1. The Effects of Compton Camera Data Acquisition and Readout Timing on PG Imaging for Proton Range Verification

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine how the characteristics of the data acquisition (DAQ) electronics of a Compton camera (CC) affect the quality of the recorded prompt gamma (PG) interaction data and the reconstructed images, during clinical proton beam delivery. We used the Monte-Carlo-plus-Detector-Effect (MCDE) model to simulate the delivery of a 150 MeV clinical proton pencil beam to a tissue-equivalent plastic phantom. With the MCDE model we analyzed how the recorded PG interaction data changed as two characteristics of the DAQ electronics of a CC were changed: (1) the number of data readout channels; and (2) the active charge collection, readout, and reset time. As the proton beam dose rate increased, the number of recorded PG single-, double-, and triple-scatter events decreased by a factor of 60× for the current DAQ configuration of the CC. Abstract: Purpose To verify whether Icon automatic correction is robust in preserving plan quality. Materials/methods An end-to-end phantom was used to verify Icon’s correction accuracy qualitatively. For quantitative assessment, two plans, a composite- and a uniform-shot-only, were created for an elliptical- (E) and a sausage-shaped (S) lesion inside a PseudoPatient head phantom with a film insert. The phantom was irradiated in the planned and three other positions under each plan: 14° pitch (B); 14° rotation + 8° pitch (C); 95° rotation + 4-cm shift (D). Results Icon accurately corrects the locations of the shots. For the uniform-shot plans: all gamma index passing rates were >97%, and the differences between the planned and the delivery doses (minimum, maximum, and mean) were all ≤0.1 Gy. For the composite-shot plans, however, the dose differences increased as the phantom was shifted through positions B-D, with a gamma index passing rate of 61% for lesion-E in position D, and 92%, 79%, and 45% for lesion-S in positions B, C, and D, respectively. Conclusions Plans using only uniform shots are more robust to deviations in treatment position. The tolerance for such deviations may be lower for plans using composite shots.

Abstract: We present Compton camera (CC) based PG imaging for proton range verification at clinical dose rates. PG emission from a tissue-equivalent phantom during irradiation with clinical proton beams was measured with a prototype CC. Images were reconstructed of the raw measured data and of data processed with a neural network (NN) trained to identify “true” and “false” PG events. From these images, we determine if PG images produced by the prototype CC could provide clinically useful information about the in vivo range of the proton beams delivered during proton beam radiotherapy. NN processing of the data was found necessary to allow identification of the proton beam path from the PG images. Furthermore, to allow the localization of the end of the proton beam range with a precision of ≤ 3mm with the prototype CC, ~1 x 109 protons would need to be delivered, which is on the order of magnitude delivered for a standard proton radiotherapy treatment field. To obtain higher precision in beam range determination and to allow imaging a single proton pencil beam delivered within the full treatment field, further improvements in PG detection rates by the CC, NN data processing, and image reconstruction algorithms are needed.

Abstract: Radiomics is one such “big data” approach that applies advanced image refining/data characterization algorithms to generate imaging features that can quantitatively classify tumor phenotypes in a non-invasive manner. We hypothesize that certain textural features of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) primary tumors will have statistically significant correlations to patient outcomes such as local control. Patients from an IRB-approved database dispositioned to (chemo)radiotherapy for locally advanced OPC were included in this retrospective series. Pretreatment contrast CT scans were extracted and radiomics-based analysis of gross tumor volume of the primary disease (GTVp) were performed using imaging biomarker explorer (IBEX) software that runs in Matlab platform. Data set was randomly divided into a training dataset and test and tuning holdback dataset. Machine learning methods were applied to yield a radiomic signature consisting of features with minimal overlap and maximum prognostic significance. The radiomic signature was adapted to discriminate patients, in concordance with other key clinical prognosticators. 465 patients were available for analysis. A signature composed of 2 radiomic features from pre-therapy imaging was derived, based on the Intensity Direct and Neighbor Intensity Difference methods. Analysis of resultant groupings showed robust discrimination of recurrence probability and Kaplan-Meier-estimated local control rate (LCR) differences between “favorable” and “unfavorable” clusters were noted.

Abstract: A Compton imaging method for medical applications that includes new energy determination and data filtering techniques has been tested using several point sources with known emission lines. Using a prototype Compton camera, a distance-of-closest approach technique has been employed to determine the initial energy of the incoming γs and to ensure the reconstructed source position is within an acceptable distance from the known γ source location. Further analysis is done by implementing a Compton line filtering technique, keeping only those interactions whose deposited energy in the first interaction matches the theoretical energy deposition predicted by the Compton equation. Using this new event filtering method, we see improvements in the full width at half maximum in the lateral profiles of γ point sources of up to 70% over standard Compton imaging methods, as well as achievable spatial resolutions in the reconstructed images of better than 2 mm. In addition, this new Compton imaging method was able to reconstruct an extended source of γ rays emitted during irradiation of a water tank with a clinical proton radiotherapy beam.

