1. Decoupling Semantic Similarity from Spatial Alignment for Neural Networks

Abstract

What representation do deep neural networks learn? How similar are images to each other for neural networks? Despite the overwhelming success of deep learning methods key questions about their internal workings still remain largely unanswered, due to their internal high dimensionality and complexity. To address this, one approach is to measure the similarity of activation responses to various inputs. Representational Similarity Matrices (RSMs) distill this similarity into scalar values for each input pair. These matrices encapsulate the entire similarity structure of a system, indicating which input leads to similar responses. While the similarity between images is ambiguous, we argue that the spatial location of semantic objects does neither influence human perception nor deep learning classifiers. Thus this should be reflected in the definition of similarity between image responses for computer vision systems. Revisiting the established similarity calculations for RSMs we expose their sensitivity to spatial alignment. In this paper, we propose to solve this through semantic RSMs, which are invariant to spatial permutation. We measure semantic similarity between input responses by formulating it as a set-matching problem. Further, we quantify the superiority of semantic RSMs over spatio-semantic RSMs through image retrieval and by comparing the similarity between representations to the similarity between predicted class probabilities., Comment: Accepted at NeurIPS2024

2. A fully-coupled algorithm with implicit surface tension treatment for interfacial flows with large density ratios

Abstract

The stability of most surface-tension-driven interfacial flow simulations is governed by the capillary time-step constraint. This concerns particularly small-scale flows and, more generally, highly-resolved liquid-gas simulations with moderate inertia. To date, the majority of interfacial-flow simulations are performed using an explicit surface-tension treatment, which restrains the performance of such simulations. Recently, an implicit treatment of surface tension able to breach the capillary time-step constraint using the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method was proposed, based on a fully-coupled pressure-based finite-volume algorithm. To this end, the interface-advection equation is incorporated implicitly into the linear flow solver, resulting in a tight coupling between all implicit solution variables (colour function, pressure, velocity). However, this algorithm is limited to uniform density and viscosity fields. Here, we present a fully-coupled algorithm for interfacial flows with implicit surface tension applicable to interfacial flows with large density and viscosity ratios. This is achieved by solving the continuity and momentum equations in conservative form, whereby the density is treated implicitly with respect to the colour function, and the advection term of the interface-advection equation is discretised using the THINC/QQ algebraic VOF scheme, yielding a consistent discretisation of the advective terms. This new algorithm is tested by considering representative surface-tension-dominated interfacial flows, including the Laplace equilibrium of a stationary droplet and the three-dimensional Rayleigh-Plateau instability of a liquid filament. The presented results demonstrate that interfacial flows with large density and viscosity ratios can be simulated and energy conservation is ensured, even with a time step larger than the capillary time-step constraint.

3. Modified Characteristics of Hadronic Interactions in Ultra-high-energy Cosmic-ray Showers

Abstract

Data from multiple experiments suggest that the current interaction models used in Monte Carlo simulations do not correctly reproduce the hadronic interactions in air showers produced by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR), in particular - but not limited to - the production of muons during the showers. We have created a large library of UHECR simulations where the interactions at the highest energies are slightly modified in various ways - but always within the constraints of the accelerator data, without any abrupt changes with energy and without assuming any specific mechanism or dramatically new physics at the ultra-high energies. We find that even when very different properties - cross-section, elasticity and multiplicity - of the interactions are modified, the resulting changes in some air-shower observables are still mutually correlated. Thus not all possible combinations of changes of observables are easily reproduced by some combination of the modifications. Most prominently, the recent results of the Pierre Auger Observatory, which call for a change in the prediction of both the muon content at ground and the depth of the maximum of longitudinal development of the showers, are rather difficult to reproduce with such modifications, in particular when taking into account other cosmic-ray data. Abstract

Accurate segmentation of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) lesions in longitudinal MRI scans is crucial for monitoring disease progression and treatment efficacy. Although changes across time are taken into account when assessing images in clinical practice, most existing deep learning methods treat scans from different timepoints separately. Among studies utilizing longitudinal images, a simple channel-wise concatenation is the primary albeit suboptimal method employed to integrate timepoints. We introduce a novel approach that explicitly incorporates temporal differences between baseline and follow-up scans through a unique architectural inductive bias called Difference Weighting Block. It merges features from two timepoints, emphasizing changes between scans. We achieve superior scores in lesion segmentation (Dice Score, Hausdorff distance) as well as lesion detection (lesion-level $F_1$ score) as compared to state-of-the-art longitudinal and single timepoint models across two datasets. 5. NLO EW and QCD corrections to polarised same-sign WW scattering at the LHC

Abstract

We present the first calulation of same-sign WW scattering at the LHC in the fully leptonic decay channel including the modelling of polarisation for intermediate electroweak bosons and radiative corrections up to NLO EW+QCD accuracy. The predictions rely on a pole expansion and on the split of polarisation states at matrix-element level. Doubly-polarised and unpolarised signals are investigated together with full off-shell results. A detailed phenomenlogical analysis is carried out focusing on differential observables that discriminate between polarisation states, paving the way for refined polarisation-oriented analyses of vector-boson scattering with Run-3 LHC data., Comment: 60 pages, 4 tables, 18 figures

