Abstract

Abstract PandaX-4T is a ton-scale dark matter direct detection experiment using a dual-phase TPC technique at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Various ultra-low background technologies have been developed and applied to material screening for PandaX-4T, including HPGe gamma spectroscopy, ICP-MS, NAA, radon emanation measurement system, krypton assay station, and alpha detection system. Low background materials were selected to assemble the detector. Surface treatment procedures were investigated to further suppress radioactive background. Combining measured results and Monte Carlo simulation, the total material background rates of PandaX-4T in the energy region of 1–25 keVee are estimated to be (9.9 ± 1.9) × 10 −3 mDRU for electron recoil and (2.8 ± 0.6) × 10 −4 mDRU for nuclear recoil. In addition, natKr in the detector is estimated to be < 8 ppt.

Abstract

We present the constraints on the axial-vector and pseudo-scalar mediated WIMP-nucleus interactions from the PandaX-4T experiment, using the data set corresponding to a total exposure of 0.63 tonne⋅year. No significant signal excess is observed, and the most stringent constraints to date on the mediator mass are set for the axial-vector and pseudo-scalar simplified models. The maximum excluded mass of an axial-vector mediator is 825 GeV/c2 and that of a pseudo-scalar mediator is 106 GeV/c2. In addition, the upper limits on the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section for conventional neutron-only and proton-only interactions are derived.

Abstract

In the two-component Majorana dark matter model, one dark matter particle can scatter off the target nuclei, and turn into a slightly heavier component. In the framework of a simplified model with a vector boson mediator, both the tree-level and loop-level processes contribute to the signal in direct detection experiment. In this paper, we report the search results for such dark matter from PandaX-II experiment, using total data of the full 100.7 tonne⋅day exposure. No significant excess is observed, so strong constraints on the combined parameter space of mediator mass and dark matter mass are derived. With the complementary search results from collider experiments, a large range of parameter space can be excluded.

Abstract

Precise measurement of two-neutrino double beta decay (DBD) half-life is an important step for the searches of Majorana neutrinos with neutrinoless double beta decay. We report the measurement of DBD half-life of 136Xe using the PandaX-4T dual-phase Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with 3.7-tonne natural xenon and the first 94.9-day physics data release. The background model in the fiducial volume is well constrained in situ by events in the outer active region. With a 136Xe exposure of 15.5 kg-year, we establish the half-life as 2.27±0.03stat.±0.10syst.×1021 years. This is the first DBD half-life measurement with natural xenon and demonstrates the physics capability of a large-scale liquid xenon TPC in the field of rare event searches.

Abstract

We present PandaX-II constraints on candidate WIMP-nucleon effective interactions involving the nucleon or WIMP spin, including, in addition to standard axial spin-dependent (SD) scattering, various couplings among vector and axial currents, magnetic and electric dipole moments, and tensor interactions. The data set corresponding to a total exposure of 54-ton-days is reanalyzed to determine constraints as a function of the WIMP mass and isospin coupling. We obtain WIMP-nucleon cross section bounds of 1.6×10−41 cm2 and 9.0×10−42 cm2 (90% c.l.) for neutron-only SD and tensor coupling, respectively, for a mass MWIMP∼40GeV/c2. The SD limits are the best currently available for MWIMP>40GeV/c2. We show that PandaX-II has reached a sensitivity sufficient to probe a variety of other candidate spin-dependent interactions at the weak scale. 6. Progress of experimental studies on two-proton emission

