Background: Dental instrumentation with hand-held devices is associated with discomfort, fatigue and musculoskeletal diseases or repetitive stress injuries. The goal of this in vivo study was to determine the effect of an ergonomic handle sheath on muscle work, comfort and fatigue associated with (a) piezoelectric scaling by hygienists with and without musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and (b) dental cavity preparation by healthy dentists using a dental micromotor. Materials and Methods: Two groups of ten hygienists each tested the piezoelectric scaler. Hygienists in Group 1 had no MSDs, while those in Group 2 had been diagnosed with MSDs. Additionally, ten dentists with no MSDs used a dental micromotor to prepare four standardized cavities. Time-based work in four muscles, comfort and fatigue were recorded in the presence and absence of an add-on soft, insulating handle sheath. Data were analyzed using a repeated measures analysis of variance model with Tukeys post-hoc test. Results: Comfort, fatigue and muscle work were significantly better for both devices when the sheath was used. While hygienists with MSDs used more muscle work to complete the set scaling task, and the sheath-related reduction in work was somewhat greater, these MSD-related differences did not quite reach significance. Conclusions: The results of this pilot study show that the ergonomic performance of an ultrasonic scaler and a dental micromotor may be improved by the use of an ergonomic handle sheath.

Aids in establishing the diagnosis, radiography also plays an important role in determining treatment plans and evaluating the results of treatment that has been carried out previously. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent of the community's level of knowledge regarding dental radiography in Medan Perjuangan District. The type of research used is descriptive survey research with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study is the community in Medan Perjuangan District. The sample size is 200 people who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. By using questionnaires and analyzed descriptively. The result of this study is that the level of public knowledge regarding the uses, benefits, effects, and dose limits as well as radiation protection of dental radiography obtained very few results that can be answered correctly. The satisfaction of this study is that the level of public knowledge in Medan Perjuangan District regarding dental radiography examinations individually obtained results in the good category of 2.0%, the fair category of 14.0%, and the poor category of 84.0%. Background: Internet has become an indispensable source of health‐related information. However, several studies have shown there to be a lack of quality control for webpages related to disability. Specifically, available content concerning Down syndrome (DS) and dentistry is limited and of dubious quality. Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the quality of online content in Spanish and Portuguese on dental care for individuals with DS. Methods: A simultaneous search in Google and Bing using the terms "Down syndrome" and "odontology/dentist/dental treatment" in Spanish and Portuguese was conducted in seven Ibero‐American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, and Portugal). The first 100 consecutive pages of results from the three combinations of terms in each of the search engines were accessed and selected by applying conventional exclusion criteria. The selected pages were classified according to their authorship, specificity and dissemination potential. The quality of the online content was assessed using the DISCERN questionnaire and the Questionnaire to Evaluate Health Web Sites According to European Criteria (QEEC). The presence of the Health On Net (HON) and Accredited Medical Website (AMW) seals was also assessed. Results: The mean DISCERN score was 2.51 ± 0.85 and 2.57 ± 0.86 for the Spanish and Portuguese webpages, respectively. The mean readability score was 3.43 ± 1.26 and 3.25 ± 1.08 for the Spanish and Portuguese webpages, respectively. None of the selected webpages presented the HONcode or AMW trust seals. Conclusions: The content available online in Spanish and Portuguese regarding Down syndrome and dentistry is scarce and of highly questionable quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Soft skills, essential for patient care, are relatively unfamiliar to dentists, necessitating investigation for the development of continuing education strategies. This study aimed to map the literature on soft skills usage in dental practice, based on dental professionals' perceptions, acknowledging the importance of conducting a scoping review to understand the current research landscape and identify areas needing attention from researchers and educators. Methods: The research question was: "What are the soft skills investigated in dental practice?". Searches were conducted from November to December 2022 in the following electronic databases: virtual Health Library (BVS), National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE/PubMed), American Psychological Association (APA PsycNET), Scopus (Elsevier), and Portal Capes. Studies with dentists (public) who utilize soft skills (concept) in dental practice in both public and other settings (context), without language restrictions, between 2012 and 2022, were included. Results: After applying the inclusion criteria, 266 articles were included. There was an increasing trend in publications over the last decade (R2 = 0.699). The non-public sector was the most addressed (60.15%). The dimension of intrapersonal skills was the most investigated (37.22%), followed by interpersonal skills (27.44%), communication skills (22.56%), professional ethical values (9.4%), and managerial skills (3.38%). Conclusion: Research on soft skills in dental practice has surged in recent years, with a notable focus on intrapersonal skills. Nonetheless, the scarcity of literature on certain soft skills may impact the continuous education of professionals, highlighting the importance of stimulating further research in this area. This study aims to identify the characteristics of students during online learning, as well as evaluate their state and level of stress, anxiety, and depression using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS). This research is a descriptive survey research, namely to find out the psychological state of students of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of North Sumatra who are carrying out online learning using the depression anxiety stress scale questionnaire (DASS-42) which consists of stress, anxiety, and depression. This research was conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of North Sumatra which is located in Medan City, North Sumatra Province. This research was carried out from June 2021 to July 2021. Results, In terms of anxiety, 74.5% did not have difficulty swallowing, and moderate anxiety was the highest (31.2%). For depression, 66.8% did not feel that their lives were meaningless, with normal depression being the highest (50.6%). Stressors include learning tasks (72.5%), unavailability of practical tools (64.4%), limited internet quota (61.1%), and boredom with online learning (48.2%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose Health care professionals (HCPs) working collaboratively can improve patient outcomes and also increase their understanding of each other's professional roles. This descriptive study aimed to explore dental hygienists' perceptions of collaboration with dentists and intraprofessional educational (IntraPE) experiences. