Identifying the prevalence and risk factors of secondary human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission from people living with HIV (PLWH) to other people is crucial for ending the HIV epidemic. However, the data among antiretroviral therapy (ART) patients is limited. This study aims to assess the prevalence and risk factors of secondary HIV transmission among PLWH receiving ART by longitudinal molecular networks in China. In this study, the prevalence of secondary HIV transmission was 10.8%. The R0 was greater than 1 from 2017 to 2021 and peaked in 2019. PLWHs who were male sex, older age, engaged in condomless sex, experienced higher ART follow-up viral load, experienced ART medical omissions, infected with non-CRF01_AE subtype, and self-reported sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at HIV diagnosis increased the risk of secondary HIV transmission. However, those participants with higher education were less likely to be involved in secondary HIV transmission. The diagnostic age of the participants was nonlinearly associated with the risk of secondary HIV transmission, with a cutoff value of 43.13 years indicating a higher risk of secondary HIV transmission for patients diagnosed at or above this age. This study revealed substantial secondary HIV transmission and persistent HIV expansion among local PLWH, highlighting the necessity of enhancing viral load monitor, promoting adherence to ART, and promoting safe sex practices, particularly among older adults with HIV, to mitigate secondary HIV transmission.

Abstract Background Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are the leading causes of death and disability. Loneliness is linked to a greater risk of chronic disease. However, the lack of loneliness may change this relationship. Methods The 4th Survey of the Aged Population in Urban and Rural China (SSAPUR) was performed. 222,179 people over 60 years old were recruited. Chronic disease was defined by self-reported tumble incidents using the fourth SSAPUR questionnaire. We found that the residuals were well normally distributed. Subsequently, we analyzed the association between each studied factor and chronic disease by univariate logistic regression analysis. AimTo examine the prevalence and potential risk factors of multimorbidity among older adult in China. In addition, we investigated the pattern of multimorbidity.MethodsThis study is based on data from the fourth Sample Survey of the Aged Population in Urban and Rural China (SSAPUR) in 2015, a comprehensive survey of individuals aged 60 years or older in China. We calculated baseline data and prevalence rates for comorbidities, stratified by household registration, age, sex, education, exercise, and health insurance. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify potential risk factors for comorbidities. Furthermore, we determined the prevalence rates for the three most frequent disease combinations.ResultsA total of 215,040 participants were included in our analysis. Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common hereditary cardiomyopathy. Mavacamten, a first-in-class cardiac myosin inhibitor, is considered to be a specific drug for the treatment of HCM. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of mavacamten in patients with HCM. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and Clinical Trials.gov databases were searched from inception to February 6, 2024 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which compared the efficacy and safety between mavacamten and placebo in treating HCM. Results: Six RCTs involving 732 patients were included in this meta-analysis. This meta-analysis showed that mavacamten improved the New York Heart Association (NYHA) function class [risk ratios (RR): 2.21, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.48 to 3.30, p = 0.00001], Clinical Summary Score of the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ-CSS) scores [mean difference (MD): 9.33, 95% CI: 7.09 to 11.57, p < 0.00001] and composite functional end point (RR: 1.86, 95% CI: 1.25 to 2.78, p = 0.002). Meanwhile, mavacamten decreased N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) (MD: –492.28, 95% CI: –611.55 to –373.02, p < 0.00001), cardiac troponin I (cTnI) (MD: –14.58, 95% CI: –26.98 to –2.17, p = 0.02) and Valsalva left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) gradient (MD: –57.96, 95% CI: –82.15 to –33.78, p < 0.00001). The results for the incidence of ≥1 total emergent adverse event (TEAE) and ≥1 serious adverse event (SAE) showed that there was no significant difference between both groups (RR: 1.9, 95% CI: 0.97 to 1.24, p = 0.16) (RR: 1.06, 95% CI: 0.46 to 2.44, p = 0.90). Conclusions: Mavacamten has great efficacy for the treatment of HCM. Meanwhile, mavacamten did not increase the incidence of adverse events or serious adverse events.

Abstract Background Social frailty has not been comprehensively studied in China. Our objective is to investigate the prevalence of social frailty among the older population in China, as well as identify relevant factors and urban-rural differences. Methods We obtained data from the Fourth Sample Survey of the Aged Population in Urban and Rural China (SSAPUR) database. The study employed a multistage, stratified, cluster-sampling method, recruiting a total of 224,142 adults aged 60 years or older. Participants were interviewed to gather demographic data and information on family, health and medical conditions, health care service status, living environment conditions, social participation, protected rights status, spiritual and cultural life, and health. Social frailty was assessed using the HALFE Social Frailty Index. A score of three or above indicated social frailty. Results We analyzed a total of 222,179 cases, and the overall prevalence of social frailty was found to be 15.2%. The highest prevalence was observed among participants aged 75–79 years (18.0%). BackgroundAdverse psychosocial factors play an important role in cardio-cerebral vascular disease (CCVD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the cumulative burden of loneliness on the risk of CCVD in the Chinese older adult.MethodsA total of 6,181 Chinese older adult over the age of 62 in the monitoring survey of the fourth Sample Survey of the Aged Population in Urban and Rural China (SSAPUR) were included in this study. The loneliness cumulative burden (scored by cumulative degree) was weighted by the loneliness score for two consecutive years (2017–2018) and divided into low- and high-burden groups. The outcome was defined as the incidence of CCVD 1 year later (2018–2019). A multivariate logistic regression model was used to examine the relationship between the cumulative burden of loneliness and the new onset of CCVD.ResultsAmong participants, 18.9% had a higher cumulative burden of loneliness, and 11.5% had a CCVD incidence within 1 year. After multivariate adjustment, the risk of developing CCVD in the high-burden group was approximately 37% higher than that in the low-burden group (OR 1.373, 95%CI 1.096–1.721; p = 0.006). Similar results were obtained when calculating the burden based on cumulative time. Longitudinal change in loneliness was not significantly associated with an increased risk of CCVD. A higher cumulative burden of loneliness may predict a higher risk of developing CCVD in older adult individuals aged 62–72 years or in those with diabetes.ConclusionThe cumulative burden of loneliness can be used to assess the risk of new-onset CCVD in the older adult in the short term.

