deposition techniques encodes enough complexity into the optical anti-counterfeiting tag to generate thousands of cryptographic keys. The simple and cheap fabrication process as well as the multilevel authentication makes such colored polymeric unclonable tags a practical solution in the secure protection of merchandise in our daily life.

Abstract

Multiphoton photoreduction of photosensitive metallic precursors via direct laser writing (DLW) is a promising technique for the synthesis of metallic structures onto solid substrates at the sub-micron scale. DLW triggered by a two photon absorption process is done using a femtosecond NIR laser (lambda = 780 nm), tetrachloroauric acid (HAuCl4) as a gold precursor, and isinglass as a natural hydrogel matrix. The presence of a polymeric, transparent matrix avoids unwanted diffusive processes acting as a network for the metallic nanoparticles. After the writing process, a bath in deionized water removes the gold precursor ions and eliminates the polymer matrix. Different aspects underlying the growth of the gold nanostructures (AuNSs) are here investigated to achieve full control on the size and density of the AuNSs. Writing parameters (laser power, exposure time, and scanning speed) are optimized to control the patterns and the AuNSs size. The influence of a second bath containing Au3+ to further control the size and density of the AuNSs is also investigated, observing that these AuNSs are composed of individual gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that grow individually. A fine-tuning of these parameters leads to an important improvement of the created structures' quality, with a fine control on size and density of AuNSs.

19. Evaluation of CO2storage properties and mobility through NMR technique in post-grafting synthetized organically functionalized porous silica

Abstract

Functionalized porous silica materials were synthesized in alkaline conditions by post-grafting method using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as templating agent, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as silica precursors and trialkoxysilanes functionalised with different organic groups. Textural features, halfway between microporosity and mesoporosity, combined with the surface physico-chemical ones related to various organic groups, determined different CO2storage properties highlighting a strong interaction with the precursor 3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane. NMR spectroscopy also showed how physisorption is the mainstream mechanism for CO2adsorption in all the sorbents, except for the aforementioned organic group in which an important chemisorption contribution occurs. Diffusion and molecular mobility analysis revealed that at least two species coexist within the micro-/meso-pores of the sorbents, namely, CO2molecules powerfully interacting with the pore surface (pore-surface CO2) and “bulk-like” CO2filling the central region of the pores. Furthermore, the post functionalization suppresses the diffusion of CO2molecules through the pore channels with all the functionalized materials exhibiting a single self-diffusion coefficient. On the other side, D// strictly depends on the average pore size of the sorbent.

Abstract

Graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide thin films are very promising materials because they can be used in optoelectronic devices and in a growing range of applications such as touch screens and flexible displays. In this work, graphene oxide (GO) and thermally reduced graphene oxide (rGO) thin films, deposited on Ti/glass substrates, have been obtained by electrophoretic deposition. The morphological and the structural properties of the samples have been investigated by micro-Raman technique, X-ray reflectometry, and SEM analysis. In order to study the optical and electrical properties, variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry and impedance analysis have been performed. The thermal annealing changes strongly the structural, electrical, and optical properties, because during the thermal processes some amount of sp³ bonds originally present in GO were removed. In particular, the annealing enhances the Ohmic behavior of the rGO film increasing its conductivity and the estimated optical density. Moreover, using electrophoretic deposition, we have found a higher value of optical density for GO thin films, not observed in GO films obtained with other deposition methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Polymeric membrane technology applied to gas separation is seen as a valuable alternative to conventional systems due to its ease integrability with existing plant, its lower energy consumption, and its flexibility when scaling up. It constitutes a cheaper solution because, in accordance with the principles of process intensification strategy, realized with a reduced number of stages process. In this work, for the first time, a modified polylactic acid‐based polymer (PLA Easy Fil™ – White) was used to synthesize polymeric membranes for use in CO2 separation. This has the further advantage of adopting a biodegradable and non‐toxic material and environmental friendly. Dense symmetric PLA Easy Fil™ – White membranes (average thickness ∼ 27 μm) were prepared and characterized in terms of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) analyses and in single gas permeation tests to determine their perm‐selectivity at room temperature in the particular field of CO2/CH4 separation as an example of CO2 removal from raw natural gas or biogas. A CO2/CH4 ideal selectivity equal to 285 (corresponding to a CO2 permeability of 70 barrer) was obtained, overcoming the related Robeson's upper bound. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Abstract

Lately, the optical properties of Graphene Oxide (GO) and Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO) films have been studied in the ultraviolet and visible spectral range. However, the accurate optical properties in the extended near-infrared and mid-infrared range have not been published yet. In this work, we report a Variable Angle Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (VASE) characterization of GO thin films dip-coated on SiO2/Si substrates and thermally reduced GO films in the 0.38–4.1 eV photon energy range. Moreover, the optical properties of RGO stabilized with poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) films dip-coated on SiO2/Si substrates are studied in the same range for the first time. The Lorentz optical models fit well with the experimental data. In addition, the morphological properties of the samples were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Abstract

Activated carbons exhibit a high grade of porosity, which together with structural stability, regenerability and cyclability makes them capable of achieving excellent hydrogen adsorption capacity. A further advantage comes from the ease of production and the use of recyclable and biocompatible materials. A simple way to produce activated carbons from amorphous cellulose involves procedures in which a pyrolysis process is combined with physical activation in CO 2. We used this approach by optimizing the production process tuning the activation times. The aim is to evaluate the influence of this process parameter on the formation of the specific surface area, the pore volume and fraction of micropores with a typical size <2 nm. The influence of these structural parameters on the hydrogen adsorption properties was then evaluated. The textural and adsorption characteristics were investigated using a commercial volumetric apparatus (ASAP 2460, Micromeritics) at −196 °C and pressures between 0 and 1 bar, while the morphological properties were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the nanostructured samples are characterized by a very high degree of ultra-microporosity (<0.7 nm) with an average pore size between 0.5 and 0.6 nm and a high specific surface area, reaching maximum values around 1500 m2/g and micropore volume up to 0.58 cc/g. These morphological characteristics strongly influence the hydrogen adsorption properties, where the molecules adsorbed reach values very close to the coverage of ideal monolayer. The synthesized activated carbon samples show a higher hydrogen adsorption capacity than similar commercial materials tested under the same thermodynamic conditions.