6. Visual Prompt Engineering for Medical Vision Language Models in Radiology

Abstract

Medical image classification in radiology faces significant challenges, particularly in generalizing to unseen pathologies. In contrast, CLIP offers a promising solution by leveraging multimodal learning to improve zero-shot classification performance. However, in the medical domain, lesions can be small and might not be well represented in the embedding space. Therefore, in this paper, we explore the potential of visual prompt engineering to enhance the capabilities of Vision Language Models (VLMs) in radiology. Leveraging BiomedCLIP, trained on extensive biomedical image-text pairs, we investigate the impact of embedding visual markers directly within radiological images to guide the model's attention to critical regions. Our evaluation on the JSRT dataset, focusing on lung nodule malignancy classification, demonstrates that incorporating visual prompts $\unicode{x2013}$ such as arrows, circles, and contours $\unicode{x2013}$ significantly improves classification metrics including AUROC, AUPRC, F1 score, and accuracy. Moreover, the study provides attention maps, showcasing enhanced model interpretability and focus on clinically relevant areas. 7. Correlations for aerodynamic force coefficients of non-spherical particles in compressible flows

Abstract

This study presents particle-resolved direct numerical simulations using three-dimensional body-fitted hexahedral grids to investigate the aerodynamic force and torque coefficients of non-spherical particles in compressible flows. The simulations focus on three particle shapes: a prolate spheroid, an oblate spheroid, and a rod-like particle, across a range of Mach numbers (0.3 to 2.0), angles of attack (0\degree to 90\degree), and particle Reynolds numbers (100 to 300). Results show that particle shape significantly impacts the aerodynamic forces on a particle in a compressible flow, with oblate spheroids exhibiting the highest drag, lift, and torque values. Correlations for these aerodynamic coefficients of the particles in a compressible flow are developed and validated. These correlations advance multiphase flow modeling by improving the accuracy of point-particle simulations for non-spherical particles in compressible flows.

Abstract

Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. 9. NLO corrections to triple vector-boson production in final states with three charged leptons and two jets

Abstract

Tri-boson production together with vector-boson scattering is a privileged channel to study the electroweak structure of the Standard Model. Upcoming LHC running stages will allow to measure these processes at unprecedented accuracy and for all possible final states, which requires to push theory predictions to still unexplored frontiers. In this work we present the first calculation for the process ${\rm p}{\rm p}\to\mu^+\mu^-{\rm e}^+\nu_{\rm e}\,{\rm j}\,{\rm j}$ at the LHC in a tri-boson phase space. We evaluate the three LO contributions, namely the $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^6)$, which contains the genuine tri-boson signature, along with the $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{\rm s}\alpha^5)$ and $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{\rm s}^2\alpha^4)$, and the two $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^7)$ and $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{\rm s}\alpha^6)$ NLO corrections. The calculation is based on full Standard-Model matrix elements, including all resonant and non-resonant terms, complete spin correlations and interference effects. Integrated and differential cross sections are presented for a fiducial region inspired by High Luminosity LHC prospect studies. We find electroweak corrections of $-14\%$ for the fiducial cross section, almost twice as large as for other tri-boson processes., Comment: 35 pages, 15 figures

10. Automated Ensemble Multimodal Machine Learning for Healthcare

Abstract

The application of machine learning in medicine and healthcare has led to the creation of numerous diagnostic and prognostic models. However, despite their success, current approaches generally issue predictions using data from a single modality. This stands in stark contrast with clinician decision-making which employs diverse information from multiple sources. While several multimodal machine learning approaches exist, significant challenges in developing multimodal systems remain that are hindering clinical adoption. In this paper, we introduce a multimodal framework, AutoPrognosis-M, that enables the integration of structured clinical (tabular) data and medical imaging using automated machine learning. AutoPrognosis-M incorporates 17 imaging models, including convolutional neural networks and vision transformers, and three distinct multimodal fusion strategies. In an illustrative application using a multimodal skin lesion dataset, we highlight the importance of multimodal machine learning and the power of combining multiple fusion strategies using ensemble learning. We have open-sourced our framework as a tool for the community and hope it will accelerate the uptake of multimodal machine learning in healthcare and spur further innovation.

