Abstract: International audience; To preserve the Bitcoin ledger’s integrity, a node that joins the system must download a full copy of the entire Bitcoin blockchain if it wants to verify newly created blocks.At the time of writing, the blockchain weights 79 GiB and takes hours of processing on high-end machines. Owners of low-resource devices (known as thin nodes), such as smartphones, avoid that cost by either opting for minimum verification or by depending on full nodes, which weakens their security model.In this work, we propose to harden the security model of thin nodes by enabling them to verify blocks in an adaptive manner, with regards to the level of targeted confidence, with low storage requirements and a short bootstrap time. Our approach exploits sharding within a distributed hash table (DHT) to distribute the storage load, and a few additional hashes to prevent attacks on this new system.

Abstract: International audience; Gossip protocols have emerged as a powerful technique for implementing highly scalable and robust services, such as information dissemination and aggregation. The fact that gossip protocols require very little or no structure to operate makes them particularly appealing to apply in dynamic systems, where topology changes are common (for instance, due to frequent faults or high churn rates). Therefore, gossip protocols seem particularly well fit to operate in wireless self-organizing networks. Unfortunately, these networks have a number of characteristics that impede the deployment of gossip protocols designed for wired networks. In this work we identify the inherent differences in communication between wired and wireless networks and their impact on the design and implementation of gossip protocols. In particular, our comparison includes drawing a distinction between the gossiping primitives suitable for each of these environments. In the context of this analysis, we conclude by presenting a list of open research questions.

Abstract: International audience; Applications on cloud infrastructures acquire virtual machines (VMs) from providers when necessary. The current interface for acquiring VMs from most providers, however, is too limiting for the tenants, in terms of granularity in which VMs can be acquired (e.g., small, medium, large, etc.), while giving very limited control over their placement. The former leads to VM underutilization, and the latter has performance implications, both translating into higher costs for the tenants. In this work, we leverage nested virtualization and a networking overlay to tackle these problems. We present Kangaroo, an OpenStack-based virtual infrastructure provider, and IPOPsm, a virtual networking switch for communication between nested VMs over different infrastructure VMs. In addition, we design and implement Skippy, the realization of our proposed virtual infrastructure API for programming Kangaroo. Our benchmarks show that through careful mapping of nested VMs to infrastructure VMs, Kangaroo achieves up to an order of magnitude better performance, with only half the cost on Amazon EC2. Further, Kangaroo's unified OpenStack API allows us to migrate an entire application between Amazon EC2 and our local OpenNebula deployment within a few minutes, without any downtime or modification to the application code.

The elasticity and high availability of cloud solutions are attractive features for hosting web applications. In particular, the elasticity is supported through trigger-based provisioning systems that dynamically add/release resources when certain conditions are met. However, when dealing with websites, this operation becomes more problematic, as the workload demand fluctuates following an irregular pattern. An excessive reactiveness turns these systems into imprecise and wasteful in terms of SLA fulfillment and resource consumption. In this paper, we propose three different provisioning techniques that expose the limitations of traditional systems, and overcomes their drawbacks without overly increasing complexity. Our experiments conducted on both public and private infrastructures show significant reductions in SLA violations while offering performance stability.

Abstract: International audience; Improving resource provisioning of heterogeneous cloud infrastructures is an important research challenge. The wide diversity of cloud-based applications and customers with different QoS requirements have recently exhibited the weaknesses of current provisioning systems. Today's cloud infrastructures provide provisioning systems that dynamically adapt the computational power of applications by adding or releasing resources. Unfortunately, these scaling systems are fairly limited: (i) They restrict themselves to a single type of resource; (ii) they are unable to fulfill QoS requirements in face of spiky workload; and (iii) they offer the same QoS level to all their customers, independent of customer preferences such as different levels of service availability and performance. In this paper, we present an autoscaling system that overcomes these limitations by exploiting heterogeneous types of resources, and by defining multiple levels of QoS requirements. The proposed system selects a resource scaling plan according to both workload and customer requirements. Our experiments conducted on both public and private infrastructures show significant reductions in QoS-level violations when faced with highly variable workloads.

