The work solves the classification problem for structurally stable flows, which goes back to the classical works of Andronov, Pontryagin, Leontovich and Mayer. One of important examples of such flows is so-called Morse-Smale flow, whose non-wandering set consists of a finite number of fixed points and periodic trajectories. To date, there are exhaustive classification results for Morse-Smale flows given on manifolds whose dimension does not exceed three, and a very small number of results for higher dimensions. This is explained by increasing complexity of the topological problems that arise while describing the structure of the partition of a multidimensional phase space into trajectories. In this paper authors investigate the class $G(M^n)$ of Morse-Smale flows on a closed connected orientable manifold $M^n$ whose non-wandering set consists of exactly four points: a source, a sink, and two saddles. For the case when the dimension $n$ of the supporting manifold is greater or equal than four, it is additionally assumed that one of the invariant manifolds for each saddle equilibrium state is one-dimensional. For flows from this class, authors describe the topology of the supporting manifold, estimate minimum number of heteroclinic curves, and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions of topological equivalence. Authors also describe an algorithm that constructs standard representative in each class of topological equivalence. One of the surprising results of this paper is that while for $n=3$ there is a countable set of manifolds that admit flows from class $G(M^3)$, there is only one supporting manifold (up to homeomorphism) for dimension $n>3$.

Multi-storey residential development is rapidly developing in Russian cities, both point-by-point, through the consolidation of existing buildings, and through the organization of new residential neighborhoods due to the integrated development of territories. Complex development of the territory involves the construction of not only residential buildings, but also objects of social and engineering infrastructure: kindergartens, schools, shops, sports facilities, parking lots, landscaping of yard spaces with the use of landscape architecture objects. At the same time, the architectural appearance of the development area is being worked out, and a favorable ecological and aesthetically attractive urban environment is being created [1]. However, the presence of old dilapidated buildings causes a number of problems that require a comprehensive analysis, covering the economic, social, regulatory and legal aspects to solve them. The article deals with the problems of placing social infrastructure objects in different types of urban development. It is proposed to use the territory with a dilapidated housing stock for the development of social infrastructure. Its expediency is justified.

The brain is enriched with sphingolipids, which are important membrane constituents and major lipid signaling molecules that have a role in motor and cognitive behavior. Vitamin K has been implicated in brain sphingolipid metabolism for more than 30 years. The in vitro and in vivo studies to date suggest a role of vitamin K in the regulation of multiple enzymes involved in sphingolipid metabolism within the myelin-rich regions in the brain. However, the precise mechanisms of action are not well understood. Further, the physiological consequences of the observed effects of vitamin K on sphingolipid metabolism have not been systematically studied.

Changes in biochemical and common clinical parameters of the blood were detected in patients treated with consupren (cyclosporin) as the main immunosuppressant after allogenic transplantation of the kidney. Kinetic model for evaluation of treatment adequacy was based on therapeutic drug monitoring and monitoring of blood biochemistry in recipients of the primary kidney transplant. The k1, t1/2, C0, clearance (for hemoglobin), conditioned volume of distribution (for cyclosporin) of processes of biochemical parameters (toxicity markers) stabilization within the framework of a single-part kinetic model were determined.

Previously, we showed that blueberry (BB) supplementation reversed the deleterious effects of aging on motor behavior and neuronal signaling in senescent rodents. We now report that BB-fed (from 4 months of age) APP + PS1 transgenic mice showed no deficits in Y-maze performance (at 12 months of age) with no alterations in amyloid beta burden. It appeared that the protective mechanisms are derived from BB-induced enhancement of memory-associated neuronal signaling (e.g. extracellular signal-regulated kinase) and alterations in neutral sphingomyelin-specific phospholipase C activity. Thus, our data indicate for the first time that it may be possible to overcome genetic predispositions to Alzheimer disease through diet.

