Background COVID-19 caused widespread disruptions to health services worldwide, including reductions in elective surgery. Tooth extractions are among the most common reasons for elective surgery among children and young people (CYP). It is unclear how COVID-19 affected elective dental surgeries in hospitals over multiple pandemic waves at a national level. Methods Elective dental tooth extraction admissions were selected using Hospital Episode Statistics. Admission trends for the first 14 pandemic months were compared with the previous five years and results were stratified by age (under-11s, 11–16s, 17–24s). Results The most socioeconomically deprived CYP comprised the largest proportion of elective dental tooth extraction admissions. In April 2020, admissions dropped by >95%. In absolute terms, the biggest reduction was in April (11–16s: −1339 admissions, 95% CI −1411 to −1267; 17–24s: −1600, −1678 to −1521) and May 2020 (under-11s: −2857, −2962 to −2752). Admissions differed by socioeconomic deprivation for the under-11s (P  < 0.0001), driven by fewer admissions than expected by the most deprived and more by the most affluent during the pandemic. Conclusion Elective tooth extractions dropped most in April 2020, remaining below pre-pandemic levels throughout the study. Abstract Objectives The objective of this study is to compare a nutritionally balanced soft blend diet (SBD) with a soft fluid diet (SFD) on the health of inpatients who have undergone oral and maxillofacial (OMF) surgery, ultimately aiming to enhance care outcomes, improve health-related quality of life (QOL), and increase satisfaction with the hospital. Methods Thirty-two patients were randomized into two groups: sixteen received SFD and sixteen received SBD. Anthropometric, laboratory evaluations were conducted upon admission and discharge. Patients filled out questionnaires on demographics, diet satisfaction, food intake amount, and health-related QOL on the day of discharge, assessed using the EuroQoL 5 Dimensions 3 Level and EuroQoL Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS) instruments. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, χ2 tests for group differences, and paired nonparametric t-tests for within-group comparisons. The Mann-Whitney U test evaluated inter-group differences in preoperative weight and body mass index (BMI), postoperative changes, meal satisfaction, intake, health-related QOL, and self-assessed health status. P-values were set at a significance level of 0.05. Results The SBD group had higher dietary intake (63.2% vs. 51.0%) and greater diet satisfaction (80.6 vs. 48.1, P < 0.0001) compared to SFD group. Health-related QOL, measured by EQ-VAS, was better in SBD group (70.3 vs. 58.8, P < 0.05). Postoperative weight and BMI decreased in SFD group but increased in SBD group (P < 0.01). Changes in laboratory results showed more stability in the SBD group. No postoperative infections were reported in SBD group, whereas SFD group had a 31.25% complication rate. Conclusions While SFD is often recommended after OMF surgery to protect oral wound healing process, our study reveals that SBD not only enhances physical and psychological outcomes but also, somewhat unexpectedly, supports wound healing and reduces complications. Essentially, SBD promotes physical recovery and enhances health-related QOL than SFD by supporting both somatic and mental healing aspects.

Aim: The aim of this study was to identify and appraise the bibliometric properties of top 100 most-cited articles on regenerative periodontics surgery (RPS). Materials and Methods: The bibliometric research technique was conducted using a dataset comprising the 100 highly cited articles obtained from Elsevier’s Scopus database on RPS. Information regarding the growth of articles by year, number of citations, citations per year, study design, study field, modalities, journals, authors, and countries were extracted for each article. Microsoft Excel (v.16) was utilized for data evaluation and tabulation. These articles on RPS were published over a span of 45 years, from 1975 to 2019, with citation metrics ranging from 144 to 820. Out of the 422 participating authors, 82% contributed to a single article. Results: The 100 most cited articles on RPS were published in 45 years from 1975 to 2019 and number of citations ranged from 144 to 820. Out of the 422 participating authors, 82% contributed in a single article.. The study design with the highest number of cited articles was laboratory/animal studies. Others/not specified was the preferred modality, followed by infrabony modality. The Journal of Periodontology published about one-fourth of the articles, with W. V. Giannobile emerging as the most productive author. Among the 100 most-cited articles on RPS, authors from 25 different countries contributed, with the United States producing half of the articles (n = 51). Bibliometric investigation revealed that the most cited papers published before 2000 had higher citation counts due to their longer period of exposure. The ratio of authors per article increased after the year 2000. Conclusions: Infrabony emerges as a trending topic in RPS, with laboratory/animal studies, clinical trials, and literature reviews being the most frequently employed study designs. Material and methods Patients newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma (n = 144) referred between January 2015 and September 2022 were retrospectively included. The patients underwent a thorough clinical and radiological oral examination and odontogenic infections were treated before the start of bisphosphonate treatment. The patients were followed annually, including clinical and radiological examinations. The oral health related quality of life was investigated by the OHIP-14 questionnaire. Results Dental treatment (RR = 7.75), receiving combination antineoplastic therapy≥3 (RR =4.13), periodontitis (RR = 4.21), and reduced number of teeth (RR = 2.87) were associated with an increased risk of medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw. The response rate of the OHIP-14 questionnaire was 70.2%. Oral pain or discomfort in the mouth related to the medical treatment was reported by 30.5%. Conclusion Dental screening and treatment planning in patients with Multiple Myeloma may result in fewer oral infections and fewer interruptions of the medical treatment of myeloma.