Abstract: International audience; Embodied evolutionary robotics is a sub-field of evolutionary robotics that employs evolutionary algorithms on the robotic hardware itself, during the operational period, i.e., in an on-line fashion. This enables robotic systems that continuously adapt, and are therefore capable of (readjusting g themselves to previously unknown or dynamically changing conditions autonomously, without human oversight. This paper addresses one of the major challenges that such systems face, viz. that the robots must satisfy two sets of requirements. Firstly, they must continue to operate reliably in their environment (viability), and secondly they must competently perform user-specified tasks (usefulness). The solution we propose exploits the fact that evolutionary methods have two basic selection mechanisms–survivor selection and parent selection. This allows evolution to tackle the two sets of requirements separately: survivor selection is driven by the environment and parent selection is based on task-performance. This idea is elaborated in the Multi-Objective aNd open-Ended Evolution (MONEE) framework, which we experimentally validate. Experiments with robotic swarms of 100 simulated e-pucks show that MONEE does indeed promote task-driven behaviour without compromising environmental adaptation. We also investigate an extension of the parent selection process with a 'market mechanism' that can ensure equitable distribution of effort over multiple tasks, a particularly pressing issue if the environment promotes specialisation in single tasks.

Abstract: International audience; The OnTheMove 2013 event, held 9-13 September in Graz, Austria, further consolidated the importance of the series of annual conferences that was started in 2002 in Irvine, California. It then moved to Catania, Sicily in 2003, to Cyprus in 2004 and 2005, Montpellier in 2006, Vilamoura in 2007 and 2009, in 2008 to Monterrey, Mexico, to Heraklion, Crete in 2010 and 2011, and to Rome in 2012. This prime event continues to attract a diverse and relevant selection of today's research worldwide on the scientific concepts underlying new computing paradigms, which, of necessity, must be distributed, heterogeneous, and supporting an environment of resources that are autonomous and yet must meaningfully cooperate. Indeed, as such large, complex, and networked intelligent information systems become the focus and norm for computing, there continues to be an acute and even increasing need to address the implied software, system, and enterprise issues and discuss them face to face in an integrated forum that covers methodological, semantic, theoretical, and application issues as well. As we all realize, email, the Internet, and even video conferences are not by themselves optimal nor even sufficient for effective and efficient scientific exchange.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a novel adaptive algorithm to extract facial feature points automatically such as eyebrows corners, eyes corners, nostrils, nose tip, and mouth corners in frontal view faces, which is based on cumulative histogram approach by varying different threshold values. At first, the method adopts the Viola-Jones face detector to detect the location of face and also crops the face region in an image. From the concept of the human face structure, the six relevant regions such as right eyebrow, left eyebrow, right eye, left eye, nose, and mouth areas are cropped in a face image. Then the histogram of each cropped relevant region is computed and its cumulative histogram value is employed by varying different threshold values to create a new filtering image in an adaptive way. The connected component of interested area for each relevant filtering image is indicated our respective feature region. A simple linear search algorithm for eyebrows, eyes and mouth filtering images and contour algorithm for nose filtering image are applied to extract our desired corner points automatically. The method was tested on a large BioID frontal face database in different illuminations, expressions and lighting conditions and the experimental results have achieved average success rates of 95.27%.