Abstract: Radiomics is the use of quantitative imaging features extracted from medical images to characterize tumor pathology or heterogeneity. Features measured at pretreatment have successfully predicted patient outcomes in numerous cancer sites. This project was designed to determine whether radiomics features measured from non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) change during therapy and whether those features (delta-radiomics features) can improve prognostic models. Features were calculated from pretreatment and weekly intra-treatment computed tomography images for 107 patients with stage III NSCLC. Pretreatment images were used to determine feature-specific image preprocessing. Linear mixed-effects models were used to identify features that changed significantly with dose-fraction. Multivariate models were built for overall survival, distant metastases, and local recurrence using only clinical factors, clinical factors and pretreatment radiomics features, and clinical factors, pretreatment radiomics features, and delta-radiomics features. All of the radiomics features changed significantly during radiation therapy. For overall survival and distant metastases, pretreatment compactness improved the c-index. For local recurrence, pretreatment imaging features were not prognostic, while texture-strength measured at the end of treatment significantly stratified high- and low-risk patients. These results suggest radiomics features change due to radiation therapy and their values at the end of treatment may be indicators of tumor response.

Abstract: Purpose Many radiomics features were originally developed for non-medical imaging applications and therefore original assumptions may need to be reexamined. In this study, we investigated the impact of slice thickness and pixel spacing (or pixel size) on radiomics features extracted from Computed Tomography (CT) phantom images acquired with different scanners as well as different acquisition and reconstruction parameters. The dependence of CT texture features on gray-level discretization was also evaluated. Methods and materials A texture phantom composed of 10 different cartridges of different materials was scanned on eight different CT scanners from three different manufacturers. The images were reconstructed for various slice thicknesses. For each slice thickness, the reconstruction Field Of View (FOV) was varied to render pixel sizes ranging from 0.39 to 0.98 mm. A fixed spherical region of interest (ROI) was contoured on the images of the shredded rubber cartridge and the 3D printed, 20% fill, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic cartridge (ABS20) for all phantom imaging sets. Radiomic features were extracted from the ROIs using an in-house program. Features categories were: shape (10), intensity (16), GLCM (24), GLZSM (11), GLRLM (11), and NGTDM (5), fractal dimensions (8) and first-order wavelets (128), for a total of 213 features. Voxel-size resampling was performed to investigate the usefulness of extracting features using a suitably chosen voxel size. Acquired phantom image sets were resampled to a voxel size of 1 × 1 × 2 mm3 using linear interpolation. Image features were therefore extracted from resampled and original datasets and the absolute value of the percent coefficient of variation (%COV) for each feature was calculated. Abstract: Purpose Routine quality assurance (QA) testing to identify malfunctions in medical imaging devices is a standard practice and plays an important role in meeting quality standards. However, current daily computed tomography (CT) QA techniques have proven to be inadequate for the detection of subtle artifacts on scans. Therefore, we investigated the ability of a radiomics phantom to detect subtle artifacts not detected in conventional daily QA. Methods An updated credence cartridge radiomics phantom was used in this study, with a focus on two of the cartridges (rubber and cork) in the phantom. The phantom was scanned using a Siemens Definition Flash CT scanner, which was reported to produce a subtle line pattern artifact. Images were then imported into the IBEX software program, and 49 features were extracted from the two cartridges using four different preprocessing techniques. Each feature was then compared with features for the same scanner several months previously and with features from controlled CT scans obtained using 100 scanners. Results Of 196 total features for the test scanner, 79 (40%) from the rubber cartridge and 70 (36%) from the cork cartridge were three or more standard deviations away from the mean of the controlled scan population data. Feature values for the artifact‐producing scanner were closer to the population mean when features were preprocessed with Butterworth smoothing. The feature most sensitive to the artifact was co‐occurrence matrix maximum probability. The deviation from the mean for this feature was more than seven times greater when the scanner was malfunctioning (7.56 versus 1.01). Conclusions Radiomics features extracted from a texture phantom were able to identify an artifact‐producing scanner as an outlier among 100 CT scanners. This preliminary analysis demonstrated the potential of radiomics in CT QA to identify subtle artifacts not detected using the currently employed daily QA techniques.

