Objetivos: Relacionar a densidade mineral óssea em idosos com a presença de fatores de risco nutricionais para osteoporose. Métodos: Em idosos, de ambos os sexos, com idade igual ou maior que sessenta anos, foi verificada a densidade mineral óssea por meio do exame densitométrico. Dados sociodemográficos e econômicos foram coletados em um questionário estruturado. A identificação dos fatores de risco nutricionais foi verificada a partir do Questionário de Frequência Alimentar e Miniavaliação Nutricional. O nível de significância adotado neste estudo foi de 5%. Resultados: A amostra foi constituída por 71 idosos, sendo 10 homens (14,1%) e 61 mulheres (85,9%). A idade média foi de 68,77 ± 6,73 anos. No modelo de regressão linear múltipla ajustado, o gênero (p = 0,009), o consumo de sódio (p = 0,011) e a vitamina B12 (p = 0,003) foram as variáveis que apresentaram maior correlação significativa com a densidade mineral óssea. Risco de desnutrição (p = 0,021) e histórico familiar para osteoporose (p = 0,020) também são fatores que interferiram negativamente na densidade mineral óssea. As variáveis tabagismo, sedentarismo, uso de álcool, ingestão de proteínas, fibras, cafeína, vitamina C e potássio não apresentaram impactos significativos nas variações de densidade mineral óssea para a amostra observada neste estudo. Conclusões: Alto consumo de sódio e baixa ingestão de vitamina B12 são os principais fatores de risco nutricionais para osteoporose que interferem na densidade mineral óssea em idosos. Histórico familiar, sexo feminino e estado nutricional (risco de desnutrição) também colaboraram para a redução da massa óssea.

OBJETIVO: Realizar uma revisão sistemática a respeito da exposição corporal ao treinamento vibratório e os efeitos causados no tecido ósseo de mulheres pós-menopáusicas. MÉTODOS: A busca pelo material se deu por meio de pesquisas realizadas na base de dados: CAPES, LILACS, MEDLINE, PubMed e SciELO, em todos os idiomas, de 2000 a 2015. Os descritores utilizados, em associação, foram: whole body vibration, osteoporosis e vibrating platform. Todos os trabalhos tiveram sua qualidade metodológica avaliada pela escala PEDro e somente artigos com escore acima de 70% foram revisados. A análise consistiu em 532 artigos, porém foram elegíveis apenas 11. RESULTADOS: Os estudos analisados demonstram resultados divergentes dos efeitos da vibração no tecido ósseo de mulheres pós-menopáusicas. Entretanto, observa-se que os resultados osteogênicos mais positivos são decorrentes da exposição a baixas e médias frequências, com período de repouso entre as séries e os dias de treinamento. CONCLUSÃO: Não há evidências científicas que comprovem o benefício da vibração corporal no aumento de massa óssea em mulheres pós-menopáusicas.

Introdução: A tríade da mulher atleta (TMA) é um espectro de distúrbios que envolve baixa disponibilidade energética (BDE), baixa densidade mineral óssea e distúrbios menstruais. A BDE, um dos três principais componentes da TMA, sendo um dos principais efeitos adversos da “deficiência energética relativa no esporte” (DER-E) sobre a saúde. Objetivo: Apresentar considerações a respeito de métodos consistentes, novas propostas e recomendações para o gerenciamento da TMA. Conclusão: A TMA e a /DER-E afetam um número cada vez maior de mulheres atletas e requerem um tratamento terapêutico adequado, particularmente, destacada atenção nos cuidados nutricionais. Portanto, é fundamental a cooperação de uma equipe multidisciplinar composta por médico, nutricionista, fisioterapeuta e psicólogo no acompanhamento das atletas.