Abstract

Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Abstract

Novel states of matter arise in quantum materials due to strong interactions among electrons. A nematic phase breaks the point group symmetry of the crystal lattice and is known to emerge in correlated materials. Here we report the observation of an intra-unit-cell nematic order and signatures of Pomeranchuk instability in the Kagome metal ScV6Sn6. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we reveal a stripe-like nematic order breaking the crystal rotational symmetry within the Kagome lattice itself. Moreover, we identify a set of van Hove singularities adhering to the Kagome layer electrons, which appear along one direction of the Brillouin zone while being annihilated along other high-symmetry directions, revealing a rotational symmetry breaking. Via detailed spectroscopic maps, we further observe an elliptical deformation of Fermi surface, which provides direct evidence for an electronically mediated nematic order. 13. Double-pole approximation for leading-order semi-leptonic vector-boson scattering at the LHC

Abstract

Measuring vector-boson scattering beyond the fully-leptonic final state is becoming possible at the LHC, which demands to have a solid control on the theory predictions for all final states of this class of processes. In this work we present a full off-shell leading-order calculation for the process $\mathrm{p}\mathrm{p} \to \ell \nu_\ell + 4\mathrm{j}$ in two fiducial regions which are particularly relevant for its experimental measurement. In addition to the fully electroweak order, i.e. $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^6)$, we complement our results with $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_\mathrm{s}\alpha^5)$ and $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_\mathrm{s}^2\alpha^4)$ for inclusive predictions. At $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^6)$ we present for the first time a systematic treatment of the process in double-pole approximation and we perform a detailed study of its range of validity by considering inclusive and differential predictions compared to the full off-shell calculation., Comment: 48 pages, 18 figures, two references added, version of JHEP

14. Tri-boson and WH production in the $\mathrm{W}^+\mathrm{W}^+\mathrm{j}\mathrm{j}$ channel: predictions at full NLO accuracy and beyond

Abstract

In this work, we present the first full NLO predictions for the process $\mathrm{p}\mathrm{p}\to\mu^+\nu_\mu\mathrm{e}^+\nu_\mathrm{e}\mathrm{j}\mathrm{j}$ at the LHC in a typical tri-boson phase space. The NLO corrections reach 50% at the level of the fiducial cross section and have a very different hierarchy with respect to vector-boson-scattering phase spaces. By comparing the cross section of the full off-shell process with the sum of contributing on-shell electroweak-boson production subchannels, we find that the process is dominated by WWW and WH production, while vector-boson-scattering topologies still play a non-negligible role. In addition, NLO QCD predictions matched to parton shower which are supplemented by approximate electroweak corrections are provided. For the fiducial cross section, the electroweak corrections turn out to be small but the QCD corrections reach 47%. For the inclusive cross section, matching to parton shower affects the predictions by 7%. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above $10^{17}$ eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum ($X_{max}$) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 EeV (1 EeV = $10^{18}$ eV) has been developed by combining the fluorescence detector-based measurement of $X_{max}$ with the specific features of the surface detector signal through a parameter related to the air shower muon content, derived from the universality of the air shower development. No evidence of a statistically significant signal due to photon primaries was found using data collected in about 12 years of operation. Thus, upper bounds to the integral photon flux have been set using a detailed calculation of the detector exposure, in combination with a data-driven background estimation. The derived 95% confidence level upper limits are 0.0403, 0.01113, 0.0035, 0.0023, and 0.0021 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 EeV, respectively, leading to the most stringent upper limits on the photon flux in the EeV range. Compared with past results, the upper limits were improved by about 40% for the lowest energy threshold and by a factor 3 above 3 EeV, where no candidates were found and the expected background is negligible. The presented limits can be used to probe the assumptions on chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and allow for the constraint of the mass and lifetime phase space of super-heavy dark matter particles., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

We report an investigation of the mass composition of cosmic rays with energies from 3 to 100 EeV (1 EeV=$10^{18}$ eV) using the distributions of the depth of shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$. The analysis relies on ${\sim}50,000$ events recorded by the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. Above energies of 5 EeV, the data set offers a 10-fold increase in statistics with respect to fluorescence measurements at the Observatory. After cross-calibration using the Fluorescence Detector, this enables the first measurement of the evolution of the mean and the standard deviation of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to 100 EeV. Our findings are threefold: (1.) The evolution of the mean logarithmic mass towards a heavier composition with increasing energy can be confirmed and is extended to 100 EeV. (2.) The evolution of the fluctuations of $X_\mathrm{max}$ towards a heavier and purer composition with increasing energy can be confirmed with high statistics. We report a rather heavy composition and small fluctuations in $X_\mathrm{max}$ at the highest energies. (3.) We find indications for a characteristic structure beyond a constant change in the mean logarithmic mass, featuring three breaks that are observed in proximity to the ankle, instep, and suppression features in the energy spectrum., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract

We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$, inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ($10^{20}$ eV), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the Fluorescence Detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average $X_\mathrm{max}$ with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at $6.5\pm0.6~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, $11\pm 2~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, and $31\pm5~(\mathrm{stat})\pm3~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 EeV and 100 EeV., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract

Objective: Federated Learning (FL) enables collaborative model training while keeping data locally. Currently, most FL studies in radiology are conducted in simulated environments due to numerous hurdles impeding its translation into practice. The few existing real-world FL initiatives rarely communicate specific measures taken to overcome these hurdles, leaving behind a significant knowledge gap. Minding efforts to implement real-world FL, there is a notable lack of comprehensive assessment comparing FL to less complex alternatives. Materials & Methods: We extensively reviewed FL literature, categorizing insights along with our findings according to their nature and phase while establishing a FL initiative, summarized to a comprehensive guide. We developed our own FL infrastructure within the German Radiological Cooperative Network (RACOON) and demonstrated its functionality by training FL models on lung pathology segmentation tasks across six university hospitals. We extensively evaluated FL against less complex alternatives in three distinct evaluation scenarios. Results: The proposed guide outlines essential steps, identified hurdles, and proposed solutions for establishing successful FL initiatives conducting real-world experiments. Our experimental results show that FL outperforms less complex alternatives in all evaluation scenarios, justifying the effort required to translate FL into real-world applications. Discussion & Conclusion: Our proposed guide aims to aid future FL researchers in circumventing pitfalls and accelerating translation of FL into radiological applications. Our results underscore the value of efforts needed to translate FL into real-world applications by demonstrating advantageous performance over alternatives, and emphasize the importance of strategic organization, robust management of distributed data and infrastructure in real-world settings.

19. The Kirkwood-Bethe hypothesis for bubble dynamics, cavitation and underwater explosions

Abstract

Pressure-driven bubble dynamics is a major topic of current research in fluid dynamics, driven by innovative medical therapies, sonochemistry, material treatments, and geophysical exploration. First proposed in 1942, the Kirkwood-Bethe hypothesis provides a simple means to close the equations that govern pressure-driven bubble dynamics as well as the resulting flow field and acoustic emissions in spherical symmetry. The models derived from the Kirkwood-Bethe hypothesis can be solved using standard numerical integration methods at a fraction of the computational cost required for fully resolved simulations. Here, the theoretical foundation of the Kirkwood-Bethe hypothesis and contemporary models derived from it are gathered and reviewed, as well as generalized to account for spherically symmetric, cylindrically symmetric, and planar one-dimensional domains. In addition, the underpinning assumptions are clarified and new results that scrutinize the predictive capabilities of the Kirkwood-Bethe hypothesis with respect to the complex acoustic impedance experienced by curved acoustic waves and the formation of shock waves are presented. Although the Kirkwood-Bethe hypothesis is built upon simplifying assumptions and lacks some basic acoustic properties, models derived from it are able to provide accurate predictions under the specific conditions associated with pressure-driven bubble dynamics, cavitation and underwater explosions., Comment: Typos in Section VII have been corrected in this version of the preprint. Abstract

With the wealth of medical image data, efficient curation is essential. Assigning the sequence type to magnetic resonance images is necessary for scientific studies and artificial intelligence-based analysis. However, incomplete or missing metadata prevents effective automation. We therefore propose a deep-learning method for classification of prostate cancer scanning sequences based on a combination of image data and DICOM metadata. We demonstrate superior results compared to metadata or image data alone, and make our code publicly available at https://github.com/deepakri201/DICOMScanClassification.

Abstract

The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. Abstract

Traditionally, segmentation algorithms require dense annotations for training, demanding significant annotation efforts, particularly within the 3D medical imaging field. Scribble-supervised learning emerges as a possible solution to this challenge, promising a reduction in annotation efforts when creating large-scale datasets. Recently, a plethora of methods for optimized learning from scribbles have been proposed, but have so far failed to position scribble annotation as a beneficial alternative. We relate this shortcoming to two major issues: 1) the complex nature of many methods which deeply ties them to the underlying segmentation model, thus preventing a migration to more powerful state-of-the-art models as the field progresses and 2) the lack of a systematic evaluation to validate consistent performance across the broader medical domain, resulting in a lack of trust when applying these methods to new segmentation problems. To address these issues, we propose a comprehensive scribble supervision benchmark consisting of seven datasets covering a diverse set of anatomies and pathologies imaged with varying modalities. We furthermore propose the systematic use of partial losses, i.e. losses that are only computed on annotated voxels. Contrary to most existing methods, these losses can be seamlessly integrated into state-of-the-art segmentation methods, enabling them to learn from scribble annotations while preserving their original loss formulations. Our evaluation using nnU-Net reveals that while most existing methods suffer from a lack of generalization, the proposed approach consistently delivers state-of-the-art performance. Thanks to its simplicity, our approach presents an embarrassingly simple yet effective solution to the challenges of scribble supervision. Source code as well as our extensive scribble benchmarking suite will be made publicly available upon publication.

