No Phlebotomine sandflies had ever been reported in the Comoros Archipelago, including the three islands of the Republic of the Union of Comoros (Grande Comore, Mohéli and Anjouan) and the French oversea department of Mayotte. During three field surveys carried out in 2003, 2007 and 2011, we provided the first record of Phlebotomine sandflies in this area. A total of 85 specimens belonging to three species were caught: a new species S. (Vattieromyia) pessoni n. sp. (two females from Grande Comore), a new subspecies of Sergentomyia (Rondanomyia) goodmani (80 specimens from Grande Comore and one from Anjouan) and Grassomyia sp. (two females from Mohéli). The individualisation of these taxa was inferred both from morphological criteria and sequencing of a part of the cytochrome b of the mitochondrial DNA. These taxa are closely related to Malagasy sandflies.

La description en 1998 de Phlebotomus riouxi a posé le problème de la diagnose différentielle délicate de la femelle avec celle d’une espèce affine : P. chabaudi. Le rôle suspecté de P. chabaudi dans la transmission de Leishmania killicki dans certains foyers tunisiens nous a amené, à partir de 37 spécimens algériens et tunisiens, à effectuer la caractérisation moléculaire de ces deux taxons. Les séquences du gène du cytochrome b (cyt b) de l’ADN mitochondrial individualisent clairement ces taxons et mettent en évidence une variabilité intraspécifique. L’analyse morphologique ne permet pas de différencier les femelles des deux espèces sur la base des caractères génitaux. Un caractère céphalique nouveau tenant à la présence de dents latérales antérieures sur l’armature pharyngienne de P. chabaudi, absentes chez P. riouxi, est proposé, mais un recours au typage moléculaire semble nécessaire pour une identification fiable.

Trois espèces nouvelles de Phlébotomes appartenant au genre Sergentomyia França & Parrot sont décrites de Madagascar : Sergentomyia sclerosiphon n. sp., S. namo n. sp. et S. anka n. sp. Les appariements mâles-femelles chez S. sclerosiphon n. sp. et chez S. anka n. sp. s’appuient sur les homologies d’une partie des séquences du cytochrome b de l’ADN mitochondrial. La morphologie originale des spermathèques (forme du corps et sclérification d’une partie des conduits individuels) autorise la création d’un nouveau sous-genre, Vattieromyia subg. nov., regroupant ces trois espèces.

Une espèce nouvelle de Phlébotome, Sergentomyia majungaensis n. sp. est décrite de Madagascar. La femelle s’individualise des autres espèces du genre Sergentomyia par une formule antennaire originale (1/IV-V à VII ; 2/VI à VIII-XV) et la forme particulière des spermathèques, lisses, étroites, à conduit commun, rappelant à la fois celles des sous-genres Sergentomyia et Parrotomyia. Les mâles partagent avec les Grassomyia la formule antennaire 1/IV-XV. Ils s’en individualisent par la vestiture du mésanepisterne et la longueur du troisième segment antennaire.

Une espèce nouvelle de Phlébotome, Chinius barbazani est décrite de grottes de Thaïlande. Son inclusion dans le genre Chinius, monospécifique jusqu’à présent, est discutée et argumentée sur la base de caractères céphaliques (yeux, pharynx, cibarium, suture interoculaire complète, longueur des pièces buccales), thoraciques (ailes arrondies), abdominaux (présence de glandes en trompettes chez le mâle) et génitaux (morphologie du génitalia chez les mâles et des spermathèques chez les femelles). L’aile de Chinius barbazani est dépourvue de nervure R2 dans les deux sexes ce que les auteurs discutent et considèrent comme une vraisemblable régression autapomorphique. La diagnose différentielle avec C. junlianensis Leng, 1987 repose sur de nombreux caractères dont la nervation alaire, la formule antennaire et la longueur des conduits génitaux ou des spermathèques, cinq fois plus courts.