Abstract

Radioactivity is one of the most significant characteristics of unstable nuclei, the familiar modes including α, β, γ decay and fission. Two-proton (2p) emission is an exotic radioactivity mode of nuclei in the proton drip-line area, which is very significant for studying the structure, mass and correlation between proton pair of extremely proton-rich nuclei and one of the frontiers in radioactive ion beam physics. In this article, progress of experimental studies on two-proton emission was briefly reviewed. Several experimental measurement methods were introduced. The identification method for the mechanism of two-proton emission was discussed. Two-proton emission was predicted to be existed in extremely proton-rich nuclei in 1960. For 2p emission from the ground state of a nucleus with long half-life, it was observed for the first time in 2002 due to the difficulty in the production of a candidate. Only few decay events were observed for the four proton drip-line nuclei with a long half-life ground state. For the detection of 2p emission process, the in-flight decay, implantation decay and optical time projection chamber (OTPC) plus CCD method are the three main experimental methods. The in-flight decay method is suitable for the candidate with very short half-life and almost inapplicable for the candidate with a half-life longer than 1 μs. The implantation decay method is suitable for the candidate with long half-life, especially for β-delayed decay nuclei. In this case, the measured decay signal will be very clear with low background due to the separation recording of the implantation and decay events. The OTPC plus CCD method could record a picture of 2p emission process directly for the candidate. Generally, there are three mechanisms for proton-rich nuclei to emit two protons: (1) 2He cluster emission; (2) three-body emission; (3) sequential emission. The 2He cluster emission is basically two protons constrained by the pair correlation into a quasi-bound singlet, i.e., 1S0 configuration. Such a quasi-bound state can only exist for very short time and then becomes separated after penetrating through the Coulomb barrier. Usually, the two-proton relative momentum and the opening angle distributions are used to identify the mechanism of 2p emission in experimental investigations. However, this method can only distinguish it being 2He cluster emission or not. For the three-body and sequential emissions, the key difference is the emission time between the two protons. The proton-proton momentum correlation function (also called HBT) method is a widely used analysis technique in nuclear physics, which can extract the emission time of a particle. It has been demonstrated that the three-body and sequential emissions could be distinguished by using the HBT method. The difficulty in the study of exotic radioactivity is the low production rate of the unstable nuclei in the drip-line area. The high-intensity heavy-ion accelerator facility (HIAF) under construction in China has an advantage of high beam intensity, the most frontier work in the field of exotic radioactivity for nuclei around the drip-line could be performed on it by adopting the superior detection technique and investigation method.

Abstract

The past few decades have seen major developments in the design and operation of cryogenic particle detectors. This technology offers an extremely good energy resolution - comparable to semiconductor detectors - and a wide choice of target materials, making low temperature calorimetric detectors ideal for a variety of particle physics applications. Rare event searches have continued to require ever greater exposures, which has driven them to ever larger cryogenic detectors, with the CUORE experiment being the first to reach a tonne-scale, mK-cooled, experimental mass. CUORE, designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay, has been operational since 2017 at a temperature of about 10 mK. This result has been attained by the use of an unprecedentedly large cryogenic infrastructure called the CUORE cryostat: conceived, designed and commissioned for this purpose. In this article the main characteristics and features of the cryogenic facility developed for the CUORE experiment are highlighted. A brief introduction of the evolution of the field and of the past cryogenic facilities are given. The motivation behind the design and development of the CUORE cryogenic facility is detailed as are the steps taken toward realization, commissioning, and operation of the CUORE cryostat. The major challenges overcome by the collaboration and the solutions implemented throughout the building of the cryogenic facility will be discussed along with the potential improvements for future facilities. The success of CUORE has opened the door to a new generation of large-scale cryogenic facilities in numerous fields of science. Broader implications of the incredible feat achieved by the CUORE collaboration on the future cryogenic facilities in various fields ranging from neutrino and dark matter experiments to quantum computing will be examined., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

We report the first dark matter search results using the commissioning data from PandaX-4T. Using a time projection chamber with 3.7-tonne of liquid xenon target and an exposure of 0.63 tonne$\cdot$year, 1058 candidate events are identified within an approximate nuclear recoil energy window between 5 and 100 keV. No significant excess over background is observed. Our data set a stringent limit to the dark matter-nucleon spin-independent interactions, with a lowest excluded cross section (90% C.L.) of $3.8\times10^{-47} $cm$^2$ at a dark matter mass of 30 GeV/$c^2$., Comment: proof draft as PRL

Abstract

Self-interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) is a leading candidate proposed to solve discrepancies between predictions of the prevailing cold dark matter theory and observations of galaxies. Many SIDM models predict the existence of a light force carrier that mediate strong dark matter self-interactions. If the mediator couples to the standard model particles, it could produce characteristic signals in dark matter direct detection experiments. We report searches for SIDM models with a light mediator using the full dataset of the PandaX-II experiment, based on a total exposure of 132 tonne-days. No significant excess over background is found, and our likelihood analysis leads to a strong upper limit on the dark matter-nucleon coupling strength. We further combine the PandaX-II constraints and those from observations of the light element abundances in the early universe, and show that direct detection and cosmological probes can provide complementary constraints on dark matter models with a light mediator., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

With the development of laser technologies, nuclear reactions can happen in high-temperature plasma environments induced by lasers and have attracted a lot of attention from different physical disciplines. However, studies on nuclear reactions in plasma are still limited by detecting technologies. This is mainly due to the fact that extremely high electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) can also be induced when high-intensity lasers hit targets to induce plasma, and then cause dysfunction of many types of traditional detectors. Therefore, new particle detecting technologies are highly needed. In this paper, we report a recently developed gated fiber detector which can be used in harsh EMP environments. In this prototype detector, scintillating photons are coupled by fiber and then transferred to a gated photomultiplier tube which is located far away from the EMP source and shielded well. With those measures, the EMPs can be avoided, and this device has the capability to identify a single event of nuclear reaction products generated in laser-induced plasma from noise EMP backgrounds. This new type of detector can be widely used as a Time-of-Flight (TOF) detector in high-intensity laser nuclear physics experiments for detecting neutron, photons, and other charged particles., 9 pages; 6 figures