Objective: To investigate the impact of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate on bone mineral density and bone mineral content in children and adolescents infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Data source: The search procedure was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Statement. The search was carried out until April 2022 in Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline), Embase, Cochrane Central, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Web of Science, Scopus, and MedRxiv. The combination of terms used was: (Children OR Youth OR Teenagers) AND HIV AND (Tenofovir OR “Antiretroviral therapy”) AND (“Bone density” OR Osteoporosis OR Osteopenia). The protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO, CRD42022312851) Data synthesis: The initial searches resulted in 1156 papers. After the exclusion of duplicate studies, three blinded reviewers analyzed the title and abstract of 563 papers, of which 57 remained to be read in full. Only nine papers met the eligibility criteria and were included in descriptive and risk-of-bias analyses. Regarding study design, four were cross-sectional, three were longitudinal before-after studies without a control group, and two were prospective cohorts. Among these nine papers, seven showed no significant association between tenofovir disoproxil fumarate use and reduced bone mass in young people. However, these papers did not have high methodological quality. Conclusions: Although most of the selected papers found no harmful effect of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate on bone mass, further primary research with higher methodological quality is needed so robust scientific evidences can be obtained. Objective: This study aimed to verify the association between childhood anthropometric indicators and areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in adulthood. Methods: Repeated measures of 137 subjects (68 females) were obtained in childhood (9.2±1.5 years of age) and adulthood (22.3±1.7 years of age). aBMD (g/cm²) was assessed for whole body, lumbar spine, upper and lower limbs, and femoral neck in adulthood using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Anthropometric measurements of body weight (BW), height, triceps and subscapular skinfolds were obtained in childhood. The anthropometric indicators used were BW, body mass index (BMI), and sum of skinfolds (∑SF). Simple linear regression was used to assess the association between childhood anthropometric indicators and aBMD in adulthood, controlled by chronological age and stratified by sex, with 5% statistical significance. Results: In females, multiple associations were observed between anthropometric indicators and aBMD, with higher coefficients for BMI (β=0.020; R²=0.20; p<0.01 for right femoral neck to β=0.008; R²=0.16; p<0.01 for upper limbs), followed by BW (β=0.003; R² =0.21; p<0.01 for upper limbs to β=0.008; R² =0.20; p<0.01 for right femoral neck) and ∑SF (β=0.001; R²=0.06; p<0.01 for upper limbs to β=0.005; R²=0.12; p<0.01 for right femoral neck). In males, associations were observed only for the lumbar spine region (β=0.016; R² =0.09 for BMI to β=0.004; R² =0.06; p<0.01 for ∑SF). Conclusions: Anthropometric indicators of childhood proved to be sensitive predictors of aBMD in adulthood, especially in females. BMI indicated a greater association with aBMD in both sexes. Resumo: Este estudo avaliou a associação do peso ao nascer, idade gestacional e crescimento intrauterino com a densidade mineral óssea (DMO) aos 22 e 30 anos, nas coortes de nascimentos de 1982 e 1993 de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. A DMO foi medida por absorciometria por raios X com dupla energia (DXA), a associação foi avaliada usando análise de variância e a regressão linear múltipla para o controle de confundimento por: sexo, renda familiar ao nascer, tabagismo materno na gestação, escolaridade materna, cor da pele materna e índice de massa corporal pré-gestacional. Foi testado se a gordura corporal na vida adulta era mediadora da associação analisada, por meio da G-computation Formula. Foram avaliados 6.803 participantes das coortes de 1982 e 1993, aos 30 e 22 anos, respectivamente. O peso ao nascer teve associação com a DMO em todos os sítios, com maior diferença no colo femoral. Os nascidos com menos de 2.000g apresentaram, em média, -0,036g/cm2 (IC95%: -0,064; -0,008) de DMO no colo femoral em comparação àqueles com mais de 3.500g. Aqueles com escore-z de crescimento intrauterino com pelo menos 1,28 desvio padrão abaixo da média apresentaram, em média, -0,013g/cm2 (IC95%: -0,024; -0,002) de DMO na coluna lombar, em relação aos com escore-z acima da média. A análise de mediação mostrou que gordura corporal na idade adulta não mediou a associação. As condições de nascimento foram associadas com a densidade mineral óssea na vida adulta, e a identificação dos fatores precoces relacionados à perda de DMO é essencial devido à inversão demográfica em progresso em países de média e baixa renda.

