This paper explores the governance of a state-led urban renewal project in a politically contested area in the aftermath of a major armed conflict. Building on the ethnocratic regime theory, we explore the governance of the urban renewal process in the historic district of Suriçi by focusing on the political, spatial, and governmental underpinnings of displacement and dispossession in the context of the unresolved “Kurdish Question” of Turkey. We argue that this exclusionary and state-led urban renewal project is shaped around the ethnocratic state interests with limited real estate returns that aims to sanitize and dehistoricize the historic core of Diyarbakir given its political and socioeconomic significance for the Kurdish Movement. The rhetorical formation of a “renewed” historic core epitomizes the racialized governance that intensifies the race-class realities sitting at the center of the decades-old ethnic conflict in Turkey. The central government authority's use of gentrification in practice illustrates the ethnocratic regime's spatial, political, and economic repercussions for the Kurdish population as the country's largest ethnic minority. Suriçi‘s redevelopment illustrates that ethnocratic regime practices coexist with a democratic façade and militarization activates an ethnocratic urban regime. Our findings contribute to the literature on space and power by illustrating the incompleteness and paradoxical elements of settler-colonial urbanism.

This study investigated the material characterization with the fuzzy theory of particleboards bonded by urea formaldehyde with nanofillers including nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and titanium dioxide (TiO2). The density, water absorption, thickness swelling, and mechanical tests (which included flexure and internal bonding strength tests) were considered. The fuzzy sets theory addressed the ambiguity and subjectivity of language using triangular fuzzy numbers to assess the interests of decision maker’s (DMs). The addition of nanofillers slightly decreased water absorption values due to possible good interactions between nanofillers and urea formaldehyde. Thickness swelling ranged from 0.4 to 17.5%, and water absorption ranged from 0.4 to 10.7% compared to the control sample. The physical properties of the samples were generally improved by urea formaldehyde with NFC/TiO2, and the densities of the test panels were found to be similar. The modulus of rupture of the panels with urea formaldehyde with nanofillers were under the EN 312 standard’s requirements, and the highest flexural strength and flexural modulus of elasticity were 11.1 and 1.3 GPa, respectively. Internal bond values were between 0.55 and 0.89 MPa. According to EDAS method rankings, 2C2T-8 was the best material, followed by 2C1T-8 and 2C-8. The samples coded with Control-4 and Control-8 were the lowest-performing materials.

Digital image correlation (DIC) was used to examine the strain distribution of heat-treated beech and Uludag fir woods in mechanical testing. It also evaluated the effects of the heat treatment process on the properties of the wood samples. The physical (mass/density loss, dimensional stability, color change, and surface roughness), mechanical (flexure test and compressive strength), morphological, thermal, and structural properties of the heat-treated wood were examined. It was determined that the heat treatment parameters can be optimized using the DIC method. The test results showed that although heat treatment can provide improved physical and thermal properties, it caused micro-crack formations and collapses in the wood cells. As a consequence, the mechanical properties of the heat-treated wood materials decreased with the heat treatment process. There were slight differences in the curves of the samples according to Fourier infrared and X-ray diffraction analyses. Morphological characterization showed that the heat treatment triggered large cracks in the cell wall and lumens and the morphological structure of heat-treated wood was affected at large percentages.

Effects of adding microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were evaluated relative to the mechanical, thermal, morphological, and structural properties of rigid polyurethanes (rPUs). The composites were prepared with the blending of polyols/isocyanates and the cellulosic fillers at 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1% loadings. Scanning electron microscopic images showed that the samples had micro-scaled porosity, with cell sizes ranging from 250 to 800 nm. The fillers improved the mechanical strengths and modulus of neat rPUs due to the presence of the nano-sized cells in rPUs matrix. The addition of both fillers generally did not provide a positive effect on the thermal properties, and the weight loss generally increased while the loading rate of the fillers was increased from 0.25% to 1%. The samples had two small crystalline peaks at 18° and 19° according to the X-ray diffraction analysis. From the results, it can be said that the presence of both fillers generally improved all properties of the neat rPUs, and the effects of CNC on the properties were higher than MCC due to both lower particle size and the higher crystallinity of CNC.

Road traffic pollution and industrial plant-induced pollution affect negatively the development of forest trees. How forest trees are affected by their growing environment is important for sustainable environment. The study aimed to investigate the physical, mechanical, chemical, and morphological properties of the Pinus nigra (black pine) tree which grows under different conditions. Tree samples were chosen from three different lands where were inside the forest (O), near the roadside (Y), and near the factory (F). It was studied whether there were any significant differences among the “O”, “Y” and “F” in terms of their wood properties such as physical, mechanical, chemical, and morphological. As a result, the “O” samples demonstrated more regular annual ring structure. On the other hand, it was observed that the “Y” samples had longer and wider tracheid cells. In addition, “Y” samples had better mechanical strength than “O” and “F”. Environmental pollution caused the presence of some different elements (chlorine and iron) in “Y” and “F”. As a result, it was determined that the trees growing near the roadside or near industrial plants have significant differences from forest trees which are far away from pollutions. It is possible to say that Pinus nigra (black pine) is resistant to environmental stress. For this reason, it can be recommended to use it as a barrier to reduce air pollution on the roadsides.

