In recent times, large language models (LLMs) have made significant strides in generating computer code, blurring the lines between code created by humans and code produced by artificial intelligence (AI). As these technologies evolve rapidly, it is crucial to explore how they influence code generation, especially given the risk of misuse in areas like higher education. This paper explores this issue by using advanced classification techniques to differentiate between code written by humans and that generated by ChatGPT, a type of LLM. We employ a new approach that combines powerful embedding features (black-box) with supervised learning algorithms - including Deep Neural Networks, Random Forests, and Extreme Gradient Boosting - to achieve this differentiation with an impressive accuracy of 98%. For the successful combinations, we also examine their model calibration, showing that some of the models are extremely well calibrated. Additionally, we present white-box features and an interpretable Bayes classifier to elucidate critical differences between the code sources, enhancing the explainability and transparency of our approach. Both approaches work well but provide at most 85-88% accuracy. We also show that untrained humans solve the same task not better than random guessing. This study is crucial in understanding and mitigating the potential risks associated with using AI in code generation, particularly in the context of higher education, software development, and competitive programming., Comment: Accepted for publication in MDPI AI Journal

Statistics - Methodology ,Statistics - Computation - Abstract
Kaplan-Meier curves stratified by treatment allocation are the most popular way to depict causal effects in studies with right-censored time-to-event endpoints. If the treatment is randomly assigned and the sample size of the study is adequate, this method produces unbiased estimates of the population-averaged counterfactual survival curves. However, in the presence of confounding, this is no longer the case. Instead, specific methods that allow adjustment for confounding must be used. We present the adjustedCurves R package, which can be used to estimate and plot these confounder-adjusted survival curves using a variety of methods from the literature. It provides a convenient wrapper around existing R packages on the topic and adds additional methods and functionality on top of it, uniting the sometimes vastly different methods under one consistent framework. Among the additional features are the estimation of confidence intervals, confounder-adjusted restricted mean survival times and confounder-adjusted survival time quantiles. After giving a brief overview of the implemented methods, we illustrate the package using publicly available data from an observational study including 2982 breast cancer., Comment: submitted to the Journal of Statistical Software

Statistics - Methodology - Abstract
With unprecedented speed, 192,248,678 doses of Covid-19 vaccines were administered in Germany by July 11, 2023 to combat the pandemic. Limitations of clinical trials imply that the safety profile of these vaccines is not fully known before marketing. However, routine health-care data can help address these issues. Despite the high proportion of insured people, the analysis of vaccination-related data is challenging in Germany. Generally, the Covid-19 vaccination status and other health-care data are stored in separate databases, without persistent and database-independent person identifiers. Error-prone record-linkage techniques must be used to merge these databases. Our aim was to quantify the impact of record-linkage errors on the power and bias of different analysis methods designed to assess Covid-19 vaccine safety when using German health-care data with a Monte-Carlo simulation study. We used a discrete-time simulation and empirical data to generate realistic data with varying amounts of record-linkage errors. Afterwards, we analysed this data using a Cox model and the self-controlled case series (SCCS) method. Realistic proportions of random linkage errors only had little effect on the power of either method. The SCCS method produced unbiased results even with a high percentage of linkage errors, while the Cox model underestimated the true effect.

Science - Abstract
Abstract Influenza virus pandemics are caused by viruses from animal reservoirs that adapt to efficiently infect and replicate in human hosts. Here, we investigate whether Interferon-Induced Transmembrane Protein 3 (IFITM3), a host antiviral factor with known human deficiencies, plays a role in interspecies virus infection and adaptation. We find that IFITM3-deficient mice and human cells can be infected with low doses of avian influenza viruses that fail to infect WT counterparts, identifying a new role for IFITM3 in controlling the minimum infectious virus dose threshold. Remarkably, influenza viruses passaged through Ifitm3 −/− mice exhibit enhanced host adaptation, a result that is distinct from viruses passaged in mice deficient for interferon signaling, which exhibit attenuation. Our data demonstrate that IFITM3 deficiency uniquely facilitates potentially zoonotic influenza virus infections and subsequent adaptation, implicating IFITM3 deficiencies in the human population as a vulnerability for emergence of new pandemic viruses.