Previous experiments have demonstrated that exposure to 56Fe-particle irradiation (1.5 Gy, 1 GeV) produced aging-like accelerations in neuronal and behavioral deficits. Astronauts on long-term space flights will be exposed to similar heavy-particle radiations that might have similar deleterious effects on neuronal signaling and cognitive behavior. Therefore, the present study evaluated whether radiation-induced spatial learning and memory behavioral deficits are associated with region-specific brain signaling deficits by measuring signaling molecules previously found to be essential for behavior [pre-synaptic vesicle proteins, synaptobrevin and synaptophysin, and protein kinases, calcium-dependent PRKCs (also known as PKCs) and PRKA (PRKA RIIbeta)]. The results demonstrated a significant radiation-induced increase in reference memory errors. The increases in reference memory errors were significantly negatively correlated with striatal synaptobrevin and frontal cortical synaptophysin expression. Both synaptophysin and synaptobrevin are synaptic vesicle proteins that are important in cognition. Striatal PRKA, a memory signaling molecule, was also significantly negatively correlated with reference memory errors. Overall, our findings suggest that radiation-induced pre-synaptic facilitation may contribute to some previously reported radiation-induced decrease in striatal dopamine release and for the disruption of the central dopaminergic system integrity and dopamine-mediated behavior.

The nitrone spin trap PBN has been shown to protect neuronal cells from reactive oxygen species both in culture and in vivo. As an approach to understanding the molecular mechanisms by which PBN may function to protect cells, we examined whether PBN alters the cellular response to reactive oxygen species. H(2)O(2) stimulation of PC-12 cells results in weak activation of both the ERK and JNK signal transduction pathways. PBN pretreatment of PC-12 cells, followed by H(2)O(2) stimulation, results in strong and selective activation of the pro-survival ERK pathway. H(2)O(2) induction of ERK activity in PBN-pretreated cells was shown to be dependent on extracellular Ca(+2) influx. Further analysis of the ERK pathway showed that in PBN-pretreated cells, EGF receptor and the adapter protein SHC were phosphorylated in a Ca(+2)-dependent, ligand-independent manner following H(2)O(2) stimulation. Interestingly, H(2)O(2) stimulation of PBN-pretreated cells results in only 30% of the increase in intracellular Ca(+2) as compared to untreated cells following H(2)O(2) stimulation. These data suggest a model in which PBN attenuates H(2)O(2)-induced Ca(+2) entry, yet magnifies or alters Ca(+2) action, resulting in the activation of the EGF receptor/ERK pathway.

Previously, we reported that PC12 cells showed increased vulnerability to oxidative stress (OS) induced by H2O2 (as assessed by decrements in calcium recovery, i.e., the ability of cells to buffer Ca(2+) after a depolarization event) when the membrane levels of cholesterol (CHL) and sphingomyelin (SPH) were modified to approximate those seen in the neuronal membranes of old animals. The present study was designed to examine whether the enrichment of the membranes with SPH-CHL and increased cellular vulnerability to OS are mediated by neutral SPH-specific phospholipase C (N-Sase) and the intracellular antioxidant GSH. The results showed a significant up-regulation of N-Sase activity by both low (5 microM) and high (300 microM) doses of H2O2. However, under high doses of H2O2 the up-regulation of N-Sase is accompanied by a significant increase in reactive oxygen species and by a decrease in intracellular GSH. The enrichment of membranes with SPH-CHL significantly potentiated the effects of high doses of H2O2, by further reducing the intracellular GSH and further up-regulating the N-Sase activity. Furthermore, repleting intracellular GSH with 20 mM N-acetylcysteine treatment was sufficient to attenuate the effect of a low dose of H2O2 on Ca(2+) recovery in SPH-CHL-treated cells. Thus, these results suggested that age-related alterations in the membrane SPH-CHL levels could be important determinants of the susceptibility of neuronal cells to OS.

