Abstract: Most organisms adjust their development according to the environmental conditions. For the majority, this implies the sensing of alterations to cell walls caused by different cues. Despite the relevance of this process, few molecular players involved in cell wall sensing are known and characterized. Here, we show that the wall-associated kinase-like protein RESISTANCE TO FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM 1 (RFO1) is required for plant growth and early defense against Fusarium oxysporum and functions by sensing changes in the pectin methylation levels in the cell wall. The RFO1 dwell time at the plasma membrane is affected by the pectin methylation status at the cell wall, regulating MITOGEN-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASE and gene expression. We show that the extracellular domain of RFO1 binds de-methylated pectin in vitro, whose distribution in the cell wall is altered during F. oxysporum infection. Further analyses also indicate that RFO1 is required for the BR-dependent plant growth alteration in response to inhibition of pectin de-methyl-esterase activity at the cell wall. Abstract: The enhanced seasonal amplitude of atmospheric CO2 has been viewed so far primarily as a Northern Hemisphere phenomenon. Yet, analyses of atmospheric CO2 records from 49 stations between 1980 and 2018 reveal substantial trends and variations in this amplitude globally. While no significant trends can be discerned before 2000 in most places, strong positive trends emerge after 2000 in the southern high latitudes. Using factorial simulations with an atmospheric transport model and analyses of surface ocean Pco2 observations, we show that the increase is best explained by the onset of increasing seasonality of air-sea CO2 exchange over the Southern Ocean around 2000. Underlying these changes is the long-term ocean acidification trend that tends to enhance the seasonality of the air-sea fluxes, but this trend is modified by the decadal variability of the Southern Ocean carbon sink. The seasonal variations of atmospheric CO2 thus emerge as a sensitive recorder of the variations of the Southern Ocean carbon sink., Science Advances, 8 (41), ISSN:2375-2548

A global synthesis of raw seedproduction data shows a 250-fold increase in seed abundance from cold-dry to warm-wet climates, driven primarily by a 100-fold increase in seed production for a given tree size. The modest (threefold) increase in forest productivity across the same climate gradient cannot explain the magnitudes of these trends. The increase in seeds per tree can arise from adaptive evolution driven by intense species interactions or from the direct effects of a warm, moist climate on tree fecundity. The term “reworking” involves the re-insertion of crustal material into pre-existing crustal volumes, while crustal growth and recycling respectively represent gains from and losses to the mantle. Reworking that occurs in the mantle wedge (“source” contamination from slab material) or within the upper plate (“path” contamination), will have contrasting effects on crustal evolution. However, due to limited access to deep crustal and mantle rocks, quantifying source vs. path contamination remains challenging. Based on the 4-dimensional record of the fossil (Ordovician) Famatinian continental arc (Argentina), we demonstrate that source contamination plays a dominant role in imprinting mafic to granitic rocks with crustal oxygen-hafnium (O-Hf) isotopic compositions. We argue that source contamination at convergent plate margins significantly increased the diversity of O-Hf isotopic signatures of continents over geologic time. Abstract: State-of-the-art 2D image compression schemes rely on the power of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Although CNNs offer promising perspectives for 2D image compression, extending such models to omnidirectional images is not straightforward. First, omnidirectional images have specific spatial and statistical properties that can not be fully captured by current CNN models. Second, basic mathematical operations composing a CNN architecture, e.g., translation and sampling, are not well-defined on the sphere. In this paper, we study the learning of representation models for omnidirectional images and propose to use the properties of HEALPix uniform sampling of the sphere to redefine the mathematical tools used in deep learning models for omnidirectional images. In particular, we: i) propose the definition of a new convolution operation on the sphere that keeps the high expressiveness and the low complexity of a classical 2D convolution; ii) adapt standard CNN techniques such as stride, iterative aggregation, and pixel shuffling to the spherical domain; and then iii) apply our new framework to the task of omnidirectional image compression. Our experiments show that our proposed on-the-sphere solution leads to a better compression gain that can save 13.7% of the bit rate compared to similar learned models applied to equirectangular images. Also, compared to learning models based on graph convolutional networks, our solution supports more expressive filters that can preserve high frequencies and provide a better perceptual quality of the compressed images. Abstract: We performed apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He dating on a granitic pluton that has been offset by ∼10 km by motion on the sinistral strike-slip Xiangcheng fault in SW Sichuan, SE Tibetan plateau, where the Shuoqu River incises a deep valley before joining the upper Yangtze River. Mean ZHe cooling ages range from 49.5 ± 2.2 Ma to 68.6 ± 6.0 Ma. Samples located above 3870 m yield mean apatite (U-Th)/He ages ranging from 30.6 ± 1.4 Ma to 40.6 ± 2.7 Ma, whereas samples at lower elevations range from 9.8 ± 1.3 Ma to 14.6 ± 2.7 Ma. In the same region, Cenozoic continental sediments are exposed on the flanks of deep valleys. They consist of unsorted conglomerates and sandstones that partly fill a paleotopography. The sediments were deposited during an episode of rapid sedimentation, followed by incision that varies between 0.5 and 1.2 km. Thermal and exhumational modeling of the granite thermochronometric data indicates rapid cooling during the middle Miocene that was likely related to fluvial incision. Our findings suggest that the upper Yangtze River and its tributary (Shuoqu) were connected by the middle Miocene. Our modeling also supports the idea that the exhumation pattern during the Cenozoic in the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is spatially and temporally heterogeneous.