Wood has many uses as raw material and after being processed. Since the use of wood as raw material is limited, the interaction of physical and chemical processes with technological developments has led to new products and new areas of use. Transparent wood production, for example, has emerged to provide maximum efficiency from heat and light. In this study, sodium chlorite and deep eutectic solvents (DES) obtained from choline chloride and lactic acid were used. In the production of transparent wood, 1- and 2-mm thick beech wood veneers (Fagus orientalis L.) and two-component transparent epoxy resin were used as filler. As a result of delignification processes, the highest delignification rate was obtained with 59 % in wood samples treated with NaClO2. Transparent wood production was obtained from the samples where the most delignification took place. The adhesion of the epoxy used in the production of transparent wood in the wood cells was determined by SEM analysis. The tensile strength of the transparent wood samples increased by 31 % compared with the control samples. The study results contribute to the literature on the efficiency of different delignification methods.

Öz Vergiler kamu harcamalarının devamlılığı için önemli olmakla birlikte bireylerin ve grupların ekonomik tercihlerini etkileyici fonksiyonuna sahiptir. Mali ve sosyal açıdan etkileri değerlendirildiğinde belirli amaçlar doğrultusunda vergiler maliye politikası aracı olarak kullanılabilmektedir. Bu doğrultuda çalışmamızın konusunu oluşturan vergi harcamalarına baktığımızda bu kavram 1960’lı yılların Federal Almanya Hükümetinde ortaya çıkmaktadır. 63 yıllık bir tarihe sahip olan bu kavram zaman içerisinde literatürde ve bütçede yerini alarak ekonomik tercihleri etkileme amacıyla maliye politikası aracı olarak kullanılmaktadır. Vergi harcamaları, devletin alacağı vergilerin bir kısmı veya tamamından gönüllü vazgeçiş ile mükelleflerin vergi yükünü kısa vadede hafifletmektedir. Küresel anlamda vergi harcamaları; maliye politikası aracı olarak her ülkede sosyal ve ekonomik yapılarına göre farklı uygulanabilmektedir. Vergi harcamalarının kısa vadede ekonomik tercihleri etkilemesi, gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan ülkeler açısından farklı eğilimlere sebep olabilmektedir. Abstract Although taxes are important for the continuity of public expenditures, they have the function of influencing the economic preferences of individuals and groups. When its financial and social effects are evaluated, taxes can be used as a fiscal policy tool for certain purposes. In this direction, when we look at the tax expenditures that constitute the subject of our study, this concept emerges in the Federal German Government of the 1960s. This concept, which has a history of 63 years, has been used as a fiscal policy tool in order to influence economic preferences by taking its place in the literature and budget over time. Tax expenditures alleviate the tax burden of taxpayers in the short term by voluntarily waiving some or all of the taxes to be collected by the state. Global tax expenditures; As a fiscal policy instrument, it can be applied differently in each country according to their social and economic structures. The effect of tax expenditures on economic preferences in the short term may cause different trends for developed and developing countries. For example, the practice focused on investment and welfare increase in developed countries can be applied as a solution to income inequality in developing countries. World countries are classified according to their economic structures and market sizes. According to the MSCI Global Market Index, which is based on the study, the first classification was made for the concept of YPE in 1988. In the 1960-1970s, this grouping was created as a result of the rapidly rising risky open economies of closed economies as a result of globalization. In the study, Latin American countries with similar economic growth rates as our country are selected in the Emerging Market Economy and their comparison with our country is examined. Tax expenditures are implemented for various social and economic purposes as a result of reducing the budget but easing the tax burden on individuals. In Turkey and selected countries, it is generally implemented as an incentive to development and helping socially and economically disadvantaged individuals or groups. This study analyzed 34 canned fish products, including 28 tuna specimens, 3 salmon specimens, 1 mackerel specimen, and 1 anchovy specimen, from 13 different brands purchased in Türkiye. The study aimed to determine metal/metalloid levels in canned fish and potential health risks for both children and adult consumers. The metal/metalloid levels in the samples were determined using an Inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometer (ICP–MS), with the range of levels found as follows (mg/kg, ww): Fe (12.12–101.4), Cu (2.19–11.68), Zn (4.06–33.56), Se (0.24–10.74), Al (1.41–14.45), Cr (0.06–4.08), Pb (0.10–0.43), Cd (0.001–0.110), and As (0.01–0.13). Estimated weekly intake (EWI) levels were found that the consumption of canned fish products did not pose any risk based on the EWI levels and provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) limits. However, three tuna samples had target hazard quotient (THQ) levels above the threshold (>1). Arsenic levels were found to increase the carcinogenic risk for child consumers if they heavily consumed 18 canned fish products, including 15 tuna, 2 salmon, and 1 mackerel. The maximum allowable consumption rates (CRmm) for each canned fish product were calculated monthly. Consequently, the consumption of canned fish by children can pose health risks.

