Abstract

This dataset contains the anomalies of the total height and peak period of the waves and of the zonal and meridional components of the wind at 10 m above the sea surface obtained from the outputs of the GFS and WAVEWATCH III coupled global models in the entire tropical region (180°W to 178.75°E longitude/30°S to 30°N latitude), with a spatial resolution of 1.25°x1°. It is made up of two files in NetCDF format, where the data for wind anomalies (speed module and its zonal and meridional components) and wave anomalies (total wave height and peak period) are contained separately. This dataset was created in order to study all types of tropical storms, cold fronts and other physical processes that influence significant changes in wave parameters, as well as for the design and construction of coastal engineering works. Abstract

International audience; The western tropical Atlantic is strongly influenced by the Amazon, receiving the full discharge from the largest river basin of the world. In order to ascertain the coastal-oceanic gradient in abundance and composition of planktonic decapod communities along the Amazon River Plume (ARP) and its retroflection, 33 plankton samples were obtained along three sampling transects: Coastal and oceanic area influenced by the ARP (Coastal IARP and Ocean IARP, respectively), and oceanic waters without ARP influence (Ocean). A total of 13,117 specimens, belonging to 33 taxa, were analyzed. The distribution of planktonic decapod communities was strongly influenced by the Amazon discharge, showing the following patterns: (1) The coastal-oceanic gradients in decapod abundance are similar to other shelf areas of eastern South America, with higher abundance in the area under ARP influence, (2) meroplanktonic decapods dominate in coastal and some oceanic areas due to the offshore transport of coastal organisms along the ARP retroflection, and (3) the ARP is clearly responsible for the observed differences in community structure between the three transects. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of coastal and shelf environments as main sources of planktonic decapods for pelagic ecosystems in the tropical Atlantic during the period of strong North Brazil Current retroflection.

Abstract

This dataset corresponds to the outputs of the test domains generated by the simulations of the coupled GFS (Global Forecast System) and WAVEWATCH III models in the waters of the South Atlantic Ocean and in waters of the Brazilian Southern during the passage of a cold front and the presence of strong pressure gradient between a low-pressure system and a high-pressure system. In the files generated by WAVEWATCH III, wave fields are presented from 2016-03-25 14:00:00, which is the date from when the model it stabilizes. Also contained in this dataset are the files of the GFS model wind fields, the bathymetry files (eTOPO1) and the files of the bathymetry entries in WAVEWATCH III.All files with suffix 2 correspond to the geographic region 70°W to 4°W longitude and 55°S to 13°S latitude and all files with suffix 3 correspond to the geographic region 70°W at 20°W longitude and 55°S at 13°S latitude.

Abstract

International audience; This study focuses on analysing the potential impact of the Amazon and Pará Rivers on the salinity, temperature and hydrodynamics of the Western Tropical North Atlantic (WTNA) region between 60.5°-24°W and 5°S-16°N. The Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS) was used to simulate ocean circulation with 0.25°horizontal resolution and 32 vertical levels. Two numerical experiments were performed considering river discharge and river input. Temperature and salinity distributions obtained numerically were compared with Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) and in situ observations from the Prediction Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) buoys located at 38°W8°N and 38°W12°N. Surface currents were compared with Surface Currents from Diagnostic model (SCUD). Once we verified that model results agreed with observations, scenarios with and without river discharges were compared. The difference between both simulations in the Sea Surface Temperature distribution was smaller than 2°C, whereas the Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) changed by approximately 8 psu in the plume area close to the coast from August to December and reaching SSS differences of approximately 4 psu in the region of the North Equatorial Counter Current (NECC). The surface current velocities are stronger in the experiment with river discharge, mainly in the NECC area from September to December and close to the coast in June to August. The results show that river discharges also cause a phase shift in the zonal currents, anticipating the retroflection of the North Brazil Current by two months and enhancing eastward NECC transport, which is in agreement with observations. The Mixed Layer Depth and Isothermal Layer Depth in the presence of river discharge is 20-50 m shallower over the entire extension of the Amazon plume compared with the situation without continental inflows. As a consequence, stronger Barrier Layers develop in the river plumes, reducing the Oceanic Heat Content in the WTNA.