Objetivo: Este estudo objetivou investigar relações entre estilo de vida e tabagismo na densidade mineral óssea disponíveis na literatura. Método: Trata-se de revisão integrativa realizada entre março e outubro de 2017, nas bases de dados SciELO, Web of Science, Scopus e PubMed®. Foram incluídos artigos publicados de 2005 a 2016, com texto completo, em português ou inglês. Resultados: Vinte estudos atenderam aos critérios de inclusão. Em relação ao estilo de vida, foram avaliados atividade física (85%), uso de álcool (75%), consumo de cálcio (45%) e dieta (35%). A avaliação óssea deu-se prevalentemente pela coluna vertebral (55%); 75% apresentaram amostra superior a 250 pessoas, 40% avaliaram apenas mulheres e 60% avaliaram fumantes e não fumantes. Conclusão: Apesar de inconclusivos nas relações de efeito, mediação e confusão, o estilo de vida e a saúde óssea parecem estar associados de forma direta, e sugere-se existir relação inversa entre tabagismo e densidade mineral óssea segundo estudos disponíveis.

Objective: To verify the effect of recreational soccer on bone mineral density and sarcopenia in the elderly. Methods: Fourteen elderly people aged 65.9 ± 3.4 years were selected. They were separated into two groups: the intervention group and the control group; the intervention group played recreational soccer for 12 weeks on two days of the week. Assessments were performed for bone mineral density and body muscle mass before and after the intervention. For statistical analysis, the repeated measures ANOVA with Bonferroni’s post hoc test was used. Results: After 12 weeks, there was a significant change in bone mineral density in the region of the total femur (p = 0.020). Analyzing the participants’ sarcopenia, no significant results were found after the intervention period. Conclusion: Playing recreational soccer causes a significant improvement in the total femur and maintains bone regions in the spine, whole body, and femoral neck. Also, it promotes a removal from the threshold for sarcopenia screening in the elderly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bariatric surgery (BS) causes an exacerbated loss of body weight and fat, and can promote changes in other body tissues such as bone tissue. The aim of this study was to compare the profile of serum and urinary bone markers and bone mineral density (BMD) of active and sedentary patients after BS. The sample consisted of 89 patients, of both sexes, who underwent BS through the gastric bypass in Roux-Y, between years 2003 and 2013. Anthropometry, body composition, spine and femur BMD was evaluated by dual energy x-ray absormetry (DEXA), as well as biochemical variables through serum collected for the dosage of calcium, osteocalcin and PTH levels, and also 24-hours urine for deoxypyridinoline and calcium. The level of leisure-time physical activity was assessed by questionnaire. Statistical significance was set at 5%. The average age of active and sedentary groups was [51.76 (9.66)] and [47.06 (12.16)] and body mass index [34.98 (6.90)] and [29,26 (5.92)], respectively. There are statistically significant differences in osteocalcin levels between groups (p = 0.021), as well as small effect size observed in the following variables: BMD of the total femur, osteocalcin, deoxypyridinoline and serum calcium (respectively d = 0:36; d = 0:39; d = 00:41 d = 0.3). The incorporation of an active lifestyle demonstrated a positive impact on circulating levels of osteocalcin and other bone parameters, thereby indicating a possible preservation of BMD during the aging process.

