Recently, a kind of finite-temperature pseudo-transition was observed in several quasi-one-dimensional models. In this work, we consider a genuine one-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the atomic limit, influenced by an external magnetic field and with the arbitrary number of particles controlled by the chemical potential. The one-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the atomic limit was initially studied in the seventies and has been investigated over the past decades, but it still surprises us today with its fascinating properties. We rigorously analyze its low-temperature behavior using the transfer matrix technique and provide accurate numerical results. Our analysis confirms that there is an anomalous behavior in the half-filled band, specifically occurring between the alternating pair (AP) and paramagnetic (PM) phases at zero temperature. Previous investigations did not deeply identify this anomalous behavior, maybe due to the numerical simplicity of the model, but from analytical point of view this is not so easy to manipulate algebraically because one needs to solve an algebraic cubic equation. In this study, we explore this behavior and clearly distinguish the pseudo-transition, which could easily be mistaken with a real phase transition. This anomalous behavior mimics features of both first- and second-order phase transitions. The $S=1/2$ hyperkagome-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet allows to study the interplay of geometrical frustration and quantum as well as thermal fluctuations in three dimensions. We use 16 terms of a high-temperature series expansion complemented by the entropy-method interpolation to examine the specific heat and the uniform susceptibility of this model. We obtain thermodynamic quantities for several possible scenarios determined by the behavior of the specific heat as $T\to 0$: A power-law decay with the exponent $\alpha=1,2$ and also $3$ (gapless energy spectrum) or an exponential decay (gapped energy spectrum). All scenarios give rise to a low-temperature peak in $c(T)$ (almost a shoulder for $\alpha=1$) at $T<0.05$, i.e., well below the main high-temperature peak. The functional form of the uniform susceptibility $\chi(T)$ below about $T=0.5$ depends strongly not only on the chosen scenario but also on an input parameter $\chi_0\equiv\chi(T=0)$. An estimate for the ground-state energy $e_0$ depends on the adopted specific scenario but is expected to lie between $-0.441$ and $-0.435$. In addition to the entropy-method interpolation we use the finite-temperature Lanczos method to calculate $c(T)$ and $\chi(T)$ for finite lattices of $N=24$ and $36$ sites. A combined view on both methods leads us to favor the gapless scenario with $\alpha=2$ (but $\alpha=1$ cannot be excluded) and finite $\chi_0$ around $0.1$., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We examine a single-file chain of ammonia molecules in a carbon nanotube. To this end, we use i) molecular dynamics simulations (combined with the charges for ammonia nitrogen and hydrogen obtained from quantum chemistry) and ii) lattice-model calculations [M.~Druchok {\it et al.}, J. We apply the rotation-invariant Green's function method to study the finite-temperature properties of a $S{=}1/2$ sawtooth-chain (also called $\Delta$-chain) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model at the fully frustrated point when the exchange couplings along the straight-line and zig-zag paths are equal. We also use 13 terms of high-temperature expansion series and interpolation methods to get thermodynamic quantities for this model. We check the obtained predictions for observable quantities by comparison with numerics for finite systems. Recently, X.Ma et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 027402 (2017)] have suggested that water molecules encapsulated in (6,5) single-wall carbon nanotube experience a temperature-induced quasiphase transition around 150 K interpreted as changes in the water dipoles orientation. We discuss further this temperature-driven quasiphase transition performing quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations and, most importantly, suggesting a simple lattice model to reproduce the properties of the one-dimensionally confined finite arrays of water molecules. The lattice model takes into account not only the short-range and long-range interactions but also the rotations in a narrow tube and the both ingredients provide an explanation for a temperature-driven orientational ordering of the water molecules, which persists within a relatively wide temperature range., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