Abstract: Background: Radiomics features have been used in a variety of studies to predict patient outcomes or aid in the diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer. However, no guidelines exist for the best way to calculate these features to maximize their prognostic potential. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate how different image pre-processing techniques may impact both the volume dependence and prognostic potential of the features in univariate analyses. Methods: Radiomics features from the histogram, co-occurrence matrix, neighborhood gray-tone difference matrix and run-length matrix were calculated from a set of computed tomography (CT) images of 107 non-small cell lung cancer tumors with volumes ranging from 5 to 567 cm3. Features were calculated from the images with no pre-processing, 8 bit depth resampling, Butterworth smoothing, or both 8 bit depth resampling and Butterworth smoothing. To determine which features were correlated with volume, we calculated the Spearman rank correlation coefficient (rs) for each feature and preprocessing combination. For features that had very high volume correlations (rs >0.95) regardless of which preprocessing algorithm was used, we normalized the algorithm for volume and recalculated the volume correlation. To determine whether the preprocessing technique affected the usefulness of the feature, we fitted univariate Cox proportional hazards models for all four preprocessing techniques for each feature and calculated the P value. Additionally, univariate cox models were recalculated using leave-one-out cross validation to generate risk predictions for each patient. As a result, each patient had a predicted outcome for each model in which the patient was not involved in the model building. The prediction accuracy was assessed using Harrell’s concordance index (c-index). Finally, the ability of each feature to improve model fit was examined using the P value of the log-likelihood ratio between a model built using volume only and a model built using volume and one radiomics feature. The Benjamini-Hochberg procedure was used for multiplicity correction. Results: Five features were entirely volume dependent (busyness, coarseness, grey-level non-uniformity, run-length non-uniformity, and energy) and new algorithms were proposed for these features. Both the correlation with volume and the prognostic value of individual features changed substantially with different preprocessing techniques. In general, preprocessed features that were at least slightly correlated with volume (rs >0.5) were more likely to be significant in the univariate analysis. Additionally, Butterworth smoothing, used either alone or in conjunction with 8 bit depth resampling, most often yielded features that were significant in univariate analysis. Conclusions: Preprocessing can have a strong impact on the volume dependence of a feature, and its significance in univariate models. To create standardized features useful for multivariate modeling, it will be important to balance the usefulness of features with their volume dependence.

Abstract: Radiomics has the potential to individualize patient treatment by using images that are already being routinely acquired. Defined as the extraction of quantitative imaging features from clinical images for use in statistical models, radiomics has had success in a variety of tumor sites and imaging modalities. Researchers new to the field must start by choosing software to segment tumors [or other regions of interest (ROI)], extract quantitative image features, and analyze the results. This review describes the various software programs available for these tasks and gives examples of the use of these programs in radiomics research.

Abstract: This paper describes a realistic simulation of a Compton-camera (CC) based prompt-gamma (PG) imaging system for proton range verification for a range of clinical dose rates, and its comparison to PG measured data with a pre-clinical CC. We used a Monte Carlo plus Detector Effects (MCDE) model to simulate the production of prompt gamma-rays (PG) and their energy depositions in the CC. With Monte Carlo, we simulated PG emission resulting from irradiation of a high density polyethylene phantom with a 150 MeV proton pencil beam at dose rates of 5.0 × 108, 2.6 × 109, and 4.6 × 109 p+ s−1. Realistic detector timing effects (e.g. delayed triggering time, event-coincidence, dead time, etc,) were added in post-processing to allow for flexible count rate variations. We acquired PG emission measurements with our pre-clinical CC during irradiation with a clinical 150 MeV proton pencil beam at the same dose rates. For simulations and measurements, three primary changes could be seen in the PG emission data as the dose rate increased: (1) reduction in the total number of detected events due to increased dead-time percentage; (2) increase in false-coincidence events (i.e. multiple PGs interacting, rather than a single PG scatter); and (3) loss of distinct PG emission peaks in the energy spectrum. We used the MCDE model to estimate the quality of our measured PG data, primarily with regards to true and false double-scatters and triple-scatters recorded by the CC. The simulation results showed that of the recorded double-scatter PG interactions 22%, 57%, and 70% were false double-scatters and for triple-scatter interactions 3%, 21%, and 35% were false events at 5.0 × 108, 2.6 × 109, and 4.6 × 109 p+ s−1, respectively. These false scatter events represent noise in the data, and the high percentage of these events in the data represents a major limitation in our ability to produce usable PG images with our prototype CC.

Abstract: Radiomics has shown promise in improving models for predicting patient outcomes. However, to maximize the information gain of the radiomics features, especially in larger patient cohorts, the variability in radiomics features owing to differences between scanners and scanning protocols must be accounted for. To this aim, the imaging variability of radiomics feature values was evaluated on 100 computed tomography scanners at 35 clinics by imaging a radiomics phantom using a controlled protocol and the commonly used chest and head protocols of the local clinic. We used a linear mixed-effects model to determine the degree to which the manufacturer and individual scanners contribute to the overall variability. Using a controlled protocol reduced the overall variability by 57% and 52% compared to the local chest and head protocols respectively. The controlled protocol also reduced the relative contribution of the manufacturer to the total variability. For almost all variabilities (manufacturer, scanner, and residual with different preprocesssing), the controlled protocol scans had a significantly smaller variability than the local protocol scans did. For most radiomics features, the imaging variability was small relative to the inter-patient feature variability in non–small cell lung cancer and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patient cohorts. From this study, we conclude that using controlled scans can reduce the variability in radiomics features, and our results demonstrate the importance of using controlled protocols in prospective radiomics studies.