A new method for positioning mini-implants in orthodontic patients with tooth position anomalies (ICD-10 K07.3) using a navigation surgical template is proposed. The template is used to position a mini-implant precisely based on the visualization results of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), which facilitates safe and dynamic orthodontic tooth movements. CBCT visualization during the initial placement of mini-implants in the most stable position has significantly reduced the risks of premature loss of stability. Constant advances in treatment methods in all medical specialties have led to the development and introduction of new drugs into therapy. Antithrombotic drugs are increasingly prescribed in the chronic treatment of numerous medical conditions. This is a large group of medications that act on components of the clotting process. We can categorize the vast majority of antithrombotic drugs used in chronic therapy into antiplatelet drugs - which are inhibiting platelet activity, or into anticoagulants - which are affecting various factors of the clotting cascade. In recent years, thanks to advances in the prevention and treatment of various cardiovascular diseases, in daily clinical practice we can see patients taking a combination therapy of two such drugs chronically. Even triple antithrombotic therapy is used in secondary prevention and in patients with high thromboembolic risk. The use of the above-mentioned medications prevents the formation of embolisms, but may pose a risk of an excessive bleeding that threatens the life or health of the patient. Hemorrhagic complications of chronically used anticoagulants are a problem of particular importance in patients preparing for maxillofacial surgery. Within this field, we can distinguish, according to the recommendations of the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis, procedures with a low or moderate risk of bleeding and those with a high risk of bleeding. For operations with a high risk of bleeding, careful preparation of the patient is necessary. The authors discuss the drugs most commonly used in antithrombotic therapy. They describe their types and their mode of action and pharmacological properties. In the following review paper, based on the current literature, recommendations relating to each of the above-mentioned groups of treatments are presented. The guidelines discussed in the paper will help safely prepare patients who chronically take antithrombotic drugs for various types of maxillofacial surgical procedures.

The current review aims to provide an overview of the most recent research in the last 10 years on the potentials of graphene in the dental surgery field, focusing on the potential of graphene oxide (GO) applied to implant surfaces and prosthetic abutment surfaces, as well as to the membranes and scaffolds used in Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) procedures. "Graphene oxide" and "dental surgery" and "dentistry" were the search terms utilized on the databases Scopus, Web of Science, and Pubmed, with the Boolean operator "AND" and "OR". Reviewers worked in pairs to select studies based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. They included animal studies, clinical studies, or case reports, and in vitro and in vivo studies. However, they excluded systematic reviews, narrative reviews, and meta-analyses. Results: Of these 293 studies, 19 publications were included in this review. The field of graphene-based engineered nanomaterials in dentistry is expanding. Aside from its superior mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and thermal stability, graphene and its derivatives may be functionalized with a variety of bioactive compounds, allowing them to be introduced into and improved upon various scaffolds used in regenerative dentistry. This review presents state-of-the-art graphene-based dental surgery applications. Even if further studies and investigations are still needed, the GO coating could improve clinical results in the examined dental surgery fields. Better osseointegration, as well as increased antibacterial and cytocompatible qualities, can benefit GO-coated implant surgery. On bacterially contaminated implant abutment surfaces, the CO coating may provide the optimum prospects for soft tissue sealing to occur. GBR proves to be a safe and stable material, improving both bone regeneration when using GO-enhanced graft materials as well as biocompatibility and mechanical properties of GO-incorporated membranes. Sedation is a technique that can be employed to assist selected patients to undergo dental procedures that may otherwise be difficult for them to tolerate in a fully conscious state. Safe sedation requires attention to patient selection, the clinical environment, level of physiological monitoring, sedation technique, and postoperative management. Various sedative pharmacological agents are available, and can be used alone or in combination. General anaesthetic agents used in lower doses for this purpose should be short-acting and carefully titrated, to allow fine control of sedation and a greater chance of success. Inadvertent overdosage is a potential risk, therefore, these particular agents must be administered by an anaesthetist. The origins of general anaesthesia for dentistry are inextricably linked to the dawn of anaesthesia as a specialty, and the availability of the very first inhalational anaesthetic agents. Its delivery, regulation and safety profile have evolved significantly since then, with its practice now conducted solely by trained anaesthetists in a hospital setting. Dental chair anaesthesia and nasal masks have largely been replaced by more modern techniques and equipment, nevertheless, the patients that necessitate these interventions present their own unique challenges. Restricted mostly to adult patients that lack capacity (special care dentistry) and paediatric patients, these two groups can be demanding both clinically and logistically, requiring specialist knowledge and experience in managing patients undergoing 'shared airway' surgery, navigating complex consent and safeguarding processes, and working in tandem with a varied multidisciplinary team. Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate and compare the effects of manual acupuncture (MA) and electroacupuncture (EA) on current perception thresholds (CPTs) using quantitative methods. Methods: Twenty-nine healthy volunteers participated in this prospective crossover trial, in which three acupuncture methods were compared: control, MA, and EA. Acupuncture needles were inserted to a depth of 15 mm at LI4 and LI11 on the left side and retained for 30 min with or without electrical stimulation at a frequency of 2 Hz (EA and MA, respectively). The needles were removed and participants rested for 30 min. CPT in the left mental region was measured at 2000, 250, and 5 Hz, corresponding to the activation of Aβ, Aδ, and C-fibers, respectively, at four time points: baseline, T0; 15 min after needle application, T1; immediately after needle removal, T2; and 30 min after needle removal, T3. In the control session, only a sensory test was performed (without acupuncture). Results: Significant effects of time course on CPT were observed (p < 0.001). CPT values increased significantly at T1, T2, and T3, compared with those at T0, at all stimulation frequencies during MA and EA. Changes in CPT values with EA were not significantly greater than those with MA. Conclusions: Both MA and EA increased the sensory thresholds of Aβ, Aδ, and C-fibers in the mental region for ⩾30 min after needle removal. Additional of electrical stimulation may not confer additional benefits over needling alone. Computer-guided dynamic navigation systems have elevated dental implant surgery into a more patient-friendly and efficient procedure. However, commercially available systems use displays as an output for guidance. This implies that surgeons have to take their eyes off the surgery site frequently in order to accurately adjust surgical instruments. The solution for such an issue is to use augmented reality (AR) head-mounted devices to showcase all necessary guiding instructions without any distractions. In this work, the implementation of augmented reality in dental surgery using the HoloLens 2 AR headset for the assessment of accuracy is described. The experiments were performed in vitro with two implementation steps, evaluating calibration and perspective of the virtual dental model alignment accuracies using a newly created marker. The calibration results showed overall accuracy and precision surpassing the 1 mm threshold in distance-related measurements. Dependency on the side on which the marker was observed and the movement of the user's head were considered to be the most influential factors regarding the perspective of the virtual dental model alignment accuracy estimate. Methods: cross-sectional study in which 68 students from the Universidad Científica del Sur who graduated in 2021 participated. A scale was used that collected the experiences on the development of a research that involved: thesis supervision, skills development, and intellectual climate, expectations, infrastructure and thesis evaluation. The variables were compared according to gender, academic performance and research experience of the students. Results: cross-sectional study in which 68 students from the Universidad Científica del Sur who graduated in 2021 participated. A scale was used that collected the experiences on the development of a research involving: thesis supervision, skills development, intellectual climate, expectations, infrastructure and evaluation of the thesis. The variables were compared according to gender, academic performance and research experience of the students. Conclusions: undergraduate students perceive satisfaction with the processes of writing an undergraduate thesis as "moderate", with a score below the average of what is expected. Introduction: The knowledge of the location of the Mandibular Foramen (MF) is important for effective local anaesthesia in dental surgeries and mandibular implants. The location of the foramen can vary in different populations, but very few studies have explored the differences between males and females. Aim: To estimate the morphometric parameters of the MF in male and female dry adult mandibles. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional cadaveric study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences, Dehradun (Uttarakhand) India, from October 2019 to December 2022. The location of MF in 75 dry adult male mandibles and 50 dry adult female mandibles was measured. All the anatomical parameters (MF to Anterior Border of mandibular ramus (MF-AB), MF to Posterior Border of mandibular ramus (MF-PB), MF to Mandibular Notch (MF-MN), MF to Angle of Mandible (MF-AG), MF to Inferior Border of mandibular ramus (MF-IB), MF to Mandibular Condyle (MF-MC), MF to apex of Retromolar Trigone (MF-RT), and AB of mandibular ramus to PB of mandibular ramus (AB-PB)) were measured using a sliding digital vernier caliper in both genders, based on the right and left mandibular foramina from different bony landmarks. Continuous data obtained was expressed as mean±Standard Deviation (SD). Analysis was done by applying an independent t-test via Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Advanced mathematical and deep learning (DL) algorithms have recently played a crucial role in diagnosing medical parameters and diseases. One of these areas that need to be more focused on is dentistry. This is why creating digital twins of dental issues in the metaverse is a practical and effective technique to benefit from the immersive characteristics of this technology and adapt the real world of dentistry to the virtual world. These technologies can create virtual facilities and environments for patients, physicians, and researchers to access a variety of medical services. Experiencing an immersive interaction between doctors and patients can be another considerable advantage of these technologies, which can dramatically improve the efficiency of the healthcare system. In addition, offering these amenities through a blockchain system enhances reliability, safety, openness, and the ability to trace data exchange. It also brings about cost savings through improved efficiencies. In this paper, a digital twin of cervical vertebral maturation (CVM), which is a critical factor in a wide range of dental surgery, within a blockchain-based metaverse platform is designed and implemented. A DL method has been used to create an automated diagnosis process for the upcoming CVM images in the proposed platform. This method includes MobileNetV2, a mobile architecture that improves