We apply the rotation-invariant Green's function method (RGM) to study the spin $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on a one-dimensional sawtooth lattice, which has two nonequivalent sites in the unit cell. We check the RGM predictions for observable quantities by comparison with the exact-diagonalization and finite-temperature-Lanczos calculations. We discuss the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of this model in relation to the mineral atacamite Cu$_2$Cl(OH)$_3$ complementing the RGM outcomes by results of other approaches., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Over the last decade, the interest in the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) on the square-kagome (also called shuriken) lattice has been growing as a model system of quantum magnetism with a quantum paramagnetic ground state, flat-band physics near the saturation field, and quantum scars. Here, we present large-scale numerical investigations of the specific heat $C(T)$, the entropy $S(T)$ as well as the susceptibility $\chi(T)$ by means of the finite-temperature Lanczos method for system sizes of $N=18,24,30,36,42,48$, and $N=54$. We find that the specific heat exhibits a low-temperature shoulder below the major maximum which can be attributed to low-lying singlet excitations filling the singlet-triplet gap, which is significantly larger than the singlet-singlet gap. This observation is further supported by the behavior of the entropy $S(T)$, where a change in the curvature is present just at about $T/J=0.2$, the same temperature where the shoulder in $C$ sets in. For the susceptibility the low-lying singlet excitations are irrelevant, and the singlet-triplet gap leads to an exponentially activated low-temperature behavior. The maximum in $\chi(T)$ is found at a pretty low temperature $T_{\rm max}/J=0.146$ (for $N=42$) compared to $T_{\rm max}/J=0.935$ for the unfrustrated square-lattice HAF signaling the crucial role of frustration also for the susceptibility. We find a striking similarity of our square-kagome data with the corresponding ones for the kagome HAF down to very low $T$. The magnetization process featuring plateaus and jumps and the field dependence of the specific heat that exhibits characteristic peculiarities attributed to the existence of a flat one-magnon band are as well discussed., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, version as published in Phys. Recently, a surprising low-temperature behavior has been revealed in a two-leg ladder Ising model with trimer rungs (Weiguo Yin, arXiv:2006.08921). Motivated by these findings, we study this model from another perspective and demonstrate that the reported observations are related to a critical phenomenon in the standard Ising chain. We also discuss a related curiosity, namely, the emergence of a power-law behavior characterized by quasicritical exponents., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We consider the strongly anisotropic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model on the sawtooth-chain lattice with ferromagnetic longitudinal interaction $J^{zz}=\Delta J$ and aniferromagnetic transversal interaction $J^{xx}=J^{yy}=J>0$. At $\Delta=-1/2$ the lowest one-magnon excitation band is dispersionless (flat) leading to a massively degenerate set of ground states. Interestingly, this model admits a three-coloring representation of the ground-state manifold [H.~J.~Changlani et at., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 120}, 117202 (2018)]. We characterize this ground-state manifold and elaborate the low-temperature thermodynamics of the system. We illustrate the manifestation of the flat-band physics of the anisotropic model by comparison with two isotropic flat-band Heisenberg sawtooth chains. The spin-half pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet (PHAF) is one of the most challenging problems in the field of highly frustrated quantum magnetism. Stimulated by the seminal paper of M.~Planck [M.~Planck, Verhandl. Dtsch. phys. Ges. {\bf 2}, 202-204 (1900)] we calculate thermodynamic properties of this model by interpolating between the low- and high-temperature behavior. For that we follow ideas developed in detail by B.~Bernu and G.~Misguich and use for the interpolation the entropy exploiting sum rules [the ``entropy method'' (EM)]. We complement the EM results for the specific heat, the entropy, and the susceptibility by corresponding results obtained by the finite-temperature Lanczos method (FTLM) for a finite lattice of $N=32$ sites as well as by the high-temperature expansion (HTE) data. We find that due to pronounced finite-size effects the FTLM data for $N=32$ are not representative for the infinite system below $T \approx 0.7$. A similar restriction to $T \gtrsim 0.7$ holds for the HTE designed for the infinite PHAF. By contrast, the EM provides reliable data for the whole temperature region for the infinite PHAF. We find evidence for a gapless spectrum leading to a power-law behavior of the specific heat at low $T$ and for a single maximum in $c(T)$ at $T\approx 0.25$. For the susceptibility $\chi(T)$ we find indications of a monotonous increase of $\chi$ upon decreasing of $T$ reaching $\chi_0 \approx 0.1$ at $T=0$. Moreover, the EM allows to estimate the ground-state energy to $e_0\approx -0.52$., Comment: 17 pages, 24 figures

We consider the spin-1/2 isotropic $XY$ chain in an external magnetic field directed along $z$ axis with periodically varying $g$-factors. To reveal the effects of regularly alternating $g$-factors, we calculate various static and dynamic equilibrium quantities in the ground state and at finite temperatures. We demonstrate that because of the regularly alternating $g$-factors the saturation field may disappear and the field dependence of the susceptibility in the ground state has additional logarithmic singularity at zero field. Moreover, the zero-field susceptibility has a logarithmic singularity as $T\to 0$. Furthermore, the dynamic structure factors exhibit much more structure in the "wave vector -- frequency" plane that can be traced out to modifications of the two-fermion excitation continua which exclusively determine $S_{zz}(\kappa,\omega)$ and dominate the properties of $S_{xx}(\kappa,\omega)$. We discuss what changes can be observed in dynamic experiments on the corresponding substances.