Abstract: Short-duration (1–3 h) rainfall extremes can cause serious damage to societies through rapidly developing (flash) flooding and are determined by complex, multifaceted processes that are altering as Earth’s climate warms. In this Review, we examine evidence from observational, theoretical and modelling studies for the intensification of these rainfall extremes, the drivers and the impact on flash flooding. Both short-duration and long-duration (>1 day) rainfall extremes are intensifying with warming at a rate consistent with the increase in atmospheric moisture (~7% K−1), while in some regions, increases in short-duration extreme rainfall intensities are stronger than expected from moisture increases alone. These stronger local increases are related to feedbacks in convective clouds, but their exact role is uncertain because of the very small scales involved. Future extreme rainfall intensification is also modulated by changes to temperature stratification and large-scale atmospheric circulation. The latter remains a major source of uncertainty. Intensification of short-duration extremes has likely increased the incidence of flash flooding at local scales, and this can further compound with an increase in storm spatial footprint to considerably increase total event rainfall. These findings call for urgent climate change adaptation measures to manage increasing flood risks. Short-duration rainfall extremes are determined by complex processes that are affected by the warming climate. This Review assesses the evidence for the intensification of short-duration rainfall extremes, the associated drivers and the implications for flood risks.

Abstract: The oldest geological materials on Earth are Hadean (>4 Ga) detrital zircon grains. Their chemistry and apparently low Ti-in-zircon temperatures (≤700 °C) are considered to be inconsistent with crystallization in a magma of the tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) suite, although these are the dominant Archean (4.0–2.5 Ga) silicic rocks. Using a new data set of trace element contents in zircons from Paleoarchean Barberton TTGs (South Africa) and thermodynamic modeling, we show that these zircons have crystallized at near-solidus conditions from a compositionally uniform granitic melt. This melt is residual from the crystallization of a less evolved (tonalitic) parent and thereby shows major and trace element compositions different from bulk TTG rocks. A global compilation reveals that most Hadean detrital and Archean TTG-hosted grains share a peculiar zircon trace element signature that is distinct from the chemical trends defined by Phanerozoic zircons. Our model shows that the low Ti contents of early Earth zircons reflect crystallization at higher temperatures (720–800 °C) than initially inferred due to lower modeled TiO2 activity in the melt relative to previous estimates. We therefore propose that near-solidus zircon crystallization from a chemically evolved melt in a TTG-like magmatic environment was the dominant zircon-forming process on the early Earth.