the performance of mobile models in multiple tasks and benchmarks. The proposed technique of digital twinning is simple, fast, and suitable for physicians and medical specialists, as well as for adapting to the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) due to its low latency and computing costs. One of the important contributions of the current study is to use of DL-based computer vision as a real-time measurement method so that the proposed digital twin does not require additional sensors. Furthermore, a comprehensive conceptual framework for creating digital twins of CVM based on MobileNetV2 within a blockchain ecosystem has been designed and implemented, showing the applicability and suitability of the introduced approach. The high performance of the proposed model on a collected small dataset demonstrates that low-cost deep learning can be used for diagnosis, anomaly detection, better design, and many more applications of the upcoming digital representations. Abstract Objective Intranasal administration of dexmedetomidine for monitored anesthesia care (MAC) appears to be an effective, safe, and appropriate alternative to general anesthesia (GA) for ambulatory dental surgery. Based on the available evidence we evaluated a new MAC protocol with intranasal dexmedetomidine as the primary choice. To assess a difference in patient satisfaction and anesthesia-related discomfort between GA and MAC in ambulatory dental surgery, a study was conducted among patients undergoing various dental procedures. Patient satisfaction and anesthesia-related discomfort were assessed on the first postoperative day using the Bauer patient satisfaction questionnaire. In this paper, we investigate a motion-tracking system for robotic computer-assisted implant surgery. Failure of the accurate implant positioning may result in significant problems, thus an accurate real-time motion-tracking system is crucial for avoiding these issues in computer-assisted implant surgery. Essential features of the motion-tracking system are analyzed and classified into four categories: workspace, sampling rate, accuracy, and back-drivability. Based on this analysis, requirements for each category have been derived to ensure that the motion-tracking system meets the desired performance criteria. A novel 6-DOF motion-tracking system is proposed which demonstrates high accuracy and back-drivability, making it suitable for use in computer-assisted implant surgery. The results of the experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed system in achieving the essential features required for a motion-tracking system in robotic computer-assisted implant surgery. (1) Background: Different compositions of biodegradable materials are being investigated to successfully replace non-resorbable ones in bone tissue regeneration in dental surgery. The systematic review tried to address the question, "Can biodegradable polymers act as a replacement for conventional materials in dental surgery procedures?" (2) Methods: An electronic search of the PubMed and Scopus databases was conducted in October 2022. The following keywords were used: (lactide polymers) and (hydroxyapatite or fluorapatite) and (dentistry) and (regeneration). Initially, 59 studies were found. Forty-one studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. (3) Results: These usually improved the properties and induced osteogenesis, tissue mineralisation and bone regeneration by inducing osteoblast proliferation. Five studies showed higher induction of osteogenesis in the case of biomaterials, UV-HAp/PLLA, ALBO-OS, bioresorbable raw particulate hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide and PLGA/HAp, compared to conventional materials such as titanium. Four studies confirmed improvement in tissue mineralisation with the usage of biomaterials: hydroxyapatite/polylactic acid (HA/PLA) loaded with dog's dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), Coll/HAp/PLCL, PDLLA/VACNT-O:nHAp, incorporation of hydroxyapatite and simvastatin. Three studies showed an acceleration in proliferation of osteoblasts for the use of biomaterials with additional factors such as collagen and UV light. (4) Conclusions: Lactide polymers present higher osteointegration and cell proliferation rate than the materials compared. They are superior to non-biodegradable materials in terms of the biocompability, bone remodelling and healing time tests. Moreover, because there is no need of reoperation, as the material automatically degrades, the chance of scars and skin sclerosis is lower. The use of hormonal anti-inflammatory drugs is a common practice in oral and dental surgery. They have proven enhanced efficacy, increasing therapeutic success when the treatment is properly chosen and managed. However, given the complexity of neurophysiologic processes, little is known regarding the consequences of administering glucocorticoids on brain function. This article aims to bring to the attention of dental health professionals the main neurophysiologic mechanisms by which glucocorticoid hormones can affect memory and attention. In addition, in the context of increasing global prevalence and incidence of cannabinoid consumption, both for medical and recreational purposes, the issue of the association of cortisonederived drugs in the systemic context of these phytocannabinoids is addressed, in terms of memory issues and attention. To assess a difference in patient satisfaction and anesthesia-related discomfort between GA and MAC in ambulatory dental surgery, a study was conducted among patients undergoing various dental procedures. Patient satisfaction and anesthesia-related discomfort were assessed on the first postoperative day using the Bauer patient satisfaction questionnaire. Results: Although the differences were small, patients in the MAC group were overall more satisfied with the general care compared to the GA group (p < 0.02). Patients in the MAC group reported more postoperative drowsiness compared to the GA group (p < 0.05), but less postoperative hoarseness and sore throat (p = 0.005 and p < 0.001, respectively). Moreover, postoperative thirst was more common in the GA group (p = 0.002). In conclusion, the differences in patient satisfaction and anesthesia-related discomfort between GA and MAC in this implementation study were small but appeared to favor MAC with intranasal