Illness is a significant global societal issue in the 21st century. Forest, as an important part of terrestrial ecosystem, holds substantial health and well-being benefits. People can gain health benefits from interacting with forests, even for short periods. Unfortunately, there is a lack of systematic concern regarding the beneficial elements that forest provides to humans. In this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following established guidelines, comprehensively evaluating the beneficial elements of the forest environment. The results indicated that the beneficial forest elements relevant to human health include beneficial substances (clean air, high-quality freshwater, CO2/O2 balance, negative air ions, and phytoncides) and beneficial factors (moderate thermal environment and biodiversity). These beneficial forest elements are products of plant’s physiological processes. While their production pathways are relatively well understood, the mechanisms by which these elements impact health are unclear. This review provided the foundational data and theoretical insights for future research on the health benefits of forest elements.

Enunciating the carbon storage across various types of forests is a precondition for comprehending forest ecosystem carbon cycling. However, previous studies regarding forest carbon storage were primarily conducted in the general temperature zones, with a limited understanding of carbon storage in different forest types within climate transition zones. In this study, we employed biomass models to explore the carbon storage in three types of natural secondary forests (Pinus armandii forest, Quercus aliena forest, and Q. aliena–P. armandii mixed forest) in the transition zone between the northern subtropical and warm temperate regions of China. Furthermore, we used the variance decomposition analysis and random forest model to determine the key factors influencing carbon storage in three types of natural secondary forests. Our results indicated that the carbon storage of wood and soil layers in the Q. aliena–P. armandii mixed forest was significantly higher than that in the P. armandii and Q. aliena forests. Total carbon storage was ranked as follows: Q. aliena–P. armandii mixed forest (266.09 t/ha) > P. armandii forest (222.89 t/ha) > Q. aliena forest (212.46 t/ha). Our results also revealed that carbon storage of the wood layer was jointly regulated by environmental factors, plant physiological characteristics, and soil properties, while soil carbon storage was mainly affected by soil properties. These results highlight the significant advantages of mixed conifer–broadleaf forests in carbon storage, emphasizing the importance of mixed natural secondary forests in carbon cycling and ecosystem services. This study provides scientific evidence for enhancing forest carbon sink functions and developing forest conservation and management policies to combat climate change.

Elucidating the water utilization strategy of trees during forest succession is a prerequisite for predicting the direction of forest succession. However, the water utilization characteristics of trees in forests across a successional gradient remain unclear. Here, we utilized the hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes combined with the Bayesian mixed model (MixSIAR) to analyze the water utilization of dominant trees (Pinus massoniana, Castanea henryi, and Schima superba) in forests along a successional gradient in the Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve of China. Furthermore, we determined the primary factor affecting the water utilization of various trees based on variation partitioning analysis and a random forest model. Our results illustrated that in the early-successional forest, the water utilization ratios from shallow soil layers by P. massoniana were significantly lower than that in the mid-successional forest (51.3%–61.7% vs. 75.3%–81.4%), while its water utilization ratios from deep soil layers exhibited the opposite pattern (26.1%–30.1% vs. 9.0%–15.0%). Similarly, the ratios of water utilization from shallow soil layers by C. henryi (18.9%–29.5% vs. 32.4%–45.9%) and S. superba (10.0%–25.7% vs. 29.2%–66.4%) in the mid-successional forest were relatively lower than in the late-successional forest, whereas their water utilization ratios from deep soil layers showed the contrary tendency. Moreover, our results demonstrated that the diverse water utilization of each tree in different successional forests was mainly attributed to their distinct plant properties. Our findings highlight the increased percentage of water utilization of trees from shallow soil layers with forest succession, providing new insights for predicting the direction of forest succession under changing environments.

