Cancer and depression are closely interrelated, particularly in patients with advanced cancer, who often present with comorbid anxiety and depression for various reasons. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the study of depression in cancer patients, with the aim of assessing the possible triggers, predictors, adverse events, and possible treatment options for depression in several common cancers. The objective of this narrative review is to synthesize the extant literature on the relationship between the occurrence and progression of depression in several common patient categories. The authors conducted a comprehensive review of 75 articles published in PubMed over the past five years. This review was further evaluated in the present paper. Ultimately, it was determined that depression is a prevalent and detrimental phenomenon among cancer patients, particularly those with advanced disease. Consequently, there is a pressing need to prioritize research and interventions aimed at improving the quality of life and psychosocial well-being of cancer patients, including those with advanced disease. The relationship between cancer and depression has been evolving dynamically in recent times. The current research findings indicate a strong association between cancer and depression. However, the direction of causality remains unclear. Background: Given the high prevalence of adolescent mental health problems, promoting understanding and implementation of protective factors is crucial for prevention and intervention efforts addressing adolescent mental health problems. This study aims to investigate whether consistency and inconsistency in protective factors are associated with adolescent mental health problems and to inform adolescent mental health interventions that target the unique needs of adolescents and promote adolescent mental health., Methods: We used multistage cluster sampling to conduct psychological resilience, social support, and mental health questionnaires from April to June 2023 among 10,653 Chinese adolescents (52.3 % were boys). Data were analyzed using polynomial regressions with response surface analysis., Results: The higher levels of psychological resilience and social support in adolescents were associated with fewer mental health problems (anxiety: a1 = -1.83, P < 0.001; depression: a1 = -2.44, P < 0.001; and perceived stress: a1 = -1.20, P < 0.001). When the level of psychological resilience was greater than social support, the greater the discrepancy the higher the perceived stress among adolescents (a3 = 1.19, P < 0.001). Background: Poor mental health among young adults in higher education is a growing concern. In recent years, the visibility of racism has sharply risen. Vicarious discrimination is defined as the secondhand witnessing of racism, and given society's increased accessibility to social media and the Internet, addressing indirect violence is urgently needed to inform anti-racism and mental health efforts. The current study examined associations between vicarious discrimination and mental health across a large sample of young college students in the United States., Methods: We analyzed data from the Healthy Minds Study (HMS; 2020-2021; N=130,566) and used multivariable logistic regression to examine whether past-year vicarious discrimination was associated with various mental health outcomes, adjusting for age, gender, race/ethnicity, and direct discrimination., Results: The sample was predominantly white (n=31,438, 63.66%) and female-identifying (n=34,313, 69.49%) with an average age of 21.1 years. Approximately 35.9% of the sample endorsed experiencing vicarious discrimination. Vicarious discrimination was associated with greater depression (OR:1.97; 95% CI: [1.86,2.09], p< 0.001), anxiety (OR:1.82; 95% CI: [1.72,1.92], p<0.001), languishing (OR:1.75; 95% CI: [1.65,1.87], p<0.001), perceived need for treatment (OR:2.24; 95% CI: [2.10,2.40], p<0.001), suicidal ideation (OR:1.86; 95% CI: [1.73,2.01], p<0.001), suicide plan (OR:1.91; 95% CI: [1.71,2.14], p<0.001), suicide attempt (OR:1.89; 95% CI: [1.51,2.36], p<0.001), self-injurious behavior (OR:2.0; 95% CI: [1.88,2.12], p<0.001), and loneliness (OR:1.67; 95% CI: [1.58,1.77], p<0.001)., Discussion: Consistent with growing literature, vicarious discrimination was associated with poorer mental health among young college students. Background: This study investigated sex differences in the age-varying trends of depressive symptoms, substance use, and their relationships throughout the adult lifespan. Using a nationwide sample from South Korea, this study aimed to confirm existing patterns and identify unique characteristics specific to the South Korean context., Method: Time-Varying Effect Modeling (TVEM) was applied to data from 17,484 participants (9987 women and 7497 men) in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey., Results: Consistent with global trends, the results revealed a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms among women and a greater prevalence of substance use among men. However, the findings also illuminated unique patterns within the South Korean context. Substance use among South Korean men peaked during their 40s, whereas South Korean women consistently exhibited lower rates of substance use. Additionally, a stronger association between depressive symptoms and substance use was identified in women compared to men., Limitations: The study used cross-sectional data, limiting the analysis of temporal dynamics between depressive symptoms and substance use. Additionally, TVEM cannot distinguish between aging and cohort effects. Furthermore, the assessments of depressive symptoms and substance use were based on self-report. Finally, the study did not include adolescents or sex and gender minorities in its sample., Conclusions: These results emphasize the need for targeted interventions, particularly among women in their 20s and older adulthood, where there is a heightened co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and substance use. Background: Pregnancy loss is arguably a traumatic and stressful life event that potentially impacts the emotional and behavioral health of those who experience it, especially adolescents. Research assessing this relationship has primarily focused on adult women populations., Methods: Using data from National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, a cross-sectional research design was employed to investigate whether pregnancy loss outcomes are associated with depressive mood and suicidal behavior (i.e., suicidal thoughts and suicide attempt) among adolescent girls (N = 6, 913). We also investigated the mediating effect of depressive mood. Initially, an all-encompassing pregnancy loss variable was used, which included abortions and miscarriages. Acknowledging the differences between these pregnancy loss outcomes, we created separate measures for each., Results: Using the all-encompassing pregnancy loss variable, findings from logistic regression analyses showed that pregnancy loss is positively and significantly associated with depressive mood and suicidal behaviors. Depressive mood mediated the relationship between pregnancy loss and suicidal behaviors. Miscarriage was positively and significantly associated with suicidal thoughts as well as attempting suicide. Depressive mood mediated the relationship between miscarriage and suicidal thoughts, while only partially mediating the relationship between miscarriage and suicide attempt. No significant effects were observed for abortion on outcomes of interest., Limitations: Cross-sectional analyses were performed limiting our ability to make casual inferences., Conclusions: Pregnancy loss is associated with depressive mood and suicidal behavior, especially among adolescent girls who experience a miscarriage. Background: Poor sleep is prevalent in adolescents with bipolar disorder, precedes illness onset, and is associated with worse mood symptoms. We examined interrelationships between sleep quality and mood symptoms in adolescents with bipolar disorder, particularly effects of sleep quality on emergent mood symptoms., Methods: Adolescents with bipolar disorder participated in a two-year longitudinal treatment study. Sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI) was assessed quarterly during treatment (baseline, 3-, 6-, 9-, 12-month visits) and twice during follow-up (18-, 24-month visits). Mood symptoms (ALIFE Psychiatric Status Ratings) were retrospectively rated weekly by an independent clinician. Lag models tested whether sleep quality predicted next month's mood symptoms and whether mood symptoms predicted future sleep quality., Results: Adolescents with bipolar disorder had poor sleep quality. Sleep quality initially improved but remained stable thereafter. Worse sleep quality at 6-months predicted worse depression, hypomania, and suicidal ideation the following month. Sleep quality was worse for adolescents who had a suicide attempt during the study compared to those who did not and was worse preceding months with a suicide attempt compared to months without attempts. Background: Oral health influences the quality of life