Abstract: A new design of a fiber optic Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor using Palladium as a sensitive layer for hydrogen detection is presented. In this approach, a transducer layer is deposited on the outside of a multimode fiber, after removing the optical cladding. The transducer layer is a multilayer stack made of a Silver, a Silica and a Palladium layer. The spectral modulation of the light transmitted by the fiber allows to detect the presence of hydrogen in the environment. The sensor is only sensitive to the Transverse Magnetic polarized light and the Traverse Electric polarized light can be used therefore as a reference signal. A more reliable response is expected for the fiber SPR hydrogen sensor based on spectral modulation instead of on intensity modulation. The multilayer thickness defines the sensor performance. The silica thickness tunes the resonant wavelength, whereas the Silver and Palladium thickness determine the sensor sensitivity. In an optimal configuration (NA = 0.22, 100 μm core radius and transducer length = 1 cm), the resonant wavelength is shifted over 17.6 nm at a concentration of 4% Hydrogen in Argon for the case of the 35 nm Silver/ 100 nm Silica/ 3 nm palladium multilayer.

Abstract: International audience; As model transformations have become an integral part of the automated software engineering lifecycle, reuse, modularisation, and composition of model transformations becomes important. One way to compose model transformations is to compose modules of transformation rules, and execute the composition as one transformation (internal composition). This kind of composition can provide richer semantics, as it is part of the transformation language. This paper aims to generalise two internal composition mechanisms for rule-based transformation languages, module import and rule inheritance, by providing executable semantics for the composition mechanisms within a virtual machine. The generality of the virtual machine is demonstrated for different rule-based transformation languages by compiling those languages to, and executing them on this virtual machine. We will discuss how ATL and graph transformations can be mapped to modules and rules inside the virtual machine.

Abstract: Video-on-demand (VoD) is a next-generation Internet application of increasing interest allowing users to start watching a movie almost instantaneously by downloading the video on-the-fly. Provided that all users contribute to the system, shifting to the P2P paradigm allows efficient broadcast with a limited-bandwidth source. Until now, most P2P VoD systems rely on the willingness of peers to collaborate and only few use incentive mechanisms. In VoD applications pieces are downloaded in order. This prevents to directly apply a BitTorrent-like tit-for-tat incentive scheme. Although existing solutions based on random exchanges have good performance, we advocate the use of structure in P2P VoD applications to achieve high playback rates. In this paper we propose a decentralized piece dissemination scheme built using loosely coupled structures. Peers are grouped into clusters depending on their playback position. Swarming is performed inside the clusters while distributed feeding ensures that less advanced clusters get missing pieces from more advanced ones. Our simulations demonstrate that structured dissemination improves from 61% with the competitor to 77% of the achievable playback rate.

Abstract: Artiﬁcial evolution plays an important role in several robotics projects. Most commonly, an evolutionary algorithm (EA) is used as a heuristic optimiser to solve some engineering problem, for instance an EA is used to ﬁnd good robot controller. In these applications the human designers/experimenters orchestrate and manage the whole evolutionary problem solving process and incorporate the end result –that is, the (near-)optimal solution evolved by the EA– into the system as part of the deployment. During the operational period of the system the EA does not play any further role. In other words, the use of evolution is restricted to the pre-deployment stage. Another, more challenging type of application of evolution is where it serves as the engine behind adaptation during (rather than before) the operational period, without human intervention. In this section we elaborate on possible evolutionary approaches to this kind of applications, position these on a general feature map and test some of these set-ups experimentally to assess their feasibility.

Abstract: We revisit the Near Equidiffusional Flames (NEF) model introduced by Matkowsky and Sivashinsky in 1979 and consider a simplified, quasi-steady version of it. This simplification allows, near the planar front, an explicit derivation of the front equation. The latter is a pseudodifferential fully nonlinear parabolic equation of the fourth-order. First, we study the (orbital) stability of the null solution. Second, introducing a parameter $\varepsilon$, we rescale both the dependent and independent variables and prove rigourously the convergence to the solution of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation as $\varepsilon \to 0$.