Abstract

We report constraints on light dark matter through its interactions with shell electrons in the PandaX-II liquid xenon detector with a total 46.9 tonne$\cdot$day exposure. To effectively search for these very low energy electron recoils, ionization-only signals are selected from the data. 1821 candidates are identified within ionization signal range between 50 to 75 photoelectrons, corresponding to a mean electronic recoil energy from 0.08 to 0.15 keV. The 90% C.L. exclusion limit on the scattering cross section between the dark matter and electron is calculated based on Poisson statistics. Under the assumption of point interaction, we provide the world's most stringent limit within the dark matter mass range from 15 to 30 $\rm MeV/c^2$, with the corresponding cross section from $2.5\times10^{-37}$ to $3.1\times10^{-38}$ cm$^2$., 6 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

We measured two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{130}$Te using an exposure of 300.7 kg$\cdot$yr accumulated with the CUORE detector. Using a Bayesian analysis to fit simulated spectra to experimental data, it was possible to disentangle all the major background sources and precisely measure the two-neutrino contribution. The half-life is in agreement with past measurements with a strongly reduced uncertainty: $T^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 7.71^{+0.08}_{-0.06}\mathrm{(stat.)}^{+0.12}_{-0.15}\mathrm{(syst.)}\times10^{20}$ yr. This measurement is the most precise determination of the $^{130}$Te 2$\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life to date.

Abstract

We report a systematic determination of the responses of PandaX-II, a dual phase xenon time projection chamber detector, to low energy recoils. The electron recoil (ER) and nuclear recoil (NR) responses are calibrated, respectively, with injected tritiated methane or $^{220}$Rn source, and with $^{241}$Am-Be neutron source, within an energy range from $1-25$ keV (ER) and $4-80$ keV (NR), under the two drift fields of 400 and 317 V/cm. An empirical model is used to fit the light yield and charge yield for both types of recoils. The best fit models can well describe the calibration data. The systematic uncertainties of the fitted models are obtained via statistical comparison against the data., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in the isotope $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$. In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$ to the first $0^{+}_2$ excited state of $\mathrm{^{130}Xe}$: the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ($2\nu\beta\beta$). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg$\times$yr TeO$_2$ exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90\% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $\mathrm{S^{0\nu}_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${0\nu\beta\beta}$ decay and $\mathrm{S^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${2\nu\beta\beta}$ decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $90\%$ C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{0\nu}_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ mode and $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{2\nu}_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $2\nu\beta\beta$ mode. These represent the most stringent limits on the DBD of $^{130}$Te to excited states and improve by a factor $\sim5$ the previous results on this process., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

β-delayed one-proton emissions of ^{22}Si, the lightest nucleus with an isospin projection T_{z}=-3, are studied with a silicon array surrounded by high-purity germanium detectors. Properties of β-decay branches and the reduced transition probabilities for the transitions to the low-lying states of ^{22}Al are determined. Compared to the mirror β decay of ^{22}O, the largest value of mirror asymmetry in low-lying states by far, with δ=209(96), is found in the transition to the first 1^{+} excited state. Shell-model calculation with isospin-nonconserving forces, including the T=1, J=2, 3 interaction related to the s_{1/2} orbit that introduces explicitly the isospin-symmetry breaking force and describes the loosely bound nature of the wave functions of the s_{1/2} orbit, can reproduce the observed data well and consistently explain the observation that a large δ value occurs for the first but not for the second 1^{+} excited state of ^{22}Al. Our results, while supporting the proton-halo structure in ^{22}Al, might provide another means to identify halo nuclei.

