Thin elastic two-dimensionnal systems under compressive stresses may relieve part of their stretching energy by developing out of plane undulations. We investigate experimentally and theoretically the indentation of an elastic disk supported by a circular ring and show that compressive stresses are relieved via two different routes : either developing \textit{buckles} which are spread over the system or developing a \textit{d-cone} where deformation is concentrated in a subregion of the system. We characterize the indentation threshold for wrinkles or d-cone existence as a function of aspect ratio.

Biofilms are spatially organized microorganism colonies embedded in a self-produced matrix, conferring to the microbial community resistance to environmental stresses. Motile bacteria have been observed swimming in the matrix of pathogenic exogeneous host biofilms. This observation opened new promising routes for deleterious biofilms biocontrol: these bacterial swimmers enhance biofilm vascularization for chemical treatment or could deliver biocontrol agent by microbial hitchhiking or local synthesis. %\cite{muok2021microbial,yu2020hitchhiking,samad2017swimming}. Hence, characterizing swimmer trajectories in the biofilm matrix is of particular interest to understand and optimize its biocontrol.In this study, a new methodology is developed to analyze time-lapse confocal laser scanning images to describe and compare the swimming trajectories of bacterial swimmers populations and their adaptations to the biofilm structure. The method is based on the inference of a kinetic model of swimmer population including mechanistic interactions with the host biofilm. After validation on synthetic data, the methodology is implemented on images of three different motile {Bacillus species swimming in a Staphylococcus aureus biofilm. The fitted model allows to stratify the swimmer populations by their swimming behavior and provides insights into the mechanisms deployed by the micro-swimmers to adapt their swimming traits to the biofilm matrix.

We study the deflection by gravity of a circular elastic disk deposited on a rigid support. The axisymmetric deflection induces a compressive orthoradial stresses which leads to a wrinkling instability above a critical threshold of the dimensionless gravity force. We study this instability by a combination of experiments, numerical simulations and analytical tools, with a particular focus on the role of geometry. We show that aspect ratio is a crucial parameter that controls both the threshold of instability and the most unstable mode. The influence of this parameter on the threshold can be catched by introducing a new nondimensionalization of the transverse load.

In the framework of quantum open systems, that is, simple quantum systems coupled to quantum baths, our aim is to characterize those actions of the quantum environment which give rise to dynamics dictated by classical noises. First, we consider the discrete time scheme, through the model of repeated quantum interactions. We explore those unitary interactions which make the environment acting as if it were a classical noise, that is, dynamics which ought to random walks on the unitary group of the small system. We show that this characterization is intimately related to the notion of complex obtuse random variables. These particular random variables have an associated 3-tensor whose symmetries make it diagonalizable in some orthonormal basis. We show how this diagonalisation entirely describes the behavior of the random walk associated to the action of the environment. In particular this 3-tensor and its diagonalization characterize the behavior of the continuous-time limits; they characterize the directions along which the limit process is of diffusive or of Poisson nature., Comment: 33 pages