Abstract

A high-resolution nutrient biochemistry and carbonate system surface synoptic data set from the N-NE Brazilian continental shelf was reanalyzed to fill a gap in the time series of the carbonate system in the region and to allow us to perform a historical analysis of its evolution in recent years. We used data collected from 7 oceanographic cruises (n = 852) undertaken between March 1995 and September 2001 during the Brazilian Program "REVIZEE" in the North (N) and Northeast (NE) Economical Exclusive Zones of Brazil. Measured temperature and salinity data, which exhibited strong fluctuations (25.5 degrees C - 29.5 degrees C and 13.2-37.4 units, respectively), showed significant differences between the N and NE campaigns. The concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), PO4- and SiO2- were higher in the N region than in the NE region, mainly due to fluvial transport, and nitrogen: phosphorus (N:P) ratios of < 16 and oxygen supersaturation were observed within the Amazon plume. The concentrations of riverine nutrients in the N region support primary production occurring in the offshore plume area. The calculated total alkalinity (1031-2437 mol kg(-1)) values showed strong spatial variations that were mainly associated with the Amazon plume. The calculated pCO(2) values reached 423 mu atm offshore in the NE region during boreal winter. The calculated sea-air CO2 fluxes (average: + 0.3 +/- 1.7 mmol m(-2) d(-1); range: -1.2 to + 2.0 mmol m(-2) d(-1)) showed spatial and temporal variations, with negative values (sink) in the region of the Amazon River plume and positive values (source) offshore in the NE region (4 degrees S to 12 degrees S). The variability in the sea-air CO2 fluxes in the N and NE regions was explained by variations in biological activity and the thermodynamic effect of temperature, respectively. The analysis of available data, complemented with those presented here, indicated that the surface water pCO(2) values showed a positive temporal trend (+ 1.10 +/- 0.2 mu atm yr(-1)) in the NE region during the period of 1987-2010. This rate of increase is lower than that verified to have occurred in the atmosphere (+1.72 +/- 0.01 mu atm yr(-1)) during the same period.

6. Influence of underwater hydrodynamics on oil and gas blowouts off Amazon River Mouth

Abstract

International audience; This study is focused on analyzing the behavior of oil/gas plumes from blowouts into deepwater, located at the northern Brazil continental shelf. The Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) model is used to simulate ocean dynamics in the region 60.5°-24.0°W/5°S-16°N with 0.25° of resolution, 32 vertical levels and considering the discharges of the Amazon and Pará Rivers. The ROMS output are compared to Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) dataset. Three points were selected to make the numerical simulations, located at (50°W, 5.25°N), (44.5°W, 0.5°N) and (42.75°W, 1°S). The time step suggested by Lee and Cheung (1990) was adjusted due to the particular oceanographic conditions at each point, in which, the initial velocity tends to zero and the coefficient 0.1 of the original equation was replaced by 0.0250 and 0.0375. All the plumes behaved as type 3. The seasonal current speed was small from the bottom to the surface, usually not exceeding 0.25 ms-1; the maximum displacement of the plumes from its point of origin was not greater than 1 m. The mean plumes diameter on the surface ranged 54 - 79.7 m and the arrival time to the surface was from 7.25 to 8.05 hours.; O estudo está focado na análise do comportamento das plumas de vazamento de óleo/gás em águas profundas, localizadas na plataforma continental do norte do Brasil. O modelo Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) é utilizado para simular a dinâmica oceânica na região 60.5°-24°W/5°S-16°N com 0.25° de resolução, 32 níveis verticais e considerando as descargas dos rios Amazonas e Pará. A saída do modelo ROMS é comparada com o conjunto de dados SODA (Simple Ocean Data Assimilation). Três pontos foram selecionados para fazer as simulações numéricas, localizados em (50°W, 5.25°N), (44.5°W, 0.5°N) e (42.75°W, 1°S). O passo do tempo sugerido por Lee e Cheung (1990) foi ajustado devido às condições oceanográficas particulares em cada ponto, em que a velocidade inicial tende a zero. O coeficiente 0.1 da equação original foi substituído por 0.0250 e 0.0375. Todas as plumas se comportaram como tipo 3. A velocidade de corrente sazonal foi pequena do fundo á superfície, não excedendo 0.25 ms-1 ; o deslocamento máximo das plumas de seu ponto de origem não foi maior do que 1 m. O diâmetro médio das plumas na superfície variou de 54 a 79.7 m e o tempo de chegada à superfície foi de 7.25 a 8.05 horas.