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to assess DHs perceptions of collaboration with dentists using the Interprofessional Collaboration Scale (ICS), a validated scale that measures perceptions of communication, accommodation, and isolation among HCPs. One open-ended question was added to explore IntraPE. Demographics, work characteristics and responses from the ICS were analyzed using frequency, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation, t-test, ANOVA, and multivariable regression. Responses from the open-ended question were transcribed, organized, and coded. Themes were identified using the Delve Qualitative Analysis Tool. Results Of the 264 participants, the average age was 38.9, and most identified as female (98.9%). Data analysis revealed that DHs had positive perceptions of collaboration with dentists. Significant relationships were found between ICS factor accommodation and the average number of patients treated per day (rs = -0.242, p<0.001), dentists' age (rs = -.145, p<0.05). Isolation showed a significant negative correlation with the average number of patients treated per day (rs = -0.156, p<0.05). Most reported having no opportunities for IntraPE education experiences with dentists. Five categories of themes were identified from the open-ended question: shared academic setting, clinic dentist, externships, desire for more shared learning, and shared patient experiences. Conclusion Dental hygienists in this study had an overall more positive than negative perception of collaboration with dentists. (1) Background: Musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs are a common medical condition among dental hygienists and dentists, making them a common occupational risk for dental professionals. The purpose of the work was to collect information about the dental professions and their habits to highlight what can be good practices to be carried out to prevent any musculoskeletal disorders. (2) Methods: To identify habits and problems inherent in the professional activity of dental hygienists and dentists, a questionnaire was formulated on the use of enlarging systems. (3) Results: The questionnaire was completed by 241 dental professionals. As for the use of magnifiers, 72.6% of participants use them: among dental hygienists, 67.8% use magnifiers, among dentists, 80.9% use magnifiers; there is a statistically significant difference. There is no statistically significant difference between professions regarding muscle disorders. (4) Conclusions: For a clearer assessment, it would be appropriate to submit the questionnaire to a wider sample of professionals, to define better the correlation between musculoskeletal disorders, work activity and the type of enlarging systems used. The objective of this research is to determine how informed consent is used in dental practice in southern Peru in the year 2023. The methodological design adopts a descriptive level with a mixed approach that is divided into two stages: The first consisted of a qualitative theoretical-analytical-rational analysis, followed by a subsequent empirical analysis with a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional approach. The study was carried out in a population of dentists who practice the dental profession in southern Peru in the year 2023 with a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 131 dentists. The main results were that the use of informed consent (14.5%) states that they do not use it in their daily consultation and (59.5%) use it in an erroneous way, due to different factors that influence this procedure and that the non-use of informed consent in its highest percentage arguing "lack of time" on the part of dentists It was concluded that there is a high rate of dental professionals who do not use informed consent in their professional practice, even more so that there is a high percentage that does not use consent correctly reported as an ethical-legal document. Background: Studies documenting the treatments used by dentists in the management of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have been undertaken in some countries; however, no such research has been conducted in Australia. No similar studies have been documented for physiotherapists. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the treatment options and referral patterns used by Australian dentists and physiotherapists in managing people with TMDs. Methods: Prospective nationwide online questionnaires targeting Australian dentists and physiotherapists were created for Australian dentists and physiotherapists. Results: Seventy‐eight respondents (27 dentists; 51 physiotherapists) completed all questions in the questionnaires. Sixty respondents reported actively treating people with TMDs. The treatment options used most frequently by dentists included advice and education, oral appliances, physical agents such as moist heat and medications. The treatment options most frequently used by physiotherapists included manual therapy, exercises, electrophysical agents and advice and education. Referrals were most frequently made to dentists and physiotherapists with experience and/or expertise in managing people with TMDs and to general dentists. Conclusions: Commonly used treatment options were mostly conservative, reversible and evidence‐based. More responses are required to draw conclusions representative of Australian dentists and physiotherapists in the management of people with TMDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The study explored the perceptions of final‐year Australian dental students, directors of nursing, and consumer representatives toward geriatric education provided at Australian undergraduate dental schools. Findings will strengthen and inform future curricula design for dental schools. Methods: Semi‐structured interviews and focus groups were conducted through videoconferencing and in‐person interviews, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Thematic analysis found the major themes to include relationships, curriculum variation, resources, and in‐service learning experiences. The participants found gaps in the current delivery of undergraduate dental education. Solutions included greater resourcing through funding and time allocated to supervisors and a curriculum dedicated to gerodontology. Conclusions: Healthcare professional curriculum design must consider the needs of the learners and stakeholders involved in the health of older people. The focus group participants found multiple barriers and gaps to achieving what is required to adequately prepare dental graduates for an older, frail, and care‐dependent population. For curricula to be successful, policymakers and education providers must find solutions to ensure that the oral health needs of older Australians are addressed and managed appropriately. Dental care accessibility is subject to a dentist's qualification, practice and intention to treat patients, regardless of whether those patients have special healthcare needs (SCN) and should receive treatment in a dental setting. This multicentre study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of patients with SCN, their access to dental care and behaviour towards dental care from their caregiver's perspective. In addition, the perspective of dental care providers who care for patients with SCN and the factors affecting the provision of treatment was also appraised. The Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia served as the site of this cross‐sectional study from 1 February 2020 to 31 January 2022. Caregivers of 272 patients with SCN, regardless of age and gender, were recruited in the study. The caregiver's proforma sought information on the demographic characteristics, type of disability, cooperation, medical history, occupation of the parent and patient's behaviour towards oral hygiene and dental healthcare. The second proforma had the dental care provider's perspective about the common disabilities, factors that affect the decision to provide treatment, difficulties patients face in getting their dental treatment and, from the dentist's experience, recommendations to improve the access to dental care for patients with SCN. Statistical analysis was carried out by using SPSS version 22.0. The demographic features, caregiver's perception about oral healthcare accessibility and dental professional's point of view were presented as frequencies and percentages. Chi‐square test was applied to compare the proportions. The majority of the caregivers