Abstract: Continental-scale chemical weathering budgets are commonly assessed based on the flux of dissolved elements carried by large rivers to the oceans. However, the interaction between sediments and seawater in estuaries can lead to additional cation exchange fluxes that have been very poorly constrained so far. We constrained the magnitude of cation exchange fluxes from the Ganga–Brahmaputra river system based on cation exchange capacity (CEC) measurements of riverine sediments. CEC values of sediments are variable throughout the river water column as a result of hydrological sorting of minerals with depth that control grain sizes and surface area. The average CEC of the integrated sediment load of the Ganga–Brahmaputra is estimated ca. 6.5 meq 100 g−1. The cationic charge of sediments in the river is dominated by bivalent ions Ca2+ (76 %) and Mg2+ (16 %) followed by monovalent K+ (6 %) and Na+ (2 %), and the relative proportion of these ions is constant among all samples and both rivers. Assuming a total exchange of exchangeable Ca2+ for marine Na+ yields a maximal additional Ca2+ flux of 28 × 109 mol yr−1 of calcium to the ocean, which represents an increase of ca. 6 % of the actual river dissolved Ca2+ flux. In the more likely event that only a fraction of the adsorbed riverine Ca2+ is exchanged, not only for marine Na+ but also Mg2+ and K+, estuarine cation exchange for the Ganga–Brahmaputra is responsible for an additional Ca2+ flux of 23 × 109 mol yr−1, while ca. 27 × 109 mol yr−1 of Na+, 8 × 109 mol yr−1 of Mg2+ and 4 × 109 mol yr−1 of K+ are re-absorbed in the estuaries. This represents an additional riverine Ca2+ flux to the ocean of 5 % compared to the measured dissolved flux. About 15 % of the dissolved Na+ flux, 8 % of the dissolved K+ flux and 4 % of the Mg2+ are reabsorbed by the sediments in the estuaries. The impact of estuarine sediment–seawater cation exchange appears to be limited when evaluated in the context of the long-term carbon cycle and its main effect is the sequestration of a significant fraction of the riverine Na flux to the oceans. The limited exchange fluxes of the Ganga–Brahmaputra relate to the lower than average CEC of its sediment load that do not counterbalance the high sediment flux to the oceans. This can be attributed to the nature of Himalayan river sediment such as low proportion of clays and organic matter.

Abstract: International audience; Stable isotopic studies (H and O) have been continuously performing from the major large rivers like Kosi and Narayani as well as their small tributaries to understand the water cycle from yearly isotopic record in relation with direct precipitation. Here we present a set of data, mostly from the southern Himalayan flank, including daily sampling of rivers in Narayanghat, Khudi, Marshyandi, Trisuli and Kosi as well as precipitation water data since the pre-Gorkha Earthquake (Mw 7.8) of 25 April 2015. For the precipitation at a given location, data are marked by strong seasonal contrast (e.g. Zhang et al. 2001, Gajurel et al. 2006) probably related to source of moisture and amount effect.Strong seasonality in oxygen isotopic composition of river water (4-5‰) in the catchment of Narayani River in the Himalaya in 2010 is recorded. In contrast, the composition evolves much more stable with a slight tendency to increase during the monsoon in 2015. The Kosi data set of 2015 shows a variation in δ18Osmow from -12‰ to -8‰, and for the δDSMOW from -80‰ to -50‰ (Fig. 1). The data set situated on line δD = 7.7 × δ18O + 7.7‰) is close to the GMWL. The seasonal trend in δ18O generates an offset particularly between June-July and August that influence on river isotopic composition. The river isotopic compositions are progressively depleted in heavy isotopes during the monsoon reflecting the seasonal evolution of precipitation, however, it is buffered by the ground water reservoir. At the beginning and end of the monsoon, the contrast between precipitation and ground water is large and precipitation events generate scattered river variations depending on direct runoff to ground water supply, however, such trend is not always observed particularly after 2015 Gorkha earthquake.