The beta-amyloid hypothesis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) has dominated the thinking and research in this area for over a decade and a half. While there has been a great deal of effort in attempting to prove its centrality in this devastating disease, and while an enormous amount has been learned about its properties (e.g., putative toxicity, processing and signaling), Abeta has not proven to be both necessary and sufficient for the development, neurotoxicity, and cognitive deficits associated with this disease. Instead, the few treatments that are available have emerged from aging research and are primarily directed toward modification of acetylcholine levels. Clearly, it is time to rethink this position and to propose instead that future approaches should focus upon altering the age-related sensitivity of the neuronal environment to insults involving such factors as inflammation and oxidative stress. In other words "solve the problems of aging and by extension those of AD will also be reduced." This review is being submitted as a rather Lutherian attempt to "nail an alternative thesis" to the gate of the Church of the Holy Amyloid to open its doors to the idea that aging is the most pervasive element in this disease and Abeta is merely one of the planets.

Research indicates that vulnerability to oxidative stress (OSV) may increase in aging, suggesting that age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) or vascular dementia (VAD) may be superimposed upon a vulnerable neuronal environment. Determinations in cell models have suggested that the enhanced OSV may be the result of, (a) increases in membrane lipids, especially sphingomyelin and the sphingomyelin metabolite, sphingosine-1-phosphate, (b) decreases in glutathione, and (c) CNS distribution of OS-sensitive neuronal muscarinic receptor subtypes (e.g. M1, M2 and M4). These changes appear to enhance, (a) decrements in cellular calcium buffering following KCl-induced depolarization, and (b) cell death under OS conditions. Among the most effective agents that antagonized cellular OSV were the combination of polyphenolics found in fruits (e.g. blueberry extract) with high antioxidant activity. Subsequent experiments using dietary supplementation with fruit (strawberry) or vegetable (spinach) extracts have shown that such extracts are also effective in forestalling and reversing the deleterious effects of behavioral aging in F344 rats. Thus, it appears that the beneficial effects of the polyphenolics found in fruits and vegetables in neuronal aging and behavior may be similar to those seen with respect to carcinogenesis and cardiovascular disease.

Previous research showed that increasing membrane sphingomyelin (SPH) levels in rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells to the same extent as that seen in some brain regions with aging dramatically increases the vulnerability to oxidative stress (OS). These increases in vulnerability were determined by assessing deficits in the ability of these cells to extrude and/or sequester Ca2+ following 30 mM KCl-induced depolarization (recovery). The purpose of the present experiments was to discern whether increasing the levels of particular SPH metabolite(s), i.e., ceramide (Cer), sphingosine (Ssine), or sphingosine-1-phosphate (SPP), or indirectly increasing the concentrations of these metabolites with sphingomylinase (Sase), would interact with the cell's sensitivity to OS induced by low (5 microM) or high (nonlethal, 300 microM) H2O2. In addition, the OS vulnerability was examined as above under decreased SPH levels by exposing the cells to L-cycloserine (Lcc), which prevents SPH synthesis. Both Sase and SPP significantly decreased Ca2+ recovery of PC12 cells after H2O2 exposure. Conversely, Lcc-treated cells showed no further OS-induced decrements in recovery below those seen in controls. SPP significantly decreased glutathione levels (GSH) in the absence of OS. Repletion of GSH with 20 mM N-acetylcysteine significantly attenuated the effect of 5 microM H2O2 on recovery in SPP-treated cells and decreased sensitivity of SPP-treated cells to low doses of OS. Overall, our results suggest a critical role for GSH and SPP in the regulation of OS vulnerability, especially as it relates to Ca2+ homeostasis.

Ample research indicates that age-related neuronal-behavioral decrements are the result of oxidative stress that may be ameliorated by antioxidants. Our previous study had shown that rats given dietary supplements of fruit and vegetable extracts with high antioxidant activity for 8 months beginning at 6 months of age retarded age-related declines in neuronal and cognitive function. The present study showed that such supplements (strawberry, spinach, or blueberry at 14.8, 9.1, or 18.6 gm of dried aqueous extract per kilogram of diet, respectively) fed for 8 weeks to 19-month-old Fischer 344 rats were also effective in reversing age-related deficits in several neuronal and behavioral parameters including: oxotremorine enhancement of K(+)-evoked release of dopamine from striatal slices, carbachol-stimulated GTPase activity, striatal Ca(45) buffering in striatal synaptosomes, motor behavioral performance on the rod walking and accelerod tasks, and Morris water maze performance. These findings suggest that, in addition to their known beneficial effects on cancer and heart disease, phytochemicals present in antioxidant-rich foods may be beneficial in reversing the course of neuronal and behavioral aging.