Abstract

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has the potential to significantly improve diagnostic aid and medical research in radiology. Current CBIR systems face limitations due to their specialization to certain pathologies, limiting their utility. In response, we propose using vision foundation models as powerful and versatile off-the-shelf feature extractors for content-based medical image retrieval. By benchmarking these models on a comprehensive dataset of 1.6 million 2D radiological images spanning four modalities and 161 pathologies, we identify weakly-supervised models as superior, achieving a P@1 of up to 0.594. This performance not only competes with a specialized model but does so without the need for fine-tuning. Our analysis further explores the challenges in retrieving pathological versus anatomical structures, indicating that accurate retrieval of pathological features presents greater difficulty. Despite these challenges, our research underscores the vast potential of foundation models for CBIR in radiology, proposing a shift towards versatile, general-purpose medical image retrieval systems that do not require specific tuning.

Abstract

Tunable quantum materials hold great potential for applications. Of special interest are materials in which small lattice strain induces giant electronic responses. The kagome compounds AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) provide a testbed for such singular electronic states. In this study, through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we provide comprehensive spectroscopic measurements of the giant responses induced by compressive and tensile strains on the charge-density-wave (CDW) order parameter and high-order van Hove singularity (HO-VHS) in CsV3Sb5. We observe a tripling of the CDW gap magnitudes with ~1% strain, accompanied by the changes of both energy and mass of the saddle-point fermions. Our results reveal an anticorrelation between the unconventional CDW order parameter and the mass of a HO-VHS, and highlight the role of the latter in the superconducting pairing. The giant electronic responses uncover a rich strain tunability of the versatile kagome system in studying quantum interplays under lattice perturbations.

25. Automated resummation of electroweak Sudakov logarithms in diboson production at future colliders

Abstract

At energies that are large with respect to the electroweak scale, the electroweak corrections to scattering processes involve large logarithms that have to be resummed to obtain decent predictions. Soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) has been proposed as a suitable framework to allow for this resummation, while retaining non-logarithmic corrections in a consistent way. In this paper, we investigate the approximations needed to use this approach for the calculation of electroweak corrections to off-shell diboson production at high-energy colliders. 26. Acoustic pressure modulation driven by spatially non-uniform flow

Abstract

The recent identification of a modulation of acoustic waves that is driven by spatial velocity gradients, using acoustic black and white hole analogues [Schenke et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 154 (2023), 781-791], has shed new light on the complex interplay of acoustic waves and non-uniform flows. According to the virtual acoustic black hole hypothesis, these findings should be applicable to acoustic waves propagating in non-uniform flows of arbitrary velocity. In this study, the propagation of acoustic waves in non-uniform flows is investigated by incorporating a leading-order model of the acoustic pressure modulation into a Lagrangian wave tracking algorithm. Using this numerical method, the acoustic pressure modulation is recovered accurately in non-uniform subsonic flows. Abstract

We test the predictions of hadronic interaction models regarding the depth of maximum of air-shower profiles, $X_{max}$, and ground-particle signals in water-Cherenkov detectors at 1000 m from the shower core, $S(1000)$, using the data from the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The test consists in fitting the measured two-dimensional ($S(1000)$, $X_{max}$) distributions using templates for simulated air showers produced with hadronic interaction models EPOS-LHC, QGSJet II-04, Sibyll 2.3d and leaving the scales of predicted $X_{max}$ and the signals from hadronic component at ground as free fit parameters. The method relies on the assumption that the mass composition remains the same at all zenith angles, while the longitudinal shower development and attenuation of ground signal depend on the mass composition in a correlated way. The analysis was applied to 2239 events detected by both the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory with energies between $10^{18.5}$ to $10^{19.0}$ eV and zenith angles below $60^\circ$. We found, that within the assumptions of the method, the best description of the data is achieved if the predictions of the hadronic interaction models are shifted to deeper $X_{max}$ values and larger hadronic signals at all zenith angles. Given the magnitude of the shifts and the data sample size, the statistical significance of the improvement of data description using the modifications considered in the paper is larger than $5\sigma$ even for any linear combination of experimental systematic uncertainties., Comment: Published version

28. Single cavitation bubble dynamics in a stagnation flow

Abstract

Jetting of collapsing bubbles is a key aspect in cavitation-driven fluid-solid interactions as it shapes the bubble dynamics and additionally due to its direct interaction with the wall. We study experimentally and numerically the near-wall collapse and jetting of a single bubble seeded into the stagnation flow of a wall jet, i.e. a jet that impinges perpendicular onto a solid wall. High-speed imaging shows rich and rather distinct bubble dynamics for different wall jet flow velocities and bubble-to-wall stand-off distances. The simulations use a Volume-of-Fluid method and allow to numerically determine the microscopic and transient pressures and shear stresses on the wall. It is shown that a wall jet at moderate flow velocities of a few metres per second already shapes the bubble ellipsoidally inducing a planar and convergent jet flow. The distinct bubble dynamics allow to tailor the wall interaction. In particular, the shear stresses can be increased by orders of magnitude without increasing impact pressures the same way. Interestingly, at small seeding stand-offs, the bubble during the final collapse stage can lift off the wall and migrate against the flow direction of the wall jet such that the violent collapse occurs away from the wall.

