Abstract

Application of composite coatings allows solving the problem of prolongation of service life of quicklyworn equipment parts. The development of iron-based binder composition for composites reinforced with tungsten carbides is imperative to enhance wear resistance of the coatings. Methodology. The macroheterogeneous composites reinforced with tungsten carbides were produced by infiltration at 1453 К during 30 minutes without applying pressure. The Fe–3%C–1,8%B–1%P and Fe–3%C–1,8%B–1%P–0,5%Мо alloys were used as metal binders. The structure of the composites was investigated by metallographic, Xray, and energy dispersive X-ray analyses. To control structural and phase composition of contact interaction zones appearingbetween the filler and the binder during infiltration an original method of statistical structural analysis was applied. Findings. Alloying the Fe–C–B–P binder with molybdenum is established to allow decreasing the intensity of contact interaction processes between the filler and the molten binder during infiltration. As the result, the undesirable brittle Fe3W3C and austenite phases do not appear in the structure of contact interaction zones. It is shown that the accuracy of quantitative characteristics determination can be essentially improved thanks to application of the suggested statistical analysis of microphotographies. Total entropies of the contact interaction zones phases are calculated using probability density curves showing the hitting of the certain interval by the intensities of the microscope light reflected from the polished section. Originality. The regularities of the structure formation of the contact interaction zones appearing between the W–C filler and the solidified Fe–C–B–P or Fe–C–B–P–Мо binders were investigated. To identify and determine relative phase content the original method of statistical structural analysis was applied. Для увеличения износостойкости покрытий необходима разработка состава сплава-связки на железной основе для композиционных материалов, упрочненных гранулами карбидов вольфрама. Методика. Макрогетерогенные композиционные материалы, упрочненные гранулами карбидов вольфрама, изготавливали методом свободной пропитки при температуре 1453 К в течение 30 минут. В качестве металлических связок использовали сплавы Fe–3%C–1,8%B–1%P и Fe–3%C–1,8%B–1%P–0,5%Мо. Структуру композиционных материалов исследовали методами металлографического, рентгеноструктурного и микрорентгеноспектрального анализов. Для контроля структурного и фазового состава зон контактного взаимодействия, образующихся между наполнителем и связкой при пропитке, использовалиоригинальную методику статистического анализа структуры. Результаты. Установлено, что легирование сплава-связки Fe–C–B–P молибденом позволяет уменьшить интенсивность процессов контактного взаимодействия между наполнителем и расплавленной связкой при пропитке. За счет этого подавляется выделение нежелательных хрупких фаз Fe3W3C и аустенита в структуре зон контактного взаимодействия. Показано, что точность определения количественных характеристик структуры можно существенно повысить благодаря использованию предложенной методики статистического анализа микрофотографий. Рассчитаны суммарные энтропии фаз в зонах контактного взаимодействия с использованием кривых распределения плотности вероятности попадания значений интенсивности отраженного от шлифа света от микроскопа в заданный интервал. Научная новизна. Изучены закономерности структурообразования зон контактного взаимодействия, образующихся между сплавом-наполнителем W–C и затвердевшими сплавами-связками Fe–C–B–P и Fe–C–B–P–Мо, в структуре композиционных материалов. Для идентификации и определения, Застосування композиційних покриттів дозволяє вирішити проблему подовження терміну роботи швидкозношуваних деталей обладнання. Для підвищення зносостійкості покриттів необхідна розробка складу сплаву-зв’язки на залізній основі для композиційних матеріалів, зміцнених гранулами карбідів вольфраму. Методика. Макрогетерогеннікомпозиційні матеріали, змінені гранулами карбідів вольфраму, виготовляли методом вільного просочення при температурі1453 К протягом 30 хвилин. В якості металевої зв’язки застосовували сплави Fe–3%C–1,8%B–1%P і Fe–3%C–1,8%B–1%P–0,5%Мо. Структуру композиційних матеріалів досліджували методами металографічного, рентгеноструктурного імікрорентгеноспектрального аналізів. Для контролю структурного і фазового состава зон контактної взаємодії, що утворюються між наповнювачем і зв’язкою при просоченні, використовували оригінальну методику статистичного аналізуструктури. Результати. Встановлено, що легування сплаву-зв’язки Fe–C–B–P молібденом дозволяє зменшити інтенсивність процесів контактної взаємодії між наповнювачем і розплавленою зв’язкою при просоченні. За рахунок цього усуваєтьсявиділення небажаних крихких фаз Fe3W3C і аустеніту в структурі зон контактної взаємодії. Показано, що точність визначеннякількісних характеристик структури можна суттєво підвищити завдяки застосуванню запропонованої методики статистичного аналізу мікрофотографій. Розраховані сумарні ентропії фаз у зонах контактної взаємодії за допомогою кривих розподілу густини ймовірності потрапляння значень інтенсивності відбитого від шліфа світла від мікроскопу в заданий інтервал.Наукова новизна. Abstract

