Abstract

Truss-like shapes can occur in topology optimization described by an assembly of finite elements or its boundary represented as a polygon mesh. Such shape description does not cover a common engineering parametrization like the lines of a frame structure and its corresponding cross-section. This article addresses the truss-parametrization of such optimization using curve skeletons and Meta Balls. While the curve skeleton is common in the truss-parametrization, including Meta Balls can lead to an overall implicit and smooth shape description.

Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate the switching of the magnetization in a thin nickel film deposited on a Cu(110)-(2 × 1)O surface from out-of-plane to in-plane through the deposition of cobalt (II) phthalocyanine (CoPc) thin layers above 2.7 ML. The evolution of the magnetic properties of the CoPc/Ni system has been monitored by in situ magneto-optical spectroscopy, allowing us to follow not only the magnetic switching in real-time during deposition, but also the evolution of the optical properties of the CoPc as a function of coverage on the ferromagnetic Ni film. The observed magnetic switching is attributed to the modification of the surface magnetic anisotropy of the Ni thin film due to the adsorbed CoPc molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Attenuation, is the reduction in intensity of any flux through a medium. Rock fall attenuator systems are structures made of flexible wire netting designed reduce the intensity (kinetic energy) of rock fall and guide their trajectory. In order to evaluate the protective effect of an attenuating system and their capacity to absorb high energy impacts, high speed video recording methods have been applied to capture full scale rock rolling and attenuator barrier tests. The application of video methods requires that individual frames are scaled to the plane of the rock fall. Following this the rock fall trajectory and velocity over time can be extracted from the video. Herein, an assessment of the error in different approaches to video image scaling and position tracking for video analysis is made. Additionally the trajectories and velocity of rock falls from both un-attenuated rock rolling experiments and experiments testing the rock fall attenuator systems are analysed. A comparison of these data has allowed an assessment of the energy absorbed by the attenuator systems. Additionally, restitution coefficients for impacts on hard rock slopes have been drawn from the data, assisting in a simple model applied to estimation the attenuation effects of rock fall attenuator systems.

21. Destructive managerial leadership and psychological well-being among employees in Swedish, Polish, and Italian hotels

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this cross-sectional exploratory study was to investigate destructive managerial leadership in the hotel industry in Sweden, Poland, and Italy in relation to psychological well-being among employees. Methods and Participants: 554 questionnaires were collected from employees in all occupational groups within hotels. The Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ) measured working conditions, particularly iso-strain or high work demands combined with low control and poor social support, and psychological well-being, defined in terms of mental health, vitality, and behavioural stress. Items adapted from the Global Leadership and Organisational Behaviour Effectiveness (GLOBE) research program questionnaire measured autocratic, malevolent, and self-centred leadership styles. Differences in ratings between countries were estimated, as well as the relationship between destructive managerial leadership on an organisation level and employee psychological well-being on an individual level. The relationship between destructive leadership and psychological well-being among employees was adjusted for employees' reported iso-strain. Results: Autocratic and malevolent leadership were at the organisation level related to low vitality among employees and self-centred leadership was significantly associated with poormental health, low vitality, and high behavioural stress. Autocratic and malevolent leadership were more strongly related to iso-strain than was self-centred leadership. Variations in leadership practice between countries were seen in autocratic and malevolent leadership. Conclusion: This exploratory study suggests a significant association between destructive managerial leadership on the organisation level and poor psychological well-being among employees on an individual level. Interventions to decrease iso-strain and enhance psychological well-being among employees could be directed at an organisation level.

Abstract

The silicon 1s, 2p, and 2s, carbon 1s, and nitrogen 1s gas-phase core excitation spectra are reported for two stable divalent silylenes, Si(NRCH&dbd;CHNR) and Si(NRCH2CH2NR) (R = tBu), and for the two analogous tetravalent dihydridosilane molecules, H2Si(NRCH&dbd;CHNR) and H2Si(NRCH2CH2NR) (R = tBu). The nature of the excited states arising from one-electron core → π* and core → σ* excitations at different sites on the silylene ring are examined by relating the changes in the spectra of these compounds to differences in their molecular structure. The variations in the intensities of core → π* transitions in these spectra probe the extent of delocalization in the π-electron manifold and, thus, allow us to investigate the nature of π stabilization in heterocycles containing divalent silicon. Low-lying transitions to a π*(Si−N) level observed in all core edge spectra strongly support the existence of π-delocalization in the C&dbd;C unsaturated silylene. Ab initio calculations are used to confirm spectral assignments.