We conducted environmental surveillance to detect avian influenza viruses circulating at live poultry markets (LPMs) and poultry farms in Guangxi Autonomous Region, China, where near the China-Vietnam border. From November through April 2017–2018 and 2018–2019, we collected environmental samples from 14 LPMs, 4 poultry farms, and 5 households with backyard poultry in two counties of Guangxi and tested for avian influenza A, H5, H7, and H9 by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). In addition, we conducted four cross-sectional questionnaire surveys among stall owners on biosecurity practices in LPMs of two study sites. Among 16,713 environmental specimens collected and tested, the median weekly positive rate for avian influenza A was 53.6% (range = 33.5% − 66.0%), including 25.2% for H9, 4.9% for H5, and 21.2% for other avian influenza viruses A subtypes, whereas a total of two H7 positive samples were detected. Among the 189 LPM stalls investigated, most stall owners (73.0%) sold chickens and ducks. Therefore, continued surveillance of the avian influenza virus is necessary for detecting and responding to emerging trends in avian influenza virus epidemiology.

Although the electroencephalography (EEG) based brain–computer interface (BCI) has been successfully developed for rehabilitation and assistance, it is still challenging to achieve continuous control of a brain-actuated mobile robot system. In this study, we propose a continuous shared control strategy combining continuous BCI and autonomous navigation for a mobile robot system. The weight of shared control is designed to dynamically adjust the fusion of continuous BCI control and autonomous navigation. During this process, the system uses the visual-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) method to construct environmental maps. After obtaining the global optimal path, the system utilizes the brain-based shared control dynamic window approach (BSC-DWA) to evaluate safe and reachable trajectories while considering shared control velocity. Eight subjects participated in two-stage training, and six of these eight subjects participated in online shared control experiments. The training results demonstrated that naïve subjects could achieve continuous control performance with an average percent valid correct rate of approximately 97 % and an average total correct rate of over 80 %. The results of online shared control experiments showed that all of the subjects could complete navigation tasks in an unknown corridor with continuous shared control. Therefore, our experiments verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system combining continuous BCI, shared control, autonomous navigation, and visual SLAM. The proposed continuous shared control framework shows great promise in BCI-driven tasks, especially navigation tasks for brain-driven assistive mobile robots and wheelchairs in daily applications.

Background Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) has been shown to exacerbate atherosclerosis, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Adipose tissue is an energy storage organ and the largest endocrine organ in the human body, playing a key role in the development of cardiovascular disease. In this research, it was hypothesized that CUMS may exacerbate the development of atherosclerosis by inducing the hypertrophy and dysfunction of white adipocytes. Methods The CUMS-induced atherosclerosis model was developed in Western diet-fed apolipoprotein E (ApoE)-/- mice. White adipose tissue (WAT), serum, aortic root, and the brachiocephalic trunk were collected and tested after 12 weeks of CUMS development. The mouse model of CUMS was evaluated for depression-like behavior using the open field test (OFT) and the elevated plus maze (EPM) test. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was conducted to detect serum noradrenaline and urine adrenaline protein levels. Serological assays were used to detect serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), and free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and oil red O were used to detect atherosclerotic plaque area, lipid deposition, and adipocyte size. The mRNA levels of genes related to aberrant adipose tissue function were determined using real-time PCR. Immunofluorescence assay and western blotting were conducted to examine the expression of proteins in the adipose tissue samples. Results CUMS aggravated vascular atherosclerotic lesions in ApoE-/- mice. It decreased body weight while increasing the percentage of WAT. The serological results indicated that the concentration of HDL decreased in CUMS mice. Notably, adipocyte hypertrophy increased, whereas the mRNA levels of Pparg and its target genes (Slc2a4 (encodes for GLUT4), Adipoq, and Plin1) decreased. Further investigation revealed that CUMS increased subcutaneous inguinal WAT (iWAT) lipid synthesis and adipocyte inflammation while decreasing lipid hydrolysis and the expression of HDL-associated protein ApoA-I. Moreover, CUMS aggravated insulin resistance in mice and inhibited the insulin pathway in iWAT. Conclusions These findings indicated that CUMS induces adipose tissue dysfunction via a mechanism that leads to dyslipidemia, increased inflammation, and insulin resistance in the body, thereby exacerbating atherosclerosis. Notably, CUMS that is involved in decreasing the expression of HDL-associated proteins in adipose tissue may be a crucial link between adipose hypertrophy and advanced atherosclerosis. This study reveals a novel mechanism via which CUMS exacerbates atherosclerosis from the novel perspective of abnormal adipose function and identifies a novel potential therapeutic target for this disease.

The treadmill exercise test (TET) serves as a non-invasive method for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD). Despite its widespread use, TET reports are susceptible to external influences, heightening the risk of misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. In this paper, we propose a novel automatic CAD diagnosis approach. The proposed approach introduces a customized preprocessing method to obtain clear electrocardiograms (ECGs) from individual TET reports. Additionally, it presents TETDiaNet, a novel neural network designed to explore the temporal relationships within TET ECGs. Central to TETDiaNet is the TETDia block, which mimics clinicians’ diagnostic processes to extract essential diagnostic information. This block encompasses an intra-state contextual learning module and an inter-state contextual learning module, modeling the temporal relationships within a single state and between states, respectively. These two modules help the TETDia block to capture effective diagnosis information by exploring the temporal relationships within TET ECGs. Furthermore, we establish a new TET dataset named TET4CAD for CAD diagnosis. It contains simplified TET reports for 192 CAD patients and 224 non-CAD patients, and each patient undergoes coronary angiography for labeling. Experimental results on TET4CAD underscore the superior performance of the proposed approach, highlighting the discriminative value of the temporal relationships within TET ECGs for CAD diagnosis.

Background Chronic stress promotes the development of atherosclerosis, causing disruptions in the body’s hormone levels and changes in the structural function of organs. Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the pathological changes in the adrenal gland in a model of atherosclerosis under chronic stress and to verify the expression levels of Sodium-glucose cotransporter (SGLT) 1 and SGLT2 in the adrenal gland and their significance in the changes of adrenal gland. Methods The model mice were constructed by chronic unpredictable stress, high-fat diet, and Apoe-/- knockout, and they were tested behaviorally at 0, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. The state of the abdominal artery was examined by ultrasound, and the pathological changes of the aorta and adrenal glands were observed by histological methods, and the expression levels and distribution of SGLT1 and SGLT2 in the adrenal gland were observed and analyzed by immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry. The predictive value of SGLT1 and SGLT2 expression levels on intima-media thickness, internal diameter and adrenal abnormalities were verified by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, support vector machine (SVM) and back-propagation (BP) neural network. Results The results showed that chronic stress mice had elevated expression levels of SGLT1 and SGLT2. The model mice developed thickening intima-media and smaller internal diameter in the aorta, and edema, reticular fiber rupture, increased adrenal glycogen content in the adrenal glands. More importantly, analysis of ROC, SVM and BP showed that SGLT1 and SGLT2 expression levels in the adrenal glands could predict the above changes in the aorta and were also sensitive and specific predictors of adrenal abnormalities. Conclusion SGLT1 and SGLT2 could be potential biomarkers of adrenal injury in atherosclerosis under chronic stress.