Abstract Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) represents the standard treatment for therapy-refractory, malignant or complicated ulcerative colitis (UC) and can be performed as a 2-stage or 3-stage procedure. This study aimed to compare the short- and long-term outcomes after 2- and 3-stage IPAA in patients with UC in our department. A retrospective analysis of 176 patients with UC who received 2- or 3-stage restorative proctocolectomy with IPAA at our institution from 2001 to 2021 was performed. Outcomes for short-term (morbidity, longer hospital stay, readmission) and long-term (pouch failure and quality of life) parameters were compared between the 2- and 3-stage procedure. Regarding short-term outcomes for all patients, in-hospital morbidity and readmission rates after any surgical stage were observed in 69% and 24%, respectively. Morbidity and readmission did not differ significantly between the 2- and 3-stage procedure in uni- and multivariate analysis. Median length of hospital stay for all stages was 17 days. The 3-stage procedure was identified as an independent factor for longer hospital stay (OR 3.8 (CI 1.3–10.8), p = 0.014). Pouch failure and failure of improved quality of life during long-term follow-up occurred both in 10% of patients, with no significant differences between the 2- and 3-stage procedure in uni- and multivariate analysis. Our data suggest that both the 2- and 3-stage proctocolectomy with IPAA demonstrate favourable and comparable postoperative short- and long-term outcomes, with a high rate of improved quality of life in patients with UC.

Through its wide-ranging effects on human physiology and behaviour, daily light exposure is an important environmental modulator of healthy ageing. Integrating mobile health (mHealth) technology with behaviour change strategies offers a promising approach to optimise light exposure and positively impact sleep, rest-wake cycles, cognitive function, and mood at scale. This study aims to develop the LightSPAN mHealth behaviour change intervention to optimise light exposure across the lifespan. Employing a co-design methodology, the study comprises two distinct workstreams. The first focuses on conceptualising the theoretical framework and implementation strategies through a comprehensive review of light exposure interventions, behaviour change theories, mHealth user personas, and recommendations for designing mHealth interventions for older adults. The second workstream centres on co-designing the intervention, involving consultation with community service providers and engagement with older adults at ageing community centres (≥60 years of age). Community service providers will be consulted through open-ended discussions (target n=5). Older adult participants (n=20) will engage in telephone interviews, focus group discussions and prototyping workshops to explore older adult participants’ characteristics, needs, preferences, and mHealth intervention design elements and co-design the LightSPAN mHealth behaviour change intervention. The insights generated in these co-design components will ensure that the intervention addresses the needs of its future users.

IntroductionUnderstanding the mutational landscape of colon cancer (CC) is crucial for targeted therapy development. Microsatellite instability (MSI-H), rat sarcoma (RAS), and B-Raf proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase (BRAF) mutations (MT) are pivotal markers. Further investigation into clinicopathological features of RAS and BRAF MT in microsatellite stable (MSS) and MSI-H tumors is warranted.MethodsA retrospective analysis of 4883 localized CC patients (pts.) was conducted. Molecular profiling assessed MSI, KRAS, NRAS, and BRAF MT. Correlation with clinicopathological data employed ANOVA and Chi-square tests. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed adjusting for age, gender, sidedness, UICC stage, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). A Cox model incorporated all variables as covariates.ResultsThis analysis included 4883 pts. (2302 female/2572 male, 3865 (79.2%) MSS, 1018 (20.8%) MSI-H). MSS pts. had more All-Wild Type (WT), KRAS MT, and NRAS MT tumors vs. MSI-H pts. (42.1% vs. 21.1%; 39.8% vs. 15.4%; 3.6% vs. 0.7%; p

