Photoexcited molecular trajectories on potential energy surfaces (PESs) prior to thermalization are intimately connected to the photochemical reaction outcome. The excited-state trajectories of a diplatinum complex featuring photo-activated metal–metal σ-bond formation and associated Pt−Pt stretching motions were detected in real time using femtosecond wide-angle X-ray solution scattering. The observed motions correspond well with coherent vibrational wavepacket motions detected by femtosecond optical transient absorption. Two key coordinates for intersystem crossing have been identified, the Pt−Pt bond length and the orientation of the ligands coordinated with the platinum centers, along which the excited-state trajectories can be projected onto the calculated PESs of the excited states. This investigation has gleaned novel insight into electronic transitions occurring on the time scales of vibrational motions measured in real time, revealing ultrafast nonadiabatic or non-equilibrium processes along excited-state trajectories involving multiple excited-state PESs.

The Trp-cage miniprotein is one of the smallest systems to exhibit a stable secondary structure and fast-folding dynamics, serving as an apt model system to study transient intermediates with both experimental and computational analyses. Previous spectroscopic characterizations that have been done on Trp-cage have inferred a single stable intermediate on a pathway from folded to unfolded basins. We aim to bridge the understanding of Trp-cage structural folding dynamics on microsecond-time scales, by utilizing time-resolved X-ray solution scattering to probe the temperature-induced unfolding pathway. Our results indicate the formation of a conformationally extended intermediate on the time scale of 1 μs, which undergoes complete unfolding within 5 μs. We further investigated the atomistic structural details of the unfolding pathway using a genetic algorithm to generate ensemble model fits to the scattering profiles. This analysis paves the way for direct benchmarking of theoretical models of protein folding ensembles produced with molecular dynamics simulations.

Charge density waves (CDWs) with superconductivity, competing Fermi surface instabilities, and collective orders have captured much interest in two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials. Understanding the CDW suppression mechanism, its connection to the emerging superconducting state, and electronic correlations provides opportunities for engineering the electronic properties of vdW heterostructures and thin-film devices. Using a combination of the thermal transport, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, Raman measurements, and first-principles calculations, we observe an increase in electronic correlations of the conducting states as the CDW is suppressed in ZrTe3 with 5% Cu and Ni intercalation in the vdW gap. As superconductivity emerges, intercalation brings not only decoupling of quasi-one-dimensional conduction electrons with phonons as a consequence of intercalation-induced lattice expansion but also a drastic increase in Zr2+ at the expense of Zr4+ metal atoms. These observations not only demonstrate the potential of atomic intercalates in the vdW gap for ground-state tuning but also illustrate the crucial role of the Zr metal valence in the formation of collective electronic orders.

Understanding and controlling the physical and chemical processes at molten salt‐alloy interfaces is vital for molten‐salt nuclear reactors. Corrosion processes in molten salts are highly dependent on the redox potential of the solution that changes with the addition of fission and corrosion products. Therefore, reactor designers develop online electrochemical methods of salt monitoring. But electrochemical spectroscopy relies on the deconvolution of broad peaks, a process that may be imprecise in the presence of multiple species in the solution. Here, we describe our developments towards monitoring the concentration and the chemical state of corrosion products in the melt by a combination of electrochemistry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We placed NiCr foil in molten FLiNaK and found the presence of both Ni2+ ions and metallic Ni in the melt, which we attribute to the disintegration of the corroding foil due to Cr dealloying. Although extremely challenging, spectroelectrochemical measurements add a promising rich new data stream for online salt monitoring.

To examine ion solvation, exchange, and speciation for minority components in molten salts (MS) typically found as corrosion products, we propose a multimodal approach combining extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, and rate theory of ion exchange. Going beyond conventional EXAFS analysis, our method can accurately quantify populations of different coordination states of ions with highly disordered coordination environments via linear combination fitting of the EXAFS spectra of these coordination states computed from AIMD to the experimental EXAFS spectrum. In a case study of dilute Ni(II) dissolved in the ZnCl2+KCl melts, our method reveals heterogeneous distributions of coordination states of Ni(II) that are sensitive to variations in temperature and melt composition. These results are fully explained by the difference in the chloride exchange dynamics at varied temperatures and melt compositions. This insight will enable a better understanding and control of ion solubility and transport in MS.