were satisfied with the dental service providers (91.9%) for their patients with SCN. The dental care provider's survey results indicated a shortage of dentists (54.7%) in the region and other factors that pose challenges to special care, like the severity of the disability of patients with SCN (50%), family structure (46.7%), treatment cost (35.6%) and transportation (32.8%). Patients with SCN in Saudi Arabia had a high appraisal of access to dental care and were very satisfied with dental treatment results. However, the presence of a dental care provider in the same rehabilitation centre was a major concern. Introduction: Many patients consult general practitioners instead of dentists for their oral and dental problems every year. This study aims to find the reasons why patients consult general practitioners when they have dental problems. Methods: The sample consisted of patients visiting dentists and general practitioners in Kerman, Iran. A thematic interview guide, semi-structured questions, and a mind map that allowed for structured and open-ended questions were prepared and used for the interviews. All interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim by a final-year student. Data collection, transcription, and analysis were conducted simultaneously to allow for new topics to be raised and theoretical saturation to be reached. When researchers determined that sufficient information was available for analysis and understanding of patient opinions and beliefs, the interview process was stopped. As all audio conversations were recorded with the participant's permission, no note-taking was done during the interviews, which allowed for greater focus on the participants' conversation. The obtained data was analyzed using the content analysis. Results: A total of 52 patients were included in this study. The codes related to patients participating in this research, along with the number of respondent groups related to each code were as follows: patient's perceptions of general practitioner(GP) and dental practitioner's scope of work [21], flawed dental system (34), dental anxiety [28], financial considerations [25], and more accessibility to GPs (31). Dental abscesses and dental pain were reported as the most common reasons for consulting GPs. Conclusion: Most participants agreed that dental problems are more effectively treated by dentists. Reasons for visiting a general practitioner included lack of a specific dentist, dissatisfaction with dental treatments, lack of a dentist nearby, absence of emergency dental care, and familiarity with a physician. The most common reasons for visits were toothache and dental abscesses. Patients also sought treatment for TMJ pain, referred nerve pain, wisdom tooth pain, numbness and tingling in the jaw, gum inflammation, oral lesions, and ulcers. Background: The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) provides automatic access to subsidized dental care for eligible Australian children, but uptake is low. As cost is not a factor, socially constructed perceptions, which may be subscribed to without personal experience, were explored as potential barriers. Methods: Two studies with parents (child <18 years) were conducted. In Study one (N=317) participants completed a free‐response task eliciting socially constructed perceptions about the dentist. These were factor‐analysed in Study two (N=231), and the salience of these perceptions in relation to uptake was measured for the 113 eligible to access the CDBS participants. Results: In Study one, similar positive, negative, procedural and time words were elicited across conditions. Study two revealed Negative, Positive and Hassle perception factors associated with the dentist and that 61% of eligible participants had accessed the CDBS. Generalized Structural Equation Modelling with eligible participants revealed Positive and Negative perceptions were negatively correlated, Negative perceptions were positively correlated with Hassle, and, as Hassle increased, the probability of parents accessing the CDBS significantly decreased. Conclusions: Confusion around eligibility to access CDBS is still an issue. Low CDBS uptake may be associated with perceived hassle associated with the dentist, which may reflect parental negative perceptions. © 2024 Australian Dental Association. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Purpose Little is known about dentists’ preparedness in managing oral side effects in patients undergoing cancer therapy (CTx). The purpose of this systematic review is to identify barriers and facilitators of dentists in managing oral health of cancer patients (CPs). Methods The review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and was Prospero registered (CRD42022333055). CINAHL, Embase, Medline, PsycInfo and Scopus databases were searched using keywords and MeSH terms: dentists, oral health, cancer. The outcomes were analysed descriptively and thematically. Results Of the 2303 articles screened 53 met eligibility criteria. Most of articles (n = 50) reported on head and neck cancer (HNC) management. Dentists’ oral cancer (OC) knowledge varied across studies (27% to 81%, n = 35). Regardless of their knowledge level, the majority of dentists expressed interest in further cancer education. Across studies, dentists perceived that their role included providing dental treatment for OC patients. However, of the few studies (n = 3) that explored dentists’ confidence in managing CPs, less than half of dentists felt confident providing advice to patients with HNC. More barriers than facilitators are identified in providing dental care provision to CPs. Conclusion This review demonstrates gap in dental care for patients with non-HNCs and highlights a need for methods to involve dentists in managing dental health of CPs.

Apart from being a mean of making a living and achieving a certain social status, professions may also be considered a calling. The dentist's career is not only a vocation of high social prestige but also one which requires a high level of responsibility, physical and psychological load. Professional satisfaction reflects how meaningful a person finds their vocation, but this is based on the resources that the individual has invested (time for education and skill development, financial resources, effort, etc.). Hence, professional and financial satisfactions constitute complex and multifaceted phenomena. The aim of the study is to analyze the degree of professional and financial satisfaction in dentists as well as to give suggestions suitable for its improvement.

ABSTRACT: Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the process of becoming an independent dentist, extending beyond the entry-level period. Materials and methods: Fifteen general dental practitioners were interviewed. The recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim, and utilizing Colaizzi's descriptive phenomenological method, we sought to exclude subjectivity and derive meanings and themes from participants’ experiences concerning the process of becoming independent dentists. Results: The study identified 3 phases in the process of developing as an independent dentist: (1) the foundation phase, involving dental training as a student under faculty supervision; (2) the extension phase, expanding experience as an entry-level dentist; (3) the equilibrium phase, characterized by providing stable dental care based on diverse experience and professionalism. Conclusion: Becoming an independent dentist entails more than unsupervised treatment provision; it involves developing the professionalism necessary for delivering quality dental care through deliberate practice and reflection. Clinical Relevance: The study outlines the stages of transitioning to an independent dentist, spanning foundational training, entry-level experience, and achieving stable care provision. Emphasizing the importance of professionalism and reflection, it provides a valuable framework for enhancing dental education and on-going professional development, fostering both technical proficiency and a commitment to quality patient care.