Une espèce nouvelle de phlébotome, Sergentomyia goodmani est décrite de Madagascar. Elle est placée dans le sous-genre Rondanomyia dont la validité est rétablie. Si l’on considère le taxon Grassomyia comme un genre à part entière, il s’agit de la première mention de Sergentomyia à Madagascar.

The note reports the data of a three-year sand fly investigation (1997-99) carried out in Eastern Sicily (Italy) with the aim to study the distribution of Phlebotomus sergenti. The survey involved a densely inhabited area at the foot of Mount Etna and the area of Iblei mounts. A total of 9,095 sand flies, of which 63.4 % males, were captured. Five species belonging to the genus Phlebotomus (P. perniciosus, P. perfiliewi, P. neglectus, P. sergenti and P. papatasi) and one to the genus Sergentomyia (S. minuta) were identified. Both the prevalence and distribution of the species were different within the two areas studied. In Mount Etna area, P. perniciosus (77.7 %) was the prevalent species followed by S. minuta (19.8 %), P. sergenti (2.0 %), P. neglectus (0.3 %) and P. papatasi (0.2 %). While in Iblei mounts region S. minuta (84,5 %) showed the highest prevalence, followed by P. perniciosus (14.4 %), P. perfiliewi (0,9 %) and P. neglectus (0,1 %). Here, P. sergenti was a very rare species (‹ 0.02). P. sergenti was mostly associated to domestic habitats of peri-urban and urban zones located between two and 750 m a.s.l. The density values of P. sergenti. expressed as number of specimens/m2 of sticky trap, were between 0.3 and 5.5 with the highest value in the hilly collecting sites. The low observed abundance of P. sergenti does not allow to draw any prediction on the role that the species could play in the transmission of leishmaniasis in Sicily.

Le mâle de Phlebotomus (Anaphlebotomus) fonlenillei n. sp. est décrit de la réserve de Namoroka (Madagascar). Son rattachement au sous-genre Anaphlebotomus repose sur la présence de quatre épines sur le style, l'absence de lobe basal sur le coxite et un paramère bilobé. La diagnose différentielle avec P. berentiensis et P. fertei est discutée et une clé de détermination des Anaphlebotomus mâles de Madagascar est proposée, le séquençage du second espace interne transcrit (ITS 2) de l'ADN ribosomique vient confirmer l'observation de différences morphologiques importantes existant entre P. fertei, P. huberti et P. fontenillei n. sp. et la proche parenté entre P. berentiensis et P. fontenillei n. sp.

Deux nouvelles espèces de phlébotomes sont décrites de Madagascar : Phlebotomus (Anaphlebotomus) fertei n. sp. à partir de trois mâles et Phlebotomus (Anaphlebotomus) huberti n. sp. à partir de deux femelles. Leur rattachement au sous-genre Anaphlebotomus repose chez le mâle sur la présence de quatre épines sur le style, l'absence de lobe basal sur le coxite, un paramère bilobé, la présence de soies antéro-inférieures sur le mésanépisterne et, chez la femelle, proche des espèces asiatiques du sous-genre, de l'ornementation du pharynx et du cibarium et de la présence de spermathèques annelées avec un conduit commun. Une importante différence de taille du second espace interne transcrit (ITS2) de l'ADN ribosomique nous a amenés à décrire le mâle et la femelle sous deux binômes différents. Ces deux espèces sont les deux premières du genre Phlebotomus observées à Madagascar. Elles portent à six le nombre de taxons du sous-genre Anaphlebotomus (si on en exclut P. fortunatarum) et s'ajoutent aux espèces connues : P. rodhaini, P. rousettus, P. stantoni et P. colabaensis.

