Abstract

The Khaybar oasis is a cultural landscape that has been shaped over thousands of years by human occupation and wherecommunities continue to live to the present day. It lies on the edge of a large lava field called Ḥarrat Khaybar in north-west SaudiArabia and combines unique geology, rich archaeology, and spectacular traditional heritage. It has been preserved for millennia,and human presence seems to have been continuous from the earliest prehistoric times to the birth of Islam and beyond.This article presents a preliminary general assessment of the archaeology of this major Arabian oasis. It aims to introduce theobjectives and methods of our new survey and excavation project, the Khaybar Longue Durée Archaeological Project (2020–2024),supported by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), the French Agency for AlUla Development (AFALULA), and the FrenchCentre for Scientific Research (CNRS). It also highlights the preliminary results of field surveys carried out inside the RCU oasiscore zone in Khaybar in November 2020 and June 2021. The project yielded important discoveries in its first seasons of activity,such as the presence of Palaeolithic and Neolithic occupations, the identification of specific patterns of local desert kites, the firstanalyses of protohistoric funerary structures, the discovery of a monumental pre-Islamic outer wall that surrounded the oasisin the past, new pre-Islamic and Islamic sites, as well as a significant number of inscriptions and rock art from different periodsand traditions.

Abstract

This PhD fits into the scientific programme of LabEx Archimède: «Economics, Environment: exploitation of natural environment, economic systems, and environment dynamics around the Mediterranean from Neolithic to the end of Antiquity». It is also incorporated into the interdisciplinary programme Paléomex-Mahgreb of the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) concerning Mahgreb during Holocene whose palaeoenvironmental frame is still under construction. This thesis will compare the Holocene dynamics of two sub-catchments of Moulouya River, main Mediterranean river of Morocco. Main objectives will be: - To construct morphosedimentary and pedoclimatic frames during Holocene at a regional scale; - To characterise environmental evolutions subjected to climatic and/or anthropogenic controls; - To identify taphonomic biases at a landscape scale; - To propose a chronostratigraphic frame of socio-environmental evolutions during Holocene. The geoarchaeologic approach applied to the study of sedimentary archives at catchment scale will allow to discuss society-climate-environment interactions, namely to distinguish climatic and anthropogenic forcing governing hydro-ecosystems. This study aims therefore at assessing palaeoenvironmental impacts on the human communities, and reciprocally, their response in term of dynamics of population during Holocene., La thèse s’inscrit dans le programme scientifique du LabEx Archimède : « Economies, Environnement : exploitation du milieu, systèmes économiques, évolutions des milieux exploités autour de la Méditerranée du Néolithique à la fin de l’Antiquité ». Elle s’intègre également au projet interdisciplinaire Paléomex-Mahgreb du CNRS portant sur le Mahgreb holocène dont le cadre paléoenvironnemental est encore en cours de construction. Cette thèse aura pour sujet de confronter l'évolution holocène de deux sous-bassins versants de la Moulouya, le principal fleuve méditerranéen du Maroc. Les principaux objectifs seront de : -Construire les cadres morphosédimentaire et pédoclimatique holocène à une échelle régionale ; -Restituer les évolutions paysagères soumises aux contrôles climatiques et/ou anthropiques ; -Identifier les biais taphonomiques à l’échelle du paysage ; -Proposer un cadre chronostratigraphique des évolutions socio-environnementales au cours de l’Holocène. L’approche géoarchéologique appliquée à l’étude des archives sédimentaires à l’échelle du bassin-versant permettra de discuter des interactions société-climat-environnement, à savoir distinguer les forçages climatiques et forçages anthropiques régissant les hydro-écosystèmes. Cette étude vise donc à évaluer les impacts climato-environnementaux sur les communautés humaines, et réciproquement, leurs réponses en terme de dynamiques de peuplement au cours de l’Holocène.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper presents the first results of the geoarchaeological study of an unusual hilltop wetland, located within the protohistoric proto‐urban site of Corent in the French Massif Central. This small depression offers an exceptionally local sedimentary record that provided valuable data on long‐term human–environment interactions, as well as proto‐urbanization of the first millennium B.C.E. Field survey revealed a major archaeological discovery: a large ensemble of 114 Iron Age storage pits excavated in clayey deposits. The geoarchaeological analysis of stratigraphic logs and cross‐sections completed by geophysical survey and radiocarbon dating allowed us to refine the chronology of these structures. Here, we suggest these structures are probably contemporary with the Hallstatt occupation of the site (600–425 B.C.E.), consistent with the emergence at Corent of a short‐lived proto‐urban environment during this period. These investigations also allowed us to characterize the main evolution phases of the basin and the diversity of human impacts from first disturbance in the Early Neolithic to its final destruction in the Roman period. These findings highlight the nonlinear nature of the socio‐environmental interactions and the definitive shift to an “anthroposystem” as a consequence of major disturbance in the first Iron Age, centuries before the development of urban settlements in the oppida period.