If a clinical diagnosis is achievable, then a histopathological diagnosis is indicated to support and confirm the diagnosis. Histopathological examination of tissue biopsies is therefore an essential part of the diagnosis and/or treatment plan. The purpose of this study was to investigate the agreement between the clinical and histopathological diagnoses of oral and maxillofacial lesions and the patient, lesion, and healthcare provider factors that may affect this agreement.Patients and Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional study of all patients who had been referred to the Oral Pathology Central Laboratory at the Faculty of Dentistry and University Dental Hospital at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between 2018 and 2022 for diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial lesions. Data extracted included information about the referring dental provider such as their clinical experience (number of years), specialty, certification, and education. Agreement between the clinical and histopathological diagnoses was evaluated, and logistic regression was used to assess provider characteristics associated with the accuracy of diagnosis.Results: The clinical and pathological diagnoses were concordant in 44.1% (n=378) of cases, and concordance was highest for odontogenic tumors (72.7%, n=24), significantly higher than for inflammatory lesions (37.3%, n=111). The anatomical locations with the highest diagnostic accuracy were the ventral surface of the tongue (71.4%, n=5), followed by the lips (52.6%, n=20). Patient age and sex and the dentist’s years of experience were not associated with diagnostic agreement (p=0.2, p=0.9, and p=0.08, respectively). However, concordant diagnoses were significantly associated with the dentist’s rank (p=0.02) and specialty (p=0.01). Clinical diagnoses made by oral surgeons at the time of biopsy were 1.6-times more likely (p=0.01) to agree with the pathological diagnosis compared with those made by other specialties when controlling for education, certification, and years of experience.Conclusion: These data are a reminder that a clinical diagnosis alone is not sufficient to secure the final diagnosis and to plan treatment. Abstract Purpose In the realm of restorative dentistry, the integration of virtual reality haptic simulation (VRHS) for learning operative skills has garnered varied perceptions among dental students. Therefore, the aim of this study was to delve deep into undergraduates dental students’ perceptions related to the impact of VRHS in pre-clinical restorative dentistry. Methods A homogeneous purposive sampling method was utilized to gather data from third-year undergraduate dental students (n = 23) at the College of Dental Medicine, Qatar University, to thoroughly investigate their views on the impact of VRHS on their learning experience in preparing a standard class I cavity. An explorative qualitative method using face-to-face focus group sessions were conducted in English during 2023. Focus group sessions were recorded and transcribed using Microsoft Teams. Two authors independently read the transcripts, coded the text, and manually analyzed text using an inductive thematic approach. Results A total of 21 (91.3%) students participated in this study. Analysis of 3 focus group interviews revealed five primary themes summarized with the term “MASTR” (M = manual dexterity, A = assessment, S = sequence, T = training, and R = realism). Based on frequency of reported themes, students perceived realism/ lifelike nature of VRHS requiring further enhancement to achieve the desired learning objective. Conclusion Although, VRHS play a crucial role in modern dental education, offering innovative solutions for training, evaluation, and feedback, the need to enhance their ability to simulate real-life dental procedures and learning environment (realism), coupled with interactive and immersive learning experiences were the most frequently raised theme by students. In terms of curriculum design and learning pedagogies, dental educators should consider the appropriate sequence when integrating VRHS within the undergraduate curricula.

Abstract: Objective: Pigmented fungiform papillae of the tongue (PFPT) are infrequently encountered and inadequately documented pigmented lesions that pose challenges in diagnosis and subsequent treatment planning. The study was aimed at analyzing dentists' knowledge and attitudes regarding PFPT morphologies, to determine diagnosis and subsequent treatment planning. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among dentists in East Java through an online questionnaire. Four clinical photographs of PFPT were presented, accompanied by seven questions assessing dentists' knowledge of PFPT, including lesion types, tongue structure involvement, Holzwanger classification, lesion patterns, suspected diagnoses and the nature of the lesion (benign or malignant). Purpose This study investigated the knowledge differences between general practitioners and orthodontists about the Invisalign system.Materials and methods A web-based survey regarding 10 Invisalign treatment domains was distributed to 161 orthodontists and 213 general practitioners. The responses were ranked using a Likert-type scale and analysed with the Chi-square test and Bonferroni adjustment.Results The response rate was 52.1% for general practitioners and 63.4% for orthodontists. Comparing Invisalign to conventional fixed appliances, orthodontists agreed/strongly agreed that Invisalign aligners are suitable for all types of cases (p = 0.001). Aim: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) comprise ailments involving the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint) and its associated anatomical structures. The complexity involved in TMD is primarily due to its broad spectrum of conditions, clinical signs and symptoms variability, and multifactorial etiology. Considering the above, the present study was performed to help understand the prevailing knowledge and awareness of TMD among Indian dentists in the context of the new specialty “orofacial pain”. Settings and Design: Questinnaire study and review. Materials and Methods: The questionnaire was distributed using a web-based portal nationwide among Indian dentists. Dentists were invited to participate, clearly stating that the intent and purpose of the questionnaire was to record the existing knowledge and awareness concerning temporomandibular disorders among Indian dentists. The questionnaire was segregated into three sections: pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of TMDs. The questions were recorded using a Likert three-point scale (1=agree; 2=disagree; 3=not aware). 