Recently, it has been rigorously verified that several one-dimensional (1D) spin models may exhibit a peculiar pseudo-transition accompanied with anomalous response of thermodynamic quantities in a close vicinity of pseudo-critical temperature. In the present work we will introduce and exactly solve a mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain in an external magnetic field as another particular example of 1D lattice-statistical model with short-range interactions that displays a pseudo-transition of this type. The investigated model exhibits at zero temperature three ferrimagnetic phases, three frustrated phases, and one saturated paramagnetic phase. The ground-state phase diagram involves five unusual interfaces (phase boundaries), at which the residual entropy per site equals to a larger entropy of one of two coexisting phases. Four such interfaces are between a non-degenerate ferrimagnetic phase and a macroscopically degenerate frustrated phase, while one interface is between two non-degenerate ferrimagnetic phases. Though thermal excitations typically destroy all fingerprints of zero-temperature phase transitions of 1D lattice-statistical models with short-range forces, the mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain is quite robust with respect to thermal excitations and it displays peculiar pseudo-transitions close to all five aforementioned interfaces., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We discuss the origin of an enigmatic low-temperature behavior of one-dimensional decorated spin systems which was coined the pseudo-transition. Tracing out the decorated parts results in the standard Ising-chain model with temperature-dependent parameters and the unexpected low-temperature behavior of thermodynamic quantities and correlations of the decorated spin chains can be tracked down to the critical point of the standard Ising-chain model at ${\sf H}=0$ and ${\sf T}=0$. We illustrate this perspective using as examples the spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ diamond chain, the coupled spin-electron double-tetrahedral chain, and the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain., Comment: 12 pages, 17 figures

We use the rotation-invariant Green's function method (RGM) and the high-temperature expansion (HTE) to study the thermodynamic properties of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice. We discuss the excitation spectra as well as various thermodynamic quantities, such as spin correlations, uniform susceptibility, specific heat and static and dynamical structure factors. For the ground state we present RGM data for arbitrary spin quantum numbers $S$. At finite temperatures we focus on the extreme quantum cases $S=1/2$ and $S=1$. We do not find indications for magnetic long-range order for any value of $S$. We discuss the width of the pinch point in the static structure factor in dependence on temperature and spin quantum number. We compare our data with experimental results for the pyrochlore compound NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$ ($S=1$). Thus, our results for the dynamical structure factor agree well with the experimentally observed features at 3 \ldots 8~meV for NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$. We analyze the static structure factor ${S}_{\bf q}$ to find regions of maximal ${S}_{\bf q}$. The high-temperature series of the ${S}_{\bf q}$ provide a fingerprint of weak {\it order by disorder} selection of a collinear spin structure, where (classically) the total spin vanishes on each tetrahedron and neighboring tetrahedra are dephased by $\pi$., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures

One-dimensional systems with short-range interactions cannot exhibit a long-range order at nonzero temperature. However, there are some particular one-dimensional models, such as the Ising-Heisenberg spin models with a variety of lattice geometries, which exhibit unexpected behavior similar to the discontinuous or continuous temperature-driven phase transition. Although these pseudo-transitions are not true temperature-driven transitions showing only abrupt changes or sharp peaks in thermodynamic quantities, they may be confused while interpreting experimental data. Here we consider the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Ising-XYZ diamond chain in the regime when the model exhibits temperature-driven pseudo-transitions. We provide a detailed investigation of several correlation functions between distant spins that illustrates the properties of quasi-phases separated by pseudo-transitions. Inevitably, all correlation functions show the evidence of pseudo-transition, which are supported by the analytical solutions and, besides we provide a rigorous analytical investigation around the pseudo-critical temperature. It is worth to mention that the correlation functions between distant spins have an extremely large correlation length at pseudo-critical temperature., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures

Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic intradimer interaction and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interdimer interaction are investigated in a highly frustrated parameter region, where localized many-magnon eigenstates provide the most dominant contribution to magnetothermodynamics. Low-energy states of the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer can be accordingly found from a mapping correspondence with an effective triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Ising model in a field. A description based on the effective Ising model implies that the frustrated Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the ferromagnetic interdimer coupling displays in a zero-temperature magnetization curve discontinuous magnetization jump, which is reduced upon increasing of temperature until a continuous field-driven phase transition from the Ising universality class is reached at a certain critical temperature. The frustrated Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic interdimer coupling contrarily exhibits multistep magnetization curve with intermediate plateaus at one-third and two-thirds of the saturation magnetization, whereas discontinuous magnetization jumps observable at zero temperature change to continuous field-driven phase transitions from the universality class of three-state Potts model at sufficiently low temperatures. Exact results and Monte Carlo simulations of the effective Ising model are confronted with full exact diagonalization data for the Heisenberg triangular bilayer in order to corroborate these findings., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, presented at HFM 2018 and ICM 2018 conferences

The search for flat-band solid-state realizations is a crucial issue to verify or to challenge theoretical predictions for quantum many-body flat-band systems. For frustrated quantum magnets flat bands lead to various unconventional properties related to the existence of localized many-magnon states. The recently synthesized magnetic compound Ba$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ seems to be an almost perfect candidate to observe these features in experiments. We develop a theory for Ba$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ by adapting the localized-magnon concept to this compound. We first show that our theory describes the known experimental facts and then we propose new experimental studies to detect a field-driven phase transition related to a Wigner-crystal-like ordering of localized magnons at low temperatures., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted in Physical Review B

We use the rotation-invariant Green's function method (RGM) and the high-temperature expansion (HTE) to study the thermodynamic properties of the spin-$S$ Heisenberg ferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice. We examine the excitation spectra as well as various thermodynamic quantities, such as the order parameter (magnetization), the uniform static susceptibility, the correlation length, the spin-spin correlations, and the specific heat, as well as the static and dynamic structure factors. We discuss the influence of the spin quantum number $S$ on the temperature dependence of these quantities. We compare our results for the pyrochlore ferromagnet with the corresponding ones for the simple-cubic lattice both having the same coordination number $z=6$. Frustrated bilayer quantum magnets have attracted attention as flat-band spin systems with unconventional thermodynamic properties. We study the low-temperature properties of a frustrated honeycomb-lattice bilayer spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ isotropic ($XXX$) Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field by means of an effective low-energy theory using exact diagonalizations and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our main focus is on the magnetization curve and the temperature dependence of the specific heat indicating a finite-temperature phase transition in high magnetic fields., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain with the intraplaquette and monomer-plaquette interactions are examined within a two-component lattice-gas model of hard-core monomers, which takes into account all low-lying energy modes in a highly frustrated parameter space involving the monomer-tetramer, localized many-magnon and fully polarized ground states. It is shown that the developed lattice-gas model satisfactorily describes all pronounced features of the low-temperature magnetization process and the magneto-thermodynamics such as abrupt changes of the isothermal magnetization curves, a double-peak structure of the specific heat or a giant magnetocaloric effect., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, contribution to SCES2017 conference