In this study, total lipid and fatty acid profiles of Barbus tauricus samples which were obtained from Melen River Basin during winter, spring, and summer seasons, were evaluated. Total lipid levels were determined 2.27%, 2.37%, and 4.34% in winter, spring, and summer, respectively. The study also determined that the carbon count of 30 fatty acids, composing total fat compositions of B. tauricus caught in Melen Basin, ranges among 12-24. The major fatty acids of B. tauricus are palmitic acid and stearic acid from SFA; palmitoleic acid, trans oleic acid, oleic acid and erucic acid from MUFA and linoleic acid, alfa linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid from PUFA. The study is the first one on lipid and fat profiles of B. tauricus, one of the species living in Duzce Melen Basin and having high economic importance, and aimed to investigate total lipid and fatty acid profiles according to the season.

Abstract Uranium is a highly radioactive heavy metal that is toxic to living things. In this study, physiological, cytogenetic, biochemical and anatomical toxicity caused by uranium and the protective role of sage (Salvia officinalis L.) leaf extract against this toxicity were investigated with the help of Allium test. Germination percentage, root length, weight gain, mitotic index (MI), micronucleus (MN) formation, chromosomal aberrations (CAs), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzyme activities, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and changes in root meristem cells were used as indicators of toxicity. In the experimental stage, a total of six groups, one of which was the control, were formed. Group I was treated with tap water, while group II and III were treated only with sage (190 mg/L and 380 mg/L). Groups IV, V and VI were germinated with uranyl acetate dihydrate (0.1 mg/mL), uranyl acetate dihydrate + 190 mg/L sage and uranyl acetate dihydrate + 380 mg/L sage, respectively. Allium cepa L. bulbs of each group were germinated for 72 h, and at the end of the period, routine preparation techniques were applied and physiological, cytogenetic, biochemical and anatomical analyzes were performed. Tribe Lithospermeae (Boraginaceae) consists of ca. 26 genera and 470 species, in which Onosma constitutes approximately one third of the species (~150). Although the tribe is strongly supported as monophyletic, both generic and species boundaries remain ambiguous. Among them, not only the phylogenetic position of Eastern Asian Onosma species, but also the taxonomic limits of the genus remain unclear. Whether Eastern Asian Onosma is monophyletic, or the genus should be widened to include Maharanga, and maybe Cystostemon, are still open questions. For these reasons, I performed 16 phylogenetic analyses with different taxon coverages, alignments, gene regions and outgroups, with up to 746 taxa of tribe Lithospermeae and with five DNA regions, using data from GenBank. The results, with the widest taxon coverage to date, show that while genus Onosma is not monophyletic in any of the analyses, the phylogenetic relationships among Onosma s.s., Eastern Asian Onosma, Maharanga and Cystostemon differ among analyses. However, the approximately unbiased (AU) test showed that the topology (((Eastern Asian Onosma+Maharanga) Cystostemon) Onosma s.s.) is overwhelmingly supported. Therefore, the current study highlights the importance of taxon, gene and outgroup sampling in Onosma phylogenetics.

Abstract Background Keel flowers are bilaterally symmetrical, pentamerous flowers with three different petal types and reproductive organs enclosed by keel petals; generally there is also connation of floral parts such as stamens and keel petals. In this study, the evolution of keel flowers within the order Fabales is explored to investigate whether the establishment of this flower type within one of the species-rich families, the Fabaceae (Leguminosae), preceded and could have influenced the evolution of keel flowers in the Polygalaceae. We conducted molecular dating, and ancestral area and ancestral state analyses for a phylogeny constructed for 678 taxa using published matK, rbcL and trnL plastid gene regions. Results We reveal the temporal and spatial origins of keel flowers and traits associated with pollinators, specifically floral symmetry, the presence or absence of a pentamerous corolla and three distinct petal types, the presence or absence of enclosed reproductive organs, androecium types, inflorescence types, inflorescence size, flower size, plant height and habit. Ancestral area reconstructions show that at the time keel flowers appeared in the Polygaleae, subfamily Papilionoideae of the Fabaceae was already distributed almost globally; at least eight clades of the Papilionoideae had keel flowers with a functional morphology broadly similar to the morphology of the first evolving Polygaleae flowers. Conclusions The multiple origins of keel flowers within angiosperms likely represent convergence due to bee specialization, and therefore pollinator pressure. In the case of the Fabales, the first evolving keel flowers of Polygaleae have a functional morphology that corresponds with keel flowers of species of the Papilionoideae already present in the environment. These findings are consistent with the keel-flowered Polygaleae exploiting pollinators of keel-flowered Papilionoideae. The current study is the first to use ancestral reconstructions of traits associated with pollination to demonstrate that the multiple evolutionary origins of the keel flower pollinator syndrome in Fabales are consistent with, though do not prove, mimicry.

The silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), an invasive alien pufferfish species that has rapidly settled throughout the Mediterranean region, poses significant threats not only to native marine species and fisheries but also to public health due to the tetrodotoxin (TTX) they harbor. In this study, TTX concentrations in L. sceleratus from Antalya Bay in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea were investigated using Q-TOF-LC-MS on a monthly basis over a one-year period. Pufferfish were caught by angling from May 2018 to April 2019. The TTX levels in three different tissues (gonads, liver, and muscle) of 110 pufferfish in total were determined in both male and female individuals caught for 11 months. The highest TTX mean levels generally occurred in the gonads and the lowest in the muscle samples. As regards the maximum TTX contents, the highest concentrations determined were 68.2, 34.2, and 7.8 µg/g in the gonad, liver, and muscle tissues, respectively. The highest levels were generally observed in late autumn to winter (especially in November and December) in all tissues from both genders. Female individuals were generally found to be more toxic than male individuals. The TTX levels found confirm that the consumption of L. sceleratus from Antalya Bay remains dangerous throughout the year, and thus L. sceleratus constantly constitutes an important risk source for public health.

The aim of this study was to investigate the properties of lignin obtained from black liquors of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and European aspen (Populus tremula L.) woods cooked by Kraft method. In the study, the cooking process was carried out according to parameters such as: 1/4 of wood/liquor ratio, cooking temperature at (170±2) °C, and cooking time of 90 min. After the cooking process, the black liquor was taken to a beaker from the digester, and lignin was recovered in different ways from the black liquor with methyl alcohol (MeOH) and ethyl alcohol (EtOH). The material properties of the recovered lignin were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Commercial lignin (cml-lignin) was used to compare the properties of lignin obtained from black liquor. SEM images showed that the particle sizes of lignin obtained with EtOH and MeOH were similar. In FT-IR, it was detected that the recovered lignin types have similar functional groups, while some differences were observed in intensities of the peaks. XRD results revealed that all lignin types were found to have a similar structure with the cml-lignin, and that alcohol types used during the recovery process of lignin do not have an important effect on the structural properties of lignin. The TGA results indicated that the thermal stability of recovered lignin has better thermal stability than cml-lignin. The results showed that the recovered lignin was similar to commercial lignin and that it can be recovered from the liquor leftover from Kraft pulping by the method described and used in industry.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fiber-reinforced composite base material on fracture resistance and fracture pattern of endodontically treated maxillary premolars restored with endocrowns using two different resin nanoceramic computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) restorative material. Methods: Forty extracted sound maxillary premolars with an occlusal reduction of 2 mm above the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) was performed following root canal treatment. Mesial interproximal box was prepared for each tooth at the margin of the CEJ and randomly distributed into four groups ( n = 10) as follows: Group A, no resin build-up in the pulp chamber; Group B, 2 mm of fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) build-up (EverX Posterior, GC).; Group C, no resin build-up in pulp chamber; Group D, 2 mm of FRC build-up. Groups A and B were prepared with resin nanoceramic (RNC) consisting ceramic nanofillers (Lava Ultimate 3 M ESPE), while Group C and D were prepared with RNC consisting ceramic nanohybrid fillers (Cerasmart GC Corp). All samples were subjected to 1,200,000 chewing cycles (1.6 Hz, 50 N) and 5000 thermal cycles (5°C–55°C) for artificial aging on a chewing simulator with thermal cycles (CSTC). Samples that survived the CSTC test without being damaged were subjected to a load-to-fracture test. Results: The highest mean fracture strength was found in Group D (936.0 ± 354.7) and lowest in Group A (684.2 ± 466.9). Fracture strength was higher in groups where FRC was used as a base material than plain restorations. However, there were no significant differences between the Lava and Cerasmart groups with and without FRC ( p > 0.05). Most of the samples were irreparably fractured under CEJ. Conclusion: Using short FRCs as a resin base material did not significantly improve fracture resistance. Cerasmart and Lava blocks had similar fracture resistance and fracture pattern.