Abstract: Proton beam radiation treatment was first proposed by Robert Wilson in 1946. The advantage of proton beam radiation is that the lethal dose of radiation is delivered by a sharp increase toward the end of the beam range. This sharp increase, known as the Bragg peak, allows for the possibility of reducing the exposure of healthy tissue to radiation when comparing to x-ray radiation treatment. As the proton beam interacts with the molecules in the body, gamma rays are emitted. The origin of the gamma rays gives the location of the proton beam in the body, therefore, gamma ray imaging allows physicians to better take advantage of the benefits of proton beam radiation. These gamma rays are detected using a Compton Camera (CC) while the SOE algorithm is used to reconstruct images of these gamma rays as they are emitted from the patient. This imaging occurs while the radiation dose is delivered, which would allow the physician to make adjustments in real time in the treatment room, provided the image reconstruction is computed fast enough. This project focuses on speeding up the image reconstruction software with the use of parallel computing techniques involving MPI. Additionally, we demonstrate the use of the VTune performance analyzer to identify bottlenecks in a parallel code. Abstract: Imaging Biomarker Explorer (IBEX) is an open-source tool for medical imaging radiomics work. The purpose of this paper is to describe how to use IBEX's graphical user interface (GUI) and to demonstrate how IBEX calculated features have been used in clinical studies. IBEX allows for the import of DICOM images with DICOM radiation therapy structure files or Pinnacle files. Once the images are imported, IBEX has tools within the Data Selection GUI to manipulate the viewing of the images, measure voxel values and distances, and create and edit contours. IBEX comes with 27 preprocessing and 132 feature choices to design feature sets. Each preprocessing and feature category has parameters that can be altered. The output from IBEX is a spreadsheet that contains: 1) each feature from the feature set calculated for each contour in a data set, 2) image information about each contour in a data set, and 3) a summary of the preprocessing and features used with their selected parameters. Features calculated from IBEX have been used in studies to test the variability of features under different imaging conditions and in survival models to improve current clinical models.

Abstract: Consistent pixel sizes are of fundamental importance for assessing texture features that relate intensity and spatial information in radiomics studies. To correct for the effects of variable pixel sizes, we combined image resampling with Butterworth filtering in the frequency domain and tested the correction on computed tomography (CT) scans of lung cancer patients reconstructed 5 times with pixel sizes varying from 0.59 to 0.98 mm. One hundred fifty radiomics features were calculated for each preprocessing and field-of-view combination. Intra-patient agreement and inter-patient agreement were compared using the overall concordance correlation coefficient (OCCC). To further evaluate the corrections, hierarchical clustering was used to identify patient scans before and after correction. To assess the general applicability of the corrections, they were applied to 17 CT scans of a radiomics phantom. Abstract: Purpose: Increasing evidence suggests radiomics features extracted from computed tomography (CT) images may be useful in prognostic models for patients with nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study was designed to determine whether such features can be reproducibly obtained from cone-beam CT (CBCT) images taken using medical Linac onboard-imaging systems in order to track them through treatment. Methods: Test-retest CBCT images of ten patients previously enrolled in a clinical trial were retrospectively obtained and used to determine the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) for 68 different texture features. The volume dependence of each feature was also measured using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient. Features with a high reproducibility (CCC > 0.9) that were not due to volume dependence in the patient test-retest set were further examined for their sensitivity to differences in imaging protocol, level of scatter, and amount of motion by using two phantoms. The first phantom was a texture phantom composed of rectangular cartridges to represent different textures. Features were measured from two cartridges, shredded rubber and dense cork, in this study. The texture phantom was scanned with 19 different CBCT imagers to establish the features’ interscanner variability. The effect of scatter on these features was studied by surrounding the same texture phantom with scattering material (rice and solid water). The effect of respiratory motion on these features was studied using a dynamic-motion thoracic phantom and a specially designed tumor texture insert of the shredded rubber material. The differences between scans acquired with different Linacs and protocols, varying amounts of scatter, and with different levels of motion were compared to the mean intrapatient difference from the test-retest image set. Results: Of the original 68 features, 37 had a CCC >0.9 that was not due to volume dependence. When the Linac manufacturer and imaging protocol were kept consistent, 4–13 of these 37 features passed our criteria for reproducibility more than 50% of the time, depending on the manufacturer-protocol combination. Almost all of the features changed substantially when scatter material was added around the phantom. For the dense cork, 23 features passed in the thoracic scans and 11 features passed in the head scans when the differences between one and two layers of scatter were compared. Using the same test for the shredded rubber, five features passed the thoracic scans and eight features passed the head scans. Motion substantially impacted the reproducibility of the features. With 4 mm of motion, 12 features from the entire volume and 14 features from the center slice measurements were reproducible. With 6–8 mm of motion, three features (Laplacian of Gaussian filtered kurtosis, gray-level nonuniformity, and entropy), from the entire volume and seven features (coarseness, high gray-level run emphasis, gray-level nonuniformity, sum-average, information measure correlation, scaled mean, and entropy) from the center-slice measurements were considered reproducible. Conclusions: Some radiomics features are robust to the noise and poor image quality of CBCT images when the imaging protocol is consistent, relative changes in the features are used, and patients are limited to those with less than 1 cm of motion.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the significance of interscanner variability in CT image radiomics studies.We compared the radiomics features calculated for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumors from 20 patients with those calculated for 17 scans of a specially designed radiomics phantom. The phantom comprised 10 cartridges, each filled with different materials to produce a wide range of radiomics feature values. The scans were acquired using General Electric, Philips, Siemens, and Toshiba scanners from 4 medical centers using their routine thoracic imaging protocol. The radiomics feature studied included the mean and standard deviations of the CT numbers as well as textures derived from the neighborhood gray-tone difference matrix. To quantify the significance of the interscanner variability, we introduced the metric feature noise. To look for patterns in the scans, we performed hierarchical clustering for each cartridge.The mean CT numbers for the 17 CT scans of the phantom cartridges spanned from -864 to 652 Hounsfield units compared with a span of -186 to 35 Hounsfield units for the CT scans of the NSCLC tumors, showing that the phantom's dynamic range includes that of the tumors. The interscanner variability of the feature values depended on both the cartridge material and the feature, and the variability was large relative to the interpatient variability in the NSCLC tumors for some features. The feature interscanner noise was greatest for busyness and least for texture strength. Hierarchical clustering produced different clusters of the phantom scans for each cartridge, although there was some consistent clustering by scanner manufacturer.The variability in the values of radiomics features calculated on CT images from different CT scanners can be comparable to the variability in these features found in CT images of NSCLC tumors. These interscanner differences should be considered, and their effects should be minimized in future radiomics studies.