310 dentists participated in the survey, among which 105 were general dentists (BDS [Bachelor of Dental Surgery] graduates), and 205 were dentists with specialist training (MDS [Masters of Dental Surgery] graduates). Statistical Analysis Used: The results obtained from the study participants was used to calculate the percentage and frequency, following which tabulations were made based on graduate type and clinical experience. The values obtained from all three sections were recorded, and the responses were analysed using Pearson’s Chi-Square test with statistical significance kept at P < 0.05. Results: Results of the study disclosed that only 58.1% of general dentists and 46.8% of specialists were confident in handling temporomandibular disorder patients. Splint therapy was the preferred treatment modality for general dentists, whereas dentists with specialist training preferred occlusal rehabilitation. Conclusion: The results of the current survey indicate that Indian dentists lack sufficient training in dental schools on all three sections and face difficulty diagnosing and treating TMDs.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on general practitioner (GP), specialist, and dentist visits among 40 million Iranians covered by the Social Security Organization (SSO). A monthly interrupted time series analysis was conducted over a period of 72 months, including—47 months before the pandemic and 25 months after its onset. The outcomes variables were monthly number of GP, specialist, and dentist visits per 1000 SSO-insured individuals. The analysis was performed by total visits, visits to the SSO direct sector, and visits to the indirect sectors. The study found that in the first month of the pandemic, the number of visits per 1000 insured individuals significantly decreased for visits to GPs (by 51.12, 95% CI −64.42 to −37.88), visits to specialists (by 39.11, 95% CI −51.61 to −26.62), and visits to dentists (by 6.67, 95% CI −8.55 to −4.78). However, during the subsequent months of the pandemic, there was a significant increase in the number of monthly visits for all three categories, with GPs experiencing the highest increase (1.78 visits per 1000 insured), followed by specialists (1.32 visits per 1000 insured), and dentists (0.05 visits per 1000 insured). Furthermore, prior to the pandemic, the number of monthly GP visits per 1000 insured individuals was statistically significantly lower in the indirect sector compared to the direct sector (45.79, 95% CI −52.69 to −38.89). Conversely, the direct sector exhibited lower rates of specialist visits (25.84 visits per 1000 insured individuals, 95% CI 22.87 to 28.82) and dentist visits (0.75 visits per 1000 insured individuals, 95% CI 0.12 to 1.36) compared to the indirect sector. Additionally, the study found that in the first month of the pandemic, the monthly number of GP visits in the indirect sector significantly increased by 34.44 times (95% CI 24.81 to 44.08) compared to the direct sector. For specialist visits and dentist visits, the increase was 3.41 (95% CI −5.87 to 12.69) and 5.01 (95% CI 3.48 to 6.53) per 1000 insured individuals, respectively. Overall, the findings of this study demonstrate statistically significant disruptions in GP, specialist, and dentist visits during the COVID-19 pandemic, although some recovery was observed. Both the direct and indirect sectors experienced decreased visits.

Introduction: Access to dental services is a challenge for lower to middle-income individuals. Tukang gigi, an alternative to dentists, offers more affordable oral health care. Governed by Ministry of Health Regulation No. 39 of 2014, tukang gigi's authority is limited to acrylic dentures. However, evidence shows unauthorized practices, posing health risks like misdiagnosis and complications. This not only jeopardizes patient health but also undermines the credibility of the dental health profession, eroding public trust. Purposes of the Research: The aim of the research is to find out the legality of dental practices that exceed their authority with a policy approach to the community's need for cheap access to health Methods of the Research: The research employs a literature study method, specifically normative legal research, focusing on legal norms in laws and regulations. Following a systematic process of collecting, reading, recording, and analyzing library data, the study adopts a doctrinal legal research approach. The emphasis is on elaborating and explaining collected data related to the main research topics. Results of the Research: The current law limits tukang gigi to making and installing detachable dentures that meet health standards. However, tukang gigi often put braces, remove tartar, and color braces outside their allowed scope. Therefore, tukang gigi are not accountable for their activities, leaving consumers or service users vulnerable to malpractice. Despite benefiting from dental artisan work, consumers are ignorant of legal protections when these practitioners breach government rules. Tukang gigi often break the law owing to a lack of information or compliance, so they are at risk without legal protection. In contrast to Spain, where denturists cannot practice dentistry. Only dentists and dental technicians are legally recognized in Spain. This is because dentistry skill requires strict requirements. Dental professionals monitor actions closely to reduce misconduct. Dental care is affordable.