Objective: To determine the association among bone mineral content, sociodemographic, anthropometric and behavioral factors, and health status of Brazilian adults. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, population-based study including 701 individuals from both sexes aged between 20 and 59 years. DEXA was used to evaluate dependent variable. The associations were evaluated using linear regression models stratified by sex. Results: When mean bone mineral content values were compared, we found significant differences related to sex and all the independent variables evaluated. In the adjusted models, we identified an inverse association between bone mineral content and age in both sexes. Among men, to be overweight and/or obese, be highly educated, and have almost sufficiency of 25(OH)D were associated with higher bone mineral content values. On the other hand, among women, to be non-white skin color, overweight and/or obese were associated with better bone health. The main factors associated with low total bone mineral density were advanced age, white skin color, low level of formal education, eutrophy, and 25(OH) D deficiency. Conclusion: Our results may help to identify adults who are at higher risk, and these findings should be used as guidelines for prevention and early diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introdução: Redução da densidade mineral óssea (DMO) está associada à Fenilcetonúria (PKU), mas a causa desta associação não é completamente entendida. Objetivo: Avaliar a ingestão de nutrientes relacionados ao metabolismo ósseo (cálcio, fósforo, magnésio, potássio), e sua associação com a DMO em pacientes com PKU. Métodos: Estudo transversal, observacional. Foram incluídos 15 pacientes (PKU Clássica=8; Leve=7; mediana de idade=16 anos, IQ=15-20), todos em tratamento com dieta restrita em fenilalanina (Phe) e 13 em uso de fórmula metabólica. Foi realizado recordatório alimentar de 24 horas de um dia e demais dados (histórico de fraturas, parâmetros antropométricos, DMO e níveis plasmáticos de Phe, Tyr, cálcio) foram obtidos por revisão de prontuário. Resultados: Nenhum paciente apresentou histórico de fraturas e seis realizavam suplementação de cálcio (alteração prévia da DMO=5; baixa ingestão=1). A mediana dos níveis de Phe foi 11,6 mg/dL (IQ=9,3-13,3). Em relação ao recordatório alimentar, dez indivíduos apresentaram inadequado consumo de carboidratos; 14, de lipídeos; 9, de cálcio; 11, de magnésio; 13, de fósforo; e todos de potássio. A mediana da DMO foi de 0,989 g/cm2 (IQ=0,903-1,069), sendo duas classificadas como reduzidas para idade, ambas de pacientes com PKU Leve que recebiam suplementação de cálcio. Não foi observada correlação entre níveis de Phe, DMO e demais variáveis analisadas. Conclusão: Redução da DMO não foi frequente na amostra, embora ingestão inadequada de cálcio assim o seja. Estudos adicionais são necessários para esclarecer o efeito da Phe e da ingestão dietética sobre o metabolismo ósseo na PKU. ABSTRACT Objective: Bone disease is a common comorbidity in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). We sought to determine risk factors and identify potential biochemical markers for CF-related bone disease (CFBD) in a unique cohort of CF patients with end-stage lung disease undergoing lung transplantation (LTx) evaluation. Methods: All of the CF patients who were evaluated for LTx at our center between November of 1992 and December of 2010 were included in the study. Clinical data and biochemical markers of bone turnover, as well as bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, were evaluated. Spearman’s rho and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used. Results: A total of 102 adult CF patients were evaluated. The mean age was 28.1 years (95% CI: 26.7-29.5), and the mean body mass index was 17.5 kg/m2 (95% CI: 17.2-18.2). Mean T-scores were −2.3 and −1.9 at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, respectively, being lower in males than in females (−2.7 vs. −2.0 at the lumbar spine and −2.2 vs. −1.7 at the femoral neck). Overall, 52% had a T-score of < −2.5 at either skeletal site. The homozygous Phe508del genotype was found in 57% of patients without osteoporosis and in 60% of those with low BMD. Mean T-scores were not particularly low in patients with severe CFTR mutations. Although the BMI correlated with T-scores at the femoral neck and lumbar spine, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone levels did not. Conclusions: CFBD is common in CF patients with end-stage lung disease, particularly in males and patients with a low BMI. It appears that CF mutation status does not correlate with CFBD. In addition, it appears that low BMD does not correlate with other risk factors or biochemical parameters. The prevalence of CFBD appears to have recently decreased, most likely reflecting increased efforts at earlier diagnosis and treatment.