Abstract: A new detector system, Polaris J from H3D, has been evaluated for its potential application as a Compton camera (CC) imaging device for prompt γ rays (PGs) emitted during proton radiation therapy (RT) for the purpose of dose range verification. This detector system consists of four independent CdZnTe detector stages and a coincidence module, allowing the user to construct a Compton camera in different geometrical configurations and to accept both double and triple scatter events. Energy resolution for the 662 keV line from 137Cs was found to be 9.7 keV FWHM. The raw absolute efficiencies for double and triple scatter events were 2.2 × 10 − 5 and 5.8 × 10 − 7 , respectively, for γs from a 60Co source. The position resolution for the reconstruction of a point source from the measured CC data was about 2 mm. Overall, due to the low efficiency of the Polaris J CC, the current system was deemed not viable for imaging PGs emitted during proton RT treatment delivery. However, using a validated Monte Carlo model of the CC, we found that by increasing the size of the detectors and placing them in a two stage configuration, the efficiency could be increased to a level to make PG imaging possible during proton RT.

Abstract: An intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA) program based on measurement alone can be very time consuming due to the highly modulated dose distributions of IMPT fields. Incorporating independent dose calculation and treatment log file analysis could reduce the time required for measurements. In this article, we summarize our effort to develop an efficient and effective PSQA program that consists of three components: measurements, independent dose calculation, and analysis of patient-specific treatment delivery log files. Measurements included two-dimensional (2D) measurements using an ionization chamber array detector for each field delivered at the planned gantry angles with the electronic medical record (EMR) system in the QA mode and the accelerator control system (ACS) in the treatment mode, and additional measurements at depths for each field with the ACS in physics mode and without the EMR system. Dose distributions for each field in a water phantom were calculated independently using a recently developed in-house pencil beam algorithm and compared with those obtained using the treatment planning system (TPS). The treatment log file for each field was analyzed in terms of deviations in delivered spot positions from their planned positions using various statistical methods. Using this improved PSQA program, we were able to verify the integrity of the data transfer from the TPS to the EMR to the ACS, the dose calculation of the TPS, and the treatment delivery, including the dose delivered and spot positions. On the basis of this experience, we estimate that the in-room measurement time required for each complex IMPT case (e.g., a patient receiving bilateral IMPT for head and neck cancer) is less than 1 h using the improved PSQA program. Our experience demonstrates that it is possible to develop an efficient and effective PSQA program for IMPT with the equipment and resources available in the clinic.