Abstract Crystallization fouling, a process where mineral scales form on surfaces, is of broad importance in nature and technology, negatively impacting water treatment and electricity production. However, a rational methodology for designing materials with intrinsic resistance to scaling and scale adhesion remains elusive. Here, guided by nucleation physics, this work investigates the effect of coating composition and surface structure on the nucleation and growth mechanism of scale on metallic heat transfer surfaces nanoengineered by large‐area techniques. This work observes that on hydrophilic nanostructured copper, despite its significantly enlarged surface area compared to smooth surfaces, scale formation is substantially suppressed leading to sustained, efficient cooling performance. This work reveals the mechanism through thermofluidic modeling coupled with in situ optical characterization and show that surface bubble formation through degassing is responsible for generating local hot spots enhancing supersaturation. This work then demonstrates a scalephobic nanostructured surface which reduces the accumulated surface scale mass 3.5× and maintains an 82% higher heat transfer coefficient compared to superhydrophobic surfaces with corresponding energy conversion savings. This work not only advances the understanding of fouling mechanisms but also holds promise for practical applications in industries reliant on efficient heat transfer processes.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
Pseudospin is an angular momentum degree of freedom introduced in analogy to the real electron spin in the effective massless Dirac-like equation used to describe wave evolution at conical intersections such as the Dirac cones of graphene. Here, we study a photonic implementation of a chiral borophene allotrope hosting a pseudospin-2 conical intersection in its energy-momentum spectrum. The presence of this fivefold spectral degeneracy gives rise to quasiparticles with pseudospin up to $\pm2$. We report on conical diffraction and pseudospin-orbit interaction of light in photonic chiral borophene, which, as a result of topological charge conversion, leads to the generation of highly charged optical phase vortices.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
Flat band systems are usually associated to compact localized states (CLSs) resulting from the macroscopic degeneracy of eigenstates at the flat band energy. In case of singular flat bands, these conventional localized flat band states have been found to be incomplete leading to the existence of so-called noncontractible loop states (NLSs) with nontrivial real space topology. Here, we experimentally and analytically demonstrate that a 2D photonic borophene lattice can host NLSs without a CLS counterpart because of a band that is flat only along high-symmetry lines and dispersive along others. We hence dispel the conventional wisdom that NLSs are necessarily linked to robust boundary modes due to a bulk-boundary correspondence. Originating from band touching protected by the band flatness, NLSs play a key role in studying the fundamental physics of flat band systems. Our results truly transform the current understanding of flat bands and could readily be transferred to a 2D material in the form of a planar sheet of boron atoms.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
The Lieb lattice and the kagome lattice, which are both well known for their Dirac cones and flat bands, can be continuously converted into each other by a shearing transformation. During this transformation, the flat band is destroyed, but the Dirac cones remain and become tilted, with types I, II, and III occurring for different parameters. In this work, we first study these tilted Dirac cones using a tight-binding model, revealing how they can be engineered into the different types. We then demonstrate conical diffraction in a photonic lattice realization of the Lieb-kagome lattice using split-step beam propagation simulations, obtaining evidence of the presence of Dirac cones tilted in different directions. Finally, we performed experiments with photonic lattices laser-written in fused silica (SiO$_2$) to validate the results of the simulations. These studies advance the understanding of the Lieb-kagome lattice and tilted Dirac cones in general and provide a basis for further research into this interesting tunable lattice system.

Statistics - Methodology - Abstract
Visualization is a key aspect of communicating the results of any study aiming to estimate causal effects. In studies with time-to-event outcomes, the most popular visualization approach is depicting survival curves stratified by the variable of interest. This approach cannot be used when the variable of interest is continuous. Simple workarounds, such as categorizing the continuous covariate and plotting survival curves for each category, can result in misleading depictions of the main effects. Instead, we propose a new graphic, the survival area plot, to directly depict the survival probability over time and as a function of a continuous covariate simultaneously. This plot utilizes g-computation based on a suitable time-to-event model to obtain the relevant estimates. Through the use of g-computation, those estimates can be adjusted for confounding without additional effort, allowing a causal interpretation under the standard causal identifiability assumptions. If those assumptions are not met, the proposed plot may still be used to depict noncausal associations. We illustrate and compare the proposed graphics to simpler alternatives using data from a large German observational study investigating the effect of the Ankle Brachial Index on survival. To facilitate the usage of these plots, we additionally developed the contsurvplot R-package which includes all methods discussed in this paper., Comment: currently under review in "Epidemiology"

Physics - Optics - Abstract
Photonic lattices have emerged as a promising approach to localize light in space, for example, through topologically protected edge states and Aharonov-Bohm caging. They are of particular importance in the study of flat band systems via the associated nondiffracting compact localized states. However, such states typically appear static, thus not allowing adaptive or evolutionary features of light localization. Here we report on the first experimental realization of an oscillating compact localized state (OCLS). We observe an oscillatory intensity beating during propagation in a two-dimensional photonic decorated Lieb lattice. The photonic system is realized by direct femtosecond laser writing and hosts multiple flat bands at different eigenenergies in its band structure. Our results open new avenues for evolution dynamics in the up to now static phenomenon of light localization in periodic waveguide structures.

