Abstract

A unique type of apparatus is currently under construction as part of an upgrade to the radioactive ion beam facility at the University of Notre Dame Nuclear Structure Laboratory. The device will consist of a pair of large in-line superconducting solenoids (B0 = 6???tesla,B0=6tesla, bore=30???cmbore=30cm) which will be used to produce, collect, transport, focus and analyze both stable and radioactive nuclear beams. This apparatus in conjunction with the recently upgraded accelerators at Notre Dame is especially well suited for the production and utilization of intense (viz. >106/sec>106/sec), low-energy (1???10 MeV/u), stable and radioactive nuclear beams relevant to the study of reactions involved in astrophysical processes. These improvements will allow for the production of radioactive beams of greater intensity, higher purity and at both higher and lower energies than previously available at this facility. Abstract

For a consistent picture of fundamental physics and cosmology, three first principles are proposed as the foundations. That is, quantum variational principle that provides the formalism, consistent observation principle that set physical constraints and symmetries, and spacetime inflation principle that determines physical contents (particle fields and interactions). Under these three principles, a series of supersymmetric mirror models are constructed to study various phases of the universe at different spacetime dimensions and the dynamics between the phases. Abstract

Periodic stacking of topologically trivial and non-trivial layers with opposite symmetry of the valence and conduction bands induces topological interface states that, in the strong coupling limit, hybridize both across the topological and normal insulator layers. Using band structure engineering, such superlattices can be effectively realized using the IV-VI lead tin chalcogenides. This leads to emergent minibands with a tunable topology as demonstrated both by theory and experiments. The topological minibands are proven by magneto-optical spectroscopy, revealing Landau level transitions both at the center and edges of the artificial superlattice mini Brillouin zone. Their topological character is identified by the topological phase transitions within the minibands observed as a function of temperature. The critical temperature of this transition as well as the miniband gap and miniband width can be precisely controlled by the layer thicknesses and compositions. This witnesses the generation of a new fully tunable quasi-3D topological state that provides a template for realization of magnetic Weyl semimetals and other strongly interacting topological phases., 21 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We present the direct imaging discovery of a substellar companion to the nearby Sun-like star, HD 33632 Aa, at a projected separation of $\sim$ 20 au, obtained with SCExAO/CHARIS integral field spectroscopy complemented by Keck/NIRC2 thermal infrared imaging. The companion, HD 33632 Ab, induces a 10.5$\sigma$ astrometric acceleration on the star as detected with the $Gaia$ and $Hipparcos$ satellites. SCExAO/CHARIS $JHK$ (1.1--2.4 $\mu$m) spectra and Keck/NIRC2 $L_{\rm p}$ (3.78 $\mu$m) photometry are best matched by a field L/T transition object: an older, higher gravity, and less dusty counterpart to HR 8799 cde. Combining our astrometry with $Gaia/Hipparcos$ data and archival Lick Observatory radial-velocities, we measure a dynamical mass of 46.4 $\pm$ 8 $M_{\rm J}$ and an eccentricity of $e$ $, Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; ApJ Letters in press. Abstract

We have obtained Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) J-, H-, K1-, and K2-Spec observations of the iconic debris ring around the young, main-sequence star HR 4796A. We applied several point-spread function (PSF) subtraction techniques to the observations (Mask-and-Interpolate, RDI-NMF, RDI-KLIP, and ADI-KLIP) to measure the geometric parameters and the scattering phase function for the disk. To understand the systematic errors associated with PSF subtraction, we also forward-modeled the observations using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo framework and a simple model for the disk. We found that measurements of the disk geometric parameters were robust, with all of our analyses yielding consistent results; however, measurements of the scattering phase function were challenging to reconstruct from PSF-subtracted images, despite extensive testing. As a result, we estimated the scattering phase function using disk modeling. We searched for a dependence of the scattering phase function with respect to the GPI filters but found none. We compared the H-band scattering phase function with that measured by Hubble Space Telescope STIS at visual wavelengths and discovered a blue color at small scattering angles and a red color at large scattering angles, consistent with predictions and laboratory measurements of large grains. Abstract

In light of G\"{o}del's undecidability results (incomplete theorems) for math, quantum indeterminism indicates that physics and the Universe may be indeterministic, incomplete, and open in nature, and therefore demand no single unification theory of everything. The Universe is dynamic and so are the underlying physical models and spacetime. As the 4-d spacetime evolves dimension by dimension in the early universe, consistent yet different models emerge one by one with different sets of particles and interactions. A new set of first principles are proposed for building such models with new understanding of supersymmetry, mirror symmetry, and the dynamic phase transition mechanism - spontaneous symmetry breaking. Under this framework, we demonstrate that different models with no theory of everything operate in a hierarchical yet consistent way at different phases or scenarios of the Universe. Abstract

We analyzed the young (2.8-Myr-old) binary system FS Tau A using near-infrared (H-band) high-contrast polarimetry data from Subaru/HiCIAO and sub-millimeter CO (J=2-1) line emission data from ALMA. Both the near-infrared and sub-millimeter observations reveal several clear structures extending to $\sim$240 AU from the stars. Based on these observations at different wavelengths, we report the following discoveries. One arm-like structure detected in the near-infrared band initially extends from the south of the binary with a subsequent turn to the northeast, corresponding to two bar-like structures detected in ALMA observations with an LSRK velocity of 1.19-5.64 km/s. Another feature detected in the near-infrared band extends initially from the north of the binary, relating to an arm-like structure detected in ALMA observations with an LSRK velocity of 8.17-16.43 km/s. From their shapes and velocities, we suggest that these structures can mostly be explained by two streamers that connect the outer circumbinary disk and the central binary components. Abstract

We present κ Andromeda b's photometry and astrometry taken with Subaru/SCExAO+HiCIAO and Keck/NIRC2, combined with recently published SCExAO/CHARIS low-resolution spectroscopy and published thermal infrared photometry to further constrain the companion's atmospheric properties and orbit. The Y/Y−K colors of κ And b are redder than field dwarfs, consistent with its youth and lower gravity. Empirical comparisons of its Y-band photometry and CHARIS spectrum to a large spectral library of isolated field dwarfs reaffirm the conclusion from Currie et al. that it likely has a low gravity but admit a wider range of most plausible spectral types (L0–L2). Our gravitational classification also suggests that the best-fit objects for κ And b may have lower gravity than those previously reported. Atmospheric models lacking dust/clouds fail to reproduce its entire 1–4.7 μm spectral energy distribution (SED), and cloudy atmosphere models with temperatures of ~1700–2000 K better match κ And b data. Most well-fitting model comparisons favor 1700–1900 K, a surface gravity of log(g) ~ 4–4.5, and a radius of 1.3–1.6 R_(Jup); the best-fit model (DRIFT-PHOENIX) yields the coolest and lowest-gravity values: T_(eff) = 1700 K and log g = 4.0. An update to κ And b's orbit with ExoSOFT using new astrometry spanning 7 yr reaffirms its high eccentricity (0.77 ± 0.08). We consider a scenario where unseen companions are responsible for scattering κ And b to a wide separation and high eccentricity. If three planets, including κ And b, were born with coplanar orbits, and one of them was ejected by gravitational scattering, a potential inner companion with mass ≳10 M_(Jup) could be located at ≾25 au.