of older adults. Further, depression is negatively associated with oral health. However, little is known about this relationship among older adults with chronic health conditions. Additionally, since oral health and depression differ between genders, this study aimed to investigate the effect of transitions in depressive symptoms on oral health among older adults with chronic health conditions by gender., Methods: We used data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2020-2022). The study sample comprised 2836 older adults (1104 men; 1732 women). We adopted multiple linear regression to examine the association between depressive symptom transitions and oral health by gender., Results: The new onset depression symptoms were significantly associated with the deterioration of oral health in men (β = -5.4308) and women (β = -4.8328). Our study showed a gender-specific association between new onset depressive symptoms and particular domains of oral health. For men, the association was slightly more negative in psychosocial function (β = -2.1177) while women presented lower GOHAI scores in both the physical function domain (β = -1.8800) and the psychosocial function domain (β = -1.8801)., Limitations: The data used in this study were self-reported via a survey; thus, self-report bias may be a relevant concern., Conclusion: To prevent deterioration in oral health, depressive symptoms must be detected and addressed early among older adults with chronic conditions. Administration mode of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) may influence responses. We assessed if Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - Depression subscale (HADS-D) item responses and scores were associated with administration mode. We compared (1) self-administration versus interview-administration; within self-administration (2) research or medical setting versus private; and (3) pen-and-paper versus electronic; and within interview-administration (4) in-person versus phone. We analysed individual participant data meta-analysis datasets with item-level data for the PHQ-9 (N = 34,529), EPDS (N = 16,813), and HADS-D (N = 16,768). We used multiple indicator multiple cause models to assess differential item functioning (DIF) by administration mode. We found statistically significant DIF for most items on all measures due to large samples, but influence on total scores was negligible. In 10 comparisons conducted across the PHQ-9, EPDS, and HADS-D, Pearson's correlations and intraclass correlation coefficients between latent depression symptom scores from models that did or did not account for DIF were between 0.995 and 1.000. Total PHQ-9, EPDS, and HADS-D scores did not differ materially across administration modes. Background: Many late adolescents experience a state of psychological sub-health, requiring early recognition and intervention. This study aims to assess the psychological state of late Chinese adolescents and uncover developmental trend of mental health through network analysis., Method: We analyzed data from 9072 Chinese high school adolescents in Shandong Province surveyed in 2020-2021, and divided them into the normal, the suspected, and the abnormal groups based on Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) scores. Network analysis was employed to identify the core symptoms and bridge symptoms across different states., Results: Anxiety and depression were the most central symptoms, without gender differences. Core symptoms, network structure, and network invulnerability varied across different psychological states. The abnormal group exhibited the highest value of natural connectivity, followed by the suspected and normal groups. This pattern extended to bridge networks. Background: As hypothesized in the Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model, metacognitive beliefs are associated with anxiety and depression in adults. An important question is the extent to which such effects are present in children and adolescents, with the implication that the model may also apply to young people. The aim of this meta-analysis was to synthesize results on the nature and magnitude of associations between metacognitive beliefs and anxiety and depression in children and adolescents., Methods: Systematic searches were conducted to identify studies that investigated: (1) group differences in metacognitive beliefs in clinical compared to non-clinical samples or (2) correlations between metacognitive beliefs and symptoms of anxiety and depression., Results: Forty papers were identified comprising a total sample of 9,887 participants aged 7-18 years. Meta-analyses revealed that clinical samples endorsed significantly elevated metacognitive beliefs on four out of the five domains measured (i.e., negative beliefs about worry, cognitive confidence, need for control, and cognitive self-consciousness, with the only exception being positive beliefs about worry) compared to non-clinical samples with a small to large effect (Hedges' gs = 0.45-1.22). Moreover, all five domains of metacognitive beliefs were significantly and positively correlated with symptoms of anxiety and depression of a small to large effect (rs = .24-.53). Background: The assessment of hopelessness plays a significant role in preventing various psychological disorders and major life events within the general population. However, the psychometric properties of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) have been a subject of controversy, primarily studied in clinical groups. The aim of the present study was to gain new psychometric insights and propose a new short version of the BHS for the general population using the Item Response Theory (IRT) approach., Methods: A total of 2164 Argentinean individuals completed the BHS alongside the Inventory of Suicide Orientation-30. We compared IRT models with two and three parameters for the original BHS version, exploring the removal of redundant and less informative items. Convergent and discriminant validity was also examined., Results: Our results support the 2PL model for the BHS-19. In addition, the BHS-10 short version adequately depicted the same range of the measured trait as the original version, showing reasonable measurement accuracy in the middle-high levels of the trait (marginal reliability = 0.70, Cronbach's α = 0.86). Background: The use of virtual reality (VR)-based biofeedback (BF), a relatively new intervention, is a non-pharmacological treatment of depressive and anxiety symptoms. However, studies on VR-based BF are lacking and inconclusive., Methods: A total of 131 adults were recruited from the community. Participants who scored ≥10 on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) or ≥9 on the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) were included in the group with depressive or anxiety symptoms (DAS group), and others as the healthy control group (HC group). Participants from the DAS group were randomly assigned to VR-based or conventional BF intervention. All individuals visited at three times (weeks 0, 2, and 4), and completed the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and a visual analog scale (VAS) before and after the intervention, and PHQ-9 at the beginning and final visit., Results: The analysis included a total of 118 participants (DAS/VR: 40, DAS/BF: 38, HC/VR: 40). There was no significant difference in demographic variables among the three groups. After the intervention, the DAS/VR group exhibited significant decreases in MADRS (70.0 %), PHQ-9 (64.1 %), STAI (29.5 %), and VAS (61.7 %) scores compared to the baseline (p <0.001). There were no significant differences between the effects of VR-based BF and conventional BF with a therapist. Background: This study aims to explore the mediating and moderating effect of health-promoting lifestyles on the relationship between frailty and depressive symptoms to provide a practical reference for effectively promoting the mental health of older adults., Methods: A cross-sectional survey of community-dwelling older adults (n = 3107) was conducted in three cities of Ningxia Province, China. Depressive symptoms, frailty, and health-promoting lifestyles were assessed through the 30-item Geriatric Depression Scale, frailty scale, and health-promoting Lifestyle profile-II, respectively. The Bootstrap methods PROCESS program is employed to test the mediation and moderation model., Results: The findings indicated that health-promoting lifestyles are negatively related to depressive symptoms and frailty, while frailty is positively associated with depressive symptoms. Health-promoting lifestyles have mediated the relationship between frailty and depressive symptoms. Besides, the health-promoting lifestyles weakened the positive relationship between frailty and depression symptoms; there existed a moderating effect of health-promoting lifestyles on the relationship between frailty and depression symptoms among older adults., Limitations: Given the cross-sectional study, it is impossible to make causal inferences., Conclusions: A health-promoting lifestyle might be a protective factor for older adults' health in China. The mediating and moderating