Abstract Objective This study investigated prevalence trends and identified the associated factors of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C virus (HCV) among pregnant women in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Guangxi), Southwest China. Methods Serial cross-sectional surveys were performed annually among pregnant women in Guangxi from 2009 to 2018. Blood specimens were collected to test the prevalence of HIV, syphilis and HCV. Cochran–Armitage analysis was used to assess the trends of HIV, syphilis and HCV prevalence, as well as the sociodemographic and behavioural data. In this study, we used zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regression models to identify factors associated with HIV, syphilis and HCV infection. Results A total of 23,879 pregnant women were included in the study. The prevalence of HIV, syphilis and HCV was 0.24%, 0.85% and 0.19%, respectively. There was a decrease in HIV prevalence from 0.54% to 0.10%, a decrease in HCV prevalence from 0.40% to 0.05% and a decrease in syphilis prevalence from 1.53% to 0.30%. The findings based on the ZINB model revealed that pregnant women who had a history of STI had significantly increased risks of HIV (OR 6.63; 95% CI 1.33–32.90) and syphilis (OR 9.06; 95% CI 3.85–21.30) infection, while pregnant women who were unmarried/widowed/divorced were more likely to have HIV (OR 2.81; 95% CI 1.20–6.54) and HCV (OR 58.12; 95% CI, 3.14–1076.99) infection. Furthermore, pregnant women whose husband had a history of STI (OR 5.62; 95% CI 1.24–25.38) or drug use (OR 7.36; 95% CI 1.25–43.43) showed an increased risk of HIV infection. Conclusions There was a relatively low prevalence of HIV, syphilis and HCV among pregnant women. Although decreasing trends in HIV, syphilis and HCV infections were observed, effort is needed to promote STI testing in both premarital medical check-ups and antenatal care, especially targeting couples with a history of STI or drug use.

Abstract Background HIV testing is a primary prevention strategy against the HIV epidemic and an entry point for HIV/AIDS-related care, prevention and treatment. This study aimed to estimate the uptake of HIV testing among Sino-Vietnam female sex workers (FSWs) in Guangxi, China, from 2016 to 2018, and to identify the factors influencing HIV testing uptake. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among FSWs in two Sino-Vietnam border cities of Guangxi, China. The survey was conducted through face-to-face interview, the data were collected by a structured questionnaire, and HIV-1 infection was detected simultaneously. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors associated with uptake of HIV testing. Results In total, 4565 Chinese local FSWs (CL-FSWs) and 636 cross-border migrant Vietnamese FSWs (CMV-FSWs) were recruited into this study. HIV-1 prevalence in CL-FSWs and CMV-FSWs was 0.70% and 3.14%, respectively. The rate of self-reported uptake of HIV testing in CL-FSWs and CMV-FSWs was 54.56% and 45.44%, respectively. The rates of self-reported uptake of HIV testing declined in both groups from 2016 to 2018. BackgroundSocial frailty is one type of frailty. Physical frailty with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (CCVD) have been studied a lot, but less research on social frailty.ObjectivesTo study the prevalence, related risk factors and regional differences of social frailty with CCVD in Chinese older adults.MethodsSSAPUR was a national cross-sectional survey. Participants aged 60 years or older were recruited in August 2015. Demographic data and information regarding family, health and medical conditions, living environment conditions, social participation, spiritual and cultural life, and health condition were obtained. Social frailty was assessed in five areas (HALFE Social Frailty Index) including inability to help others, limited social participation, loneliness, financial difficulty, and living alone. The prevalence of CCVD with social frailty, related risk factors and regional differences in CCVD with social frailty were studied.ResultsA total of 222,179 participants were enrolled. 28.4% of them had CCVD history. The prevalence of social frailty in the CCVD group was 16.03%. In CCVD participants, compared with the group without social frailty, there were significant differences in gender, age, urban–rural distribution, ethnicity, marital status, and education levels in the social frailty group. Significant differences were also found in physical exercise participation, health status, cataract, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hospitalization within 1 year, self-assessed health status, crutch or wheelchair usage, urinary and fecal incontinence, need for care from others, fall history, housing satisfaction, and self-assessed happiness in the social frailty group. Women with CCVD had a higher prevalence of social frailty than men. By age in CCVD with social frailty, the highest prevalence was found in participants 75–79 years old. The prevalence of CCVD was significant difference between social frailty in urban and rural group. The prevalence of social frailty with CCVD was significantly different in different regions. The highest prevalence was 20.4% in southwest area, and the lowest prevalence was 12.5% in northeast with area.ConclusionThe prevalence of social frailty among the CCVD older adults is high. Factors such as gender, age, region, urban–rural residence, and the state of the disease may be associated with social frailty.

Abstract Background The 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) shows good performance in detecting depression among older persons, but its applicability has not been well studied in non-Western oldest-old adults and centenarians. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric property of the GDS-15 and a simplified version among a large representative longevous population in China. Methods A total of 1624 individuals (786 oldest-old persons aged from 80 to 99 years; 838 centenarians aged 100+ years) participated in this study. Home interviews with structured questionnaires were conducted to collect sociodemographic data. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Chinese GDS-15 version. We implemented mixed methods for the psychometric evaluation of the GDS-15. Cronbach’s α coefficient and item-total correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the internal consistency. A standard expert consultation was conducted to test the content validity of each item. Multiple factor analyses were used to explore the optimal factor structure and measurement invariance. Results The α coefficient of the GDS-15 was 0.745, while two items impaired the overall consistency reliability. Nineteen experts rated the applicability for each item and provided removal suggestion. Five items with less validity were removed, and a simplified 10-item GDS model with three-factor structure was proposed as an optimal solution. The GDS-10 model showed factorial equivalence across age, sex, residence, and education in multi-group confirmatory factor analyses. Conclusions The original GDS-15 has acceptable internal reliability, known-group validity, and concurrent validity among Chinese community-dwelling oldest-old and centenarians; however we provided preliminary evidence indicating that individual items related to somatic function or social activities may not be applicable for this population. The modified GDS-10 can be proposed as a potentially more practical and comprehensible instrument for depression screening.