Abstract: The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. Abstract: 11th International Conference on Position Sensitive Detectors (PSD11),3–8 sept. 2017, The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK.; International audience; Beam test results of the radiation tolerance study of chemical vapour deposition (CVD) diamond against different particle species and energies is presented. We also present beam test results on the independence of signal size on incident particle rate in charged particle detectors based on un-irradiated and irradiated poly-crystalline CVD diamond over a range of particle fluxes from 2 kHz/cm2 to 10 MHz/cm2. The pulse height of the sensors was measured with readout electronics with a peaking time of 6 ns. In addition functionality of poly-crystalline CVD diamond 3D devices was demonstrated in beam tests and 3D diamond detectors are shown to be a promising technology for applications in future high luminosity experiments.

Abstract: Helium isotope analyses are central to modern earth science and measured by many noble gas laboratories around the globe (Burnard, 2013; Wieler et al., 2002), spanning a wide spectrum of fundamental research – from identifying primordial reservoirs in the Earth mantle to paleoclimate reconstructions. The CRONUS-Earth initiative included the manufacturing, distribution and analysis of a pyroxene reference material (CRONUS-P) that was designed to be useful for internal reliability control of 3 He measurements within a few percent and potentially for 4 He on a higher level of uncertainty. This short paper describes the CRONUS-P material and its performance as 3 He and 4 He reference sample for noble gas laboratories. The companion paper by Blard et al. 2015 describes in depth the inter-laboratory helium isotope experiment within CRONUS-Earth. We show normalized helium isotope data of CRONUS-P measured at three different noble gas laboratories. Data from all three laboratories show no relation between helium isotope concentrations and sample mass, implying that the material is homogeneous. The data show that CRONUS-P is useful as an internal standard for 3 He within better 2% (1 σ ) and for 4 He within better 10%.

Abstract: Outside In Acquisition and analysis of large data sets promises to move us toward a greater understanding of the mechanisms by which biological systems are dynamically regulated to respond to external cues. Now, two papers explore the responses of a bacterium to changing nutritional conditions (see the Perspective by Chalancon et al. ). Nicolas et al. (p. 1103 ) measured transcriptional regulation for more than 100 different conditions. Greater amounts of antisense RNA were generated than expected and appeared to be produced by alternative RNA polymerase targeting subunits called sigma factors. One transition, from malate to glucose as the primary nutrient, was studied in more detail by Buescher et al. (p. 1099 ) who monitored RNA abundance, promoter activity in live cells, protein abundance, and absolute concentrations of intracellular and extracellular metabolites. In this case, the bacteria responded rapidly and largely without transcriptional changes to life on malate, but only slowly adapted to use glucose, a shift that required changes in nearly half the transcription network. These data offer an initial understanding of why certain regulatory strategies may be favored during evolution of dynamic control systems.

(eds) Tectonics of Western Himalaya & Karakoram; International audience; Ductile strain localisation commonly forms a pattern of shear zones anastomosing around lenses of less deformed rock. Initiation and development history of anastomosing shear zones, which are little documented, are studied through the description of the structures and the deformation history of plutonic rocks that form the lower crust of the Kohistan Complex. Structures and textures developed in these rocks result from primary magmatic to solid state regional strain overprinted by anastomosing shear zones. The primary strain was mainly acquired during magmatic emplacement at 100-90 Ma. Strain localisation took place continuously from magmatic emplacement to solid state deformation during cooling of the plutons and formed 3 successive sets of shear zones. Set 1 is composed of associated discrete Riedel and thrust shear zones developed above solidus conditions during SW-ward thrusting. Continuous deformation from solidus to amphibolite facies conditions between 100 and 83 Ma formed the second set of shear zones. The lower amphibolite facies set 3 shear zones are differentiated by larger strain recorded in the thicker mylonitic zones and enlargement of the spacing between shear zones during cooling. The anastomosing pattern of shear zones described here probably represents arc-related deformation during subduction of the Tethys oceanic lithosphere below the Kohistan Arc Complex.