Trois missions menées en 1993, 1998 et 1999 consacrées à l'étude de la transmission de la leishmaniose canine à Chypre ont permis la capture de plusieurs milliers de phlébotomes appartenant à onze espèces : Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus) papatasi, P. (Paraphlebotomus) alexandri, P. (Pa.) jacusieli (première mention à Chypre), P. (Pa.) sergenti, P. (Larroussius) galilaeus, P. (L) tobbi, P. (Transphlebotomus) economidesi, P. (T.) mascittii, Sergentomyia (Sergentomyia) azizi (dont les auteurs revalident le statut spécifique), S . (S.) fallax et S. (S.) minuta. P. (Adlerius) kyreniae n'a pas été retrouvé durant les prospections. Des hypothèses relatives au peuplement de l'île sont formulées (l'une au Miocène durant la crise messinienne, l'autre au Pléistocène) en accord avec cet inventaire faunistique.

Dans le foyer leishmanien cypriote, les auteurs ont disséqué 2910 femelles de phlébotomes appartenant à 11 espèces : Phlebotomus papatasi, P. sergenti, P. jacusieli, P. alexandri, P. tobbi, P. galilaeus, P. mascittii, P. economidesi, Sergentomyia fallax, S. minuta et S. azizi . Les deux larroussius (P. galilaeus et P. tobbi ) sont les espèces les plus abondantes. Elles représentent plus de 60 % des captures réalisées avec des pièges CDC. Des promastigotes ont été observées chez un seul spécimen appartenant à l'espèce P. tobbi. Elles ont été mises en culture puis identifiées selon la méthode isoenzymatique. La souche de Leishmania isolée appartient à l'espèce Leishmania infantum, zymodème MON 1. Le même zymodème a été aussi isolé et identifié chez quatre chiens de l'île. En l'absence des vecteurs habituels de L. infantum dans l'est méditerranéen (P. neglectus ef P. syriacus) et en raison de sa répartition à Chypre, P. tobbi constitue vraisemblablement un bon vecteur local. Sa faible anthropophilie expliquerait peut-être le très faible nombre de cas humains. Le rôle de P. galilaeus dans la transmission de la leishmaniose à Chypre reste à préciser.

Description d'une espèce nouvelle de phlébotome paléarctique : Phlebotomus (Transphlebotomus economidesi de Chypre. Le principal caractère d'identification étant la structure striée particulière des conduits, non dilatés, et des corps des spermathèques, l'holotype désigné est une femelle. Le mâle de la nouvelle espèce présente un nombre variable d'épines sur le style (4 à 6), mais la diagnose différentielle du mâle avec les espèces affines P. mascittii et P. canaaniticus reste délicate. Les aires de répartition des trois espèces du sous-genre Transphlebotomus sont rappelées.

Global changes in climate are contributing to modified Phlebotomine sand fly presence and activity, and the distribution of the pathogens they transmit (e.g., Leishmania and Phlebovirus), and are leading to their possible extension toward northern France. To predict the evolution of these pathogens and control their spread, it is essential to identify and characterize the presence and abundance of potential vectors. However, there are no recent publications describing sand fly species distribution in France. Consequently, we carried out a systematic review to provide distribution and abundance maps over time, along with a simplified dichotomous key for species in France. The review adhered to PRISMA guidelines, resulting in 172 relevant capture reports from 168 studies out of the 2646 documents retrieved, of which 552 were read and 228 analyzed. Seven species were recorded and categorized into three groups based on their abundance: low abundance species, abundant but little-studied species, and abundant vector species. Sand flies are certainly present throughout France but there is a greater diversity of species in the Mediterranean region. Phlebotomus perniciosus and Ph. ariasi are the most abundant and widely distributed species, playing a role as vectors of Leishmania. Sergentomyia minuta, though very abundant, remains under-studied, highlighting the need for further research. Phlebotomus papatasi, Ph. perfiliewi, Ph. sergenti, and Ph. mascittii are present in low numbers and are less documented, limiting understanding of their potential role as vectors. This work provides the necessary basis for comparison of field data generated in the future.