Purpose. Quasicrystal alloys show promise as a way to create composite materials with unique properties. The search for new compositions and fabrication technologies of composites is needed to enhance their performance life. Methodology. Macroheterogeneous composites reinforced by macrogranules made of Al6sCo20Cu15 quasicrystal alloy were fabricated by pressure-free infiltration at 670 °С during 2 0 .3 0 minutes. АМг30 metal alloy wasused as binder. The composites’ structure was investigated by the methods of metallography, X-Ray analysis and X-Ray microanalysis. Findings. It is shown that the method of pressure-free infiltration allows the practically defect-free structure of АМг30/(Al65Co2oCul5) composite material to be achieved. The changes in the phase composition of the composites affected by temperature-and-time infiltration cycle were determined. The structure formation of interfaces between the filler and the binder is established to proceed under dissolution-and-diffusion mechanism. During the infiltration quasicrystal D-phase dissolves in the infiltrating metal at much higher rate compared to that of crystal phases. This would account for relative content of the quasicrystals in the composites’ structure at the level of not less than 25 pct. Originality. For the first time the method of pressure-free infiltration was applied to fabricate macroheterogeneous composite materials reinforced by quasicrystal filler macrogranules. The temperature-and-time process variables were determined. Al6sCo20Cu15 quasicrystal alloy as filler and АМг30 alloy as metal binder are shown to be promising structural components of the macroheterogeneous composites. The peculiarities in structure formation of interfaces between the filler and the binder were studied. Practical value. For the first time Al6sCo20Cu15 quasicrystal granules sized from 0,25 to 1,5 mm were used to reinforce macroheterogeneous composite materials fabricated by pressure-free infiltration method. Quasicrysta, Цель. Использование квазикристаллических сплавов открывает широкие перспективы для создания композиционных материалов с уникальными свойствами. Для увеличения эксплуатационной стойкости необходима разработка новых составов композиционных материалов и технологий их изготовления. Методика. Макрогетерогенные композиционные материалы, упрочненные макрогранулами квазикристаллического сплава Al65C020Cui5, изготавливали методом свободной пропитки при температуре 670 °С в течение 20...30 минут. В качестве металлической связки использовали сплав марки АМг30. Структуру композиционных материалов исследовали методами металлографического, рентгеноструктурного и микрорентгеноспектрального анализов. Результаты. Показано, что метод свободной пропитки позволяет получать практически бездефектную макрогетерогенную структуру композиционного материала АМг30/(АІ65С 020Сщ5). Определены изменения фазового состава структурных составляющих композиционных материалов, вызванные влиянием температурновременного цикла пропитки. Установлено, что формирование границ раздела между наполнителем и связкой протекает по растворно-диффузионному механизму. В процессе пропитки квазикристаллическая D-фаза сплава-наполнителя растворяется в пропитывающем металле со значительно меньшей скоростью по сравнению с кристаллическими фазами. За счет этого достигается относительное содержание квазикристаллов в структуре композиционных материалов не менее 25%. Научная новизна. Впервые для изготовления макрогетерогенных композиционных материалов, упрочненных макрогранулами квазикристаллического сплава, применен метод свободной пропитки. Определены температурно-временные параметры технологического процесса. Показана перспективность использования квазикристаллического сплава Al65C020Cui5 в качестве наполнителя и сплава марки АМг30 в качестве металлической связки макрогетерогенного композиционного материала. Изучены закономерности структурообразования границ раздела между наполнителем и связкой композиционных материалов. П, Мета. Застосування квазікристалічних сплавів відкриває широкі перспективи для створення композиційних матеріалів з унікальними властивостями. Для підвищення експлуатаційної стійкості необхідна розробка нових композиційних матеріалів і технологій їх виготовлення. Методика. Макрогетерогенні композиційні матеріали, зміцнені частинками квазікристалічного сплаву AI65C020CU15, виготовляли методом вільного просочення при температурі 670 °С протягом 20.30 хвилин. Металевою зв’язкою слугував сплав марки АМг30. Структуру композиційних матеріалів досліджували методами металографічного, рентгеноструктурного та мікрорентгеноспектрального аналізів. Результати. Показано, що метод вільного просочення дозволяє отримувати практично бездефектну макрогетерогенну структуру композиційного матеріалу АМг30/(А1б5С020Сиі5). Визначено зміни фазового складу структурних складових композиційних матеріалів, викликані впливом температурно-часового циклу просочення. Встановлено, що формування границь поділу між наповнювачем і зв’язкою відбувається за розчинно-дифузійним механізмом. У процесі просочення квазікристалічна D-фаза сплаву-наповнювача розчиняється в просочуючому металі зі значно меншою швидкістю порівняно з кристалічними фазами. За рахунок цього досягається відносний вміст квазікристалів у структурі композиційних матеріалів не менше 25%. Наукова новизна. Вперше для виготовлення композиційних матеріалів, зміцнених частинками квазікристалічних сплавів, застосовано метод вільного просочення. Визначено температурно-часові параметри технологічного процесу. Показано перспективність використання квазікристалічного сплаву AI65C020CU15 як наповнювача та сплаву марки АМг30 як металевої зв’язки макрогетерогенного композиційного матеріалу. We generalize the standard methods of quantum statistical physics and thermodynamics to the multidimensional case and apply them in order to derive different thermodynamic quantities, characterizing an ideal gas of non-relativistic particles. In particular, we obtain the formula for the pressure in the internal space.