The aim of this study was to investigate how quantitative texture parameters using image filtering vary among different computed tomography (CT) scanners using a phantom developed for radiomics studies. A phantom, consisting of 10 different cartridges with various textures, was scanned under 6 different scanning protocols using four CT scanners from four different vendors. CT texture analyses were performed for both unfiltered images and filtered images (using a Laplacian of Gaussian spatial band-pass filter) featuring fine, medium, and coarse textures. Forty-five regions of interest were placed for each cartridge (x) in a specific scan image set (y), and the average of the texture values (T(x,y)) was calculated. The interquartile range (IQR) of T(x,y) among the 6 scans was calculated for a specific cartridge (IQR(x)), while the IQR of T(x,y) among the 10 cartridges was calculated for a specific scan (IQR(y)), and the median IQR(y) was then calculated for the 6 scans (as the control IQR, IQRc). The median of their quotient (IQR(x)/IQRc) among the 10 cartridges was defined as the variability index (VI). The VI was relatively small for the mean in unfiltered images (0.011) and for standard deviation (0.020–0.044) and entropy (0.040–0.044) in filtered images. Skewness and kurtosis in filtered images featuring medium and coarse textures were relatively variable across different CT scanners, with VIs of 0.638–0.692 and 0.430–0.437, respectively. Various quantitative CT texture parameters are robust and variable among different scanners, and the behavior of these parameters should be taken into consideration.

Abstract: Purpose: The prompt gamma radiation emitted from tissue during proton therapy offers a means of beam range verification. Compton camera (CC) imaging systems offer high efficiency and 3D imaging capability. However, Doppler broadening and the inaccuracies in the measurement of the scattering positions and energies reduce the image resolution. The purpose of our study is to determine if removing events with a distance‐of‐closest‐approach greater than a threshold value will improve the resolution of imagesreconstructed using the stochastic origins ensemble (SOE) algorithm. Methods: We first simulated a 3‐stage CC detecting gammas from a 0.511 MeV point source. We then used SOE to reconstructimages from the point source and from a) all gammas, b) gammas with DCA < 3 mm, and c) gammas with DCA < 1 mm. We measured the point‐spread‐function for the point source for a), b), and c). Next, we simulated a 3‐stage CC detecting prompt gammas emitted from tissue during proton therapy. We reconstructed the gammas using SOE and compared 2D images of all gammas, gammas with DCA < 3 mm, and gammas with DCA < 1 mm. Results: The FWHM of the PSF of the 0.511 MeV point source was reduced by 50% when DCA was required to be < 5 mm, and it was reduced by 65% when DCA was required to be < 3 mm. 2D images of a proton beam are of visibly higher quality as the DCA requirement is lowered. Conclusions: The DCA for MC events can be used to identify the events with significant resolution loss due to the detector effects. Removing these events before running the reconstruction algorithm results in higher quality images. We discuss methods to predict the DCA based on the measured scatter data, so that a similar technique can be applied to data from real detectors. Abstract: To develop a model using radiomic features extracted from MR images to distinguish radiation necrosis from tumour progression in brain metastases after Gamma Knife radiosurgery.We retrospectively identified 87 patients with pathologically confirmed necrosis (24 lesions) or progression (73 lesions) and calculated 285 radiomic features from four MR sequences (T1, T1 post-contrast, T2, and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery) obtained at two follow-up time points per lesion per patient. Reproducibility of each feature between the two time points was calculated within each group to identify a subset of features with distinct reproducible values between two groups. Changes in radiomic features from one time point to the next (delta radiomics) were used to build a model to classify necrosis and progression lesions.A combination of five radiomic features from both T1 post-contrast and T2 MR images were found to be useful in distinguishing necrosis from progression lesions. Delta radiomic features with a RUSBoost ensemble classifier had an overall predictive accuracy of 73.2% and an area under the curve value of 0.73 in leave-one-out cross-validation.Delta radiomic features extracted from MR images have potential for distinguishing radiation necrosis from tumour progression after radiosurgery for brain metastases.• Some radiomic features showed better reproducibility for progressive lesions than necrotic ones • Delta radiomic features can help to distinguish radiation necrosis from tumour progression • Delta radiomic features had better predictive value than did traditional radiomic features.

