Part I of this two-part article concentrates on the early 20th century origin of the nonanatomic concept of complete denture occlusion. It focuses on Dr. Victor Sears, who in 1922 made a courageous departure from convention when he introduced the design for his "Chewing Members." Development of these teeth marked the birth of the School of Nonanatomic Denture Occlusion. This paper describes a previously unknown denture constructed from hippopotamus ivory. The denture is unusual in that it is anatomically correct in terms of tooth morphology. It is believed that it was a demonstration item for the Great Exhibition of 1851.

This article discusses key turning points in removable partial denture (RPD) philosophy. Early advancements tended to focus upon improving the technical quality of the prosthesis itself. The beginning of the 20th century brought significant public pressure upon the dental profession due to consequences associated with poor quality fixed prostheses. The result was dramatic improvement and heavy demand for RPDs. Technical and efficiency issues conspired to temper this enthusiasm, eventually resulting in reduced respect for RPDs. Purpose: Selecting artificial teeth for a denture is complex when there are no remaining natural teeth and no pre-extraction records. The aim of this paper is to review the methods used to select artificial anterior teeth for the endentulous individual., Materials and Methods: The review takes account of the majority of papers published during the last 100 years and is organized according to the methods used for determining artificial tooth form., Results: Several factors have been proposed as aids for artificial tooth selection, and numerous methods have been devised for the evaluation of reliable esthetic factors in determining artificial tooth form., Conclusion: To date, no universally reliable method of determining tooth form has been found. The Williams classification (1914) is the most universally accepted method of determining anterior tooth form.

This is a brief overview of the progress of design philosophies of removable partial dentures. It begins in 1711 with the first published description of a removable partial denture prosthesis and continues, with discussion of the most significant discoveries, through 1990.

The history of denture base materials and the accompanying development of impression techniques are traced from the earliest times to the present day (Part 1) as a prelude to a study (Part 2-4) of the various theories that have been advanced to explain retention of the base without mechanical support. These theories are critically reviewed and tabulated in chronological order. Some areas for further investigation are identified.