Vitamin D (VD) is important for the development and maintenance of bone tissue. This study used clinical and radiographic evaluations to analyze whether insufficient VD levels affect the periimplant health of patients with implant-supported prostheses. Data were collected for 33 patients with implant-supported prostheses: probing depth (PD); width of keratinized mucosa (wKM); bleeding index (mBI); periimplant plaque index (mPI); distance from implant to bone crest and VD level using chemiluminescence. After 1 year of implant-supported prosthesis installation, patients with levels under 30 ng/ml at baseline received 50000 IU of VD per week for 8 weeks (post treatment, PT), when clinical and radiographic evaluations were repeated for the control (n=19) and the VD (n=14) groups. Clinical and radiographic results were compared at baseline and at PT. There were differences in PD (p=0.0247) and distance from implant to bone crest (p<0.0001), but there were not statistically different after supplementation. wMK, mBI and mPI were not statistically different between groups. VD levels were 24.95 ± 0.96 ng/mL in the VD group (42.42% of patients), whereas 57.57% of all participants had a mean VD value of 40.99 ± 1.23 ng/mL, a statistically significant difference (p = 0.0034). O objetivo do estudo foi comparar a DMO entre idosas fisicamente independentes com diferentes perfis físico-funcionais e polimorfismos do gene do receptor da vitamina D (VDR), assim como analisar a interação entre estes dois últimos aspectos sobre a DMO. Participaram do estudo 165 idosas, as quais tiveram a DMO avaliada por meio da densitometria óssea. Foram avaliadas também a força de preensão manual (FPM), força de membros inferiores (FMI) e a capacidade funcional de exercício (TC6min). Os polimorfismos do gene VDR (TaqI, BsmI, ApaI e FokI) foram analisados pela reação em cadeia da polimerase. Para as análises, as idosas foram categorizadas de acordo com seu desempenho físico-funcional em baixo desempenho (BD; percentil 75). Para a capacidade funcional de exercício, o grupo BD apresentou menor DMO em comparação ao grupo AD e DN (p=0,003). Em relação à FPM, o grupo BD apresentou uma tendência a menor DMO quando comparado ao grupo DN (p=0,08). Não foram observadas diferenças na DMO do fêmur e da lombar na comparação entre os genótipos do gene VDR (0,07≤p≤0,94); entre os grupos em relação à FMI (p=0,24) e na análise de interação entre as variáveis (0,17≤p≤0,77). Pode-se concluir que as idosas fisicamente independentes com baixa capacidade funcional de exercício apresentam menor DMO que aquelas com desempenho normal e alto desempenho. No entanto, aparentemente não existe interação entre os polimorfismos do gene VDR e o desempenho físico-funcional sobre a DMO.

The experiment was carried outto determine the levels of vitamin K for meat quails (Coturnixcoturnixsp) from 1 to 14 days of age. Atotal of 2200 birds were used, complete by random experimental design, with 8 treatments, 5 repetitions and 55 meat quails per experimental unit. The levels of vitamin K supplementation were 0; 0.7; 1.0; 1.3; 1.6; 1.9; 2.2; 2.5 mg/kg diets. The performance was measured through weighing weekly from the birds and feed, and at the end of the experiment was carried out collects blood and bones for the assessment of bone quality parameters. The levels of vitamin K supplementation had no influence on performance orbone quality, except thatthe bone density and calcium concentration of the femur and the bone density of the tibia showeda quadratic effect, with estimates of 0.98; 0.92 and 1.18 respectively. The length of the tibia showed a linear increase according to the levels of vitamin K. There was no effect in the concentration of serum calcium, but there was a quadratic effect in the concentration of alkaline phosphatase. The vitamin K supplementation did not affect the performance of the meat quails from 1 to 14 days of age, showing that the amount of vitamin K present in ground corn and soybean meal-based diets is sufficient to meet the needs of the birds’ performance.

Objective: To identify the prevalence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who conducted their examinations of Bone Mineral Densitometry in private clinic in the city of Maringá (PR) in the years of 2012 and 2013 and their association with risk factors. Methods: This transversal, descriptive exploratory study involving 177 postmenopausal women. The study included patients who presented primary osteoporosis, with or without hysterectomy and excluded volunteers who presented other conditions or diseases associated with altered bone mass. The main analyzed variables were: race; Body Mass Index; ages of menarche and menopause and menopause time. Results: The average age of the sample was 59 years old with a standard deviation of ±7.97 years. In relation to the classification of the patients according to the results of the examination of bone mass, 23% were in the normal group, 65% presented osteopenia and 12%, osteoporosis. Statistical analysis showed association of advanced age and time of menopause with the disease, but there was no statistical significance in relation to the analysis for association of other risk factors. Conclusions: The study conducted allows to conclude that there was a low prevalence of normal densitometry and high prevalence of low bone mass in the sampling population. The age and menopausal time period can be considered as risk factors for osteoporosis in the sample.