Seasonal drought events induced by climate change have exacerbated the water deficit in trees. This is particularly pronounced in mature trees with considerable heights and extensive branches, where the long water transport distance leads to a reduction in hydraulic transportation efficiency. Therefore, investigating the water uptake patterns of mature trees is essential to enhance their growth and resilience to climate change. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on trees aged 10–60 years, with limited research on the water uptake patterns of trees over 60 years old. In this study, we employed hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes coupled with the MixSIAR model to determine the water uptake patterns of mature Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata (40–60 years, 60–90 years, 120–150 years, >150 years) during the growing seasons of 2021 and 2022 in Baotianman Nature Reserve, Henan Province, China. Additionally, we utilized a random forest model to quantify the relative contributions of vegetation (fine root biomass) and soil properties (soil moisture, bulk density, total porosity, field capacity, and soil texture) to the water uptake patterns of Q. aliena. Our findings demonstrate that most mature Q. aliena predominantly extracted deep soil water (60–100 cm) in the early growing season, but shifted towards utilizing shallow soil water (0–40 cm) in the late growing season. The water uptake pattern of mature Q. aliena was primarily regulated by soil moisture. These results reveal that mature Q. aliena trees exhibit a flexible water use strategy, enabling them to cope with seasonal drought by altering the soil depth from which they extract water. In the future, in the process of the cultivation and conservation of mature oak trees, surface soil irrigation can be increased to prevent tree mortality resulting from water deficit during drought conditions.

BackgroundFunctional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies examining differences in the activity of brain networks between the first depressive episode (FDE) and recurrent depressive episode (RDE) are limited. The current study observed and compared the altered functional connectivity (FC) characteristics in the default mode network (DMN), cognitive control network (CCN), and affective network (AN) between the RDE and FDE. In addition, we further investigated the correlation between abnormal FC and clinical symptoms.MethodsWe recruited 32 patients with the RDE, 31 patients with the FDE, and 30 healthy controls (HCs). All subjects underwent resting-state fMRI. The seed-based FC method was used to analyze the abnormal brain networks in the DMN, CCN, and AN among the three groups and further explore the correlation between abnormal FC and clinical symptoms.ResultsOne-way analysis of variance showed significant differences the FC in the DMN, CCN, and AN among the three groups in the frontal, parietal, temporal, and precuneus lobes and cerebellum. Compared with the RDE group, the FDE group generally showed reduced FC in the DMN, CCN, and AN. Compared with the HC group, the FDE group showed reduced FC in the DMN, CCN, and AN, while the RDE group showed reduced FC only in the DMN and AN. Moreover, the FC in the left posterior cingulate cortices and the right inferior temporal gyrus in the RDE group were positively correlated with the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17), and the FC in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortices and the right precuneus in the FDE group were negatively correlated with the HAMD-17.ConclusionsThe RDE and FDE groups showed multiple abnormal brain networks. However, the alterations of abnormal FC were more extensive and intensive in the FDE group.

ObjectiveTranscutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is effective for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). In the current study, we observed the immediate modulating brain effect of taVNS in patients with TRD using rest-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI).MethodForty patients with TRD and forty healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Rs-fMRI was performed before and after 30 min of taVNS at baseline. The brain regions that presented significantly different the Regional Homogeneity (ReHo) between the TRD patients and HCs were selected as the ROI to calculate the functional connectivity (FC) of full brain. Plantation cultivation plays an important role in improving terrestrial ecosystem functions and services. Understanding the water-use patterns of major afforestation species is vital for formulating ecological restoration strategies and predicting the response of plantation to climate change. However, the impacts and drivers of forest types on water-use patterns of key tree species are poorly understood. Here, the combined methods of dual stable isotope of δD and δ18O and Bayesian mixed framework (MixSIAR) were employed to investigate the water-use patterns of Cunninghamia lanceolata (Chinese fir) in a monoculture, mixed forest with Cinnamomum camphora, and mixed forest with Alnus cremastogyne under different rainfall events in subtropical China. Furthermore, the relative contribution of different soil and plant factors to the water-use patterns of Chinese fir was quantified using a random forest model. Our results showed that Chinese fir in the mixed forests (with C. camphora or with A. cremastogyne) utilized less water from shallow soil compared to that in a monoculture but significantly improved the proportion of water absorbed from deep soil with the increase of 55.57%–64.90% and 68.99%–108.83% following moderate and heavy rainfall events, respectively. The most important factors contributing to the differences in water-use patterns of Chinese fir among monoculture and mixed forests were tree attributes (i.e., leaf biomass, eco-physiological regulation, and fine root biomass). These findings reveal that Chinese fir in mixed forests could optimize water-use patterns by adjusting plant properties for interspecific niche complementarity, improving the utilization of deep soil water. Overall, this study suggests that mixed-species plantations could improve water-use efficiency and reduce the sensitivity of tree species to precipitation change, indicating they are better able to cope with expected climate variability.