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain with regularly alternating monomeric and square-plaquette sites is investigated using various analytical and numerical methods: variational technique, localized-magnon approach, exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The model belongs to the class of flat-band systems and it has a rich ground-state phase diagram including phases with spontaneously broken translational symmetry. Moreover, it exhibits an anomalous low-temperature thermodynamics close to continuous or discontinuous field-driven quantum phase transitions between three quantum ferrimagnetic phases, tetramer-hexamer phase, monomer-tetramer phase, localized-magnon phase and two different spin-liquid phases. If the intra-plaquette coupling is at least twice as strong as the monomer-plaquette coupling, the variational method furnishes a rigorous proof of the monomer-tetramer ground state in a low-field region and the localized-magnon approach provides an exact evidence of a single magnon trapped at each square plaquette in a high-field region. In the rest of parameter space we have numerically studied the ground-state phase diagram and magnetization process using DMRG and ED methods. It is shown that the zero-temperature magnetization curve may involve up to four intermediate plateaus at zero, one-fifth, two-fifth and three-fifth of the saturation magnetization, while the specific heat exhibits a striking low-temperature peak in a vicinity of discontinuous quantum phase transitions., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a bilayer honeycomb lattice including interlayer frustration in the presence of an external magnetic field. In the vicinity of the saturation field, we map the low-energy states of this quantum system onto the spatial configurations of hard hexagons on a honeycomb lattice. As a result, we can construct effective classical models (lattice-gas as well as Ising models) on the honeycomb lattice to calculate the properties of the frustrated quantum Heisenberg spin system in the low-temperature regime. We perform classical Monte Carlo simulations for a hard-hexagon model and adopt known results for an Ising model to discuss the finite-temperature order-disorder phase transition that is driven by a magnetic field at low temperatures. We also discuss an effective-model description around the ideal frustration case and find indications for a spin-flop like transition in the considered isotropic spin model., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

We discuss the effect of an external electric field on the wetting of a solid surface by liquid. To this end, we use a model of the two-level-atom fluid for which the changes in interatomic interactions due to the presence of the field can be found using quantum-mechanical perturbation theory. Constructing the grand potential functional, we perform the standard calculations of Young's equilibrium contact angle. To illustrate a simple mean-field-like approach for examining quantum phase transitions we consider the $J-J^\prime$ quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice. The exchange couplings $J$ and $J^\prime$ are competing with each other. The ratio $J^\prime/J$ is the control parameter and its change drives the transition. We adopt a variational ansatz, calculate the ground-state energy as well as the order parameter and describe the quantum phase transition inherent in the model. This description corresponds completely to the standard Landau theory of phase transitions. We also discuss how to generalize such an approach for more complicated quantum spin models., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

We consider the standard repulsive Hubbard model with a flat lowest-energy band for two one-dimensional lattices (diamond chain and ladder) as well as for a two-dimensional lattice (bilayer) at half filling of the flat band. The considered models do not fall in the class of Mielke-Tasaki flat-band ferromagnets, since they do not obey the connectivity conditions. However, the ground-state ferromagnetism can emerge, if the flat band becomes dispersive. To study this kinetic-energy-driven ferromagnetism we use perturbation theory and exact diagonalization of finite lattices. We find as a typical scenario that small and moderate dispersion may lead to a ferromagnetic ground state for sufficiently large on-site Hubbard repulsion $U>U_c$, where $U_c$ increases monotonically with the acquired bandwidth. However, we also observe for some specific parameter cases, that (i) ferromagnetism appears at already very small $U_c$, (ii) ferromagnetism does not show up at all, (iii) the critical on-site repulsion $U_c$ is a nonmonotonic function of the bandwidth, or that (iv) a critical bandwidth is needed to open the window for ground-state ferromagnetism., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

We consider a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain, which is an exactly solvable model when assuming part of the exchange interactions as Heisenberg ones and another part as Ising ones. A small $XY$ part is afterwards perturbatively added to the Ising couplings, which enabled us to derive an effective Hamiltonian describing the low-energy behavior of the modified but full quantum version of the initial model. The effective model is much simpler and free of frustration. It is shown that the $XY$ part added to the originally Ising interaction gives rise to the spin-liquid phase with continuously varying magnetization, which emerges in between the magnetization plateaus and is totally absent in the initial hybrid diamond-chain model. We illustrate the magnetoelectric effect conditioned by the Katsura-Nagaosa-Balatsky (KNB) mechanism within the frames of exactly solvable spin-1/2 $XY$ chains. Due to three-spin interactions which are present in our consideration, the magnetization (polarization) is influenced by the electric (magnetic) field even in the absence of the magnetic (electric) field. We also discuss a magnetoelectrocaloric effect examining the entropy changes under the isothermal varying of the magnetic or/and electric field., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

