Abstract

The cross section for $\phi$ meson photoproduction on the proton has been measured for the first time up to a four-momentum transfer -t = 4 GeV^2, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. At low four-momentum transfer, the differential cross section is well described by Pomeron exchange. At large four-momentum transfer, above -t = 1.8 GeV^2, the data support a model where the Pomeron is resolved into its simplest component, two gluons, which may couple to any quark in the proton and in the $\phi$., Comment: 5 pages; 7 figures

Abstract

Fusion evaporation-residue cross sections for the Si28+12C reaction have been measured in the energy range 18≤Ec.m.≤136 MeV using time-of-flight techniques. Velocity distributions of mass-identified reaction products were used to identify evaporation residues and to determine the complete-fusion cross sections at high energies. The data are in agreement with previously established systematics which indicate an entrance-channel mass-asymmetry dependence of the incomplete-fusion evaporation-residue process. The complete-fusion evaporation-residue cross sections and the deduced critical angular momenta are compared with earlier measurements and the predictions of existing models.

14. Pvmgeant- a Parallel Simulation Code for the Clas Detector At Cebaf.

Abstract

Due to the need for extensive and detailed simulations of the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), the Monte-Carlo code CLASGeant was transferred to a heterogeneous computing cluster and has been linked to the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) message-passing library. The resulting simulation package, PvmGeant, achieves an almost linear speedup in physics-event simulation. This article describes modifications to the original GEANT code, its integration with PVM, and performance tests that were conducted at the comput ing cluster at The Supercomputing Computations Re search Institute at Florida State University. Particular attention has been given to measuring the effect of different data structures on the cost of network com munication between nodes. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The tantalizing problem of the “quenching” of the Coulomb sum rule observed in medium weight nuclei is investigated in light nuclei at high momentum transfer. Inclusive electron scattering cross sections for 3,4He have been measured in the quasielastic region at electron energies between 0.9 GeV and 4.3 GeV, and scattering angles of 15° and 85°. Longitudinal (RL) and transverse (RT) response functions have been extracted using a Rosenbluth separation at constant ‖q‖of 1.050 (GeV/c). The ratio of the longitudinal to the transverse reduced response functions in the negative yregion reaches unity. The experimental Coulomb sum rule although with large uncertainty and conversly to the case of medium weight nuclei, saturates at high momentum to the He nucleus total charge namely Z=2.