Objetivos:avaliar o efeito da amamentação na massa óssea de mulheres na pós-menopausa.Métodos:trata-se de revisão sistemática de estudos observacionais. A pesquisa da literatura foi realizada nas bases de dados bibliográficos Lilacs, Medline e Scopus, em junho de 2015, sem restrição quanto ao ano de publicação. Para ser incluído nesta revisão, o artigo deveria avaliar o histórico de amamentação e a massa óssea na pós-menopausa, sendo suas referências checadas para busca de novos estudos. Dois revisores, de forma independente, realizaram a extração de dados e a avaliação da suscetibilidade a vieses dos estudos.Resultados:foram selecionados 34 estudos, dos quais seis (26,5%) mostraram que a prática de amamentação aumentou significativamente a massa óssea e 15 (44%) encontraram o inverso. Constatou-se grande diversidade entre os estudos quanto à população de estudo, mensuração da exposição e sítios de avaliação da massa óssea, dificultando a comparabilidade entre os resultados.Conclusões:a marcante heterogeneidade dos estudos torna inconclusiva a direção da associação entre a amamentação e a massa óssea em mulheres na pós-menopausa, sendo necessários estudos com maior rigor metodológico para avaliar esse problema de grande relevância para as áreas clínica e de saúde pública.

Este estudo buscou analisar a associação entre testes de capacidade funcional, desempenho dos músculos do joelho e composição corporal de idosas com baixa densidade óssea. Foi desenvolvido um estudo transversal com 48 idosas (70,62±5,95 anos). Avaliou-se a capacidade funcional (testes Timed Up and Go - TUG e levantar e sentar na cadeira - TLS), desempenho muscular de joelho (dinamômetro isocinético), massa muscular (índice muscular esquelético com BIA) e massa magra (dobras cutâneas). A maioria da amostra era ativa ou moderadamente ativa (95,8%), apresentou sobrepeso (68,75%), ausência de sarcopenia (62,5%) e desempenho médio de 7,7 segundos no TUG e de 11,21 segundos no TLS. Observaram-se correlações negativas moderadas e baixas da capacidade funcional com as variáveis de desempenho muscular de joelho. A massa muscular apresentou correlação positiva baixa com potência de extensores de joelho e não apresentou correlação com a capacidade funcional, a qual apresentou associação somente com o desempenho muscular, reforçando a fragilidade do uso da massa muscular como medida única na identificação de sarcopenia.

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiological studies have shown a relationship between long-term use of proton pump inhibitors and bone metabolism. However, this relationship has not yet become established. The aim of the present study was to analyze the mechanical properties and bone mineral density (BMD) of rats that were subjected to long-term omeprazole use.METHODS: Fifty Wistar rats weighing between 200 and 240 g were divided equally into five groups: OMP300 (omeprazole intake at a dose of 300 µmoL/kg/day); OMP200 (200 µmoL/kg/day); OMP40 (40 µmoL/kg/day); OMP10 (10 µmoL/kg/day); and Cont (control group; intake of dilution vehicle). The solutions were administered for 90 consecutive days. After the rats had been sacrificed, their BMD, the mechanical properties of the dissected femurs and their serum Ca++ levels were analyzed.RESULTS: The BMD of the OMP300 group was lower than that of the controls (p = 0.006). There was no difference on comparing the OMP200, OMP40 and OMP10 groups with the controls. The maximum strength and rigidity of the femur did not differ in the experimental groups in comparison with the controls. The OMP300 group had a statistically lower serum Ca++ concentration than that of the controls (p = 0.049), but the other groups did not show any difference in relation to the controls.CONCLUSION: Daily intake of 300 µmoL/kg/day of omeprazole decreased the BMD of the femur, but without changes to the rigidity and strength of the femur in adult rats.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the results from arthroscopic suturing of large and extensive rotator cuff injuries, according to the patient's degree of osteopenia.METHOD: 138 patients who underwent arthroscopic suturing of large and extensive rotator cuff injuries between 2003 and 2011 were analyzed. Those operated from October 2008 onwards formed a prospective cohort, while the remainder formed a retrospective cohort. Also from October 2008 onwards, bone densitometry evaluation was requested at the time of the surgical treatment. For the patients operated before this date, densitometry examinations performed up to two years before or after the surgical treatment were investigated. The patients were divided into three groups. Those with osteoporosis formed group 1 (n = 16); those with osteopenia, group 2 (n = 33); and normal individuals, group 3 (n = 55).RESULTS: In analyzing the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) scores of group 3 and comparing them with group 2, no statistically significant difference was seen (p = 0.070). Analysis on group 3 in comparison with group 1 showed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.027).CONCLUSION: The results from arthroscopic suturing of large and extensive rotator cuff injuries seem to be influenced by the patient's bone mineral density, as assessed using bone densitometry.