Abstract: In this paper we are interested in a rigorous derivation of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation (K--S) in a Free Boundary Problem. As a paradigm, we consider a two-dimensional Stefan problem in a strip, a simplified version of a solid-liquid interface model. Near the instability threshold, we introduce a small parameter $\varepsilon$ and define rescaled variables accordingly. At fixed $\varepsilon$, our method is based on: definition of a suitable linear 1D operator, projection with respect to the longitudinal coordinate only, Lyapunov-Schmidt method. As a solvability condition, we derive a self-consistent parabolic equation for the front. We prove that, starting from the same configuration, the latter remains close to the solution of K--S on a fixed time interval, uniformly in $\varepsilon$ sufficiently small.

20. Semantic Web and Vocabulary Interoperability: an experiment with illumination collections

Abstract: International audience; Semantic search across collections described with heterogeneous metadata is an important problem in the Cultural Heritage field. This paper presents an experiment on enhancing the semantic interoperability of two digital iconographic collections: Mandragore, the iconographic database of the Manuscript Department of the French National Library (BnF), and the Medieval Illuminated manuscripts collection of the National Library of the Netherlands (KB). While the content of these two collections is similar, they have been processed differently. The vocabularies used to index their objects are both controlled and hierarchically organized Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS), but they do not have the same semantics and structure. The experiment presented here started with a precise analysis of each of these vocabularies. Then, each of them was represented in a standard model. This model, namely, SKOS, paves the way for semantic reconciliation of heterogeneous KOSs, on top of the RDF Semantic Web data model. Once this step has been taken, it is possible to use simple automatic techniques for matching the concepts of the two vocabularies at the semantic level, based on their lexical similarities. Finally, a prototype was built that exploits the information contained in the vocabularies and in their alignment, to allow for searching documents in both collections at the same time, using a single set of descriptors as query terms.

Abstract: This paper is dedicated to the memory of Basil Nicolaenko; International audience; We investigate the stability of the travelling wave (TW) solution in a 2D Stefan problem, a simplified version of a solid-liquid interface model. It is intended as a paradigm problem to present our method based on: (i) definition of a suitable linear one dimensional operator, (ii) projection with respect to the $x$ coordinate only; (iii) Lyapunov-Schmidt method. The main issue is that we are able to derive a parabolic equation for the corrugated front $\varphi$ near the TW as a solvability condition. This equation involves two linear pseudo-differential operators, one acting on $\varphi$, the other on $(\varphi_y)^2$ and clearly appears as a generalization of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation related to turbulence phenomena in chemistry and combustion. A large part of the paper is devoted to study the properties of these operators in the context of functional spaces in the $y$ and $x,y$ coordinates with periodic boundary conditions. Abstract: International audience; This paper reports on a feasibility study into the evolution of robot controllers during the actual operation of robots (on-line), using only the computational resources within the robots themselves (on-board). We identify the main challenges that these restrictions imply and propose mechanisms to handle them. The resulting algorithm is evaluated in a hybrid system, using the actual robots' processors interfaced with a simulator that represents the environment. The results show that the proposed algorithm is indeed feasible and the particular problems we encountered during this study give hints for further research.

Abstract: International audience; Core specialization is currently one of the most promising ways for designing power-efficient multicore chips. However, approaching the theoretical peak performance of such heterogeneous multicore architectures with specialized accelerators, is a complex issue. While substantial effort has been devoted to efficiently offloading parts of the computation, designing an execution model that unifies all computing units is the main challenge. We therefore designed the StarPU runtime system for providing portable support for heterogeneous multicore processors to high performance applications and compiler environments. StarPU provides a high-level, unified execution model which is tightly coupled to an expressive data management library. In addition to our previous results on using multicore processors alongside with graphic processors, we show that StarPU is flexible enough to efficiently exploit the heterogeneous resources in the Cell processor. We present a scalable design supporting multiple different accelerators while minimizing the overhead on the overall system. Using experiments with classical linear algebra algorithms, we show that StarPU improves programmability and provides performance portability.