The data presented in this paper is supporting the research article “Reconstructing an historical pollination syndrome: keel flowers” (Aygören Uluer et al., 2022). We present a dataset containing information on number of species, geographic distribution, floral type (keeled or not), presence or absence of fused petals, floral symmetry, presence or absence of a pentamerous corolla (petals+petaloid sepals in Polygalaceae), androecium type, presence or absence of enclosed reproductive organs, presence or absence of three distinct petal types (petals+ petaloid sepals in Polygalaceae), flower size, corolla size (i.e., in open flower) and/or filament size (i.e., entire filament size particularly in subfamily Caesalpinioideae), flower colour, UV reflectance, habit, height, inflorescence type and inflorescence size for 758 Fabales genera. The information was obtained from hundreds of appropriate, previously published sources. This the largest morphological dataset constructed for Fabales to date, and the data presented in this article can be used for morphology, biogeography, ancestral state, ancestral area analyses of any Fabales clades.

A young individual of Isurus oxyrinchus was caught by a commercial longline off Dana Island (Mersin Bay, northeastern Mediterranean Sea) at a depth of 72 m on May 18th 2020. Morphometric measurements of the specimen were recorded and its photographs were taken. The examined specimen is now being preserved in the Museum of Systematics at Faculty of Fisheries of Mersin University, under the reference number MEUFC-20-11-132. This occurrence of a young female specimen reported in this study is adding a new location (Mersin Bay) from the Mediterranean's Turkish waters.

In June 2018, a single female specimen of the Ocean sunfish, Mola mola (Linnaeus, 1758) (122 cm in total length and 80 kg in weight) was caught by a commercial trammel net at a depth of 393 m in Mersin Bay (Bozyazı coast), Turkey. This paper presents the first substantiated occurrence and hence, the confirmation of M. mola in the Northeastern Mediterranean, Turkey. Morphological and meristic measurements of the specimen were made and recorded with the catalog number MEUFC-18-11-101 in the Museum of the Systematic in, Mersin University’s Faculty of Fisheries. Morphometric and mer-istic data matched other recordings of this species from parts of the Mediterranean, and the histor-ical captured record of the species in the Mediterranean was documented.

The present paper reports the maximum length of the rare seen deep-sea fish bristlemouth Gonostoma denudatum Rafinesque, 1810 in the Mediterranean. One specimen of G. denudatum was caught using a trawler from the deep seas of Northern Cyprus waters on June 22th 2019. The total length (TL) of the specimen was 165 mm, the standard length (SL) was 149.5 mm, and the total weight was 16.2 g. Till today, this sample shown to this species maximum length (TL), which was recorded for the Mediterranean as well as in Eastern basin waters.

The length-weight relationships (LWRs) of fish are helpful in fisheries science. A total of 504 yellowspotted puffer (Torquigener flavimaculosus) specimens (257 female and 247 male) were caught from the Yumurtalık coast of Turkey (Eastern Mediterranean Sea) between 2018 and 2019 by using a trammel net set with a depth range between 5 and 42 m. The sex ratio was found 1:1.08 for males and females, respectively. The length-weight relationship was described for combined both sexes by the following formula W = 0.00130×L3.094 (r2 = 0.918) with a positive allometric growth. Fulton condition factor (CF) was calculated as 1.713 ± 0.145 for combined sexes. This study presents the first results available for the length-weight relationships and condition factor of T. flavimaculosus according to both sexes in the Yumurtalık coast of Turkey.

In this study, five tripletails, Lobotes surinamensis, were reported for the first time in Mersin Bay (North-eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey). . Four juveniles were observed during diving expeditions in Yeşilovacık, Mersin Bay, on 04 November 2015 and 23 September 2016, while the fifth juvenile was recorded in Ayaş/Erdemli, Mersin Bay on 26 June 2018. This report is the first observation for this location and fills an essential gap in the species' range distribution. This study is also important as it is the first visual record of juveniles in this region. This finding will be helpful for both fisheries management and conservation efforts of this species.

Bruselloz ülkemizde endemik olarak görülen bir enfeksiyon hastalığıdır. İnsan brusellozunda bir çok sistem etkilenmektedir ve çoğunlukla tanı karmaşasına neden olmaktadır. Bu nedenle, erken tanı konmuş brusellozun uygun şekilde tedavisinde uzun süreli ve kombine antibiyotik kullanımı önem taşır. Bu olgu sunumunda, ana semptomları güçsüzlük, iştahsızlık olan ve erken dönemde serolojik testleri negatif olup, daha sonra pozitifleşen 11 yaşında bir kız hastayı sunduk. Ayaktan izlemde nüks olan bu hasta üzerinden yüksek şüpheli bruselloz olgularında takibin ve tanı testlerinin tekrarının önemine dikkat çekmeyi amaçladık.