Abstract

Anisotropic flow can offer significant information of evolution dynamics in heavy-ion collisions. A systematic study of the directed flow $v_1$ and elliptic flow $v_2$ of hard photons and free nucleons is performed for $^{40}$Ca+$^{40}$Ca collisions in a framework of isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. The study firstly reveals that thermal photons emitted in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions have the behaviors of directed and elliptic flows. The interesting phenomena of incident energy dependence of $v_1$ and $v_2$ for thermal photons in central collisions also confirmed that it can be regarded as a good probe of evolution dynamics. Moreover, the multiplicities of hard photons and free nucleons and their correlation are also investigated. We find that direct photon emission is positively related to free nucleons emission, however, there exists an anti-correlation for thermal photons with free nucleons., 9 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The effect of source size and emission time on the proton–proton (p–p) momentum correlation function ($$C_\mathrm{pp}(q)$$) has been studied systematically. Assuming a spherical Gaussian source with space and time profile according to the function $$S(r,t)\sim \exp (-r^2/2r_{0}^{2}-t/\tau )$$ in the correlation function calculation code (CRAB), the results indicate that one $$C_\mathrm{pp}(q)$$ distribution corresponds to a unique combination of source size $$r_0$$ and emission time $$\tau $$. Considering the possible nuclear deformation from a spherical nucleus, an ellipsoidal Gaussian source characterized by the deformation parameter $$\epsilon =\Delta {R}/R$$ has been simulated. There is almost no difference of $$C_\mathrm{pp}(q)$$ between the results of spherically and ellipsoidally shaped sources with small deformation. These results indicate that a unique source size $$r_0$$ and emission time could be extracted from the p–p momentum correlation function, which is especially important for identifying the mechanism of two-proton emission from proton-rich nuclei. Furthermore, considering the possible existence of cluster structures within a nucleus, the double Gaussian source is assumed. The results show that the p–p momentum correlation function for a source with or without cluster structures has large systematical differences with the variance of $$r_{0}$$ and $$\tau $$. This may provide a possible method for experimentally observing the cluster structures in proton-rich nuclei.

Abstract

We report new results from the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in ^{130} Te with the CUORE detector. This search benefits from a fourfold increase in exposure, lower trigger thresholds, and analysis improvements relative to our previous results. We observe a background of (1.38±0.07)×10^{-2} counts/(keV kg yr)) in the 0νββ decay region of interest and, with a total exposure of 372.5 kg yr, we attain a median exclusion sensitivity of 1.7×10^{25} yr. We find no evidence for 0νββ decay and set a 90% credibility interval Bayesian lower limit of 3.2×10^{25} yr on the ^{130} Te half-life for this process. In the hypothesis that 0νββ decay is mediated by light Majorana neutrinos, this results in an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass of 75-350 meV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used.

Abstract

Direct photon produced from first proton-neutron ($p$-$n$) collision during the early stage of heavy ion reaction is a sensitive probe to reflect energy and momentum distribution of nucleons. In this work, we embedded the hard photon production channel in an extended quantum molecular dynamics (EQMD) model, and took the direct photon as a possible probe to improve namely the Fermi motion in the EQMD model. A possible scheme is offered to handle the dynamical wave packet width within incoherent bremsstrahlung process. Direct photons calculated by our modified EQMD were compared with data of $^{14}$N + $^{12}$C at beam energies $E/A$ = 20, 30 and 40 MeV, and it is found that the yield, inverse slope and angular distribution of direct photons could be reasonably reproduced. In addition, asymmetric reaction systems of $^{4}$He + C and $^{4}$He + Zn at $E/A$ = 53 MeV are also simulated in this work. It is found that the symmetric angular distribution in the nucleon-nucleon ($N$-$N$) center-of-mass (c.m.) frame and the velocity of $ the \gamma$-emission source can be reasonably obtained from our method although there is some quantitative differences., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We report the dark matter search results obtained using the full 132 ton$\cdot$day exposure of the PandaX-II experiment, including all data from March 2016 to August 2018. No significant excess of events is identified above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions. Abstract

The detector consists of a segmented array of 988 natural TeO2 cubic crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. The detector construction was completed in August 2016 and data taking started in Spring 2017. In this work, we present a brief description of the bolometric technique for rare events search and the CUORE detector, then we concentrate on the data analysis results. In this respect, we focus on the procedure for data processing and on the first 0νββ results we obtained from a total TeO2 exposure of 86.3kg yr. Next, we illustrate the main background sources and the CUORE background model, from which we obtain the most precise measurement of 130Te 2νββ half-life to date. Finally, we discuss the improvements achieved with 2018 and 2019 detector optimization campaigns and the current perspectives of our experiment.

Abstract

In dark matter direct detection experiments, neutron is a serious source of background, which can mimic the dark matter-nucleus scattering signals. In this paper, we present an improved evaluation of the neutron background in the PandaX-II dark matter experiment by a novel approach. Instead of fully relying on the Monte Carlo simulation, the overall neutron background is determined from the neutron-induced high energy signals in the data. In addition, the probability of producing a dark-matter-like background per neutron is evaluated with a complete Monte Carlo generator, where the correlated emission of neutron(s) and γ(s) in the (α, n) reactions and spontaneous fissions is taken into consideration. With this method, the neutron backgrounds in the Run 9 (26-ton-day) and Run 10 (28-ton-day) data sets of PandaX-II are estimated to be (0.66±0.24) and (0.47±0.25) events, respectively.