Abstract: Background and purpose Oligometastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a heterogeneous condition with few known risk stratification factors. A quantitative imaging feature (QIF) on positron emission tomography (PET), gray-level co-occurrence matrix energy, has been linked with outcome of nonmetastatic NSCLC. We hypothesized that GLCM energy would enhance the ability of models comprising standard clinical prognostic factors (CPFs) to stratify oligometastatic patients based on overall survival (OS). Materials and methods We assessed 79 patients with oligometastatic NSCLC (≤3 metastases) diagnosed in 2007–2015. The primary and largest metastases at diagnosis were delineated on pretreatment scans with GLCM energy extracted using imaging biomarker explorer (IBEX) software. Iterative stepwise elimination feature selection based on the Akaike information criterion identified the optimal model comprising CPFs for predicting OS in a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model. GLCM energy was tested for improving prediction accuracy. Results Energy was a significant predictor of OS (P = 0.028) in addition to the selected CPFs. The c-indexes for the CPF-only and CPF + Energy models were 0.720 and 0.739. Conclusions Incorporating Energy strengthened a CPF model for predicting OS. These findings support further exploration of QIFs, including markers of the primary tumor vs. those of the metastatic sites.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the feasibility of using the stochastic origin ensemble (SOE) algorithm for reconstructing images of secondary gammas emitted during proton radiotherapy from data measured with a three-stage Compton camera. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of the images of the gamma rays emitted during proton irradiation produced using the SOE algorithm and to measure how well the images reproduce the distal falloff of the beam. For our evaluation, we performed a Monte Carlo simulation of an ideal three-stage Compton camera positioned above and orthogonal to a proton pencil beam irradiating a tissue phantom. Scattering of beam protons with nuclei in the phantom produces secondary gamma rays, which are detected by the Compton camera and used as input to the SOE algorithm. We studied the SOE reconstructed images as a function of the number of iterations, the voxel probability parameter, and the number of detected gammas used by the SOE algorithm. We quantitatively evaluated the capabilities of the SOE algorithm by calculating and comparing the normalized mean square error (NMSE) of SOE reconstructed images. We also studied the ability of the SOE reconstructed images to predict the distal falloff of the secondary gamma production in the irradiated tissue. Our results show that the images produced with the SOE algorithm converge in ~10,000 iterations, with little improvement to the image NMSE for iterations above this number. We found that the statistical noise of the images is inversely proportional to the ratio of the number of gammas detected to the SOE voxel probability parameter value. In our study, the SOE predicted distal falloff of the reconstructed images agrees with the Monte Carlo calculated distal falloff of the gamma emission profile in the phantom to within ±0.6 mm for the positions of maximum emission (100%) and 90%, 50%, and 20% distal falloff of the gamma emission profile. We conclude that the SOE algorithm is an effective method for reconstructing images of a proton pencil beam from the data collected by an ideal Compton camera and that these images accurately model the distal falloff of secondary gamma emission during proton irradiation.

Abstract: We report results from searches for neutral Higgs bosons produced in p-pbar collisions recorded by the Dzero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We study the production of inclusive neutral Higgs boson in the tautau final state and in association with a b quark in the btautau and bbb final states. These results are combined to improve the sensitivity to the production of neutral Higgs bosons in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). The data are found to be consistent with expectation from background processes. Upper limits on MSSM Higgs boson production are set for Higgs boson masses ranging from 90 to 300 GeV. We exclude tanBeta>20-30 for Higgs boson masses below 180 GeV. These are the most stringent constraints on MSSM Higgs boson production in p-pbar collisions.

Abstract: We present new direct constraints on a general $Wtb$ interaction using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the D0 detector at the Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider. The standard model provides a purely left-handed vector coupling at the $Wtb$ vertex, while the most general, lowest dimension Lagrangian allows right-handed vector and left- or right-handed tensor couplings as well. We obtain precise limits on these anomalous couplings by comparing the data to the expectations from different assumptions on the $Wtb$ coupling.

Abstract: We present a search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into τ + τ − pairs in p p ¯ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1, were collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set upper limits at the 95% C.L. on the product of production cross section and branching ratio for a scalar resonance decaying into τ + τ − pairs, and we interpret these limits as limits on the production of Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and as constraints in the MSSM parameter space.

Abstract: We present a model-independent measurement of $t$-channel electroweak production of single top quarks in $\ppbar$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96\;\rm TeV$. Using $5.4\;\rm fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and selecting events containing an isolated electron or muon, missing transverse energy and one or two jets originating from the fragmentation of $b$ quarks, we measure a cross section $\sigma({\ppbar}{\rargap}tqb+X) = 2.90 \pm 0.59\;\rm (stat+syst)\; pb$ for a top quark mass of $172.5\;\rm GeV$. The probability of the background to fluctuate and produce a signal as large as the one observed is $1.6\times10^{-8}$, corresponding to a significance of 5.5 standard deviations.

Abstract: This Letter describes measurements of inclusive W (--> e nu) + n jet cross sections (n = 1-4), presented as total inclusive cross sections and differentially in the nth jet transverse momentum. The measurements are made using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb-1 collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and achieve considerably smaller uncertainties on W +jets production cross sections than previous measurements. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations in the n =1-3 jet multiplicity bins and to leading order pQCD calculations in the 4-jet bin. The measurements are generally in agreement with pQCD predictions, although certain regions of phase space are identified where the calculations could be improved.