BackgroundTreatment-resistant depression (TRD) may have different physiopathological neuromechanism in different age groups. This study used the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) to initially compare abnormalities in local functional brain activity in younger and older patients with TRD.Materials and methodsA total of 21 older TRD patients, 19 younger TRD, 19 older healthy controls (HCs), and 19 younger HCs underwent resting-state functional MRI scans, and the images were analyzed using the ALFF and further analyzed for correlation between abnormal brain regions and clinical symptoms in TRD patients of different age groups.ResultsCompared with the older TRD, the younger TRD group had increased ALFF in the left middle frontal gyrus and decreased ALFF in the left caudate nucleus. Compared with the matched HC group, ALFF was increased in the right middle temporal gyrus and left pallidum in the older TRD group, whereas no significant differences were found in the younger TRD group. In addition, ALFF values in the left middle frontal gyrus in the younger TRD group and in the right middle temporal gyrus in the older TRD were both positively correlated with the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression score.ConclusionDifferent neuropathological mechanisms may exist in TRD patients of different ages, especially in the left middle frontal gyrus and left caudate nucleus. This study is beneficial in providing potential key targets for the clinical management of TRD patients of different ages.

Abstract Forest management practices play an important role in regulating the soil water-holding capacity of plantation. However, most studies focus on soil water dynamics present during large-scale forest loss and afforestation events, while little is known about how soil water under different forest management practices responds to rainfall events and which factors mainly regulate soil water-holding capacity. In this study, a stable hydrogen isotope was used to explore the contribution of three natural rainfall events (8.9, 13.3 and 67.7 mm) to soil water (CRSW) in a Pinus massoniana plantation under four forest management practices (no thinning (NTN), understory removal (USR), light-intensity thinning (LIT) and heavy-intensity thinning (HIT)) in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of the Yangtze River Basin in China. Furthermore, a structural equation model was employed to determine the effects of vegetation biomass and soil properties on the CRSW. The results showed that plantation soil under different forest management practices exhibited different water-holding capacities. Following light (8.9 mm) and moderate (13.3 mm) rainfall events, the CRSW in the HIT stand was slightly higher than that in the other stands. Following heavy (66.7 mm) rainfall event, the CRSW of most layers in USR stand was not different from the other three stands, while the CRSW in the LIT and NTN stands was significantly higher than that in the HIT stand in the 0–100 cm soil layers, suggesting that soil in the LIT and NTN stands had a greater water-holding capacity than that in the HIT stand. In addition, soil properties were the main factors directly affecting the CRSW, explaining 60% and 37% of the variation in the CRSW on the first and seventh days after heavy rainfall, respectively. Overall, compared to the HIT stand, the LIT and NTN stands showed greater capacity in retaining rainwater. Therefore, under expected global changes with frequent occurrences of extreme precipitation events, methods involving light-intensity and no thinning should be employed to build up soil and water conservation functions, which will be critical for keeping water-holding capacity and moderating floods.