dexmedetomidine over GA as anesthesia method during dental ambulatory surgery. The presented work deals with the analysis and testing of surgical guidance systems in the dental field, which were created based on available software. When manufacturing dental guidance systems, it is important to consider factors such as the digitization process in the production process, design, selection of the most suitable material and method of implantation. Three types of surgical guidance systems were made by three different devices which work on the principle of additive technology and were closely analysed. Subsequently, the created surgical guidance systems were compared with Standard Triangle Language (STL) files in Gom Inspect software, to determine the accuracy of printed objects. In conclusion, it is important to note that the presented work is a pilot study, which is focused on the design of a methodology to produce surgical guides using 3D printing, taking into account shape accuracy. Objectives: In both elective surgeries and aviation, a reduction of complications can be expected by paying attention to the so-called human factors. Checklists are a well-known way to overcome some of these problems. We aimed to evaluate the current evidence regarding the use of checklists in implant dentistry. Methods: An electronic literature search was conducted in the following databases: CINHAL, Medline, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library until March 2022. Based on the results and additional literature, a preliminary checklist for surgical implant therapy was designed. Results: Three publications dealing with dental implants and checklists were identified. One dealt with the use of a checklist in implant dentistry and was described as a quality assessment study. The remaining two studies offered suggestions for checklists based on literature research and expert opinion. Conclusions: Based on our results, the evidence for the use of checklists in dental implantology is extremely low. Considering the great potential, it can be stated that there is a need to catch up. While creating a new implant checklist, we took care of meeting the criteria for high-quality checklists. Future controlled studies will help to place it on a broad foundation. Clinical relevance: Checklists are a well-known way to prevent complications. They are especially established in aviation, but many surgical specialties and anesthesia adopt this successful concept. Congenital granular cell tumor (CGCT) in newborns is a rare tumor occurring in the oral cavity, leading to difficulty in breast-feeding, mouth closure, and even respiration. This is rarely diagnosed perinatally and may be confused with a wide range of congenital, benign, or malignant growths during the clinical examination. The CGCT may be studied by ultrasonography to get a positive affirmation on the clinical diagnosis and, for basic pre-surgical guidance before excision. A histological study is needed to provide a final diagnosis and rule out any possible aggressive tumors. The report highlights the role of dental surgeons and clinical pathologists in providing prompt primary care for an unusual pediatric swelling under rural Indian settings.

The current review aims to provide an overview of the most recent research in the last 10 years on the potentials of graphene in the dental surgery field, focusing on the potential of graphene oxide (GO) applied to implant surfaces and prosthetic abutment surfaces, as well as to the membranes and scaffolds used in Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) procedures. “Graphene oxide” and “dental surgery” and “dentistry” were the search terms utilized on the databases Scopus, Web of Science, and Pubmed, with the Boolean operator “AND” and “OR”. Reviewers worked in pairs to select studies based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. They included animal studies, clinical studies, or case reports, and in vitro and in vivo studies. However, they excluded systematic reviews, narrative reviews, and meta-analyses. Results: Of these 293 studies, 19 publications were included in this review. The field of graphene-based engineered nanomaterials in dentistry is expanding. Aside from its superior mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and thermal stability, graphene and its derivatives may be functionalized with a variety of bioactive compounds, allowing them to be introduced into and improved upon various scaffolds used in regenerative dentistry. This review presents state-of-the-art graphene-based dental surgery applications. Even if further studies and investigations are still needed, the GO coating could improve clinical results in the examined dental surgery fields. Better osseointegration, as well as increased antibacterial and cytocompatible qualities, can benefit GO-coated implant surgery. On bacterially contaminated implant abutment surfaces, the CO coating may provide the optimum prospects for soft tissue sealing to occur. GBR proves to be a safe and stable material, improving both bone regeneration when using GO-enhanced graft materials as well as biocompatibility and mechanical properties of GO-incorporated membranes.

Computer-guided dynamic navigation systems have elevated dental implant surgery into a more patient-friendly and efficient procedure. However, commercially available systems use displays as an output for guidance. This implies that surgeons have to take their eyes off the surgery site frequently in order to accurately adjust surgical instruments. The solution for such an issue is to use augmented reality (AR) head-mounted devices to showcase all necessary guiding instructions without any distractions. In this work, the implementation of augmented reality in dental surgery using the HoloLens 2 AR headset for the assessment of accuracy is described. The experiments were performed in vitro with two implementation steps, evaluating calibration and perspective of the virtual dental model alignment accuracies using a newly created marker. The calibration results showed overall accuracy and precision surpassing the 1 mm threshold in distance-related measurements. Dependency on the side on which the marker was observed and the movement of the user’s head were considered to be the most influential factors regarding the perspective of the virtual dental model alignment accuracy estimate.