In this study, the seasonal changes on lipid content and fatty acid levels of Nemipterus randalli from the Mersin Bay have been determined. Total lipid levels were found as 3.17%, 2.12%, 0.63%, and 0.72% in spring, summer, autumn and winter seasons, respectively. The fatty acid composition of this species is composed of 30 fatty acids. Major fatty acids are palmitic acid (C16:0) and stearic acid (C18:0) from saturated fatty acids (SFAs) oleic acid (C18:1n9c) and 11-docosenoic acid (ceteloic; C22:1n11) from monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; C20: 5n3), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; C22: 6n3) from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The highest level of palmitic acid was detected in the winter season, and the palmitic acid level varied between 15.41% and 20.72% (77.79-433.30 mg/100g). The highest level of stearic acid was determined in the spring season, and its levels varied between 14.75% and 19.14%, and its levels were also determined as 77.95-483.91 mg/100g. Oleic acid from the monounsaturated fatty acids varied between 5.46% and 7.98%, and its levels were found to be 31.98-224.38 mg/100g. Ceteloic acid varied between 5.73% and 7.80%, and its levels were determined to be 33.01-161.11 mg/100g. The EPA levels from the polyunsaturated fatty acids ranged from 4.34 to 5.34%, and its levels were found to be 19.30-137.50 mg/100g. The highest levels of DHA were detected in autumn, its levels varied between 21.09% and 23.00%, and its levels have also been detected as 102.30-604.25 mg/100g. The highest levels of Σn3, Σn6 and Σn9 were found in the spring season. The levels of Σn3, Σn6 and Σn9 varied between 26.73-27.19% (122.89-751.59 mg/100g), 4.19-4.79% (18.63-134.68 mg/100g) and 5.95-9.79% (35.22-247.15 mg/100g), respectively. AI and TI values in N. randalli were found at 0.28-0.36% and 0.33-0.36%, respectively.

Gonostoma denudatum belonging to Gonostomatidae family are small fishes living in deep-sea around Atlantic and Mediterranean. They are vital species for plastic accumulation because they can be available in all depths of the water column during the day. In this study, it was aimed to present the recent record of G. denudatum, which captured from North Cyprus in May 2018. The total length of the specimen, which obtained from a depth of between 420 and 640 m, is 12.8 cm. Its photograph was taken and the catalogue number (MEUFC-19-11-108) was given. Morphometric characteristics were measured and calculated. The specimen is stored in the Museum of the Systematic, Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University.

Lantern sharks are small shark species that can be seen at depths between 70 and 2000 meters. Due to their luminescent characteristics, they have been called “Lantern shark”. In total eleven specimens of the velvet belly lantern shark, Etmopterus spinax (Linnaeus, 1758), were caught in the deep seas of Northern Cyprus by using a bottom trawl. Sampling was carried out using 13 trawling operations. The collected samples were placed in 4% formalin and stored at the Museum of the Systematic, Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University, (catalogue number: MEUFC-18-11-082). As a sampling area, the depths between 274 and 641 m were selected. Other cartilaginous fish caught during sampling except E. spinax were Galeus melastomus (1 individual), Squalus acanthias (4 individuals), Scyliorhinus canicula (85 individuals). E. spinax made up 10.89% of all cartilaginous fishes which were caught. Species identification for all fishes caught is made with the help of morphological features.

Rabbitfish (Chimaera monstrosa, Linnaeus 1758), which is a deep-sea holocephalan mostly seen between 200-1000 m in depth. The specimen of C. monstrosa was caught in the deep-seas of Northern Cyprus by a commercial bottom trawler from Turkey. The depth of sampling area is between 456 and 690 m. Species description fulfilled with the help of morphological features and metric measurements. The specimen was preserved in 4% formaldehyde and deposited in the Museum of the Systematic, Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University, (Catalogue number: MEUFC-19-11-103).

Pathogenic microorganisms have been the primary cause of foodborne disease and food poisoning throughout the world for years. The use of natural antimicrobial agents in food coating has been effective in regulating the adverse effects of pathogens in food. Increasing antimicrobial efficacy in these coatings is one of the current issues of the food industry. In the present study, the antimicrobial properties of Enteromorpha sp., which is a marine algae, and gelatin film solution incorporated with Enteromorpha sp. methanol extract have been investigated. The contents of Enteromorpha sp. methanol extract were determined by Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GCMS). The most important components in the extract were methyl palmitoleate, neophytadiene, phytol, methyl linolenate and methyl stearate. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC; the lowest concentration of test material which results in 99.9% inhibition of growth) of Enteromorpha sp. on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans were found to be between 10.79 mg/mL and 26.86 mg/mL by spectrophotometric microdilution technique. The antimicrobial effect of gelatin- Enteromorpha sp. methanolic extract film solution against the same pathogens was determined by disc diffusion method. The inhibition zone of gelatin- Enteromorpha sp. film solution was reported between 0.1 and 5.1 mm against pathogens. After a 24-h incubation, the effectiveness of the film solution was lower (1.3 mm) when compared to the extract on E. coli (5.1 mm). As a result, this study clearly showed that Enteromorpha sp. could be used as antimicrobial food coating agent, especially, in E. coli struggle.