Abstract

Dark matter particles could be superheavy, provided their lifetime is much longer than the age of the universe. Using the sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to ultra-high energy neutrinos and photons, we constrain a specific extension of the Standard Model of particle physics that meets the lifetime requirement for a superheavy particle by coupling it to a sector of ultra-light sterile neutrinos. Our results show that, for a typical dark coupling constant of 0.1, the mixing angle $\theta_m$ between active and sterile neutrinos must satisfy, roughly, $\theta_m \lesssim 1.5\times 10^{-6}(M_X/10^9~\mathrm{GeV})^{-2}$ for a mass $M_X$ of the dark-matter particle between $10^8$ and $10^{11}~$GeV., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRD Letters, including Supplemental Material

Abstract

The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA), part of the Pierre Auger Observatory, is currently the largest array of radio antenna stations deployed for the detection of cosmic rays, spanning an area of $17$ km$^2$ with 153 radio stations. It detects the radio emission of extensive air showers produced by cosmic rays in the $30-80$ MHz band. Here, we report the AERA measurements of the depth of the shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$), a probe for mass composition, at cosmic-ray energies between $10^{17.5}$ to $10^{18.8}$ eV, which show agreement with earlier measurements with the fluorescence technique at the Pierre Auger Observatory. We show advancements in the method for radio $X_\text{max}$ reconstruction by comparison to dedicated sets of CORSIKA/CoREAS air-shower simulations, including steps of reconstruction-bias identification and correction, which is of particular importance for irregular or sparse radio arrays. Using the largest set of radio air-shower measurements to date, we show the radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy, reaching a resolution better than $15$ g cm$^{-2}$ at the highest energies, demonstrating that radio $X_\text{max}$ measurements are competitive with the established high-precision fluorescence technique. In addition, we developed a procedure for performing an extensive data-driven study of systematic uncertainties, including the effects of acceptance bias, reconstruction bias, and the investigation of possible residual biases. Abstract

We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence data set, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution $X_\text{max}$ measurements with even a sparse radio array. Abstract

The wind mission Aeolus of the European Space Agency was a groundbreaking achievement for Earth observation. Between 2018 and 2023, the space-borne lidar instrument ALADIN onboard the Aeolus satellite measured atmospheric wind profiles with global coverage which contributed to improving the accuracy of numerical weather prediction. The precision of the wind observations, however, declined over the course of the mission due to a progressive loss of the atmospheric backscatter signal. The analysis of the root cause was supported by the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina whose fluorescence detector registered the ultraviolet laser pulses emitted from the instrument in space, thereby offering an estimation of the laser energy at the exit of the instrument for several days in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The reconstruction of the laser beam not only allowed for an independent assessment of the Aeolus performance, but also helped to improve the accuracy in the determination of the laser beam's ground track on single pulse level. The results presented in this paper set a precedent for the monitoring of space lasers by ground-based telescopes and open new possibilities for the calibration of cosmic-ray observatories., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

In the rapidly evolving field of medical imaging, machine learning algorithms have become indispensable for enhancing diagnostic accuracy. However, the effectiveness of these algorithms is contingent upon the availability and organization of high-quality medical imaging datasets. Traditional Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data management systems are inadequate for handling the scale and complexity of data required to be facilitated in machine learning algorithms. This paper introduces an innovative data curation tool, developed as part of the Kaapana open-source toolkit, aimed at streamlining the organization, management, and processing of large-scale medical imaging datasets. The tool is specifically tailored to meet the needs of radiologists and machine learning researchers. It incorporates advanced search, auto-annotation and efficient tagging functionalities for improved data curation. Additionally, the tool facilitates quality control and review, enabling researchers to validate image and segmentation quality in large datasets. It also plays a critical role in uncovering potential biases in datasets by aggregating and visualizing metadata, which is essential for developing robust machine learning models. Furthermore, Kaapana is integrated within the Radiological Cooperative Network (RACOON), a pioneering initiative aimed at creating a comprehensive national infrastructure for the aggregation, transmission, and consolidation of radiological data across all university clinics throughout Germany. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Collaboration has embraced the concept of open access to their research data since its foundation, with the aim of giving access to the widest possible community. A gradual process of release began as early as 2007 when 1% of the cosmic-ray data was made public, along with 100% of the space-weather information. In February 2021, a portal was released containing 10% of cosmic-ray data collected from 2004 to 2018, during Phase I of the Observatory. The Portal included detailed documentation about the detection and reconstruction procedures, analysis codes that can be easily used and modified and, additionally, visualization tools. Since then the Portal has been updated and extended. In 2023, a catalog of the 100 highest-energy cosmic-ray events examined in depth has been included. A specific section dedicated to educational use has been developed with the expectation that these data will be explored by a wide and diverse community including professional and citizen-scientists, and used for educational and outreach initiatives. Abstract

Operating since 2004, the Pierre Auger Observatory has led to major advances in our understanding of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. The latest findings have revealed new insights that led to the upgrade of the Observatory, with the primary goal of obtaining information on the primary mass of the most energetic cosmic rays on a shower-by-shower basis. In the framework of the upgrade, called AugerPrime, the 1660 water-Cherenkov detectors of the surface array are equipped with plastic scintillators and radio antennas, allowing us to enhance the composition sensitivity. To accommodate new detectors and to increase experimental capabilities, the electronics is also upgraded. This includes better timing with up-to-date GPS receivers, higher sampling frequency, increased dynamic range, and more powerful local processing of the data. In this paper, the design characteristics of the new electronics and the enhanced dynamic range will be described. The manufacturing and test processes will be outlined and the test results will be discussed. The calibration of the SD detector and various performance parameters obtained from the analysis of the first commissioning data will also be presented.