Abstract: International audience; MINIX 3 is a microkernel-based, multiserver operating system for uniprocessors that is designed to be highly dependable. Servers are restricted according to the principle of least privilege. For example, access to resources such as system memory and device I/O is fully protected. Although MINIX 3 is a potential candidate for embedded platforms, it currently cannot safeguard processes with stringent timing requirements, such as real-time applications. In this paper, we present the design and the implementation of a user-space resource-reservation framework (RRES) in order to augment MINIX 3's dependability infrastructure with temporal protection. In particular, we implemented the Constant Bandwidth Server (CBS), either in Soft or in Hard Reservation (CBS-HR) mode and the Idle-time Reclaiming Improved Server (IRIS) resource reservation algorithms. Important, practical applications of temporal protection include real-time computing as well as prevention of certain denial of service (DoS) attacks that monopolize the CPU. Experiments on a prototype implementation showed improved dependability in the temporal domain.

Ce projet, à travers des expériences concrètes, explore l'axe sémantique de la recherche. Comment effectuer des recherches sémantiques simultanées à travers plusieurs collections patrimoniales numériques ? Les métadonnées ayant trait à l'analyse du contenu sont souvent hétérogènes. Outre l'exploitation des méthodes de mise en correspondance manuelle des entités sémantiquement comparables, STITCH explore les techniques du web sémantique, notamment l'alignement d'ontologies. Cette présentation porte sur l'expérience qui a été menée sur deux collections iconographiques numériques, Mandragore, base iconographique du département des Manuscrits de la Bibliothèque nationale de France et la Collection d'enluminures de la Bibliothèque royale des Pays-Bas. Les contenus des deux collections sont comparables mais le traitement documentaire et les vocabulaires utilisés pour l'indexation de leurs contenus sont très différents. Les deux vocabulaires Mandragore et Iconclass sont certes contrôlés et hiérarchisés mais ils diffèrent dans leur sémantique et dans leur structure. C'est précisément cette différence qui a intéressé le projet STITCH qui vise à étudier l'alignement automatique des deux vocabulaires. L'expérience collaborative a démarré avec l'analyse fine de chacun des vocabulaires : les concepts et leur représentation, les propriétés lexicales des termes, les relations sémantiques, etc. L'équipe de chercheurs néerlandais a ensuite étudié et mis en place des mécanismes d'alignement des deux vocabulaires. Les modèles d'origine étant différents, une conversion dans un formalisme pivot (standard commun) était nécessaire pour engager ensuite les procédures d'alignement. C'est le RDF / SKOS qui a été utilisé. L'expérience a abouti à la réalisation d'un prototype qui permet une interrogation simultanée des deux bases à partir d'une même interface. Les descripteurs de chacun des deux vocabulaires servent de termes de requête sur l'ensemble des images appartenant indifféremment à l'une ou l'autre des deux collections. Cette expérience n'est qu'une étape dans la recherche de solutions visant à faciliter la navigation entre les collections patrimoniales dont les métadonnées sont hétérogènes.

Abstract: International audience; Gossip-based mechanisms are touted for their simplicity, limited resource usage, robustness to failures, and tunable system behavior. These qualities make gossiping an ideal mechanism for storage systems that are responsible for maintaining and updating data in a mist of failures and limited resources (e.g., intermittent network connectivity, limited bandwidth, constrained communication range, or limited battery power). We focus on persistent storage systems that, unlike mere caches, are responsible for both the durability and the consistency of data. Examples of such systems may be encountered in many different environments, in particular: wide-area networks (constrained by limited bandwidth), wireless sensor networks (characterized by limited resources), and mobile ad hoc networks (suffering from intermittent connectivity). In this paper, we demonstrate the qualities of gossiping in these three respective environments.