Recent research has indicated that increased vulnerability to oxidative stress may be the major factor involved in CNS functional declines in aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases, and that antioxidants, e.g., vitamin E, may ameliorate or prevent these declines. Present studies examined whether long-term feeding of Fischer 344 rats, beginning when the rats were 6 months of age and continuing for 8 months, with diets supplemented with a fruit or vegetable extract identified as being high in antioxidant activity, could prevent the age-related induction of receptor-mediated signal transduction deficits that might have a behavioral component. Thus, the following parameters were examined: (1) oxotremorine-enhanced striatal dopamine release (OX-K+-ERDA), (2) cerebellar beta receptor augmentation of GABA responding, (3) striatal synaptosomal 45Ca2+ clearance, (4) carbachol-stimulated GTPase activity, and (5) Morris water maze performance. The rats were given control diets or those supplemented with strawberry extracts (SE), 9.5 gm/kg dried aqueous extract (DAE), spinach (SPN 6.4 gm/kg DAE), or vitamin E (500 IU/kg). Results indicated that SPN-fed rats demonstrated the greatest retardation of age-effects on all parameters except GTPase activity, on which SE had the greatest effect, whereas SE and vitamin E showed significant but equal protection against these age-induced deficits on the other parameters. For example, OX-K+-ERDA enhancement was four times greater in the SPN group than in controls. Thus, phytochemicals present in antioxidant-rich foods such as spinach may be beneficial in retarding functional age-related CNS and cognitive behavioral deficits and, perhaps, may have some benefit in neurodegenerative disease.

Previous research has suggested that age-related decline in physiological functions may be the result of substantial alterations in membrane molecular structure. The purpose of the present experiments was to elucidate the role of cholesterol domains in the age-related decline in receptor-G-protein interactions in striatal synaptosomes. We observed a significant age-related deficit in muscarinic cholinergic stimulated Low-Km GTPase activity and its age-related susceptibility to cholesterol treatment in range of 10(-10)-10(-5) M. Treatment of synaptosomes from old rats with cholesterol in range of 10(-8)-10(-6) M restored the Low-Km GTPase activity up to the level seen in young animals and reached a maximum at 10(-7) M. In synaptosomes from young rats, however, cholesterol treatment did not have any effect on striatal Low-Km GTPase activity. We observed significant alterations in the membrane lipid composition of striatal synaptosomes as a function of age. Our results suggested a significant interaction of age and cholesterol treatment on physical properties of striatal synaptosomes. Thus, the present results of experiments in vitro support our previous results of experiments in vivo and suggested an interaction of cholesterol domains with muscarinic-cholinergic receptor G-protein alpha subunit coupling/uncoupling through regulation of physical properties of striatal synaptosomes.

In a model recently developed to study the parameters altering vulnerability to oxidative stress, it was shown via image analysis that H2O2-exposed PC12 cells exhibited increased levels of intracellular Ca2+ (baseline), decreases in K+-stimulated Ca2+ levels (peak), and decreased poststimulation Ca2+ clearance (recovery). The present experiments were performed to determine if the response patterns in these parameters to oxidative stress would be altered after modification of membrane lipid composition induced by incubating the PC12 cells with 660 microM cholesterol (CHL) in the presence or absence of 500 microM sphingomyelin (SPH) before low (5 microM) or high (300 microM) H2O2 exposure. Neither CHL nor SPH had synergistic effects with high concentrations of H2O2 on baseline. However, CHL in the presence or absence of SPH reversed the effect of low concentrations of H2O2 on baseline. SPH decreased significantly the cell's ability to clear excess Ca2+ in the presence or absence of H2O2 and increased significantly the level of conjugated dienes (CDs). It is surprising that in the cells pretreated with CHL, the CD levels were not significantly different from controls. However, in the presence of SPH, the effects of CHL on CDs were altered. These results suggest that the ratios of membrane lipids could be of critical importance in determining the vulnerability to oxidative stress and Ca2+ translocation in membranes. This may be of critical importance in aging where there is increased membrane SPH and significant loss of calcium homeostasis.