Abstract

Abstract Tri-boson production together with vector-boson scattering is a privileged channel to study the electroweak structure of the Standard Model. Upcoming LHC running stages will allow to measure these processes at unprecedented accuracy and for all possible final states, which requires to push theory predictions to still unexplored frontiers. In this work we present the first calculation for the process pp → μ + μ − e+ ν ejj at the LHC in a tri-boson phase space. We evaluate the three LO contributions, namely the O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (α 6), which contains the genuine tri-boson signature, along with the O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (α s α 5) and O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ ( α s 2 $$ {\alpha}_{\textrm{s}}^2 $$ α 4), and the two O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (α 7) and O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (α s α 6) NLO corrections. The calculation is based on full Standard-Model matrix elements, including all resonant and non-resonant terms, complete spin correlations and interference effects. Integrated and differential cross sections are presented for a fiducial region inspired by High Luminosity LHC prospect studies. 38. Computing Education Pathways from High School to Community College: Key Strategies for Aligning Institutional Systems

Abstract

Background and context: High school students' interest in computing fields is not always sustained in community college due to a disconnect between institutions. Objective: To understand how cross-sector collaborations can align institutional pathways in computing. Research questions: What cross-sector practices can be used to build a computing education pathway? What practices can be used to promote student agency? How does a cross-sector partnership address issues of equity in the computing education pathway? Method: A case study of a cross-sector research-practice partnership using interviews, observations, and meeting documentation. Findings: Key strategies for aligning institutional systems to increase persistence in computing classes include building cross-sector connections and structures that support student agency, and addressing the structural factors that perpetuate inequity. Implications: The findings can inform efforts to build college and career pathways across the transition from high school to community college.

39. Amplitude modulation of acoustic waves in accelerating flows quantified using acoustic black and white hole analogues

Abstract

We investigate the amplitude modulation of acoustic waves in accelerating flows, a problem that is still not fully understood, but essential to many technical applications, ranging from medical imaging to acoustic remote sensing. The proposed modeling framework is based on a convective form of the Kuznetsov equation, which incorporates the background flow field and is solved numerically by a finite-difference method. Using acoustic black and white hole analogues as model systems, we identify a modulation of the wave amplitude, that is shown to be driven by the divergence/convergence of the acoustic wave characteristics in an accelerating/decelerating flow, and which is distinct from the convective amplification accompanying an acoustic emitter moving at a constant velocity. To rationalize the observed amplitude modulation, a leading-order model is derived from first principles, leveraging a similarity of the wave characteristics and the wave amplitude with respect to a modified Helmholtz number. This leading-order model may serve as a basis for the numerical prediction and analysis of the behavior of acoustic waves in accelerating flows, by taking advantage of the notion that any accelerating flow field can be described locally as a virtual acoustic black or white hole., Comment: The following article has been accepted by The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. 40. Efficient reduction of vertex clustering using front tracking with surface normal propagation restriction

Abstract

A significant computational expense and source of numerical errors in front tracking is the remeshing of the triangulated front, required due to distortion and compaction of the front following the Lagrangian advection of its vertices. Additionally, in classic front tracking, the remeshing of the front mesh is required not only due to the deformation of the front shape, but also because the vertices of the front are translated in the direction tangential to the front, induced by the front advection. We present the normal-only advection (NOA) front-tracking method with the aim of preventing the tangential motion of the front vertices and the associated vertex clustering, in order to reduce the number of remeshing operations required to retain a high-quality triangulated interface. To this end, we reformulate the velocity used to advect the front at each discrete front-vertex position. The proposed method is validated and tested against the classic front-tracking method, comparing volume conservation, shape preservation, computational costs, and the overall need for front remeshing, as well as experimental results for canonical interfacial flows. The presented results demonstrate that the NOA front-tracking method leads to a typical reduction of remeshing operations by 80 % or more compared to the classic front-tracking method for well-resolved cases, and results in a smoother front mesh, which is essential for an accurate representation of the geometrical properties of the front. The volume conservation error is reduced by approximately one order of magnitude with the proposed method compared to the classic front-tracking method, at a similar computational cost.