effect of a health-promoting lifestyle on the relationship between frailty and depression symptoms among older adults should be integrated to achieve maximum utility. Background: A critical challenge in the study and management of major depressive disorder (MDD) is predicting relapse. We examined the temporal correlation/coupling between depression and anxiety (called Depression-Anxiety Coupling Strength, DACS) as a predictor of relapse in patients with MDD., Methods: We followed 97 patients with remitted MDD for an average of 394 days. Patients completed weekly self-ratings of depression and anxiety symptoms using the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptoms (QIDS-SR) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7). Using these longitudinal ratings we computed DACS as random slopes in a linear mixed effects model reflecting individual-specific degree of correlation between depression and anxiety across time points. We then tested DACS as an independent variable in a Cox proportional hazards model to predict relapse., Results: A total of 28 patients (29 %) relapsed during the follow-up period. DACS significantly predicted confirmed relapse (hazard ratio [HR] 1.5, 95 % CI [1.01, 2.22], p = 0.043; Concordance 0.79 [SE 0.04]). This effect was independent of baseline depressive or anxiety symptoms or their average levels over the follow-up period, and was identifiable more than one month before relapse onset., Limitations: Small sample size, in a single study. Narrow phenotype and comorbidity profiles., Conclusions: DACS may offer opportunities for developing novel strategies for personalized monitoring, early detection, and intervention. Background: Although anxiety and depression have been associated with adverse outcomes in chronic heart failure (HF), data on temporal evolution of these symptoms are scarce. We aimed to investigate the association between repeatedly measured depression and anxiety symptoms and clinical outcome in chronic HF patients., Methods: In this prospective observational study, outpatients with chronic HF were included and followed-up for a maximum of 2.5 years. The hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) questionnaire was conducted every six months. The primary endpoint was a composite of HF hospitalization, cardiovascular death, heart transplantation and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Cox and joint models were used to investigate the association between the HADS score and the endpoint., Results: A total of 362 patients filled out a median (25th-75th percentile) of 3 [2-4] questionnaires each. Mean ± SD age was 63 ± 13 years, 72% were men. Anxiety scores remained relatively stable leading up to the endpoint, while depression scores increased. Higher baseline depression scores were significantly associated with the endpoint (hazard ratio [HR] 1.68 and 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.19-2.36 per log(score+1), p = 0.003), while higher baseline anxiety scores did not reach statistical significance (HR [95% CI] 1.34 [0.99-1.83], p = 0.061). When repeatedly measured, both higher anxiety (HR [95% CI] 1.57[1.07-2.30], p = 0.022) and depression (HR [95% CI] 2.04 [1.39-3.06], p < 0.001) scores were significantly associated with the endpoint., Conclusion: Serial measurements of depression and anxiety symptoms identify chronic HF patients with increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes. Background: This study aims to describe maternal depressive symptoms (MDS) trajectories in a longitudinal study extending from pregnancy to 27 years after the birth of the firstborn child. We also explored the associations of both MDS trajectories and child internalizing and externalizing problem trajectories with maternal adjustment (adaptive functioning, emotional and behavioral problems)., Methods: The population-based study was conducted in Tampere, Finland, and the sample comprised 356 first-time mothers. MDS were screened with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale during pregnancy, first week after delivery, 2 and 6 months postnatally, and when the child was 4-5, 8-9, 16-17, and 26-27 years of age. The internalizing and externalizing problems of the children were assessed with the Child Behavior Checklist when the child was 4-5, 8-9, and 16-17 years of age. Maternal adaptive functioning and internalizing and externalizing problems were assessed with the Adult Self Report at 26-27 years after the birth of the first child. Complete follow-up data were available for 168 mothers., Results: We describe a three-group trajectory model of MDS (High Stable, Low Stable, Very Low). Elevated depressive symptom patterns were associated with less optimal maternal outcomes regarding both adaptive and problem dimensions. Background: Social support is a robust predictor of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although the inverse relationship between perceived social support and PTSD (social causation model) is supported, less is understood about the antecedents of the social causation model. Further, there is limited research in non-Western psychiatric populations that experience elevated rates of trauma and PTSD (e.g., mood disorders). The present study evaluated whether cumulative traumatic life events influenced current PTSD symptoms through maladaptive personality traits and perceptions of social support among Asian patients with mood disorders., Methods: A total of 200 Asian patients (77.5 % Chinese) with mood disorders were assessed for maladaptive personality traits, perceptions of social support, cumulative traumatic life events, PTSD, and depressive symptoms. Structural equation modelling was conducted to evaluate the extended social causation model., Results: The extended social causation model demonstrated acceptable fit to the data (Comparative Fit Index [CFI] = 0.90; absolute Root Mean Square Error of Approximation [RMSEA] = 0.08). Background: Little is known about the collective patterns of health-related behaviors of older adults living alone. We aimed to identify subgroups of older adults living alone based on their health lifestyle and examine the relationship between these subgroups and sociodemographic characteristics, life satisfaction, and depressive symptoms., Methods: A total of 3137 older adults living alone were sampled from the 2020 National Survey of Older Koreans. Latent class analysis was performed using 11 health-related behaviors: smoking; alcohol consumption; fruit, vegetable, and dairy product consumption; exercise; cultural leisure; social groups; educational activities; health check-ups; and dementia screening. Multinomial logistic and multiple linear regression analyses were performed., Results: Three classes were identified: Consistently Healthy (CH), Moderately Healthy but Inactive (MHI), and Unhealthy but Active (UA). Compared to the CH, members of the MHI tend to have no formal education and rarely meet relatives. Members of the UA were more likely to be male and employed. The MHI and UA were more likely to have lower incomes, meet with children less frequently or have no children, and rarely meet friends, neighbors, and acquaintances when compared to the CH. Background: Pregnancy can be experienced as a significant transition for many women with associated body dissatisfaction, depression, pregnancy-related anxiety, and disordered eating attitudes. Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU) creates abundant opportunities for women to compare themselves with others and expose themselves to sociocultural influences which may increase body dissatisfaction and psychological distress., Aims: This study examined whether the relationship between PSMU and psychological distress (defined as depression, pregnancy-related anxiety and disordered eating attitudes) was mediated by negative social comparisons and body dissatisfaction., Method: A sample of 225 pregnant Australian women (M age  = 31.91 years, SD age  = 4.39) recruited online, completed self-report measures related to the variables of interest., Results: PSMU was associated with higher levels of depression, pregnancy-related anxiety, and disordered eating attitudes. Negative social comparisons and body dissatisfaction partially mediated the relationship between PSMU and pregnancy-related anxiety and depression, and fully mediated the relationship between PSMU and disordered eating attitudes., Limitations: Cross-sectional nature of the study limited our ability to determine the direction of the relationships. Moreover, the recruitment method via social media led to high rates of non-completion., Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that problematic social media usage during pregnancy may increase depression, pregnancy-related anxiety and disordered eating attitudes. Background: Depression and suicidal ideation often co-occur in children and adolescents, yet they possess distinct characteristics. This study sought to identify the different related factors associated with depression and suicidal ideation., Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional survey collected data from Chinese children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 (N = 160,962; 48.91 % girls). The survey included inquiries about demographics, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, perceived stress, academic burnout, internet addiction, non-suicidal self-injury, bullying, and being bullied. Fifteen machine learning algorithms were conducted to identify the different related factors associated with depression and suicidal ideation. Additionally, we conducted external validation on an independent sample of 1,812,889 children and adolescents., Results: Our findings revealed seven related factors linked to depression and six associated with suicidal ideation, with average accuracy rates of 86.86 % and 85.82 %, respectively. For depression, the most influential factors were anxiety, perceived stress, academic burnout, internet addiction, non-suicidal self-injury, experience of bullying, and age. Similarly, anxiety, non-suicidal self-injury, perceived stress, internet addiction, academic burnout, and age emerged as paramount factors for suicidal ideation. Moreover, these related factors showed notable variations in their predictive capacities for depression and suicidal ideation across different subgroups., Conclusion: Anxiety emerged as the predominant shared factor for both depression and suicidal ideation, whereas the other related factors displayed distinct predictive patterns for each condition. Objective: This prospective cohort study, conducted at the Fenglin Community Health Service Center (FCHC) in Xuhui District, Shanghai, aimed to investigate the impact of maternal psychological status on offspring neurodevelopment., Methods: A total of 430 mother-child pairs were included, with pregnant women enrolled between February 18, 2020, and April 19, 2021. Face-to-face interviews and electronic data collection on demographic characteristics, health conditions and medical history were employed at various stages of pregnancy and postpartum. Maternal depression and anxiety were assessed using the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scales, while offspring neurodevelopment was measured at six months using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3rd Edition (ASQ-3). In statistical analyses, group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) was employed to identify the latent groups for maternal psychological trajectories, including depression and anxiety, and logistic regression was used to explore associations between maternal psychological trajectories and offspring neurodevelopment, adjusting for potential confounders., Results: Five latent trajectory groups were identified for both depression and anxiety, exhibiting distinct patterns over time. Results indicated that maternal psychological trajectories were associated with various domains of offspring neurodevelopment, including communication, problem-solving, personal-social, and gross motor skills. Specifically, mothers in trajectory groups characterized by the highest level of depression or anxiety showed increased odds of offspring neurodevelopmental delays compared to reference groups., Conclusion: Our findings underscore the importance of maternal mental health during the perinatal period and highlight the potential implications for offspring neurodevelopment. Objective: We aimed to examine whether positive and negative coping styles mediated the influences of childhood trauma on NSSI or depressive severity in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD)., Methods: The Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory Chinese Revised Edition (OSIC), the short-form Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF), and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ) were evaluated in 313 adolescents with MDD., Results: MDD adolescents with NSSI had higher CTQ-SF total score, emotional and sexual abuse subscale scores, but lower CDI total and subscale scores compared to the patients without NSSI. The multiple linear regression analysis revealed that emotional abuse (β = 0.075, 95 % CI: 0.042-0.107) and ineffectiveness (β = -0.084, 95 % CI: -0.160 ∼ -0.009) were significantly associated with the frequency of NSSI in adolescents with MDD, but emotional abuse (β = 0.884, 95 % CI: 0.570-1.197), sexual abuse (β = 0.825, 95 % CI: 0.527-1.124) and negative coping style (β = 0.370, 95 % CI: 0.036-0.704) were independently associated with the depressive severity in these adolescents. Background: Disrupted sleep and rest-activity pattern are common clinical features in depressed individuals. This meta-analysis compared sleep and circadian rest-activity rhythms in people with major depressive disorder (MDD) or depressive symptoms and healthy controls., Methods: Eligible studies were identified in five databases up to December 2023. The search yielded 53 studies with a total of 11,115 participants, including 4000 depressed participants and 7115 healthy controls., Results: Pooled meta-analyses demonstrated that depressed individuals have significantly longer sleep latency (SMD = 0.23, 95 % CI: 0.12 to 0.33) and wake time after sleep onset (SMD = 0.37, 95 % CI: 0.22 to 0.52), lower sleep efficiency (SMD = -0.41, 95 % CI: -0.56 to -0.25), more nocturnal awakenings (SMD = 0.58, 95 % CI: 0.29 to 0.88), lower MESOR (SMD = -0.54, 95 % CI: -0.81 to -0.28), amplitude (SMD = -0.33, 95 % CI: -0.57 to -0.09), and interdaily stability (SMD = -0.17, 95 % CI: -0.28 to -0.05), less daytime (SMD = -0.79, 95 % CI: -1.08 to -0.49) and total activities (SMD = -0.89, 95 % CI: -1.28 to -0.50) when compared with healthy controls., Limitations: Most of the included studies reported separate sleep and activity parameters instead of 24-hour rest-activity rhythms. The variabilities among actigraphy devices and the types of participants recruited also impede precise comparisons., Conclusions: The findings emerging from this study offered a better understanding of sleep and rest-activity rhythm in individuals with MDD or depressive symptoms. Background: Previous research indicates an association of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) with suicidal thoughts and behaviours, but has largely relied on small cohorts drawn from specialist clinics., Methods: Anonymised health-records from the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust between 2007 and 2019 were systematically searched using the Clinical Record Interactive Search data system., Results: 298 patients diagnosed with BDD between age 12 and 65 years were identified. 206 (69 %) had experienced lifetime suicidal ideation. 149 (50 %) had recorded lifetime acts of self-harm or suicide attempts, most commonly involving cutting and self-poisoning. Rates of self-harm/suicide attempts were similar in those diagnosed before or after 18 years. Comorbid depression was associated with suicidal ideation (OR: 4.26 95% CI 2.07-9.72). Additionally, comorbid depression, OCD and anxiety were all associated with self-harm/suicide attempts (OR: 1.94 95% CI 1.15-3.31, OR: 1.99 95% CI 1.09-3.73, and OR: 1.93 95% CI 1.09-3.45, respectively). The presence of two or more psychiatric comorbidities was associated with a significantly elevated likelihood of suicidal ideation (OR: 7.06 95% CI 2.80-21.7) and self-harm/suicide attempts (OR: 4.62 95% CI 2.32-9.62)., Limitations: It is likely that BDD was under-diagnosed in the cohort, and those identified may not be representative. Background: Informal care is a common form of social support, which can vary greatly in its intensity. While views of aging have shown to be relevant to mental health before, we aim to analyze whether the association between views of aging and depressive symptoms is influenced by the provision of informal care and its intensity., Methods: Data of six waves of the Health and Retirement Study in the United States was used. The sample includes up to 41,058 observations pooled over six waves of community-dwelling adults aged ≥50 years. Depressive symptoms were measured with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD) and attitudes towards own aging (ATOA) with the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (higher score indicates positive attitudes); informal caregiving (no/yes) and caregiving intensity (moderate, intense) were surveyed. Adjusted fixed effects regression analysis with robust standard errors, and with caregiving as moderator variable were calculated., Results: Informal caregiving did not interact with ATOA. However, transitioning into intense caregiving significantly moderated the association between ATOA and depressive symptoms. Lower depressive symptoms were associated with better ATOA and this association was significantly stronger in the intense caregiving condition than in the non-caregiving condition. No significant interaction effects were found between any form of caregiving and subjective age., Limitations: The possibility of reciprocal effects cannot be excluded., Conclusion: Internalized ageism and depressive symptoms are more strongly related among caregivers who provide intense care. Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a promising tool for identifying the physiological biomarkers of fibromyalgia (FM). Evidence suggests differences in power band and density between individuals with FM and healthy controls. EEG changes appear to be associated with pain intensity; however, their relationship with the quality of pain has not been examined. We aimed to investigate whether abnormal EEG in the frontal and central points of the 10-20 EEG system in individuals with FM is associated with pain's sensory-discriminative and affective-motivational dimensions. The association between EEG and the two dimensions of emotional disorders (depression and anxiety) was also investigated., Methods: In this cross-sectional pilot study, pain experience (pain rating index [PRI]) and two dimensions of emotional disorders (depression and anxiety) were assessed using the McGill Pain Questionnaire (PRI-sensory and PRI-affective) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), respectively. In quantitative EEG analysis, the relative spectral power of each frequency band (delta, theta, alpha, and beta) was identified in the frontal and central points during rest., Results: A negative correlation was found between the relative spectral power for the delta bands in the frontal (r= -0.656; p = 0.028) and central points (r= -0.624; p = 0.040) and the PRI-affective scores. A positive correlation was found between the alpha bands in the frontal (r = 0.642; p = 0.033) and central points (r = 0.642; p = 0.033) and the PRI-affective scores. Breast cancer impacts the psychological well-being of women, leaving them at risk of developing depression, anxiety, and other stress-related disorders. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) is a widely used measure, although empirical evidence regarding its psychometric properties in the breast cancer population is limited. The purpose of this study was to conduct an exhaustive analysis of the psychometric properties of the DASS-21 in a sample of Spanish women diagnosed with breast cancer. Participants were 289 breast cancer patients who completed the DASS-21 and other questionnaires measuring life satisfaction, positive and negative affect, flourishing, perceived stress, and breast cancer-specific stressors. In terms of validity evidence based on the internal structure of the DASS-21, adequate fit indices were obtained for the model based on three first-order factors (depression, anxiety, stress) and one second-order factor (general psychological distress). Reliability coefficients (McDonald's omega) ranged from .84 to .95. Validity evidence based on relationships with other variables was also provided by moderate and strong correlations with well-being indicators and stress measures. The results support the use of the DASS-21 for measuring general psychological distress in the breast cancer context, where it may provide useful information for the design of psychological interventions with patients., (© 2024. When making decisions in everyday life, we often rely on an internally generated sense of confidence to help us revise and direct future behaviours. For instance, confidence directly informs whether further information should be sought prior to commitment to a final decision. Many studies have shown that aging and both clinical and sub-clinical symptoms of psychopathology are associated with systematic alterations in confidence. However, it remains unknown whether these confidence distortions influence information-seeking behaviour. We investigated this question in a large general population sample (N = 908). Participants completed a battery of psychiatric symptom questionnaires and performed a perceptual decision-making task with confidence ratings in which they were offered the option to seek helpful information (at a cost) before committing to a final decision. Replicating previous findings, an 'anxious-depression' (AD) symptom dimension was associated with systematically low confidence, despite no detriment in objective task accuracy. Conversely, a 'compulsive behaviour and intrusive thoughts' (CIT) dimension was associated with impaired task accuracy but paradoxical over-confidence. However, neither symptom dimension was significantly associated with an increased or decreased tendency to seek information. Hence, participants scoring highly for AD or CIT did not use the option to information seek any more than average to either increase their confidence (AD) or improve the accuracy of their decisions (CIT). In contrast, older age was associated with impaired accuracy and decreased confidence initially, but increased information seeking behaviour mediated increases in both accuracy and confidence for final decisions. Hence, older adults used the information seeking option to overcome initial deficits in objective performance and to increase their confidence accordingly. Background: The main objective of this study was to examine the burden of schizophrenia, depression, Alzheimer's disease/dementia, and stroke on caregivers and non-caregivers in Japan. This study also aimed to provide a comparative landscape on the burden of caregiving for each disorder., Methods: The Japan National Health and Wellness Survey database, 2016 and 2018 was used in this study. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL), work productivity, and health care utilization were assessed using a self-administered, Internet-based questionnaire. The burden of caregiving experienced by each group of caregivers was compared with background-matched non-caregivers (controls) as well as with caregivers of patients with each disorder., Results: Caregivers of patients with schizophrenia, depression, Alzheimer's disease/dementia, or stroke had lower HRQoL, higher healthcare costs and work productivity impairment than non-caregivers. Furthermore, caregivers of patients with psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and depression had lower HRQoL and work productivity than caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease/dementia and stroke. In addition, according to the Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA), caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and depression were more inclined to perceive a loss in physical strength and financial burden to the same extent as their self-esteem., Conclusions: This study indicated a substantial caregiving burden among caregivers of patients with psychiatric and neurological diseases in Japan. Background: As individuals living with HIV age, they often experience both physical and psychological symptoms-along with potential reductions in social support-which can significantly affect their health-related quality of life (HRQOL)-a crucial measure in HIV care. However, research exploring the potential predictive roles of social support and symptom experiences in HRQOL among older people living with HIV (PLWH) is limited., Objectives: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate relationships between social support, symptom experiences, and HRQOL in older adults with HIV., Methods: Older adults with HIV aged ≥50 years completed surveys on demographic and HIV-related characteristics, social support, four symptoms, and HRQOL. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were used to determine predictors for six HRQOL domains., Results: Among the 141 PLWH, significant associations were found between fatigue and health perceptions, physical functioning, and role functioning. Sleep disturbance was a significant predictor of health perceptions and social functioning. Anxiety displayed associations with physical functioning, role functioning, mental health, and pain. Depression was linked to health perceptions and mental health aspects of HRQOL. Objective: People with Behçet's Disease, as many individuals with chronic diseases, often face depression, anxiety, poor quality of life and sexual problems. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate depression, anxiety, and sexual dysfuntions in people with Behcet's Disease., Method: A total of 100 participants, 50 patients (29 female) and 50 healthy volunteers (28 female), participated in the study. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) were administered to the participants., Results: Depression and sexual dysfunctions were significantly related with Behçet's Disease. In our study, all female participants with Behçet's Disease had problems in sexual functions. Erectile dysfunction was more frequent in participants with Behcet's. The results also showed that there is a significant relationship between depression and orgasmic function (p=0.004), sexual desire (p=0.028), sexual satisfaction (p=0.023), and general satisfaction (p=0.028). There was a significant difference between people with Behçet's Disease (10.54±6.45) and healthy group (7.36 ±6.13) in depression scores (p=0.009). Patients with systemic involvement and those with mucocutaneous involvement were found to be similar in terms of BDI and BAI scores (p>0.05)., Conclusion: Behçet's Disease was found to be a risk factor for depression and sexual dysfunctions.