AimTo evaluated the prevalence and potential risk factors of self-reported diabetes among the elderly in China, by demographic data, socioeconomic factors, and psychological factors.MethodsDescriptive analysis and Chi-square analysis were used to assess the prevalence and variation between self-reported diabetes and non-diabetes by demographic data, living habits, socioeconomic factors and comorbidities. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to describe the odds ratios (OR) of diabetes prevalence in different groups, while stratification analysis was performed to describe prevalence based on gender, age, and urban/rural areas.Results215,041 elderly adults (102,692 males and 112,349 females) were eventually included in the analysis. The prevalence of self-reported diabetes among the elderly in China is about 8.7%, with the highest prevalence in Beijing (20.8%) and the lowest prevalence in Xizang (0.9%). Logistic regression analysis showed that urban area (P < 0.001), older age (65–84 years old, P < 0.001), female (P < 0.001), higher income(P < 0.001), poor sleep quality (P = 0.01) and some other factors were potential risk factors for diabetes.ConclusionsThis study illustrates the prevalence and potential risk factors of diabetes among the elderly in China Meanwhile, these results provide information to assist the government in controlling non-communicable diseases in the elderly.

Abstract Since the COVID‐19 pandemic, physicians concerned about the potential adverse effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs)/angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). To explore the relationship between ACEIs/ARBs and the risk of mortality and other clinical outcomes in COVID‐19 patients, the authors conducted a systemic review and meta‐analysis. An electronic search was performed from inception to November 12, 2020 in PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials, TRIP, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, and CBM database. Risk of bias was assessed using the Risk Of Bias In Non‐randomized Studies of Interventions tool. The primary outcome was in‐hospital all‐cause mortality. Secondary outcomes included all‐cause mortality measured at 30‐day or longer term, mechanical ventilation, length of hospital stay, readmission, and cardiac adverse events. A total of 28 studies with 73 465 patients was included. Twenty‐two studies with 19 871 patients reported the incidence of all‐cause mortality. Results showed no association between using ACEIs/ARBs and risk of mortality crude odds ratio （OR） of 1.02, 95% CI 0.71–1.46, p = .90, I2 = 88%, adjusted OR in 6260 patients of 0.96, 95% CI 0.77–1.18, p = .68, I2 = 0%. While six studies with 10 030 patients reported a lower risk of mortality in ACEIs/ARBs group hazard ratio (HR) of 0.53, 95% CI 0.34–0.84, p = .007, I2 = 68%. Similar association (for HR) was found in hypertension subgroup. There was no significant association for the secondary outcomes. Based on the available data, we concluded that ACEIs/ARBs is not associated with the risk of in‐hospital all‐cause mortality in COVID‐19 patients, but may be associated with a decreased risk of 30‐day all‐cause mortality. Patients with hypertension may benefit from using ACEIs/ARBs.

BackgroundAging is an essential national condition throughout China in the 21st century. Cardio-cerebral vascular disease (CCVD) is a common chronic vascular disease in the elderly. Despite aging becoming an increasingly pressing issue, there has been no comprehensive national investigation into the risk factors, prevalence, and management of CCVD among the elderly population in China.Materials and methodsThrough the 4th Survey of the Aged Population in Urban and Rural China (SSAPUR), a nationally representative sample of 224,142 adults aged more than 60 years was surveyed using a multistage, stratified sampling method. The 4th SSAPUR was used to investigate CCVD in the elderly. Univariate and multivariate logistic proportional regression analyses explored the risk factors. These risk factors were then entered into a multivariate linear regression model to identify independent predictive factors for CCVD. Disease management was assessed from the self-reported history of physician diagnosis, treatments, and hospital visits among individuals with CCVD.ResultsAfter excluding samples with missing information, 215,041 individuals were included in the analysis. The overall prevalence of CCVD was 26%. Living in a rural area, being older, being female, having low literacy, smoking, getting little sleep, losing a spouse, being single, not getting enough exercise, having a bad financial situation, and not taking part in public welfare programs were the main risk factors for CCVD among the elderly in China (P < 0.05). In the multivariate linear regression model, holding all other variables at any fixed value, CCVD remained associated with “urban and rural” (β = 0.012, P < 0.001), “age” (β = −0.003, P < 0.001), “sex” (β = −0.022, P < 0.001), “education level” (β = −0.017, P < 0.001), “marriage” (β = 0.004, P = 0.047), “smoking” (β = 0.012, P = 0.003), “drinking” (β = −0.015, P = 0.001), and “sleep” (β = 0.008, P = 0.005). There were no collinearity problems among these factors.ConclusionMajor risk factors for prevalent CCVD among the elderly in China include the following: rural residence, female, low literacy level, poor sleep quality, bereavement, non-marriage, living alone, lack of exercise, poor financial situation, and non-participation in public welfare activities. Chinese national policies for preventing, controlling, and managing risk factors for CCVD in the elderly must be urgently developed.

Electromyography (EMG) generated by human hand movements is usually used to decode different action types with high accuracy. However, the classifications of the gestures rarely consider the impact of force, and the estimation of the grasp force when performing natural grasping movements is so far overlooked. Decoding natural grasping movements and estimating the force generated by the associated movements can help patients to improve the accuracy of prosthesis control. This study mainly focused on two aspects: the classification of four natural grasping movements and the force estimation of these actions. For this purpose, we designed an experimental platform where subjects could perform four common natural grasping movements in daily life, including pinch, palmar, twist, and plug grasp, to complete target profiles. On the one hand, the results showed that, for natural grasping movements with different levels of force (three levels at 20, 50, and 80%), the average accuracy could reach from 91.43 to 97.33% under five classification schemes. On the other hand, the feasibility of force estimation for natural grasping movements was demonstrated. Furthermore, in the process of force estimation, we confirmed that the regression performance about plug grasp was the best, and the average R2 could reach 0.9082. Besides, we found that the regression results were affected by the speed of force application. These findings contribute to the natural control of myoelectric prosthesis and the EMG-based rehabilitation training system, improving the user’s experience and acceptance.