Two-dimensional transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTC's) feature covalently bonded metal-chalcogen layers separated by the van der Waals (vdW) gap. Similar to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), TMTCs often host charge density waves (CDWs) and superconductivity but unlike TMDCs atomic chains in the crystal structure give rise to quasi one-dimensional (quasi 1D) conduction. ZrTe$_3$ features CDW below $T_{\textrm{CDW}}$ = 63 K and filamentary superconductivity below 2 K that can be enhanced by pressure or chemical substitution. Here we report the presence of mixed valent Zr$^{2+}$ and Zr$^{4+}$ atoms in ZrTe$_3$ crystals that is reduced by doping in ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ and Zr$_{1-y}$Hf$_y$Te$_3$. Superconductivity is enhanced via disorder in Te2-Te3 atomic chains that are associated with CDW formation. Hf substitution on Zr atomic site enhances $T_{\textrm{CDW}}$ due to unperturbed Te2-Te3 chain periodicity and enhanced electron-phonon coupling. Weak electronic correlations in ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ are likely governed by the lattice contraction effects.

A critical technological roadblock to the widespread adoption of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells is the development of highly active and durable platinum-based catalysts for accelerating the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction, which has largely relied on anecdotal discoveries so far. While the oxygen binding energy ∆E₀ has been frequently used as a theoretical descriptor for predicting the activity, there is no known descriptor for predicting durability. Here we developed a binary experimental descriptor that captures both the strain and Pt transition metal coupling contributions through X-ray absorption spectroscopy and directly correlated the binary experimental descriptor with the calculated ∆EO of the catalyst surface. This leads to an experimentally validated Sabatier plot to predict both the catalytic activity and stability for a wide range of Pt-alloy oxygen reduction reaction catalysts. Based on the binary experimental descriptor, we further designed an oxygen reduction reaction catalyst wherein high activity and stability are simultaneously achieved.

The use of molten salts for large-scale solar concentrated power plants and molten salt reactors has been driving the research to better understand how metals and alloys interact with the molten salt. As the metals may undergo morphological, chemical, and structural change in molten salt environments, it is critical to understand the fundamental mechanisms in these changes. In this work, we will present how we utilized synchrotron X-ray nano-tomography to better understand the 3D morphological evolution of Ni, Cr, and their alloys in molten salt. The effects of temperature and additives in the salt on the morphological evolution will be discussed. At the higher temperature, a characteristic bicontinuous structure can form from molten salt dealloying a binary alloy. [1] This contrasts to the intergranular corrosion found in the same system reacted at a lower temperature. [2] Different additives in the salt were also found to alter the morphological changes of the alloys and can create planar corrosion, percolation dealloying, or redeposition. To complement the morphological studies by X-ray nano-tomography, a suite of X-ray and electron microscopy analyses were also carried out to better understand the chemical and structural (both short-and long-range ordering) evolution. Taking it as a multimodal approach, we will discuss how we couple the analysis from synchrotron operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, diffraction, and imaging, as well as the multiscale imaging studies from both X-ray and electron microscopy. Many biomaterials can adapt to changes in the local biological environment (such as pH, temperature, or ionic composition) in order to regulate function or deliver a payload. Such adaptation to environmental perturbation is typically a hierarchical process that begins with a response at a local structural level and then propagates to supramolecular and macromolecular scales. Understanding fast structural dynamics that occur upon perturbation is important for rational design of functional biomaterials. However, few nanosecond time-resolved methods can probe both intra- and intermolecular scales simultaneously with a high structural resolution. Here, we utilize time-resolved X-ray scattering to probe nanosecond to microsecond structural dynamics of poly-l-glutamic acid undergoing protonation via a pH jump initiated by photoexcitation of a photoacid. Our results provide insights into the protonation-induced hierarchical changes in packing of peptide chains, formation of a helical structure, and the associated collapse of the peptide chain.

