Abstract

The response of a position-sensitive Li-glass scintillator detector being developed for thermal-neutron detection with 6 mm position resolution has been investigated using collimated beams of thermal neutrons. The detector was moved perpendicularly through the neutron beams in 0.5 to 1.0 mm horizontal and vertical steps. Scintillation was detected in an 8 X 8 pixel multi-anode photomultiplier tube on an event-by-event basis. In general, several pixels registered large signals at each neutron-beam location. The number of pixels registering signal above a set threshold was investigated, with the maximization of the single-hit efficiency over the largest possible area of the detector as the primary goal. At a threshold of ~50% of the mean of the full-deposition peak, ~80% of the events were registered in a single pixel, resulting in an effective position resolution of ~5 mm in X and Y. Lower thresholds generally resulted in events demonstrating higher pixel multiplicities, but these events could also be localized with ~5 mm position resolution., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The response of a position-sensitive Li-glass based scintillation detector to focused beams of 2.5 MeV protons and deuterons has been investigated. The beams were scanned across the detector in 0.5 mm horizontal and vertical steps perpendicular to the beams. Scintillation light was registered using an 8 by 8 pixel multi-anode photomultiplier tube. The signal amplitudes were recorded for each pixel on an event-by-event basis. Several pixels generally registered considerable signals at each beam location. Abstract

The response of a position-sensitive Li-glass scintillator detector to $\alpha$-particles from a collimated $^{241}$Am source scanned across the face of the detector has been measured. Scintillation light was read out by an 8 X 8 pixel multi-anode photomultiplier and the signal amplitude for each pixel has been recorded for every position on a scan. The pixel signal is strongly dependent on position and in general several pixels will register a signal (a hit) above a given threshold. Abstract

An overview is provided of the 15 neutron beam instruments making up the initial instrument suite of the European Spallation Source (ESS), and being made available to the neutron user community. The ESS neutron source consists of a high-power accelerator and target station, providing a unique long-pulse time structure of slow neutrons. The design considerations behind the time structure, moderator geometry and instrument layout are presented. The 15-instrument suite consists of two small-angle instruments, two reflectometers, an imaging beamline, two single-crystal diffractometers; one for macromolecular crystallography and one for magnetism, two powder diffractometers, and an engineering diffractometer, as well as an array of five inelastic instruments comprising two chopper spectrometers, an inverse-geometry single-crystal excitations spectrometer, an instrument for vibrational spectroscopy and a high-resolution backscattering spectrometer. The conceptual design, performance and scientific drivers of each of these instruments are described. All of the instruments are designed to provide breakthrough new scientific capability, not currently available at existing facilities, building on the inherent strengths of the ESS long-pulse neutron source of high flux, flexible resolution and large bandwidth. Each of them is predicted to provide world-leading performance at an accelerator power of 2 MW. This technical capability translates into a very broad range of scientific capabilities. The composition of the instrument suite has been chosen to maximise the breadth and depth of the scientific impact of the early years of the ESS, and provide a solid base for completion and further expansion of the facility.

13. Surfactant-Induced Collapse of Polymer Chains and Monodisperse Growth of Aggregates near the Precipitation Boundary in Carboxymethylcellulose−DTAB Aqueous Solutions

Abstract

We have studied aqueous solutions of a polyelectrolyte, carboxymethylcellulose, which is an anionic cellulose derivative, and a cationic surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). We have investigated the interactions between the two species, both at the air/water interface and in the bulk, for increasing DTAB concentrations. Mixed surfactant/polymer aggregates are formed at the air/water surface at extremely low surfactant concentrations, whereas bulk aggregates are formed later, above a critical aggregation concentration (cac). A small viscosity maximum at the cac reveals a small degree of bridging of the polymer chains by the surfactant. Above the cac, the viscosity drops, indicating that the polymer chains undergo a rapid collapse. At higher surfactant concentrations, light scattering shows the existence of larger structures, which are surprisingly monodisperse and whose size increases with surfactant concentration. At still higher surfactant concentrations, a classical strong associative phase separation takes place. During the evolution of bulk properties, the surface tension remains constant, suggesting that the surface aggregates remain unchanged.

14. Ultrafine Selective Metal-Complexing Nanoparticles:  Synthesis by Microemulsion Copolymerization, Binding Capacity, and Ligand Accessibility

Abstract

Stable translucent aqueous suspensions of ligand-functionalized nanoparticles, with average diameters ranging from 12 to 20 nm and containing from 0.25 to up to 0.75 mmol of ligand/g, are readily obtained by copolymerization in oil-in-water microemulsions of a polymerizable tetraaza macrocycle, vinylbenzylcyclam (cyclam:  1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). These nanoparticles exhibit a very high selectivity for cupric ions with binding capacities of up to 0.65 mmol of Cu/g as well as a remarkable ligand accessibility, deduced from spectrophotometric titration, with about 75% of the cyclam residues located near the surface for nanoparticles in the 12−13 nm range. Core−shell bimetallic nanoparticles are obtained by cation exchange. The cyclam-functionalized nanoparticles are comparable to high-generation PAMAM dendrimers in their ability to complex metals.

