Abstract

An enigmatic coral mushroom is identified that has produced both fertile and sterile fruiting structures as the closest free-living relative of the G4 fungi, thus challenging the monopoly of the Apterostigma-cultivated fungi. Both nonparametric bootstrap and Bayesian posterior probability has supported the node leading to the G4 cultivars and a free-living Pterula mushroom, suggesting tree scenarios that contradict the hypothesis of strict coevolution.

27. Cortinariussubgenus Callisteiin North America and Europe—type studies, diversity, and distribution of species

Abstract

Five species of Cortinariussubgenus Callistei, are recognized in Europe and North America. Cortinarius callisteus, C. infucatus, and C. neocallisteussp. nov. have a broad distribution, extending from western North America to Europe. Cortinarius tofaceusis known from eastern North America and Europe, while C. callisteisp. is known only from one locality in Sweden. All five species are primarily associated with coniferous trees. Previously the species were included either in subgenus Leprocybeor subgenus Cortinarius, but recently they have been separated into subgenus Callisteibased on molecular data. Type specimens of the names associated with this subgenus were studied and a neotype proposed for C. tofaceusand an epitype for C. infucatus. Barcodes for the species are deposited in RefSeq and UNITE.

Abstract

Boletus albobrunnescensand B. austroedulisare described as new species in section Boletusfrom Thailand and Australia respectively. The former is easily characterized by the pure white basidiomata that stain brown. Boletus austroedulishas a gray-brown, slightly rugulose pileus with hymeniform pileipellis producing pileocystidia, and the stipe is only apically reticulate if at all. These new species represent ancient lineages inferred from prior molecular phylogenetic analyses.