Cytochrome c (cyt c) has long been utilized as a model system to study metalloprotein folding dynamics and the interplay between active site ligation and tertiary structure. However, recent reports regarding the weakness of the native Fe(II)–S bond (Fe–Met80) call into question the role of the active site ligation in the protein folding process. In order to investigate the interplay between protein conformation and active site structures, we directly tracked the evolution of both during a photolysis-induced folding reaction using X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy and time-resolved X-ray solution scattering techniques. We observe an intermediate Fe–Met80 species appearing on ∼2 μs timescale, which should not be sustained without stabilization from the folded protein structure. We also observe the appearance of a new active site intermediate: a weakly interacting Fe–H2O state. As both intermediates require stabilization of weak metal–ligand interactions, we surmise the existence of a local structure within the unfolded protein that protects and limits the movement of the ligands, similar to the entatic state found in the native cyt c fold. Furthermore, we observe that in some of the unfolded ensemble, the local stabilizing structure is lost, leading to expansion of the unfolded protein structure and misligation to His26/His33 residues.

In the past few decades, prediction of macromolecular structures beyond the native conformation has been aided by the development of molecular dynamics (MD) protocols aimed at exploration of the energetic landscape of proteins. Yet, the computed structures do not always agree with experimental observables, calling for further development of the MD strategies to bring the computations and experiments closer together. Here, we report a scalable, efficient MD simulation approach that incorporates an x-ray solution scattering signal as a driving force for the conformational search of stable structural configurations outside of the native basin. We further demonstrate the importance of inclusion of the hydration layer effect for a precise description of the processes involving large changes in the solvent exposed area, such as unfolding. Utilization of the graphics processing unit allows for an efficient all-atom calculation of scattering patterns on-the-fly, even for large biomolecules, resulting in a speed-up of the calculation of the associated driving force. The utility of the methodology is demonstrated on two model protein systems, the structural transition of lysine-, arginine-, ornithine-binding protein and the folding of deca-alanine. We discuss how the present approach will aid in the interpretation of dynamical scattering experiments on protein folding and association.

The structural dynamics of insulin hexamer dissociation were studied by the photoinduced temperature jump technique and monitored by time-resolved X-ray scattering. The process of hexamer dissociation was found to involve several transient intermediates, including an expanded hexamer and an unstable tetramer. Our findings provide insights into the mechanisms of protien-protein association.

Direct tracking of protein structural dynamics during folding-unfolding processes is important for understanding the roles of hierarchic structural factors in the formation of functional proteins. Using cytochrome c (cyt c) as a platform, we investigated its structural dynamics during folding processes triggered by local environmental changes (i.e., pH or heme iron center oxidation/spin/ligation states) with time-resolved X-ray solution scattering measurements. Starting from partially unfolded cyt c, a sudden pH drop initiated by light excitation of a photoacid caused a structural contraction in microseconds, followed by active site restructuring and unfolding in milliseconds. In contrast, the reduction of iron in the heme via photoinduced electron transfer did not affect conformational stability at short timescales (1 ms), despite active site coordination geometry changes. These results demonstrate how different environmental perturbations can change the nature of interaction between the active site and protein conformation, even within the same metalloprotein, which will subsequently affect the folding structural dynamics.

The utilization of CO2 as a C1 feedstock for synthesis of value-added chemicals and fuels could both mitigate the negative effects associated with increasing CO2 emissions and decrease dependence on fossil fuels as part of a future circular carbon economy. Co-based catalysts have been well-developed for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), but replacing the CO reactant with CO2 (CO2-FTS) typically results in low selectivity toward desirable light olefins. To better understand the structure-property relationships of Co-based catalysts, and extend promising FTS results to CO2-FTS, we have studied the effect of a potassium promoter and acidic properties of ZSM-5 on catalytic performance. The selectivity of FTS and CO2-FTS is shown to be a strong function of Si/Al ratio in co-impregnated catalysts, with findings supported by in situ XAFS and FTIR, demonstrating light olefin selectivity can be tuned by Si/Al ratio and the method of introducing the K promoter.