ObjectiveIn this study, we used amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) to observe differences in local brain functional activity and its characteristics in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and non-treatment-resistant depression (nTRD), and to explore the correlation between areas of abnormal brain functional activity and clinical symptoms.MethodThirty-seven patients with TRD, 36 patients with nTRD, and 35 healthy controls (HCs) were included in resting-state fMRI scans. ALFF and ReHo were used for image analysis and further correlation between abnormal brain regions and clinical symptoms were analyzed.ResultsANOVA revealed that the significantly different brain regions of ALFF and ReHo among the three groups were mainly concentrated in the frontal and temporal lobes. Compared with the nTRD group, the TRD group had decreased ALFF in the left/right inferior frontal triangular gyrus, left middle temporal gyrus, left cuneus and bilateral posterior lobes of the cerebellum, and increased ALFF in the left middle frontal gyrus and right superior temporal gyrus, and the TRD group had decreased ReHo in the left/right inferior frontal triangular gyrus, left middle temporal gyrus, and increased ReHo in the right superior frontal gyrus. Compared with the HC group, the TRD group had decreased ALFF/ReHo in both the right inferior frontal triangular gyrus and the left middle temporal gyrus. Pearson correlation analysis showed that both ALFF and ReHo values in these abnormal brain regions were positively correlated with HAMD-17 scores (P < 0.05).ConclusionAlthough the clinical symptoms were similar in the TRD and nTRD groups, abnormal neurological functional activity were present in some of the same brain regions. Compared with the nTRD group, ALFF and ReHo showed a wider range of brain area alterations and more complex neuropathological mechanisms in the TRD group, especially in the inferior frontal triangular gyrus of the frontal lobe and the middle temporal gyrus of the temporal lobe.

BackgroundPrevious studies found that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) was clinically effective in treating a case of treatment-resistant depression (TRD). However, the brain neural mechanisms underlying the immediate effects of taVNS treatment for TRD have not been elucidated.Materials and MethodsDifferences in the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) between TRD and healthy control (HC) groups were observed. The TRD group was treated with taVNS for 30 min, and changes in ALFF in the TRD group before and after immediate treatment were observed. The ALFF brain regions altered by taVNS induction were used as regions of interest to analyze whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) changes in the TRD group.ResultsA total of 44 TRD patients and 44 HCs completed the study and were included in the data analysis. Compared with the HC group, the TRD group had increased ALFF in the left orbital area of the middle frontal gyrus. After taVNS treatment, ALFF in the left orbital area of the middle frontal gyrus and right middle frontal gyrus decreased in the TRD group, while ALFF in the right orbital area of the superior frontal gyrus increased. The FC in the left orbital area of the middle frontal gyrus with left middle frontal gyrus and the right inferior occipital gyrus was significantly increased.ConclusionTranscutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation demonstrates immediate modulation of functional activity in the emotional network, cognitive control network, and visual processing cortex, and may be a potential brain imaging biomarker for the treatment of TRD.

BackgroundStudies on differences in brain function activity between the first depressive episode (FDE) and recurrent depressive episodes (RDE) are scarce. In this study, we used regional homogeneity (ReHo) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) as indices of abnormal brain function activity. We aimed to determine the differences in these indices between patients with FDE and those with RDE, and to investigate the correlation between areas of abnormal brain function and clinical symptoms.MethodsA total of 29 patients with RDE, 28 patients with FDE, and 29 healthy controls (HCs) who underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were included in this study. The ReHo and ALFF measurements were used for image analysis and further analysis of the correlation between different brain regions and clinical symptoms.ResultsAnalysis of variance showed significant differences among the three groups in ReHo and ALFF in the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. ReHo was higher in the right inferior frontal triangular gyrus and lower in the left inferior temporal gyrus in the RDE group than in the FDE group. Meanwhile, ALFF was higher in the right inferior frontal triangular gyrus, left anterior cingulate gyrus, orbital part of the left middle frontal gyrus, orbital part of the left superior frontal gyrus, and right angular gyrus, but was lower in the right lingual gyrus in the RDE group than in the FDE group. ReHo and ALFF were lower in the left angular gyrus in the RDE and FDE groups than in the HC group. Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between the ReHo and ALFF values in these abnormal areas in the frontal lobe and the severity of depressive symptoms (P < 0.05). Abnormal areas in the temporal and occipital lobes were negatively correlated with the severity of depressive symptoms (P < 0.05).ConclusionThe RDE and FDE groups had abnormal neural function activity in some of the same brain regions. ReHo and ALFF were more widely distributed in different brain regions and had more complex neuropathological mechanisms in the RDE group than in the FDE group, especially in the right inferior frontal triangular gyrus of the frontal lobe.