Abstract: We report on the implementation of Pd-capped chemo-chromic metal hydrides as a sensing layer in fiber optic hydrogen detectors. Due to the change in optical properties of Mg-based alloys on hydrogen absorption, a drop in reflectance by a factor of 10 is demonstrated at hydrogen levels down to 15% of the lower explosion limit. The switching takes place in only a few seconds. Comparing Mg–Ni and Mg–Ti based alloys, we find that the latter has superior optical and switching properties. Using a 50 nm thick Mg 70 Ti 30 film capped with a 30 nm Pd catalytic layer as the sensing layer, we report on the sensitivity of the fiber optic detector for hydrogen both in argon and oxygen, the temperature behavior and the reversibility.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents an MPI implementation that allows an easy and efficient use of the interconnection of several clusters, of potentially heterogeneous nature (as far as the network is concerned). We describe the underlying communication subsystem used. The mechanisms within MPI that inform the user of the underlying topological structure are detailed. The performance figures obtained with this MPI implementation are discussed and advocate for the use of such a solution on this particular type of architecture.

31. A Framework for Applying Natural Language Processing in Digital Health Interventions.

Abstract: Background: Digital health interventions (DHIs) are poised to reduce target symptoms in a scalable, affordable, and empirically supported way. DHIs that involve coaching or clinical support often collect text data from 2 sources: (1) open correspondence between users and the trained practitioners supporting them through a messaging system and (2) text data recorded during the intervention by users, such as diary entries. Natural language processing (NLP) offers methods for analyzing text, augmenting the understanding of intervention effects, and informing therapeutic decision making., Objective: This study aimed to present a technical framework that supports the automated analysis of both types of text data often present in DHIs. This framework generates text features and helps to build statistical models to predict target variables, including user engagement, symptom change, and therapeutic outcomes., Methods: We first discussed various NLP techniques and demonstrated how they are implemented in the presented framework. We then applied the framework in a case study of the Healthy Body Image Program, a Web-based intervention trial for eating disorders (EDs). A total of 372 participants who screened positive for an ED received a DHI aimed at reducing ED psychopathology (including binge eating and purging behaviors) and improving body image. These users generated 37,228 intervention text snippets and exchanged 4285 user-coach messages, which were analyzed using the proposed model., Results: We applied the framework to predict binge eating behavior, resulting in an area under the curve between 0.57 (when applied to new users) and 0.72 (when applied to new symptom reports of known users). In addition, initial evidence indicated that specific text features predicted the therapeutic outcome of reducing ED symptoms., Conclusions: The case study demonstrates the usefulness of a structured approach to text data analytics. NLP techniques improve the prediction of symptom changes in DHIs. 32. App-Based Intervention Combining Evidence-Based Behavior Change Techniques With a Model-Based Reasoning System to Promote Physical Activity Among Young Adults (Active2Gether): Descriptive Study of the Development and Content.