Abstract Influenza virus activates cellular inflammasome pathways, which can be both beneficial and detrimental to infection outcomes. Here, we investigate the function of the inflammasome-activated, pore-forming protein gasdermin D (GSDMD) during infection. Ablation of GSDMD in knockout (KO) mice (Gsdmd −/− ) significantly attenuates influenza virus-induced weight loss, lung dysfunction, lung histopathology, and mortality compared with wild type (WT) mice, despite similar viral loads. Infected Gsdmd −/− mice exhibit decreased inflammatory gene signatures shown by lung transcriptomics. Among these, diminished neutrophil gene activation signatures are corroborated by decreased detection of neutrophil elastase and myeloperoxidase in KO mouse lungs. Indeed, directly infected neutrophils are observed in vivo and infection of neutrophils in vitro induces release of DNA and tissue-damaging enzymes that is largely dependent on GSDMD. Neutrophil depletion in infected WT mice recapitulates the reductions in mortality, lung inflammation, and lung dysfunction observed in Gsdmd −/− animals, while depletion does not have additive protective effects in Gsdmd −/− mice. These findings implicate a function for GSDMD in promoting lung neutrophil responses that amplify influenza virus-induced inflammation and pathogenesis. Targeting the GSDMD/neutrophil axis may provide a therapeutic avenue for treating severe influenza.

Statistics - Methodology - Abstract
Treatment specific survival curves are an important tool to illustrate the treatment effect in studies with time-to-event outcomes. In non-randomized studies, unadjusted estimates can lead to biased depictions due to confounding. Multiple methods to adjust survival curves for confounders exist. However, it is currently unclear which method is the most appropriate in which situation. Our goal is to compare forms of Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighting, the G-Formula, Propensity Score Matching, Empirical Likelihood Estimation and augmented estimators as well as their pseudo-values based counterparts in different scenarios with a focus on their bias and goodness-of-fit. We provide a short review of all methods and illustrate their usage by contrasting the survival of smokers and non-smokers, using data from the German Epidemiological Trial on Ankle-Brachial-Index. Subsequently, we compare the methods using a Monte-Carlo simulation. We consider scenarios in which correctly or incorrectly specified models for describing the treatment assignment and the time-to-event outcome are used with varying sample sizes. The bias and goodness-of-fit is determined by taking the entire survival curve into account. When used properly, all methods showed no systematic bias in medium to large samples. Cox regression based methods, however, showed systematic bias in small samples. The goodness-of-fit varied greatly between different methods and scenarios. Methods utilizing an outcome model were more efficient than other techniques, while augmented estimators using an additional treatment assignment model were unbiased when either model was correct with a goodness-of-fit comparable to other methods. These doubly-robust methods have important advantages in every considered scenario., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures, revised version for "Statistics in Medicine", was presented at the International Biometric Conference 2022

Physics - Optics - Abstract
We report on singular and nonsingular flat bands in a Sierpinski fractal-like photonic lattice. We demonstrate that the the lowest two bands, being isolated and degenerate due to geometrical frustration, are nonsingular and thus can be spanned by a complete set of compact localized states. We experimentally prove these states to propagate diffractionless in the photonic lattice. Our results reveal the interplay between geometrical frustration, degenerate flat bands and compact localized states in a single photonic lattice, and pave the way to photonic spin liquid ground states.

BackgroundPancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the deadliest forms of cancer and peritoneal dissemination is one major cause for this poor prognosis. Exosomes have emerged as promising biomarkers for gastrointestinal cancers and can be found in all kinds of bodily fluids, also in peritoneal fluid (PF). This is a unique sample due to its closeness to gastrointestinal malignancies. The receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 1 (ROR1) has been identified as a potential biomarker in human cancers and represents a promising target for an immunotherapy approach, which could be considered for future treatment strategies. Here we prospectively analyzed the exosomal surface protein ROR1 (exo-ROR1) in PF in localized PDAC patients (PER-) on the one hand and peritoneal disseminated tumor stages (PER+) on the other hand followed by the correlation of exo-ROR1 with clinical-pathological parameters.MethodsExosomes were isolated from PF and plasma samples of non-cancerous (NC) (n = 15), chronic pancreatitis (CP) (n = 4), localized PDAC (PER-) (n = 18) and peritoneal disseminated PDAC (PER+) (n = 9) patients and the surface protein ROR1 was detected via FACS analysis. Additionally, soluble ROR1 in PF was analyzed. ROR1 expression in tissue was investigated using western blots (WB), qPCR, and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Exosome isolation was proven by Nano Tracking Analysis (NTA), WB, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and BCA protein assay. The results were correlated with clinical data and survival analysis was performed.ResultsPDAC (PER+) patients have the highest exo-ROR1 values in PF and can be discriminated from NC (p