Abstract

The grafting of a cholesterol derivative onto a methylated cyclodextrin through a spacer arm produces an amphiphilic compound exhibiting high solubility in water. This new molecule was fully characterized in terms of chemical and optical purities by high resolution NMR and mass spectrometry. An analysis of its behavior in aqueous solution using surface tension measurements and light, small-angle X-ray, and neutron scattering techniques proved that it self-assembles into monodisperse spherical micelles with an average aggregation number of 24. The micelles can be described as two-shell objects, the cyclodextrin moieties being exposed to the aqueous medium, making them prone to include guest molecules in the cavities. These objects can therefore be of high interest for the targeting of biologically important molecules and especially for the delivery of drugs.

Abstract

The MIRACLES team., An overview is provided of the 15 neutron beam instruments making up the initial instrument suite of the European Spallation Source (ESS), and being made available to the neutron user community. The ESS neutron source consists of a high-power accelerator and target station, providing a unique long-pulse time structure of slow neutrons. The design considerations behind the time structure, moderator geometry and instrument layout are presented. The 15-instrument suite consists of two small-angle instruments, two reflectometers, an imaging beamline, two single-crystal diffractometers; one for macromolecular crystallography and one for magnetism, two powder diffractometers, and an engineering diffractometer, as well as an array of five inelastic instruments comprising two chopper spectrometers, an inverse-geometry single-crystal excitations spectrometer, an instrument for vibrational spectroscopy and a high-resolution backscattering spectrometer. The conceptual design, performance and scientific drivers of each of these instruments are described. All of the instruments are designed to provide breakthrough new scientific capability, not currently available at existing facilities, building on the inherent strengths of the ESS long-pulse neutron source of high flux, flexible resolution and large bandwidth. Each of them is predicted to provide world-leading performance at an accelerator power of 2 MW. This technical capability translates into a very broad range of scientific capabilities. The composition of the instrument suite has been chosen to maximise the breadth and depth of the scientific impact of the early years of the ESS, and provide a solid base for completion and further expansion of the facility., Some of the work described here is part of projects that have received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research programme: SINE 2020 under grant agreement number 654000, BrightnESS under grant agreement number 676548, and SoNDe under grant agreement number 654124. Abstract

Squalene based nanoparticles obtained via nanoprecipitation are promising candidates as efficient anti-cancer drugs. In order to highlight their preparation process and to facilitate further clinical translation, the present study enlightens the paramount role of the solvent in the formation of these nanomedicines. Three different squalene-based nanoparticles, i.e. squalenic acid, deoxycytidine squalene and gemcitabine squalene, have been investigated before and after organic solvent evaporation. Size and structural analysis by Small Angle Neutron Scattering revealed that droplets' size was uniquely controlled by the solvent composition (ethanol-water), which evolved during their gradual formation. The particles were preferably swollen by water and the swelling increased when less ethanol was present. Either coalescence or fragmentation was observed depending on the increase or decrease of the ethanol content, supporting an equilibrium control of the size. Moreover, a high water swelling was observed for the three local organization of the nanodroplets (hexagonal for gemcitabine squalene, cubic for deoxycytidine and not structured for squalenic acid) and could be the source of the previously reported efficiency of related anti-cancer squalene based nanomedicines.

Abstract

We studied the effect of gravity on cerebral cortical blood flow (CBF), mean arterial blood pressure (BPa) and heart rate in six rabbits exposed to parabolic flights. The CBF was obtained using a laser-Doppler probe fixed on to a cranial window. Before weightlessness, the animals were exposed to chest-to-back directed acceleration (1.8-2.0 g). The CBF values were expressed as a percentage of CBFo (mean CBF during 60 s before the 1st parabola). Propranolol (1 mg x kg[-1] i.v.) was given after the 11th parabola and pentobarbital (12-15 mg x kg[-1] i.v.) after the 16th parabola. Before the administration of the drugs, CBF increased (P < 0.01) during hypergravity [i.e. maximal CBF 151 (SD 64)% CBFo. Simultaneously BPa increased [maximal BPa, 119 (SD 11) mmHg (P < 0.01)]. At the onset of weightlessness, CBF and BPa reached maximal values [194 (SD 96)% CBFo (P < 0.01) and 127 (SD 19) mmHg, (P < 0.01) respectively]. The microgravity-induced increase in CBF was transient since CBF returned to its baseline value after 8 (SD 2) s of microgravity. After propranolol administration, CBF was not statistically different during hypergravity but an elevation of CBF was still observed in weightlessness. The increases in CBF and BPa also persisted during weightlessness after pentobarbital administration. These data would indicate that CBF of nonanesthetized rabbits increases during the first seconds of weightlessness and demonstrate the involvement of rapid active regulatory mechanisms since CBF returned to control values within 8 (SD 2) s. We concluded that this elevation in blood flow was not related to stress because it persisted after the administration of propranolol and pentobarbital.

Abstract

Cerebral cortical blood flow (CBF) was measured in 6 rabbits during parabolic flight maneuvers (20 s of weightlessness). During the first seconds of weightlessness, CBF increased up to 100% when compared with CBF at 1 G. Since this transient increase (5 s) was not modified when propranolol or pentobarbital was given to the animals, one can hypothesize that it was not related to stress.