Abstract

International audience; A 13.56 MHz RF discharge in hydrogen was studied within the pressure range of 1-17 10 Pa, and at power range of 400-1000 W. The electron energy distribution function and 18 electron density were measured by a Langmuir probe. The gas temperature was determined by 19 the Fulcher-α system in pure H2, and by the second positive system of nitrogen using N2 as the 20 probing gas. The gas temperature was constant and equal to 450 ± 50 K in the Capacitively 21 Coupled Plasma mode (CCP), and it was increasing with pressure and power in the Inductively 22 Coupled Plasma mode (ICP). Also the vibrational temperature of ground state of hydrogen 23 molecules was determined to be around 3100 and 2000 ± 500 K in ICP and CCP mode, 24 respectively. The concentration of atomic hydrogen was determined by means of actinometry, 25 either by using Ar (5 %) as the probing gas, or by using H2 as the actinometer in pure hydrogen 26 (Q1 rotational line of Fulcher-α system) The concentration of hydrogen density was increasing 27 with pressure in both modes, but with a dissociation degree slightly higher in the ICP mode (a 28 factor 2). 29 30 Submitted to Physica Scripta 31

Abstract

9 pages; International audience; This paper illustrates the potentialities of a home-made portable LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) instrument in Earth sciences, more particularly in geochemically recognizing (i) tephra layers in lacustrine sediments and (ii) fossilization processes in ammonites. Abundances for selected lines of Al, Ca, Fe, Ti, Ba and Na were determined in lacustrine chalk sediments of the Jura, where the Laacher See Tephra (LST) layer is recorded. A statistical treatment of elemental maps produced from the section of a sedimentary column containing the LST event allows instrumental conditions to be optimized. Accumulating spectra from close shot positions gives better results than multiplying shots at the same location. A depth profile method was applied to study ammonite fossilization (pyritization, phosphatization) processes. Depth variations of Fe, Ca, Al intensities, and Fe/Ca and Al/Ca ratios provide indications about pyritization, but phosphatization processes cannot be determined with our device.

Abstract

International audience; To support experimental investigations, a model based on ChemkinTM software was used to simulate gas phase and surface chemistry during plasma-enhanced catalytic CVD of carbon nanotubes. According to these calculations, gas phase composition, etching process and growth rates are calculated. The role of several carbon species, hydrocarbon molecules and ions in the growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes is presented in this study. Study of different conditions of gas phase activation sources and pressure is performed.