Abstract

Based on the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model, finite-size scaling effects on nuclear liquid--gas phase transition probes are investigated by studying the de-excitation processes of six thermal sources of different sizes with the same initial density and similar $N/Z$. Using several probes including the total multiplicity derivative ($dM_{tot}/dT$), second moment parameter ($M_2$), intermediate mass fragment (IMF) multiplicity ($N_{IMF}$), Fisher's power-law exponent ($\tau$), and Ma's nuclear Zipf's law exponent ($\xi$), the relationship between the phase transition temperature and the source size has been established. It is observed that the phase transition temperatures obtained from the IMF multiplicity, Fisher's exponent, and Ma's nuclear Zipf's law exponent have a strong correlation with the source size. Moreover, by employing the finite-size scaling law, the critical temperature $T_c$ and the critical exponent $\nu$ have been obtained for infinite nuclear matter., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We report the Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) search results from PandaX-II dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber. The total live time used in this analysis is 403.1 days from June 2016 to August 2018. With NLDBD-optimized event selection criteria, we obtain a fiducial mass of 219 kg of natural xenon. The accumulated xenon exposure is 242 kg$\cdot$yr, or equivalently 22.2 kg$\cdot$yr of $^{136}$Xe exposure. At the region around $^{136}$Xe decay Q-value of 2458 keV, the energy resolution of PandaX-II is 4.2%. We find no evidence of NLDBD in PandaX-II and establish a lower limit for decay half-life of 2.4 $ \times 10^{23} $ yr at the 90% confidence level, which corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass $m_{\beta \beta} < (1.3 - 3.5)$ eV. Abstract

Charged particle diagnosis is an important aspect of laser–plasma experiments conducted at super-intense laser facilities. In recent years, Columbia Resin #39 (CR-39) detectors have been widely employed for detecting charged particles in laser–plasma experiments. This is because the CR-39 polymer does not respond to electromagnetic pulses or X-rays. This study presents a method for calibrating the relationship between particle energy and track diameter in a CR-39 detector (TasTrak®) using 3–8 MeV protons, 6–30 MeV carbon ions, and 1–5 MeV alpha particles. The particle tracks were compared under the manufacturer’s recommended etching conditions of 6.25 mol/l NaOH at 98 °C and under the widely adopted experimental conditions of 6.25 mol/l NaOH at 70 °C. The results show that if the NaOH solution concentration is 6.25 mol/l, then the temperature of 70 °C is more suitable for etching proton tracks than 98 °C and employing a temperature of 98 °C to etch alpha-particle and carbon-ion tracks can significantly reduce the etching time. Moreover, this result implies that C3+ ion or alpha-particle tracks can be distinguished from proton tracks with energy above 3 MeV by controlling the etching time. This calibration method for the CR-39 detector can be applied to the diagnosis of reaction products in laser–plasma experiments.

Abstract

We report a search for new physics signals using the low energy electron recoil events in the complete data set from PandaX-II, in light of the recent event excess reported by XENON1T. The data correspond to a total exposure of 100.7 ton⋅day with liquid xenon. With robust estimates of the dominant background spectra, we perform sensitive searches on solar axions and neutrinos with enhanced magnetic moment. It is found that the axion-electron coupling g Ae < 4.6 × 10–12 for an axion mass less than 0.1 keV/c 2 and the neutrino magnetic moment μν < 4.9 × 10–11 μ B at 90 % confidence level. The observed excess from XENON1T is within our experimental constraints.

Abstract

The neutron yield in $^{12}$C(d,n)$^{13}$N and the proton yield in $^{12}C(d,p)^{13}$C have been measured by deuteron beam from 0.6 MeV to 3 MeV which is delivered from a 4-MeV electro static accelerator bombarding on the thick carbon target. The neutrons are detected at $0\degree$, $24\degree$, $48\degree$ and the protons at $135\degree$ in the lab frame. The ratios of the neutron yield to the proton one have been calculated and can be used as an effective probe to pin down the resonances. The resonances are found at 1.4 MeV, 1.7 MeV, 2.5 MeV in $^{12}C(d,p)^{13}$C and at 1.6 MeV, 2.7 MeV in $^{12}$C(d,n)$^{13}$N. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO 2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr , characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts / ( keV kg yr ) . In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te &gt, 1.3 &middot, 10 25 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2 &nu, &beta, decay with a resulting half-life of T 1 / 2 2 &nu, = [ 7.9 &plusmn, 0.1 ( stat . ) &plusmn, 0.2 ( syst . ) ] &times, 10 20 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results.