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the inclusive three-jet differential cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the three jets with the largest transverse momenta in an event in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The measurement is made in different rapidity regions and for different jet transverse momentum requirements and is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb^{-1} collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are used to test the three-jet matrix elements in perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant. The data allow discrimination between parametrizations of the parton distribution functions of the proton.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the a production cross section sigma((u) over bar) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using 5.4 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector. We consider final states with at least two jets and two leptons (ee, e mu, mu mu), and events with one jet for the e mu final state as well. The measured cross section is sigma((u) over bar) = 7.36(-0.79)(+0.90)(stat + syst) pb. This result combined with the cross section measurement in the lepton + jets final state yields sigma((u) over bar) = 7.56(-0.56)(+0.63)(stat + syst) pb, which agrees with the standard model expectation. The relative precision of 8% of this measurement is comparable to the precision of the latest theoretical calculations. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We use higher-order quantum chromodynamics calculations to extract the mass of the top quark from the ttbar cross section measured in the lepton+jets channel in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using 5.3 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The extracted top quark pole mass and MSbar mass are compared to the current Tevatron average top quark mass obtained from direct measurements.

Abstract: We measure the correlation between the spin of the top quark and the spin of the anti-top quark in (ttbar -> W+ W- b bbar -> l+ nu b l- nubar bbar) final states produced in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, where l is an electron or muon. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 and were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The correlation is extracted from the angles of the two leptons in the t and tbar rest frames, yielding a correlation strength C= 0.10^{+0.45}_{-0.45}, in agreement with the NLO QCD prediction within two standard deviations, but also in agreement with the no correlation hypothesis.

Abstract: Data recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider are analyzed to search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks. The search is performed in the three-b-quark channel using multijet-triggered events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2fb-1. In the absence of any significant excess above background, limits are set on the cross section multiplied by the branching ratio in the Higgs boson mass range 90 to 300 GeV, extending the excluded regions in the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the WZ -> lvll (l = e, mu) cross section and limits on anomalous triple gauge couplings. Using 4.1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV, we observe 34 WZ candidate events with an estimated background of 6.0 +/- 0.4 events. We measure the WZ production cross section to be 3.89(-0.90)(+1.07) pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction. We find no evidence for anomalous WWZ couplings and set 95% C.L. limits on the coupling parameters, -0.077 < lambda(z) < 0.093 and -0.029 < Delta kappa(z) < 0.080 in the HISZ parameterization for a Lambda = 2 TeV form factor scale. These are the best limits to date obtained from the direct measurement of the WWZ vertex.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the differential cross section for $t\bar{t}$ events produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) of the top quark. The selected events contain a high-$p_T$ lepton ($\ell$), four or more jets, and a large imbalance in $p_T$, and correspond to 1 fb${}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector. Each event must have at least one candidate for a $b$ jet. Objects in the event are associated through a constrained kinematic fit to the $t\bar{t}\to WbW\bar{b} \to \ell\nu b q\bar{q}'\bar{b}$ process. Results from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations agree with the measured differential cross section. Comparisons are also provided to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators using QCD calculations at different levels of precision.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the Z/gamma* transverse momentum distribution in the range 0-330 GeV, in proton-antiproton collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. The measurement uses 0.97 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded by the D0 experiment and is the first using the Z/gamma* -> mu(+)mu(-) + X channel at this center-of-mass energy. This is also the first measurement of the Z/gamma* transverse momentum distribution that presents the result at the level of particles entering the detector, minimizing dependence on theoretical models. As any momentum of the Z/gamma* in the plane transverse to the incoming beams must be balanced by some recoiling system, primarily the result of QCD radiation in the initial state, this variable is an excellent probe of the underlying process. Tests of the predictions of QCD calculations and current event generators show they have varied success in describing the data. Using this measurement as an input to theoretical predictions will allow for a better description of hadron collider data and hence it will increase experimental sensitivity to rare signals. Abstract: The inclusive dijet production double differential cross section as a function of the dijet invariant mass and of the largest absolute rapidity (y_{max}) of the two jets with the largest transverse momentum in an event is measured in proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV using 0.7 fb^{-1} of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurement is performed in six rapidity regions up to |y|=2.4. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions are found to be in agreement with the data.

Abstract: We present a search for flavor changing neutral currents via quark-gluon couplings in a sample of single top quark final states corresponding to 2.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events containing a single top quark candidates with an additional jet, and obtain separation between signal and background using Bayesian neural networks. We find consistency between background expectation and observed data, and set limits on flavor changing neutral current gluon couplings of the top quark to up quarks (tgu) and charm quarks (tgc). The cross section limits at the 95% C.L. are sigma(tgu) gu) gc) < 3.9 x 10(-3).

Abstract: We report the results of a search for pair production of scalar bottom quarks ((b) over bar (1)) and scalar third-generation leptoquarks (LQ(3)) in 5.2 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at the D0 experiment of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Scalar bottom quarks are assumed to decay to a neutralino ((chi) over bar (1)(0)) and a b quark, and we set 95% C.L. lower limits on their production in the (m((b) over bar1), m((chi) over bar 10)) mass plane such as m((b) over bar1) > 247 GeV for m( 10) = 0 and m((chi) over bar 10) > 110 GeV for 160 m(