The aim of this review was to discuss the current and newly emerging antiresorptive medications and their potential implications for dental surgeries. The authors searched PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane, Embase, and other electronic databases for articles related to osteonecrosis of the jaw and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). In addition, the authors hand searched the bibliographies of all relevant articles, the gray literature, textbooks, and guidelines in association position statements. The following information for MRONJ risk should be evaluated before any invasive dental procedure: metastatic carcinoma has a higher risk than osteoporosis; parenterally administered bisphosphonates and denosumab have a higher risk than orally administered bisphosphonates or antiangiogenic agents; dose and duration of medication received; adjunctive medications or combination of antiresorptive agents also may increase the risk of MRONJ; additive factors and comorbidities such as diabetes, autoimmune disease, immunosuppression, or any condition that might affect healing negatively would result in potentially higher risk of developing MRONJ; angiogenic inhibitors as part of a cancer treatment regimen, with or without antiresorptive medication, are considered high risk. Patients who received antiresorptive therapy for malignancy were at higher risk of developing MRONJ than those who received the therapy for osteoporosis, regardless of the route of administration and type of drug. Antiangiogenic agents, bevacizumab, aflibercept, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as sunitinib were implicated most commonly in the development of MRONJ. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels in children with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) following rehabilitative surgery using general anesthesia (GA). Methods: Children with S-ECC were recruited on the day of surgery for a prospective study investigating changes in nutritional status and well-being before and after surgery. Venipunctures for 25(OH)D were performed while children were in the operating room, and parents completed a questionnaire regarding nutritional intake, oral health, quality of life, and family demographics. Participants returned at a minimum of three months for a follow-up venipuncture, questionnaire, and dental examination. Analyses included descriptive, bivariate, and multivariable regression analyses. A P-value of =0.05 was significant. Results: Overall, 150 children participated, with a mean age of 47.7±14.1 months. The mean baseline 25(OH)D concentration was 49.8±16.9 nmol/L, with 17 percent having deficient levels. Overall, 106 returned for follow-up. Paired t-tests revealed significant improvements in the mean 25(OH)D levels following rehabilitation (50.1±17.1 nmol/L versus 61.2±18.7, P<0.001). The proportion with optimal and adequate 25(OH)D levels increased from 9.2 percent to 24.1 percent and from 48.3 percent to 67.8 percent, respectively, while those classified as deficient decreased from 17.2 percent to 8.1 percent from baseline to follow-up. Conclusions: Significant improvements in vitamin D concentrations were observed following dental rehabilitation. Dry socket is one of the postoperative complications of tooth extraction. It is the partial or total loss of the post-extraction blood clot, resulting in severe pain that usually starts one to five days postoperatively, with clinical evidence of exposed alveolar bone, necrotic debris, halitosis, and tenderness on examination. The purpose of our systematic review was to answer the question "Is there a relationship between smoking and dry socket?". After meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria, eleven studies were included in this systematic review (according to the PRISMA statement guidelines). Based on a meta-analysis, tobacco smokers had a more than three-fold increase in the odds of dry socket after tooth extraction. Overall, the combined incidence of dry socket in smokers was found to be about 13.2% and in non-smokers about 3.8%. Despite the heterogeneity of the included studies (different types of teeth extracted, different age groups), cigarette smoking was related to an increased risk of dry socket after tooth extraction. The article provides an in-depth review focused on diagnosing oral surgery-related complications that may cause odontogenic sinusitis (ODS). It emphasizes the importance of evaluating patients with prior oral surgical procedures to determine whether the prior procedure is an ongoing infectious source of the ODS. Specifically, diagnostic evaluations will be described for detecting oroantral communications and fistulas, dental implant dislocation or protrusion, and whether implants and graft placed in maxillary sinuses are infected. The article explores the understudied pathophysiology of odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) development as a result of oral surgical complications such as oroantral communication (OAC) or fistula (OAF), maxillary sinus bone grafting, and dental implantation. A temporary OAC presents most often after dental extraction, especially with posterior maxillary teeth, though can happen with any oral surgical intervention. Maxillary sinus augmentation can also cause ODS, and while the pathophysiology is incompletely understood, it may be related to OAC/OAF formation or bone graft infection. The present article explores the benefits of combining periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) with Invisalign for optimal orthodontic treatment outcomes. PAOO is an interdisciplinary dental technique that minimizes complications and accelerates tooth movement while enhancing various orthodontic treatments. In conjunction with Invisalign, PAOO provides a discreet and comfortable solution for patients seeking to improve their smile. The study presents two challenging cases successfully treated using this combined approach, emphasizing the technique’s potential to reduce treatment times and improve orthodontic outcomes. The interdisciplinary approach of PAOO ensures long-term success and stability by preserving periodontal structures and addressing potential bony defects. By incorporating bone grafting materials, PAOO helps prevent common concerns in traditional orthodontic treatments, such as bony defects and gingival recession. Furthermore, the combination with Invisalign offers a more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable treatment experience, allowing patients to maintain their self-esteem and confidence throughout the treatment. Despite the potential advantages, dental professionals must manage patient expectations and address potential complications to ensure the best possible results. Overall, the integration of PAOO and Invisalign demonstrates a viable alternative for patients who do not want to proceed with orthognathic surgery, enhancing patient satisfaction and overall treatment outcomes.