Biological functions frequently require protein–protein interactions that involve secondary and tertiary structural perturbation. Here we study protein–protein dissociation and reassociation dynamics in insulin, a model system for protein oligomerization. Insulin dimer dissociation into monomers was induced by a nanosecond temperature-jump (T-jump) of ~8 °C in aqueous solution, and the resulting protein and solvent dynamics were tracked by time-resolved X-ray solution scattering (TRXSS) on time scales of 10 ns to 100 ms. The protein scattering signals revealed the formation of five distinguishable transient species during the association process that deviate from simple two-state kinetics. Our results show that the combination of T-jump pump coupled to TRXSS probe allows for direct tracking of structural dynamics in nonphotoactive proteins.

The protein folding process often proceeds through partially folded transient states. Therefore, a structural understanding of these disordered states is crucial for developing mechanistic models of the folding process. Characterization of unfolded states remains challenging due to their disordered nature, and incorporating multiple methods is necessary. Combining the time-resolved x-ray solution scattering (TRXSS) signal with molecular dynamics (MD), we are able to characterize transient partially folded states of bovine α-lactalbumin, a model system widely used for investigation of molten globule states, during its unfolding triggered by a temperature jump. We track the unfolding process between 20 µs and 70 ms and demonstrate that it passes through three distinct kinetic states. The scattering signals associated with these transient species are then analyzed with TRXSS constrained MD simulations to produce protein structures that are compatible with the input signals. Without utilizing any experimentally extracted kinetic information, the constrained MD simulation successfully drove the protein to an intermediate molten globule state; signals for two later disordered states are refined to terminal unfolded states. From our examination of the structural characteristics of these disordered states, we discuss the implications disordered states have on the folding process, especially on the folding pathway. Finally, we discuss the potential applications and limitations of this method.

The crystal and local structures of compounds formed in the Dy2O3–HfO2 system (at molar ratios from 1: 3 to 3: 1) in the course of isothermal annealing of X-ray amorphous mixed hydroxides at temperatures up to 1600°C have been studied. At the molar ratio Dy2O3: HfO2 from 1: 3 to 1: 1, crystallization leads to formation of single-phase defect fluorite solid solutions nDy2O3 ∙ mHfO2 with clearly pronounced nonequivalence of parameters of local environment of Dy3+ and Hf4+ cations. It has been found that Dy2H2O7 (Dy2O3: HfO2 = 1: 2) samples have a tendency to pyrochlore-type ordering in both the cationic and anionic sublattices.

Recent years have seen the development of new iron-centered N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes for solar energy applications. Compared to typical ligand systems, the NHC ligands provide Fe complexes with longer-lived metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) states. This increased lifetime is ascribed to strong ligand field splitting provided by the NHC ligands that raises the energy levels of the metal centered (MC) states and therefore reduces the deactivation efficiency of MLCT states. Among currently known NHC systems, [Fe(btbip)2]2+ (btbip = 2,6-bis(3-tert-butyl-imidazol-1-ylidene)pyridine) is a unique complex as it exhibits a short-lived MC state with a lifetime on the scale of a few hundreds of picoseconds. Hence, this complex allows for a detailed investigation, using 100 ps X-ray pulses from a synchrotron, of strong ligand field effects on the intermediate MC state in an NHC complex. Here, we use time-resolved wide angle X-ray scattering (TRWAXS) aided by density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the molecular structure, energetics and lifetime of the high-energy MC state in the Fe-NHC complex [Fe(btbip)2]2+ after excitation to the MLCT manifold. We identify it as a 260 ps metal-centered quintet (5MC) state, and we refine the molecular structure of the excited-state complex verifying the DFT results. Using information about the hydrodynamic state of the solvent, we also determine, for the first time, the energy of the 5MC state as 0.75 + 0.15 eV. Our results demonstrate that due to the increased ligand field strength caused by NHC ligands, upon transition from the ground state to the 5MC state, the metal to ligand bonds extend by unusually large values: by 0.29 angstrom in the axial and 0.21 angstrom in the equatorial direction. These results imply that the transition in the photochemical properties from typical Fe complexes to novel NHC compounds is manifested not only in the destabilization of the MC states, but also in structural distortion of these states.