Abstract

International audience; To reduce uncertainty regarding the contribution of continental shelf areas in low latitude regions to the air-sea CO2 exchange, more data are required to understand the carbon turnover in these regions and cover gaps in coverage. For the first time, inorganic carbon and alkalinity were measured along a cross-shelf transect off the coast of Maranhão (North Brazil) in 9 cruises spawning from April 2013 to September 2014. On the last 4 transects, dissolved organic matter and nutrients were also measured. The highest inorganic and organic carbon concentrations are observed close to land. As a result of low productivity and significant remineralization, heterotrophy dominates along the transect throughout the year. Although the temporal variability is significantly reduced at the offshore station with carbon concentrations decreasing seaward, the fugacity of CO2 (fCO2) at this station remains significantly higher, especially during the wet season, than the open ocean values measured routinely by a merchant ship further west. Overall, the continental shelf is a weak source of CO2 to the atmosphere throughout the year with an annual 2 mean flux of 1.81 ± 0.84 mmol m-2 d-1. The highest magnitudes of fCO2 are observed during the wet season when the winds are the weakest. As a result, the CO2 flux does not show a clear seasonal pattern. Further offshore, fCO2 is significantly lower than on the continental shelf. However, the oceanic CO2 flux, with an annual mean of 2.32 ± 1.09 mmol m-2 d-1 , is not statistically different from the CO2 flux at the continental shelf because the wind is stronger in the open ocean.

Abstract

The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is a synthesis of quality-controlled fCO2 (fugacity of carbon dioxide) values for the global surface oceans and coastal seas with regular updates. Version 3 of SOCAT has 14.7 million fCO2 values from 3646 data sets covering the years 1957 to 2014. This latest version has an additional 4.6 million fCO2 values relative to version 2 and extends the record from 2011 to 2014. Version 3 also significantly increases the data availability for 2005 to 2013. SOCAT has an average of approximately 1.2 million surface water fCO2 values per year for the years 2006 to 2012. Quality and documentation of the data has improved. A new feature is the data set quality control (QC) flag of E for data from alternative sensors and platforms. The accuracy of surface water fCO2 has been defined for all data set QC flags. Automated range checking has been carried out for all data sets during their upload into SOCAT. The upgrade of the interactive Data Set Viewer (previously known as the Cruise Data Viewer) allows better interrogation of the SOCAT data collection and rapid creation of high-quality figures for scientific presentations. Automated data upload has been launched for version 4 and will enable more frequent SOCAT releases in the future. High-profile scientific applications of SOCAT include quantification of the ocean sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide and its long-term variation, detection of ocean acidification, as well as evaluation of coupled-climate and ocean-only biogeochemical models. Users of SOCAT data products are urged to acknowledge the contribution of data providers, as stated in the SOCAT Fair Data Use Statement. This ESSD (Earth System Science Data) "living data" publication documents the methods and data sets used for the assembly of this new version of the SOCAT data collection and compares these with those used for earlier versions of the data collection (Pfeil et al., 2013; Sabine et al., 2013; Bakker et al., 2014). Abstract

