The first part offers a description of transcendence and a discussion of its fate in modern philosophy. The second and major part presents the theme of the Incarnation as it appears in Žizek's recent work. His critique of the sacrificial interpretation of Christ's death on the cross, his alternative reading of this event, his view on the difference between the Jewish and the Christian understanding of God, his concept of 'the Divine', and his interpretation of both the Incarnation and the Crucifixion are discussed. The second part concludes with a concise comparison between Žizek and Rene Girard. In the third and final part, Žizek's claim that God's transcendence ends with the Incarnation is then re-evaluated. This paper traces the origins of the phrase 'God is dead!' back to Hegel and Luther. It proceeds in the following four steps: Section I investigates the appearance of the theme of God's death in Lutheran theology. Section II elaborates on Hegel's adaptation of this theme in the context of his early work Faith & Knowledge. In section III, the paper continues on how the theme of the death of God developed from Luther to Nietzsche via Hegel, before concluding, in section IV, by indicating the link between Protestantism and modern atheism.

This paper investigates René Girard's contribution to the theological debate on the meaning of the cross. The first section sets the scene and formulates the problem of the cross. It does this by introducing the problems connected to the dominant interpretation of the cross, the so-called ‘Anselmian’ model, which understands the cross in terms of satisfaction and substitution. The second section explores the interpretation of the cross before Anselm. It examines the so-called Christus Victor motif. The merits and shortcomings of this motif are explored and the question is raised of whether Christus Victor can answer the problem of the cross for today's world. The final and largest section of this paper rehabilitates the Christus Victor motif with the help of Girard. In this way, the paper shows that Girard fits into contemporary theological debates and that he matters for theology because his anthropological insights contribute to solving intra-theological problems, like the problem of the cross.