In this work, we present a detailed investigation on the recombination dynamics of mercury halides HgX2 (X = I, Br) in acetonitrile solution after UV-induced photodissociation. The study is performed by combining time-resolved wide-angle x-ray scattering (TRWAXS) and optical transient absorption spectroscopy. Up to 68% of the UV (266 nm) photodissociated HgX and X radicals that escape the solvent cage surrounding parent HgX2 recombine within a nanosecond after photodissociation. In contrast to classical primary geminate recombination, occurring on much faster time scales, we interpret the sub-nanosecond recombination channel as secondary geminate recombination (SGR), also referred to as diffusion-limited geminate recombination. The family of triatomic mercury halides therefore represents an important class of molecules to study chemical mechanisms of solvent-dependent SGR by TRWAXS. A combination of modern locally sensitive methods of structure analysis based on the interaction of synchrotron radiation with condensed matter was used to study the formation and evolution of crystal structures, change in the size of crystallites, the type and degree of cationic ordering, and features of the local atomic structures of compounds Ln2Hf2O7 (Ln = Gd, Dy) prepared by heat treatment of X-ray amorphous precursors.

The intermetallic phase Ce 2 RuAl was synthesized by arc melting the elemental components and subsequent annealing of the product at 823 K. Its crystal structure was determined from the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction at room temperature. The compound is of a new structural type related to the LaF 3 -type of structure: space group P 6 3 cm , Z = 6, a = 7.8362(7) A, c = 9.7510(9) A, Pearson symbol hP24 . Some Ce–Ru distances in the unit cell are unusually short being equal to 2.4821(6) A. This structural feature brings about instability in the cerium valence state, directly evidenced in the XANES data and corroborated in the study of bulk physical behavior in Ce 2 RuAl.

Evolution of the nanocrystalline structure of the complex oxide Dy2HfO5 in the course of thermal annealing at temperatures to 1600°C has been studied by a combination of X-ray and synchrotron methods, including traditional and anomalous X-ray diffraction, PDF, EXAFS, and SAXS. The changes in crystallite size upon annealing of the as-synthesized amorphous precursor have been analyzed in detail. The systematic distortions of a fluorite-type perfect crystal structure (space group \(Fm\bar 3m\)) related to the nonequivalence of the local environment of the Dy and Hf cations but not resulting in formation of a pyrochlore-type cationordered structure in this system have been examined.

Complex oxides of the Ln 2 Hf 2 O 7 (Ln = lanthanide) series undergo a fluorite to pyrochlore phase transformation. We have studied the whole process of the crystal and local atomic structure realignment during the crystallization and the phase transition in the series of Ln 2 Hf 2 O 7 (Ln = La-Lu) samples synthesized by the coprecipitation method with the subsequent annealing of mixed hydroxides (precursors). The study employed a combination of x-ray diffraction (normal and anomalous), x-ray absorption spectroscopy, analysis of atomic pair distribution function and Raman spectroscopy. The starting and ending temperatures of the fluorite-pyrochlore phase transition for Ln 2 Hf 2 O 7 compounds have been determined along the lanthanide series La-Dy. The scheme summarizing structure types (amorphous, fluorite and pyrochlore) for the whole Ln 2 Hf 2 O 7 (Ln = La-Lu) series as a function of the Ln cation radius (or the r L n 3 + / r H f 4 + ratio) and the annealing temperature has been refined.

Intermetallic Ce2RuAl is prepared by arc melting of the elements followed by annealing at 823 K.

The process of double oxide Dy2O3-HfO2 nanocrystallites formation upon annealing to 1600°C was investigated with the combination off few X-ray and synchrotron methods. XRD and PDF show the mean crystal structure to be fluorite typical for the compounds of Ln2O3-MeO2 type. The ordering of structure and the growth of nanocrystallites upon annealing was estimated independently from XRD patterns, PDF functions and SAXS scattering curves. Neither transition to pyrochlore phase, nor signs of recently shown in related Gd2O3-HfO2 compounds pyrochlore-type superstructure is observed. However, EXAFS and the short range order of PDF clearly indicate the discrepancy between Dy and Hf local environment. Such a disorder of local crystal structure cannot be described by the fluorite model.