In this review we recapitulate the basic features of the flat-band spin systems and briefly summarize earlier studies in the field. Main emphasis is made on recent developments which include results for both spin and electron flat-band models. In particular, for flat-band spin systems we highlight field-driven phase transitions for frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets at low temperatures, chiral flat-band states, as well as the effect of a slight dispersion of a previously strictly flat band due to nonideal lattice geometry. For electronic systems, we discuss the universal low-temperature behavior of several flat-band Hubbard models, the emergence of ground-state ferromagnetism in the square-lattice Tasaki-Hubbard model and the related Pauli-correlated percolation problem, as well as the dispersion-driven ground-state ferromagnetism in flat-band Hubbard systems. We consider the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg model on a frustrated diamond-chain lattice in a $z$- or $x$-aligned external magnetic field. We use the strong-coupling approach to elaborate an effective description in the low-temperature strong-field regime. The obtained effective models are spin-1/2 $XY$ chains which are exactly solvable through the Jordan-Wigner fermionization. We perform exact-diagonalization studies of the magnetization curves to test the quality of the effective description. We investigate a mechanism to establish ground-state ferromagnetism in flat-band Hubbard systems based on a kind of {\it order-from-disorder} effect driven by dispersion. As a paradigm we consider a frustrated diamond chain, where for ideal diamond geometry the lowest one-electron band is flat, but the ground state remains paramagnetic for arbitrary on-site repulsion $U$. We focus on half filling of the flat band. By using numerical and analytical arguments we present the ground-state phase diagram for a distorted diamond chain, i.e., the former flat band becomes dispersive. Driven by the interplay of dispersion and interaction the ground state is ferromagnetic if the interaction exceeds a critical value $U_c$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice with almost dispersionless lowest magnon band. For a general exchange coupling geometry we elaborate low-energy effective Hamiltonians which emerge at high magnetic fields. The effective model to describe the low-energy degrees of freedom of the initial frustrated quantum spin model is the (unfrustrated) square-lattice spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model in a $z$-aligned magnetic field. For the effective model we perform quantum Monte Carlo simulations to discuss the low-temperature properties of the square-kagome quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet at high magnetic fields. We clarify the existence of several magnetization plateaux for the kagome $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model in a magnetic field. Using approximate or exact localized magnon eigenstates, we are able to describe in a similar manner the plateau states that occur for magnetization per site $m=1/3$, $5/9$, and $7/9$ of the saturation value. We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on three frustrated lattices (the diamond chain, the dimer-plaquette chain and the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice) with almost dispersionless lowest magnon band. Eliminating high-energy degrees of freedom at high magnetic fields, we construct low-energy effective Hamiltonians which are much simpler than the initial ones. These effective Hamiltonians allow a more extended analytical and numerical analysis. In addition to the standard strong-coupling perturbation theory we also use a localized-magnon based approach leading to a substantial improvement of the strong-coupling approximation. We perform extensive exact diagonalization calculations to check the quality of different effective Hamiltonians by comparison with the initial models. Based on the effective-model description we examine the low-temperature properties of the considered frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets in the high-field regime. We also apply our approach to explore thermodynamic properties for a generalized diamond spin chain model suitable to describe azurite at high magnetic fields. Interesting features of these highly frustrated spin models consist in a steep increase of the entropy at very small temperatures and a characteristic extra low-temperature peak in the specific heat. We calculate the ground-state compressibility of a deformable spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to discuss how a quantum critical point inherent in this spin system may manifest itself in the elastic properties of the underlying lattice. We compare these results with the corresponding ones for the spin-1/2 Ising chain in a longitudinal or transverse field and the spin-1/2 $XX$ chain in a transverse field. The inverse compressibility of the spin-1/2 $XX$ chain in a transverse field exhibits a hysteresis in a vicinity of quantum critical point that is accompanied with the finite jump of compressibility. Contrary to this, the inverse compressibility diminishes continuously close to a quantum critical point of the spin-1/2 Ising chain in a transverse field and the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising bond alternating chain., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We consider the exactly solvable spin-1/2 $XX$ chain with the three-spin interactions of the $XZX+YZY$ and $XZY-YZX$ types in an external (transverse) magnetic field. We calculate the entropy and examine the magnetocaloric effect for the quantum spin system. We discuss a relation between the cooling/heating efficiency and the ground-state phase diagram of the quantum spin model. We also compare ability to cool/heat in the vicinity of the quantum critical and triple points. We consider the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and the repulsive Hubbard model on two $N$-site one-dimensional lattices, which support dispersionless one-particle states corresponding to localized states on triangular trapping cells. We calculate the degeneracy of the ground states in the subspaces with $n\le n_{\max}$, $n_{\max}\propto N$ magnons or electrons as well as the contribution of these states (independent localized states) to thermodynamic quantities. Moreover, we discuss another class of low-lying eigenstates (so-called interacting localized states) and calculate their contribution to the partition function. We also discuss the effect of extra interactions, which lift the degeneracy present due to the chirality of the localized states on triangles. The localized states set an extra low-energy scale in the system and lead to a nonzero residual ground-state entropy and to one (or more) additional low-temperature peak(s) in the specific heat. Low-energy degrees of freedom in the presence of perturbations removing degeneracy owing to the chirality can be described in terms of an effective (pseudo)spin-1/2 transverse $XX$ chain., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Using a lattice-gas description of the low-energy degrees of freedom of the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the frustrated two-leg ladder and bilayer lattices we examine the magnetization process at low temperatures for these spin models. In both cases the emergent discrete degrees of freedom implicate a close relation of the frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet to the classical lattice gas with finite nearest-neighbor repulsion or, equivalently, to the Ising antiferromagnet in a uniform magnetic field. Using this relation we obtain analytical results for thermodynamically large systems in the one-dimensional case. We present exact results for the ground-state and thermodynamic properties of the spin-1/2 $XX$ chain with three-site interactions in a random (Lorentzian) transverse field. We discuss the influence of randomness on the quantum critical behavior known to be present in the nonrandom model. We find that at zero temperature the characteristic features of the quantum phase transition, such as kinks in the magnetization versus field curve, are smeared out by randomness. However, at low but finite temperatures signatures of the quantum critical behavior are preserved if the randomness is not too large. Even the quantum critical region may be slightly enlarged for very weak randomness. In addition to the exact results for Lorentzian randomness we present a more general discussion of an arbitrarily random transverse magnetic field based on the inspection of the moments of the density of states., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Based on exact diagonalization data for finite quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on two frustrated lattices (two-leg ladder and bilayer) and analytical arguments we map low-energy degrees of freedom of the spin models in a magnetic field on classical lattice-gas models. Further we use transfer-matrix calculations and classical Monte Carlo simulations to give a quantitative description of low-temperature thermodynamics of the quantum spin models. The classical lattice-gas model yields an excellent description of the quantum spin models up to quite large temperatures. The main peculiarity of the considered frustrated bilayer is a phase transition which occurs at low temperatures for a wide range of magnetic fields below the saturation magnetic field and belongs to the two-dimensional Ising model universality class., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