Three-dimensional (3D) topological states resemble truly localised, particle-like objects in physical space. Among the richest such structures are 3D skyrmions and hopfions that realise integer topological numbers in their configuration via homotopic mappings from real space to the hypersphere (sphere in 4D space) or the 2D sphere. They have received tremendous attention as exotic textures in particle physics, cosmology, superfluids, and many other systems. Here we experimentally create and measure a topological 3D skyrmionic hopfion in fully structured light. By simultaneously tailoring the polarization and phase profile, our beam establishes the skyrmionic mapping by realising every possible optical state in the propagation volume. The resulting light field's Stokes parameters and phase are synthesised into a Hopf fibration texture. We perform volumetric full-field reconstruction of the $\Pi_3$ mapping, measuring a quantised topological charge, or Skyrme number, of 0.945. Such topological state control opens new avenues for 3D optical data encoding and metrology. The Hopf characterisation of the optical hypersphere endows a new perspective to topological optics, offering experimentally accessible photonic analogues to the gamut of particle-like 3D topological textures, from condensed matter to high-energy physics., Comment: Main text: 9 pages, 4 figures; Methods: 6 pages; Supplementary Information: 28 pages, 10 figures

We reconstruct the Lorentzian graviton propagator in asymptotically safe quantum gravity from Euclidean data. The reconstruction is applied to both the dynamical fluctuation graviton and the background graviton propagator. We prove that the spectral function of the latter necessarily has negative parts similar to, and for the same reasons, as the gluon spectral function. In turn, the spectral function of the dynamical graviton is positive. We argue that the latter enters cross sections and other observables in asymptotically safe quantum gravity. Hence, its positivity may hint at the unitarity of asymptotically safe quantum gravity., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

Flat band systems are commonly associated with compact localized states (CLSs) that arise from the macroscopic degeneracy of eigenstates at the flat band energy. However, in the case of singular flat bands, conventional localized flat band states are incomplete, leading to the existence of noncontractible loop states (NLSs) with nontrivial real-space topology. In this study, we experimentally and analytically demonstrate the existence of NLSs in a 2D photonic borophene lattice without a CLS counterpart, owing to a band that is flat only along high-symmetry lines and dispersive along others. Our findings challenge the conventional notion that NLSs are necessarily linked to robust boundary modes due to a bulk-boundary correspondence. Protected by the band flatness that originates from band touching, NLSs play a significant role in investigating the fundamental physics of flat band systems.

Abstract Novel malaria vector control strategies targeting the odour-orientation of mosquitoes during host-seeking, such as ‘attract-and-kill’ or ‘push-and-pull’, have been suggested as complementary tools to indoor residual spraying and long-lasting insecticidal nets. These would be particularly beneficial if they can target vectors in the peri-domestic space where people are unprotected by traditional interventions. A randomized double-blind placebo-control study was implemented in western Kenya to evaluate: a ‘push’ intervention (spatial repellent) using transfluthrin-treated fabric strips positioned at open eave gaps of houses; a ‘pull’ intervention placing an odour-baited mosquito trap at a 5 m distance from a house; the combined ‘push–pull’ package; and the control where houses contained all elements but without active ingredients. Treatments were rotated through 12 houses in a randomized-block design. Outdoor biting was estimated using human landing catches, and indoor mosquito densities using light-traps. None of the interventions provided any protection from outdoor biting malaria vectors. The ‘push’ reduced indoor vector densities dominated by Anopheles funestus by around two thirds. The ‘pull’ device did not add any benefit. In the light of the high Anopheles arabiensis biting densities outdoors in the study location, the search for efficient outdoor protection and effective pull components needs to continue.