Background: Frailty is a multidimensional geriatric syndrome associated with physical, psychological and social changes. There is a paucity of research on frailty in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries, especially Ethiopia., Objectives: To assess the initial correlations among frailty, nutritional status, depression and QOL (quality of life) in a group of older people in Ethiopia who are later enrolled in a study examining the effects of a nurse-led community intervention on frailty and related health outcomes., Methods: Data from 68 community-dwelling individuals 60 years of age, or over, were collected. Frailty was measured using the Amharic version of the Tilburg Frailty Indicator. The statistical analysis included Spearman's rank correlation coefficient for degrees of association, Mann-Whitney U-test for variables with two categories and Kruskal-Wallis for variables with three or more categories., Results: The mean frailty score for participants was 7.3 (±1.9). Participants with higher frailty scores had lower nutritional status (r s  = -0.46, p < 0.01). There was a statistically significant relationship (positive) between frailty scores and depression (r s  = 0.39, p < 0.01). Depressed (Md = 9, n = 23) and non-depressed frail older people (Md = 7, n = 45) showed a significant difference in their overall frailty score, U = 330.50, z = -2.49, p = 0.01, r = 0.30. There was an inverse significant association between the level of frailty across different domains in the QOL: physical (r s  = -0.44, p < 0.01), psychological (r s  = -0.45, p < 0.01), social relations (r s  = -0.29, p < 0.05) and environmental (r s  = -0.47, p < 0.01)., Conclusion: The findings from this study were consistent with those from across middle-income and high-income countries., Implications for Practice: This research indicates that older people living in communities who are identified as frail often suffer from a poor nutritional status, depression and reduced QOL. A growing body of evidence has provided support for the beneficial impact of human-animal interactions on a range of biological, social, and psychological outcomes for humans; however, less is conclusively known about the association between animal companionship and psycho-social health specifically among aging populations. In this study, we assessed the association between animal companionship and psycho-social well-being in a large sample (N = 30,865) of community dwelling Canadians aged 45 and older. Using cross-sectional data from the Canadian Community Health Survey-Healthy Aging, we conducted hierarchical multiple regression to assess the relationship between animal companionship and four domains of psycho-social well-being (satisfaction with life, loneliness, depression, and levels of social support) after controlling for socio-demographic factors and psycho-social measures. Results indicate that those with animal companionship report significantly higher levels of social support than aging Canadians without animal companionship; however, animal companionship was also associated with significantly lower levels of life satisfaction and higher levels of both loneliness and depression. These findings complicate the existing literature on human-animal interactions by suggesting the benefits associated with animal companionship may vary across distinct domains of psycho-social health. As such, results from this study highlight the need for more nuanced model specifications when assessing the relationship between animal companionship and psycho-social well-being. Objective: Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (E/T/I) has provided life-changing pharmacotherapy for many people with cystic fibrosis (CF), but conflicting literature exists regarding the effect on mental health. While some reports suggest E/T/I may induce adverse psychiatric symptoms, others report improvements in mental health symptoms. To add to this growing body of knowledge, we retrospectively analyzed depression and anxiety symptoms before and after E/T/I initiation in adults with CF at a single large US CF center., Method: Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scores recorded in a database were studied. Patients with scores collected before and after E/T/I initiation were included. Regression analyses described associations between score changes and age, race, ethnicity, sex, CFTR variant, and prior depression and/or anxiety diagnoses. Secondary analyses examined possible confounding effects of the COVID-19 pandemic., Results: There was no change in mean GAD-7 (0.5 ± 5.3, p = 0.41) or PHQ-9 (-0.02 ± 6.0, p = 0.97) scores following initiation of E/T/I (N = 86). A trend between a prior diagnosis of depression and worsening in PHQ-9 post-E/T/I was observed (OR 3.58; p = 0.054)., Conclusions: Treatment with E/T/I does not lead to changes in depression or anxiety symptoms at the population level in this single center cohort study. Migraine can cause different pain activity patterns. This cross-sectional study examines the relationship between pain activity patterns and physical and psychological aspects and sleep quality in women with migraine. Women diagnosed with migraine ( n  = 129) were reached through social media and announcements. Outcome measures were Pattern of Activity Measure-Pain (POAM-P) (avoidance, overdoing, pacing), Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). While there was a negative correlation between the POAMP-avoidance and the IPAQ-SF rho = -0.178), there were positive correlations between the POAMP-avoidance and the MIDAS (rho = 0.454), the DASS-21-depression (rho = 0.413), the DASS-21-anxiety (rho = 0.321), and the DASS-21-stress (rho = 0.446). There were positive correlations between the POAMP-overdoing, and the DASS-21-depression (rho = 0.229), the DASS-21-stress (rho = 0.207), and the PSQI (rho = 0.217). There were also positive correlations between the POAMP-pacing and the MIDAS (rho = 0.283), the DASS-21-depression (rho = 0.250), and the DASS-21-anxiety (rho = 0.213) ( p < .05). Pain activity patterns in women with migraines were associated with their disability, physical activity, psychological state, and sleep quality. Determining treatment based on pain activity patterns can improve migraine treatment outcomes.

Parents and children who have recently immigrated from the Chinese mainland to Hong Kong face various challenges, including psychological and sociocultural adaptation difficulties. In collaboration with community partners, our research team has developed and implemented culturally sensitive and preventive parent-child parallel interventions to enhance positive adaptation among immigrant parents and children. Two interventions were conducted in this randomized controlled trial: an emotion regulation (ER) arm, which addressed psychological adaptation by reducing parent-child conflicts and improving emotions, and an information provision (IP) arm targeting sociocultural adaptation by increasing participants' knowledge about Hong Kong. The study randomly assigned 113 and 73 parent-child pairs (allocation ratio 3:2) into the ER and IP arms, respectively. Parents and children attended four two-hour weekly sessions of their assigned intervention and completed assessments before, immediately after, and one month following the intervention. The results showed that in the ER arm, parents showed improved positive affect, and children reported decreases in parent-child conflicts more than their counterparts in the IP arm. In the IP arm, parents and children increased their knowledge, and parents decreased sociocultural adaptation difficulties more than their counterparts in the ER arm. In addition, the moderation analyses showed that in both interventions, parents and children with elevated baseline depressive symptoms obtained greater benefits relative to their counterparts with fewer symptoms. Such marked improvements were seen among parents in negative affect and adaptation difficulties and among children in parent-child conflict, positive and negative affect in the ER arm. More improvements were noted among parents in negative affect and sociocultural adaptation difficulties and among children in negative affect in the IP arm. Future studies are suggested to develop and provide parent-child parallel interventions targeting both psychological and sociocultural adaptations to parents and children with heightened baseline depressive symptoms to facilitate their positive adaptation in Hong Kong., (Copyright © 2024. This three-wave longitudinal study of 297 community adults (mean age = 38.66 years, 67% female) examined how anxiety sensitivity and experiential avoidance work together to explain the relation between perfectionism and anxious and depressive symptoms over 2 years. Participants completed measures of self-critical (SC) and personal standards (PS) higher-order dimensions of perfectionism, anxiety sensitivity, experiential avoidance, and anxious and depressive symptoms at Time 1. Participants completed measures of anxiety sensitivity, experiential avoidance, and symptoms again at Time 2 one year later, and symptoms measures again at Time 3 two years after baseline. Moderated mediation analyses showed that for those with higher Time 1 experiential avoidance, Time 1 SC perfectionism was indirectly related to Time 3 anxious arousal symptoms through Time 2 anxiety sensitivity. For those with moderate to higher Time 1 