Abstract: International audience; We estimated the water fugacity (fH(2)O) in the trachytic magma of Phlegrean Fields using the biotite-magnetite-sanidine equilibrium. We confirm that the partly ionic model is the most appropriate to estimate annite activity (a(annite)) for the experimental biotite. Crystallization experiments were carried out on a representative sample of trachytic Breccia Museo eruption, Naples, Italy. Experiments were performed in the temperature and pressure range or 725-870 degrees C and 50-200 MPa, and redox conditions ranging from NNO (nickel- nickel oxide) + 1 (+/- 0.2) to FMQ (fayalite + magnetite + quartz). Most experiments were done under conditions of H2O saturation (P-water = P-total). Few experiments were done using a mixed H2O-CO2 fluid phase. The pre-eruptive fH(2)O of the Phlegrean Fields magma is estimated at 735 bars, which compares well with available melt inclusion constraints. Our results confirm that this geohygrometer can be used in any magmatic systems bearing the worked assemblage.

Abstract: International audience; In this comment we discuss the approach used and the significance of Ar-Ar dating of synkinematic phengite within low-grade Alpine shear zones, and we comment the geodynamic models that can be derived from this method. The paper by Leloup et al. [2005] is a good step forward in the tectonic comprehension of the Mont Blanc area and provides a good synthesis of preexisting data. Leloup et al. [2005] have proposed a polyphase Alpine history for the Mont Blanc Massif (west Alps) based on a multidisciplinary approach: Ar-Ar on biotite for the higher pressure-temperature events of the Mont Blanc, and Ar-Ar on K-feldspar, fission tracks (FT) on zircon and apatite for its later exhumation stages. However, at this point of our knowledge of Alpine deformation in the Mont Blanc Range, the polyphased tectonic evolution, in particular the timing of thrust and back thrust events are not in agreement with recently obtained Ar-Ar data.

Abstract: We discuss the significance of igneous layering with respect to pluton growth processes. The case study is the Tarcouate Laccolith (Morocco), whose core consists of modally layered hornblende granodiorites with high amount of monzodioritic enclaves, contrasting with peripheral, non-layered biotite granodiorites with low amount of enclaves. Rhythmic layering, with modal grading, cross-stratification and trough layering is associated with monzodioritic layers and wraps around mafic enclaves. Its steep dips ≥ 45° result from tilting that occurred above solidus conditions, as indicated by sub-vertical and synmagmatic granite, aplite and monzodiorite dykes cutting across the layering. The systematic association of igneous layering with mafic enclaves in calc-alkaline plutons suggests that layering originates from recurrent injection of mafic magma. Viscosity calculations suggest that the physicochemical properties of magma alone cannot account for the presence of layering in the central hornblende granodiorite and its coeval absence in the peripheral biotite granodiorite of the Tarcouate Laccolith. Intermittent pulses of hot mafic magma into crystallizing granodiorite likely produced thermal perturbations able to trigger local convection, formation of mafic enclaves and development of igneous layering through protracted crystallization.

Abstract: International audience; Shear structures from mantle to middle crust levels of the Kohistan palaeo-island arc, in Pakistan, are described. Pre-Himalayan ductile shear zones show a wide variety in size and shape, and developed from gabbro subsolidus to amphibolite facies conditions. Their lithological context and geological history give insights into mechanisms that initiate shear strain localization, factors that control stabilization of deformation in shear zones and flow properties at the mantle–crust transition. Shear strain localization began within compositional gradients. Gabbros were more prone to localization into anastomosing patterns than diorites and granites, which show more homogeneous strain. Shear strain localization during cooling led to less numerous but longer and thicker shear zones. Viscous heating within shear zones resulted in melt production and segregation in deformation structures, and seems to have taken part in the plutonic history of the arc. Using Kohistan as an example, we suggest that the plutonic, lower crust of arcs is strongly affected by subhorizontal, synmagmatic shear zones, probably consistent with the bulk flow direction of the subduction zone. These features can obviously be preserved in collision orogens and may be mistaken for structures documenting the continental collision.