Administration of buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) selectively inhibits glutathione (GSH) biosynthesis, thereby inducing a GSH deficiency. Because GSH plays a critical role in intracellular antioxidant defense, decreased GSH levels in the brain may result in less oxidative stress (OS) protection. Thus, the pro-oxidant effects of dopamine (DA), which rapidly oxidizes to form reactive oxygen species, may increase. In this study, the behavioral consequences of reduced OS protection were examined by administering BSO (3.2 mg in 30 microl Ringer's solution, intracerebroventricularly) every other day for 12 d to male Fischer 344 rats. In addition, DA (15 microl of 500 microM) was administered every day; when given on the same day as BSO, it was either 1 h after BSO (BSO + DA group) or 1 h before BSO (DA + BSO group). Tests of psychomotor behavior--rod walking, wire suspension, and plank walking--were performed five times during the experiment. BSO + DA administration, but not DA + BSO, impaired performance by decreasing latency to fall in the rod and plank walk tests compared to a vehicle only (Ringer's) group. Therefore, depletion of GSH with BSO, followed by DA treatment, produced deficits in psychomotor behavior. These deficits are similar to those seen in aged rats, suggesting that the oxidation of DA coupled with a reduced capacity to respond to OS may be responsible for the induction of age-related motor behavioral deficits.

Previous research from several laboratories has indicated that cholesterol (CHO) accumulates in neuronal membranes and alters their structural and signal transduction (ST) properties during aging. The possible reasons for these increases in membrane CHO have not been specified. However, present findings suggest that such accumulation may actually serve to protect neuronal tissue from oxidative damage. Striatal slices (6, 24 month rats) were preincubated in 1 mM CHO (30 min) followed by incubation with H2O2 (10 microM, 30 min). The slices were then either superfused with 30 mM KCl in the presence or absence of 500 microM oxotremorine (Ox), and K(+)-evoked dopamine release (K(+)-ERDA) examined or assessed for carbachol-stimulated low K(m) GTPase activity. The results indicated that CHO incubation prior to H2O2 in either age group was effective in preventing H2O2 reductions in both non-Ox-enhanced K(+)-ERDA and Ox conditions, as well as sodium nitroprusside (SNP 150 microM)-induced decreases in K(+)-ERDA. In addition, H2O2-induced deficits in carbachol-stimulated low K(m) GTPase activity were reduced in the striatal tissue from the old animals pretreated with CHO. However, if the slices were incubated in H2O2 prior to CHO exposure, CHO enhanced the H2O2 effects in the tissue from the old animals. Thus, depending upon the order of exposure, CHO functioned to enhance or retard the effects of oxidative stress, in an age-dependent manner.

In order to determine whether age-related changes in neuronal membrane structure contribute to previously reported changes in muscarinic cholinergic signal transduction, striata from 3, 13 and 23 month old F344 male rats were examined for both carbachol-stimulated low Km GTPase activity and membrane one-dimensional electron density profile using small angle X-ray diffraction. Increasing age was associated with both a reduction in stimulated GTPase activity and a decrease in membrane bilayer width. These findings suggest the possibility that fundamental membrane structural changes may contribute to alterations in signal transduction seen with aging.