ObjectiveTo investigate the prevalence of frailty and pre-frailty and its associated factors in Chinese older adults with diabetes through a nationwide cross-sectional study.Research design and methodsThe data were obtained from the Sample Survey of the Aged Population in Urban and Rural China (SSAPUR), conducted in 2015, which was a cross-sectional study involving a nationally representative sample of older adults aged 60 years or more from 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in mainland China. Subjects with diabetes were included in this study. Frailty index (FI), based on 33 potential deficits, was used to categorize individuals as robust, pre-frail, or frail.ResultsA total of 18,010 older adults with diabetes were included in this study. The weighted prevalence of frailty and pre-frailty in older adults with diabetes in China was 22.7% (95% CI 22.1–23.3%) and 58.5% (95% CI 57.8–59.2%), respectively. The prevalence of frailty and pre-frailty among older adults with diabetes from different provinces/municipalities/autonomous regions was significantly different. Multinomial logistic regression analysis showed living alone, poor economic status, ADL disability, and comorbidities were strongly correlated with frailty and pre-frailty in older adults with diabetes.ConclusionFrailty and pre-frailty are common in older adults with diabetes in China, and exhibit sociodemographic and geographic differences. In the clinical setting of older adults with diabetes, there is a need to increase awareness of frailty and to advance the early diagnosis and intervention of frailty.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the global research status, hot topics, and future prospects in the field of the hypoxia inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (HIF-PHI) by bibliometric analysis.Methods: The literatures about HIF-PHI were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection and Pubmed database from inceptions to January.10th. 2022. The VOSviewer 1.6.18 was used to explore the bibliometric networks and research priorities of HIF-PHI.Results: A total of 409 papers about HIF-PHI were included, involving 1,674 authors from 548 institutions in 43 countries. The number of HIF-PHI literatures showed an upward trend, with steady growth from 2016 to 2020 and rapid growth in 2021. Tadao Akizawa, Masaomi Nangaku and Alexander R Cobitz published the most literatures. The United States, Japan and China contributed the most publications. The three most contributed institutions are Astellas Pharma Inc., the Showa University and Glaxosmithkline. Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, American Journal of Nephrology and Clinical Pharmacology in Drug Development are the most productive journals. The main hot topics of HIF-PHI field are anemia, chronic kidney disease, hif-phi, epoetin and roxadustat.Conclusion: The United States and Japan are dominant in the field of HIF-PHI research. The discovery and clinical application of HIF-PHI is a great boon for patients with renal anemia. However, due to the short clinical application time of HIF-PHI, and its long-term efficacy and safety still need time to prove. In addition, more cooperation should be carried out between European and American countries and Asian countries to better prove the clinical value of HIF-PHI.

This paper presents an improved solution for the airflow energy harvester based on the push–pull diamagnetic levitation structure. A four-notch rotor is adopted to eliminate the offset of the floating rotor and substantially increase the energy conversion rate. The new rotor is a centrally symmetrical-shaped magnet, which ensures that it is not subjected to cyclically varying unbalanced radial forces, thus avoiding the rotor’s offset. Considering the output voltage and power of several types of rotors, the four-notch rotor was found to be optimal. Furthermore, with the four-notch rotor, the overall average increase in axial magnetic spring stiffness is 9.666% and the average increase in maximum monostable levitation space is 1.67%, but the horizontal recovery force is reduced by 3.97%. The experimental results show that at an airflow rate of 3000 sccm, the peak voltage and rotation speed of the four-notch rotor are 2.709 V and 21,367 rpm, respectively, which are 40.80% and 5.99% higher compared to the three-notch rotor. The experimental results were consistent with the analytical simulation. Based on the improvement, the energy conversion factor of the airflow energy harvester increased to 0.127 mV/rpm, the output power increased to 138.47 mW and the energy conversion rate increased to 58.14%, while the trend of the levitation characteristics also matched the simulation results. In summary, the solution proposed in this paper significantly improves the performance of the airflow energy harvester.

In order to compare the tooth root bending fatigue life of 18CrNiMo7-6 and 20CrMnTi gears，based on the fatigue characteristics of these two materials，the gear model is built by using the GearTrax plug-in in the 3D modeling software SolidWorks. Through the finite element analysis software Workbench， the statics analysis of the single tooth of the gear is performed，and then the static analysis result is introduced into the fatigue analysis software FE-SAFE，in combination with the load spectrum information， the fatigue life of the two gears are calculated，and the obtaining life cloud maps are analyzed and compared. The feasibility of the simulation method is verified by experiments. The results show that， under the same load conditions， the fatigue life of gears with 18CrNiMo7-6 is slightly greater than that with 20CrMnTi， it is close to the experimental results. The analysis results have a certain guiding role for engineering practice.

BackgroundCompared with conventional medicines, angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) could further improve the prognosis for multiple cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, hypertension, and myocardial infarction. However, the relationship between ARNI therapy and the recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) after radiofrequency catheter ablation is currently unknown.MethodsThis study is a retrospective cohort study. Patients with consecutive persistent or paroxysmal AF undergoing first-time radiofrequency ablation were enrolled from February 2018 to October 2021. We compared the risk of AF recurrence in patients with catheter ablation who received ARNI with the risk of AF recurrence in those who received the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI). The propensity-score matched analysis was conducted to examine the effectiveness of ARNI. We used a Cox regression model to evaluate AF recurrence events.ResultsAmong 679 eligible patients, 155 patients with ARNI treatment and 155 patients with ACEI treatment were included in the analyses. At a median follow-up of 228 (196–322) days, ARNI as compared with ACEI was associated with a lower risk of AF recurrence [adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 0.39; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.24–0.63; p < 0.001]. In addition, no interaction was found in the subgroup analysis.ConclusionAngiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor treatment was associated with a decreased risk of AF recurrence after first-time radiofrequency catheter ablation.

ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in patients with diabetes with cardiovascular disease (CVD) or at high cardiovascular risk.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).Data sourcesPubmed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrial.gov from their inception to August 28, 2021.Review methodsRandomized control trials (RCTs) assess the effects of SGLT2i in patients with diabetes with cardiovascular disease or at high cardiovascular risk. Primary outcomes included the composite outcome of cardiovascular death (CV death) and hospitalization for heart failure (HHF), HHF, and renal composite outcomes. Secondary outcomes included major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), CV death, all-cause mortality, and change from the baseline in HbA1c. Additionally, we assessed the effects of treatment in prespecified subgroups on the combined risk of primary and secondary outcomes. These subgroups were based on history of heart failure (HF), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels, and history of hypertension (HTN). A meta-analysis was carried out by using fixed effect models to calculate hazard ratio (HR) or mean difference (MD) between the SGLT2i administrated groups and the control groups.ResultsFour major studies (n = 42,568) were included. Primary outcomes showed that SGLT2i was associated with significantly lower risk of CV death/HHF (HR, 0.90; 95% confidence interval, 0.84 to 0.98; P for heterogeneity = 0.01), HHF (HR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.73 to 0.98; p = 0.02), and renal composite outcomes (HR, 0.83; 95%CI, 0.74 to 0.92; p = 0.0007) in patients with diabetes with CVD or at high CV risk. Secondary outcome showed that the use of SGLT2i was associated with significant reduction of the HbA1c level (MD, −0.30; 95% CI, −0.36 to −0.23; p < 0.00001). In subgroup analyses, SGLT2i significantly reduced the risk of renal composite outcomes in patients without history of HF (HR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.62 to 0.91; p = 0.003 < 0.025). No statistically significant differences were observed in other secondary outcomes and subgroup analyses.ConclusionsThe SGLT2i showed benefits on CV death/HHF, HHF, renal composite outcomes, and HbA1c reduction in patients with diabetes with CVD or at high CV risk. IntroductionParoxetine is a GRK2 inhibitor that has been widely used to treat depression and anxiety over the last few decades. The inhibition of GRK2 has been studied extensively in vivo; however, evidence of its impact on heart failure remains scarce.MethodsTo assess the association between paroxetine use and mortality in patients with heart failure. We conducted a retrospective longitudinal cohort study from 2008 to 2019, with a follow-up time of 28 days for all groups. This is a single-center study using the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database with 11,657 heart failure patients identified. We performed genetic matching to adjust for the covariates. Heart failure patients prescribed paroxetine for >24 h after hospital admission were categorized into the paroxetine group (77 patients), with remaining heart failure patients making up the matched control group (231 patients). The primary outcome was 28-day all-cause mortality from the date of hospital admission. Secondary outcomes included length of intensive care unit stay, length of hospital stay, and in-hospital mortality. The Kaplan–Meier survival estimator, logistic regression, Cox regression, and restricted mean survival time were used to detect the association between paroxetine therapy and outcomes.ResultsPatients who received paroxetine during one hospital admission lived, on average, 0.7 lesser days (95% CI −2.53 to 1.1, p = 0.46) than patients who did not use it in a 28-day truncation time point. Multivariable logistic regression, including all matched covariates, demonstrated that the adjusted odds ratio of 28-day mortality of the paroxetine administration group was 1.1 (95% CI 0.37–2.9, p = 0.90). Multivariable Cox regression of 28-day mortality presented an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.00 (95% CI 0.42–2.62, p = 0.92). Paroxetine was associated with an increased survival time at a 3,000-day truncation time point (203 days, 95% CI −305.69 to 817.8, p = 0.37).ConclusionsIn patients with heart failure, treatment with paroxetine did not significantly reduce 28-day all-cause mortality.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a global pandemic and lays an added burden on public healthcare. Previous studies indicated that high and low serum uric acid levels are associated with worse outcomes in many diseases. Reduced serum uric acid may not result in a better outcome.Methods: A comparative, matched cross-sectional study design was implemented. The matching variables were age, sex, BMI, BP, and histories of CKD, CVD, diabetes mellitus, stroke, hyperlipidemia. We reviewed the electronic medical records to identify patients diagnosed with hypertension or hypertensive heart failure (HHF) admitted to Beijing Hospital's cardiology department.Results: The median age of the two groups after matching are 71. There are 55.6% males in the hypertension group and 53.8% in the heart failure group. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that UA's quadratic term is significant (OR = 1.00, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.00; P = 0.03), which indicated a u-shaped relationship between hypertension and HHF. FBS (OR = 0.22, 95% CI 0.05 to 0.95, p = 0.07) and HDL (OR = 1.23, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.54, P = 0.05) were not significant but close.Conclusion: Our results supported that both low and high uric acid levels were predictive of hypertensive heart failure. Besides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and fasting blood sugar were also associated with hypertensive heart failure. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was not associated with hypertensive heart failure.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic brought about great transformation to medical education mode. Although mobile communication devices played a crucial role in online learning among quarantined university students, the potential smartphone addition problems, negative health behaviors, and psychological symptoms need considerable attention. This study examined the relationship of problematic smartphone use (PSU), sleep quality, and daytime fatigue among medical students.Methods: A web-based survey was conducted in six polyclinic hospitals in Beijing between February and May 2020. 1016 participants (26.01 ± 2.46 years, 65.16% female) completed self-report measurements including Short Version Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS-SV), Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), and Subjective Fatigue Scale (FS). Spearman correlation coefficients and multiple regression models were used to analyze the association among PSU, sleep quality, and daytime fatigue. We used structural equation modeling to test the mediating effect of sleep quality between PSU and daytime fatigue.Results: 49.70% of the participants had PSU. Significant positive correlations were found among SAS-SV, AIS, and FS scores (r = 0.35–0.61, PS < 0.001). Subjects with PSU were more likely to report sleep disturbance (β = 1.07, P < 0.001, OR = 2.91, 95%CI = 2.17–3.91), physical fatigue (β = 1.16, P < 0.001, OR = 3.18, 95%CI = 2.45–4.15), and mental fatigue (β = 0.88, P < 0.001, OR = 2.42, 95%CI = 1.86–3.14). The indirect effect of PSU on physical fatigue and mental fatigue mediated by sleep quality accounted for 50.03 and 45.43% of the total effect, respectively.Conclusions: PSU was significantly associated with sleep disturbance and fatigue among medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sleep quality mediated the relationship between PSU and daytime fatigue. Our results provide valuable information for maintaining medical students' health status and constructing online education structures.

Abstract Objectives For migrant female sex workers (FSWs) at the Sino-Vietnamese border, the impact of work time in their current location on the spread of HIV/AIDS is not clear. Methods Data were collected from the Sino-Vietnamese border cities of Guangxi, China. Migrant FSWs working in these cities were studied. FSWs who worked less than 6 months in their current location were assigned to the short-term work group (ST FSWs), and FSWs who worked equal to or longer than 6 months in their current location were assigned to the long-term work group (LT FSWs). Logistic regression was performed to examine the impact of work time in the current location and factors associated with HIV infection. Results Among the 1667 migrant FSWs, 586 (35.2%) and 1081 (64.9%) were assigned to the ST FSW and LT FSW groups, respectively. Compared to LT FSWs, ST FSWs were more likely to be of Vietnamese nationality, be less than 18 years old when they first engaged in commercial sex work, and have a low-level of HIV-related knowledge and had higher odds of using condoms inconsistently, having more male clients, having no regular male clients, and having a history of male clients who used aphrodisiacs but lower odds of receiving free condoms distribution and education/HIV counselling and testing programme. The analysis of factors associated with HIV infection revealed that Vietnamese FSWs, less than 18 years old when they first engaged in commercial sex work, having no regular male clients, and having lower average charge per sex transaction were correlated with HIV infection. Conclusion FSWs with short-term work at the Sino-Vietnamese border had a higher risk of risky sex and were correlated with HIV risk factors. Vietnamese FSWs were at higher risk of HIV infection, and they were more likely to have short-term work. More targeted HIV prevention should be designed for new FSWs who recently began working in a locality to further control the spread of HIV, particularly cross-border FSWs.

