Abstract

In this paper, we present a technique for the discovery of hybrid process models that combine imperative and declarative constructs. In particular, we first employ the popular Inductive Miner to generate a fully imperative model from a log. Like most imperative miners, the Inductive Miner tends to return so-called flower models for the less structured parts of the process. These parts are often imprecise. To counter these imprecise parts, we replace them with declarative models to increase the precision since declarative models are good at specifying which behavior is disallowed. The approach has been implemented in ProM and tested on several synthetic and real-life event logs. Our experiments show that hybrid models can be found to be more precise without overfitting the data.

Abstract

Healthcare can be considerably expensive for both patients and insurance companies. In some cases, high costs in healthcare are an indirect outcome of a low quality of care, for example, when treatments have to be repeated. Unfortunately, identifying the factors that lead to such repetitions is a complex and challenging task. In this paper, we focus on the domain of dental healthcare and develop an approach that can predict treatment repetitions in the context of the implant denture therapy process. The challenges associated with predicting treatment repetitions in this setting are considerable. First, hardly any patient undergoes the exact same series of treatments like another. This results in a high degree of variation in the data. Second, only a few patients experience treatment repetitions. This lead to a highly imbalance in the data. To address these challenges, we develop a prediction technique that particularly exploits the process perspective. What is more, we apply so-called resampling methods to deal with the imbalance in the data. Our resulting model is able to predict treatment repetitions with an AUC value of 0.69.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe two epizootics of high mortalities from infection with Streptococcus agalactiae, occurring in captive rays held in a marine display aquarium in south-east Queensland, Australia, in 2009 and 2010. Five different species of rays were affected, including mangrove whiprays (Himantura granulata), estuary rays (Dasyatis fluviorum), eastern shovelnose rays (Aptychotrema rostrata), white-spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) and blue-spotted mask rays (Neotrygon kuhlii). This report describes the history of both epizootics including collection, quarantine and husbandry of rays, the disease epizootics, clinico-pathological features of the disease, antimicrobial therapy, autogenous vaccine production, and laboratory studies including clinical and histopathology, bacteriology, PCR, molecular serotyping and sequencing of the bacterium S. agalactiae.

Abstract

Declarative languages are becoming more popular for modelling business processes with a high degree of variability. Unlike procedural languages, where the models define what is to be done, a declarative model specifies what behaviour is not allowed, using constraints on process events. In this paper, we study how to support configurability in such a declarative setting. We take Declare as an example of a declarative process modelling language and introduce Configurable Declare. Configurability is achieved by using configuration options for event hiding and constraint omission. We illustrate our approach using a case study, based on process models of ten Dutch municipalities. A Configurable Declare model is constructed supporting the variations within these municipalities.

Abstract

Soft tissue sarcomas ( STSs) are locally invasive and surgery with or without radiation therapy is the current standard of care in dogs. Typical protocols for treating incompletely excised STSs involve curative intent radiation with total dose in excess of 50 Gy. Forty-eight dogs with histologically confirmed incomplete or closely excised STSs were treated with a hypofractionated protocol that is typically reserved for palliative radiation therapy ( RT) (6-8 Gy/weekly fractions to a total dose of 24-32 Gy). Ten dogs (21%) developed local recurrence, 11 dogs (23%) developed metastasis, and 3 dogs developed both (included in each group). The median progression free survival was 698 days. The local failure-free probability at 1 and 3 years was 81 and 73%. The 1 and 3 years tumour-specific overall survival was 81 and 61%. Long-term local tumour control was achieved in the majority of dogs. This protocol is reasonable to prescribe in older patients or when financial limitations exist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

There is an increasing need for more accurate prognostic and predictive markers in veterinary oncology because of an increasing number of treatment options, the increased financial costs associated with treatment, and the emotional stress experienced by owners in association with the disease and its treatment. Numerous studies have evaluated potential prognostic and predictive markers for veterinary neoplastic diseases, but there are no established guidelines or standards for the conduct and reporting of prognostic studies in veterinary medicine. This lack of standardization has made the evaluation and comparison of studies difficult. Most important, translating these results to clinical applications is problematic. To address this issue, the American College of Veterinary Pathologists’ Oncology Committee organized an initiative to establish guidelines for the conduct and reporting of prognostic studies in veterinary oncology. The goal of this initiative is to increase the quality and standardization of veterinary prognostic studies to facilitate independent evaluation, validation, comparison, and implementation of study results. This article represents a consensus statement on the conduct and reporting of prognostic studies in veterinary oncology from veterinary pathologists and oncologists from around the world. These guidelines should be considered a recommendation based on the current state of knowledge in the field, and they will need to be continually reevaluated and revised as the field of veterinary oncology continues to progress. As mentioned, these guidelines were developed through an initiative of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists’ Oncology Committee, and they have been reviewed and endorsed by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association.