The spatial and temporal variations of the flux of CO2 were determined during 2007 in the Recife estuarine system (RES), a tropical estuary that receives anthropogenic loads from one of the most populated and industrialized areas of the Brazilian coast. The RES acts as a source of nutrients (N and P) for coastal waters. The calculated CO2 fluxes indicate that the upstream inputs of CO2 from the rivers are largely responsible for the net annual CO2 emission to the atmosphere of +30 to +48 mmol m(-2) day(-1), depending on the CO2 exchange calculation used, which mainly occurs during the late austral winter and early summer. The observed inverse relationship between the CO2 flux and the net ecosystem production (NEP) indicates the high heterotrophy of the system (except for the months of November and December). The NEP varies between -33 mmol m(-2) day(-1) in summer and -246 mmol m(-2) day(-1) in winter. The pCO(2) values were permanently high during the study period (average similar to 4,700 mu atm) showing a gradient between the inner (12,900 mu atm) and lower (389 mu atm) sections on a path of approximately 30 km. This reflects a state of permanent pollution in the basin due to the upstream loading of untreated domestic effluents (N/P = 1,367:6 mu mol kg(-1) and pH = 6.9 in the inner section), resulting in the continuous mineralization of organic material by heterotrophic organisms and thereby increasing the dissolved CO2 in estuarine waters.

Abstract

International audience; Following the 2009 Pacific El Niño, a warm event developed in the tropical and subtropical North Atlantic during boreal spring of 2010 promoted a significant increase in the CO2 fugacity of surface waters. This, together with the relaxation of the prevailing wind fields, resulted in the reversal of the atmospheric CO2 absorption capacity of the tropical and subtropical North Atlantic. In the region 0–30°N, 62–10°W, this climatic event led to the reversal of the climatological CO2 sink of −29.3 Tg C to a source of CO2 to the atmosphere of 1.6 Tg C from February to May. The highest impact of this event is verified in the region of the North Equatorial Current, where the climatological CO2 uptake of −22.4 Tg for that period ceased during 2010 (1.2 Tg C). This estimate is higher than current assessments of the multidecadal variability of the sea-air CO2 exchange for the entire North Atlantic (20 Tg year−1), and highlights the potential impact of the increasing occurrence of extreme climate events over the oceanic CO2 sink and atmospheric CO2 composition. Anthropogenic CO2 emission to the atmosphere is widely considered the main cause of current climate change. Since the industrial revolution, the oceans have absorbed about 40–50% of all the anthropogenic CO2 emissions 1,2 , thus mitigating its effects over the Earth climate system. Nevertheless, studies have suggested that the oceanic C sink may be decreasing for the last 50 years 3,4. Whether these changes are caused from anthropogenic climate change or internal climate variability is still uncertain 4–6 , but they could significantly impact future atmospheric CO2 levels. The North Atlantic north of 18°N is one of the oceanic regions of strongest CO2 uptake (420 ± 110 Tg C y−1) representing 30% of the global oceanic CO2 sink 7 , and an estimated interannual and multidecadal CO2 uptake variability of 20 Tg C yr −1 7–9. The area of the North Atlantic with CO2 uptake that is most sensitive to climate forcing (changes in sea surface temperature (SST) and wind speed) is the subtropical North Atlantic 10. There, the sea-air CO2 exchange is mainly controlled by sea surface temperature (SST) changes due to its permanent oligotrophic conditions outside upwelling areas, thus presenting the strongest seasonal variability in the sea-air CO2 exchange of this ocean 10. Recent warming identified in the region, partially linked to anthropogenic forcing, is already reducing its CO2 uptake 11. Large-scale climate modes such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) can mitigate or exacerbate anthropogenic-driven SST increase in the North Atlantic and its effects over the sea-air CO2 exchange 12. In 2009, a strong El Niño event occurred in the Pacific. ENSO events are known to promote positive SST anomalies in the northern tropical Atlantic through a teleconnection driven through the troposphere with a time lag of a few months 13. In boreal spring of 2010, this event coincided with a strong positive AMO resulting in a strong positive SST anomaly associated with negative wind speed anomalies in the tropical Atlantic 14,15 (Fig. 1). Its impact in the equatorial Atlantic sea-air CO2 exchange has been explored by Lefèvre et al. 14 , who showed that during this period the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) was shifted northward compared to its climatological position, associated with a significant reduction of rainfall. The CO2 undersaturation promoted by the intense rainfall associated with the ITCZ was thus significantly reduced and, consequently, CO2 outgassing in this area increased. As their study mainly focused on the Western equatorial Atlantic, the impact of this climatic event in the sea-air CO2 exchange in the North Atlantic is currently unknown.