Abstract

Measuring precisely top-pair-associated processes at hadron colliders will become possible with the upcoming LHC running stages. The increased data statistics will especially enable differential measurements leading to an improved characterisation of such processes. Aiming at a consistent data-theory comparison, precise Standard-Model predictions are needed, including higher-order corrections and full off-shell effects. In this work we present NLO-accurate predictions for the production and decay of a top-antitop pair in association with a Z boson at the LHC, in the multi-lepton decay channel. The complete set of LO contributions and NLO corrections of EW and QCD origin is included. The calculation is based on full matrix elements, computed with all resonant and non-resonant contributions, complete spin correlations and interference effects. 46. Infernal and Exceptional Edge Modes: Non-Hermitian Topology Beyond the Skin Effect

Abstract

The classification of point gap topology in all local non-Hermitian symmetry classes has been recently established. However, many entries in the resulting periodic table have only been discussed in a formal setting and still lack a physical interpretation in terms of their bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we derive the edge signatures of all two-dimensional phases with intrinsic point gap topology. While in one dimension point gap topology invariably leads to the non-Hermitian skin effect, non-Hermitian boundary physics is significantly richer in two dimensions. We find two broad classes of non-Hermitian edge states: (1) Infernal points, where a skin effect occurs only at a single edge momentum, while all other edge momenta are devoid of edge states. Under semi-infinite boundary conditions, the point gap thereby closes completely, but only at a single edge momentum. (2) Non-Hermitian exceptional point dispersions, where edge states persist at all edge momenta and furnish an anomalous number of symmetry-protected exceptional points. Surprisingly, the latter class of systems allows for a finite, non-extensive number of edge states with a well defined dispersion along all generic edge terminations. Abstract Measuring vector-boson scattering beyond the fully-leptonic final state is becoming possible at the LHC, which demands to have a solid control on the theory predictions for all final states of this class of processes. In this work we present a full off-shell leading-order calculation for the process pp → ℓ + ν ℓ + 4j in two fiducial regions which are particularly relevant for its experimental measurement. In addition to the fully electroweak order, i.e. O α 6 $$ \mathcal{O}\left({\alpha}^6\right) $$ , we complement our results with O α s α 5 $$ \mathcal{O}\left({\alpha}_{\textrm{s}}{\alpha}^5\right) $$ and O α s 2 α 4 $$ \mathcal{O}\left({\alpha}_{\textrm{s}}^2{\alpha}^4\right) $$ for inclusive predictions. At O α 6 $$ \mathcal{O}\left({\alpha}^6\right) $$ we present for the first time a systematic treatment of the process in double-pole approximation and we perform a detailed study of its range of validity by considering inclusive and differential predictions compared to the full off-shell calculation.

Abstract In this work, we present the first full NLO predictions for the process pp → μ + ν μ e+ ν ejj at the LHC in a typical tri-boson phase space. The NLO corrections reach 50% at the level of the fiducial cross section and have a very different hierarchy with respect to vector-boson-scattering phase spaces. By comparing the cross section of the full off-shell process with the sum of contributing on-shell electroweak-boson production subchannels, we find that the process is dominated by WWW and WH production, while vector-boson-scattering topologies still play a non-negligible role. In addition, NLO QCD predictions matched to parton shower which are supplemented by approximate electroweak corrections are provided. For the fiducial cross section, the electroweak corrections turn out to be small but the QCD corrections reach 47%. For the inclusive cross section, matching to parton shower affects the predictions by 7%. However, for differential distributions corrections due to the parton shower can be much more sizeable, depending on the region of phase space.

Abstract

Background: Primary ureteral neoplasms are extremely rare in dogs, and ureteral involvement usually occurs owing to the invasion of renal and bladder tumors. Case Description: This case report describes a 12-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog referred to a private clinic with a six-month history of abdominal distention. A physical examination revealed mild abdominal pain. Hematological tests detected normocytic-normochromic anemia (hematocrit 33.6% [reference interval-RI: 37-55%], red blood cells 4.93 M/µL [RI: 5.5-8.5 M/µL] and hemoglobin 12.4 g/dL [RI: 12-18.0 g/dL]). The results from the leukogram, thrombogram, renal, and hepatic panels were within the reference intervals for dogs. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a cavitary mass measuring approximately 12 cm in diameter as the largest tumor in the left abdominal region over the left hepatic lobe or mesenteric site. Chest radiography did not reveal any metastasis. Therefore, the patient underwent exploratory laparotomy, during which the left ureter was found to be affected by a 12-centimeter mass that adhered to the left kidney. A unilateral left ureteronephrectomy was performed, and histology and immunohistochemistry confirmed well-differentiated primary ureteral leiomyosarcoma. The patient survived for 130 days but died of lung metastasis. Conclusion: Ureteral leiomyosarcoma should be investigated and included in the list of differential diagnoses for primary ureteral neoplasms. Regardless of the therapeutic modality, the prognosis of ureteral leiomyosarcoma may be unfavorable, as shown in this report. [Open Vet J 2024; 14(7.000): 1708-1715]