Aims: Medicines, which have an important place in health services, are the greatest weapon of societies in preventing and combating diseases. If medicines are not used properly, they may not provide the expected effect and may lead to recurrence of some diseases, development of resistance or some side effects. In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the number, variety and utilization rates of medicines. This situation has necessitated more rational behavior in the use of medicines, especially by healthcare professionals. Rational drug use can be briefly defined as the administration of appropriate medication in the light of anamnesis and clinical symptoms. Education on rational drug use remains as current in the dental profession as it is in the medical world. In order to determine the extent to which dentists meet the expectations regarding rational drug use and to eliminate possible problems, it is first necessary to determine their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors on the subject. In this study, it was aimed at comparing and evaluating the attitudes and behaviors of dentists towards rational drug use. Methods: Our study, which was approved by the ethics committee, was conducted with the participation of 399 volunteer dentists actively working in public hospitals and the private sector in different provinces of our country. The data for the study were obtained through an online questionnaire consisting of 15 questions. The IBM SPSS 25.0 package program was used for data analysis of the survey results. A frequency distribution table was created for general characteristics. A chi-square test was used to compare the relationship between categorical variables. Results: It was determined that 50.6% of the participants received rational drug use training, 91.5% utilized different sources of information while prescribing, 73.4% did not prescribe drugs requested by patients, and 43.6% did not find the information given to patients about drugs sufficient. When the reasons for this were questioned, lack of information and lack of time were mostly cited. It was found that the level of knowledge of the participants about drugs was mostly focused on indications, route of administration, special conditions, and contraindications. When prescribing medications, the participants generally questioned whether the patients had chronic diseases, drug allergies, and other medications. It was observed that dentists mostly provided information about the duration of treatment, daily dosage, and method of administration regarding the drugs they prescribed. Conclusion: The basis of irrational drug use in dentistry lies in a lack of knowledge and education. In order to obtain the expected benefit from drugs, we believe that, in addition to instilling awareness of rational drug use in society, the attitudes and behaviors gained, especially by physicians through undergraduate education and in-service training after graduation, should be supported by health policies. Introduction: Occupational burnout has been introduced as one of the most critical social problems. The present study aimed to evaluate occupational burnout among a group of Iranian endodontists. Material and Methods: Seventy-two Iranian endodontists participated in this cross-sectional study by completing the abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory (aMBI), consisting of one questionnaire in three domains. The data were analyzed with SPSS 21, using the chi-squared test, correlation test, and linear regression. Results: Concerning occupational burnout, 2.9% of the participants had severe emotional exhaustion, 4.2% exhibited an intense feeling of decreased accomplishment, 67.2% exhibited moderate occupational burnout, and 78.9% of the participants were satisfied with their job. Of all the variables, only the years elapsed since graduation had an inverse and significant correlation with occupational burnout among endodontists. Conclusion: The overall mean scores of endodontists showed a moderate rate of occupational burnout compared to the standard mean scores in this field. Recent graduates exhibited higher scores. Objectives: Our aim was to demonstrate the occurrence of post-radiotherapy side effects- even in the case of using intensively modulated therapy (IMRT) in patients with ENT cancer as its are: radiomucositis, dental caries, osteoradionecrosis, the increase in the size of the existing periapical lesions before radiotherapy, dysphagia, dysgeusia. Materials and methods: Our study included 35 cancer patients age between 32-81 years old with ENT cancer- neoplasm of larynx, oropharynx, oral cavity, nasopharynx, hypopharynx, sinuses; under treatment at the Regional Institute of Oncology, Iasi. They were examinated by one dental generalist, two endodontist, one radiologist, one doctor specialized in radiotherapy and an ENT doctor before and after radiotherapy. We used as irradiation dose between 50-70 Gy. Results: All patients suffered from various forms of cancer; the majority (40%) presented a neoplasm of the larynx, 8 patients (22,9%) presented a neoplasm of oropharynx, 6 patients (17,1%) presented a neoplasm of the oral cavity. Other forms of neoplasm found were nasopharynx, hypopharynx and respectively sinus neoplasm (1 case). The vast majority of the patients presented radiomucositis grade 2 (34,3%) and 3 (45,7%). The distribution of the localization of periapical lesions changed before and after radiotherapy. Osteoradionecrosis was initially diagnosed in 3 of the 35 patients (8,6%); after radiotherapy osteoradionecrosis was diagnosed in 6 patients (17,1%). We did not identify a statistically significant relationship between the dose of radiation administered and the degree of radiomucositis. Disscusions: Our retrospective study reported a frequency of 40% cancer of the larynx, 22,9% cancer of the oropharynx and 17,1% neoplasm of the oral cavity, followed by cancer of the nasopharynx, hypopharynx and sinus neoplasm out of a total of 35 patients taken into account. Taking into account the fact that the patients received an irradiation dose between 70 Gy (65,7%)- 66 Gy (22,9%), the degree of radiomucositis was mainly 2 (34,3%) or 3 (45,7%). We observed an increase in the diameter of the periapical lesions after radiotherapy associated with the dose of radiation administered. Areas with osteoradionecrosis revealed the same tendency of increase in their comparative analysis after the applied irradiation doses. Conclusions: The management of the side effects of radiotherapy can be managed favorably for the oncological patient through a close collaboration between the general dentist, ENT and the radiotherapist. Introduction: Dentists need to use personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect themselves from virus transmission, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, PPE wear causes prolonged preparation time, the limitation of visual and motion range, and dehydration. It may cause an increase in stress and fatigue. The purpose of this study was to observe the correlation between stress and fatigue levels in Indonesian dentists wearing a full set of PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: This study was conducted on 311 dentists. The levels of fatigue and stress were measured with the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), respectively. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman's correlation, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Wilcoxon tests. Results: A moderate relationship was found in the correlation between stress and fatigue levels (rs: 0.412). There was no difference between females and males in stress (p: 0.170) and fatigue (p: 0.558) levels. There was no difference between age groups in stress (p: 0.080) but a significant difference was found in fatigue level (p: 0.000). A significant difference was found prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic in total working days per week (p: 0.000), total working hours per day (p: 0.000), and the mean total of patients per day (p: 0.000). Conclusion: Stress was correlated with fatigue in Indonesian dentists wearing a full set of PPE. Background: Patients presenting with dental pain are common in general practice, despite dental infections being most appropriately managed with dental treatment to address the cause of the infection. Although antibiotics are not appropriate for the management of localised toothache without signs of systemic spread, general practitioners (GPs) often prescribe antibiotics and analgesics for the management of dental pain. The aim of this study was to explore GPs' perceptions and management of dental presentations in Australia. Methods: Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with GPs across Victoria, Australia, between October 2022 and January 2023. Data were thematically analysed. Results: The study found that dental pain was the most common presenting complaint for patients attending general practice with a dental problem. Five major themes were identified in this study: knowledge, beliefs about capabilities, emotion, environmental context and resources, and social influences/social professional role and identity. In terms of knowledge and capabilities, GPs would advise patients to seek dental care, as they are aware that antibiotics would not resolve the underlying issue. Challenges for GPs included limited training in oral and dental treatment, as well as emotions, such as patient anxiety and