Abstract

International audience; Room temperature absorption spectra of ammonia were recorded by high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy in the 4700-5600 cm −1 range at four pressures (13, 46, 140, and 304 Pa). Additionally, we use an existing Kitt Peak spectrum to extend the analysis up to 5650 cm −1. In total, 9110 absorption lines with intensity ranging from 1 × 10 −25 to 1.6 × 10 −20 cm/molecule were retrieved, for the two principal isotopologues. Another Kitt Peak spectrum was used to identify 505 15 NH 3 transitions within the experimental line list. The rovibrational assignments of the 14 NH 3 lines relied on the position and intensity agreement with the C2018 theoretical line list (Coles et al. JQSRT 2018;219 199-212) and were validated by the systematic use of Lower State Combination Difference (LSCD) relations. In the process, a number of intensity transfer between nearby transitions were identified. Finally, 6562 transitions were assigned to 61 vibrational bands of the main isotopologue, 14 NH 3 , representing over 99.8% of the C2018 integrated absorption at room temperature in the region. The upper state empirical energy of a total of 2215 rovibrational levels of 14 NH 3 were derived. Most of them are newly reported. The comparison with the current HITRAN2020 list is discussed. A recommended line list for ammonia in natural isotopic abundance is provided for the studied region.

Abstract

We developed a method for sensitive elemental analysis of wines using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In order to overcome the inefficiency of direct ablation of bulk wine (an organic liquid), a thin layer of wine residue was prepared on a metallic target according to an appropriated heating procedure applied to an amount of liquid wine dropped on the target surface. The obtained ensemble was thus ablated. Such a sample preparation procedure used a very small volume of 2 mL of wine and took only 30 min without reagent or solvent. The results show the detection of tens of metal and non-metal elements including majors (Na, Mg, K, Ca), minors, and traces (Li, B, Si, P, Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Ba, and Pb) in wines purchased from local supermarkets and from different production places in France. Commercially available wines were then spiked with certified standard solutions of Ti and Fe. Three series of laboratory reference samples were thus prepared using three different wines (a red wine and a white wine from a same production region and a red wine from another production region) with concentrations of Ti and Fe in the range of 1–40 mg/L. Calibration graphs established with the spiked samples allowed extracting the figures-of-merit parameters of the method for wine analysis such as the coefficient of determination ( R2) and the limits of detection and quantification (LOD and LOQ). The calibration curves built with the three wines were then compared. We studied the residual matrix effect between these wines in the determination of the concentrations of Ti and Fe.

Abstract

Glutaraldehyde is a well-known substance used in biomedical research to fix cells. Since hemolytic anemias are often associated with red blood cell shape changes deviating from the biconcave disk shape, conservation of these shapes for imaging in general and 3D-imaging in particular, like confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy or scanning probe microscopy is a common desire. Along with the fixation comes an increase in the stiffness of the cells. In the context of red blood cells this increased rigidity is often used to mimic malaria infected red blood cells because they are also stiffer than healthy red blood cells. However, the use of glutaraldehyde is associated with numerous pitfalls: (i) while the increase in rigidity by an application of increasing concentrations of glutaraldehyde is an analog process, the fixation is a rather digital event (all or none); (ii) addition of glutaraldehyde massively changes osmolality in a concentration dependent manner and hence cell shapes can be distorted; (iii) glutaraldehyde batches differ in their properties especially in the ratio of monomers and polymers; (iv) handling pitfalls, like inducing shear artifacts of red blood cell shapes or cell density changes that needs to be considered, e.g., when working with cells in flow; (v) staining glutaraldehyde treated red blood cells need different approaches compared to living cells, for instance, because glutaraldehyde itself induces a strong fluorescence. Within this paper we provide documentation about the subtle use of glutaraldehyde on healthy and pathologic red blood cells and how to deal with or circumvent pitfalls.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to determine a mathematical modelling of piezoceramic disc vibration using a single degree freedom mechanical model, with estimation of its elasticity modulus. The experimental vibration displacement values of piezo ceramic disc have been achieved utilizing the swept-sine signal excitation following the peak values in the signal response measured by the laser Doppler vibrometer. Consistency between the mathematical modelling and experimental values have been observed from 97 to 80% between excitation amplitudes of 0.5 and 3.5 V when the mathematical modeling of piezo ceramic disc is normally taken into consideration with a linear working range. The results obtained from experimental studies on resonance frequency are in a compliance with reference value declared by producer of the piezo ceramic disc. © 2018 Elsevier GmbH