IntroductionNowadays, more and more digital resources are used in modern mathematical modeling classes. In order to access these resources, students need a suitable digital device—often mobile devices are used for this purpose. There are several concepts to enable students access to such devices. For example, students can be allowed to use their self-owned devices [Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) concept] or teachers can hand out school-owned devices to their students [device pool (pool) concept]. Currently, little is known about possible effects of different mobile device access concepts on student learning. Hence, in this study, we investigated their effects on students’ mathematical modeling competence. In doing so, we also considered an interaction between the access concept and the effects of (a) students’ problematic smartphone use and (b) students’ fear of missing out on learning mathematical modeling.MethodTo this end, we conducted an experiment, measured students’ mathematical modeling competence as the outcome variable, and analyzed data of 263 German students in grades 8 and 9 using a multilevel model. In the experiment, students were randomly assigned to one of two study conditions and completed a mathematics modeling workshop. In the BYOD condition, students utilized their self-owned smartphones to work on the workshop tasks, whereas in the pool condition, students utilized institutionally provided smartphones.ResultsAs a main finding, our results showed an interaction effect between the mobile device access concept and students’ problematic smartphone use on their competence (β = −0.24, 95% CI [−0.47, −0.01]). Students utilizing their self-owned smartphones were negatively affected by their problematic smartphone use (B = −1.45, 95% CI [−2.45, −0.46]), whereas students utilizing provided smartphones were not affected (B = 0.04, 95% CI [−1.01, 1.09]). Students with maximal problematic smartphone use achieved higher competences when utilizing provided devices (BBYOD−Pool = −1.20, 95% CI [–2.35, –0.05]).DiscussionOur study demonstrates the importance of thinking about effects of student-owned and provided digital devices on mathematics learning. Finally, we discuss (a) that our results do not reveal a general preferability for one of the two access concepts, as well as (b) the relevance of student characteristics when choosing an access concept.

Introduction: The possibility of balancing career and family is meanwhile a central concern for most physicians when choosing a job. The aim of this study was to identify current barriers and opportunities for physician education and career planning. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted as an online survey between 11/2021 and 02/2022 and targeted physicians at all career levels in Germany who were members of a clinical professional association. Alternative and consent questions were used to assess experiences/attitudes toward various aspects of life and career planning, as well as alternative work and parental leave models, depending on gender, specialty, and hierarchical level. Results: The majority of the 2060 participants were female (69%) and had children (66%). Many childless residents reported that they felt they had to choose between children and a career. The majority of female residents, specialists and attending physicians (Ø 55.5%) stated that they had experienced career losses as a result of taking parental leave, while most men did not share this experience (Ø 53.7%). 92% of all participants agreed with the statement that men and women have different career opportunities. Job-sharing models were considered feasible at all levels of the hierarchy by an average of 55.6% of all medical executives. Conclusion: Parenthood and the use of parental leave and part-time work appear to have a significant impact on the career paths of those surveyed. Although the majority of directors of medical training programs are open to job-sharing models, further measures are needed in order to equalize career opportunities for men and women.

Low absorption in the thin active layer of conventional organic solar cells limits their power conversion efficiency. Structured surface layers are a common approach to diffracting incoming light, thus elongating its path through the active layer, thereby increasing the probability of absorption and hence the power conversion efficiency. While standard periodic structures diffract light into discrete angles, making them optimal only for specific wavelengths, random structures induce broadband, but nontailorable diffraction. Thus, instead, a stealthy hyperuniform structure, designed to exhibit beneficial diffraction properties is implemented: it directs the light into a predefined range of higher angles, prevents diffraction into small angles, and is thus ideal for a strong active path length enhancement. After numerical optimization of the feature height and diameter, the stealthy hyperuniform structure is fabricated in silicon by electron beam lithography and subsequently transferred into a transparent polymer via replica molding. Experimental diffraction images reveal a circular symmetric spectrum, inducing diffraction independent of the azimuthal angle and polarization of the incident light. The application of the stealthy hyperuniform structure on a poly[(2,6‐(4,8‐bis(5‐(2‐ethylhexyl)thiophen‐2‐yl)‐benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene))‐alt‐(5,5‐(1′,3′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐5′,7′‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)benzo[1′,2′‐c:4′,5′‐c′]dithiophene‐4,8‐dione)]:3,9‐bis(2‐methylene‐(3‐(1,1‐dicyanomethylene)‐indanone))‐5,5,11,11‐tetrakis(4‐hexylphenyl)‐dithieno[2,3‐d:2′,3′‐d’]‐s‐indaceno[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene organic solar cell leads to a sharp increase in current density and power conversion efficiency.