Advanced mathematical and deep learning (DL) algorithms have recently played a crucial role in diagnosing medical parameters and diseases. One of these areas that need to be more focused on is dentistry. This is why creating digital twins of dental issues in the metaverse is a practical and effective technique to benefit from the immersive characteristics of this technology and adapt the real world of dentistry to the virtual world. These technologies can create virtual facilities and environments for patients, physicians, and researchers to access a variety of medical services. Experiencing an immersive interaction between doctors and patients can be another considerable advantage of these technologies, which can dramatically improve the efficiency of the healthcare system. In addition, offering these amenities through a blockchain system enhances reliability, safety, openness, and the ability to trace data exchange. It also brings about cost savings through improved efficiencies. In this paper, a digital twin of cervical vertebral maturation (CVM), which is a critical factor in a wide range of dental surgery, within a blockchain-based metaverse platform is designed and implemented. A DL method has been used to create an automated diagnosis process for the upcoming CVM images in the proposed platform. This method includes MobileNetV2, a mobile architecture that improves the performance of mobile models in multiple tasks and benchmarks. The proposed technique of digital twinning is simple, fast, and suitable for physicians and medical specialists, as well as for adapting to the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) due to its low latency and computing costs. One of the important contributions of the current study is to use of DL-based computer vision as a real-time measurement method so that the proposed digital twin does not require additional sensors. Furthermore, a comprehensive conceptual framework for creating digital twins of CVM based on MobileNetV2 within a blockchain ecosystem has been designed and implemented, showing the applicability and suitability of the introduced approach. The high performance of the proposed model on a collected small dataset demonstrates that low-cost deep learning can be used for diagnosis, anomaly detection, better design, and many more applications of the upcoming digital representations. In addition, this study shows how digital twins can be performed and developed for dental issues with the lowest hardware infrastructures, reducing the costs of diagnosis and treatment for patients.

Objective: Most dental chairs lack sufficient stability to perform effective manual chest compression (MCC) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A stabilizing stool can significantly reduce backrest vertical displacement in all chair types; however, a severely curved exterior backrest may negatively impact the stool's effectiveness. This study evaluated the efficacy of 2 stool positions for stabilizing a dental chair during MCC.Methods: Chest compressions were performed on a manikin positioned in a dental chair while vertical displacement of the chair backrest during MCC was recorded using video and measured. Vertical displacement data were captured with no stool and with a stabilizing stool in 2 different positions. Reduction ratios were calculated to evaluate the effectiveness of the 2 stool positions.Results: With no stool, the backrest median (interquartile range) vertical displacement during chest compressions was 16.5 (2.5) mm as compared with 12.0 (1.5) mm for the stabilizing stool positioned under the area of MCC and 8.5 (1.0) mm under the shoulders. The stool positioned under the shoulders produced a significantly increased calculated reduction ratio of 48% (14%) compared with 27% (20%) under the area of MCC (P < .001).Conclusions: Positioning a stabilizing stool under the shoulders was more effective at reducing vertical displacement of the dental chair backrest during chest compressions than positioning the stool under the area of MCC. In this paper, we investigate a motion-tracking system for robotic computer-assisted implant surgery. Failure of the accurate implant positioning may result in significant problems, thus an accurate real-time motion-tracking system is crucial for avoiding these issues in computer-assisted implant surgery. Essential features of the motion-tracking system are analyzed and classified into four categories: workspace, sampling rate, accuracy, and back-drivability. Based on this analysis, requirements for each category have been derived to ensure that the motion-tracking system meets the desired performance criteria. A novel 6-DOF motion-tracking system is proposed which demonstrates high accuracy and back-drivability, making it suitable for use in computer-assisted implant surgery. The results of the experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed system in achieving the essential features required for a motion-tracking system in robotic computer-assisted implant surgery.