Abstract: Background: The Active2Gether intervention is an app-based intervention designed to help and encourage young adults to become and remain physically active by means of personalized, real-time activity tracking and context-specific feedback., Objective: The objective of our study was to describe the development and content of the Active2Gether intervention for physical activity promotion., Methods: A systematic and stepwise approach was used to develop the Active2Gether intervention. This included formulating objectives and a theoretical framework, selecting behavior change techniques, specifying the tailoring, pilot testing, and describing an evaluation protocol., Results: The development of the Active2Gether intervention comprised seven steps: analyzing the (health) problem, developing a program framework, writing (tailored) messages, developing tailoring assessments, developing the Active2Gether intervention, pilot testing, and testing and evaluating the intervention. The primary objective of the intervention was to increase the total time spent in moderate-vigorous physical activity for those who do not meet the Dutch guideline, maintain physical activity levels of those who meet the guideline, or further increase physical activity levels if they so indicated. The theoretical framework is informed by the social cognitive theory, and insights from other theories and evidence were added for specific topics. Development of the intervention content and communication channel resulted in the development of an app that provides highly tailored coaching messages that are framed in an autonomy-supportive style. These coaching messages include behavior change techniques aiming to address relevant behavioral determinants (eg, self-efficacy and outcome expectations) and are partly context specific. A model-based reasoning engine has been developed to tailor the intervention with respect to the type of support provided by the app, send relevant and context-specific messages to the user, and tailor the graphs displayed in the app. For the input of the tailoring, different instruments and sensors are used, such as an activity monitor (Fitbit One), Web-based and mobile questionnaires, and the location services on the user's mobile phone., Conclusions: The systematic and stepwise approach resulted in an intervention that is based on theory and input from end users. Abstract: Background: We aimed to identify HBc amino acid differences between subgroups of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients., Methods: Deep sequencing of HBc was performed in samples of 89 CHB patients (42 HBeAg positive, 47 HBeAg negative). Amino acid types were compared using Sequence Harmony to identify subgroup specific sites between HBeAg-positive and -negative patients, and between patients with combined response and non-response to peginterferon/adefovir combination therapy., Results: We identified 54 positions in HBc where the frequency of appearing amino acids was significantly different between HBeAg-positive and -negative patients. In HBeAg negative patients, 22 positions in HBc were identified which differed between patients with treatment response and those with non-response. The fraction non-consensus sequence on selected positions was significantly higher in HBeAg-negative patients, and was negatively correlated with HBV DNA and HBsAg levels., Conclusions: Sequence Harmony identified a number of amino acid changes associated with HBeAg-status and response to peginterferon/adefovir combination therapy., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. 34. Deep Learning to Predict Falls in Older Adults Based on Daily-Life Trunk Accelerometry.

Abstract: Early detection of high fall risk is an essential component of fall prevention in older adults. Wearable sensors can provide valuable insight into daily-life activities; biomechanical features extracted from such inertial data have been shown to be of added value for the assessment of fall risk. Body-worn sensors such as accelerometers can provide valuable insight into fall risk. Currently, biomechanical features derived from accelerometer data are used for the assessment of fall risk. Here, we studied whether deep learning methods from machine learning are suited to automatically derive features from raw accelerometer data that assess fall risk. We used an existing dataset of 296 older adults. We compared the performance of three deep learning model architectures (convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM) and a combination of these two (ConvLSTM)) to each other and to a baseline model with biomechanical features on the same dataset. The results show that the deep learning models in a single-task learning mode are strong in recognition of identity of the subject, but that these models only slightly outperform the baseline method on fall risk assessment. When using multi-task learning, with gender and age as auxiliary tasks, deep learning models perform better. We also found that preprocessing of the data resulted in the best performance (AUC = 0.75). We conclude that deep learning models, and in particular multi-task learning, effectively assess fall risk on the basis of wearable sensor data.

35. Predictive modeling of colorectal cancer using a dedicated pre-processing pipeline on routine electronic medical records.

Abstract: Over the past years, research utilizing routine care data extracted from Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) has increased tremendously. Yet there are no straightforward, standardized strategies for pre-processing these data. We propose a dedicated medical pre-processing pipeline aimed at taking on many problems and opportunities contained within EMR data, such as their temporal, inaccurate and incomplete nature. The pipeline is demonstrated on a dataset of routinely recorded data in general practice EMRs of over 260,000 patients, in which the occurrence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is predicted using various machine learning techniques (i.e., CART, LR, RF) and subsets of the data. CRC is a common type of cancer, of which early detection has proven to be important yet challenging. The results are threefold. First, the predictive models generated using our pipeline reconfirmed known predictors and identified new, medically plausible, predictors derived from the cardiovascular and metabolic disease domain, validating the pipeline's effectiveness. Second, the difference between the best model generated by the data-driven subset (AUC 0.891) and the best model generated by the current state of the art hypothesis-driven subset (AUC 0.864) is statistically significant at the 95% confidence interval level. Third, the pipeline itself is highly generic and independent of the specific disease targeted and the EMR used. In conclusion, the application of established machine learning techniques in combination with the proposed pipeline on EMRs has great potential to enhance disease prediction, and hence early detection and intervention in medical practice., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