Abstract

The PandaX-4T experiment, a four-ton scale dark matter direct detection experiment, is being planned at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. In this paper we present a simulation study of the expected background in this experiment. In a 2.8-ton fiducial mass and the signal region between 1 to 10 keV electron equivalent energy, the total electron recoil background is found to be 4.9x10^{-5} /(kg day keV). The nuclear recoil background in the same region is 2.8x10^{-7}/(kg day keV). With an exposure of 5.6 ton-years, the sensitivity of PandaX-4T could reach a minimum spin-independent dark matter-nucleon cross section of 6x10^{-48} cm^{2} at a dark matter mass of 40 GeV/c^{2}., 11 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The $\beta$ -delayed particle emission from 21Mg was studied at the Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou (RIBLL1). Silicon array and high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors were used to detect the charged particles and $\gamma$ -rays emitted from the decay. Half-life time of 21Mg was determined to be 121.9(6) ms. New levels (5.639(26) MeV and 6.644(34) MeV) in the nucleus 21Na were observed. An improved proton spectrum coincident with $\gamma$ -rays at 1.633 MeV was obtained. A new partial decay scheme was constructed based on the present measurement.

Abstract

In this paper, the implantation-decay method is introduced to study the $$\beta $$ -delayed charged particle decay. A silicon detector array was used for the implantation of the incident beams and for the detection of the emitted particles. An experimental measurement on the $$\beta $$ -delayed particle emission from $$^{22}$$ Al was used to demonstrate the method. The half-life value, charged particle spectroscopy, $$\gamma $$ ray spectrum, and $$\gamma $$ particle coincidence for the decay process were obtained and compared with previous experimental results for $$^{22}$$ Al. The results show that the implantation-decay method, using a silicon detector array, is a suitable experimental method to study the $$\beta $$ -delayed charged particle decay for proton-rich nuclei.

Abstract

The deexcitation of single excited $$^{112}$$ Sn nuclei at T = 1–30 MeV is simulated using the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model and GEMINI model. The fragmentation mechanism, critical behavior, and kinematic characteristics are investigated within these two models. The results show that the IQMD model can be applied to the analysis of fragmentation processes, critical points, and slope temperature extraction. The results of IQMD are generally consistent with experimental $$\langle M_{\text {IMF}}\rangle - Z_{\text {bound}}$$ data. However, GEMINI can reproduce the experimental data better than IQMD for isotopic distributions.

Abstract

A new detection system with high detection efficiency and low detection threshold has been developed for charged-particle decay studies, including beta-delayed proton, alpha decay or direct proton emission from proton-rich nuclei. The performance was evaluated by using the beta-delayed proton emitter Si-24 produced by projectile fragmentation at the First Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou. Under a continuous-beam mode, the isotopes of interest were implanted into two double-sided silicon strip detectors, where the subsequent decays were measured and correlated to the preceding implantations by using position and time information. The system allows us to measure protons with energies down to about 200 keV without obvious 13 background in the proton spectrum. Further application of the detection system can be extended to the measurements of beta-delayed proton decay and the direct proton emission of more exotic proton-rich nuclei. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

A prototype thick-GEM-based cooling storage ring external-target experiment (CEE) time projection chamber (TPC) is constructed and tested with the pulsed ultraviolet laser beams. The results indicate that the prototype TPC has a good performance in three-dimensional track resolution. In X direction the position resolution is about 0.2 mm, and in Y direction the position resolution is about 0.5 mm. The results also determine that the energy resolution is about 5.4%, which achieve the requirements of the CEE experiment and can be used to study the nuclear state equation and the quantum chromo dynamics.

Abstract

We search for nuclear recoil signals of dark matter models with a light mediator in PandaX-II, a direct detection experiment in China Jinping underground Laboratory. Using data collected in 2016 and 2017 runs, corresponding to a total exposure of 54 ton day, we set upper limits on the zero-momentum dark matter-nucleon cross section. These limits have a strong dependence on the mediator mass when it is comparable to or below the typical momentum transfer. We apply our results to constrain self-interacting dark matter models with a light mediator mixing with standard model particles, and set strong limits on the model parameter space for the dark matter mass ranging from $5~{\rm GeV}$ to $10~{\rm TeV}$., Version accepted by PRL, new figures (Fig.2 ) added

Abstract

The measurement of high-energy $$\gamma $$ -rays is an important experimental method to study the giant resonance in a nucleus, $$\gamma $$ reaction in nuclear astrophysics, and so on. The performance of a large-size CsI detector for $$\gamma $$ -rays detection is studied by comparison between the experimental measurements and GEANT4 simulation. The reliability of the simulated efficiency for low-energy $$\gamma $$ -rays is verified by comparing with the experimental data. The efficiency of the CsI detector for high-energy $$\gamma $$ -rays was obtained by the GEANT4 simulation. The simulation shows that the detection efficiency of 20 MeV $$\gamma $$ -rays can reach 3.8%.