phobia resulting in patients seeking dental care through a GP rather than a dentist. Barriers due to the context, such as access to dental care, long waiting lists within the public dental system and cost, were some of the reasons patients present to general practice rather than a seeing a dentist. Furthermore, issues that influenced GPs' antibiotic prescribing included patients' expectations for antibiotics to treat their dental pain, as well as dentists advising their patients to attend their GP for antibiotics prior to dental treatment. Conclusions: This study identified factors that influenced GPs' management of patients with dental conditions. To address these issues, it is imperative to develop interventions addressing patients' knowledge around oral health, as well as providing improved access to dental care for these patients. Patients with dental pain often seek treatment from general practitioners (GPs), even though the problem often requires dental treatment rather than antibiotics and/or pain relief medications. This study looked at GPs' management of patients with dental problems, and identified barriers as to why patients would see a GP instead of a dentist. Understanding these reasons will help develop interventions to better educate patients in oral health, and provide better access to dental care to patients with oral conditions. Background This study investigates the association between dental insurance, income, and dental care access for Canadian children and youth aged 1 to 17 years. It contributes to a baseline understanding of oral health care use before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Data and methods This study used data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth (n=47,347). Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were employed to assess the association of dental insurance, adjusted family net income, and other sociodemographic factors on oral health care visits and costrelated avoidance of oral health care. Results A large percentage of children under the age of 5 had never visited a dentist (79.8% of 1-year-olds to 16.4% of 4-year-olds). Overall, 89.6% of Canadian children and youth aged 5 to 17 had visited a dental professional within the past 12 months: 93.1% of those who were insured and 78.5% of those who were uninsured. Insured children and youth had a 4.5% cost-related avoidance of dental care, contrasting with 23.3% for uninsured children and youth. After adjustment for sociodemographic variables, children and youth with dental insurance were nearly three times more likely (odds ratio [OR]: 2.94; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.60 to 3.33) to have visited a dental professional in the past 12 months than uninsured children and youth. Having dental insurance (OR: 0.19; 95% CI: 0.16 to 0.21) was protective against barriers to seeing a dental professional because of cost. There was a strong income gradient for both dental service outcomes. Interpretation The study emphasizes the significant association of dental insurance and access to oral health care for children and youth. Background: Equity in health refers to ensuring that individuals have timely and sufficient access to healthcare services when needed. Human resources are a vital component of healthcare organizations, and they play a crucial role in improving people's access to services. Dentists, in particular, are essential healthcare professionals as oral and dental health significantly impacts overall societal health. This study aims to investigate the key factors contributing to the inequality in the distribution of dentists. Methods: A scoping review was conducted, systematically searching three databases—Scopus, PubMed, and WOS—using relevant keywords until January, 2023. A total of 565 preliminary results were screened, and 447 titles and abstracts were reviewed. Ultimately, 23 full-text articles were included in the analysis. Qualitative content analysis and thematic network were used to synthesize the extracted data. Results: Thematic analysis of the evidence yielded four main themes that contribute to inequality in the distribution of dentists: the development of the inequality situation, methods for analyzing inequality, causes of inequality, and potential solutions to address inequality. Conclusion: Policymakers should gain an understanding of the determinants that contribute to inequality and how these factors manifest in their respective countries. Policymakers can work towards achieving a more equitable distribution of dentists by directing resources towards policies and measures that improve access to oral and dental services. This will ultimately enhance overall societal access to oral healthcare services.

Background and Purpose: Fear and anxiety related to dental and healthcare procedures are common among young adults and can negatively impact dental and healthcare consumership, resulting in poor health outcomes. Purpose: This cross-sectional study aimed to examine young adults’ experiences of fear related to dental and healthcare procedures and the potential relationships between the two forms of fear experiences and demographic factors. Methods: Young adults (252) were recruited from a large public university and completed a survey about their dental and healthcare fear/anxiety as well as their confidence in healthcare professionals. Descriptive and correlational analyses were completed to describe the experiences of young adults and the relationships between variables. Results: Ten types of fear/anxiety were identified related to healthcare procedures, with the most common being needles and pain. Nine fears/anxieties were identified for dental visits, of which pain and sensory experiences other than pain were most common. Female participants were significantly more likely to report fear/anxiety related to dental procedures, and there was a statistically significant relationship between fear/anxiety related to healthcare procedures and that related to dental procedures. There was also a significant negative relationship found between confidence in healthcare providers and fear/anxiety related to healthcare procedures. Conclusions: Young adults experience fear/anxiety related to healthcare and dentist visits, and this fear/anxiety can impact their confidence in healthcare providers, such as primary physicians. The findings of the current study suggest primary care providers should be aware of potential fears/anxieties and offer patients appropriate supports.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the dentists’ knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and code blue application (CBA). Methods: The study was conducted among 210 dentists working in the public hospitals or dental faculty in Kayseri. The study included 165 dentists who volunteered to respond the survey questions. Participants were asked 19 questions about their demographics, as well as their knowledge and experience of CPR and CBA. The dataset was statistically evaluated. Results: It was determined that 43.6% of the participants had used CBA before, and 70.3% of the participants were capable of giving the code blue. The participants' rates of experiencing cardiac arrest cases anywhere or in their dental practice were 15.2% and 0.6%, respectively. After graduation, 69.7% of the participants received CPR training; however, only 6.7% performed CPR. 61.2%, 55.2%, and 57.6% of participants correctly answered questions about chest compression rate, chest compression/respiration ratio, and application site, respectively. It was found that participants with 1 to 5 years of professional experience answered the questions more accurately. Conclusion: The participants in the study had a lack of knowledge regarding CPR and CBA. As a result, CPR training for dentists should begin in the undergraduate years and continue in the postgraduate years. Introduction: Saliva has a key role in protecting the oral environment and functions such as chewing, swallowing, lack of saliva can cause many problems and suffering for patients and affect people's quality of life. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the level of awareness of dentists in Yazd City regarding the causes and symptoms and how to treat dry mouth in 2022-2023. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 125 dentists of Yazd City were selected by convenience sampling method. A valid and reliable questionnaire was designed. The data were analyzed using t-test and ANOVA statistical tests and SPSS V.16. Results: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 125 dentists in Yazd City; they were selected by convenience sampling method, 65 of them were male (51.2%) and 60 were female (48.8%). The average of age, work experience and knowledge score of the examined dentists were 33.46±7.27, 6.79±6.57 and 15.24±2.90, respectively. There was no statistically significant relationship between knowledge score and gender and work experience and participate in retraining with P = 0.323, P = 0.120 and P = 0.167, respectively. But there was a statistically significant relationship between the knowledge score and age and university of study with P = 0.030 and P = 0.034. People with older age and educated in type 1 university had more knowledge about dry mouth. Conclusion: The results showed that the dentists of Yazd City had average knowledge about the causes, symptoms and how to treat xerostomia. And it is necessary to cooperate in holding refresher courses in this field.