The age related decrease in alpha 1-adrenergic stimulated inositol 1, 4, 5 trisphosphate (IP3) production in parotid cells of aged rats can be partially restored by treatment with S-adenosylmethionine (SAM). This effect is completely blocked by S-adenosyl homocysteine (SAH) and occurs in association with an increase in the conversion of phosphatidylethanolamine to phosphatidylcholine and a decrease in membrane viscosity. In contrast, SAM treatment actually inhibits stimulated IP3 production in cells of young rats. The membrane viscosity of these cells is lower than that of those from aged rats. Although conversion of phosphatidylethanolamine to phosphatidylcholine is enhanced, no further decrease in membrane viscosity is elicited in young cell preparations. These findings suggest that age changes in the membrane environment may result in impaired alpha 1-adrenergic signal transduction and that such alterations may be at least partially reversible by SAM treatment.

There is evidence that dietary lipids and age both influence neuronal membrane composition and receptor G protein-linked signal transduction, but very little information is available on the interaction between these two factors. To investigate this, we obtained striata from 2, 12, and 22-month-old male F344 rats who were fed either a high-cholesterol, high-saturated fat or low-fat diet for 1 month. The striata were assayed for muscarinic agonist-stimulated low-Km GTPase activity using 10(-3) M carbachol and 10(-5) M oxotremorine and for KCl-evoked dopamine release enhancement by 10(-5) M oxotremorine. Membrane cholesterol and phospholipid content and phospholipid class composition were also determined. Mature animals showed significant but divergent changes in GTPase activity and dopamine release for high-cholesterol and low-fat diets: GTPase activity decreased, whereas dopamine release increased in these groups. Alterations in GTPase activity but not in dopamine release were inversely correlated with the cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio. Old control animals showed reductions in both GTPase activity and oxotremorine-enhanced dopamine release compared with young animals. Whereas none of the experimental diets affected GTPase activity in old animals, the low-fat diet produced a marked decrease in dopamine release. In contrast to mature and old groups, young rats showed no significant change in either GTPase or dopamine release, suggesting a relative "resistance" to such dietary lipid modulation. The observed dissociation in GTPase and dopamine release responses to diet may reflect differing effects of these diets on discrete membrane lipid domains that preferentially influence different signal transduction components. The substantial age-related differences in striatal membrane response to dietary lipid modulation may represent the effects of underlying age differences in membrane lipid metabolism, structure, and/or dynamics. Our findings support the work of other groups that have shown that brain membranes are susceptible to modification by exogenous lipids. They also suggest the need for a more systematic examination of the influence of age on the response to other types of dietary lipid changes.

Under conditions of adaptation to heating lipid composition in mitochondrial membranes of rat inner tissues was altered as follows: an increase in relative concentration of plasmalogenous forms of phospholipids (kidney, heart) and in content of saturated fatty acids (liver tissue), a decrease in the index of fatty acids unsaturation and in the ratio of fatty acids omega-3/omega-6. The alterations observed enabled the membranes to keep sufficient amount of liquidity essential for functional activity of mitochondria in heating.

1. Fatty acid composition of five main phospholipids of vertebrate brain myelin and synaptosomal proteolipids and membranes was studied. 2. Higher content of monoenoic and lower content of saturated and polyenoic fatty acids was found to be characteristic of phospholipids from myelin and myelin proteolipids as compared to phospholipids from synaptosomal proteolipids and membranes of vertebrates (from fishes to mammalians). Fatty acid composition of phospholipids of proteolipid complexes and of the membranes, from which they were isolated, were found to be similar in various species studied. 3. Microviscosity was found to be higher in myelin as compared to synaptosomal membranes of frog Rana temporaria and in rabbit Lepus cuniculus. It appears to be due to the difference in proteolipid content and in lipid composition of myelin and synaptosomal membranes.

The influence of a number of gangliosides and sialic acid on the adhesive interaction of meningococci and human cells have been studied. Sialic acid has been found to produce no influence on adhesion, and the preliminary treatment of meningococci with gangliosides or their preparations suppresses the capacity of meningococci for attachment to epithelial cells and erythrocytes. At the same time the degree of the inhibition of adhesion depends on the kind and concentration of gangliosides. On the contrary, after the treatment of target cells with gangliosides (1.25 micrograms/ml) the adhesion indices of meningococci with respect to these cells increase 5- to 8-fold. These data are indicative of the participation of gangliosides in the adhesive interaction of meningococci and human cells.