Abstract

Terbium doped silicon oxynitride host matrix is suitable for various applications such as light emitters compatible with CMOS technology or frequency converter systems for photovoltaic cells. In this study, amorphous Tb3+ ion doped nitrogen-rich silicon oxynitride (NRSON) thin films were fabricated using a reactive magnetron co-sputtering method, with various N2 flows and annealing conditions, in order to study their structural and emission properties. Rutherford backscattering (RBS) measurements and refractive index values confirmed the silicon oxynitride nature of the films. An electron microscopy analysis conducted for different annealing temperatures (T A) was also performed up to 1200 {\textdegree}C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed two different sublayers. The top layer showed porosities coming from a degassing of oxygen during deposition and annealing, while in the region close to the substrate, a multilayer-like structure of SiO2 and Si3N4 phases appeared, involving a spinodal decomposition. Upon a 1200 {\textdegree}C annealing treatment, a significant density of Tb clusters was detected, indicating a higher thermal threshold of rare earth (RE) clusterization in comparison to the silicon oxide matrix. With an opposite variation of the N2 flow during the deposition, the nitrogen excess parameter (Nex) estimated by RBS measurements was introduced to investigate the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum behavior and emission properties. Different vibration modes of the Si--N and Si--O bonds have been carefully identified from the FTIR spectra characterizing such host matrices, especially the 'out-of-phase' stretching vibration mode of the Si--O bond. The highest Tb3+ photoluminescence (PL) intensity was obtained by optimizing the N incorporation and the annealing conditions. In addition, according to these conditions, the integrated PL intensity variation confirmed that the silicon nitride-based host matrix had a higher thermal threshold of rare earth clusterization than its silicon oxide counterpart. Analysis of time-resolved PL intensity versus T A showed the impact of Tb clustering on decay times, in agreement with the TEM observations. Finally, PL and PL excitation (PLE) experiments and comparison of the related spectra between undoped and Tb-doped samples were carried out to investigate the impact of the band tails on the excitation mechanism of Tb3+ ions.

Abstract

The hippocampal formation is a brain structure integrally involved in episodic memory, spatial navigation, cognition and stress responsiveness. Structural abnormalities in hippocampal volume and shape are found in several common neuropsychiatric disorders. To identify the genetic underpinnings of hippocampal structure here we perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 33,536 individuals and discover six independent loci significantly associated with hippocampal volume, four of them novel. Of the novel loci, three lie within genes (ASTN2, DPP4 and MAST4) and one is found 200 kb upstream of SHH. A hippocampal subfield analysis shows that a locus within the MSRB3 gene shows evidence of a localized effect along the dentate gyrus, subiculum, CA1 and fissure. Further, we show that genetic variants associated with decreased hippocampal volume are also associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (rg=-0.155). Abstract

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been applied to classify French wines according to their production regions. The use of the surface-assisted (or surface-enhanced) sample preparation method enabled a sub-ppm limit of detection (LOD), which led to the detection and identification of at least 22 metal and nonmetal elements in a typical wine sample including majors, minors and traces. An ensemble of 29 bottles of French wines, either red or white wines, from five production regions, Alsace, Bourgogne, Beaujolais, Bordeaux and Languedoc, was analyzed together with a wine from California, considered as an outlier. A non-supervised classification model based on principal component analysis (PCA) was first developed for the classification. The results showed a limited separation power of the model, which however allowed, in a step by step approach, to understand the physical reasons behind each step of sample separation and especially to observe the influence of the matrix effect in the sample classification. A supervised classification model was then developed based on random forest (RF), which is in addition a nonlinear algorithm. The obtained classification results were satisfactory with, when the parameters of the model were optimized, a classification accuracy of 100% for the tested samples. We especially discuss in the paper, the effect of spectrum normalization with an internal reference, the choice of input variables for the classification models and the optimization of parameters for the developed classification models.

Abstract

International audience; Amorphous selenium (a-Se) is the simplest model material for investigation of the well-known photoinduced structural and optical transformations in amorphous chalcogenides. Since a lot of parameters and characteristics of materials essentially change at nanoscale, we applied nanostructuring to a -Se in nanomultilayers, obtained by pulsed laser deposition. The enhancement of photo- and thermally-induced crystallization was observed in a-Se/aluminosilicate nanomultilayers due to the initially heterogeneous state of Se in such samples, in comparison with single a -Se layers.

