FICTIONAL TOOLS IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY SCIENCE Fictions of the Cosmos: Science and Literature in the Seventeenth Century. Frederique Ait-Touati, translated by Susan Emanuel (University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 201 1). Pp. ? + 261. $45. ISBN 978-0-226-01 122-6.It is a truism that nothing can exasperate us like the things or people we love. And there is much indeed to love in a book by an observant scholar immersed in some of the most bracing seventeenth-century writing about space travel, lunar and stellar prospects, and a universe in which a planetary Earth is truly conceived to move. Thus I shall begin here by admiring Frederique Ait-Touati's contributions to our understanding of literature and the history of astronomy, only afterwards glancing briefly at her book's exasperating faults.Ait-Touati surveys how the fictional tools employed by Johannes Kepler, John Wilkins, William Godwin, Cyrano de Bergerac, Bernard le Bouvier de Fontenelle, Christiaan Huygens, Robert Hooke, and Margaret Cavendish enriched and to a degree enabled science in the seventeenth century. Recognizing "the incertitude inherent in cosmological discourse", Ait-Touati sketches how fictional "poetic responses . . . were adopted to accredit a discourse with a fragile epistemological and ontological status" (p. 191). The "poetic responses" to which she refers are closely akin to thought experiments such as Einstein's famous imaginative account a century ago of "the man in the accelerated chest", which illustrates, as well as lending credibility to, his theory of relativity (p. 191). For her part, Ait-Touati aims to describe the role played in the seventeenth century by what she denominates as imaginary, theoretical, and optical voyages, principal among them the lunar tale recounted by Kepler, story-teller par excellence.Kepler's posthumous Somnium (or Dream), according to Ait-Touati, functions as a "hypotyposis" - a "vivid description of a scene, event, or situation, bringing it, as it were, before the eyes of the hearer or reader" (OED). That imagined voyage to the Moon delivers a vision of the moving Earth, an "autopsy" in that word's etymological sense of "firsthand observation". Thus the fiction of the Dream servesto dramatize, to visualize, an experiment that cannot be performed on Earth, by imagining the physical consequences of the displacement of a body in space. In this sense, the Dream's fable is a thought-experiment. The role of lunar fiction is then a textual test . . .: What would be the consequences of sending a human body into space? Abstract

For more than three centuries scientists, historians, and popularizers of science have been repeating the claim that Copernicus “dethroned” earth from its “privileged” central position in the universe. However, a survey of pre-Copernican natural philosophy (which viewed the earth as located in a cosmic sump) and of Copernicans’ own account of the axiological meaning of the new heliocentric astronomy (which exalted earth to the dance of the stars) demonstrates that the cliche about earth’s “demotion” is unwarranted and fit to be discarded.

The period from the discovery of Tycho’s New Star in 1572 to Galileo’s “geometrization of astronomical space” in 1610 (and the years following) saw the disintegration of the boundary between the sublunary and superlunary spheres—between the “lower storey” and “upper storey” of the Aristotelian Universe. This establishment of a strong physical affinity between the universe “up there” and the earthly realm “down here” was also complemented by the rise of Copernicanism: for once the Earth was seen as a planet, the other planets could readily be imagined as other Earths. This analogy suggested not only physical but also biological affinities and supported the plausibility of humans’ capacity to travel to the Moon and beyond. Robert Burton—given the demise of Aristotle’s physics—declared in 1621 that “If the heavens be penetrable … it were not amiss in this aerial progress to make wings and fly up.” John Wilkins and Francis Godwin in the 1630s actively imagined creatures in the Moon and human journeys thither. The epic poet John Milton in 1667 hinted that “every star [is] perhaps a world / Of destined habitation.” Moreover, space travel was no one-way street: Thomas Traherne in the 1670s imagined a dweller among the stars visiting Earth and remarking on what must be the condition of its inhabitants. In these and other ways, seventeenth-century writers offered serious and impressive speculation about extraterrestrial life and its possible perceptions of Earth. Such speculations remain pertinent to astrobiological theory today. What Hans Blumenberg in the 1970s called “reflexive telescopics”—the examination of Earth from an imagined extraterrestrial viewpoint—is an important counterpart to the search for life “out there.” It serves as a reminder of the obvious but profound premise that Earth is part of the cosmos. At a popular level we often continue to speak of “outer space” as if the old “two-storey” picture of the universe still had some residual legitimacy. However, if Galileo, Wilkins, and other devotees of the New Astronomy were right about Earth’s being a full participant in “the dance of the stars,” then “outer” is a merely relative and parochial term, not a scientific or qualitative one. And it is no trivial claim to assert that the search for intelligent life in the universe has already identified its first specimens.