Abstract

International audience; CUORE is the first bolometric tonne-scale experiment aiming at the investigation of neutrinoless double-beta (0$\nu$2$\beta$) decay of $^{130}$Te. The cryogenic commissioning followed by the detector installation and cool down took place during 2016. After the optimisation of all the detectors, the data-taking started in spring 2017. We report about the results of the first dataset acquired in May, which led to a limit on the 0$\nu$2$\beta$ half-life of $^{130}$Te of 6.6$\times$10$^{24}$ yr. An upgrade of CUORE, named CUPID, is planned to improve the 0$\nu$2$\beta$-decay sensitivity via passive and active background reduction and crystal enrichment. Some technologies for CUPID are currently under study and two of them are presented here, involving the detection of Cherenkov and scintillation light emitted by enriched $^{130}$TeO$_2$ and Li$^{100}_2$MoO$_4$ crystals respectively. This will allow us to reject the currently dominant a background.

Abstract

We report a new search of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) using the combined low background data sets in 2016 and 2017 from the PandaX-II experiment in China. The latest data set contains a new exposure of 77.1 live day, with the background reduced to a level of 0.8$\times10^{-3}$ evt/kg/day, improved by a factor of 2.5 in comparison to the previous run in 2016. No excess events were found above the expected background. Abstract

We report new searches for the solar axions and galactic axion-like dark matter particles, using the first low-background data from PandaX-II experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory, corresponding to a total exposure of about $2.7\times 10^4$ kg$\cdot$day. No solar axion or galactic axion-like dark matter particle candidate has been identified. The upper limit on the axion-electron coupling ($g_{Ae}$) from the solar flux is found to be about $4.35 \times 10^{-12}$ in mass range from $10^{-5}$ to 1 keV/$c^2$ with 90\% confidence level, similar to the recent LUX result. We also report a new best limit from the $^{57}$Fe de-excitation. On the other hand, the upper limit from the galactic axions is on the order of $10^{-13}$ in the mass range from 1 keV/$c^2$ to 10 keV/$c^2$ with 90\% confidence level, slightly improved compared with the LUX., 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

PandaX is a large liquid-xenon detector experiment usable for direct dark-matter detection and 136Xe double-beta decay search. The central vessel was designed to accommodate a staged target volume increase from initially 120 kg (stage I) to 0.5 t (stage II) and eventually to a multi-ton scale. The experiment is located in the Jinping Deep-Underground Laboratory in Sichuan, China. The detector operates in dual-phase mode, allowing detection of both prompt scintillation, and ionization charge through proportional scintillation. In this paper a detailed description of the stage I detector design and performance as well as results established during the commissioning phase are presented.

Abstract

We report the weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter search results using the first physics-run data of the PandaX-II 500 kg liquid xenon dual-phase time-projection chamber, operating at the China JinPing underground laboratory. No dark matter candidate is identified above background. In combination with the data set during the commissioning run, with a total exposure of 3.3×10^{4} kg day, the most stringent limit to the spin-independent interaction between the ordinary and WIMP dark matter is set for a range of dark matter mass between 5 and 1000 GeV/c^{2}. The best upper limit on the scattering cross section is found 2.5×10^{-46} cm^{2} for the WIMP mass 40 GeV/c^{2} at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Interaction cross sections (sigma(1)) for Me isotopes from the stability line to the vicinity of the neutron drip line have been measured at around 240 MeV/nucleon using BigRIPS at RIBF, RIKEN, The sigma(1) for Ne27-32 in every case exceed the systematic mass-number dependence of sigma(1) for stable nuclei, which can be explained by considering the nuclear deformation. In particular the sigma(1) for Ne-29 and Ne-31 are significantly greater than those of their neighboring nuclides. These enhancements of sigma(1) for Ne-29 and Ne-31 cannot be explained by a single-particle model calculation under the assumption that the valence neutron of Ne-29 (Ne-31) occupies the 0d(3/2) (0f(7/2)) orbital, as expected from the standard spherical shell ordering. The present data suggest an s dominant halo structure of Ne-29 and s- or p-orbital halo in Ne-31. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