anxiety sensitivity, Time 1 SC perfectionism was indirectly associated with Time 3 general distress and anxious arousal symptoms through Time 2 experiential avoidance. These moderated mediation effects were not found for PS perfectionism. These results support anxiety sensitivity and experiential avoidance as moderating and mediating processes that may be important treatment targets for reducing vulnerability to anxious and depressive symptoms over the longer-term in SC perfectionistic individuals., (Copyright © 2024. Meaning-centered psychotherapy (MCP) has been found to be effective in improving meaning in life and increasing fulfillment in participants with cancer. However, to date, no previous studies have compared MCP with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The aim of this study was to analyze the differential efficacy of MCP, compared to CBT, in participants with cancer. The study is a randomized controlled trial with 76 participants, n = 41 (MCP) and n = 35 (CBT). At posttreatment, the MCP intervention for cancer survivors was more effective than CBT in increasing the presence of meaning in life, purpose and meaning in life, and life goals. Moreover, our results showed that, at posttreatment and the 6-month follow-up, MCP and CBT were similarly effective in improving depression and developing posttraumatic growth. This study suggests that MCP could be more effective than CBT in improving meaning in life, purpose, and life goals, and equally effective as CBT in improving depression and posttraumatic growth, in cancer survivors., (Copyright © 2024. Emotion dysregulation is a central process implicated in the genesis and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, past research on OCD has examined emotion regulation with a trait-level approach, thereby neglecting important situational and temporal dynamics. The present study is the first one to examine moment-to-moment emotion regulation in individuals with OCD. A 6-day ecological momentary assessment was used to assess affect, emotion regulation strategies, perceived effectiveness of emotion regulation strategies, and acceptance of emotional experiences in n = 72 individuals with OCD and n = 54 psychologically healthy controls. As expected, individuals with OCD reported more negative and less positive affect. Group differences in positive (but not negative) affect did remain significant when controlling for baseline depression. Furthermore, the OCD group reported to use a higher momentary number of avoidance-oriented regulation strategies and less perceived effectiveness of emotion regulation, even when controlling for current symptoms and negative affect or baseline depression scores. Further, irrespective of group, more momentary negative affect amplified use of avoidance-oriented strategies and diminished perceived effectiveness and emotional acceptance. Contrary to expectations, these effects were not more pronounced in the OCD group. Successful emotion regulation is a critical component of mental health, and difficulties with emotion regulation have been associated with a wide range of disorders, including anxiety and depressive disorders. However, although much is known about commonly used forms of emotion regulation such as cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, the relative contribution of two important facets of emotion regulation-frequency and self-efficacy-is not yet clearly established. To address this issue, we conducted two studies. Study 1 employed a community sample (cross-sectional N = 431; 4- to 5-month longitudinal N = 182). Study 2 employed a clinical sample (cross-sectional N = 132). Both assessed emotion regulation frequency and self-efficacy, as well as affective outcomes (anxiety and depressive symptoms). Findings indicated cognitive reappraisal self-efficacy appears to be a relevant variable understanding negative affect outcomes, cross-sectionally, longitudinally and in the clinical sample. Pain, substance use, and mental health conditions are common among people living with HIV (PLWH), and avoidance and rumination may influence the co-occurrence of these conditions. The present study examined longitudinal associations between avoidance/rumination and pain outcomes, anxiety, anger, and substance use among PLWH. Participants (N = 187) with chronic pain and depressive symptoms completed self-report assessments over a 1-year period. Greater avoidance/rumination was positively associated with mental health outcomes (anxiety, anger), pain interference, and alcohol use across participants after controlling for depression severity. At time points with greater avoidance/rumination than average, participants also reported increased pain severity and interference, anxiety and anger symptoms, and alcohol use. No associations were found between avoidance/rumination and cannabis use. Results suggest a mechanistic effect of avoidance/rumination, such that increases in avoidance/rumination correspond with poorer health outcomes among PLWH over time. Targeting avoidance/rumination through intervention approaches may be beneficial for addressing comorbid health conditions among PLWH. Additional research is necessary to investigate this possibility and further characterize the effects of avoidance/rumination on health outcomes for PLWH., (Copyright © 2024. The increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has placed a significant emotional and psychological burden on mothers. We explored the association between the severity of ASD symptoms in children and the mental health of their mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study included 1,924 mothers of children with ASD, enrolled in a web-based cross-sectional survey over 85 consecutive days to gather clinical and sociodemographic data. The severity of ASD symptoms was obtained according to the children's age. Using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS-21) scale, we found that 35.8 percent of mothers experienced both anxiety and depression. A high education level and a high family income reduced the chance of concurrent anxiety and depression. Conversely, unemployment, a child using psychiatric medication, and higher severity of ASD symptoms increased the chance. Notably, the severity of the ASD symptom was the sole predictor of maternal co-occurring anxiety and depression across all age groups (<3 years aOR = 2.04, 95%CI 1.07-3.89; 3-5 years aOR = 2.76, 95%CI 1.67-4.56; ≥ 6 years aOR = 1.61, 95%CI 1.04-2.50). Recognizing the challenges associated with ASD leads to greater acceptance and tailored interventions, ultimately improving the overall well-being of both individuals with ASD and their mothers.

Objective: To investigate the impact of migraine on the tinnitus-specific health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and psychiatric comorbidities in patients with tinnitus., Methods: This cross-sectional study included 227 consecutive patients with tinnitus as their primary complaint. Patients who were diagnosed as having comorbid migraine were asked whether their tinnitus exacerbated during attacks of migraine. All the patients completed three questionnaires: the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA) or its counterpart for the Elderly (HHIE), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)., Results: Among the 227 tinnitus patients, 60 (26.4%) had comorbid migraine. There were no significant differences in the THI or HHIA/HHIE scores between patients with migraine and those without migraine (both p > 0.05). The HADS score was significantly higher in patients with migraine than those without migraine (p < 0.05).Out of the 60 tinnitus patients with comorbid migraine, 27 (45.0%) experienced exacerbation of tinnitus during migraine attacks. Patients whose tinnitus exacerbated during migraine attacks had significantly higher scores in THI, HHIA/HHIE, and HADS compared to those whose tinnitus did not change during migraine attacks (p < 0.05 for THI and HADS, p < 0.01 for HHIA/HHIE)., Conclusion: The presence of migraine did not affect the tinnitus-specific HRQOL in tinnitus patients but had significant impacts on their psychiatric comorbidities. College students are at a heightened risk of experiencing depression and anxiety symptomatology and engaging in maladaptive alcohol use. Understanding how alcohol interventions impact emotional functioning is essential. One such intervention uses Deviance Regulation Theory (DRT), which posits that behavior can be modified using targeted messaging as a function of perceived norms. DRT has been shown to be effective at increasing responsible drinking behaviors and decreasing alcohol-related consequences. However, it is unclear if this intervention influences emotional functioning. The current examines the impact of a DRT intervention on emotional functioning. Participants ( n  = 147) were recruited from a large Southeastern university. The study included a screening phase, intervention, and six-week follow-up. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a positive message condition about people who drink responsibly, a negative message condition about people who do not drink responsibly, and an active control condition. During the study, all participants reported on depression/anxiety symptoms, alcohol use, responsible drinking, and alcohol-related consequences. Mixed-effects regression was used to analyze the data. Results suggest an overall reduction of depressive and anxiety symptomatology in the intervention conditions but not in the control condition. In the positive condition, there was a decrease in depressive and anxiety symptomatology. The messaging was not moderated by normative beliefs. The negative condition also led to decreases in depression and anxiety symptomatology over time. In addition, perceived norms moderated the negative message in the first week after the intervention, an effect consistent with DRT. Objective: To investigate the therapeutic utility of psychological nursing interventions for prostatic hyperplasia clients while they are receiving therapy., Methods: Clinical data of 110 patients with prostate group hyperplasia who underwent treatment in our hospital were collected and analysed retrospectively, and the selected period was from October 2021 to October 2023. The 110 cases of prostate group hyperplasia patients were divided into a research group and a control group according to the different methods of care, and each group had 55 cases each. The research group received psychological nursing intervention based on the conventional nursing care given to the control group. The total treatment compliance rate and contentment with nursing were contrasted between the research and control groups, and changes in the Self Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) score, Self Rating Depression Scale (SDS) score, Health Survey Short Form score, and sleep problems were observed between the research group and the control group., Results: The research group's overall compliance rate was 94.55% (52/53), a substantial increase over the control group's rate, 69.09% (38/55), P < 0.01. Following nursing, the research group's SAS and SDS scores were considerably more reduced than those of the control group, and both groups' scores were substantially lower than they were prior to nursing (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: This retrospective study found that psychological nursing intervention applied to patients with prostatic hyperplasia can effectively improve the patient's compliance with treatment, effectively reduce the occurrence of negative emotions, improve the patient's quality of life, and improve sleep problems. Background: Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) often demonstrate stress, distress, anxiety, depression, and are at risk for suicide. These affect their quality of life (QoL) but less attention has been given to psychological variables that may impact response to treatment., Objectives: This study aims to systematically review publications during 2013-2023 to collate evidence on the effects of psychological variables on HNC treatment outcomes., Methods: We searched Ovid Medline, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for articles that examined psychological factors related to treatment outcomes in patients with HNC., Results: There were 29 studies (5 before treatment, 2 during, 17 after, and 5 covering the whole management trajectory) including 362,766 patients. The psychological factors were either behavioral (adjustment and coping strategy, unrealistic ideas, self-blame), cognitive (elevated risk of psychiatric co-comorbidity), or emotional (distress, depression, anxiety, nervousness, and fear of disfigurement and complications). It was found that there was a relationship between depression and decreased survival in patients with HNC. Pretreatment pain was an independent predictor of decreased survival in a large sample of patients. The distress level was approximately  54%, emotional problems ranged between 10 and 44%, while financial difficulties were identified in 54% of the patients. Sixty-nine percent of patients were reported to have used at least one cost-coping strategy within 6 months after treatment initiation. During post-treatment period, depression increased from 15% at the baseline to 29%, while the fear of recurrence was found among at least 35% of patients., Discussion and Conclusion: Several psychological factors predict QoL and survival among HNC survivors. Distress encompasses depression and anxiety, and physical burden from HNC diagnosis and treatment. Routine screening and early interventions that target distress could improve HNC survivors' QoL. The present study aimed to find out differences of social support, perceived emotion invalidation, psychological needs, and use of adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies in maritally adjusted and maladjusted after controlling for age, education, employment status, and depressive symptomatology. The cross-sectional study uses a matched pairs design. The sample was divided into two groups; maritally adjusted and maladjusted women (n = 40 pairs) on basis of scores obtained on revised-dyadic adjustment scale. Forty maritally adjusted women were matched with 40 maritally maladjusted women according to age, education, and employment status. Social support questionnaire, perceived invalidation of emotion scale, basic psychological need satisfaction frustration scale, cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire, and center for epidemiologic studies depression scale were administered. One-way ANCOVA revealed that maritally maladjusted women had lower level of social support [mean difference; -5.65(-9.97, -1.33), p < 0.05, partial η 2  = 0.08] and more emotional invalidation [mean difference; 15.36(13.08, 17.65), p < 0.001, partial η 2  = 0.71] compared to maritally adjusted women after controlling for the effect of depressive symptomatology. Maritally maladjusted women had more need frustration [mean difference; 10.75(7.59, 13.92), p < 0.001, partial η 2  = 0.38] compared to maritally adjusted women. However, maritally adjusted women had more need satisfaction [mean difference; 13.36(9.67, 17.05), p < 0.001, partial η 2  = 0.41] compared to maritally maladjusted women. Maritally adjusted women used more adaptive CER strategies (acceptance, refocus on planning and putting into perspective) [mean difference; 4.66(2.36, 6.95), p < 0.001, partial η 2  = 0.18] compared to maritally maladjusted women whereas, maritally maladjusted women used more maladaptive strategies (self-blame, catastrophizing and blaming others) [mean difference; 4.66(2.77, 6.54), p < 0.001, partial η 2  = 0.25] compared to maritally adjusted women. Maladjusted women had less social support and more emotional invalidation of emotions and psychological needs frustration. They used more maladaptive strategies to manage their negative emotions in comparison to maritally adjusted women. Identification of these cognitive emotion regulation strategies will help clinicians and counselors to devise psychological intervention targeting the use of adaptive strategies to minimize the negative mental health consequences., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Introduction: The growth of surgeon burnout is of significant concern. As we work to reimagine the practice of surgery, an accurate understanding of the extent of surgeon burnout is essential. Our goal was to define the current prevalence of burnout and quality of life (QOL) among SAGES surgeons., Methodology: An electronic survey was administered to SAGES members to establish a current baseline for QOL, burnout, depression, and career satisfaction. To assess outcomes, we utilized the validated Maslach Burnout Inventory for Medical Personnel, the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form, and the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders. All scoring followed validated norm-based methods., Results: Of 4194 active members, 604 responded (14.40%). 69% met burnout threshold, with high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment. 81% reported "being at the end of their rope", 74% felt emotionally drained, and 65% felt used up daily. Nearly all maintained caring about what happened to their patients (96%), easily understanding how their patients feel (84.3%) and being capable of dealing effectively with their patient's problems (87.6%). However, respondents never, rarely, or occasionally felt energetic (77.5%) or experienced a sense of professional accomplishment (57.8%). The overall QOL score was 69/100, with lower Mental than Physical scores (62.69 (SD 10.20) vs.77.27 (SD 22.24)). More than half of respondents met depression criteria. While 77% supported they would become a physician again, less than half would choose surgery again or recommend surgery to their children. Furthermore, less than a third felt work allowed sufficient time for their personal lives., Conclusions: Participating SAGES surgeons reported alarmingly high rates of burnout and depression. Despite experiencing emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, they maintained a strong commitment to patient care. These findings likely reflect the broader state of surgeons, underscoring the urgent need for action to address this critical issue., (© 2024.