This papers addresses the connection between two classical models of phase transition phenomena describing different stages of the growth of clusters. The Becker-D\"oring model (BD) describes discrete-sized clusters through an infinite set of ordinary differential equations. The Lifshitz-Slyozov equation (LS) is a transport partial differential equation on the continuous half-line $x\in (0,+\infty)$. We introduce a scaling parameter $\varepsilon>0$, which accounts for the grid size of the state space in the BD model, and recover the LS model in the limit $\varepsilon\to 0$. The connection has been already proven in the context of outgoing characteristic at the boundary $x=0$ for the LS model, when small clusters tend to shrink. The main novelty of this work resides in a new estimate on the growth of small clusters, which behave at a fast time scale. We investigate unitary operators acting on a tensor product space, with the property that the quantum channels they generate, via the Stinespring dilation theorem, are of a particular type, independently of the state of the ancilla system in the Stinespring relation. The types of quantum channels we consider are those of interest in quantum information theory: unitary conjugations, constant channels, unital channels, mixed unitary channels, PPT channels, and entanglement breaking channels. For some of the classes of bipartite unitary operators corresponding to the above types of channels, we provide explicit characterizations, necessary and/or sufficient conditions for membership, and we compute the dimension of the corresponding algebraic variety. We investigate the connection between two classical models of phase transition phenomena, the (discrete size) stochastic Becker-D\"oring, a continous time Markov chain model, and the (continuous size) deterministic Lifshitz-Slyozov model, a nonlinear transport partial differential equation. For general coefficients and initial data, we introduce a scaling parameter and prove that the empirical measure associated to the stochastic Becker-D\"oring system converges in law to the weak solution of the Lifshitz-Slyozov equation when the parameter goes to 0. Contrary to previous studies, we use a weak topology that includes the boundary of the state space (\ie\ the size $x=0$) allowing us to rigorously derive a boundary value for the Lifshitz-Slyozov model in the case of incoming characteristics. The condition reads $\lim_{x\to 0} (a(x)u(t)-b(x))f(t,x) = \alpha u(t)^2$ where $f$ is the volume distribution function, solution of the Lifshitz-Slyozov equation, $a$ and $b$ the aggregation and fragmentation rates, $u$ the concentration of free particles and $\alpha$ a nucleation constant emerging from the microscopic model. It is the main novelty of this work and it answers to a question that has been conjectured or suggested by both mathematicians and physicists. The structure of uniformly continuous quantum Markov semigroups with atomic decoherence-free subalgebra is established providing a naturaldecomposition of a Markovian open quantum system into its noiseless (decoherence-free) and irreducible (ergodic) components. This leads to a new characterisation of the structure of invariant states and a new method for finding decoherence-free subsystems and subspaces. Examples are presented to illustrate these results.

We consider the physical model of a classical mechanical system (called "small system") undergoing repeated interactions with a chain of identical small pieces (called "environment"). This physical setup constitutes an advantageous way of implementing dissipation for classical systems, it is at the same time Hamiltonian and Markovian. This kind of model has already been studied in the context of quantum mechanical systems, where it was shown to give rise to quantum Langevin equations in the limit of continuous time interactions ([2]), but it has never been considered for classical mechanical systems yet. The aim of this article is to compute the continuous limit of repeated interactions for classical systems and to prove that they give rise to particular stochastic differential equations in the limit. In particular we recover the usual Langevin equations associated to the action of heat baths. In order to obtain these results, we consider the discrete-time dynamical system induced by Hamilton's equations and the repeated interactions. We embed it into a continuous-time dynamical system and we compute the limit when the time step goes to 0. This way we obtain a discrete-time approximation of stochastic differential equation, considered as a deterministic dynamical system on the Wiener space, which is not exactly of the usual Euler scheme type. We prove the Lp and almost sure convergence of this scheme. We end up with applications to concrete physical exemples such as a charged particule in an uniform electric field or a harmonic interaction. We obtain the usual Langevin equation for the action of a heat bath when considering a damped harmonic oscillator as the small system.

We report the experimental studies on interaction of two vesicles trapped in a microfluidic analog of four-roll mill, where a plane linear flow is realized. We found that the dynamics of a single vesicle is significantly altered by the presence of another vesicle at separation distances up to about 3.2 \div 3.7 times of effective radius of the vesicles. This is supported by direct measurements of a single vesicle back-reaction on the velocity field. Thus, the experiment provides the lower bound for the interaction scale of vesicles and so the corresponding upper bound for the volume fraction \phi=0.08 \div 0.13 of non-interacting vesicle suspensions., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, PRE accepted for publication

Despite the recent upsurge of theoretical reduced models for vesicle shape dynamics, comparisons with experiments have not been accomplished. We review the implications of some of the recently proposed models for vesicle dynamics, especially the Tumbling-Trembling domain regions of the phase plane and show that they all fail to capture the essential behavior of real vesicles for excess areas, \Delta, greater than 0.4.