An analysis was made of the potentialities and efficacy of the treatment of adolescents suffering from duodenal ulcer under outpatient conditions. 65 patients aged 14 to 18 years with duodenal ulcer in the stage of clinical exacerbation and with the presence of ulcer in the acute phase were placed under observation. Outpatient treatment appeared effective in 83.3% of patients. The time of ulcer healing under out- and inpatient conditions was 21.5 +/- 2.5 and 23.5 +/- 3.1 days, respectively. Therefore, selection of adolescent patients with duodenal ulcer for outpatient treatment requires a strictly differentiated approach depending on the disease stage and the character of macroscopic changes in the gastric and duodenal mucosae. At the same time it is necessary to take into consideration the rate and accuracy of removing the painful and dyspeptic syndromes, the lack of complications, consent and interest on the part of adolescents and their parents.

The phospholipid composition of the main proteolipid complexes of the nervous system was studied in myelin and synaptosomal membranes from brains of representatives of various vertebrate classes. 2. The relative content of acid phospholipids was much higher in proteolipid complexes from myelin and synaptosomal membranes of all vertebrates studied as compared to their content in the initial lipid extract (28-80% and 11-20% of total phospholipid content, respectively). 3. The relative content of acid phospholipids in proteolipid complexes of myelin membranes was much lower in brain of fishes and amphibia as compared to higher vertebrates. 4. The main acid phospholipids of proteolipid complexes was phosphatidylserine, phosphatidic acid being characteristic for myelin proteolipids and diphosphatidyl glycerol for synaptosomal proteolipids of all vertebrates studied.

Studies were made of the ability of alpha-tocopherol, incorporated into unilamellar liposomes from saturated or unsaturated phospholipids (donor liposomes) to inhibit the accumulation of lipid peroxidation (LPO) products in unilamellar liposomes from rat cerebral cortex lipids (acceptor liposomes) in the presence of LPO inducer (Fe + ascorbate). With the molar alpha-tocopherol: phospholipids rations from 1:1000 to 1:100 in donor liposomes, obtained through sonication of lipid dispersions, alpha-tocopherol was incorporated into both monolayers of liposomes and was distributed in monomeric form without forming clusters. Based on the dependencies of LPO inhibition on the alpha-tocopherol concentrations, we chose the ones that completely prevented the accumulation of LPO products in donor liposomes. Under these conditions LPO inhibition in mixtures of donor and acceptors liposomes was fully determined by the antioxidant effect of alpha-tocopherol in acceptor liposomes due to its intermembrane transfer. The efficiency of the "intermembrane" antioxidant action of alpha-tocopherol increased in the course of preincubation of donor and acceptor liposomes (up to 60 min) and this increase was more pronounced when the donor liposomes contained unsaturated phospholipids. Evidence was obtained that the intermembrane transfer of alpha-tocopherol did not result from the fusion of donor and acceptor liposomes during preincubation.

Proteolipid complex of Folch-Lees has been obtained and purified from the myelin and synaptosomes of the brain of the frog Rana temporaria and hen Gallus domesticus. Relative content of this proteolipid and glycolipids in the myelin is almost twice higher, whereas that of phospholipids--1 1/2 times lower than in the synaptosomal membranes of the same animal. Protein content of this complex is higher for myelin than for synaptosomal membranes; opposite relation was found with respect to phospholipid content. Within this complex, lipids are presented mainly by phospholipids, especially by acid ones which amount to 30-60%. Proteolipid complexes fro the myelin and synaptosomes differ from each other by their lipid component. Myelin proteolipid complex contains mainly phosphatidylserine and phosphatid acid, whereas synaptosomal one--phosphatidylserine and diphosphatediglycerol. No significant differences were found in fatty acid composition of phospholipids from proteolipid complex from myelin and synaptosomes as compared to this composition in the initial membranes.