(1) Background: Different compositions of biodegradable materials are being investigated to successfully replace non-resorbable ones in bone tissue regeneration in dental surgery. The systematic review tried to address the question, “Can biodegradable polymers act as a replacement for conventional materials in dental surgery procedures?” (2) Methods: An electronic search of the PubMed and Scopus databases was conducted in October 2022. The following keywords were used: (lactide polymers) and (hydroxyapatite or fluorapatite) and (dentistry) and (regeneration). Initially, 59 studies were found. Forty-one studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. (3) Results: These usually improved the properties and induced osteogenesis, tissue mineralisation and bone regeneration by inducing osteoblast proliferation. Five studies showed higher induction of osteogenesis in the case of biomaterials, UV-HAp/PLLA, ALBO-OS, bioresorbable raw particulate hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide and PLGA/Hap, compared to conventional materials such as titanium. Four studies confirmed improvement in tissue mineralisation with the usage of biomaterials: hydroxyapatite/polylactic acid (HA/PLA) loaded with dog’s dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), Coll/HAp/PLCL, PDLLA/VACNT-O:nHAp, incorporation of hydroxyapatite and simvastatin. Three studies showed an acceleration in proliferation of osteoblasts for the use of biomaterials with additional factors such as collagen and UV light. (4) Conclusions: Lactide polymers present higher osteointegration and cell proliferation rate than the materials compared. They are superior to non-biodegradable materials in terms of the biocompability, bone remodelling and healing time tests. Moreover, because there is no need of reoperation, as the material automatically degrades, the chance of scars and skin sclerosis is lower. However, more studies involving greater numbers of biomaterial types and mixes need to be performed in order to find a perfect biodegradable material.

Abstract: Appropriate monitoring of opioid use in patients with pain conditions is paramount, yet it remains a very challenging task. The current work examined the use of a wearable sensor to detect self-administration of opioids after dental surgery using machine learning. Participants were recruited from an oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic. Participants were 46 adult patients (26 female) receiving opioids after dental surgery. Participants wore Empatica E4 sensors during the period they self-administered opioids. The E4 collected physiological parameters including accelerometer x-, y-, and z-axes, heart rate, and electrodermal activity. Four machine learning models provided validation accuracies greater than 80%, but the bagged-tree model provided the highest combination of validation accuracy (83.7%) and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.92). The trained model had a validation sensitivity of 82%, a specificity of 85%, a positive predictive value of 85%, and a negative predictive value of 83%. A subsequent test of the trained model on withheld data had a sensitivity of 81%, a specificity of 88%, a positive predictive value of 87%, and a negative predictive value of 82%. Results from training and testing model of machine learning indicated that opioid self-administration could be identified with reasonable accuracy, leading to considerable possibilities of the use of wearable technology to advance prevention and treatment. Venous air embolism (VAE) occurs when air is introduced into the venous system and subsequently travels into the right heart and pulmonary circulation. VAE mainly occurs from air that is forced by positive pressure or drawn in by negative pressure. We present a rare case of fatal VAE that occurred during a routine dental root canal procedure. A 69-year-old male was undergoing a root canal procedure at an outpatient dental office under local anesthesia. During the procedure, he went into cardiopulmonary arrest. He was resuscitated, and return of spontaneous circulation was achieved. Thoracic computed tomography was performed and revealed large amounts of air within the right ventricle and portal venous system. Acquired hemophilia is a rare coagulation disorder that is not diagnosed by routine clinical laboratory tests. Thus, many perioperative or acute emergent bleeding complications remain unclear until the underlying cause is specified. We report two cases of postoperative bleeding in the context of dental surgery in which subsequent acquired hemophilia could be confirmed and present a short review from the literature. Purpose: To investigate improvement in iron and iron-related nutritional status of children with severe-early childhood caries (S-ECC) following dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia (GA). Methods: Children with S-ECC were recruited into a prospective study investigating changes in nutritional status before and after surgery. Parents completed a questionnaire, as their child had a venipuncture while under GA. Children returned for follow-up at a minimum of three months postsurgery, and parents completed a follow-up questionnaire and their child had an additional venipuncture and dental examination. Statistical analyses included descriptive, bivariate, and multivariable regression analyses. Results: A total of 150 children participated (mean age 47.7±14.1 months). The mean baseline ferritin concentration was 27.9±19.1 µg/L, while mean iron and hemoglobin levels were 12.3±4.3 µmol/L and 107.5±9.2 g/L, respectively. Overall, 53 percent were anemic, 30 percent had iron deficiency (ID), and 20 percent had iron deficiency anemia (IDA) at baseline. In total, 106 participants returned for follow-up. Paired t-tests revealed significant improvements in ferritin (27.0±18.4 µg/L versus 34.3±18.2 µg/L, P<0.001) and hemoglobin (108.2±8.3 g/L versus 123.7±9.4 g/L, P<0.001) levels. There was a 16 percent reduction in children with ID (P<0.001) and a 20 percent reduction in children experiencing IDA (P=0.011) from baseline to follow-up. Multivariable regression revealed that follow-up ferritin levels were associated with baseline ferritin concentrations, red meat intake, and difficulty purchasing food because of cost. Conclusions: Improvements in iron and iron-related nutritional status were observed post GA.