The Jordan-Wigner transformation is known as a powerful tool in condensed matter theory, especially in the theory of low-dimensional quantum spin systems. The aim of this chapter is to review the application of the Jordan-Wigner fermionization technique for calculating dynamic quantities of low-dimensional quantum spin models. After a brief introduction of the Jordan-Wigner transformation for one-dimensional spin one-half systems and some of its extensions for higher dimensions and higher spin values we focus on the dynamic properties of several low-dimensional quantum spin models. We start from the famous s=1/2 XX chain. As a first step we recall well-known results for dynamics of the z-spin-component fluctuation operator and then turn to the dynamics of the dimer and trimer fluctuation operators. The dynamics of the trimer fluctuations involves both the two-fermion (one particle and one hole) and the four-fermion (two particles and two holes) excitations. We discuss some properties of the two-fermion and four-fermion excitation continua. The four-fermion dynamic quantities are of intermediate complexity between simple two-fermion (like the zz dynamic structure factor) and enormously complex multi-fermion (like the xx or xy dynamic structure factors) dynamic quantities. Further we discuss the effects of dimerization, anisotropy of XY interaction, and additional Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on various dynamic quantities. Finally we consider the dynamic transverse spin structure factor $S_{zz}({\bf{k}},\omega)$ for the s=1/2 XX model on a spatially anisotropic square lattice which allows one to trace a one-to-two-dimensional crossover in dynamic quantities., Comment: 53 pages, 22 figures