Abstract: International audience; Anastomosing shear zones exposed in the lower crust of the Kohistan palaeoisland arc in Pakistan have parageneses indicating increasing pressure during deformation. Therefore, they represent a rare example of strain localization during crustal thickening. We investigated the seismic properties of a sheared gabbro with constant bulk chemistry across one of these shear zones. The compressional wave velocity was measured at confining pressures of up to 0.5 GPa and temperatures of up to 600 8C. The density, the average Vp (compressional P-wave velocity) and the acoustic impedance at room temperature increase from the undeformed protolith through the strain gradient to the intensely sheared mylonite. The seismic anisotropy is largest for the strain gradient. The Vp dependence of the velocities on temperature is much higher in the mylonite than in the protolith. The acoustic impedance contrast between protolith and mylonite is high enough to generate seismic reflections at low temperatures, but not at high temperatures. This suggests that the seismic reflectivity may also depend on the temperature. Consequently, ductile shear zones can be detected in reflection profiles of crusts with low geothermal gradients, and may be transparent in crusts with high geothermal gradients.

Abstract: Strain localisation in near paleo-Moho metagabbros of the Kohistan Arc Complex, N-Pakistan, produced anastomosing shear zones. Strain gradients formed by passive simple shear of the magmatic assemblage (minimum gamma=7) combined with an apparent volume loss (about 50%). Major and trace elements analyses of the protolith gabbro and the mylonite indicate isochemical conditions. The pargasite-garnet assemblage of the mylonite has a density 2.8% higher than the protolith, which is insufficient to account for the measured volume loss. Average Vp and acoustic impedance measured at room temperature and up to 300 MPa increase from protolith through the gradient zone to mylonite, and are consistent with density measurements. The orthorhombic symmetry of the 3D Shape Preferred Orientation (SPO) and the Lattice Preferred Orientation (LPO) of pargasitic amphiboles combined with isochemical conditions and apparent volume loss in sections normal to the vorticity vector are best interpreted by sideways material transfer and strain variations at borders of the protolith lenses. Deformation sub-phases result from local changes in the direction of incremental strain axes during a single shear event. The complex, locally spinning flow pattern does not directly reflect the regional shear deformation but instead the relative displacement and/or rotation between comparatively stiff lenses. This complexity is likely representative of deep crustal flow in other tectonic environments.

Abstract: Continental thickening can be associated at depth with strain localization into anas- tomosing shear zones. These shear zones, formed during metamorphism, are often obliterated by later thermal and tectonic events possibly related with the exhumation of mountain roots under retrograde conditions. Anastomosing shear zones exposed in the lower crust of the Kohistan arc, in Pakistan, are rather exceptional because they have parageneses indicating increasing pressure during progressive deformation. We investigated their seismic properties on rock samples with constant bulk chem- istry. The compressional wave velocity was experimentally determined at high con- fining pressure and temperature. We observed that density, average Vp and acoustic impedance increased from the protoliths through a gradient zone to the mylonitic rock, whilst seismic anisotropy reached a maximum in the gradient zone. These findings will be presented and discussed in terms of reflectivity of the lower crust in collision zones.

Abstract: The rotation behaviour of rigid particles from a wide range of symmetry classes was analysed in a series of three-dimensional analogue experiments, in which the particles were embedded in a transparent linear–viscous matrix deformed to large shear strains. Comparison of the measured trajectories with theoretical periodic paths for rigid ellipsoids shows that quadratic, slightly orthorhombic and monoclinic particles have trajectory paths and rotation rates closest to theory. Orthorhombic and monoclinic particles, with a minimum aspect ratio >1.5, develop non-periodic trajectories. The results establish that the simplified theoretical model for ellipsoidal forms is a good approximation for a wide range of natural particle shapes. The relationship between the rotation of a rigid particle and deformation of the adjacent matrix was also determined in a series of experiments by placing the particle at different depths relative to an imprinted grid. The results are well illustrated by the surface passing through the centre of the particle and initially parallel to the shear plane. Two deformed regions in the matrix are recognised. In the first region, the matrix rotates with the particle, together forming an approximately ellipsoidal object. The second region is dominated by folds, of limited extent along the rotation axis and greatest extent in a direction that rotates asymptotically toward the shear direction. The folds rotate more slowly than the principal direction of maximum finite stretch.