The specific mechanism by which phosphorus affects nodule nitrogen fixation and nitrogen absorption in soybeans remains inconclusive. To further quantitatively analyze the effect of phosphorus on nodule nitrogen fixation and nitrogen accumulation in soybeans, this experiment was carried out under sand culture conditions. The experiment consisted of six phosphorus supply levels (1 mg/L, 11 mg/L, 21 mg/L, 31 mg/L, 41 mg/L, 51 mg/L). The acetylene reduction method and 15N tracer method (50 mg/L (NH4)2SO4) were used to determine and analyze the nodule growth status, nodule nitrogenase activity, nitrogen content, and nodule nitrogen fixation rate at initial flowering (R1 stage), initial pod (R3 stage), seed filling (R5 stage) and maturity stages (R8 stage). The results are described as follows: 1. The nitrogen fixation of soybean nodules at different growth stages has different requirements for phosphorus supply levels. The initial flowering stage and seed-filling stage were 31 mg/L–41 mg/L, and the initial pod stage was 51 mg/L. 2. The nitrogen source in different parts of soybean showed different trends with different growth periods and phosphorus supply concentrations. Among them, from the initial flowering stage to the seed filling stage, the main body of the nitrogen supply of soybean shoots in the low phosphorus treatment (1 mg/L–31 mg/L) gradually changed from fertilizer nitrogen to nodule nitrogen fixation, while the main body of the nitrogen supply of soybean shoots in the high phosphorus treatment (41 mg/L–51 mg/L) always showed nodule nitrogen fixation and was transformed into fertilizer nitrogen at the mature stage. The main nitrogen supply to the roots of soybean at different levels of phosphorus supply from the initial flowering to the initial pods and maturity stage was fertilizer nitrogen, and the main nitrogen supply at the seed filling stage was nodule nitrogen fixation. The nitrogen supply to the main body of soybean nodules was constantly nodule nitrogen fixation. 3. Different phosphorus supply levels significantly affected the nitrogen fixation of soybean nodules (R2 ≥ 0.803), and both the acetylene reduction method and the 15N tracer method could be used to determine the nitrogen fixation capacity of soybean nodules. This study indicated the optimal phosphorus supply level of nodules in different growth stages of soybean and clarified the main body of phosphorus supply in different parts of soybean at different growth stages, which pointed out the direction for further improving the utilization efficiency of soybean nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer.

Background: Medical students are affected by high levels of general anxiety disorder. However, few studies have specifically focused on the applicability of universal anxiety screening tools in this sample. This study was aimed to evaluate the psychometric property of the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) among Chinese medical university students.Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,021 medical postgraduates from six polyclinic hospitals. Internal consistency and convergent validity of the GAD-7 were evaluated. Factor analyses were used to test the construct validity of the scale. An item response theory (IRT) framework was used to estimate the parameters of each item. Multi-group confirmatory analyses and differential item function analyses were used to evaluate the measurement equivalence of the GAD-7 across age, gender, educational status, and residence.Results: Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.93 and the intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.71 to 0.87. The GAD-7 summed score was significantly correlated with measures of depression symptoms, perceived stress, sleep disorders, and life satisfaction. Parallel analysis and confirmatory factor analysis supported the one-factor structure of the GAD-7. Seven items showed appropriate discrimination and difficulty parameters. The GAD-7 showed good measurement equivalence across demographic characteristics. The total test information of the scale was 22.85, but the test information within the range of mild symptoms was relatively low.Conclusions: The GAD-7 has good reliability, validity, and measurement invariance among Chinese medical postgraduate students, but its measurement precision for mild anxiety symptoms is insufficient.

Background: Elevated serum uric acid (SUA) level is considered an independent predictor of all-cause mortality and the combined endpoint of death or readmission in cardiovascular disease patients. However, the causal relationship between uric acid-lowering therapies (ULTs) and heart failure is still controversial.Design: Meta-analyses were performed to systematically compile available evidence to determine the overall effect of ULTs on heart failure patients.Method: We conducted this systematic review following the PRISMA statement guidelines. Databases were searched to identify randomised controlled trials related to the influence of a ULT intervention in people with heart failure. Data extracted from the included studies were subjected to a meta-analysis to compare the effects of ULTs to a control.Results: Pooled analysis of left ventricular ejection fraction (LEVF) showed an insignificant result towards the ULT group (MD, 1.63%; 95%CI, −1.61 to 4.88; p = 0.32; three studies). Pooled analysis of the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) showed an insignificant result towards the ULT group (MD, 4.59; 95%CI, −12.683 to 22.00; p = 0.61; four studies). Pooled analysis of BNP/NT-pro-BNP led to a nearly statistically significant result towards the ULT group (SMD, −0.30; 95%CI, −0.64 to 0.04; p = 0.08; five studies). Pooled analysis of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular death between ULTs (all XOIs) and placebo did not show a significant difference (RR, 1.26; 95% CI, 0.74 to 2.15, p = 0.39).Conclusion: ULTs did not improve LVEF, BNP/NT-pro-BNP, 6MWT, all-cause mortality, and CV death in heart failure patients. UA may just be a risk marker of heart failure.

Objectives: To evaluate whether proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitor (PCSK9i) is associated with cardiovascular and safety events in statin-treated patients with cardiovascular risk. Methods: Electronic databases (Pubmed, Cochrane, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials.gov) were searched through March 31, 2020. Included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) compared PCSK9i use with no PCSK9i in statin treated patients. Two investigators abstracted data and appraised risks of bias. A meta-analysis was performed to calculate risk ratios (RRs) and 95% CIs using fix-effects models. Adjudicated cardiovascular events (CVE) and adverse drug events (ADE) were defined as the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes were cardiovascular (CV) death, all-cause death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, serious ADE and injection-site reaction. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare but fatal disease characterized by vascular cell proliferation; the pathogenesis of PAH has yet to be fully elucidated. Publicly available genetic data were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was used to determine significant differences in gene expression between tissues with PAH and healthy lung tissues. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using the online tool, GEO2R, and functional annotation of DEGs was performed using Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis. Next, the construction and module analysis of the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network and verification of the expression level of hub genes was performed. Finally, prediction and enrichment analysis of microRNAs associated with the hub genes was carried out. A total of 110 DEGs were detected by screening PAH and healthy lung samples. The expression of nine genes [polo-like kinase 4 (PLK4), centromere protein U, kinesin family member 20B, structural maintenance of chromosome 2 (SMC2), abnormal spindle microtubule assembly, Fanconi Anemia complementation group I, kinesin family member 18A, spindle apparatus coiled-coil protein 1, and MIS18 binding protein 1] was elevated in PAH; this was statistically significant compared with their expression in healthy lung tissue, and they were identified as hub genes. GO and KEGG analysis showed that the variations in DEGs were abundant in DNA-templated transcription, sister chromatid cohesion, mitotic nuclear division, cell proliferation, and regulation of the actin cytoskeleton. In conclusion, this study has successfully identified hub genes and key pathways of PAH, with a total of 110 DEGs and nine hub genes related to PAH, especially the PLK4 and SMC2 genes, thus providing important clues for the in-depth understanding of the molecular mechanism of PAH and providing potential therapeutic targets.