The arrival of pathogens, whether zoonotic or not, can have a lasting effect on commercial livestock farms, with dramatic health, social and economic consequences. However, available data concerning the arthropod vectors present and circulating on livestock farms in France are still very imprecise, fragmentary, and scattered. In this context, we conducted a systematic review of the hematophagous arthropod species recorded on different types of cattle farms in mainland France (including Corsica). The used vector “groups” studied were biting flies, biting midges, black flies, fleas, horse flies, lice, louse flies, mosquitoes, sand flies, and ticks. A large number of documents were selected (N = 9,225), read (N = 1,047) and analyzed (N = 290), allowing us to provide distribution and abundance maps of different species of medical and veterinary interest according to literature data. Despite the large number of documents collected and analyzed, there are few data provided on cattle farm characteristics. Moreover, data on all arthropod groups lack numerical detail and are based on limited data in time and/or space. Therefore, they are not generalizable nor comparable. There is still little information on many vectors (and their pathogens) and still many unknowns for most studied groups. It appears necessary to provide new, updated and standardized data, collected in different geographical and climatological areas. Finally, this work highlights the lack of entomologists, funding, training and government support, leading to an increased risk of uncontrolled disease emergence in cattle herds.

Phlebotomus betisi was described from Malaysia and classified after its description in the subgenus Larroussius. It was the only species to have a pharyngeal armature composed of dot-like teeth and an annealed spermatheca whose head is carried by a neck in females. Males were characterized by having a style bearing five spines and a simple paramere. The study of sandflies originating from a cave in Laos enabled us to discover and describe two sympatric species close to Ph. betisi Lewis & Wharton, 1963 and new for Science: Ph. breyi Vongphayloth & Depaquit n. sp., and Ph. sinxayarami Vongphayloth & Depaquit n. sp. They were characterized morphologically, morphometrically, geomorphometrically, molecularly, and proteomically (MALDI-TOF). All approaches converged to validate the individualization of these species whose morphological differential characters lay in the two genders by the observation of the interocular suture and by the length of the last two segments of the maxillary palps. In males, the length of the genital filaments discriminates these species. Females are distinguished by the length of the ducts of the spermathecae as well as by the narrow or enlarged shape of the neck bearing their head. Lastly, the particular position of the spines of the gonostyle coupled with molecular phylogeny led us to remove these three species from the subgenus Larroussius Nizulescu, 1931 and to classify them in a new subgenus: Lewisius Depaquit & Vongphayloth n. subg.

New World sandflies are vectors of leishmaniasis, bartonellosis, and some arboviruses. A classification based on 88 morphological characters was proposed 27 years ago when the New World phlebotomines were organized into two tribes Hertigiini and Phlebotomini. The latter was structured into four subtribes (Brumptomyiina, Sergentomyiina, Lutzomyiina, and Psychodopygina) and 20 genera. The subtribe Psychodopygina, including most of the American vectors of tegumentary Leishmania comprises seven genera from which no molecular work has been produced to support this classification. Here, we carried out a molecular phylogeny based on combined sequences (1,334 bp) of two genes: partial 28S rDNA and mtDNA cytochrome b from 47 taxa belonging to the Psychodopygina. The Bayesian phylogenetic reconstruction agreed with the classification based on morphological characters, supporting the monophyly of the genera Psychodopygus and Psathyromyia, whereas Nyssomyia and Trichophoromyia seemed to be paraphyletic. The paraphylies of the two latter groups were exclusively caused by the doubtful position of the species Ny. richardwardi. Our molecular analysis provides additional support to adopt the morphologic classification of Psychodopygina.

Mermithid nematodes (Nematoda, Mermithidae) parasitising mosquitoes could be useful as biological agents for the control of host populations. Nine female mosquitoes belonging to the species Aedes cantans, Ae. communis, and Ae. rusticus were found parasitised by mermithids in Northern France. Sequencing of partial 18S rDNA showed 100% sequence homology for all processed specimens. The mermithid sequences were closely related to specimens previously recorded from Anopheles gambiae in Senegal. However, 18S sequences do not allow for identification of nematodes at the genus or species level. Our specimens could also be related to Strelkovimermis spiculatus, or belong to other genera not yet sequenced such as Empidomermis, the only mermithid genus recorded from mosquitoes in France.