The precipitation changes induced by climate warming have substantially increased extreme precipitation and seasonal drought events. Different plant functional types (PFTs) could exert an important role in resisting extreme climate. However, the patterns of plant water uptake in different PFTs remain uncertain, especially under different magnitudes of rainfall events. Here, we employed a stable hydrogen isotope (δD) to determine the water sources of different PFTs, including Castanopsis chinensis in the canopy layer, Schima superba in the canopy sublayer, Psychotria asiatica in the shrub layer, and Blechnum orientale on the forest floor in the monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest in Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve, China. We further used a two-end linear mixing model to explore the water utilization among different PFTs. Our results revealed that precipitation and soil water before rainfall were the water sources of different PFTs. Furthermore, the proportions of precipitation utilized by S. superba in the canopy sublayer under light and moderate rainfalls were 6.9%–59.4% and 30.5%–66.3%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of other species in both the dry and wet seasons. After heavy rainfall, the proportion of precipitation utilized by S. superba was the lowest (4.7%–26.5%), while B. orientale had the highest proportion of precipitation utilization (31.6%–91.5%), whether in the dry or wet season. These findings imply that different PFTs would compete with one another for water uptake. Especially under climate warming, the uneven distribution of precipitation would intensify the water competition among species, ultimately resulting in the plant community structure becoming much more unstable than before.

The climate-induced changes in soil water patterns pose a serious threat to subtropical plantations. Mixed species stands have been advocated as an efficient way to enhance ecosystem stability. However, little is known about their possible impact on the soil water-holding capacity in the subtropics. In this study, we employed a stable hydrogen isotope to assess the contribution of rainfall to soil water (CRSW) in a pure Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantation and in two mixtures of Chinese fir with Cinnamomum camphora or with Alnus cremastogyne after three different magnitudes of rainfall events in subtropical China. Furthermore, we used structure equation modeling (SEM) to quantify the relative importance of vegetation and soil properties on the CRSW. The results indicated that the CRSW did not differ among these three Chinese fir plantations after light rainfall, whereas the CRSW of moderate and heavy rainfall to soil water were 15.95% and 26.06% higher in Chinese fir plantation with Cinnamomum camphora, and 22.67% and 22.93% higher in Chinese fir plantation with Alnus cremastogyne than that in the pure Chinese fir plantation, respectively. SEM analysis showed that the vegetation biomass and soil properties significantly affected the CRSW following light rainfall, but the soil properties were the most important factors influencing the CRSW under moderate and heavy rainfall. Our findings demonstrate that the mixed conifer–broad-leaved plantation is a more effective strategy for improving the soil water-holding capacity than the pure conifer plantation in subtropical regions, which is conducive to coping with the frequent seasonal droughts and extreme precipitation events.