Background: Vitamin D and complement components shared some common pathophysiological pathways in the musculoskeletal system, circulation, and metabolism, which were linked to physical function. It is hypothesized that serum complement components may interact with vitamin D in respect of the physical activities of daily living (PADLs).Objective: To investigate if serum complement components 3 (C3), complement components 4 (C4), and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] associate with PADLs, and to examine whether the association between 25(OH)D levels and PADLs varies at different complement component levels among Chinese centenarians.Methods: This study was conducted in a group of population-based centenarians. PADLs were evaluated using the Barthel Index. Multiple regressions were used to analyze the associations among 25(OH)D, complements C3 and C4, and PADLs.Results: Among 943 participants, 672 (71.3%) had physical dependence (PD). After adjusting for potential confounders, serum 25(OH)D and C3 levels were positively correlated with PADLs, while C4 levels were negatively correlated with PADLs (Ps < 0.05). Serum 25(OH)D levels significantly interacted with both C3 (P for interaction = 0.033) and C4 (P for interaction = 0.006) levels on PADLs. At lower complement component levels, the multivariate odds ratios (ORs) of the upper tertile of vitamin D for PD were 0.32 (95% CI: 0.18–0.55) in the C3 group and 0.29 (95% CI: 0.16–0.50) in the C4 group. At higher complement component levels, the ORs in the C3 and C4 groups were not statistically significant.Conclusions: In a group of population-based Chinese centenarians, we observed that serum complement C3 and 25(OH)D levels were positively associated with PADLs, while C4 was negatively associated with PADLs. The associations between 25(OH)D levels and PADLs were more pronounced in groups with lower serum complement component levels.

The controlling of robotic arms based on brain–computer interface (BCI) can revolutionize the quality of life and living conditions for individuals with physical disabilities. Invasive electroencephalography (EEG)-based BCI has been able to control multiple degrees of freedom (DOFs) robotic arms in three dimensions. However, it is still hard to control a multi-DOF robotic arm to reach and grasp the desired target accurately in complex three-dimensional (3D) space by a noninvasive system mainly due to the limitation of EEG decoding performance. In this study, we propose a noninvasive EEG-based BCI for a robotic arm control system that enables users to complete multitarget reach and grasp tasks and avoid obstacles by hybrid control. The results obtained from seven subjects demonstrated that motor imagery (MI) training could modulate brain rhythms, and six of them completed the online tasks using the hybrid-control-based robotic arm system. The proposed system shows effective performance due to the combination of MI-based EEG, computer vision, gaze detection, and partially autonomous guidance, which drastically improve the accuracy of online tasks and reduce the brain burden caused by long-term mental activities.

Abstract A new type of polymer-infiltrated-ceramic-network composites (PICNs) was fabricated by infiltrating methacrylate-based monomers into partially sintered porous ceramics. The mechanical properties (flexural strength, flexural modulus, elastic modulus, Vickers hardness, fracture toughness) were investigated and compared with that of the natural tooth and common commercial CAD/CAM blocks. Our results indicated that sintering temperature and corresponding density of porous ceramics have an obvious influence on the mechanical properties, and PICNs could highly mimic the natural tooth in mechanical properties. The biocompatibility experiments evaluated through in vitro cell attachment and proliferation of BMSCs showed good biocompatibility. The mechanical properties and biocompatibility confirmed that PICN could be a promising candidate for CAD/CAM blocks for dental restoration.

Background: Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) has been shown to exacerbate atherosclerosis, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Adipose tissue is an energy storage organ and the largest endocrine organ in the human body, playing a key role in the development of cardiovascular disease. In this research, it was hypothesized that CUMS may exacerbate the development of atherosclerosis by inducing the hypertrophy and dysfunction of white adipocytes. Methods: The CUMS-induced atherosclerosis model was developed in Western diet-fed apolipoprotein E (ApoE)-/- mice. White adipose tissue (WAT), serum, aortic root, and the brachiocephalic trunk were collected and tested after 12 weeks of CUMS development. The mouse model of CUMS was evaluated for depression-like behavior using the open field test (OFT) and the elevated plus maze (EPM) test. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was conducted to detect serum noradrenaline and urine adrenaline protein levels. Serological assays were used to detect serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), and free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and oil red O were used to detect atherosclerotic plaque area, lipid deposition, and adipocyte size. The mRNA levels of genes related to aberrant adipose tissue function were determined using real-time PCR. Immunofluorescence assay and western blotting were conducted to examine the expression of proteins in the adipose tissue samples. Results: CUMS aggravated vascular atherosclerotic lesions in ApoE-/- mice. It decreased body weight while increasing the percentage of WAT. The serological results indicated that the concentration of HDL decreased in CUMS mice. Notably, adipocyte hypertrophy increased, whereas the mRNA levels of Pparg and its target genes (Slc2a4 (encodes for GLUT4), Adipoq, and Plin1) decreased. Further investigation revealed that CUMS increased subcutaneous inguinal WAT (iWAT) lipid synthesis and adipocyte inflammation while decreasing lipid hydrolysis and the expression of HDL-associated protein ApoA-I. Moreover, CUMS aggravated insulin resistance in mice and inhibited the insulin pathway in iWAT. Conclusions: These findings indicated that CUMS induces adipose tissue dysfunction via a mechanism that leads to dyslipidemia, increased inflammation, and insulin resistance in the body, thereby exacerbating atherosclerosis. Notably, CUMS that is involved in decreasing the expression of HDL-associated proteins in adipose tissue may be a crucial link between adipose hypertrophy and advanced atherosclerosis. This study reveals a novel mechanism via which CUMS exacerbates atherosclerosis from the novel perspective of abnormal adipose function and identifies a novel potential therapeutic target for this disease.