This paper summarizes the isoscaling and isospin related studies in asymmetry nuclear reactions by different dynamic and statistical models. Isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics model (IQMD) and lattice gas model (LGM) are used to study the isoscaling properties and isoscaling parameters dependence on incident energies, impact parameters, temperature and other parameters. In the LGM model, the signal of phase transition has been found in free neutron (proton) chemical potential difference Delta mu(n) or Delta mu(p) as a function of temperature, or in free neutron and proton chemical potential difference Delta mu(n)-Delta mu(p). Density dependence of symmetry energy coefficient C-sym(rho/rho(0)) is also studied in the frame of LGM, with the potential parameters which can reproduce the nuclear ground state property, soft density dependence of symmetry energy is deduced from the simulation results. Giant dipole resonance (GDR) induced by isospin asymmetry in entrance channel is also studied via IQMD model, and the dynamic dipole resonance shows isospin sensitivity on the isospin asymmetry of entrance channel and symmetry energy of the nuclear equation of state (EOS). GDR can also be regarded as a possible isospin sensitive signature.

Abstract

The use of recyclable forms of sulfur will exclude the risk of sediment reacidification and reduce the cost of bioleaching process. Three different forms of sulfur (namely sulfur powder, prills and pieces) were used to examine the utilization and recycle of sulfur, used as energy substrate for sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) in the bioleaching of heavy metal-contaminated sediments. The results showed that despite their relatively smaller surface areas, the efficiency of metal bioleaching with sulfur prills and pieces were comparable to that with sulfur powder. After 13 days of bioleaching, 71-74% of Zn, 58-62% of Cu, and 22-31% of Cr could be leached from the sediments, respectively. During bioleaching, most of the oxidizable and reducible forms of metals were transformed to acid soluble, posing a favorable condition for final metals removal. Sulfur recycling experiments showed that the recovered sulfur prills and pieces were as the same effective in pH reduction as fresh sulfur, revealing the feasibility of eventual reuse of the recycled sulfur in the bioleaching process. Further studies are required to testify the performance of these recyclable forms of sulfur in future large-scale bioleaching reactor.

Abstract

We report the results of a weakly-interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter search using the full 80.1\;live-day exposure of the first stage of the PandaX experiment (PandaX-I) located in the China Jin-Ping Underground Laboratory. The PandaX-I detector has been optimized for detecting low-mass WIMPs, achieving a photon detection efficiency of 9.6\%. With a fiducial liquid xenon target mass of 54.0\,kg, no significant excess event were found above the expected background. A profile likelihood analysis confirms our earlier finding that the PandaX-I data disfavor all positive low-mass WIMP signals reported in the literature under standard assumptions. A stringent bound on the low mass WIMP is set at WIMP mass below 10\,GeV/c$^2$, demonstrating that liquid xenon detectors can be competitive for low-mass WIMP searches., Comment: v3 as accepted by PRD. The shear viscosity (η) and entropy density (s) are studied for the central Au+Au collisions with the help of a microscopic transport model, namely the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamic model (IQMD). Employ the formula given in Ref.[1], η is calculated as a time dependent variable for different incident energies from 40 MeV/u to 120 MeV/u and the energy dependence of η/s of nuclear matter in the most compressed stage in collision process is displayed.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in $^{130}$Te and other rare processes. CUORE is a cryogenic detector composed of 988 TeO$_2$ bolometers for a total mass of about 741 kg. The detector is being constructed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, where it will start taking data in 2015. If the target background of 0.01 counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$y) will be reached, in five years of data taking CUORE will have an half life sensitivity around $1\times 10^{26}$ y at 90\% C.L. As a first step towards CUORE a smaller experiment CUORE-0, constructed to test and demonstrate the performances expected for CUORE, has been assembled and is running. The detector is a single tower of 52 CUORE-like bolometers that started taking data in spring 2013. Abstract

Measurements of reaction cross section (sigma(R)) for some proton-rich nuclei (N = 8, 10, 12 isotones) on carbon target at intermediate energies have been performed on RIBLL of HIRFL by a transmission method. The experimental sigma(R) values for Al-23 and P-27 are abnormally large compared with its neighboring nuclei and that of F-17 has an enhancement compared with neighboring isotopes. The calculation of relativistic density-dependent Hartree (RDDH) approach shows there is proton-halo structure in Al-23 and P-27 and there is a proton-skin in F-17. The significance of these measurements was discussed.