Waterlogging tolerant tree species exert a critical role in forest preservation and the associated water conservation in flood prone areas. Clarifying the patterns and drivers of water uptake by waterlogging tolerant trees is crucial for forest management in flood-prone areas, especially in the scenario of precipitation changes in the estuary delta. Here, we uploaded the values of δD and δ18O obtained from soil and xylem waters to a Bayesian mixed model (MixSIAR) to determine the water use pattern of Taxodium distichum, a waterlogging tolerant tree, following different magnitudes of rainfall events in three sites of the Yangtze River Delta, China. We further conducted variation partitioning analysis and a random forest model to discern the dominant factor driving plant water uptake. Our results indicated that T. distichum mainly absorbed soil water from shallow soil layers (0–40 cm, 43.63%–74.70%), while the percentage of water uptake from deep soil layers was lower in the Yangtze River Delta (60–100 cm, 13.43%–35.90%), whether in light, moderate, or heavy rainfall conditions. Furthermore, our results demonstrated that tree traits, such as fine root biomass, are dominantly driving plant water uptake. These findings imply that waterlogging tolerant tree species could increase the percentage of water uptake from shallow soils by changing their plant attributes, which would effectively improve the water conservation of forests in the estuary delta.

Aims West Ordos Desert (WOD) in Inner Mongolia of China is characterized by unique geographical and ecological features to avoid the direct invasion of Quaternary Continental Glaciation, so it hosts many endangered relic species such as Tetraena mongolica, Ammopiptanthus mongolicus and Potaninia mongolica from Tertiary. However, how these plants utilize available water sources remains unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate the water utilization strategies of selected rare and endangered plant species in WOD by comparing hydrogen isotope ratios between their xylem water and possible water sources following four rainfall events of varying-intensities. Methods We measured the hydrogen isotope ratios of xylem water from T. mongolica, A. mongolicus and P. mongolica and an accompanying species Sarcozygium xanthoxylum and potential water sources (including precipitation and soil water in different soil layers from 0 to 150 cm) over 9 days following each of four varying-intensity rainfall events during the summer of 2012. And then calculated the percentage utilization of potential water sources by each species after each rainfall events using the linear mixing model. We also made the measurements of soil moisture and root biomass in favor of interpretation of plant water use strategies. Important Findings Tetraena mongolica, A. mongolicus and S. xanthoxylum primarily relied on deep soil water, whereas P. mongolica depended predominantly on rainwater. These rare and endangered desert plants had differential utilizations of available water sources, so some competition for limited water existed among some species. Tetraena mongolica had a competitive relationship in absorption of soil moisture with the same family species S. xanthoxylum, suggesting that T. mongolica and S. xanthoxylum should be restored separately at different areas in the WOD. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of water use strategies of these four plants and scientific evidence for protecting rare and endangered plants, maintaining regional species diversity, and developing effective vegetation restoration plans in the WOD. The antibacterial effect of carrying silver B2O3−SiO2−Na2O glass material was studied by means of antibacterial ring, nephelometery, MIC value, thin film attachment and microcalorimetry, respectively. The experimental results of five kinds of antibacterial test methods are almost identical and can verify that carrying silver B2O3−SiO2−Na2O glass material exerts an excellent antibacterial performance. Antibacterial ring and nephelometery are simple, quick, but the precision is restrictive. MIC value, thin film attachment method and microcalorimetry can quantitatively compare the antibacterial effects of the antibacterial glass material. Compared with the traditional microbe test methods, the microcalorimetry can analyze the inhibiting effect of the cell’s growth and metabolism on the antibacterial glass material by monitoring the thermal effect continuously and automatically. Implantable cervical vagus nerve stimulation (iVNS) is a representative and promising neuromodulation. However, the invasive nature restricts its application. Traditional auricular acupuncture treatment has a long history. The auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN) is a branch on the surface of the ear. Some studies demonstrates that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) would achieve similar effects as iVNS. TaVNS and iVNS share a common anatomical basis and acting mechanism. In this article, we made a comparison between iVNS and taVNS in indications and efficacy. The recent studies have revealed similar clinical efficacy of taVNS, taVNS would expand the indication of iVNS. High-quality clinical evidences are needed before taVNS become be an alternative of iVNS.