In this study, seasonal changes in the lipid and fatty acid profiles of S. lessepsianus caught from the Mersin Bay were investigated. The total lipid levels of S. lessepsianus were found to be 2.94%, 7.19%, 2.45%, 0.83%, in spring, summer, autumn and winter season, respectively. Major fatty acids in S. lessepsianus were palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, palmitoleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in all seasons. The highest values of palmitic, palmitoleic and EPA were determined as 22.97%, 3.80% and 4.22% in spring, respectively. The highest values of stearic and oleic acid were determined as 15.93% and 7.84% in autumn, respectively. The highest value of DHA were also determined as 31.91% in winter season. The EPA level from polyunsaturated fatty acids was found in the range of 2.54-4.22% (23.09-195.62 mg/100g). The highest level of DHA were observed in the winter season and its levels changed in the range of 19.83-31.81% and was calculated as 201.29-1301.73 mg/100g. In addition, the highest level of the Σn3, Σn6, and Σn9 were calculated in the summer season as 1516.39, 114.88, 399.77 mg/100g, respectively. This report showed that fat and fatty acid profiles of S. lessepsianus are quite influenced by seasonal factors.

In this study, it was determined the chemical composition of the four ray species (Dasyatis pastinaca, Raja radula, Raja clavata and Torpedo marmorata) caught from Mersin Bay in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea. For this purpose, lipid levels, fatty acid profiles, macro-trace elements, and heavy metal levels in the liver and muscle tissues of the Mediterranean rays were investigated. Lipid levels of liver tissue of D. pastinaca, R. radula, R. clavata, T. marmorata were determined to be 80.21%, 53.73%, 45.57% and 45.26%, respectively; while lipid levels for muscle tissue were 1.62%, 1.31%, 1.20% and 1.43%, respectively. In the fatty acid composition of muscle tissues of the rays; ∑SFAs (total saturated fatty acids) levels were reported to be between 30.46% and 35.00%, ∑MUFAs (total saturated fatty acids) levels were 21.49% to 27.77%, ∑PUFAs (total polyunsaturated fatty acids) levels were 28.76% to 35.69%; while for liver tissues; ∑SFAs levels were reported to be between 25.76% and 31.15%, ∑MUFAs levels were 23.43% to 30.66%, ∑PUFAs levels were 21.86% to 30.54%. According to data of this current study, no potential toxic metals (Cr, As, Cd, Pb, Hg) were detected in the fish oils obtained from the tissues. Finally, it was showed that these fish had potential for fish oil production because of their having fat in the liver tissues and there were also no potential heavy metal in the both muscle oil and liver oil, being rather healthy.

In this study, effective microorganism (EM) was added into fermentation medium in static culture to enhance bacterial cellulose (BC) production by Acetobacter xylinum 23769 strain. According to SEM micrographs, BC pellicles from BC-Baikal EM1 show a smaller diameter and a relatively narrow diameter distribution compared to BC pellicles from Hestrin–Schramm (HS) medium. The BC-HS absorbed 90.5 times its dry weight of water. The water holding capacity increased to 132.5 for BC-Baikal EM1 medium compared to BC-HS. From the FT-IR spectra, BC samples exhibited a similar pattern. The crystalline indices of Baikal EM1-altered BC (66%) were lower than Baikal EM1-free BC (71%).

Research and development work has become a critical issue in all industries, with the intensification of global competition. It is important for the furniture industry to understand the deformation behavior of joints for durable and quality production. Optical methods in mechanical science provide quick and accurate information about solid materials without contact. In this study, the mechanical properties and deformation behaviors on different furniture joint were analyzed under bending and tensile loads using digital image correlation method (DIC). The commonly used butterfly, nailed trapeze and minifixed joining methods have been chosen for analyses in the boxed construction furniture. Medium density fiberboard (MDF), particleboard (YL) and laminar coated particleboard (LY) were used to form the furniture joints. As a result of the study, it was determined that the joint and material types affected the amount of strain and displacement. According to the results of the experiment, the highest tensile and tensile strength of the material type is given by the Fibreboard. The butterfly joint in the joint type has the best result. It has been found that the DIC method can be used as a useful tool for the optimization of joints in the furniture design.

Eighty-five specimens of the lesser spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula Linnaeus, 1758, was caught by a bottom trawl in the international waters of the Mersin Bay in May 2018. Some of the caught individuals were preserved in 4% formalin and was deposited in the Museum of the Systematic, Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University, (catalogue number: MEUFC-18-11-079). The depth of sampling area is between 274 and 641 m. A total of 13 trawling operations were carried out. The total number of caught individuals was 85 and on average 5 individuals were caught in each operation. The other cartilaginous fishes caught apart from S. canicula were Galeus melastomus (1 individual), Squalus acanthias (4 individuals), Etmopterus spinax (11 individuals) and S. canicula made up 84.16% of all cartilaginous fishes which were caught.