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by progressive destruction of nephron individual for prolonged periods of time. This study aims to determine the effect of 12 weeks of aerobic exercise on bone mineral density in chronic renal failure patients on hemodialysis. This study enrolled individuals adult volunteers with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis for at least three months, regardless of gender or age. Aerobic exercise was performed in the first two hours of hemodialysis session three times a week with a portable ergometer cycle with 12 weeks. To evaluate bone mineral density it was carried out the method of x-ray absorptiometry dual energy technique, known as DEXA. The paired t-test was applied to compare pre and post exercise T-score. The sample included three women (50%) and three men (50%) with a mean age of 54.83±16,87 years. The comparison between pre and post exercise in this study showed increased T-score in four individuals, and in 1 subject did not change and in another there was a decrease, with improved overall average trend. This study found that there was a trend for improvement in BMD in chronic renal failure patients on hemodialysis with 12 weeks of aerobic exercise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To perform a systematic review on the practice of physical activity and/or sports in health and its influence on bone geometry of healthy children and adolescents. Data source: The method used as reference was the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Databases searched for articles published from 2006 to 2016, with "Bone geometry" AND (Sport* OR Exercise* OR "Physical Activity") as descriptors, were PubMed, BIREME/LILACS and SciELO. Data syntheses: After the selection, 21 articles were included. Most studies stated that practice of physical activity and/or sports was beneficial for bone geometry and bone mineral density. Only two studies presented values of bone parameters for control individuals better than those of swimmers. Physical activities and sports studied were: gymnastics (n=7), rhythmic gymnastics (n=2), tennis (n=1), soccer (n=3), capoeira (n=1), swimming (n=4), cycling (n=0), jumping activities (n=2), studies relating physical activity with isokinetic peak torque (n=1), physical activity measured by questionnaire (n=4), and additional physical education classes (n=2). Conclusions: Among the sports and physical activities found, gymnastics, soccer, and more intense physical activity assessed by questionnaires were mentioned along with better results in bone geometry compared to the absence of physical activity, whereas swimming and jumping exercises did not influence it. Therefore, sports activities with weight bearing and those practiced more frequently and intensively are beneficial for bone geometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immobilization decrease in the bone mineral density (BMD) of body segment that is immobilized, and aquatic therapy has often been considered as a possible treatment. The aim off the present study was to compare spine BMD of rats that underwent immobilization and subsequently followed aquatic therapy. 32 female Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: control, immobilized, immobilized + aquatic therapy and aquatic therapy. Immobilization was performed in the rear right limb, comprising pelvis, hip, leg, knee and ankle and lasted 2 weeks. Aquatic therapy lasted 3 weeks, 6 days per week. After the experiment the rats were sacrificed and vertebrae L6 and T13 were removed and analyzed for BMD. There was a decrease in BMD of T13 in the immobilized group when compared with control and an increase in immobilized + aquatic therapy group when compared with immobilized group. It is concluded that aquatic therapy has the potential to override bone loss induced by limb immobilization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