Providing dental care to the population is associated with the active introduction of new technologies, personnel management methods, and business processes. In this sense, dentistry is at the forefront of the development of medicine and other economic sectors. However, the active practical implementation of advanced technologies for the provision of dental services requires personnel to have increased motivation and highly qualified labor, to develop new protocols for patient management, and to use more advanced equipment and materials, while administrative and management personnel should introduce progressive methods of labor motivation and economic and mathematical models of material and moral stimulation. This research aims to create an innovative business model for the development of a commercial dental clinic (CDC) that provides paid dental services. Economic and mathematical modeling and nonlinear programming are aimed at maximizing dentists’ wages, together with financial incentives for the work of administrative and managerial personnel and deductions for the development of a typical commercial dental clinic in Moscow based on the actual volume of dental services and the costs of their provision. With the volume of paid dental services growing by one and a half times, the innovative business model makes it possible to increase clinic income by a factor of 1.66 and dentists’ salaries by a factor of 2.24, raise deductions for labor incentives for administrative and managerial personnel by a factor of 1.66, and increase total profit by a factor of 1.75. During the research, it was possible to ensure early repayment of a loan of 5 million rubles for clinic development in 21 months. Introduction: To evaluate the manual dexterity of dentistry students and academicians when using a mirror according to increasing professional experience. Materials and Methods: The study included 72 subjects, grouped according to professional experience 5th year dentistry students (DS) accepted as no experience—academicians with 1–4 years experience (A5L)—academicians with ≥5 years experience (A5M). Direct and indirect visualisation using the mirror was evaluated with the completion times of the O'Connor Finger Dexterity Test. Results: The hand grip strength values of both left and right hand were found to be statistically significantly higher in all the males than in the females (p <.05). The indirect test times (ITT) using the mirror were significantly longer for males than for females (p =.001), and no significant difference was determined between the genders in the direct test times (DTT) (p >.05). For all the study participants, DTT shortened as professional experience increased (p <.05). In addition, the mean values of both DTT (p =.031) and ITT (p =.028) in the DS group were statistically significantly longer than the A5M group. Conclusion: With increasing professional experience, manual dexterity was determined to increase, and females were found to be more successful in the direct manual dexterity tests independently of the groups. The statistical significance between the DS and A5M groups, especially in the hand dexterity test with a mirror, shows the importance of experience. Background: Child maltreatment, the abuse or neglect of children aged 0–18 years, is a severe and underreported global problem. Compared with other body parts, the orofacial region displays more signs of child maltreatment. Dentists and dental hygienists are therefore well situated to identify orofacial signs of child maltreatment. Aim: To map the current literature on orofacial signs of child maltreatment identified by dentists or dental hygienists. Design: A scoping review was conducted based on systematic searches of Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), and CINAHL (EBSCOhost) for primary qualitative and quantitative studies through June 6, 2022. Results: Twenty‐nine studies were included in this scoping review. Though all child maltreatment types were identified in dental settings, physical abuse and dental neglect were most commonly identified. Reports of caries dominated the orofacial signs, followed by bruises (intra‐ and extraoral), poor oral hygiene, dental trauma, and lacerations (intra‐ and extraoral). Case reports were used most commonly to describe orofacial signs of child maltreatment. Conclusion: Dental clinicians identify orofacial signs of all child maltreatment types intraorally. Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI) is inevitably going to impact healthcare including dentistry and will become an essential tool in medical diagnosis and decision-making. Dental professionals must be familiar with growing trends in dentistry such as AI and its future scope. Despite the positive developments in AI research, there are divergent perspectives on its benefits and risks among stakeholders. We intended to understand the knowledge, awareness, and perceptions of dental professionals towards AI and its applications in dentistry. Material and Methods:A semi-structured, 25-item Google form questionnaire consisting of closed and open-ended questions was made and the link to answer the survey was circulated among postgraduate students, dental academicians, and practitioners across India in an online mode, and the responses were collected and analyzed. Results: 83.3% of participants were aware of AI and its applications. Most of the participants understood the attributes, advantages, and disadvantages of AI. Interestingly 72% of participants agreed that they have witnessed AI being used in clinical practice and 92.7% agreed to use AI for diagnosis. 65.3% expressed concern over unemployment due to AI and 85% agreed that AI has ethical issues. Over 85% of participants agreed AI should be a part of the postgraduate dental curriculum. Conclusion:We found that dental professionals are updated with AI technology and showed a willingness to adopt AI into dental practice. The participants lacked a deeper understanding of AI and concerned about the potential risk of unemployment resulting from AI and trusting AI alone in dental diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