Abstract

The microlensing event OGLE-2011-BLG-0417 is an exceptionally bright lens binary that was predicted to present radial velocity variation at the level of several km/s. Pioneer radial velocity follow-up observations with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO - VLT of this system clearly ruled out the large radial velocity variation, leaving a discrepancy between the observation and the prediction. In this paper, we further characterise the microlensing system by analysing its spectral energy distribution (SED) derived using the UVES spectrum and new observations with the ARCoIRIS (CTIO) near-infrared spectrograph and the Keck adaptive optics instrument NIRC2 in the J, H, and Ks bands. We determine the mass and distance of the stars independently from the microlensing modelling. We find that the SED is compatible with a giant star in the Galactic bulge and a foreground star with a mass of 0.94+/-0.09Msun at a distance of 1.07+/-0.24kpc. We find that this foreground star is likely the lens. Its parameters are not compatible with the ones previously reported in the literature (0.52+/-0.04Msun at 0.95+/-0.06kpc), based on the microlensing light curve. A thoughtful re-analysis of the microlensing event is mandatory to fully understand the reason of this new discrepancy. More importantly, this paper demonstrates that spectroscopic follow-up observations of microlensing events are possible and provide independent constraints on the parameters of the lens and source stars, hence breaking some degeneracies in the analysis. UV-to-NIR low-resolution spectrographs like X-SHOOTER (ESO - VLT) could substantially contribute to this follow-up efforts, with magnitude limits above all microlensing events detected so far., accepted for publication in A&A Letters

Abstract

This paper reports on the development of a gamma-ray spectroscopic system for the (i) recording and (ii)rocessing of spectra. The utilized data read-out unit consists of a PCI digital oscilloscope, personal computer and LabVIEW™ programming environment. A pulse-height spectra of various sources were recorded with two NaI(Tl) detectors and analyzed, demonstrating the proper usage of the detectors. A multichannel analyzer implements the Gaussian photopeak fitting. The presented method provides results which are in compliance to the ones taken from commercial spectroscopy systems. Each individual hardware or software unit can be further utilized in different spectrometric user-systems. An application of the developed system for research and teaching purposes regarding the design of digital spectrometric systems has been successfully tested at the laboratories of the Department of Experimental Physics. © 2017 European Physical Society.

Abstract

PLATO 2.0 has recently been selected for ESA's M3 launch opportunity (2022/24). Providing accurate key planet parameters (radius, mass, density and age) in statistical numbers, it addresses fundamental questions such as: How do planetary systems form and evolve? Are there other systems with planets like ours, including potentially habitable planets? The PLATO 2.0 instrument consists of 34 small aperture telescopes (32 with 25 sec readout cadence and 2 with 2.5 sec candence) providing a wide field-of-view (2232 deg2) and a large photometric magnitude range (4-16 mag). It focusses on bright (4-11 mag) stars in wide fields to detect and characterize planets down to Earth-size by photometric transits, whose masses can then be determined by ground-based radial-velocity follow-up measurements. Asteroseismology will be performed for these bright stars to obtain highly accurate stellar parameters, including masses and ages. The combination of bright targets and asteroseismology results in high accuracy for the bulk planet parameters: 2%, 4-10% and 10% for planet radii, masses and ages, respectively. The planned baseline observing strategy includes two long pointings (2-3 years) to detect and bulk characterize planets reaching into the habitable zone (HZ) of solar-like stars and an additional step-and-stare phase to cover in total about 50% of the sky. PLATO 2.0 will observe up to 1,000,000 stars and detect and characterize hundreds of small planets, and thousands of planets in the Neptune to gas giant regime out to the HZ. It will therefore provide the first large-scale catalogue of bulk characterized planets with accurate radii, masses, mean densities and ages. This catalogue will include terrestrial planets at intermediate orbital distances, where surface temperatures are moderate. Abstract

An Ar-H2O discharge with Ar content from 0 to 95 % at 67 and 266 Pa have been studied by optical emission spectroscopy. The plasma was excited at 27 MHz by a helical cavity with a power set at 30 W. The rotational temperatures of N2(C3Πu) and OH(A2 Σ + ) emitters were determined through spectral simulations. For added Ar percentages smaller than 95 %, the rotational temperature of N2(C3Πu) state was shown to be constant and equal to the gas temperature with a value of 450 ± 50 K. The effect of energy transfer from argon metastables is probably weak considering the results on the rotational temperature of N2(C3Πu) at 95 % Ar / 5 % H2O. The experimental OH spectra could be fitted only with a two temperatures model; T1= 450 K for both pressures and T2= 15000 K with a contribution of 22 and 32 % for 266 and 67 Pa, respectively, as result of the excitation mechanisms involving electron impact collision with water.