Physics - Accelerator Physics - Abstract
An energy of $362\:\text{MJ}$ is stored in each of the two LHC proton beams for nominal beam parameters. This will be further increased to about $700\:\text{MJ}$ in the future High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and uncontrolled beam losses represent a significant hazard for the integrity and safe operation of the machine. In this paper, a number of failure mechanisms that can lead to a fast increase of beam losses are analyzed. Most critical are failures in the magnet protection system, namely the quench heaters and a novel protection system called Coupling-Loss Induced Quench (CLIQ). An important outcome is that magnet protection has to be evaluated for its impact on the beam and designed accordingly. In particular, CLIQ, which is to protect the new HL-LHC triplet magnets, constitutes the fastest known failure in the LHC if triggered spuriously. A schematic change of CLIQ to mitigate the hazard is presented. A loss of the Beam-Beam Kick due to the extraction of one beam is another source of beam losses with a fast onset. A significantly stronger impact is expected in the upcoming LHC Run III and HL-LHC as compared to the current LHC, mainly due to the increased bunch intensity. Its criticality and mitigation methods are discussed. It is shown that symmetric quenches in the superconducting magnets for the final focusing triplet can have a significant impact on the beam on short timescales. The impact on the beam due to failures of the Beam-Beam Compensating Wires as well as coherent excitations by the transverse beam damper are also discussed., Comment: 28 pages, 23 figures. AbstractIntroduction Neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy for the management of soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are still preferably delivered sequentially, with or without concurrent hyperthermia. Concurrent delivery of chemo-, radio- and thermotherapy may produce synergistic effects and reduce chemotherapy-free intervals. The few available studies suggest that concurrent chemoradiation (CRT) has a greater local effect. Data on the efficacy and toxicity of adding hyperthermia to CRT (CRTH) are sparse.Materials and methods A cohort of 101 patients with STS of the extremities and trunk who received CRT (n = 33) or CRTH (n = 68) before resection of macroscopic tumor (CRT: n = 19, CRTH: n = 49) or re-resection following a non-oncological resection, so called ‘whoops procedure’, (CRT: n = 14, CRTH: n = 19) were included in this retrospective study. CRT consisted of two cycles of doxorubicine (50 mg/m2 on d2) plus ifosfamide (1500 mg/m2 on d1-5, q28) plus radiation doses of up to 60 Gy. Hyperthermia was delivered in two sessions per week. Results All patients received the minimum dose of 50 Gy. Median doses of ifosfamide and doxorubicin were comparable between CRT (75%/95%) and CRTH (78%/97%). The median number of hyperthermia sessions was seven. There were no differences in acute toxicities. Major wound complications occurred in 15% (CRT) vs. 25% (CRTH) (p = 0.19). In patients with macroscopic disease, the addition of hyperthermia resulted in a tendency toward improved remission: regression ≥90% occurred in 21/48 (CRTH) vs. 4/18 (CRT) patients (p = 0.197). With a median postoperative follow-up of 72 months, 6-year local control and overall survival rates for CRTH vs. CRT alone were 85 vs. 78% (p = 0.938) and 79 vs. 71% (p = 0.215).Conclusions Both CRT and CRTH are well tolerated with an expected rate of wound complications. The results suggest that adding hyperthermia may improve tumor response.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
Structured light has revolutionized optical particle manipulation and nano-scale material processing. In particular, propagation-invariant structured light fields, such as Bessel beams, have enabled applications that require robust intensity distributions. Their self-healing nature facilitates imaging with enhanced resolution e.g. in light-sheet microscopy. The prominent high-intensity features of propagation-invariant fields such as Airy, Bessel, and Mathieu beams can be understood in terms of caustics. While these beams have found many applications in material processing and trapping, these technologies would greatly benefit from structured, controllable intensities in a variety of shapes well beyond the standard families of propagation-invariant beams. Here we generalize propagation-invariant beams by tailoring their caustics through two different methods. We illustrate these approaches by implementing various tailored propagation-invariant beams experimentally, whose patterns range from simple geometric shapes to complex configurations such as words. This approach clarifies that the known solutions are a small subset of a far more general set of propagation-invariant fields with intensity maxima concentrated around any desired curve.

Partial bosonisation of the two-dimensional Hubbard model focuses the functional renormalisation flow on channels in which interactions become strong and local order sets in. We compare the momentum structure of the four-fermion vertex, obtained on the basis of a patching approximation, to an effective bosonic description. For parameters in the antiferromagnetic phase near the onset of local antiferromagnetic order, the interaction of the electrons is indeed well described by the exchange of collective bosonic degrees of freedom. The residual four-fermion vertex after the subtraction of the bosonic exchange contribution is small. We propose that similar partial bosonisation techniques can improve the accuracy of renormalisation flow studies also for the case of competing order., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys.