Two mature individuals of Trypauchen vagina were caught by trawl fishing at 30 m depth in the Mersin coastal areas in September 2018. Meristic and morphometric measurements of the individuals were done and compared with its measurements reported in other studies. In previous studies; one record from Mersin Bay and in totally three records of T. vagina in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea were reported. In this study, the second record of T. vagina was reported from Mersin Bay.

This paper presents the new occurence of the the red lionfish (Pterois volitans Linnaeus 1758). The lessepsian red lionfish Pterois volitans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Actinoptery: Scorpaeniformes: Scorpaenidae), in the native Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, living alone on the hillside and around the coral reefs and rocky bottom layers, usually at depths of 0-50 m, is an invasive species for the Mediterranean. A male specimen of the red lionfish was caught alive by a commercial trawl fishing boat in the North-Eastern Mediterranean (Yeşilovacık Bay) (36°07'32.5"N 33°36'31.6"E) on 26 March 2017. This is the third record of P. volitans from the Mediterranean Sea basin. The present short communication reported the first record of P. volitans from Yeşilovacık Bay.

A female rudderfish, Centrolophus niger (Gmelin, 1789) was caught by a trawler boat at a depth of 400 m on the shores of the Büyükeceli (Northeastern Mediterranean Sea). Its total length was 51.9 cm. This paper reports the fifth location along the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea coast of Turkey and the presence of the species in the Büyükeceli coast from the Mediterranean coast of Turkey

The concentrations of iron, copper, zinc, chromium, arsenic, cadmium and lead were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) in the muscle, gill, brain and liver tissues of lessepsian fish species sampled from Taşucu region located on the south of Turkish coastal waters in the Mediterranean Sea for all seasons. While iron showed the highest levels, cadmium showed the lowest levels in the examined tissues of all fish species (Pelates quadrilineatus, Upeneus moluccensis, Nemipterus randalli, Saurida lessepsianus). Metal levels showed tissue-dependent changes in the species studied. Cadmium was detected only in the liver tissue in all fish, in addition to a few other tissues (U. moluccensis’s brain tissues in summer season and P. quadrilineatus’s gill tissues in winter season). The maximum accumulation of Fe except for N. randalli and S. lessepsianus was detected in liver tissue. The maximum accumulation of Cu in all species was detected in liver tissue. The maximum accumulation of Zn except for S. lessepsianus was also detected in liver tissue. The highest accumulations of As and Cr in other fish species except for N. randalli were also detected in liver tissue. Except for As accumulation in N. randalli, the least accumulation for metals in all species was determined in muscle tissue. According to the seasons, there was no statistically significant relation between metal accumulations. Metal concentrations in edible parts of fish species were 17.26-108.22 µg g-1 dw for iron, 0.54-3.65 µg g-1 dw for copper, 11.50-31.17 µg g-1 dw for zinc, 0.32-1.09 µg g-1 dw for chromium, 4.32-69.44 µg g-1 dw for arsenic, below limit (not detectable) for cadmium, N.D.-1.12 µg g-1 dw for lead. In this study, for all metals except arsenic there is no health risk through an exposure of consumption of certain fish. Additionally, the results obtained for the elements in analyzed fish species were within acceptable limits for human consumption.

Background: While Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a well established treatment modality for patients with acute kidney insufficiency (AKI), it is now also being used for the management of various illnesses such as acute metabolic disorders presenting with hyperammonemia and elevated leucine levels. Herein, we aimed to describe our experience with CRRT in treatment of acute decompensation of 14 patients with a diagnosis of metabolic disorder who has been admitted to our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in the last year. Methods: Patients who have had life threatening acute metabolic crisis due to various metabolic disorders and were treated with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Between November 2014 and December 2015, 14 patients were found to have received CRRT for various metabolic disorders in the PICU. Ten patients had hyperammonemia and four patients had elevated leucine levels. Nine patients were male and five were female. The age interval was between 2 days and 18 months, with a mean of 5.5 ± 7.4 months. The weight distribution was between 2.5 and 18 kg, with a mean of 7.3 ± 5.6 kg. Eleven patients received continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF), and 3 patients with MSUD received continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD). All patients have received high throughput hemodialysis and hemofiltration. The dialyzate rate was set to be minimum 4042 ml/h/1.73 m2, and maximum 12,900 ml/h/1.73 m2. Hemofiltration was performed with a replacement rate of 40–76 ml/kg/h. The average CRRT duration was 16.6 ± 15.6 h. Conclusions: We suggest that CRRT is an efficient method that can be used in hyperammonemia and elevated leucine levels which are metabolic emergencies.

In November 2018, an individual belonging to the Sudis hyalina was caught in a trawling operation in the Büyükeceli Coast (Mersin Bay, NE Mediterranean). Morphological and meristic measurements of the specimen were made and recorded with the catalogue number of MEUFC-18-11-102 in the Museum of the Systematic, Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University.
