6. Affective Outcomes of a Summer Talent Development Program: What Do Students Say?

Abstract

This study explored the affective outcomes students perceived from participating in a summer program and the program components that contributed to participants’ perceived affective development. Participants were 55 middle school students (29 girls) with intellectual gifts who participated in a 4-day-long residential program conducted in a western state in India. Participants wrote descriptive reflections responding to a 16-item open-ended survey. Matrix coding was used to code affective outcomes and the associated program components. Thematic analyses of responses revealed five themes that depicted improvement in participants’ (a) confidence and courage, (b) self-awareness, (c) social awareness, (d) social skills, and (e) inspiration. Leadership workshops and group activities, rural experience, and camp structure were discussed most frequently in relation to specific affective outcomes. Findings indicated that a direct and well-planned affective intervention can provide opportunities for social and emotional learning. Implications for holistic talent development programming have been discussed.

17. Online Learning, Classroom Quality, and Student Motivation: Perspectives from Students, Teachers, Parents, and Program Staff

Abstract

The purpose of this concurrent mixed-methods study was to assess the quality of online learning with a focus on student motivation in the context of a talent development program. Data were collected from 221 Indian students from fifth to tenth grades for three academic years during their participation in 14 online and 10 in-person courses. Students, teachers, and parents responded to a measure of classroom quality assessing five constructs--appeal, meaningfulness, academic self-efficacy, challenge, and choice. In addition, 41 online sessions were observed by program staff using an additional measure of instructional quality. Participants rated online learning to be highly supportive of learning motivation. No significant differences were observed in student motivation by program format, gender, or program level. Qualitative analysis revealed specific affordances and challenges in supporting student motivation in online learning. Implications in the context of out-of-school programs for students with intellectual gifts and talents are discussed.

Abstract

Hyperspectral Imagery (HSI) often suffers from degradation caused by different types of noise, including Gaussian noise, impulse noise, and stripe noise. Restoring the quality of HSI is a complex task, particularly due to the high dimensionality of HSI datasets. In recent years, there has been a growing utilization of low-rank tensor-based and deep learning-based approaches for denoising HSI data, especially in scenarios involving mixed noise. In this research paper, we assess the performance of two low-rank-based methods and one deep learning-based method when applied to benchmark HSI datasets with a focus on the removal of mixed noise. We quantitatively evaluate the restored datasets using a range of quality metrics and subject them to qualitative visual assessment. Our experimental findings reveal that the low-rank-based methods exhibit promising results in effectively mitigating mixed noise in HSI data. These methods offer a viable solution for addressing the challenge of noise removal in hyperspectral imagery, contributing to improved data quality and usability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Diabetic wounds (DWs) are considered chronic complications observed in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Usually, DWs originate from the interplay of inflammation, oxidation, impaired tissue re-epithelialization, vasculopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy, all of which are related to insulin resistance and sensitivity. The conventional approaches available for the treatment of DWs are mainly confined to the relief of wound pressure, debridement of the wound, and management of infection. In this paper, we speculate that treatment of DWs with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and subsequent activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) via the AhR pathway might be highly beneficial for DW patients. This estimation is based on several lines of evidence showing that 5-ASA and PPAR-γ activation are involved in the restoration of insulin sensitivity, re-epithelialization, and microcirculation. Additionally, 5-ASA and TGF-β activate inflammation and the production of pro-inflammatory mediators. Suitable stabilized formulations of 5-ASA with high absorption rates are indispensable for scrutinizing its probable pharmacological benefits since 5-ASA is known to possess lower solubility profiles because of its reduced permeability through skin tissue. In vitro and in vivo studies with stabilized formulations and a control (placebo) are mandatory to determine whether 5-ASA indeed holds promise for the curative treatment of DWs.