We consider a spin-1/2 XY chain in a transverse (z) field with multi-site interactions. The additional terms introduced into the Hamiltonian involve products of spin components related to three adjacent sites. A Jordan-Wigner transformation leads to a simple bilinear Fermi form for the resulting Hamiltonian and hence the spin model admits a rigorous analysis. We point out the close relationships between several variants of the model which were discussed separately in previous studies. The ground-state phases (ferromagnet and two kinds of spin liquid) of the model are reflected in the dynamic structure factors of the spin chains, which are the main focus in this study. First we consider the zz dynamic structure factor reporting for this quantity a closed-form expression and analyzing the properties of the two-fermion (particle-hole) excitation continuum which governs the dynamics of transverse spin component fluctuations and of some other local operator fluctuations. Then we examine the xx dynamic structure factor which is governed by many-fermion excitations, reporting both analytical and numerical results. We discuss some easily recognized features of the dynamic structure factors which are signatures for the presence of the three-site interactions., Comment: 28 pages, 10 fugures

We study the repulsive Hubbard model both analytically and numerically on a family of highly frustrated lattices which have one-electron states localized on isolated trapping cells. We construct and count exact many-electron ground states for a wide range of electron densities and obtain closed-form expressions for the low-temperature thermodynamic quantities. Furthermore, we find that saturated ferromagnetism is obtained only for sufficiently high electron densities and large Hubbard repulsion $U$ while there is no finite average moment in the ground states at lower densities., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We examine dynamic structure factors of spin-1/2 chains with nearest-neighbor interactions of XX and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type, and with periodic and random changes in the sign of these interactions. This special kind of inhomogeneity can be eliminated from the Hamiltonian by suitable transformation of the spin variables. As a result, the dynamic structure factors of periodic or random chains can be computed from those of the uniform chains. Using the exact analytical and precise numerical results available for the uniform systems we illustrate the effects of regular alternation or random disorder on dynamic structure factors of quantum spin chains.

We consider the spin-1/2 anisotropic XY chain in a transverse (z) field with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction directed along z-axis in spin space to examine the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the zz, xx and yy dynamic structure factors. Using the Jordan-Wigner fermionization approach we analytically calculate the dynamic transverse spin structure factor. It is governed by a two-fermion excitation continuum. We analyze the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the two-fermion excitation continuum. Other dynamic structure factors which are governed by many-fermion excitations are calculated numerically. We discuss how the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction manifests itself in the dynamic properties of the quantum spin chain at various fields and temperatures.

We consider the spin-1/2 isotropic XY chain in a (z) transverse magnetic field with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction directed along the z-axis in spin space and examine the effects of the latter interaction on the zz, xx (yy) and xy (yx) dynamic structure factors. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction does not manifest itself in the zz dynamic quantities. In contrast, the xx (yy) and xy (yx) dynamic structure factors show dramatical changes owing to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Implications of our results for electron spin resonance experiments are briefly discussed.

The repulsive Hubbard model on a sawtooth chain exhibits a lowest single-electron band which is completely dispersionless (flat) for a specific choice of the hopping parameters. We construct exact many-electron ground states for electron fillings up to 1/4. We map the low-energy degrees of freedom of the electron model to a model of classical hard dimers on a chain and, as a result, obtain the ground-state degeneracy as well as closed-form expressions for the low-temperature thermodynamic quantities around a particular value of the chemical potential. We compare our analytical findings with complementary numerical data. The purpose of the present paper is two-fold. On the one hand, we review some recent studies on the low-temperature strong-field thermodynamic properties of frustrated quantum spin antiferromagnets which admit the so-called localized-magnon eigenstates. One the other hand, we provide some complementary new results. We use the density functional method to examine the properties of the nonuniform (two-phase) fluid of two-level atoms, a part of which is excited. Basing on the analysis of the equation of state of a gas of two-level atoms, a part of which is excited, we suggest a simple density functional of the grand thermodynamical potential. We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the frustrated bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperatures in the vicinity of the saturation magnetic field. The low-energy degrees of freedom of the spin model are mapped onto a hard-square gas on a square lattice. We use exact diagonalization data for finite spin systems to check the validity of such a description. Using a classical Monte Carlo method we give a quantitative description of the thermodynamics of the spin model at low temperatures around the saturation field. The main peculiarity of the considered two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet is related to a phase transition of the hard-square model on the square lattice, which belongs to the two-dimensional Ising model universality class. It manifests itself in a logarithmic (low-)temperature singularity of the specific heat of the spin system observed for magnetic fields just below the saturation field.
