Abstract

The paper presents a finite element method (FEM) analysis of composite hexagonal honeycomb structures, which are widely used in various engineering applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and energy absorption capabilities. The primary objective is to investigate the mechanical behavior and performance of these structures under loading conditions. By employing advanced FEM techniques, a model in SolidWorks is created, and the hexagonal honeycomb configurations are simulated using composite materials and Hypermesh to understand their stress distribution, deformation characteristics and failure mechanisms. The study includes parametric analysis to evaluate the effects of various factors such as cell wall thickness, material properties and geometric dimensions on the overall structural integrity. The findings provide valuable insights into optimizing honeycomb structures for enhanced performance in aerospace, automotive and civil engineering applications and contribute a model for four distinct types of material. Abstract

Panels made using honeycomb sandwich technique can help aerospace manufacturers maintain weight and fulfill certain strength requirements. Rigidity, stress absorption, fatigue resistance, and resistance to weather, chemicals, fire and isolation are some of the key benefits of honeycomb panels. Due to mechanical and acoustical requirements for high strength and weight target, it is common to select a sandwich design with a cheap and recyclable core material. Among other things, honeycomb sandwich structures are used in ship hulls, automobiles and civil constructions. Usage of these designs is the best way to obtain high strength and title material utilization. In this paper, the designs of hexagonal and square honeycomb constructions are evaluated for the most favorable structural outcomes. A honeycomb panel was produced using SolidWorks software. The proposed model was subjected to structural analysis using LS-DYNA software for four distinct kinds of materials: copper, steel, titanium and aluminum. Abstract

The observed retreat of several Himalayan glaciers and snow packs is a cause of concern for the huge population in southern Asia that is dependent on the glacial-fed rivers emanating from Himalayas. There is considerable uncertainty about how cryospheric recession in the Himalayan region will respond to climate change, and how the water resource availability will be affected. As a first step towards quantifying the contribution of glacier-melt water, hydrograph separation of River Ganga at Rishikesh into its constituent components, namely (i) surface runoff, (ii) glacial ice-melt and (iii) groundwater discharge has been done in this paper. A three-component mixing model has been employed using the values of δO and electrical conductivity (EC) of the river water, and its constituents, to estimate the time-varying relative fraction of each component. The relative fraction of the surface runoff peaks (70-90%) during winter, due to the near-zero contribution of glacial ice-melt, essentially represents the melting of surface snow from the catchment. The contribution of glacial ice-melt to the stream discharge peaks during summer and monsoon reaches a maximum value of ∼40% with an average of 32%. The fraction of groundwater discharge varies within a narrow range (15 ± 5%) throughout the year. On the basis of the variation in the d-excess values of river water, it is also suggested that the snow-melt and ice-melt component has a significant fraction derived from winter precipitation with moisture source from mid-latitude westerlies (also known as western disturbances). Abstract

The Indus River Basin (IRB), one of the major river basins in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, is primarily sustained by meltwater from the cryosphere. It caters to diverse sectors, including intense irrigation-supported agriculture, energy production, tourism and biodiversity. The cryosphere of the Upper Indus Basin (UIB) is mainly influenced by the western disturbances with subordinate contribution from the Indian Summer Monsoon. Increase in ambient temperature, shrinking cryospheric reserves, fluctuating surface run-off and enhanced frequency of extreme weather events are some of the noticeable indicators of climate change in the UIB. These changes will most likely adversely affect the water-dependent sectors in the upstream and downstream of IRB, posing serious threat to food security and livelihoods. Although the region has gained significant attention in recent years, there remains a noticeable knowledge gap pertaining to certain key issues with serious implications for the natural environment and the people. A national workshop was organized for stimulated deliberations to identify the major knowledge gaps and suggest a policy framework for climate change mitigation in the UIB. The workshop underscores the urgent need of multi-institutional, multidisciplinary, comprehensive, coordinated and time-bound collaboration to study the interplay of complex drivers on water resources of the UIB.
